This study aims to examine the development of diversity and inclusion (D&I) literature and identify its prominent themes and blind spots. The research was conducted using bibliometric analysis on the Web of Science database and included 2510 publications. Results showed that the development of D&I literature had increased exponentially since the 1960s, mainly due to different political and societal events. The geographic development showed that research was primarily conducted in developed countries where quotas and other legislation are implemented. The thematic development revealed a stable but narrow focus on diversity management, board diversity, and team diversity, with little attention to inclusion. The keyword analysis strongly emphasized surface-level diversity, such as gender, race, and cultural diversity, while deep-level diversity received less attention. This study concludes that previous D&I literature has mainly focused on the financial effects of D&I and neglected other elements, such as the effects on social performance, its ethical implications, and the relationship between diversity and inclusion. The study recommends future research to expand the interpretation of diversity, examine the relationship between diversity and inclusion, and explore the effects of diversity on non-financial outcomes such as social performance and ethics. This study provides a valuable contribution to the field of business ethics by highlighting the blind spots in D&I literature and encouraging future research to consider the ethical implications of diversity in the workplace. "Exceptions" refers to data obtained from a nontraditional context and/or data that emerge during data analysis that substantially deviate from other data present within a study. Both qualitative and quantitative research acknowledge exceptions; however, approaches for handling and discussing exceptions vary across these two perspectives and are rarely integrated. We provide a two-decade review of exception usages across 930 empirical articles in six leading management journals. Through our review, we identify two types of exceptions: planned and emergent. "Planned exceptions" describes unique data or phenomenon used to motivate a study design. "Emergent exceptions" describes nonconforming data that arise during data analysis. We review on-diagonal and off-diagonal patterns in exception uses across qualitative and quantitative research, pointing to varied ways that exceptions are used to further management theory. Based on insights gleaned from our review, we provide suggestions for researchers in handling exceptions across different phases of the research process: study design, data analysis, and findings presentation. In this article the authors discuss the integration of theories in " Academy of Management Journal" articles. They note the importance that theories play in management research, adding that as management scholars themselves, they engage in research to better understand the different aspects of management. They argue that a single theory is not sufficient for answering management research questions and discuss four approaches for integrating theory including the incorporation of two theoretical perspectives to address a single phenomena, the incorporation of one phenomenon with two seemingly disparate theoretical perspectives, and the application of one theory to the domain of another theory.

Pearce and Huang (2012, this issue) argue that management research has had woefully little impact. In support of this contention, they attempt to demonstrate that there has been a decline in 'actionable' management research in selected management journals, suggest that relatively few mentions of those journals in a publication such as The Economist are evidence of lack of impact, and offer a list of questions which they believe management research could more profitably address. I fully agree with Pearce and Huang's call to explore ways to enhance the impact of management research; however, I have serious questions about the authors' assumptions, logical development, methodology, representation of data, and recommendations. As such, whether there has actually been a decline in the impact and 'actionability' of management research, I can't agree that Pearce and Huang's article provides meaningful input to this issue. The relationship between management research and managerial practice is an issue that for many years has commanded attention from diverse parties such as business writers, students, and faculty members themselves. The results of the analyses of this relationship are controversial in that at least some members of some groups continue to hold different views. In their work, Pearce and Huang support the perspective that management research should inform managerial practice. However, they argue that the amount of 'actionable research' (research that teachers can effectively use in their classrooms) that is being published in two prestigious journals ( Academy of Management Journal and Administrative Science Quarterly ) is declining. Pearce and Huang speculate as to why this is the case and propose solutions to deal with the issue. Herein, I speak to the context and framing of the Pearce and Huang study, offering an alternative definition of actionable research in the process of doing so. Using Pearce and Huang's results and the perspectives included here, I close with a set of recommendations about future work that might be completed as a foundation for continuing the dialogue about the relationship between management research and managerial practice. The article discusses how cocitation analysis can be used to examine knowledge combination in scholarly journals. The authors suggest that knowledge creation includes incorporating elements of previous studies into the writing of scholarly articles. They comment that cocitation, in which two articles are cited by a third article, may indicate that knowledge from the cited articles has been combined. They analyze cocitation in management journals such as "The Academy of Management Journal" (AMI) and "The Journal of Management" (JM) and describe cocitation networks.

