This paper presents an arch structure called the circular box arch with sinusoidal corrugated webs (CBASCW). This study investigates the out-of-plane elastic buckling behavior and elastoplastic stability capacity of the arch through a combined approach of theoretical derivation and finite element simulation. The section stiffness of the arch, including flexural stiffness, shear stiffness, and torsional stiffness, is achieved through theoretical derivation. Additionally, the elastic buckling load in both pure compression and pure bending states is derived. A simplified model is also introduced, which can conveniently simulate the internal force and deformation of the arch. The elastoplastic instability mechanism and failure mode are studied under various loading conditions, including uniform radial load, end bending moment, vertical load uniformly distributed in full-span, and vertical load uniformly distributed in half-span. Furthermore, the stability curves of the arch under conditions of pure compression and pure bending are graphed by incorporating stability coefficient and regularized slenderness ratio. The expansion of lattice-structured tubular stent causes scaffold foreshortening and artery migration during implantation. Based on stent foreshortening attitudes, studies were carried out on hybrid lattices considered Zero Poisson’s Ratio (ZPR) behaviour of arrow, auxetic, and honeycomb unit cell combinations. This paper investigates the energy performance of four ZPR tubular structures inspired by hybrid stent shapes under axial and oblique impact. At the beginning of the workflow of the study, the buckling control of tubular structures was performed using the numerical model. The compression test was performed by 3D printing of the ZPR structure, which was verified to remain uniform under axial loading. The results show that hybrid (H) tubular structures that include ZPR unit cells with different configurations have higher energy absorption and higher crushing force efficiency (CFE) under oblique impact. When the oblique angle is increased, all ZPR tubular structures are unstable from 20 to 40 mm deformation distances due to moving plate compression. H1 has a better CFE value than the other two ZPR configurations when crushed under oblique load. Furthermore, ZPR tubular structures have great advantages for axial loads without buckling behaviour. Carbon foams (CFs), which can be manufactured from melamine foam (MF) via direct carbonization, are promising spacecraft thermal insulation material due to their excellent performance of sound absorption, low density, high porosity and heat resistance. Carbonization temperature, heating rate and carbonization time are three key elements during the melamine carbon foam process. As an improvement, this study simultaneously researches the impacts of pre-heat treatment on the microstructure, structure parameter, mechanical properties and heat-shielding performance of the melamine-derived carbon foam (MDCF), aiming to explore the best process of MDCF production. The results showed that the cross-linking degree and defects of MF samples were directly improved by pre-heat treatment. Additionally, all MDCF samples retained the three-dimensional mesh open-cell skeleton structure. The MDCF samples obtained by carbonization at 900 °C had the smallest average pore size structure, which performed the compressive stress of 16.8 kPa at 10 % strain and lowest thermal conductivity of 0.0252 W m−1 K−1. To further study the mechanical property and thermal conductivity performance of MDCF samples, the mechanics relationships of the buckling strength and shape variables, as well as thermal conductivity and pore size structure were researched. Highlights In this study, the post‐buckling damage behavior of cylindrical composite tubes was examined experimentally. The samples were reinforced with glass, carbon, and kevlar fibers to obtain glass‐reinforced fiber polymer (GRFP), carbon‐reinforced fiber polymer (CRFP), and Kevlar‐reinforced fiber polymer (KRFP) cylindrical tubes. The samples were produced using 4 stacking layers with filament winding technology. In producing all composite tubes, the outer diameter was kept constant at 17 mm, and two inner diameters of 12 and 13 mm, two wall thicknesses, 5 winding angles, and two lengths were used as parameters. The load was applied to the samples until completely damaged, and the maximum post‐buckling load values obtained were measured on the testing device. The effect of different reinforcement materials, winding angle, wall thickness, and length on the load‐carrying capacity was analyzed and it was understood that they had a significant effect. It was observed that the load‐carrying capacity of GFRP samples was the highest compared to the others, followed by CFRP and KFRP samples, respectively. In all samples, it was observed that a 0.5 mm wall thickness increase increased the load‐carrying capacity, while a 50 mm length increase decreased it. The energy absorption (EA) values of GFRP, CFRP, and KFRP samples were 46.99, 25.22, and 15.48 Joules, respectively. It was understood that the energy absorption of GFRP samples was 1.86 times better than CFRP and 3 times better than KFRP. The samples were produced using the fiber winding method, which is one of the most common production methods in the manufacture of tubes. Three different polymer reinforcement materials were used in the production of the samples. The effects of polymer reinforcement material, winding angle, length, and wall thickness on the maximum post‐buckling load were investigated. This article presents an analytical approach for calculating web stiffeners in thin-walled columns. A novel method is introduced, which treats each bending point in the cross-section web as a separate stiffener. The advantages of this calculation method are discussed, highlighting its increased versatility in designing cross-section geometry. The load-bearing strength of axially compressed thin-walled closed cross-section columns, calculated using this method, is compared to analytical calculations based on the Eurocode 3-1-3 methodology and to the finite element method analysis. Calculation results of columns with cross-sections including shallow web stiffeners were up to 9.22% less conservative when compared to the Eurocode 3-1-3 methodology. The results demonstrate great compliance of the proposed method for column crosssections with deep stiffeners. Finite element method (FEM) analysis was performed to verify the calculated load bearing strengths of the columns according to both calculation methodologies. FEM analysis confirmed the reliance of the calculated results and showed, that the load bearing strengths calculated using the newly presented methodology were ranging from 88.77% to 97.86% of load bearing strength calculated using finite element method. Graphene platelets (GPLs) exhibit outstanding mechanical and physical properties and therefore are employed as a reinforcement in advanced polymer composite structures. