Search

We have frequency analyzed 6391 variables classified earlier as fundamental mode RR Lyrae (RR0) stars in the MACHO database on the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The overwhelming majority of these variables have been proved to be indeed RR0 stars, whereas the remaining ones have fallen in one of the following categories: single- and double-mode Cepheids, binaries, first overtone and double-mode RR Lyrae stars and non-classified variables. Special attention has been paid to the Blazhko stars. We found altogether 731 Blazhko variables showing either a doublet or an equidistant triplet pattern at the main pulsation component in their frequency spectra. The incidence rate of the Blazhko variables among the RR0 stars in the LMC is 11.9%, which is three times higher than their rate among the first overtone RR Lyrae stars. From the frequency spectra we found that variables with larger modulation amplitudes at the higher frequency side of the main pulsation component are three times more frequent than the ones showing the opposite amplitude pattern. A search made for a modulation component with the Blazhko period in the average brightness of the individual variables showed the existence of such a modulation with an overall amplitude of ~0.006 mag. On the other hand, a similar search for quadruple modulation patterns around the main pulsation component have failed to clearly detect such components at the ~0.004 mag level. This means that the amplitudes of the quadruple components should be, on the average, at least ten times smaller than those of the triplet components. We present the preliminary results of our astrometric study of stellar motions along the lines of sight of the Magellanic Clouds and the Galactic bulge. Using 5 years of MACHO project point-spread function photometry, we find that we can easily select stars with proper motions of 003 yr-1 from these very dense fields, using the characteristic shapes of their light curves. By performing astrometry on photometrically selected, candidate, high proper motion (HPM) stars in 50 deg2, we have discovered 154 new HPM stars from ~55 million stars monitored by the MACHO project. These new objects have proper motions as high as 05 yr-1, brightnesses ranging from V ~ 13 to V ~ 19, and V-R colors between 0.3 and 1.45.

We report on a search for long duration microlensing events towards the Large Magellanic Cloud. We find none, and therefore put limits on the contribution of high mass objects to the Galactic dark matter. At 95% confidence level we exclude objects in the mass range 0.3 solar masses to 30.0 solar masses from contributing more than 4 times 10^11 solar masses to the Galactic halo. Combined with earlier results, this means that objects with masses under 30 solar masses cannot make up the entire dark matter halo if the halo is of typical size. For a typical dark halo, objects with masses under 10 solar masses contribute less than 40% of the dark matter.

We present a ~ 5-yr optical light curve of the recurrent Be/X-ray transient A0538-66 obtained as a by-product of the MACHO Project. These data reveal both a long-term modulation at P = 420.8 +/- 0.8 d and a short-term modulation at 16.6510 +/- 0.0022 d which, within errors, confirms the previously found orbital period. Furthermore, the orbital activity is only seen at certain phases of the 421 d cycle suggesting that the long-term modulation is related to variations in the Be star envelope., 4 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Using the exceptional long-term monitoring capabilities of the MACHO project, we present here the optical history of LMC X-2 for a continuous 6-yr period. These data were used to investigate the previously claimed periodicities for this source of 8.15 h and 12.54 d : we find upper amplitude limits of 0.10 mag and 0.09 mag, respectively., 4 pages, 4 figures. Mean colors and magnitudes of RR Lyrae stars in 24 fields toward the Galactic bulge from the MACHO database are presented. Accurate mean reddenings are computed for these fields on the basis of the mean colors. The distribution along the line of sight of the RR Lyrae population is examined on the basis of the mean magnitudes, and it is shown that the bulk of the RR Lyrae population is not barred. Only the RR Lyrae stars in the inner fields closer to the Galactic center (l{lt}4{degree}, b{gt}{minus}4{degree}) show evidence for a bar. The red giant clump stars in the MACHO fields, however, clearly show a barred distribution, confirming the results of previous studies. Given the different spatial distribution, the RR Lyrae stars and the clump giants trace two different populations. The MACHO collaboration has recently analyzed 2.1 years of photometric data for about 8.5 million stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). This analysis has revealed 8 candidate microlensing events and a total microlensing optical depth of $\tau_{meas} = 2.9 +1.4/-0.9 \times 10^{-7}$. This significantly exceeds the number of events (1.1) and the microlensing optical depth predicted from known stellar populations: $\tau_{back} = 5.4\times 10^{-8}$, but it is consistent with models in which about half of the standard dark halo mass is composed of Machos of mass $\sim 0.5 \msun$. One of these 8 events appears to be a binary lensing event with a caustic crossing that is partially resolved which allows us to estimate the distance to the lenses. If the source star is not a short period binary star, then we show that the lens system is very likely to reside in the LMC. However, if we assume that the optical depth for LMC-LMC lensing is large enough to account for our entire lensing signal, then the binary event does not appear to be consistent with lensing of a single LMC source star by a binary residing in the LMC. The MACHO project has been monitoring about ten million stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud in the search for gravitational microlensing events caused by massive compact halo objects (Machos) in the halo of the Milky Way. The standard analysis for well sampled, long duration microlensing is sensitive to objects with masses 10 −5 ≲ m ≲ 1M ⊙ . However, a different analysis method sensitive to short duration events extends the sensitivity of the experiment to lower masses. Combining the results of the analyses of the first two years of data from the LMC shows that Machos with masses in the range 2.5 × 10 −7 m −2 M ⊙ cannot make up the entire mass of a standard spherical dark halo

