In August 2021, Askja caldera switched to reinflation following ∼40 years of continuous deflation that was first measured some 20 years after its last eruption in 1961. Various lines of evidence, including from geodetic modeling, suggest that both the deflation and reinflation events are related to a shallow magma body. To better understand the subsurface plumbing system, we derive P‐wave velocity (Vp), S‐wave velocity (Vs), and Vp/Vs models of the mid‐upper crust by leveraging a new local earthquake traveltime data set. A cylindrical low‐velocity zone, ∼3 km wide and extending to ∼8 km below sea level (bsl), was imaged beneath the caldera. Within it, two distinct lower velocity and higher Vp/Vs anomalies are illuminated, one centered at ∼0.5 km and the other at ∼6 km bsl. The shallower anomaly lies directly beneath the zone of uplift and is likely associated with the current reinflation event. Several studies have related the subsidence to the deflation of a shallow magma body beneath the volcano, but this has not previously been detected by body wave tomography, which is a technique to image 3‐D variations in the subsurface, like a medical CT scan. It uses earthquakes that occur below and surrounding the volcano. In this study, we take advantage of a new earthquake data set to image the crust immediately beneath the volcano. We discover a shallow velocity anomaly that directly underlies the locus of surface uplift. This anomaly is likely caused by the presence of partial melt and higher temperatures, which is consistent with the existence of a shallow magma body that is causing the uplift. Understanding the nature of the current volcanic unrest is crucial, particularly in light of the large explosive eruption of 1875, which dispersed ash over large parts of Iceland. We investigated how spatial variations in tidal heating affect Io's isostatic topography at long wavelengths. The long‐wavelength relief is less than the 0.3 km uncertainty in Io's global shape. Assuming Airy isostasy, degree‐2 topography <0.3 km amplitude is only possible if surface heat flux varies spatially by <19% of the mean value. This is consistent with Io's volcano distribution and is possible if tidal heat is generated within and redistributed by a convecting layer underneath the lithosphere. However, that layer would require a viscosity <1010 Pa s. A magma ocean would have low enough viscosity but would not generate enough tidal heat internally. Conversely, assuming Pratt isostasy, we found ∼0.15 km degree‐2 topography is easily achievable. If a magma ocean was present, Airy isostasy would dominate; we therefore conclude that Io is unlikely to possess a magma ocean. The difference in observed radius is more likely if variation in tidal heat across Io affects crustal density rather than crustal thickness. Then, it is more likely that Io does not have a magma ocean. Petrogenetic models of martian magmas reflect the compositional, thermal, and geodynamical evolution of its interior. Most models for shergottite meteorites, which sampled relatively young martian basalts, invoke partial melting in a mantle plume head and filtering of the magma through the crust. Olivine-phyric, poikilitic, and olivine-gabbroic shergottites contain large, Mg-rich olivine crystals that record their parent magma history and are generally regarded to form initially in slow cooling, near-equilibrium environments in the lower crust. Here we report the unexpected common occurrence of Mg-rich olivine crystals with chained, mantled dendritic, and skeletal morphologies that reflect rapid growth, requiring relatively large degrees of undercooling and possibly moderate to fast cooling rates. Novel 3D analysis of crystal textures and core Fe-Mg content demonstrates that chained and mantled dendritic olivines in enriched shergottites are among the earliest-formed crystals, indicating rapid crystal growth during initial magma pooling in the lower crust, a process that has not been documented in Earth basalts. In geochemically depleted shergottites, skeletal olivines appear later in the crystallization sequence, but before the final eruption and solidification. Geochemically intermediate samples do not contain rapid-growth olivine, indicating extended equilibrium growth. The frequent occurrence of chained, mantled dendritic, and skeletal olivines in enriched and depleted shergottites suggests that the conditions needed for rapid growth are common for mafic magmatism on Mars, and that these magmas experience complex thermal histories characterized by discrete episodes of large undercooling at depth. We propose that the 495-470 Ma Ollo de Sapo magmatism in the Iberian Massif was the result of a mantle plume event in the Furongian-Early Ordovician. This plume was located beneath the northwestern margin of Gondwana and caused rapid and extensive melting of Ediacaran arc-related crustal rocks and their derived sediments. Mafic magmas due to plume partial melting underplated the crust and were emplaced at mid-lower crustal levels (~15km), and provided the heat for crustal melting. Manifestations of the plume include (i) pronounced magnetic anomalies in the region which match the distribution of Ollo de Sapo rocks, (ii) the Toledanian unconformity (and gap), which is attributed to thermal doming, and (iii) the significant thickness variations in Lower to Middle Ordovician sedimentary successions in adjacent areas. In a more regional context, we infer that the plume was one of a cluster of plumes impacting the Gondwana periphery and that it contributed to the birth and development of the Rheic Ocean throughout Gondwana margin breakup. Iron oxide-copper-gold (IOCG) deposits are a vital source of copper and critical elements for emerging clean technologies. Andean-type IOCG deposits form in continental arcs undergoing extension, and they have a temporal relationship with magmatism although they do not exhibit a close spatial relation with the causative intrusions. The processes required to form IOCG deposits and their potential connections to iron oxide–apatite (IOA)-type mineralization remain poorly constrained, as well as the characteristics of magmatism linked to both deposit types. Here we combine zircon U–Pb geochronology with zircon trace element geochemistry of intrusive rocks associated with the Candelaria deposit, one of the world's largest IOCG deposits, to unravel distinctive signatures diagnostic of magmatic fertility. Our results reveal a marked transition in the geochemistry of intrusions in the Candelaria district, characterized by changes in the redox state, water content and temperature of magmas over time. The oldest magmatic stage (~ 128–125 Ma), prior to the formation of the Candelaria deposit, was characterized by zircon Eu/Eu* ratios of 0.20–0.42, and redox conditions of ΔFMQ − 0.4 to + 1.0. The earliest magmatic stage related to the formation of Fe-rich mineralization at Candelaria (118–115 Ma) exhibits low zircon Eu/Eu* ratios (0.09–0.18), low oxygen fugacity values (ΔFMQ ~− 1.8 to + 0.2) and relatively high crystallization temperatures. In contrast, the youngest stage at ~ 111–108 Ma shows higher zircon Eu/Eu* (~ 0.37–0.69), higher oxygen fugacity values (ΔFMQ ~ + 0.4 to + 1.3) and a decrease in crystallization temperatures, conditions that are favorable for the transport and precipitation of sulfur and chalcophile elements. We conclude that Candelaria was formed through two distinct ore-forming stages: the first associated with a reduced, high temperature, water-poor magma developed under a low tectonic stress, followed by a more oxidized, water-rich, and low temperature magmatic event related to a compressional regime. The first event led to Fe-rich and S-poor IOA-type mineralization, while the second event with geochemical signatures similar to those of porphyry copper systems, generated the Cu- and S-rich mineralization. Compositions of island arc and back-arc basin basalts are often used to trace the recycling of subducted materials. However, the contribution of subducted components to the mantle source during initial arc rifting before back-arc basin spreading is not yet well constrained. The northernmost Mariana arc is ideal for studying this because the transition from rifting to back-arc spreading is happening here. Here we report major and trace element and Pb isotopic compositions of olivine-hosted melt inclusions from lavas erupted during initial rifting at 24°N (NSP-24) and compare them with those in active arc front at 21°N and mature back-arc basin at 18°N. NSP-24 high-K melt inclusions have highly radiogenic Pb compositions and are close to those of the HIMU end-member, suggesting the presence of this component in the magma source. The HIMU-like component may be stored in the over-riding plate and released into arc magma with rifting. HIMU-type seamounts may be subducted elsewhere beneath the Mariana arc, but obvious HIMU-type components appear only in the initial stages of arc rifting due to the low melting degree and being consumed during the process of back-arc spreading. During their formation, terrestrial planets underwent a magma ocean phase during which their metallic cores segregated from their silicate mantles and their early atmospheres formed. These planetary formation processes resulted in a redistribution of the abundances of highly volatile elements (HVEs, such as H, C, N, and S) between the planets' metallic cores, silicate mantles, and atmospheres. This review presents the numerous experimental techniques used to simulate the conditions and identify the parameters that influenced the behavior of HVEs during planetary formation. We also review the analytical techniques used to characterize the different types of experimental samples and quantify the distribution of HVEs between metallic and silicate phases, as well as their solubilities in silicate glasses. This exhaustive review targets students and young researchers beginning their work on the subject, or, more generally, scientists seeking a better understanding of this field of research. Basaltic volcanism on the Moon produced low- and high-Ti mare basalt suites that are also distinct with respect to their iron, titanium, and magnesium isotopic compositions. Here, the equilibrium fractionation of Fe and Ti isotopes between ilmenite and melt was experimentally investigated in order to evaluate the role of ilmenite in generating the isotopic compositional variability among the lunar mare basalts. Ilmenite crystallization experiments were conducted using two bulk compositions: an ilmenite-saturated