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the biaxial buckling of functionally graded graphene-reinforced sandwich plates with a soft orthotropic core. A new high-order three-layer theory is developed for the accurate modeling and analysis of the sandwich structure. The sandwich plate is divided into three layers including two face sheets and a core and a different third-order kinematic assumption is dedicated to each layer. The transverse flexibility of each layer as well as the displacements continuity at the interfaces are considered. Additionally, the continuity conditions and the conditions of zero transverse stresses in the whole structure are satisfied. The plate is subjected to a biaxial compressive loading and the governing equations are derived using the principle of minimum potential energy. Analytical solutions are presented for simply supported boundary conditions to obtain the critical buckling load. The influences of plate geometry and GPL properties on buckling load are investigated. The results obtained in specific cases are compared with the published results and the validity of the present results is confirmed. Designing underwater vehicles considering uncertainties in mechanical properties of composites is computationally expensive. In this paper, inexpensive-to-evaluate sparse polynomial chaos expansion (PCE) based on small data is employed to alleviate computational burden arising in uncertainty analysis. Experiments and finite element analysis for buckling are performed. Relative contribution of mechanical properties to critical buckling pressure is quantified. Distribution function histogram and risk of structral failure are obtained by performing Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) on inexpensive-to-evaluate sparse PCE. In this paper, the nonlinear post-buckling analysis of imperfect two-dimensional quasicrystal cylindrical shells is performed. The nonlinear governing equations are established by considering initial geometric imperfection, higher-order shear deformation theory and phonon-phason fields coupling effect. The load-shortening curves and buckling modes are obtained by the Galerkin's method. Numerical results are compared with the existing results and excellent agreements are obtained. Effects of geometrical parameters, initial imperfection and phonon-phason fields coupling effect on the critical load and imperfection sensitivity of two-dimensional quasicrystal cylindrical shells are discussed in detail. This paper aims to evaluate the seismic response of multitiered buckling-restrained braced frames (MT-BRBFs), assess the design provisions specified by the 2022 AISC Seismic Provisions for multitiered BRBFs, and propose improvements to these provisions. A set of 17 frames is first selected by varying bracing configuration, frame height, number of tiers, and tier height ratio. The frames are then designed in accordance with the 2010 and 2022 AISC Seismic Provisions. A numerical parametric study is performed under scaled ground motion accelerations. The results of the parametric study show that when the frames are designed to the 2010 provisions, the frame inelastic deformation tends to concentrate in the tier(s) undergoing tensile yielding due to their lower postyield stiffness, compared to BRBs yielding in compression, which creates unequal story shear, contributed by braces, in adjacent tiers with BRBs in tension and compression and engages column flexure to compensate for unbalanced brace story shears between tiers. Columns experience yielding and even buckling in several cases due to combined flexural and axial load demands. MT-BRBFs designed to the 2022 AISC Seismic Provisions exhibit a more uniform deformation response between tiers and relatively lower flexural demands in their columns. However, these provisions may overestimate column in-plane flexural demands (on the order of 3), resulting in potentially uneconomical design solutions. On the basis of the numerical simulations, modifications are proposed to compression BRBs' adjusted strength to better estimate column in-plane flexure and tier deformation while achieving an economical column design. Angle profiles belong to the most common steel profiles used in several types of civil engineering structures, such as in lattice towers. Although, in such towers, they are usually considered as axially loaded (truss) members, an additional bending moment develops due to the eccentricity between the point of load application and the gravity center of the profile. The development of microengineered hydrogels has opened up unlimited possibilities for designing complex structures at the microscale. In this study, we constructed an origami-inspired tubular structure with controlled mechanical buckling based on optically induced electrokinetics (OEK). By inducing a stress gradient in the thickness, a tubular structure can be formed from a poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) hydrogel film of various shapes that have been custom fabricated. To achieve an ideal three-dimensional (3D) structure, the amplitude of the tubular structure can be controlled by adjusting the aspect ratios or polymerization time. Furthermore, the tubular structure can be manipulated for the collection and transportation of microspheres. In summary, we provide an effective method for designing 3D structures at the micro-nano scale. The buckling curves, which enable the prediction of buckling resistance of steel structural elements, are physically connected with their type of cross-section, initial out-of-straightness, and the magnitude of residual stresses due to the different manufacturing technologies. It is known that hot-dip galvanisation changes and relives residual stresses, but so far the current design provisions do not take directly into account the impact of hot-dip galvanising on the reduction of residual stresses, and thus the reduction the generalised imperfection in the Ayrton-Perry model. The paper presents the difference between the relative buckling resistance of steel angles with residual stresses resulting from hot rolling and the same elements in which the magnitude of residual stresses was decreased by the hotdip galvanising process. Carried out tests and geometrically and materially non-linear analyses with imperfections (GMNIA) have shown that angles with residual stresses reduced by heat treatment caused by hot-dip galvanising have higher buckling resistance compared to those with residual stresses after hot rolling. This increase ranges from 2 to 7%. The analyses carried out confirmed that the predicted reduction factors c exhibit values closer to the buckling curve 'a', but these values do not reach the 'a0' curve recommended by the EN 50341-1 standard. A novel 3D centrosymmetric lattice that exhibits a large twist angle during compression is proposed by tailoring the twist buckling mode of a body-centered cubic lattice and a simple cubic truss to the first. The imperfections of offset and multimaterial systems are introduced to control the twist direction. Effects of geometrical parameters and material properties on twist behavior are studied. Results suggest that the buckling-driven lattice configuration can twist at an angle of 100° and an average angle per unit axial strain of 6.7°/%. Steel-coped beams are used in industrial structures to accommodate a cluster of water mains, fire hydrants, power cables and telecommunication wires. The coped regions restrict the ultimate capacity and cause unfavorable failure modes. The current study investigates the structural assessment of the coped section in offshore topsides while their use