The nature of dark matter remains mysterious, with luminous material accounting for at most approximately 25 per cent of the baryons in the Universe. We accordingly undertook a survey looking for the microlensing of stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) to determine the fraction of Galactic dark matter contained in massive compact halo objects (MACHOs). The presence of the dark matter would be revealed by gravitational lensing of the light from an LMC star as the foreground dark matter moves across the line of sight. The duration of the lensing event is the key observable parameter, but gives non-unique solutions when attempting to estimate the mass, distance and transverse velocity of the lens. The survey results to date indicate that between 8 and 50 per cent of the baryonic mass of the Galactic halo is in the form of MACHOs (ref. 3), but removing the degeneracy by identifying a lensing object would tighten the constraints on the mass in MACHOs. Here we report a direct image of a microlens, revealing it to be a nearby low-mass star in the disk of the Milky Way. This is consistent with the expected frequency of nearby stars acting as lenses, and demonstrates a direct determination of a lens mass from a microlensing event. Complete solutions such as this for halo microlensing events will probe directly the nature of the MACHOs.

Advances in information communications technology and related computational power are providing a wide array of systems and related services that form the basis of smart home technologies to support the health, safety and independence of older adults. While these technologies offer significant benefits to older people and their families, they are also transforming older adults into lead adopters of a new 24/7 lifestyle of being monitored, managed, and, at times, motivated, to maintain their health and wellness. To better understand older adult perceptions of smart home technologies and to inform future research a workshop and focus group was conducted with 30 leaders in aging advocacy and aging services from 10 northeastern states. Participants expressed support of technological advance along with a variety of concerns that included usability, reliability, trust, privacy, stigma, accessibility and affordability. Participants also observed that there is a virtual absence of a comprehensive market and policy environment to support either the consumer or the diffusion of these technologies. Implications for research, policy and market innovation are discussed.

We present optical spectroscopy and photometry of the LMC supersoft source (SSS) RX J0513.9-6951. Through the exceptional monitoring capabilities of the MACHO project, we show the optical history of this object for a≈3 year period. Recurring low states, in which the optical brightness drops by up to a magnitude, are observed at quasi-regular intervals. Analysis of the high state data reveals a small modulation with a semi-amplitude of ≈0.02 magnitudes at P=0d.76278±0d.00005. By considering all the available data, including optical photometry, spectroscopy and X-ray observations, we suggest a theoretical model to explain the fundamental variations exhibited by this source.

The LIGO interferometers are operating as gravitational wave observatories, with a noise level near an order of magnitude of the goal and the first scientific data recently taken. This data has been analyzed for four different categories of gravitational wave sources; millisecond bursts, inspiralling binary neutron stars, periodic waves from a known pulsar, and stochastic background. Research and development is also underway for the next generation LIGO detector, Advanced LIGO.

Data collected by the GEO 600 and LIGO interferometric gravitational wave detectors during their first observational science run were searched for continuous gravitational waves from the pulsar J1939+2134 at twice its rotation frequency. Two independent analysis methods were used and are demonstrated in this paper: a frequency domain method and a time domain method. Both achieve consistent null results, placing new upper limits on the strength of the pulsar’s gravitational wave emission. A model emission mechanism is used to interpret the limits as a constraint on the pulsar’s equatorial ellipticity.