basaltic andesite and an ilmenite-saturated Apollo 14 black glass, and the Fe and Ti isotopic compositions of the experimental ilmenites and glass (quenched melt) were analyzed using solution MC-ICPMS after hand-picking. Additionally, Nuclear Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (NRIXS) measurements on synthetic ilmenite were conducted and compared to previous NRIXS measurements on synthetic lunar glasses in order to derive temperature-dependent equilibrium ilmenite-melt Fe isotopic fractionations. Experimentally determined ilmenite-melt fractionations were then incorporated into a lunar magma ocean crystallization model that tracks the major element and isotopic compositional evolution of lunar magma ocean cumulates and residual liquid. There is good agreement between the Fe equilibrium isotopic fractionation measured by NRIXS and the laboratory equilibration experiments, and we find that the isotopic fractionation is sensitive to ilmenite compositional differences (0 vs. 10% Fe3+). Further, the light Ti isotopic composition of ilmenite relative to the melt (Δ 49 Ti = ilmenite-melt − 0.09 ± 0.03 ‰ at 1100 ∘C) is consistent with the higher coordination of Ti in ilmenite relative to melts and results of previous studies. The modeled Ti isotopic compositions for lunar magma ocean cumulates display Ti isotopic variability sufficient to explain the low- and high-Ti mare basalt sources. However, the difference in Fe isotopic composition between the low- and high-Ti mare basalts cannot be attributed solely to ilmenite fractionation. Instead, Fe isotopic fractionation by additional products of lunar magma ocean crystallization, such as clinopyroxene, is required to generate the inferred Fe and Mg isotopic variability in the lunar mantle. Alternatively, the Fe and Mg isotopic compositions of the lunar mare basalts may indicate Fe-Mg interdiffusion has occurred in the Ti-rich component of the mare basalt source regions via reaction between ilmenite cumulates and the olivine- and pyroxene-rich lunar mantle. Despite of the relatively rare occurrence of alkaline igneous rocks on Earth, they are the most diverse group of igneous rocks due to variations in their mineral assemblages and geochemical compositions. Alkaline igneous rocks are generally characterized by Si undersaturation, and K-Na (and in some cases C) enrichment. Although there is no unified alkaline igneous rock classification scheme, diagrams such as total alkalis-SiO2 or K2O-SiO2 can be used to classify alkaline igneous rocks. The origins of silica-saturated alkaline rocks (SiO2>52 wt.%) are relatively complex because multiple episodes of magmatism are often involved, therefore most studies have focused on the origins of silica-undersaturated alkaline magmas. Numerous experimental petrological studies have been conducted in the past few decades. Initially, it was considered that enrichment of trace elements was only achieved by low-degree partial melting of mantle peridotite, but the experimental melts could not reproduce the geochemical composition of natural alkaline igneous rocks. Subsequent studies have focused on carbonate-bearing eclogites that represent the average component of subducted oceanic crust. Although experimental studies indicate that silica-undersaturated and alkali-oversaturated melts can be generated from eclogites, some studies have considered that natural silica-undersaturated alkaline igneous rocks are the result of multi-stage source enrichment by incompatible elements. Low-degree partial melts of the mantle can be emplaced in the lithospheric mantle, forming veins consisting of phlogopite, amphibole, and pyroxene. Melting experiments including these components show that the produced melts better reproduce the naturally occurring silica-undersaturated alkaline magmas. Silica-deficient alkaline igneous rocks occur in various tectonic settings. Those in intraplate and divergent settings (i.e., mainly continental rifts) normally involve contributions from recycled components such as subducted slabs at the mantle transition zone (MTZ) or metasomatized lithospheric mantle. At convergent plate boundaries, silica-undersaturated alkaline magmas can be derived by the melting of mélange or the focused breakdown of phlogopite at back-arc depths. We compiled global data for alkaline igneous rocks and discovered that silica-undersaturated alkaline igneous rocks in continental collisional zones are K-rich and differ from those from other tectonic settings. We suggest that subducted continental sediment is an important K-rich end-member, which contributes a large amount of K to the alkaline magmas in the collision zone. Moreover, the solidus of K-rich minerals in the subducted plate implies that K can only participate in magmatism in the subduction zone. Before the plate reaches a depth of ∼300 km, the mica-group minerals, K-feldspar, evaporitic minerals, and other K-rich minerals are gradually consumed and rarely participate in deeper processes. In contrast, relatively Na-rich minerals such as pyroxene can be transported into the deeper mantle with eclogitic oceanic crust, and the resultant melt can enter the lithosphere owing to convective mantle flow. The Gulf of Guinea exhibits a continuous emission of narrow-band and long-period signals (16, 26 and 27 s) on teleseismic records, yet the underlying excitation mechanism remains unclear. This study establishes a connection between these tremors and the vibration of thin, decoupled crustal plates at unexplored volcanoes in the gulf. We first formulate the damped plate oscillation equation, by incorporating the vibration of the thin surface crustal plate and magma flow in the subsurface sill. The findings reveal that a fundamental-mode vibration with a period of several dozen seconds can be induced by a crustal plate that is less than 1.0 km thick but extends over tens of kilometres in both length and width, given a subsurface sill depth exceeding 10.0 cm. The thin plate hypothesis also allows for excitation of a few overtone modes, but such waves in higher frequencies diminish over long distances, leaving only the monotonous fundamental-mode vibration at teleseismic stations. The long duration of Guinea tremors at each recurrence is attributed to the presence of low viscosity basaltic magma, which influences the damping factor. Direct wave loads at the shallow gulf serve as the primary vibration source, accounting for seasonal variations and recurring patterns. Sporadic energy bursts may also occur due to large storms. Radiation patterns of Guinea tremors are linked to the geometric structure of the thin plate. Our theoretical estimates of tremor spectra closely align with observed data, confirming the model's accuracy in capturing reported Guinea tremor characteristics. It is widely acknowledged that thermal models clearly demonstrate that crustal magma bodies should solidify rapidly upon emplacement. Small plutons can cool below the solidus in thousands of years, while even large plutons require hundreds of thousands of years, but not more than a million years. However, recent U-Pb zircon geochronological data contradict these results, strongly suggesting that magmatic systems are often characterized by protracted events. Therefore, a conceptual framework that reconciles thermal models and the geochronology data is necessary. The Devonian foreland magmatism of the Sierra de San Luis is made up of two distinctive suites, the Monzonite suite (<65 wt.% SiO2) and the Granite suite (>65 wt.% SiO2), both emplaced at ca. 3.7 kbar. Classification of the studied Devonian granitoids is debatable because they have a hybrid I- to A-type granite signature. Based on a robust geochronological U-Pb zircon dataset we corroborate the development of a protracted magmatic activity with three major crystallization events for this Devonian magmatism: 391 ± 1, 384 ± 1, and 379 ± 2 Ma. Considering these geochronological data, we postulate the presence of a deep mush reservoir, where a prolonged magmatic activity, permitted the prolonged crystallization of antecrysts (ca. 395–384 Ma). Migration of the parental magma from the mush reservoir zone occurred near the time of emplacement and culminated in the formation of an ephemeral magma chamber located at shallow levels, where zircon autocrysts crystallized (ca. 379 Ma). Age spectra reported within individual samples support the idea of a massive migration of magma when conditions were favourable (e.g. thermally matured crust). Individual crystallization ages recorded by monazites hosted in two-mica granites are comparable to those obtained from zircons, supporting the presence of a long-lasting hot source. Additional geochronological data indicate that a later thermal event (ca. 353 Ma) could have partially affected some areas of the Devonian magmatic zircons promoting Pb loss, with subsequent partial resetting of the isotopic clock. Granulites from the Narryer Terrane in the northern Yilgarn Craton, Australia, record evidence for high to ultrahigh thermal gradients during the Meso–Neoarchean. U–Pb zircon ages reflect a complex history of high‐grade, prolonged and poly‐phase metamorphism, with evidence for several thermal pulses at ca. 2745–2725, ca. 2690–2660, and ca. 2650–2610 Ma. Forward phase equilibrium modeling on rocks with varying bulk compositions and mineral assemblages suggests that peak temperatures reached 880–920°C at pressures of 5.5–6 kbar at ca. 2690–2665 Ma, followed by near‐isobaric cooling. These new P–T results also indicate that these rocks experienced some of the hottest thermal gradient regimes in the metamorphic record (≥150°C/kbar). Based on P–T models, U–Pb ages, and geochemical constraints, our data suggest that the geodynamic setting for the formation of this unusual thermal regime is ultimately tied to cratonization of the Yilgarn Craton. Previous models have inferred that ultrahigh thermal gradients and coeval large‐scale anatexis in the Narryer Terrane were primarily generated by mantle‐driven processes, despite most of the lithological, isotopic, and geochemical observations being at odds with the expected geological expression of large‐scale mantle upwelling. We re‐evaluate the mechanisms for high‐grade metamorphism in the Narryer terrane and propose that long‐lived high crustal temperatures between ca. 2690 Ma and 2610 Ma were instead facilitated by elevated radiogenic heat production in thickened, highly differentiated ancient crust. The thermal activity of a magmatic–hydrothermal system commonly changes at various stages of