enhances operational safety for drilling and production. The structural evaluation is done through 2D digital image correlation (DIC) experiments to quantify the influence of various cope geometries. The DIC technique illustrated the strain and deformation measurements under different loading conditions for different coped geometry. The primary failure mode observed in local web buckling is characterized by noticeable lateral displacement and the development of buckling lines over the coped web. Studies showed the influence of the cope depth on the load-carrying capacity and buckling processes for different cope geometries. The results of the DIC analysis are strongly aligned with experimental data and finite element numerical results, suggesting this technique to the structural assessment of coped section. Branching structures comprise slender beam members that may cause the buckling of entire structures due to compression. An intelligent design algorithm for branching structures is proposed to facilitate the design of branching structures. The branching can be automatically generated by giving loads and truss position. This algorithm consists of three parts, namely, form-finding algorithm, buckling optimization algorithm, and topology optimization algorithm. With this intelligent design algorithm, the moment of the branching members can be removed; the geometrical length of members can be optimized according to the buckling constraints; and the effective members can be automatically selected from the ground structures and the sectional size can be automatically determined simultaneously. Additive manufacturing (AM) offers new possibilities to fabricate and design lightweight lattice materials. Due to the superior mechanical properties of these lattice structures, they have the potential to replace honeycombs as cores in sandwich panels. In addition to the advantage of the integral fabrication thanks to AM, additively manufactured lattice core sandwich panels may be also used as heat exchangers, enabling a multifunctional use of the core. To ensure a reliable and safe structure, the mechanical response of lattice core sandwich panels under given load conditions must be predictable. In conventional sandwich panels subjected to compressive loads, the sandwich's global buckling and the face sheets' local buckling are the dominant failure modes. In constrast, core strut buckling may be the critical failure mode in lattice core sandwich panels. Therefore, an analytical 2D model to predict the local buckling of lattice core struts is considered in this study. Furthermore, the critical load for global buckling is obtained based on the first-order shear deformation theory. Thus, the transition from local buckling to global buckling depending on the length-to-thickness ratio is captured by the presented model. The collapsible tubular mast (CTM) can be compactly folded for transport and deployed in orbit to serve as a key structural element. Once deployed, the CTM is vulnerable to buckling under axial load and bending moments, compromising its load-bearing capacity. The intricate relationship between the CTM's cross-section and its buckling behavior poses a significant challenge for designers. This is due to the ultra-thin nature of the CTM, which gives rise to highly localized buckling modes rather than global ones. To overcome this challenge, we developed surrogate models using a neural network (NN) trained with data from finite element analysis (FEA). These NN-based surrogate models provide high computational accuracy in predicting nonlinear buckling loads under axial force and bending moments around the two principal axes of the CTM's cross-section, achieving R 2 values of 0.9906 , 0.9987 , and 0.9628 , respectively. These models also significantly improve computational efficiency, reducing prediction time to a fraction of a second compared to several minutes with FEA. Furthermore, the NN-based surrogate models enable the usage of the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) for multi-objective optimization (MOO) of the CTMs. These models can be integrated in the NSGA-II algorithm to evaluate the objective function of existing and new individuals until a set of 1000 non-dominated solutions, i.e., cross-sectional configurations optimizing buckling performance, is identified. The proposed approach enables the design of ultra-thin CTMs with optimized stability and structural integrity by promoting design decisions based on the quantitative information provided by the NN-based surrogate models. Large displacements are expected to occur in existing code-compliant steel moment-resisting frames during a severe earthquake, affecting the functionality of buildings. This study investigated the use of buckling-restrained braces for controlling the displacement response and ensuring an occupiable performance level of the structures. A design procedure for the braces based on the energy balance concept is proposed, where the hysteretic energy demand of the frame before and after attaching the braces is equated. Time-history analysis results show structures designed using the proposed procedure satisfied the targeted performance level, and no significant change in peak floor acceleration response was observed. This study presents a numerical investigation into the adhesion strength of micro fibrillar structures, incorporating statistical analysis and the effects of excessive pre–load leading to fibril buckling. Fibrils are modeled as soft cylinders using the Euler–Bernoulli beam theory, with buckling conditions described across three distinct states, each affecting the adhesive properties of the fibrils. Iterative simulations analyze how adhesion strength varies with pre–load, roughness, number of fibrils, and the work of adhesion. Roughness is modeled both in fibril heights and in the texture of a rigid counter surface, following a normal distribution with a single variance parameter. Results indicate that roughness and pre–load significantly influence adhesion strength, with excessive pre–load causing substantial buckling and a dramatic reduction in adhesion. This study also finds that adhesion strength decreases exponentially with increasing roughness, in line with theoretical expectations. The findings highlight the importance of buckling and roughness parameters in determining adhesion strength. This study offers valuable insights into the complex adhesive interactions of fibrillar structures, offering a scalable solution for rapid assessment of adhesion in various rough surface and loading scenarios. During the cantilever casting process of reinforced concrete arch bridges with cantilever cast‐in‐situ method, it is difficult to select representative training samples for reliability analysis due to its complex structural system. Many random variables and large computational sample size, this paper proposes to solve the reliability indexes based on the combination of the improved sparrow search algorithm (LGSSA) and the support vector regression (SVR) method. Firstly, random variables are selected according to the actual situation of the bridge structure. Then representative training samples are designed to be substituted into the finite element model through the homogeneous method. The resultant data samples are used to fit the functional function by the