For 17 days in August and September 2002, the LIGO and GEO interferometer gravitational wave detectors were operated in coincidence to produce their first data for scientific analysis. Although the detectors were still far from their design sensitivity levels, the data can be used to place better upper limits on the flux of gravitational waves incident on the earth than previous direct measurements. We present the analysis of between 50 and 100 hrs of coincident interferometric strain data used to search for and establish an upper limit on a stochastic background of gravitational radiation. These data come from the first LIGO science run, during which all three LIGO interferometers were operated over a 2-week period spanning August and September of 2002. The method of cross-correlating the outputs of two interferometers is used for analysis. We describe in detail practical signal processing issues that arise when working with real data, and we establish an observational upper limit on a f^{-3} power spectrum of gravitational waves. Our 90% confidence limit is Omega_0 h_{100}^2 < 23 in the frequency band 40 to 314 Hz, where h_{100} is the Hubble constant in units of 100 km/sec/Mpc and Omega_0 is the gravitational wave energy density per logarithmic frequency interval in units of the closure density. This limit is approximately 10^4 times better than the previous, broadband direct limit using interferometric detectors, and nearly 3 times better than the best narrow-band bar detector limit. As LIGO and other worldwide detectors improve in sensitivity and attain their design goals, the analysis procedures described here should lead to stochastic background sensitivity levels of astrophysical interest., 26 pages, 17 figures

We present 47 spectroscopically-confirmed quasars discovered behind the Magellanic Clouds identified via photometric variability in the MACHO database. Thirty-eight quasars lie behind the Large Magellanic Cloud and nine behind the Small Magellanic Cloud, more than tripling the number of quasars previously known in this region. The quasars cover the redshift interval 0.2 < z < 2.8 and apparent mean magnitudes 16.6 < V < 20.1. We discuss the details of quasar candidate selection based on time variability in the MACHO database and present results of spectroscopic follow-up observations. Our follow-up detection efficiency was 20%; the primary contaminants were emission-line Be stars in Magellanic Clouds. For the 47 quasars discovered behind the Magellanic Clouds plus an additional 12 objects previously identified in this region, we present 7.5-year MACHO V- and R-band lightcurves with average sampling times of 2-10 days., 26 pages, 9 figures. We report the discovery of eight new R Coronae Borealis (RCB) stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) using the MACHO project photometry database. The discovery of these new stars increases the number of known RCB stars in the LMC to thirteen. We have also discovered four stars similar to the Galactic variable DY Per. These stars decline much more slowly and are cooler than the RCB stars. The absolute luminosities of the Galactic RCB stars are unknown since there is no direct measurement of the distance to any Galactic RCB star. Hence, the importance of the LMC RCB stars. We find a much larger range of absolute magnitudes (M(V) = -2.5 to -5 mag) than inferred from the small pre-MACHO sample of LMC RCB stars. It is likely that there is a temperature - M(V)relationship with the cooler stars being intrinsically fainter. Cool (~5000 K) RCB stars are much more common than previously thought based on the Galactic RCB star sample. Using the fairly complete sample of RCB stars discovered in the MACHO fields, we have estimated the likely number of RCB stars in the Galaxy to be ~3,200. The MACHO collaboration has analyzed 5.7years of photometry on approximately 11.7 million stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) in a search for gravitational microlensing events. Two sets of cuts were used in the event selection process, and 13 and 17 events were found in the different sets. If the lenses are in the Galactic halo, then likelihood analysis for a standard halo model gives a halo mass fraction of about 0.2 with a 95% confidence interval of 0.08–0.5 and lens masses in the range 0.15–0.9 M⊙.