volcanic activity. Few studies have provided an entire picture of the thermal activity of such a system over an eruptive cycle, which is essential for understanding the subsurface heat transport process that culminates in an eruption. This study quantitatively evaluated a sequence of thermal activity associated with two phreatic eruptions in 2021 at Aso volcano. We estimated plume-laden heat discharge rates and corresponding H2O flux during 2020–2022 by using two simple methods. We then validated the estimated H2O flux by comparison with volcanic gas monitoring results. Our results showed that the heat discharge rate varied substantially throughout the eruptive cycle. During the pre-eruptive quiescent period (June 2020–May 2021), anomalously large heat discharge (300–800 MW) were observed that were likely due to enhanced magma convection degassing. During the run-up period (June–October 2021), there was no evident change in heat discharge (300–500 MW), but this was accompanied by simultaneous pressurization and heating of an underlying hydrothermal system. These signals imply progress of partial sealing of the hydrothermal system. In the co-eruptive period, the subsequent heat supply from a magmatic region resulted in additional pressurization, which led to the first eruption (October 14, 2021). The heat discharge rates peaked (2000–4000 MW) the day before the second eruption (October 19, 2021), which was accompanied by sustained pressurization of the magma chamber that eventually resulted in a more explosive eruption. In the post-eruptive period, enhanced heat discharge (~ 1000 MW) continued for four months, and finally returned to the background level of the quiescent period (< 300 MW) in early March 2022. Despite using simple models, we quantitatively tracked transient thermal activity and revealed the underlying heat transport processes throughout the Aso 2021 eruptive activity. Standard geodetic models simplify magma sheet injection to the opening of geometrically simple dislocations in a linearly elastic, homogeneous medium. Intrusion geometries are often complex, however, and non‐elastic deformation mechanisms can dominate the response of heterogeneous rocks to magma‐induced stresses. We used three‐dimensional near‐surface displacements of a scaled laboratory experiment in which a steeply inclined analog magma sheet was injected into granular material. We ran forward models and inverted for eight parameters of an "Okada‐type" tensile rectangular dislocation in a homogeneous, isotropic, and linearly elastic half‐space. Displacements generated by a forward model largely mismatch the experimental displacements, but full or restricted non‐linear inversions of geometrical parameters reduce the residual displacements. The intrusion opening, dip, depth, and to a lesser degree length and width mismatch the most between the experiment and inversion results, whereas location and strike mismatch the least. Our results challenge assumptions made by many analytical and geodetic models. Plain Language Summary: Standard models of volcano deformation simplify a magma intrusion to simple geometries injected in a medium with simplified mechanical behavior. However, intrusion geometries are often complex in nature. Rocks also predominantly respond in a complex manner to magma intrusion. We used the three‐dimensional displacement of the surface of a scaled laboratory experiment in which golden syrup, a magma analog, was injected into a sand‐plaster mixture, an analog for the Earth's crust. Our forward models and inversions show that the modeled simplified geometry and mechanical response largely mismatch the laboratory experiment outcome as observed in X‐ray Computed Tomography imagery. Our results challenge the assumptions made by models commonly used to model and interpret deformation signals measured in volcanically active areas. Transport properties of silicate melts control magma ocean dynamics on the early terrestrial planets and rocky exoplanets. Here we calculate the viscosity (transport of momentum) of peridotite liquid at potential magma ocean conditions (0–159 GPa, 2,200–6,000 K) using ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. We find that, unlike MgSiO3 or basaltic melts, the viscosity of the highly depolymerized peridotite liquid (a) increases monotonically with pressure without an anomalous drop and (b) is lower than those of other melts over the entire mantle pressure range. Low viscosity would promote fractional crystallization in a less polymerized magma ocean and thus contribute to mantle heterogeneity from its earliest stage. Given the compositional dependence of magma ocean properties, emphasis on multicomponent bulk silicate Earth‐like composition, instead of simple end‐members, are rendered necessary, in order to better understand high‐energy planetary accretion processes and their aftermaths. Plain Language Summary: In the aftermath of impacts, widely envisaged scenarios taking place on early terrestrial planets, the silicate mantle (i.e., rocks) experiences extreme temperatures that lead to extensive melting (i.e., magma ocean) on those planets. The Okinawa Trough is an incipient back-arc basin formed by the subduction of the Philippine Sea Plate beneath the Eurasian Plate and is a natural laboratory for studying basin evolution, magmatism, and crust-mantle interactions during the early stages of back-arc spreading. Back-arc spreading and recent magmatism are occurring mainly in the Middle Okinawa Trough (MOT) and Southern Okinawa Trough (SOT). In order to investigate the magmatism in the Okinawa Trough, volcanic rock samples from the MOT and SOT were analysed for Fe – Sr – Nd – Pb – Hf isotopic compositions. The Fe isotopic compositions of basaltic andesite samples from the SOT are similar to or lower than MORBs. The fluid/melt derived from the subducted slab, especially the fluid dehydrated from slab serpentinites and sediment-derived melts, entered the overlying depleted mantle wedge and participated in magma generation, which resulted in the low δ56Fe values of the SOT basaltic magmas. The δ56Fe values of volcanic rocks from the MOT increase with increasing SiO2 contents, suggesting a gradual enrichment of heavy Fe isotopes during the evolution of the magma as it ascended to the surface. While the Sr – Nd – Pb – Hf isotopic compositions do not vary significantly, suggesting that the different samples are the products of different degrees of crystal fractionation of comagma. The fractional crystallization of olivine, pyroxene, and ilmenite minerals, which enrich in light Fe isotopes, resulted in the gradual increase in Fe isotopic values of magma during its evolution. The dacites and rhyolites from the southernmost Okinawa Trough have the similar δ56Fe values with the basaltic andesite and the basalt from the SOT and MOT, accompanied by significantly lower Nd and Hf isotope ratios relative to basalts, reflecting that the contamination of crustal materials would not change the magma in Fe isotope compositions evidently. Compared with the MOT, the volcanic rocks from the SOT was more affected by subduction components on their underlying mantle, and those from the southernmost experienced more contamination by crustal materials in the evolving magma. There are several large intrusions composed of 60–90% leucogranites within Eastern Kazakhstan. The age of intrusions was determined that allows to conclude about the two stages of leucogranite intrusive magmatism: (1) in the Early Permian and (2) in the Early Triassic. Their formation occurred in an post-orogenic or intraplate geodynamic setting. The geochemical features of the leucogranites were considered that allows to conclude about the petrogenetic mechanisms of leucogranite magmas forming. They were formed as a result of partial melting of crustal substrates under the thermal influence of mafic magmas. The origin of the wide range of sulfur isotope compositions (i.e., δ34S) measured in arc rocks remains debated. While the observed δ34S variability has been attributed to slab-related fluids that flux the sub-arc mantle, others have argued that it primarily reflects crustal-derived processes by some combination of magmatic differentiation, country rock assimilation, and/or degassing. Here, we present new whole rock sulfur isotopes for the Late Cretaceous Bear Valley Intrusive Suite (BVIS) that represents a continuous arc crustal section in the southern Sierra Nevada Batholith, exposing lower crustal mafic cumulates and cogenetic mid-upper crustal tonalites. Our data reveal a range of δ34S-depleted values (–1.2 to − 5.1‰) for the BVIS with overlapping δ34S between mafic cumulates and tonalites. Complementary δ34S measurements of structurally concordant metasedimentary pendants indicate δ34S-depleted values (–11.5 to − 5.2‰) for deep metasedimentary rocks compared to δ34S-enriched values (+ 1.6 to + 6.4‰) for shallower ones. Quantitative mixing models suggest that assimilation of crustal-derived sulfur from metasedimentary rocks in the lower crust can account for the δ34S-depleted values in the BVIS, whereas assimilation of shallower ones is unlikely. Sulfur degassing modelling indicates that the range of δ34S-depleted values observed within mid-upper crustal tonalites can be reproduced by degassing ~60–80% of the initial melt sulfur at fO2 ≤ FMQ + 1 with initial H2O content of 10–12 wt%. Finally, the identical ranges of δ34S values within the tonalites and mafic cumulates argue for limited sulfur isotope fractionation related to magmatic sulfide immiscibility. Although assimilation, magma degassing and sulfide immiscibility are not mutually exclusive during crustal magmatic processes, field, thermal and geochemical evidence favor lower crustal-derived sulfur assimilation as the primary mechanism to explain the range of δ34S- depleted values within the mafic cumulates, which are ultimately inherited by the derivative tonalitic melts. If primitive arc magmas are primarily oxidized or if they acquire their oxidizing character during crustal evolution remains debated. Mineral-melt V partitioning is extremely redox sensitive and has the potential to resolve this debate, but critical low-temperature, hydrous experimental partitioning data are limited. We present new experimental V partitioning data for olivine-melt, spinel-melt, and clinopyroxene-melt based on the ≤ 1200 °C, hydrous basalt phase equilibrium experiments of Pichavant et al. (Geochim Cosmochim Acta 66:2193–2209, 2002) and Pichavant and Macdonald (Contrib Mineral Petrol 154:535–558, 2007). Combined