support vector regression. Then combined with the penalized function method to transform the nonlinear optimization into the problem of solving the extreme value of the function. Based on the improved SSA to solve the extreme value of the final function. Finally the reliability index of the structure is obtained. With the background of reinforced concrete arch bridge of 200 m, the method is used to analyze the reliability of its buckling cable stress, arch stress, buckling tower deviation and structural system reliability during the cantilever casting process. The results show that the overall structural reliability of the arch ring during cantilever casting is 3.502–3.608. The indexes of buckling cable stress reliability are 3.806–6.784. The impact test of tubular components is usually carried out by way of drop hammer impact. In fact, in many ships’ equipment, the form of load is often carried out by way of drop impact test. In this paper, the drop impact test is used to study the buckling of tubular structure under impact load, so as to make it closer to the impact form of components in actual ship structure. Firstly, the stress, strain, acceleration at each moment and the buckling deformation mode of the tubular member after the impact are obtained through the drop impact experiment, and then the impact process is analyzed. Secondly, the finite element method is used for numerical simulation of the impact process, and the accuracy of the finite element analysis results is verified by comparing with it. Thirdly, the finite element method proved to be effective and was used to simulate single and multiple drop impacts under more working conditions, and a large amount of data was obtained. Finally, according to the existing impact criteria based on the results of drop weight impact, it is applied to the drop impact process, and the accuracy of each impact criterion is analyzed and compared. This method makes up for the deficiency of the traditional experimental method of using falling weight to simulate impact, and provides a reference for the critical buckling condition of similar thin-walled cylindrical shells under impact. AbstractTubular structural composites are widely used in applications where high stiffness and low weight are required. This work proposes the study and evaluation of the influence of damage on the structural responses of thin-walled structures made of composite materials, as well as the development of a buckling prediction model using artificial intelligence. The methodology is approached on a few main fronts, namely: i) numerical modeling of the direct problem of the structure in finite elements, ii) modeling and parameterization of delamination in the elliptical shell model; iii) obtaining a database through finite element updating and iv) formulation and construction of the regression and prediction model using artificial neural networks. The numerical results showed that, as expected, the presence of delamination has a significant impact on the occurrence of buckling. The study also showed that it is possible to predict buckling values, with extremely satisfactory results - an error of around 1%, provided that more complex regression methods are used, such as regression by artificial neural networks, since the relationship between damage and buckling values is not trivial. Tissue buckling is an increasingly appreciated mode of morphogenesis in the embryo, but it is often unclear how geometric and material parameters are molecularly determined in native developmental contexts to generate diverse functional patterns. Here, we study the link between differential mechanical properties and the morphogenesis of distinct anteroposterior compartments in the intestinal tract--the esophagus, small intestine, and large intestine. These regions originate from a simple, common tube but adopt unique forms. Using measured data from the developing chick gut coupled with a minimal theory and simulations of differential growth, we investigate divergent lumen morphologies along the entire early gut and demonstrate that spatiotemporal geometries, moduli, and growth rates control the segment-specific patterns of mucosal buckling. Primary buckling into wrinkles, folds, and creases along the gut, as well as secondary buckling phenomena, including period-doubling in the foregut and multiscale creasing-wrinkling in the hindgut, are captured and well explained by mechanical models. This study advances our existing knowledge of how identity leads to form in these regions, laying the foundation for future work uncovering the relationship between molecules and mechanics in gut morphological regionalization. The objective of this paper is to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the buckling and post-buckling behavior of hyperelastic beams through both computational and experimental means. Natural rubber is used in the construction of a beam with a square cross-section. To determine the mechanical properties of natural rubber, a uniaxial tensile test is performed in accordance with ASTM D412. In finite element modeling (FEM), the nonlinear behavior of rubber is modeled using hyperelastic theory and the Yeoh strain energy function. The Static-Riks method is also implemented using Abaqus for the analysis of nonlinear buckling. To validate the present investigation results with FEM, an experimental test of digital image correlation (DIC) is conducted. The critical buckling force obtained via numerical methods exhibits an error of nearly 5% when compared to the corresponding results obtained from experimental testing. In order to ascertain the impact of various design parameters on the buckling behavior of the system, a comprehensive parametric analysis has been conducted. The parameters studied include the cross-sectional thickness, length of the structure, eccentric loads, as well as the mechanical properties of the materials used in the system. Consistent with the FEM outcomes, the critical buckling force exhibited by the hyperelastic beam demonstrates a positive correlation with increasing levels of hardness, cross-sectional thickness, and eccentric loads. The buckling behavior of the system is adversely affected by increasing its length. Buckling of axially loaded beams is discussed in the context of Λ-fractional analysis and mechanics. An axially compressed cantilever beam is considered in the Λ-fractional space, and the critical load is defined. The variational buckling problem of the simply supported beam is considered in the Λ-fractional space. It is pointed out that the Euler–Lagrange equation corresponding to the minimization of the total energy function with the Weierstrass–Erdmann conditions is only acceptable. The Λ-fractional buckling elastic curve of a simply supported beam is presented. That elastic curve is transferred into the initial space. Highlights This paper presents an analytical approach for buckling and postbuckling analysis for functionally graded graphene‐reinforced composite (FG‐GRC) toroidal shell segments with the trapezoidal or round corrugated core under the axial tension and compression. The considered shells are placed in a thermal environment and surrounded by an elastic foundation. Based on the von Kármán‐Donnell shell theory with geometrical nonlinearities, Stein and McElman approximation, and a