1. Balancing modularity and solution space freedom: effects on organisational learning and sustainable innovation

Abstract

Many technology-intensive (TI) firms find it challenging to leverage customisation and achieve sustainable innovation. Although some firms use modularity to tackle this challenge, mixed effects on sustainable innovation have been reported. This study uses organisational learning and ambidexterity theory to provide insights into how TI firms can achieve ‘win-win’ situations where sustainable innovation is increased through customisation. First, we argue that customisation should be viewed two-dimensionally and identify both modularity and solution space freedom as important dimensions. We argue that modularity reflects knowledge specialisation and solution space freedom reflects knowledge variety. Both of these dimensions affect organisational learning and, in turn, sustainable innovation. Second, we argue that the relationship between customisation and organisational learning is affected by supplier characteristics, specifically supplier sophistication. Survey data from 166 managers were used to empirically test the conceptual model and hypotheses. Polynomial response surface analysis confirms that customising by balancing high degrees of both modularity and solution space freedom results in superior organisational learning. High levels of supplier sophistication do not strengthen these effects. Rather, our results show that combining high degrees of modularity with constrained solution spaces increases learning for TI firms working with less sophisticated suppliers. In addition, organisational learning fully mediates the effect of customisation on sustainable product and process innovation.

Abstract

As consumer interest in organic products continues to grow, brands are increasingly adding organic variants to their product lines. However, consumer evaluations of these actions are not straightforward and differ for brands with various associations or within different product contexts. Previous research has shown that products with credence attributes, such as organic products, are often judged by brand name and consumers’ existing brand associations. The current study adds to previous work on brand equity and brand associations by explicitly considering the context and characteristics of these branded organic products. First, a pretest determined the existing brands’ corporate social responsibility (CSR) and corporate ability (CA) associations. Next, an online experiment tested consumers’ perceptions of brand equity, consumers’ trust in the brands and consumers’ purchase intentions, which were analyzed using a fully parallel, multiple-mediator process model with the experimental conditions as independent variables. The results show that brand equity increases most when a brand associated with both CA and CSR introduces an organic product. In addition, consumers trust this brand more compared to brands that are less strongly associated with CSR. Moreover, the intention to purchase organic products increases as brand equity increases, but the intention to purchase organic products does not increase as trust increases. Based on these results, we conclude that brands aiming to increase their value to positively affect consumers’ purchase intentions of their organic products benefit most when they are highly associated with both CSR and CA.

3. Insights into factors that control gold mineralisation: numerical modelling of the western Hodgkinson Province, northeast Queensland, Australia

Abstract

Results of coupled mechanical and fluid flow modelling provide insights into some of the factors that controlled gold mineralisation and deformation in the Hodgkinson Province in northeastern Queensland, Australia. These results aid in resolving why many north-south to northwest-southeast trending, second-order fault zones throughout the Hodgkinson province are spatially associated with gold deposits. The simplified, regional-scale model geometry used in this study permitted variation of boundary conditions, material properties and stress regimes. This included variation of lithological properties, the absence of fault zones in some models, and the application of plane strain or transpression. The model outcomes illustrate the importance of a listric fault geometry for focusing deformation and fluid flow in zones of relatively high permeability and / or low rock strength. Also, the orientation of fault zones with respect to the dominant far-field compressive stress regime is shown to be a key factor controlling deformation and fluid flow. In addition, fault bends and terminations are shown to influence significantly the distribution of deformation and fluid flow in our models. Our results provide an improved understanding of first-order factors that may have controlled localisation of deformation and fluid flow in the regional geological architecture of the Hodgkinson Province. Focused fluid flow arising from localised dilation and permeability increase plays an important role in the formation of ore deposits, hence the outputs of our modelling may be of significant value for future exploration in the Hodgkinson Province, and analogous regions elsewhere. Moreover, our study illustrates the usefulness of numerical modelling as a tool for testing multiple scenarios, leading to improved conceptual understanding of geological systems.

Abstract

We present recent results obtained with the WA98 experiment at CERN SPS. The experiment consists of large acceptance hadron and photon spectrometers which allow to study many aspects of heavy ion collisions. We use event-by-event measurements of charged and neutral particle multiplicity to establish the limit on the prodution of Disoriented Chiral Condensates. We use the Plastic Ball detector together with a set of tracking chambers to study collective flow. The tracking chambers together with the excellent particle identification allow us to study the production of Δ ++ . The high resolution photon calorimeter array allows us to study inclusive photon and π 0 spectra and search for excess direct photons.

Abstract

The restoration of chiral symmetry and its subsequent breaking through a phase transition has been predicted to create regions of Disoriented Chiral Condensates (DCC). This phenomenon has been predicted to cause anomalous fluctuations in the relative production of charged and neutral pions in high-energy hadronic and nuclear collisions. The WA98 experiment has been used to measure charged and photon multiplicities in the central region of 158 AGeV Pb+Pb collisions at the CERN SPS. In a sample of 212646 events, no clear DCC signal can be distinguished. 7. The influence of lead selection on the correlation dimension for quantification of the chaotic attractor underlying polymorphic tachyarrhythmias

Abstract

Currently the correlation dimension is frequently used to quantify the non-linear properties of the electrocardiogram recorded in rest or during various tachyarrhythmias. In this study the influence of lead selection and embedding dimension on the correlation dimension was evaluated. In nine dogs presented with Torsade de Pointes tachyarrhythmias the correlation dimension was determined using the commonly applied method of Grassberger and Procaccis, for the embedding dimension 3, 4, 5 and 8. Between dogs the average correlation dimension varied from 1.37-2.12, 1.42-2.39, 1.45-2.63, and 1.55-3.03 respectively. Within dogs the difference between those two leads with the minimal and maximal dimension varied from 0.17-0.67, 0.19-0.95, 0.24-1.00 and 0.32-1.14. The study suggests that the correlation dimension should not be used to compare the non-linearity between patients but should be limited to longitudinal comparison in one patient.

Abstract

The authors have studied the production of hadrons and photons in the reaction Pb(Pb, X) at 158 A.GeV. They have applied the discrete wavelet transform to the photon and charged-particle correlations in order to obtain a set of father function coefficients. They try to explain the multiplicity fluctuations by means of localized disoriented chiral condensate domains. (7 refs). A detailed analysis of the phase space distributions of charged particles and photons have been carried out using two independent methods. The results indicate the presence of nonstatistical fluctuations in localized regions of phase space.

Abstract

Disoriented Chiral Condensates (DCC) have been predicted to form in high energy heavy ion collisions where the approximate chiral symmetry of QCD has been restored. This leads to large imbalances in the production of charged to neutral pions. Sophisticated analysis methods are being developed to disentangle DCC events out of the large background of events with conventionally produced particles. Abstract

First results from the WA98 experiment on 33 TeV 208 Pb ion reactions with various targets measured at the CERN SPS are presented. Data on transverse energy production and particle multiplicity are discussed. Special emphasis is laid on photon and neutral meson production.