with published experimental data, we use our olivine-melt V partitioning coefficients to show that—contrary to previous conclusions—hydrous melt composition, i.e. melt H2O concentration in addition to the concentration of other melt components, affects V partitioning and thus calculated fO2, systematically overestimating fO2 for olivine-melt equilibrated at high melt H2O concentration. False absolute fO2 values and false oxidation or reduction trends may be inferred. Based on these findings, we have calibrated a set of new olivine-melt oxybarometers applicable to hydrous arc magmas partially crystallized at ~ 1025–1350 °C. In a case study on a high-Mg basalt from St. Vincent, Lesser Antilles, we show that olivine-melt V oxybarometry records oxidizing near-liquidus conditions (~ QFM + 1.8) and possibly limited oxidation (~ 0.3 log units) during intermittent crustal magma storage. Crystal‐hosted melt embayments and melt inclusions partially record magmatic processes at depth, but it is not always obvious how to interpret this record. One impediment is our incomplete understanding of how embayments and melt inclusions form. In this study, we investigate the formation mechanism of embayments and melt inclusions during quartz growth to quantify the relationship between the compositions of the entrapped and average melt. We study the growth of embayments and inclusions through direct numerical simulations that couple the growth of a crystal surface with the evolution of the concentrations of incompatible components in the surrounding melt. We find that H2O is more enriched in the interior of defects on crystal surface compared to the exterior. The resultant lower disequilibrium in the defect interior causes lower growth rate than in the exterior, elongating the defect into an embayment. If crystal growth stops, the composition in the embayment equilibrates with the average melt within days to months. If crystal growth continues until the embayment neck closes, a melt inclusion forms. The melt entrapped by both embayments and melt inclusions is enriched in incompatible components, such as H2O and CO2. In addition to inclusion size, the enrichment of incompatible components in melt inclusions also depends on component diffusivity and the crystal growth regime. High‐diffusivity components like H2O have similar enrichment levels in all scenarios, while lower‐diffusivity components like CO2 are more enriched in melt inclusions with smaller sizes or formed in continuous crystal growth. Open conduit volcanoes erupt with the highest frequency on Earth. Their activity is characterized by an outgassing flux that largely exceeds the gas that could be released by the erupted magma; and by frequent small explosions intercalated by larger events that pose a significant risk to locals, tourists, and scientists. Thus, identifying the signs of an impending larger explosion is of utmost importance for the mitigation of volcanic hazard. Larger explosive events have been associated with the sudden ascent of volatile rich magmas, however, where and why magma accumulates within the plumbing system remains unclear. Here we show that the interaction between CO2‐rich fluids and magma spontaneously leads to the accumulation of volatile‐rich, low density and gravitationally unstable magma at depth, without the requirement of permeability barriers. CO2‐flushing forces the exsolution of water and the increase of magma viscosity, which proceeds from the bottom of the magma column upward. This rheological configuration unavoidably leads to the progressive thickening of a gas‐rich and low density (i.e., gravitationally unstable) layer at the bottom of the feeding system. Our calculations account for observations, gas monitoring and petrological data; moreover, they provide a basis to trace the approach to deeply triggered large or paroxysmal eruptions and estimate their size from monitoring data. Our model is finally applied to Stromboli volcano, an emblematic example of open conduit volcano, but can be applied to any other open conduit volcano globally and offers a framework to anticipate the occurrence of unexpectedly large eruptions. Genuine non‐double‐couple (non‐DC) components of a seismic source, defined here as the non‐DC components that are not due to summation of pure double‐couple (DC) components, provide important insight into special physical processes in non‐earthquake sources such as explosion, volcano eruption and collapse etc. Yet they remain challenging to be resolved. To address the issue and explore the physical mechanism of those special events, we develop a waveform‐polarity‐based moment tensor (WPMT) inversion method and employ it to study physical process in the 2014–2015 Bárðarbunga volcano event sequence. The WPMT method incorporates P‐wave polarity data and seismic waveforms in the source inversion, designs a source simplicity test to check possible complex rupture in the seismic source, and employs a simulated annealing algorithm to search the best source solution. The simplicity test checks consistency of the source processes in the initiation stage of the event and the major energy release process of the event, thus ensuring that the inferred non‐DC components are genuine to the seismic source. Real event and synthetic tests indicate that the WPMT method can identify and resolve genuine non‐DC components in a seismic source. The WPMT inversions of the Bárðarbunga sequence yield many genuine non‐DC source components and reveal that the eruptions are accompanied by seismic activities in depths of 1–5 km with magma migrations out of chambers, collapses of conduits, failures of normal faults, and a magma recharge at a depth of 9 km accompanied by a failure on a nearby normal fault. All instrumented basaltic caldera collapses have generated Mw > 5 very long period earthquakes. However, previous studies of source dynamics have been limited to lumped models treating the caldera block as rigid, leaving open questions related to how ruptures initiate and propagate around the ring fault, and the seismic expressions of those dynamics. We present the first 3D numerical model capturing the nucleation and propagation of ring fault rupture, the mechanical coupling to the underlying viscoelastic magma, and the associated seismic wavefield. We demonstrate that seismic radiation, neglected in previous models, acts as a damping mechanism reducing coseismic slip by up to half, with effects most pronounced for large magma chamber volume/ring fault radius or highly compliant crust/compressible magma. Viscosity of basaltic magma has negligible effect on collapse dynamics. In contrast, viscosity of silicic magma significantly reduces ring fault slip. We use the model to simulate the 2018 Kı̄lauea caldera collapse. Three stages of collapse, characterized by ring fault rupture initiation and propagation, deceleration of the downward‐moving caldera block and magma column, and post‐collapse resonant oscillations, in addition to chamber pressurization, are identified in simulated and observed (unfiltered) near‐field seismograms. A detailed comparison of simulated and observed displacement waveforms corresponding to collapse earthquakes with hypocenters at various azimuths of the ring fault reveals a complex nucleation phase for earthquakes initiated on the northwest. Our numerical simulation framework will enhance future efforts to reconcile seismic and geodetic observations of caldera collapse with conceptual models of ring fault and magma chamber dynamics. Basaltic fissure eruptions, which are the most common type of eruption on Earth, are fed by dykes which mediate magma transport through the crust. Dyke propagation processes are important because they determine the geometry of the transport pathway and the nature of any geophysical signals associated with magma ascent. Here, we investigate small‐scale (mm–cm wide) banding features at the margins of dykes in the Teno Massif (Tenerife, Spain) and the Columbia River Basalt Province (CRBP) (USA). Similar marginal bands have been reported for dykes in numerous localities around the world. Dyke margins record valuable information about propagation because they are the first material to solidify against the host rock at the propagating dyke tip. We find that the marginal bands are defined by cyclic variations in phenocryst concentration and vesicularity, and we infer that these cyclic variations in texture are a product of cyclic variations in magma flow rates and pressures within the dyke tip. This indicates that dyke emplacement occurs in pulses, with propagation repeatedly hindered by the rapid cooling and solidification of magma in the narrow dyke tip. Using a 1D conduction model, we estimate the time taken for each band to cool and solidify, which provides a timescale of several minutes to tens of minutes for the pulses. The occurrence of similar bands in various volcanic settings suggests that pulsatory propagation is a common, if not ubiquitous, process associated with dyke emplacement. Clinopyroxenite xenoliths comprising cumulus clinopyroxene ± amphibole together with intercumulus phlogopite ± olivine ± apatite ± titanite form a large part of the xenolith load in the oldest deposits of the Rockeskyllerkopf Volcanic Complex (RVC) in the West Eifel volcanic field. The xenoliths also contain xenocrysts of olivine and clinopyroxene derived from mantle peridotite and clinopyroxene from lower crustal granulite. The clinopyroxenite xenoliths are divided into five groups on the basis of their modal mineralogy and mineral compositions. Groups 1 to 4 define a continuous compositional trend indicative of fractionation of a mafic alkaline magma. Group 5 xenoliths are compositionally distinct and have been tentatively linked to high pressure crystallization of phonolitic magma within the RVC system. Thermobarometry of the group 1 to 4 xenoliths indicates that they crystallized between 1 and 4 kilobars, equivalent to a depth of 4 to 14 km. Group 1 to 3 xenoliths all crystallized at between 1050°C and 1150°C, whereas the amphibole-rich group 4 xenoliths give temperature estimates of ~900°C. The clinopyroxenites share a common parent magma with clinopyroxene–phlogopite veins found in subcontinental lithospheric mantle xenoliths. However, the vein forming mama was richer in incompatible elements, in particular Zr and Hf and is interpreted to be an early formed batch of magma with the clinopyroxenites crystallizing from magma derived from the same mantle, which had been depleted by the earlier phase of melting. Intrusion