A./0000-0003-4004-3008; Horhat, Florin George/0000-0001-6133-0204 WOS: 000522628200013 PubMed: 31676155 Background: We report the results of International Nosocomial Infection Control Consortium (INICC) surveillance study from January 2012 to December 2017 in 523 intensive care units (ICUs) in 45 countries from Latin America, Europe, Eastern Mediterranean, Southeast Asia, and Western Pacific. Methods: During the 6-year study period, prospective data from 532,483 ICU patients hospitalized in 242 hospitals, for an aggregate of 2,197,304 patient days, were collected through the INICC Surveillance Online System (ISOS). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-National Healthcare Safety Network (CDC-NHSN) definitions for device-associated health care-associated infection (DA-HAI) were applied. Results: Although device use in INICC ICUs was similar to that reported from CDC-NHSN ICUs, DA-HAI rates were higher in the INICC ICUs: in the medical-surgical ICUs, the pooled central line-associated bloodstream infection rate was higher (5.05 vs 0.8 per 1,000 central line-days); the ventilator-associated pneumonia rate was also higher (14.1 vs 0.9 per 1,000 ventilator-days,), as well as the rate of catheter-associated urinary tract infection (5.1 vs 1.7 per 1,000 catheter-days). From blood cultures samples, frequencies of resistance, such as of Pseudomonas aeruginosa to piperacillin-tazobactam (33.0% vs 18.3%), were also higher. Conclusions: Despite a significant trend toward the reduction in INICC ICUs, DA-HAI rates are still much higher compared with CDC-NHSN's ICUs representing the developed world. It is INICC's main goal to provide basic and cost-effective resources, through the INICC Surveillance Online System to tackle the burden of DA-HAIs effectively. Abstract

A self-powered glucose biosensor (SPGB) was developed based on biofuel cells (BFCs)and a microfluidic system as a suitable technology for high potential application in clinical diagnosis. In this work, a bioanode and biocathode were assembled by glucose oxidase-based and laccase-based electrodes, respectively, which were incorporated into a microfluidic system (m-SPGB), while the anolyte and catholyte were phosphate buffered at different pH values of 7.4 and 5.6, respectively. The m-SPGB showed a linear dynamic interval of 0–10 mM (R2 = 0.9907), a low limit of detection of 0.48 mM and a response to interfering species. Subsequently, human blood was used in the anolyte to quantify glucose molecules in real samples, obtaining a low relative error percentage when compared with a commercial glucometer. The coupling of the m-SPGB with a wireless electronic device allowed the detection and processing of the signal in the quantification of glucose directly without using a potentiostat/galvanostat. The promising results of the m-SPGB connected to a Wi-Fi electronic device are well suited for clinical application.

Methods: During the 6-year study period, using Centers for Disease Control and Prevention National Healthcare Safety Network (CDC-NHSN) definitions for device-associated health care-associated infection (DAHAI), we collected prospective data from861,284 patients hospitalized in INICC hospital ICUs for an aggregate of 3,506,562 days. Results: Although device use in INICC ICUs was similar to that reported from CDC-NHSN ICUs, DA-HAI rates were higher in the INICC ICUs: in the INICC medical-surgical ICUs, the pooled rate of central lineassociated bloodstream infection, 4.1 per 1,000 central line-days, was nearly 5-fold higher than the 0.8 per 1,000 central line-days reported from comparable US ICUs, the overall rate of ventilator-associated pneumonia was also higher, 13.1 versus 0.9 per 1,000 ventilator-days, as was the rate of catheterassociated urinary tract infection, 5.07 versus 1.7 per 1,000 catheter-days. From blood cultures samples, frequencies of resistance of Pseudomonas isolates to amikacin (29.87% vs 10%) and to imipenem (44.3% vs 26.1%), and of Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates to ceftazidime (73.2% vs 28.8%) and to imipenem (43.27% vs 12.8%) were also higher in the INICC ICUs compared with CDC-NHSN ICUs. Conclusions: Although DA-HAIs in INICC ICU patients continue to be higher than the rates reported in CDC-NSHN ICUs representing the developed world, we have observed a significant trend toward the reduction of DA-HAI rates in INICC ICUs as shown in each international report. Abstract

The EVASYON Study Group., [Background & aim]: A diet quality index (DQI) is a tool that provides an overall score of an individual's dietary intake when assessing compliance with food-based dietary guidelines. A number of DQIs have emerged, albeit their associations with health-related outcomes are debated. The aim of the present study was to assess whether adherence to dietary intervention, and the overall quality of the diet, can predict body composition changes., [Methods]: To this purpose, overweight/obese adolescents (n = 117, aged: 13–16 years; 51 males, 66 females) were recruited into a multi-component (diet, physical activity and psychological support) family-based group treatment programme. We measured the adolescents' compliance and body composition at baseline and after 2 months (intensive phase) and 13 months (extensive phase) of follow-up. Also, at baseline, after 6 months, and at the end of follow-up we calculated the DQI., [Results]: Global compliance with the dietary intervention was 37.4% during the intensive phase, and 14.3% during the extensive phase. Physical activity compliance was 94.1% at 2-months and 34.7% at 13months and psychological support compliance were growing over the intervention period (10.3% intensive phase and 45.3% during extensive phase). Adolescents complying with the meal frequency criteria at the end of the extensive phase had greater reductions in FMI z-scores than those did not complying (Cohen's d = 0.53). A statistically significant association was observed with the diet quality index. DQI-A variation explained 98.1% of BMI z-score changes and 95.1% of FMI changes., [Conclusions]: We conclude that assessment of changes in diet quality could be a useful tool in predicting body composition changes in obese adolescents involved in a diet and physical activity intervention programme backed-up by psychological and family support., The study was supported by the Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality via the Carlos III Institute of Health (FIS Grant PI051080, PI051579). "El lago de Tochac en el estado de Hidalgo, es un cuerpo de agua que por su extensión y por su flora acuática presente se considera como un relicto importante del gran sistema de lagos que antigua mente existían en la Cuenca de México. Sin embargo, durante las últimas décadas diversos factores entre los que sobresalen las actividades antropogénicas, han promovido en el lago cambios significativos en la morfología, la profundidad, la calidad del agua, la cantidad de nutrimentos en los sedimentos y la distribución de las hidrófitas. El presente estudio se condujo con el propósito de evaluar la acumulación de fósforo total y fósforo extractable en sedimentos con ausencia y presencia de hidrófitas de la zona litoral durante el periodo de secas. Los resultados obtenidos muestran que los contenidos de fósforo en los sedimentos con presencia de hidrófitas tienen diferencias significativas con aquellos sedimentos en los que la vegetación acuática está ausente, lo que permite suponer que la presencia de hidrófitas al aportar materia orgánica fácilmente biodegradable, contribuye a la acumulación del fósforo en los sedimentos."