homogenization technique for corrugated shells, the basic equations of shells are established. The previous homogenization technique is improved by adding the thermal forces in the internal force expressions. The shell‐foundation interaction is expressed using the model of the Pasternak assumption. The Ritz energy method is used to obtain the pre‐buckling and postbuckling behaviors of the shells, from which the critical buckling tensions and compressions can be investigated. Composite structures can achieve greater performance through variable stiffness design. In consideration of inevitable manufacturing defects introduced by the Automatic Fiber Placement machine, modified models are established to calculate equivalent properties for materials with gaps or overlaps. A modeling method for variable stiffness structures with defects is proposed based on the modified models. This approach significantly reduces the dependence on mesh size for analysis accuracy, thereby improving modeling and calculation efficiency. Upon validation of the proposed modeling method, a Hierarchical Kriging surrogate modeling is employed to optimize the buckling performance of a variable stiffness wing box with defects. The impact of different manufacturing strategies on optimization results is also investigated. The findings demonstrate that the variable stiffness design improves the wing box buckling performance under a combined torsion-bending condition. Shear-keyed inter-modular connections (IMCs) are integral components of high-rise modular steel structures (MSSs), providing robust interconnectivity to support grouped tubular columns across modules, thereby introducing column discontinuities and distinctive structural behavior. This study conducted a comprehensive numerical assessment and theoretical analysis of the axial compression behavior of grouped tubular columns based on a validated finite element model (FEM), which captured the member-to-structural level behavior of steel hollow section (SHS) columns and accommodated geometric imperfections. An FEM was initially developed and validated using 28 axial compression tests documented in the literature, comprising 15 tests on cold-formed and 13 on hot-rolled steel hollow section (SHS) columns. The primary parameters explored in tests included material properties (stainless/carbon), processing methods (cold-formed/hot-rolled), cross-section sizes (D/B), cross-sectional or member slenderness ratios (D/tc, B/tc, or Lc/r), and the number of columns (1, 7, and 11). A comprehensive parametric numerical study involving 103 grouped tubular column FEMs then investigated the influence of initial imperfection, shear-key height (Lt), thickness (tt), steel tube length (D), width (B), thickness (tc), and height (Lc) alongside the effects of space between tube and key, and the gap between tubes. The results indicated that the load-shortening behavior of the grouped columns consists of linear elastic, inelastic, and recession stages. The failure modes observed primarily displayed an S-shaped pair of inward and outward local buckling on the outer sides and double S-shaped local buckling on the interior sides. The buckling arose near the shear key or at 1/4 or 1/2 of the column height. None of the considered models experienced global buckling. Increasing tt, Lt, tc, D, or B enhances strength and stiffness, while Lc or Lc/r linearly affects stiffness and ductility. The columns' nominal axial strength was reduced because of the shear keys, which decreased compression yielding and caused localized elastic buckling. Subsequently, the theoretical analysis revealed that the design codes do not capture this behavior, and thus, their capacity estimate yields inaccurate findings. This discrepancy renders existing code prediction equations, including those from Indian (IS800), New Zealand (NZS400), European (EC3:1-1), Canadian (CSA S16), American (AISC360-16), and Chinese (GB50017) standards, as well as the model proposed by Li et al., non-conservative. To assure conservative results, the paper recommended modification of existing standards and proposed prediction equations based on a fourth-order differential equation that describes the actual behavior of modular steel columns grouped with shear keys. The proposed design approach accurately predicted the axial compression capacity of modular steel-grouped columns, proving conservative yet effective. This provides valuable data that could transform design and construction techniques for MSSs, extending to various column and IMC forms through adaptable design parameters. A parametric investigation of several unbraced steel frames with regular and irregular geometry subjected to elevated temperatures is carried out in this study to determine the most accurate procedure and buckling lengths to be considered during the structural design under a fire situation. In such conditions, the stiffness and strength of steel decrease considerably due to high temperatures, and uncertainty remains in the application of the fire design rules of Eurocode 3 Part 1-2 (EN 1993-1-2) for unbraced frames as no information is given regarding the treatment of the deformed geometry (the so-called second-order effects). More precisely, it is unclear in the norm whether the verification based on the buckling length concept could be used or if a second-order analysis to calculate the internal forces is sufficient to ensure the stability of the frame in case of fire. Based on the linear buckling analysis of the steel frames accounting for the temperature development during a fire, recommendations for the appropriate buckling lengths to be used are given. Finally, it is demonstrated that using the recommended buckling lengths together with the design rules of EN 1993-1-2 leads to results in favor of safety when compared to the results obtained with the finite element method. On the other hand, it is concluded that using second-order internal forces and the real length of the columns as the buckling length, as suggested for room temperature design, yielded results outside safety when compared with the finite element method, and this analysis and verification procedure should not be used for the case of fire. Stiffened structures have great potential for improvingmechanical performance, and the study of their stability is of great interest. In this paper, the optimization of the critical buckling load factor for curved grid stiffeners is solved by using the level set based density method, where the shape and cross section (including thickness and width) of the stiffeners can be optimized simultaneously. The grid stiffeners are a combination ofmany single stiffenerswhich are projected by the corresponding level set functions. The thickness and width of each stiffener are designed to be independent variables in the projection applied to each level set function. Besides, the path of each single stiffener is described by the zero iso-contour of the level set function. All the single stiffeners are combined together by using the p-norm method to obtain the stiffener grid. The nonlinear buckling and postbuckling of functionally graded carbon nanotube reinforcement composite (FG-CNTRC) plates resting on the nonlinear effect of elastic foundation under combined load including external pressure and axial compression loads with uniformly distributed