of magma began around 155 ky prior to the eruption of the RVC. Fe–Mg interdiffusion profiles in zoned clinopyroxene show that the magma that formed the xenoliths was present in the crust for up to 28 ky prior to the eruption. However, most samples give interdiffusion times between 1.5 and 9.9 ky. Based on xenocryst residence times and the calculated P–T conditions for clinopyroxene, there were at least seven separate batches of magma emplaced below Rockeskyllerkopf, probably as sills. Fluorite-dominated rocks are occasionally found in association with carbonatites, but their geologic and petrologic relations are rarely reported. The Dunkeldyk area of the Pamir mountains in south-eastern Tajikistan contains dikes of distinctive rocks composed of calcite, fluorite, celestine-barite, sulfides, apatite, with minor quartz, biotite, and REE fluorcarbonates. The dikes have sharp contacts with the host (meta-)sedimentary rocks and layering with ribbons, ranging from fluorite-bearing calcite carbonatites to fluoritites (rocks with >50% fluorite). The fluoritites are characterized by high Ca, F, Ba, Sr, REE, and S coupled with anomalously low O. The geologic relations and textures suggest a magmatic origin of the dikes from melts close to calcite–fluorite eutectic that experienced nucleation-controlled differentiation during the crystallization of dikes and the formation of fluoritite cumulates in larger intrusions. The Dunkeldyk dikes demonstrate that sizable geological bodies of fluorite-dominated rocks could form from carbonate–fluoride melts originating from the differentiation of alkaline silicate magmas. The nearly continuous volcanic eruption record at Mt. Etna dating back ~700 years provides an excellent opportunity to investigate the geochemical evolution of a highly active volcano. Of particular interest is elucidating the cause of selective enrichment in alkali elements (K and Rb) and 87Sr/86Sr observed in various episodes of past activity. More recently, this alkali enrichment trend started to manifest in the 17th century and accelerated after 1971, and was accompanied by an increase in the volume, frequency, and explosivity of eruptions. Explanations for this signature include recharge of alkali-enriched magmas and/or crustal contamination from the subvolcanic basement. This study quantitatively examines the role of crustal contamination in post-1971 Etnean magma compositions via hundreds of open-system phase equilibria and trace element calculations based upon whole-rock major oxides, trace elements, 87Sr/86Sr ratios, and mineral compositional data. Available pre-1971 petrochemical data are satisfactorily reproduced by fractional crystallization of a high whole-rock MgO (12–17 wt.%), Ni (135–285 ppm), and Cr (920–1330 ppm) parental magma composition that is documented in Etna's ~4-ka fall-stratified deposit. Observed post-1971 whole-rock and glass trends and phase equilibria are reproduced via modeled assimilation of a skarn and flysch mixture, lithologies that represent the uppermost 10 to 15 km of sedimentary rocks beneath Etna. Notably, models show that K2O (wt.%) and Rb (ppm) behave incompatibly during partial melting of skarn/flysch. Additionally, the observed elevation of 87Sr/86Sr in post-1971 samples is consistent with the addition of radiogenic Sr from wallrock partial melts. In best-fit models, which yield observed post-1971 K2O, Rb, and 87Sr/86Sr trends, ~17% anatectic melt is assimilated and there may be a subordinate stoped wallrock component of ≤2% (percentage is relative to the starting mass of pristine magma). Previous work has shown that metasomatized spinel lherzolite and garnet pyroxenite can be melted in different proportions to reproduce long- and short-term changes observed in Etna's geochemical products. We propose that the alkali enrichment signature observed after 1971 can be fully explained through the combination of mantle heterogeneity and crustal contamination. In particular, up to ~20% crustal input coupled with mantle heterogeneity of primitive melts explains the geochemical signals quite well. The influence of crustal contamination on post-1971 lavas is, in part, the result of frequent recharge of magmas that thermally primed the middle to upper crust and enhanced its partial melting. The major- and trace-element compositions of amphiboles in andesite from Quaternary Yufu Volcano, northeastern Kyushu, Japan were analysed to investigate the generation processes of andesitic magma from Yufu Volcano. The amphiboles in andesite from Yufu volcano can be divided into two groups based on major-element composition: pargasite and magnesio-hornblende. To estimate temperature, pressure, and major- and trace-element compositions of melts in equilibrium with amphiboles, we used the recently proposed methods that can calculate temperature, pressure, major element compositions, and partition coefficients of trace-element between amphibole and melt using only the major-element compositions of amphibole. The estimated temperature, pressure, and major-element composition of melt in equilibrium with the amphibole phenocrysts indicate that each group crystallised under different conditions. These differences suggest that two magma chambers at different depths existed beneath Yufu Volcano and that the andesitic magma of Yufu Volcano was formed by mixing of the two magmas. The trace-element compositions of melts in equilibrium with the pargasite and magnesio-hornblende, estimated by applying the partition coefficients calculated from major-element compositions of amphibole to trace-element compositions of amphiboles, indicate magma derived from slab melt and the partial melting of crustal material, respectively. Because magma is a mixture of minerals and melt, we estimate the chemical compositional ranges of the two end-member magmas on the Y versus SiO2 diagram from the mixing relationship between amphibole and estimated melt, as well as phenocrysts of plagioclase, clinopyroxene, and orthopyroxene. The overlap of the estimated compositional range with the trend of whole-rock composition represents the chemical compositions of the end-members of magma mixing, yielding estimates of the mafic (SiO2 ≈ 45 wt %) and felsic (SiO2 ≈ 68 wt %) end-member magmas. Furthermore, we estimate the concentrations of other elements in the end-member magmas by substituting the estimated SiO2 concentrations of the magmas into linear regression equations between the whole-rock contents of other elements and SiO2. The trace-element compositions of the mafic and felsic end-member magmas, as estimated in this study, have similar features to those of gabbroids and Cretaceous granitic rocks, respectively, that are presumed to lie beneath Yufu Volcano. The Ora Ignimbrite (~275 Ma) is a crystal-rich (~40%), heterogeneous, supereruption-sized (~1300 km3) rhyolite in northern Italy and the final eruptive product of the Athesian Volcanic Group (289–274 Ma), the largest Permian volcanic district in Europe. Two key outcrops, an intracaldera vitrophyre and an outflow vitrophyre, contain well-preserved, glass-bearing juvenile material. We investigate at what scale heterogeneities existed in the Ora magmatic system by studying the geochemical and petrological characteristics of crystal-rich (20–50%) and crystal-poor (<20%) fiamme from the Ora vitrophyres, allowing us to reconstruct critical aspects of Ora's magmatic architecture and pre-eruptive history and granting us further insight into the storage and dynamic processes that occur in large, crystal-rich, silicic systems. Textural analysis of fiamme reveals four types: the intracaldera vitrophyre has very coarse-grained crystal-rich (VCCR) and fine-grained crystal-poor (I-FCP) fiamme, while the outflow vitrophyre has coarse-grained crystal-rich (CCR) and fine-grained crystal-poor (O-FCP) fiamme. The diversity of crystal-poor (I-FCP & O-FCP) fiamme glass trace-element compositions suggests that multiple small crystal-poor magma bodies were dispersed throughout the Ora magmatic system. Compositionally and texturally distinct glass types in single O-FCP fiamme preserve evidence of variable degrees of magma mixing and record different mingling to eruption timescales, revealing that the Ora magmatic system experienced multiple silicic recharge events. In the crystal-rich (VCCR & CCR) fiamme, high crystal contents (VCCR: 40–50%; CCR: 20–40%), large crystals (max grain size: VCCR: 4–10 mm; CCR: 3–4 mm), and interlocking growth textures suggest that these fiamme contain parcels of disaggregated magma mush. High-silica rhyolite glass compositions (77.2–78.3 wt.% SiO2) and extremely depleted Sr (VCCR: <20; CCR: <5 ppm) and Ba (VCCR: <70; CCR: <20 ppm) glass trace-element concentrations indicate that the crystal-rich fiamme glasses represent highly fractionated melts. Crystal-rich fiamme glass trace-element compositions also form discrete, tightly clustered populations, suggesting that multiple crystal-rich, melt-dominated magma bodies existed prior to eruption. We propose that the coexistence of large-scale heterogeneity (e.g. deposit-scale and outcrop-scale) with small-scale homogeneity observed in crystal-rich fiamme is resolved by a model in which at least two separate magma reservoirs, each containing multiple melt-dominant magma bodies, erupted to form the Ora Ignimbrite. Subduction zone magmatism is a major control of volcanism, the generation of modern continental crust and the formation of economically important porphyry Cu–(Mo–Au) deposits. Reading the magmatic record of individual arc segments and constraining the rates of magmatic changes are critical in order to fully understand and quantify the processes that drive magma evolution in subduction settings during arc growth. This study focuses on the San Francisco Batholith and the Rio Blanco-Los Bronces porphyry deposit cluster in central Chile, which provides an igneous rock record over ~13.5 Myr of arc evolution. We use whole-rock geochemistry, zircon geochronology and Hf isotope geochemistry to track changes in the crustal magmatic system of this arc segment during crustal thickening and porphyry Cu deposit formation. By combining the analytical dataset with Monte Carlo fractional crystallisation and assimilation fractional crystallisation modelling, we test a model for significant crustal involvement during magma evolution. Systematic and continuous increases in Dy/Yb, La/Yb, V/Sc and Sr/Y in the magmas over time indicate a transition in the main fractionation assemblage from plagioclase-dominated to amphibole-dominated that reflects deeper