We present an analysis of the longest timescale microlensing events discovered by the MACHO Collaboration during a 7 year survey of the Galactic bulge. We find 6 events that exhibit very strong microlensing parallax signals due, in part, to accurate photometric data from the GMAN and MPS collaborations. The microlensing parallax fit parameters are used in a likelihood analysis, which is able to estimate the distance and masses of the lens objects based upon a standard model of the Galactic velocity distribution. This analysis indicates that the most likely masses of 5 of the 6 lenses are > 1 Msun, which suggests that a substantial fraction of the Galactic lenses may be massive stellar remnants. This could explain the observed excess of long timescale microlensing events. The lenses for events MACHO-96-BLG-5 and MACHO-98-BLG-6 are the most massive, with mass estimates of M/Msun = 6 +10/-3 and M/Msun = 6 +7/-3, respectively. The observed upper limits on the absolute brightness of main sequence stars for these lenses are < 1 Lsun, so both lenses are black hole candidates. The black hole interpretation is also favored by a likelihood analysis with a Bayesian prior using a conventional model for the lens mass function. We consider the possibility that the source stars for some of these 6 events may lie in the foreground or background of the Galactic bulge, but we find that this is unlikely. Future HST observations of these events can either confirm the black hole lens hypothesis or detect the lens stars and provide a direct measurement of their masses. Future observations of similar events by SIM or the Keck or VLTI interferometers will allow direct measurements of the lens masses for stellar remnant lenses as well., 47 pages, with 26 included postscript figures. We present a 9 million star color-magnitude diagram (9M CMD) of the LMC bar. The 9M CMD reveals a complex superposition of different age and metallicity stellar populations, with important stellar evolutionary phases occurring over 3 orders of magnitude in number density. First, we count the non-variable supergiants, the associated Cepheids, and measure the effective temperatures defining the instability strip. Lifetime predictions of stellar evolution theory are tested, with implications for the origin of low-luminosity Cepheids. The highly-evolved AGB stars have a bimodal distribution in brightness, which we interpret as discrete old populations (>1 Gyr). The faint AGB may be metal-poor and very old. We identify the clusters NGC 411 and M3 as templates for the admixture of old stellar populations. However, there are indications that the old and metal-poor field population has a red HB morphology: the RR Lyraes lie on the red edge of the instability strip, the AGB-bump is very red, and the ratio of AGB-bump stars to RR Lyraes is quite large. If the HB second parameter is age, the old and metal-poor field population likely formed after the oldest clusters. Lifetime predictions of stellar evolution theory lead us to associate a significant fraction of the red HB clump giants with the same old and metal-poor population producing the RR Lyraes and the AGB-bump. In this case, compared to the age-dependent luminosity predictions of stellar evolution theory, the red HB clump is too bright relative to the RR Lyraes and AGB-bump. Last, the surface density profile of RR Lyraes is fit by an exponential, favoring a disk-like rather than spheroidal distribution. We have detected 90 objects with periods and light-curve structures similar to those of field δ Scuti stars using the Massive Compact Halo Object (MACHO) Project database of Galactic bulge photometry. If we assume similar extinction values for all candidates and absolute magnitudes similar to those of other field high-amplitude δ Scuti stars (HADS), the majority of these objects lie in or near the Galactic bulge. At least two of these objects are likely foreground δ Scuti stars, one of which may be an evolved nonradial pulsator, similar to other evolved, disk-population δ Scuti stars. We have analyzed the light curves of these objects and find that they are similar to the light curves of field δ Scuti stars and the δ Scuti stars found by the Optical Gravitational Lens Experiment (OGLE). However, the amplitude distribution of these sources lies between those of low- and high-amplitude δ Scuti stars, which suggests that they may be an intermediate population. We have found nine double-mode HADS with frequency ratios ranging from 0.75 to 0.79, four probable double- and multiple-mode objects, and another four objects with marginal detections of secondary modes. The low frequencies (5-14 cycles day-1) and the observed period ratios of ~0.77 suggest that the majority of these objects are evolved stars pulsating in fundamental or first overtone radial modes.

The MACHO Project is a microlensing survey that monitors the brightnesses of 60 million stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), Small Magellanic Cloud, and Galactic bulge. Our database presently contains about 80 billion photometric measurements, a significant fraction of all astronomical photometry. We describe the calibration of MACHO two-color photometry and transformation to the standard Kron-Cousins V and R system. Calibrated MACHO photometry may be properly compared with all other observations on the Kron-Cousins standard system, enhancing the astrophysical value of these data. For 9 million stars in the LMC bar, independent photometric measurements of 20,000 stars with V < 18 mag in field-overlap regions demonstrate an internal precision sigV = 0.021, sigR = 0.019, and sig(V-R) = 0.028 mag. The accuracy of the zero-point in this calibration is estimated to be +-0.035 mag for stars with colors in the range -0.1 < (V-R) < 1.2 mag. A comparison of calibrated MACHO photometry with published photometric sequences and new Hubble Space Telescope observations shows agreement. The current calibration zero-point uncertainty for the remainder of the MACHO photometry database is estimated to be +- 0.10 mag in V or R and +-0.04 mag in (V-R). MACHO Project photometry of 45 LMC FO/SO beat Cepheids which pulsate in the first and second overtone (FO and SOo, respectively) has been analysed to determine the lightcurve characteristics for the SO mode of Cepheid pulsation. We predict that singly-periodic SO Cepheids will have nearly sinusoidal lightcurves; that we will only be able to discern SO Cepheids from fundamental (F) and (FO) Cepheids for P, 23 pages, 7 Encapsulated PostScript figures. The MACHO experiment is searching for dark matter in the halo of the Galaxy by monitoring more than 50 million stars in the LMC, SMC, and Galactic bulge for gravitational microlensing events. The hardware consists of a 50 inch telescope, a two-color 32 megapixel ccd camera and a network of computers. On clear nights the system generates up to 8 GB of raw data and 1 GB of reduced data. The computer system is responsible for all realtime control tasks, for data reduction, and for storing all data associated with each observation in a database. The subject of this paper is the software system that handles these functions. It is an integrated system controlled by Petri nets that consists of multiple processes communicating via mailboxes and a bulletin board. The system is highly automated, readily extensive, and incorporates flexible error recovery capabilities. It is implemented with C++ in a Unix environment.