6. Fitodepuración de ortofosfatos del agua del lago de los Reyes Aztecas, Tláhuac, Ciudad de México

"El Lago de los Reyes Aztecas y el sistema de canales de la zona chinampera ubicados en la Delegación Tláhuac de la Ciudad de México, reciben las descargas de las plantas de tratamiento de aguas residuales del Cerro de la Estrella, San Luis Tlaxialtemalco y San Lorenzo Tezonco, para mitigar las considerables oscilaciones del nivel de agua durante la época de estiaje. Sin embargo, la calidad del agua tratada y el desfogue de las viviendas que rodean al lago, han contribuido a elevar el nivel de los ortofosfatos en el lago y en los canales. El objetivo de este estudio fue estimar la eficiencia de remoción de ortofosfatos mediante la técnica de fitodepuración en un ambiente controlado. Las asociaciones de hidrófitas utilizadas fueron: Lemna gibba con Ceratophyllum dermesum, Berula erecta con Lemna gibba y Polygonum punctatum con Hydrocotyle ranunculoides. Se cuantificaron los ortofosfatos al inicio del experimento, a las 72 horas, al sexto día, décimo y décimo quinto día. Se estimó la eficiencia global de remoción para cada estación calculándose valores de 88% por lo que se demuestra que las hidrófitas fueron eficientes para mejorar la calidad del agua del Lago de los Reyes Aztecas."

Abstract

In this paper, Monte Carlo (MC) simulation has been used to study the swelling pattern of Na-montmorillonite (Na-Mnt), Mg-montmorillonite (Mg-Mnt), and Na/Mg-mixture montmorillonite (4NaMg-Mnt; 2Na2Mg-Mnt). The molecular simulation was performed in the NVT (number of molecules, volume and temperature are constant) ensemble at normal temperature (300 K) and 225, 300, and 340 bar over an H2O content 147, 196, and 294 mg g−1 of clay. The simulations reproduce the swelling pattern of Na-Mnt and Mg-Mnt. The predicted spacing of the Na/Mg-Mnt mixtures is closely related to that of Mg-Mnt and confirms the results reported in the literature for Na-rich/Mg-poor Mnt. The results of the water adsorption and the swelling properties on the system Na-Mnt, Mg-Mnt, and the Na/Mg-Mnt mixtures are reflected with a transformation to two-hydrate stages. 8. EFECTO DEL FOTOPERIODO EN LA REMOCIÓN DE PLOMO POR LEMNA GIBBA L. (LEMNACEAE)

Abstract

"El plomo llega a las aguas provenientes de las industrias de baterías, soldaduras, pinturas, etc. causando daños a los seres vivos, por lo que es necesario promover el desarrollo de tecnologías que ayuden a mejorar la calidad de los efluentes y que al mismo tiempo sean adecuadas al contexto socioeconómico del país. En este trabajo se plantea el uso de una angiosperma acuática, la especie Lemna gibba de la familia Lemnaceae que tiene un crecimiento exponencial y su cultivo es fácil en laboratorio. Para absorber el plomo (PbNO 3 ) 2 se prepararon cinco concentraciones, a nivel de bioensayo en el laboratorio y bajo el efecto de dos diferentes condiciones de fotoperiodo (luz continua y 12 h luz/12 h oscuridad) durante cuatro días, ya que a partir de este día libera el Pb al medio. Los resultados indican que en las dos concentraciones de Pb más bajas (30 y 50 mgl -1 ), el fotoperiodo 12/12 es más favorable para su absorción (9405 μ gl -1 más y 18,895 μ gl -1 más respectivamente) mien- tras que en las tres restantes (100, 200 y 300 mgl -1 ) lo fue la condición de luz continua. (6600 μ gl -1 , 1949 μ gl -1 , 5587 μ gl -1 más respectivamente). Los conocimientos que se derivan de este estudio, permiten optimizar el uso de L. gibba en el tratamiento terciario de aguas residuales."

Abstract

In this work the poling process of the NLO guest-host system consisting of poly(methyl metacrylate): PMMA, and disperse red 1, DR1, is investigated with the purpose of getting information about the poling process and then optimize it. Measurements of pyroelectric activity of the poled samples are employed to evaluate the efficiency of the process since its value is directly proportional to the electric polarisation in the sample. Here, the poling was performed using the corona triode with constant current allowing one to measure the sample voltage during charging and parameters such as the temperature, electric field and poling time were varied. It is also shown that the electric conduction and also the dielectric constant can be obtained from the potential build-up curves.