crystallisation and/or a higher meltwater content. Concomitant decreases in εHf and Th/La as well as increasing Ba/Th are best explained by assimilation of progressively deeper crustal lithologies from low (Chilenia) to high Ba/Th (Cuyania) basement terranes. Our study highlights that an increasingly hydrous magma and a deepening locus of crustal magma differentiation and assimilation, driven by crustal thickening contemporaneous with increased tectonic convergence and ingression of the aseismic Juan Fernandez ridge, can account for all investigated aspects of the multi-Myr magmatic evolution leading up to the formation of the Rio Blanco-Los Bronces porphyry Cu deposits. Our findings corroborate the importance of high-pressure differentiation of hydrous magma for the formation of Andean-style porphyry deposits. Once magmas favourable for porphyry Cu mineralisation were generated in the lower crust, multiple episodes of efficient magma migration into the upper crust fed several, discrete, shallow magmatic-hydrothermal systems over ~3.5 Myr to form the world's largest known Cu resource at Rio Blanco-Los Bronces. Olivine from the dunite of the Guli pluton crystallized from olivine–melanephelinite magma at temperatures above 1260°C according to the melt inclusion study. The melts were enriched with volatile components (S, CO2, F, H2O, slightly Cl) and contained high amount of incompatible elements. In addition, olivine hosts sporadic inclusions of picrite-basalt composition, which are close to picrite–meimechite melts preserved in chromite from dunite according to literature data. This suggests the influx of picrite–meimechite melts and their mixing with melanephelinite magma during the formation of dunites in the magma chamber. Based on the indicator ratios of incompatible elements, these melts and melanephelinite magma had different sources, which were located in undepleted mantle at different depths and derived through different degree of partial melting. This paper presents a model of the formation of a multiphase Akzhailau granitoid massif formed within a Caledonian block of the Earth's crust in the Hercynian time. This work is based on the results of major and trace element composition, geochronological, mineralogical and isotope-geochemical studies. Three stages of the formation of the Akzhailau massif are distinguished, which differ significantly from the previously accepted concepts about the multicomplex and polychronous origin of this intrusion: (1) the formation of moderately alkaline A2-type leuсogranites (308–301 Ma); (2) intrusion of monzodiorites into the base of leucogranites (~295 Ma), increasing degree of partial melting of protoliths with the formation of syenites and moderately alkaline granites of I-type (294–292 Ma); (3) intrusion of dikes and small bodies of alkaline ferroeckermannite A1-type leucogranites in the west and north of massif (~289 Ma). The Akzhailau massif was formed within about 15 Myr in the middle–upper crust through the interaction of plume-related subalkaline basitic magmas with metamorphosed crustal protolith of the orogenic structure. The gravity and gradient anomalies contain valuable information about the underground geological structures at various depths. Deep and shallow buried source bodies are able to be identified through multi-scale field separation processes, and visual comprehensions of geological structures can be obtained via 3D density inversion techniques. In this study, we propose an improved 3D imaging strategy based on gravitational field separation using the preferential continuation filter. This strategy incorporates the relationship between spectral features and buried depths of source bodies, allowing for a one-step transformation from planar gravity and full-tensor gradient field observations to a 3D density structure in the wave-number domain. Synthetic tests validate the effectiveness and robustness of the gravity and gradient imaging approaches, highlighting their advantages in high vertical resolution and low computational requirements. Nonetheless, it should be noted that the imaging effects of horizontal gradients Γ x x and Γ y y are unsatisfactory due to their weak noise resistance. Thus, they are not suitable for real data applications. The other imaging approaches are further applied to recover the subsurface 3D density structure beneath the Weishan cone in Wudalianchi Volcanic Field, Northeastern China. Our results provide insights into the possible location and shape of the low-density magma chamber. Also, the potential presence of partial melts is inferred and supported from a gravity perspective. The primary advantage of these approaches is their ability to generate a reasonable geological model in scenarios with limited prior information and physical property constraints. The geochemical monitoring of volcanic activity today relies largely on remote sensing, but the combination of this approach together with soil gas monitoring, using the appropriate parameters, is still not widely used. The main purpose of this study was to correlate data from crater gas emissions with flank emissions of soil gases at Mt. Etna volcano from June 2006 to December 2020. Crater SO2 fluxes were measured from fixed stations around the volcano using the DOAS technique and applying a modeled clear-sky spectrum. The SO2/HCl ratio in the crater plume was measured with the OP-FTIR technique from a transportable instrument, using the sun as an IR source. Soil CO2 efflux coupled with the 220Rn/222Rn activity ratio in soil gases (named SGDI) were measured at a fixed monitoring site on the east flank of Etna. All signals acquired were subject both to spectral analysis and to filtering of the periodic signals discovered. All filtered signals revealed changes that were nicely correlated both with other geophysical signals and with volcanic eruptions during the study period. Time lags between parameters were explained in terms of different modes of magma migration and storage inside the volcano before eruptions. The Palaeocene granites of Dawei and the Eocene granites of Mawchi both host large‐ to medium‐scale Sn–W deposits and represent two metallogenically prominent segments of the SE Asian tin belt in Myanmar. Combined with previous geochemical data, new whole‐rock elemental and isotope analyses of tin‐mineralized granites were obtained to provide insights into sources involved in the formation of these granites. Tin granites in both regions are highly siliceous (76–80 wt%), peraluminous (A/CNK = 1.02–1.32), depleted in Sr, Ba, Zr and Ti but elevated in Li, Sn, Rb, Pb and U. The highly evolved nature of these granites is emphasized by their high Y/Ho (33–49) ratios as well as low Nb/Ta (1–11) and Zr/Hf (8–24) ratios. The chondrite‐normalized REE patterns, with M‐type tetrad effects (TE1,3 = 1.04–1.16) and strongly negative Eu anomalies (0.01–0.34), point to fractional crystallization of feldspars and other accessories during the evolution of the parental magma and are also indicative of the magmatic to hydrothermal transition that resulted in the pervasive mineralization of these bodies. The Pb isotopic compositions are variably enriched, with age‐corrected 206Pb/204Pb, 207Pb/204Pb and 208Pb/204Pb values ranging from 18.620 to 18.898, 15.728 to 15.770, and 38.288 to 39.402, respectively, all of which point to derivation from evolved crustal material. This is consistent with their low ɛNd(t) and ɛHf(t) values of −10.11 to −11.29, and −5.86 to −8.93, respectively. Collectively, these data suggest that crustal melting, fractional crystallization and late‐stage magma–fluid interactions all played important roles in the generation of the tin‐mineralized granites of Myanmar. This study provides new constraints on the causes of the chemical and isotopic variability in the central Victorian, Devonian, silicic, magmatic rocks and relates these to crustal architecture in the region. Synthesising present and previous work, it is concluded that the Selwyn Block, which forms the main source region for the Devonian silicic magmas (granitic and silicic volcanic rocks), is heterogeneous in three dimensions, on scales of 1 km and less. The sources of both the I- and S-type magmas were formed in Paleoproterozoic to Mesoproterozoic times, in the distal back-arc region of an Andean-type margin, in a basin that was extending and deepening eastward with time. The prominent rock types are high-grade metamorphosed greywackes, potassic andesites and dacites, with smaller volumes of pelitic rocks. The metasediment-dominated source rocks generally lie at deeper levels and reached higher metamorphic grades than the sources of the I-type magmas. This means that the I-type magmas were generally at lower temperatures and were also more hydrous than the S-type magmas. Heat for the metamorphism and partial melting of the source rocks of the silicic magmas was advected into the crust by mantle-derived magmas. These probably formed an underplate, to drive the regional metamorphism, but numerous, scattered, sill-like mafic bodies caused local contact anatexis and silicic magma production. Along with the emplacement of mafic magma bodies, the ascent of the silicic magmas to the upper crust rendered the deeper parts of the Selwyn Block denser and more mafic. The largely unexposed Selwyn Block, which forms the crustal basement in central Victoria, is heterogeneous in three dimensions, on scales of 1 km and less. The sources of the Devonian I- and S-type silicic magmas here formed in the Paleoproterozoic to Mesoproterozoic distal back-arc of an Andean-type margin. The metasedimentary S-type source rocks lie at deeper levels and reached higher metamorphic grades than the sources of the I-type magmas. The Devonian Rudniy intrusion is a composite magmatic body comprising two gabbroid units. Located in the Tsagaan-Shuvuut ridge in NW Mongolia, it is the only one known to contain disseminated sulfide Ni-Cu-PGE minerals out of numerous gabbroid intrusions surrounding the Tuva depression. The ore occurs as disseminated sulfide globules made of pyrrhotite, pentlandite, chalcopyrite, and cubanite, confined to a narrow troctolitic layer at the margins of a melanogabbro, at the contact with a previously emplaced leucogabbro. Globules generally display mantle-dominated sulfur isotopic signatures but show variable metallogenic and mineralogical characteristics, as well as notably different sizes and morphologies reflecting variable cooling and crystallization regimes in different parts of the intrusion. Sulfides from the chilled