We present analysis of MACHO Alert 95-30, a dramatic gravitational microlensing event towards the Galactic bulge whose peak magnification departs significantly from the standard point-source microlensing model. Alert 95-30 was observed in real-time by the Global Microlensing Alert Network (GMAN), which obtained densely sampled photometric and spectroscopic data throughout the event. We interpret the light-curve ``fine structure'' as indicating transit of the lens across the extended face of the source star. This signifies resolution of a star several kpc distant. We find a lens angular impact parameter theta_{min}/theta_{source} = 0.715 +/- 0.003. This information, along with the radius and distance of the source, provides an additional constraint on the lensing system. Spectroscopic and photometric data indicate the source is an M4 III star of radius 61 +/- 12 Rsun, located on the far side of the bulge at 9 kpc. We derive a lens angular velocity, relative to the source, of 21.5 +/- 4.9 km/s/kpc, where the error is dominated by uncertainty in the source radius. Likelihood analysis yields a median lens mass of 0.67{+2.53}{-0.46} Msun, located with 80% probability in the Galactic bulge at a distance of 6.93{+1.56}{-2.25} kpc. If the lens is a main-sequence star, we can include constraints on the lens luminosity. This modifies our estimates to M_lens = 0.53{+0.52}{-0.35} Msun and D_lens = 6.57{+0.99}{-2.25} kpc. Spectra taken during the event show that the absorption line equivalent widths of H alpha and the TiO bands near 6700 A vary, as predicted for microlensing of an extended source. This is most likely due to center-to-limb variation in the stellar spectral lines. The MACHO microlensing experiment’s time-sampled photometry database contains blue and red lightcurves for nearly 9 million stars in the central bar region of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We have identified known LMC Planetary Nebulae (PN) in the database and find one, Jacoby 5, to be variable. We additionally present data on the “parent populations” of LMC PN, and discuss the star formation history of the LMC bar.

We present optical photometry of the eclipsing supersoft source, CAL87. These observations comprise long term data accumulated as a by-product of the MACHO Project, and high speed white light photometry of a single eclipse. We (i) derive an improved ephemeris of To = HJD 2450111.5144(3) + 0.44267714(6)E for the time of minimum light, (ii) find the eclipse structure to be stable over a period of 4 years, and (iii) investigate the colour variation as a function of orbital phase. The resolution afforded by the high speed nature of the white light observations enables us to see new structure in the light curve morphology., Comment: 6 pages Latex, 5 figures, to appear in MNRAS

We describe the search for δ Scuti stars in the MACHO database of bulge fields. Concentrating on a sample of high amplitude δ Scutis, we examine the light curves and pulsation modes. We also discuss their spatial distribution and evolutionary status using mean colors and absolute magnitudes.

We identify the likely optical counterpart to the LMC supersoft X-ray source RXJ0527.8-6954, and hence recover HV2554. This identification is based on an analysis of approximately 4 years of optical photometry obtained serendipitously via the MACHO project. We see a steady fading of the star of about 0.5 mag over the duration of the observations. Evidence is also presented for an orbital modulation of 0.05 mag semi-amplitude on a period of P=0.39262 +/- 00015 d. Our optical observations are consistent with the suggestion that the X-ray decline in this system is caused by cooling after a weak shell flash., Comment: 4 pages Latex, 4 figures, to appear in MNRAS