Predatory journals have emerged as an unintended consequence of the Open Access paradigm. Predatory journals only supposedly or very superficially conduct peer review and accept manuscripts within days to skim off publication fees. In this provocation piece, we first explain how predatory journals exploit deficiencies of the traditional peer review process in times of Open Access publishing. We then explain two ways in which predatory journals may harm the management discipline: as an infrastructure for the dissemination of pseudo-science and as a vehicle to portray management research as pseudo-scientific. Analyzing data from a journal blacklist, we show that without the ability to validate their claims to conduct peer review, most of the 639 predatory management journals are quite difficult to demarcate from serious journals. To address this problem, we propose open peer review as a new governance mechanism for management journals. By making parts of their peer review process more transparent and inclusive, reputable journals can differentiate themselves from predatory journals and additionally contribute to a more developmental reviewing culture. This chapter extends research on peer review by utilizing and assessing an emerging methodology: automated textual analysis. In a corpus of 38 papers successfully revised for publication in Administrative Science Quarterly, the authors found that measures based on exact wording (measured by plagiarism detection) and sentence similarity (measured by Word Mover's Distance) performed well in capturing differences between original submissions and published papers. They identified the same overall pattern of revision that authors reported (intensive revision of Theory and Discussion sections, limited modification of Methods), and were strongly correlated with the turnover in references and hypotheses that occurred in the course of peer review. Automated textual analysis can usefully contribute to the study of manuscript change in peer review and other social scientific contexts, particularly as available textual corpora grow in size. The skills and knowledge required to engage in entrepreneurship are vital elements of participating fully in contemporary society. We consider the "crisis" in the liberal arts in the USA and show why entrepreneurship can and should be considered fundamental to a renewed and contemporary conception of the liberal arts. Integral to our arguments is a pragmatic view that considers research and teaching in entrepreneurship to be inextricably intertwined. By examining the study of organizations across several social science and humanities disciplines, we highlight the relative narrowness of the current empirical domain of much entrepreneurship research associated with business schools and management journals and develop examples showing the potential theoretical value of substantially expanding the empirical domain of entrepreneurship as organization creation for both research and teaching. Our argument is that the study of entrepreneurship as a new liberal art can be an important source of individual and group emancipation and a fundamental means through which entrepreneurs can become who they want to be while creating the impact on the world they envision. Purpose Literature reviews are essential tools for uncovering prevalent knowledge gaps, unifying fragmented bodies of scholarship, and taking stock of the cumulative evidence in a field of inquiry. Yet, successfully producing rigorous, coherent, thought-provoking, and practically relevant review articles represents an extremely complex and challenging endeavor. The purpose of this paper is to uncover the key requirements for expanding literature reviews’ reach within and across study domains and provide useful guidelines to prospective authors interested in generating this type of scientific output.Design/methodology/approach Drawing upon the authors’ own experience of producing literature reviews and a scrutiny of review papers in major management journals, the authors develop an end-to-end process of writing and publishing review articles of high potential impact.Findings The advanced process is broken down into two phases and seven sequential steps, each of them being described in terms of key actions, required skill sets, best practices, metrics of assessment and expected outcomes.Originality/value By tapping into the inherent complexity of review articles and demystifying the intricacies associated with pursuing this type of scientific research, the authors seek to inspire a wealth of new influential surveys of specialized literature. The study attempts to reveal the publication pattern of the scholarly literature published in "Parikalpana"-The KIIT Journal of Management from the period of 2004 to 2015 and to depict different facets of publication trends. Area of the study is confined to the publications accommodated in four volumes of the journal from 2004 to 2015 and employs the required bibliometric measures. The study reveals that the multi-authored articles of this journal are found more compared to the single and double authored publications. The degree of collaboration of the publications of this particular journal is 75. It is evident from the present study that, Male contributors (162) predominated over female contributors (62). The number of publications in the field of knowledge management is growing exponentially. There is a good amount of the literature published with respect to different aspects of knowledge intensive firms (KIFs). A good amount of literature is also available on different issues related to knowledge in different types of organisations. However, the literature addressing combined area of 'Knowledge issues' in KIFs is limited. The distribution of articles in these combined areas, based on year of publication, ranking of journals, comparative nature and countries in which studies were conducted, various aspects of knowledge-related effects and parameters causing such effects, indicates the interest among researchers, practitioners and policy-makers. But, it also highlights need of more studies in the years to come that widen the coverage of cause and effects related to different aspects of knowledge in KIFs. Also more studies from different countries, those related to clusters of KIFs and more comparative studies with that of Non-KIFs, have also become necessary. The paper aims to review different issues related to knowledge studied by researchers in the past, in a very specific context of knowledge intensive organisation and map those issues in structured categories, such that it will help in future research by identifying research gaps, relating to appropriate theories, conceptualising and empirically testing the new relations. This study replicates a prior content analysis of China-focused organizational behavior (OB) papers (Godkin, Valentine, Doughty, & Hoosier, 2005) covering the years 1991-2001. It informs four areas of concern: (1) how many studies