margin of the melanogabbro are surrounded and intergrown with volatile-rich (i.e., CO2-, H2O-, F-, and Cl) phases such as calcite, chlorite, mica, amphibole, and apatite. Based on the mineralogical and textural relationships of volatile-rich phases with sulfides, we argue that this assemblage represents the product of the crystallization of volatile-rich carbonate melt immiscible with both silicate and sulfide liquids. We put forward the hypothesis that volatile-rich carbonate melt envelops sulfide droplets facilitating their transport in magmatic conduits and that this process may be more widespread than commonly thought. The smaller sulfide globules, which are interpreted to derive from the breakup of larger globules during transport and emplacement, do not display an association with volatile-rich phases, suggesting that the original carbonate melt could have been detached from them during the evolution of the magmatic system. Variable rates of crystallization may have been responsible for the observed disparities in the mineralogical and metallogenic characteristics of different sulfide globules entrained in the Rudniy intrusion. Magma intrusion has an important influence on the physical and mechanical properties of coal and rock. In the area of magma intrusion, disasters such as gas outburst are prone to occur. Revealing its invasion law will be conducive to disaster management and energy development. For this purpose, changes in industrial analysis components of coal, mineral composition, major oxides, trace elements, and rare earth elements of coal under the thermal metamorphism of magma intrusion were analyzed. It is found that the moisture and volatile matter contents of the thermally affected coals in the mining face are generally lower than that of normal coals, while moisture and volatile matter contents are reduced towards to the magma intrusion contact. For example, the moisture and volatile matter of coal sample M01 decreased by 64.6% and 38.6% respectively compared with coal sample M05. During magma intrusion, some minerals remain on the surface of the coal body, resulting in changes in the mineral composition of the coal body. The decrease in carbon atom net spacing, the increase in crystallite aggregation and ductility, and aromaticity in thermally affected coals have a positive impact on the improvement of coal metamorphism. Due to the influences of magmatic intrusion, the variation rules of major oxides in coal are different, and the closer to the magmatic intrusion zone, the easier the major oxides are to be depleted. However, magma intrusion will not lead to the loss of all major oxides in thermally affected coals, such as content of CaO is 54.8%, which is higher than that of coal not affected by magmatic hydrothermal fluid. Most of the trace elements in the thermally affected coals of the No. 9 coal seam are depleted. The contents of rare earth elements are low on the whole coalbasis, with an average of 29.48 μg/g, and the distribution pattern towards to magmatic intrusion shows a wide and gentle "V" curve with left high and right low, showing the characteristics of enrichment of light rare earth elements. Magmatism in the Quaternary Clear Lake volcanic field (CLVF), with its youngest eruption having only occurred c. 10 ka ago, is commonly invoked as the heat source for the world's largest commercial geothermal reservoir, The Geysers, in northern California. A shallow silicic magma reservoir in the upper-middle crust has been discovered for some time, but the location and mechanism of a potential deep mafic magma reservoir have remained elusive. Here, we present a seismic tomographic model that images the entire crustal column, clearly revealing a multilevel transcrustal magmatic system beneath the Geysers-Clear Lake area. Upwelling melts from the mantle traverse across the crust-mantle boundary and accumulate in the lower crust underneath the southeastern part of Clear Lake, resulting in a hot Moho in between. Mafic melts primarily ascend westward due to the extensional regime in the west and physical barrier effect from the overlying rigid ophiolite fragment, ultimately forming a shallow silicic magma reservoir underlying and heating The Geysers geothermal field. In addition, this study also links compositionally diverse volcanism in a continental setting to differentiation in a multilevel transcrustal magmatic system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many examples of exposed giant dike swarms can be found where lateral magma flow has exceeded hundreds of kilometers. We show that massive magma flow into dikes can be established with only modest overpressure in a magma body if a large enough pathway opens at its boundary and gradual buildup of high tensile stress has occurred along the dike pathway prior to the onset of diking. This explains rapid initial magma flow rates, modeled up to about 7400 cubic meters per second into a dike ~15-kilometers long, which propagated under the town of Grindavík, Southwest Iceland, in November 2023. Such high flow rates provide insight into the formation of major dikes and imply a serious hazard potential for high-flow rate intrusions that propagate to the surface and transition into eruptions. 14°N on the Mid-Atlantic ridge (MAR) is one of only a few locations worldwide where volatile-saturated, geochemically enriched mid-ocean ridge basalts (E-MORBs) have been recovered. These basaltic glasses are so gas-rich that CO 2 -filled bubbles may "pop" when brought to the surface, due to the pressure and temperature change. Although these "popping rocks" have long been regarded as representative samples of un-degassed magmas sourced from the upper mantle, uncertainties regarding both their generation mechanism(s) and the potential effects of gas loss/accumulation processes have hampered unambiguous quantification of the upper mantle volatile element (water, carbon, nitrogen, noble gas) inventory. Fortunately, the extent and consequences of gas loss/accumulation processes can be tested by studying characteristic changes in volatile elements compositions, including 4He/40Ar* (where 40Ar* is 40Ar corrected for atmospheric contamination). To document the mechanism of popping rock generation and potential effects of degassing and gas accumulation processes on MORB volatile systematics, we present a comprehensive volatile characterization (carbon, nitrogen and noble gas systematics) of popping rocks and associated MORBs (n = 19) recently sampled at 14°N on the MAR, including 2 normal MORBs (N-MORB) from an oceanic core complex (OCC) and 17 E-MORBs. In line with previous studies, we find that PR exhibit the lowest 4He/40Ar* (1.08 ± 0.04) among all MORB samples, lower than the conventional mantle production ratio of 3 ± 1. Such low 4He/40Ar* could either (i) derive from accumulation of first-generated bubbles originating from open-system degassing of underlying magmas, or (ii) represent the actual upper mantle production ratio. We summarize the arguments in favor of each of these two scenarios (including the required accumulation times for radiogenic noble gases accumulation, the K/U and 232Th/238U of the upper mantle, popping rock vesicle size distributions, and physical considerations for vesicle growth and upwelling through a basaltic magma), and discuss their implications for the volatile composition of un-degassed magmas from the upper mantle. We find homogenous N isotope compositions (average δ15N of −4.49 ± 1.40 ‰ at 14°N) but variable δ13C (from −11 ‰ to −3.4 ‰), potentially compatible with the expectations for residual dissolved gas after Rayleigh fractionation. However, explaining the light δ13C signatures of PR via this process appears incompatible with any of the two scenarios proposed for explaining their low 4He/40Ar*, which would predict (i) 13C-enrichements and (ii) no fractionation relative to an initial composition at δ13C ∼ -5 ‰, respectively. After correction for solubility-controlled degassing fractionation and potential gas accumulation processes using 4He/40Ar* systematics, we find relatively homogeneous C/3He ((2.65 ± 0.51) × 109) but variable C/N (from 125 up to 4578), whose potential origins are discussed as part of a companion paper (Part B: Source effects). Hopf monads generalise Hopf algebras. They clarify several aspects of the theory of Hopf algebras and capture several related structures such as weak Hopf algebras and Hopf algebroids. However, important parts of Hopf algebra theory are not reached by Hopf monads, most noticeably Drinfeld's quasi-Hopf algebras. In this paper we introduce a generalisation of Hopf monads, that we call slack Hopf monads. This generalisation retains a clean theory and is flexible enough to encompass quasi-Hopf algebras as examples. A slack Hopf monad is a colax magma monad T on a magma category C such that the forgetful functor U T : C T → C 'slackly' preserves internal Homs. We give a number of different descriptions of slack Hopf monads, and study special cases such as slack Hopf monads on cartesian categories and k -linear exact slack Hopf monads on Vect k , that is comagma algebras such that a modified fusion operator is invertible. Petrographic, geochemical, and isotope–geochemical studies of the Mesoproterozoic volcanic association (lava flows and the Valaam sill) in the Ladoga graben in the suture zone of the Karelian craton and Svekofennian orogenic complex are conducted. Ferrobasites of close composition and geological position in lava flows and the sill have different Nd isotopic compositions, differing by 5 units of εNd(t): = –4...