The MACHO project has been monitoring about ten million stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud in the search for gravitational microlensing events caused by massive compact halo objects (Machos) in the halo of the Milky Way. In our standard analysis, we have searched this data set for well sampled, long duration microlensing lightcurves, detected several microlensing events consistent with Machos in the 0.1 < m < 1.0 M_sun mass range, and set limits on the abundance of objects with masses 1e-5 < m < 0.1 M_sun. In this paper, we present a different type of analysis involving the search for very short time scale brightenings of stars which is used to set strong limits on the abundance of lower mass Machos. Our analysis of the first two years of data toward the LMC indicates that Machos with masses in the range 2.5e-7 < m < 5.2e-4 M_sun cannot make up the entire mass of a standard spherical dark halo. Combining these results with those from the standard analysis, we find that the halo dark matter may not be comprised of objects with masses 2.5e-7 < m < 8.1e-2 M_sun., Submitted to ApJ, 4/28/96

The MACHO Project is searching for galactic dark matter in the form of massive compact halo objects (Machos). Millions of stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), and Galactic bulge are photometrically monitored in an attempt to detect rare gravitational microlensing events caused by otherwise invisible Machos. Analysis of two years of photometry on 8.5 million stars in the LMC reveals 8 candidate microlensing events, far more than the $\sim1$ event expected from lensing by low-mass stars in known galactic populations. From these eight events we estimate the optical depth towards the LMC from events with $2 < \that < 200$ days to be $��_2^{200} \approx 2.9 ^{+1.4}_{-0.9} \ten{-7}$. This exceeds the optical depth of $0.5\ten{-7}$ expected from known stars and is to be compared with an optical depth of $4.7\ten{-7}$ predicted for a ``standard'' halo composed entirely of Machos. The total mass in this lensing population is $\approx 2^{+1.2}_{-0.7} \ten{11} \msun$ (within 50 kpc from the Galactic center). Real-time detection of microlensing has moved from proof of concept in 1994 (Udalski et al. 1994a, Alcock et al.1994) to a steady stream of events this year. Global dissemination of these events by the MACHO and OGLE collaborations has made possible intensive photometric and spectroscopic follow up from widely dispersed sites confirming the microlensing hypothesis (Benetti 1995). Improved photometry and increased temporal resolution from follow up observations greatly increases the possibility of detecting deviations from the standard point-source, point-lens, inertial motion microlensing model. These deviations are crucial in understanding individual lensing systems by breaking the degeneracy between lens mass, position and velocity. We report here on GMAN (Global Microlensing Alert Network), the coordinated follow up of MACHO alerts.

We consider simultaneous optical data obtained during the recent X-ray turn-off of CAL83. Combining the optical behaviour with the observed X-ray decay time, we show that a model of cessation of steady nuclear burning is viable if the white dwarf is massive. We report the detection of 45 candidate microlensing events in fields toward the Galactic bulge. These come from the analysis of 24 fields containing 12.6 million stars observed for 190 days in 1993. Many of these events are of extremely high signal to noise and are remarkable examples of gravitational microlensing. The distribution of peak magnifications is shown to be consistent with the microlensing interpretation of these events. Using a sub-sample of 1.3 million ``Clump Giant" stars whose distance and detection efficiency are well known, we find 13 events and estimate the microlensing optical depth toward the Galactic Bulge as $\tau_{\rm bulge} = 3.9 {+ 1.8 \atop - 1.2} \times 10^{-6}$ averaged over an area of $\sim 12$ square degrees centered at Galactic coordinates $\ell = 2.55^\circ$ and $b = -3.64^\circ$. This is similar to the value reported by the OGLE collaboration, and is marginally higher than current theoretical models for $\tau_{\rm bulge}$. The optical depth is also seen to increase significantly for decreasing $\vert b\vert$. We present the first detection of parallax effects in a gravitational microlensing event. Parallax in a gravitational microlensing event observed only from the Earth appears as a distortion of the lightcurve due to the motion of the Earth around the Sun. This distortion can be detected if the event duration is not much less than a year and if the projected velocity of the lens is not much larger than the orbital velocity of the Earth about the Sun. The event presented here has a duration of 220 days and clearly shows the distortion due to the Earth's motion. We find that the projected velocity of the lens is 75+/-5 km/s at an angle of 28+/-4 deg from the direction of increasing galactic longitude, as expected for a lens in the galactic disk. A likelihood analysis yields estimates of the distance to and mass of the lens: D_{lens} = 1.7 (+1.1/-0.7) kpc and M = 1.3 (+1.3/-0.6) Msun, suggesting that the lens is a remnant such as a white dwarf or neutron star. A less likely possibility is that the lens is a main sequence star. If so, we can add our upper limit on the observed flux from the lens to the analysis. In the past few years, the Magellanic Clouds have been the targets for several major variable star surveys. The results of these surveys are now becoming available and it is clear that a Renaissance in LMC and SMC variable star research will result. In this review, I will describe the results of such surveys and review the questions that are likely to be answered by further work. We have monitored 8.6 million stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud for 1.1 years and have found 3 events consistent with gravitational microlensing. We place strong constraints on the Galactic halo content in the form of compact lensing objects in the mass range $10^{-4} \msun$ to $10^{-1} \msun$. Three events is fewer than expected for a standard spherical halo of objects in this mass range, but appears to exceed the number expected from known Galactic populations. Fitting a naive spherical halo model to our data yields a MACHO fraction $f = 0.20^{+0.33}_{-0.14}$, which implies a total MACHO mass (inside 50 kpc) of $8.0^{+14}_{-6}\ten{10} \msun$, and a microlensing optical depth $9^{+15}_{-7} \ten{-8}$ ($\sim 68$\% CL)., Comment: 8 pages, uuencoded compressed PostScript, 4 figures included (400kB). Gravitational microlensing is the most straightforward interpretation of the stellar brightenings that have been observed by our team and other experiments. These data have provided some of the most stringent limits to date on the nature of the Galaxy’s dark matter halo. The number of events seen towards the LMC indicate that our Galaxy is not surrounded by a “standard” halo of MACHOs in the mass range of 10−6 to 0.3 solar masses. The observed optical depth towards the Galactic Center is an important constraint on the distribution of mass in the plane of the Galaxy.