of management in China have been published in management journals during the period 2002-2015 in comparison to those reported during 1991-2001; (2) the relative increase/decrease in the number of OB studies of China published in management journals over the same periods; (3) the nature and scope of these OB studies of China; and (4) the research gaps in the Chinafocused OB literature that require further inquiry. Despite significant scholarly debate about knowledge production in the management discipline through the peer-review journal processes, there is minimal discussion about the ethical treatment of the research subject in these publication processes. In contrast, the ethical scrutiny of management research processes within research institutions is often highly formalized and very focused on the protection of research participants. Hence, the question arises of how management publication processes should best account for the interests of the research subject, both in the narrow sense of specific research participants and in the broader understanding of the subject of the research. This question is particularly pertinent in light of significant codification of research ethics within academic institutions, and increasing self-reflection within the management discipline about the 'good' of management research and education. Findings from a survey and interviews with management journal editors (and others involved in journal publication) reveal a complex scenario; many editors believe that a formalized requirement within the journal publication process may have detrimental outcomes and, in fact, diminish the ethical integrity of management scholarship. Building on these findings, this paper argues that ethical concern for the research subject merely in terms of institutional rule compliance and avoidance of harm to individual participants is insufficient, and calls for explicitly positive engagement with both the individual and the collective subject of management research should receive due ethical consideration. An alternative model involving reflexive ethical consideration of research subjects across the publication process-with implications for role of authors, reviewers, editors, and research subjects-is outlined. Despite previous recommendations for improvement, a literature review reveals a minority of recent papers in management journals provide correct interpretations of regression coefficients for analyses of limited dependent variables. Furthermore, the use of marginal effects to interpret relationships has resulted in confusing and inaccurate conclusions. This paper recommends simpler and more informative alternatives to the calculation and reporting of marginal effects. In particular, two key recommendations involve choosing and explicitly stating a suitable measurement scale for dependent variables and explicitly stating whether relationships with independent variables are multiplicative or additive effects. These recommendations for reporting hypotheses, analysis and interpretations will not only improve the precision of future research but also provide superior interpretations of past literature. Significantly, this paper shows how standard regression coefficients can be used to interpret relationships between variables for any values of all variables. Other approaches such as the recommended inclusion of marginal effects and plots requires fixing other variables to specific values (such as their mean value) and so are of less value to readers. We elucidate the intellectual progression of the strategic management field by examining knowledge flows to and from the Strategic Management Journal (SMJ) during the period 1980-2009. We provide a detailed mapping of the evolution of the intellectual structure of the field and identify its input-output dependency relationships with other fields. Analysis of citation data using three analytic techniques: log-multiplicative model, pathfinder analysis, and entropy analysis allow us to discern strategic management's influence on and engagement with other disciplines. The results show that, within the intellectual universe of strategic management, SMJ has played a central role, both as a source and storer of knowledge. We notice that, over time, there has been a decline in practitioner orientation, greater communication with finance and sociology, and increasing linkages with international business and entrepreneurship. The participative pricing mechanisms field has developed over the last 10 years, with many research papers having been published in management-related periodicals. The number of papers on the pay-what-you-want (PWYW) mechanism, a type of participative pricing, published in academic periodicals has also increased year after year. Nevertheless, in the past literature, no formal research has explored the state of development and knowledge dissemination of this subject, and no studies have been conducted on the citation analysis of papers dealing with it. The growing interest of practitioners in PWYW poses an urgent challenge to researchers since they should understand the application of PWYW studies as they apply to direct future business practice. Consequently, this article has the following purposes: (1) to identify the state of development of the field, (2) to explore the citation of PWYW papers and the sequence of citations; (3) to identify the most influential researchers in the field, and finally (4) to identify the possible existence of research gaps that are important from the point of view of marketing. To achieve these goals, the authors use citation analysis based on Google Scholar and Harzings Publish or Perish, and use social network analysis based on software UCINET 6 for Windows (Borgatti et al. 2002). Meta-analysis research design is employed in order to obtain a quantitative description of the study in the literature. The unit analysis of the research is a paper on PWYW which was accessed through multi-search data bases. The findings show that the development of PWYW study has increased dramatically in both number and focus in the last five years. The analysis of the networks used in this article proves that the empiric study was salient, and the most influential researchers in the field have been identified. This paper examines response rates (RR) in published research in business and management journals. Its aim is to evaluate the efficacy of RR-enhancing strategies, explore differences in RR between sub-disciplines and geographical regions, provide a critical appraisal of RR in business and management research, and offer guidelines for assessing and improving RR in business and management research. Data are analysed from 1093 survey-based papers published between 2009 and 2013 in a representative sample of business and management journals. The authors comment on an article by H. Jiao and colleagues regarding development of a ranking of overseas Chines strategy scholars in terms of their contributions to the strategy research.