–5 in ferrobasalts of lava flows and a very low-radiogenic Nd isotopic composition in mafic rocks of the sill (εNd(t) to –11 for ferrogabbros), and identical to the isotopic composition of its acidic rocks (εNd(t) to –11 for granophyres). It is shown that in the crust, which is heterogeneous in age, the process of fractional crystallization along the tholeiitic trend combined with assimilation of melts from wall rocks of magma chambers could have been an effective mechanism for forming such "paradoxical" features of the Nd isotopic composition. The isotopic composition of sill rocks indicates the likely occurrence of Mesoarchean blocks in the lower crust of the Ladoga graben region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The large magma reservoirs underlying world-class porphyry deposits are one of the key factors in their formation, which thus led to the present study focusing on the unmineralized intrusive rocks underlying the porphyry molybdenum-copper orebody of the post-collisional Jiama porphyry-skarn copper-polymetallic deposit in southern Tibet. The Jiama porphyry intrusion comprises intermediate-silica quartz diorite, monzogranite, and granodiorite porphyries, as well a high-silica granite porphyry. The intrusive rocks suite exhibits similar whole-rock Sr-Nd isotopic compositions [εNd(t) = -3.9 to -0.8], suggesting a common, non-radiogenic magma source. Yet, these rocks have distinct geochemical characteristics. The intermediate-silica rocks are relatively enriched in Ba and Sr with minor Eu anomalies, and show adakite-like geochemical characteristics. In contrast, the high-silica granite porphyry is strongly depleted in Ba, Sr, and Eu, and lacks adakite-like geochemical characteristics. We propose that the high-silica granite porphyry represents highly fractionated melt extracted from a silicic mush reservoir (crystallinity of ∼40%-65%), and that the monzogranite and granodiorite porphyries constitute the complementary residual silicic cumulates. High crystallinity facilitates the formation of connected fluid pathways, allowing the efficient removal of volatiles from the remaining silicic melt and a rapid flux of the ore-forming fluids toward the apical parts of the large magma reservoir. Less-evolved mafic melt is believed to have repeatedly intruded the base of the magma reservoir, thereby releasing volatiles and water into the silicic mush systems. The volatiles migrated upward through the fluid channels and accumulated in the apical part of the magma reservoir, subsequently, as a result of the overpressure in the roof zone, ore-forming fluids and successive batches of magma were expelled together, thereby forming the Jiama porphyry-skarn deposit. The crustal thickening process is the key to understanding global tectonic evolution and climatic patterns. The Sr/Y, (La/Yb)N ratios of granitoids can be used to quantitatively estimate crustal thickness and reconstruct the crustal thickening process. We present the geochemical characteristics, petrogenesis, and geodynamic implications of Eocene dioritic enclaves (monzodiorite), host granitoid rocks (monzonite), and granite dikes of southern Tibet to reveal the crustal thickening process underway during the collision of India and Asia. The Quxu dioritic enclaves were produced by magma mixing and represent mafic end member. The adakitic host rocks were generated by partial melting of lower crust with normal thickness. The high Sr/Y, (La/Yb)N ratios of the Quxu host rocks were inherited from their magma source region. The ∼40% fractional crystallization of amphibole from magma resembling Quxu host rocks formed the Quxu granite dikes. The continuous crustal thickening history determined by the locally weighted regression analysis shows that the crustal thickness of the Lhasa terrane during 50-45 Ma was no more than 36-46 km, and the crust thickened quickly during the syn-collisional period. A- and I-type magmas are commonly associated with rare earth element (REE) and gold (Au) mineralization. However, the behavior and solubility of the REEs and gold within the A- and I-type magmas and their synchronous magmatism remain unclear. This study focused on the synchronous Early Cretaceous A- and I-type magmatism that formed alkaline and granodioritic complexes within the Luxi and Jiaobei terranes of the central-eastern North China Block, terranes that contain the third largest known REE deposit in China and the third largest gold province in the world. Our integrated whole-rock geochemical and Nd isotopic data and zircon Hf-O isotopic data provide new insights into the petrogenesis of these contemporaneous A- and I-type magmas and their role in the generation of the REE and gold mineralization in this area. The alkaline magmas that formed the intrusions in the Luxi terrane had A- and I-type affinities, were oxidized, were fluorine-, sulfur-, and copper-rich, were H2Opoor, and were generated by low-pressure partial melting of a source region containing enriched lithospheric mantle material and minor amounts of Paleoproterozoic A-type granitic crust. In comparison, the granodioritic magmas within the Jiaobei terrane had I-type affinities, were relatively reduced, were sulfur-rich, contained low concentrations of Cu, were hydrous, and were formed by high-pressure partial melting of a source region containing enriched mantle material and large volumes of Archean to Paleoproterozoic crustal material. The A- and I-type magmas within the Luxi terrane also have higher high field strength element (HFSE; e.g., Th, Nb, Ta) and total light rare earth element (ΣLREE) concentrations as well as higher ΣLREE/total heavy rare earth element (ΣHREE) ratios than the I-type magmas enriched in large ion lithophile elements (LILEs; e.g., Ba, Sr) in the Jiaobei terrane. These characteristics suggest that the diversity of REE and gold mineralization was the result of interaction between the lithospheric mantle and hybrid sediment-derived melts and aqueous fluids under rutile-bearing eclogite-facies (>2.0 GPa) conditions within the Luxi terrane and with aqueous fluids under amphibolite- to eclogite-facies (>1.5 GPa) conditions within the Jiaobei terrane. Our study strongly suggests that the interaction between the lithospheric mantle and sediment-derived melts, the presence of coexisting REE- and fluorine-rich magmas, and low-pressure partial melting were all crucial factors in the formation of A-type intrusion-related REE deposits, whereas high-pressure partial melting and contemporaneous sulfur and chalcophile element enrichment were critical processes in the formation of I-type intrusions prospective for gold mineralization. The Messejana–Plasencia great dyke (MPGD) is a Late Triassic tholeiitic gabbro intrusion related to the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province. Its large outcrop extent (~530 km), combined with its prolongation below the Duero basin (additional 100 km), makes it one of the world's largest dykes known. We have studied felsic granophyric bodies appearing in its northernmost segment at different scales, from mm-sized (interstitial micrographic pockets) to felsic dykes of up to 10 m thick and 1.5 km long, intruding within the gabbros. Significant differences exist in the mineral and whole-rock composition of gabbros and granophyres, including the Sr–Nd isotopic ratios. The chemical variation in the gabbros is coherent with fractionation of olivine, clinopyroxene and plagioclase at depth. However, the presence of a compositional gap between gabbros and granophyres (absence of intermediate compositions) and the formation of these late-stage intergranular felsic melts within the gabbro mesostasis suggest that they could be derived by liquid immiscibility. The Sr–Nd isotopic heterogeneity in the MPGD gabbros and the presence of zircons with Variscan ages (~286 Ma), inherited from granulitic rocks, indicate that the mafic magmas experienced some degree of lower crust assimilation during fractionation close to the Moho depth. On the contrary, the scarce xenocrystic Variscan zircon crystals found in a granophyric dyke within the MPGD gabbro display similar textures and ages (~299 Ma) to those of the country rock granites and point to contamination at a different crustal level. Near the Segura pluton, hyper-differentiated magmas enriched in F, P, and Li migrated through shallowly dipping fractures, which were sub-perpendicular to the schistosity of the host Neoproterozoic to Lower Cambrian metasedimentary series, to form two swarms of low-plunging aplite–pegmatite dykes. The high enrichment factors for the fluxing elements (F, P, and Li) compared with peraluminous granites are of the order of 1.5 to 5 and are a consequence of the extraction of low-viscosity magma from the crystallising melt. With magmatic differentiation, increased P and Li activity yielded the crystallisation of the primary amblygonite–montebrasite series and Fe-Mn phosphates. The high activity of sodium during the formation of the albite–topaz assemblage in pegmatites led to the replacement of the primary phosphates by lacroixite. The influx of external, post-magmatic, and Ca-Sr-rich hydrothermal fluids replaced the initial Li-Na phosphates with phosphates of the goyazite–crandallite series and was followed by apatite formation. The Xiangho Zng district is the largest low-temperature W-Au-Sb metallogenic area in the world. The Darongxi skarn W deposit in the north of the Xiangzhong district is closely related to biotite monzonite granite, muscovite monzonite granite, and felsophyre, but the nature of granitic magma and its relationship with mineralization is relatively weak. In this paper, U-Pb dating, Lu-Hf isotope, the in situ composition of zircon, and the apatite of biotite monzonite granite, muscovite monzonite granite, and felsophyre in the Darongxi mining area are systematically studied, and the formation age, magma property and source, and their relationship with mineralization are discussed. The values of zircon U-Pb age and the εHf(t) of biotite monzonite granite are 222.2 ± 0.54 Ma and −2.9~−6.4, respectively. The values of zircon U-Pb age and the εHf(t) of muscovite monzonite granite are 220.8 ± 0.58 Ma and −2.7 to −8.1, respectively. The values of zircon U-Pb age and the εHf(t) of felsophyre are 222.3 ± 2.20 Ma and −2.2~−5.4, respectively. Magmatic apatite grains from biotite monzonite granite and muscovite monzonite granite show distinctive core–rim and oscillatory zoning textures in CL images, and demonstrate a bright yellow in colorful CL images. The magmatic apatite has a total rare earth concentration (3766~4627 ppm), exhibiting right-inclined nomorlized rare earth element patterns and obvious negative Eu anomalies. The geochemical data of magmatic zircon and apatite indicate that magma sources are responsible for these intrusions in the Darongxi mining area, mainly derived from the partial melting of the Mesoproterozoic crust, which is rich in W; the magma is rich in F and poor in Cl (F = 2.4~3.3 wt%, Cl = 0.0024~0.0502 wt%). The oxygen fugacity of magmatic zircon (ΔFMQAVG = −4.02~−0.26), the high negative Eu anomaly (δEu = 0.06~0.12) and the low positive Ce anomaly (δCe = 1.09~1.13) of magmatic apatite, and the occurrence of ilmenite all indicate that the redox condition of magma from the Darongxi mining area is reduced. The reduced F-rich crust-source granitic rock and W-rich source provide favorable conditions for the mineralization of the Darongxi reduced skarn W deposit. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