The MACHO project carries out regular photometric monitoring of millions of stars in the Magellanic Clouds and Galactic Bulge, to search for very rare gravitational microlensing events due to compact objects in the galactic halo and disk. A preliminary analysis of one field in the Galactic Bulge, containing {$\sim430,000$} stars observed for 190 days, reveals four stars which show clear evidence for brightenings which are time-symmetric, achromatic in our two passbands, and have shapes consistent with gravitational microlensing. This is significantly higher than the $\sim 1$ event expected from microlensing by known stars in the disk. If all four events are due to microlensing, a 95\% confidence lower limit on the optical depth towards our bulge field is $1.3 \times 10^{-6}$, and a ``best fit" value is $\tau \approx 1.6 \times 10^{-6}/\epsilon$,where $\epsilon$ is the detection efficiency of the experiment, and $\epsilon < 0.4$. We provide a status report on our search for dark matter in our Galaxy in the form of massive compact halo objects (MACHOs), using gravitational microlensing of background stars. This search uses a very large CCD camera on the dedicated 1.27m telescope at Mt.~Stromlo, Australia, and has been taking data for 2 years. At present, we have analysed data for 8 million stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud over 1 year, resulting in one strong candidate event and two lower-amplitude candidates. We have developed an astronomical imaging system tailored to our search for gravitational microlensing by compact objects in the halo and disk of the Galaxy. The challenge of detecting rare microlensing events is to monitor ∼10 million stars per night and distinguish genuine events from other sources of variability. The Large Magellanic Cloud and the Galactic bulge provide the high surface density of resolvable stars necessary for this task. A dedicated 50 inch telescope at Mt. Stromlo Observatory has been producing science data since the fall of 1992. Our system incorporates eight 2048 x 2048 CCDs into two focal planes for simultaneous imaging in two passbands (4500-6300 and 6300-8100 A). Each focal plane consists of four ‘edge-buttable’ CCDs in a custom mounted 2 x 2 array. The 0.62 arcsecond pixel scale (15 μ) yields a 40 x 40 arcminute square field of view in each frame. A sophisticated point spread fitting photometry package extracts up to 600,000 useful magnitudes per color per frame. The data collection rate we need is obtained by simultaneously reading out all sixteen CCD outputs (two per chip) at 34 KHz with 16 bit digitization. With exposure times of 150-300 seconds and a 70 second readout time we can collect up to 100 fields per night. These rates are designed to allow us to detect or rule out massive compact halo objects (MACHOs) in the 10-6 - 10 1 M⊙range.