temperature rises are fully investigated in this paper. The FG-CNTRC plates are reinforced by FG-CNTRC stiffeners and the plate-foundation interaction is modeled using a nonlinear model. The higher-order shear deformation plate theory with the geometrical nonlinearities of von Kármán is applied to establish the basic formulations. Additionally, by using the anisotropic higher-order shear deformation beam theory, a new smeared stiffener technique is successfully developed for FG-CNTRC stiffeners. AbstractThe present study involves the numerical and experimental buckling response of MWCNT reinforced composite sandwich semi-ellipsoidal dome subjected to uniform hydrostatic external pressure. The skin of the composite sandwich dome is made up of MWCNT-GFRP composite layers and the PLA honeycomb core, which is reinforced with and without strips. Various honeycomb core configurations, such as SRHC-1 to SRHC-3, are formulated in such a way that the strips are reinforced between the regular honeycomb core in longitudinal and transverse directions to enhance the stiffness characteristics of the structure. The nonlinear buckling analysis of the MWCNT reinforced composite sandwich dome is formulated and solved through the commercially available software ANSYS®. The geometry and material non-linearity of the MWCNT reinforced sandwich dome structures are incorporated in the numerical model while solving the non-linear differential equations and identifying the critical pressure of the sandwich structures using arc length method. The testings were performed to obtain the various mechanical properties, the non-linear behavior of yield stress with a plastic strain of the MWCNT-reinforced GFRP skin and the transverse shear modulus of the various honeycomb core patterns. The efficiency of the present numerical modeling and buckling analysis is confirmed by comparing the critical pressure obtained through the experimental buckling analysis performed on the MWCNT-reinforced prototype sandwich dome and the results available in the literature. This paper presents a novel analytical solution for the buckling load in 3D of columns that fills a gap in the existing literature by accounting for shear deformation and spatial effects. The latter means that a column can be supported and buckle in any direction. We build on the foundational work of Simo and use a 3D beam model to derive a set of equations that form the basis for our analytical solution. The paper outlines the axioms of the Simo model, presents the corresponding equations, and describes the linearization procedure in details. By linearizing the equations we obtain a set of algebraic equations with boundary conditions, which we manipulate into an analytical solution for the buckling load. An illustrative example using a column with an elliptical cross-section shows how different boundary conditions and the spatial orientation of the column influence the buckling load. AbstractThis study develops a novel analytical method to evaluate if box sections, with unequal wall thicknesses under bending, will undergo local buckling prior to reaching their yield strength since the analytical determination of critical local buckling stresses for such sections remains unexplored due to the lack of local buckling coefficients, warranting further investigation in scholarly discourse. Despite not directly computing the local buckling stresses, the developed method specifies a possible critical local buckling stress range by incorporating reference, critical, and equivalent section models, all formulated and developed with uniform wall thicknesses. The formulated method proficiently discerns the occurrence of local buckling by conducting a comparative assessment of the yield strength of the box section material against both the lower (min) and upper (max) bound stresses of the critical local buckling stress range. If local buckling persists unclear after the initial benchmark, the method reaches the final conclusion by comparing the constant wall thickness of the critical section with the web thickness of the box section. The developed method validated against finite element results obtained from linear elastic eigenvalue buckling analyses can be applied to the problem of determining whether such box sections subjected to bending will experience local buckling. Buckling may cause drill string damage or even drilling failure. For the 3 000-m-long horizontal section drill string, a simplified analysis model of drill string in horizontal well is established, and the dynamic response results of axial displacement, angular displacement and contact force are obtained. When buckling, the closer the position of drill string is to the bottom, the later the buckling time, the smaller the buckling deformation degree, the slower the growth rate of axial displacement, and the smaller the attenuation degree of angular displacement and contact force amplitude. After buckling, drill string undergoes tensile deformation and eventually remains stable in the tensile state. After stabilization, from the top of drill string to the bottom of drill string, axial displacement increment increases first, then remains unchanged and then decreases, and the relative torsion angle between different positions gradually decreases. The drill string is always in horizontal contact with the wellbore, resulting in the same contact force values at different locations. The change of well inclination angle does not affect the change law of displacement and contact force. The absolute value of angular displacement is negatively correlated with the change of well inclination angle, and the value of axial displacement increment and contact force is positively correlated with the change of well deviation angle, but the value of contact force is quite close. In the present research, torsional buckling response of thick truncated conical shell panels supporting on Winkler-type elastic medium has been surveyed. The shell is constructed from a porous metal material reinforced by graphene platelets (GPLs) in which the porosity and volume weight fraction of nanofillers are graded along the thickness of shell. Three functions for porosity distribution and five patterns of GPLs are examined. To estimate the Young modulus of the shell, Tsai-Halpin micromechanical model, and for its mass density, extended rule of mixture is employed. Linear theory of 3D elasticity in conjunction with the virtual work principle and numerical graded finite element method (FEM) are applied to derive the state of equilibrium in pre-buckling mode. Torsional buckling forces are derived by applying nonlinear Green strains and by deriving geometric stiffness matrix of the system. The effect of various parameters such as coefficient of porosity, various distributions of porosity and different nanofiller patterns, weight fraction of graphene nanofillers, semi vertex angle of cone, span angle, stiffness of elastic medium and various boundary conditions on torsional buckling loads of functionally graded (FG) porous truncated conical panel reinforced by GPLs have been presented. The main purpose of this research is obtaining the best distribution of porosity and GPLs pattern and investigating the influence of adding nano particles on the torsional buckling forces of the shell. Results denote that employing