We present the preliminary results of a frequency analysis of 1457 fundamental mode RR Lyrae (RR0) stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) from MACHO Project photometry. We find the same classes of pulsational behavior as were found in our earlier survey of first overtone RR Lyrae (RR1) stars. Variables whose prewhitened power spectra contain one or two peaks close to the main frequency component in the original power spectra are commonly known as Blazhko-type variables. The present analysis shows the overall frequency of Blazhko-type stars in the total RR0 population analysed to date to be ≈ 10%. This is lower than the often cited Galactic field/globular rate of 20-30% (Szeidl, 1988).The incidence rate of Blazhko-type variability in the LMC appears to be about three times higher in RR0 stars than in RR1 stars. This puts important constraints on possible models of the Blazhko effect.

There is now abundant evidence for the presence of large quantities of unseen matter surrounding normal galaxies, including our own$^{1,2}$. The nature of this `dark matter' is unknown, except that it cannot be made of normal stars, dust, or gas, as they would be easily detected. Exotic particles such as axions, massive neutrinos or other weakly interacting massive particles (collectively known as WIMPs) have been proposed)$^{3,4}$, but have yet to be detected. A less exotic alternative is normal matter in the form of bodies with masses ranging from that of a large planet to a few $ \msun$. Such objects, known collectively as massive compact halo objects$^5$ (MACHOs) might be brown dwarfs or `Jupiters' (bodies too small to produce their own energy by fusion), neutron stars, old white dwarfs, or black holes. Paczynski$^6$ suggested that MACHOs might act as gravitational microlenses, occasionally causing the apparent brightness of distant background stars temporarily to increase. We are conducting a microlensing experiment to determine whether the dark matter halo of our galaxy is made up of MACHOs. Here we report a candidate for a microlensing event, detected by monitoring the light curves of 1.8 million stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud for one year. The light curve shows no variation for most of the year of data taking, and an upward excursion lasting over 1 month, with a maximum increase of $\approx \bf 2$ mag. The MACHO microlensing experiment's time-sampled photometry database contains blue and red lightcurves for nearly 9 million stars in the central bar region of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We have identified known LMC Planetary Nebulae (PN) in the database and find one, Jacoby 5, to be variable. We additionally present data on the “parent populations” of LMC PN, and discuss the star formation history of the LMC bar.

We report the discovery of two new R Coronae Borealis (RCB) stars in the LMC using the MACHO project photometry database. The identification of both stars has been confirmed spectroscopically. One is a cool RCB star ({ital T}{sub eff}{approximately}5000 K), characterized by very strong Swan bands of C{sub 2} and violet bands of CN, and weak or absent Balmer lines, G band, and {sup 12}C{sup 13}C bands. The second star is an example of a hot RCB star, of which only three were previously known to exist in the Galaxy and none in the LMC. Its spectrum is characterized by several CII lines in emission. Both stars have shown deep declines of {Delta}{ital V}{ge}4 mag in brightness. The new stars are significantly fainter at maximum light than the three previously known LMC RCB stars. The amount of reddening toward these stars is somewhat uncertain, but both seem to have absolute magnitudes, {ital M}{sub {ital V}}, {approximately}0.5 mag fainter than the other three stars. Estimates of {ital M}{sub bol} find that the hot RCB star lies in the range of the other three stars, while the cool RCB star is fainter. The two cool LMC RCB stars are the faintest atmore » {ital M}{sub bol}. DNA sequence information underpins genetic research, enabling discoveries of important biological or medical benefit. Sequencing projects have traditionally used long (400-800 base pair) reads, but the existence of reference sequences for the human and many other genomes makes it possible to develop new, fast approaches to re-sequencing, whereby shorter reads are compared to a reference to identify intraspecies genetic variation. Here we report an approach that generates several billion bases of accurate nucleotide sequence per experiment at low cost. Single molecules of DNA are attached to a flat surface, amplified in situ and used as templates for synthetic sequencing with fluorescent reversible terminator deoxyribonucleotides. Images of the surface are analysed to generate high-quality sequence. We demonstrate application of this approach to human genome sequencing on flow-sorted X chromosomes and then scale the approach to determine the genome sequence of a male Yoruba from Ibadan, Nigeria. We build an accurate consensus sequence from >30x average depth of paired 35-base reads. We characterize four million single-nucleotide polymorphisms and four hundred thousand structural variants, many of which were previously unknown. Our approach is effective for accurate, rapid and economical whole-genome re-sequencing and many other biomedical applications.