GPL-X pattern in conjunction with porosity distribution 1 provides the maximum value of buckling loads. Two main goals are pursued in the present work. First, the global buckling of axially loaded sandwich beams with composite face sheets and aluminum honeycomb cores under humid environments is investigated. An analytical solution with high accuracy is developed based on piecewise low-order shear deformation theory (PLSDT) to estimate the critical buckling loads. A parametric study is carried out to examine the influence of geometric parameters on the buckling loads of simply supported and clamped sandwich beams under different wet conditions. The obtained results indicate that humidity plays a significant role in the buckling behavior of honeycomb sandwich beams. As the second purpose of the present work, the weight minimization of sandwich beams is studied. The optimization variables include the face sheet thickness, core thickness, honeycomb cell size and honeycomb cell wall thickness. Moreover, different failure modes, including global buckling, face sheet dimpling, face sheet wrinkling, core shear instability, and face sheet failure are considered as design constraints. Imperialist competitive algorithm (ICA), a powerful socio-politically motivated global search strategy, is applied to handle the constrained optimization problem. The optimization results show that the presence of humidity in the environment significantly changes the optimal design of sandwich beams and makes them heavier. Furthermore, it is observed that by increasing the length of the structure, the optimal design is more affected by humidity. A novel four-node quadrilateral element with eleven degrees of freedom per node is approximated using the C1-order non-conforming Hermite and Lagrange functions and the novel refined Quasi-3D plate hypothesis for buckling and free vibration analysis of non-uniform thickness bi-directional functionally graded sandwich porous (BFGSP) plates resting on variable elastic foundations (VEF) in a hygro-thermal environment. Material and mechanical properties that change in both the length and thickness directions with three different laws of porosity, which are made up of a fully ceramic core layer and two bi-directional functionally graded (2D-FG) material ones, may be used a lot in the aerospace engineering and military industries. In order to analyze the buckling and free oscillation behaviors shown by the plate with arbitrary boundary conditions, a series of mathematical methods created in Matlab's software are used. The computation program's correctness is verified by comparing numerical findings to dependable assertions. In addition, a comprehensive analysis of the impact of factors on the buckling and free oscillation responses is conducted. The findings reveal that the novel porosity patterns, the hygro-thermal environment, the elastic medium characteristics, and the boundary conditions have a substantial impact on the mechanical behaviors of the non-uniform thickness 2D-FG sandwich porous plates. The post-buckling behavior of a beam that is subjected to lateral constraints is of relevance to a range of medical and engineering applications, such as endoscopic examination of internal organs, the insertion of a guidewire into an artery in-stent procedures, root growth, deep-drilling, and more. In this paper, we address a disconnect between the existing literature and the reality of these systems, in which the lateral constraints are flexible and experience nonlinear deformations. As a step towards bridging this gap, we consider a beam undergoing planar deformations that is laterally constrained by a nonlinear springy wall, i.e., a wall that is laterally pushed by the beam against a nonlinear spring. Based on a simplified mathematical model, we obtain closed-form analytical solutions, which provide valuable insights and intuition. For example, we show that important features of the behavior, such as the transition from point contact to line contact and switching to the next mode, are dictated solely by a non-dimensional force, regardless of all other parameters of the system, and that the full description of the behavior is possible by means of two non-dimensional quantities that describe the relative stiffness of the nonlinear spring compared to that of the beam. The results also highlight the fundamental differences between the behavior with a stiffening spring or with a softening spring, such as the number of attainable modes and the monotonicity of the overall force-displacement relation. This study investigates the buckling and free vibration behavior of functionally graded saturated porous (FGSP) using a refined quasi-3D theory that ensures zero transverse shear stress at the top and bottom surfaces of the plate. The material properties depend on the porosity coefficient according to three patterns. Hamilton's principle and Biot's poroelasticity theory are employed to derive the equations of motion, which are then solved using Navier's technique. After examining the accuracy of the suggested approach, the effect of fluid compressibility on natural frequency and critical buckling load is investigated in the undrained condition. Also, the effect of porosity, geometrical parameters, and elastic foundation on the vibration and buckling response of FGSP plates are examined. The integration of inserts into sandwich panel constructions is a complex multi-step process with significant human intervention that also limits the geometrical freedom of the insert design. In a standard sandwich construction, the panel core is made up of multiple materials across its main components: insert, potting and core. This multi-material assembly is not only difficult to manufacture, but it also promotes stress jumps at the insert-core interface, leading to a sub-optimal load distribution from the bolt to the panel core. Additive manufacturing (AM) can lead to a single-part core and insert assembly with more optimised insert geometries that can better transmit the loads applied to the panel. Previous work by the authors has explored the manufacturing limits and the failure modes of AM inserts integrated in cores printed out of sintered AlSi10Mg. The conclusions were that the core walls and insert elements should have a minimum design thickness of 0.5 mm to survive the tapping process without facesheets attached and it was found that the main failure mode of the geometries tested in pull-out was buckling of the insert walls. Based on these results, the paper proposes a novel insert design philosophy that can delay the buckling of 3D printed inserts and move the failure point of the insert away from the bolt. A set of inserts that follow this design direction is manufactured and tested under normal pull-out loads and the optimised designs outperform standard printed insert geometries by a factor of three. The buckling behavior of tubular string is critical for safe oil and gas resource development. In practical engineering, the buckling of tubular string can appear in different development phases, such as casing putting into wellbore, BHA drilling rock, pipeline buckling, etc. Therefore, in this paper, the buckling behavior and buckling evolution of the tubular string are explored considering friction in horizontal wells. By applying the principles of static equilibrium and beam-string theory, an established theoretical model is utilized to examine the buckling behavior of tubular string. The critical load for sinusoidal buckling is determined by using both the series and trial function methods, and a comparison is made between the results obtained from these two techniques. In addition, perturbation analysis is used to obtain the angular displacement's configuration function in the helical buckling post-buckling state. To validate the model's effectiveness, a comprehensive analysis of the numerical results is performed, considering both sinusoidal and helical buckling scenarios. The research findings demonstrate that both the series method and the trial function method can effectively analyze sinusoidal buckling with high accuracy. The presence of friction significantly impedes the buckling behavior of the tubular string. The durability of profiled metal-faced insulating sandwich panels (MFISPs) in terms of exposure to high temperatures and thermal cycles is critical for their use in civil engineering applications. In this paper, a total of 20 full-scale panels made with two different thicknesses were tested under instantaneous lateral pressure loading at ambient conditions as well as under various combinations of high temperatures, thermal cycles, and lateral pressure. The pressure was applied through a vacuum chamber whereas thermal blankets were used for sustained and cyclic thermal exposure of the panels. Each thermal cycle entailed 24 h of time duration with a temperature range of 20–80°C. The results show a consistent reduction in the initial stiffness, local buckling pressure, and strength of the panels when they were loaded at high temperatures. These reductions were more substantial (up to 24%) under the combined effects of high temperature (80°C), thermal cycles, and pressure loading. The study also shows that the thickness of the foam core can play an important role in controlling the local buckling capacity and strength of the MFISPs. A nonlinear finite-element analysis was also conducted with a relatively good correlation with the test results. The numerical results provide further insights into the structural response and explain certain aspects that could not be obtained from the tests. Given that MFISPs are typically used for roof panels, where the combination of high temperatures and wind load is inevitable at certain regions, the results presented in this work are recommended for consideration in their design. The effects of initial small-scale material nonlinearity on the pre-yield and pre-buckling response of externally pressurized metallic (plane strain) perfect rings (very long cylindrical shells) is investigated. The cylindrically curved 16-node element, based on an assumed quadratic displacement field (in surface-parallel coordinates) and the assumption of linear distribution of displacements through thickness (LDT), is employed to obtain the discretized system equations. The effect of initial small-scale material nonlinearity (assumed hypo-elastic) on the deformation and stress in the pre-yield and pre-buckling regime of a very long relatively thin metallic cylindrical shell (plane strain ring) is numerically investigated. In complex cardiovascular surgical reconstructions, conduit materials that avoid possible large-scale structural deformations should be considered. A fundamental mode of mechanical complication is torsional buckling which occurs at the anastomosis site due to the mechanical instability, leading surgical conduit/patch surface deformation. The objective of this study is to investigate the torsional buckling behavior of commonly used materials and to develop a practical method for estimating the critical buckling rotation angle under physiological intramural vessel pressures. For this task, mechanical tests of four clinically approved materials, expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE), Dacron, porcine and bovine pericardia, commonly used in pediatric cardiovascular surgeries, are conducted (n = 6). Torsional buckling initiation tests with n = 4 for the baseline case (L = 7.5 cm) and n = 3 for the validation of ePTFE (L = 15 cm) and Dacron (L = 15 cm and L = 25 cm) for each are also conducted at low venous pressures. A practical predictive formulation for the buckling potential is proposed using experimental observations and available theory. The relationship between the critical buckling rotation angle and the lumen pressure is determined by balancing the circumferential component of the compressive principal stress with the shear stress generated by the modified critical buckling torque, where the modified critical buckling torque depends linearly on the lumen pressure. While the proposed technique successfully predicted the critical rotation angle values lying within two standard deviations of the mean in the baseline case for all four materials at all lumen pressures, it could reliably predict the critical buckling rotation angles for ePTFE and Dacron samples of length 15 cm with maximum relative errors of 31% and 38%, respectively, in the validation phase. However, the validation of the performance of the technique demonstrated lower accuracy for Dacron samples of length 25 cm at higher pressure levels of 12 mmHg and 15 mmHg. Applicable to all surgical materials, this formulation enables surgeons to assess the torsional buckling potential of vascular conduits noninvasively. Bovine pericardium has been found to exhibit the highest stability, while Dacron (the lowest) and porcine pericardium have been identified as the least stable with the (unitless) torsional buckling resistance constants, 43,800, 12,300 and 14,000, respectively. There was no significant difference between ePTFE and Dacron, and between porcine and bovine pericardia. However, both porcine and bovine pericardia were found to be statistically different from ePTFE and Dacron individually (p < 0.0001). ePTFE exhibited highly nonlinear behavior across the entire strain range [0, 0.1] (or 10% elongation). This paper presents a numerical study to model the thermal-induced pipeline buckling–soil interaction as a demonstration of the feasibility of modeling global buckling using an effective stress remeshing and interpolation technique with a small strain (RITSS) approach in 3D. The numerical results are compared with a previously published large-scale laboratory test, centrifuge, and numerical models. The influence of embedment depth, pipe weight, and pipe–soil interface roughness on the global pipe–soil response is investigated. The current study unveiled some of the key behaviors of partially embedded and buried pipes during thermal expansion. First, the expansion-induced displacements comprise vertical and lateral displacements. Heavy pipes dive deeper into the soil, whereas lightweight pipes rise above their initial position as they move laterally for partially embedded and buried pipes. Furthermore, expansion-induced displacements become insignificant as the burial depth increases. The soil in front of the buried pipe flows up and above to its rear end as the expansion-induced displacements increase. Moreover, lateral buckling occurs in buried pipes even though the lateral out-of-straightness of the pipe is within the recommended limit set by the Det Norske Veritas (DNV) guideline.
