Turbulent phenomena are among the most striking effects that both classical and quantum fluids can exhibit. While classical turbulence is ubiquitous in nature, the observation of quantum turbulence requires the precise manipulation of quantum fluids such as superfluid helium or atomic Bose-Einstein condensates. In this work we demonstrate the turbulent dynamics of a 2D quantum fluid of exciton-polaritons, hybrid light-matter quasiparticles, both by measuring the kinetic energy spectrum and showing the onset of vortex clustering. We demonstrate that the formation of clusters of quantum vortices is triggered by the increase of the incompressible kinetic energy per vortex, showing the tendency of the vortex-gas towards highly excited configurations despite the dissipative nature of our system. These results lay the basis for the investigations of quantum turbulence in two-dimensional fluids of light.

In contrast to software simulations of neural networks, hardware implementations have often limited or no tunability. While such networks promise great improvements in terms of speed and energy efficiency, their performance is limited by the difficulty to apply efficient training. We propose and realize experimentally an optical system where highly efficient backpropagation training can be applied through an array of highly nonlinear, non-tunable nodes. The system includes exciton-polariton nodes realizing nonlinear activation functions. We demonstrate a high classification accuracy in the MNIST handwritten digit benchmark in a single hidden layer system.

We demonstrate that time-delayed nonlinear effects in exciton-polaritons can be used to construct neural networks where information is coded in optical pulses arriving consecutively on the sample. The highly nonlinear effects are induced by time-dependent interactions with the excitonic reservoir. These nonlinearities allow to create a nonlinear XOR logic gate that can perform operations on the picosecond timescale. An optoelectronic neural network based on the constructed logic gate performs classification of spoken digits with a high accuracy rate.

We investigate the spin polarization of localized exciton-polariton condensates. We demonstrate the presence of an effective magnetic field leading to the formation of elliptically polarized condensates. We show that this synthetic field has an entirely photonic origin, which we believe is unique for the CdTe-based microcavities. Moreover, the degree of spin polarization of localized polariton condensates in samples with magnetic ions depends on the excitation power or polarization of the non-resonant excitation laser. In an external magnetic field, the semimagnetic condensate spontaneously builds up strong spin polarization. Based on the magnetic field behavior of the condensate in the presence of magnetic ions, we apply a model that allows us to estimate the polariton-polariton interaction strength in a CdTe-system to approx. 0.8 $\mu \text{eV}\!\cdot\!\mu \text{m}^2$.

Purpose To assess the expression of selected cytokines in penile lichen sclerosus (PLS) and associate them with the occurrence of micro-incontinence (MI) in different stages of PLS. Methods The skin biopsies from 49 PLS affected, and 13 from nonlesional foreskins (healthy control adult males undergoing circumcision due to phimosis caused by short frenulum) were obtained. All specimens were used for RNA extraction and RT-qPCR. Quantitative assessment of the gene expression of interleukin 1-A (IL-1A), interleukin 1-B (IL-1B), interleukin 1 receptor antagonist (IL-1RN), interleukin 6 (IL-6), transforming growth factor β1 (TGF-β1), and interferon-gamma (INF-γ) was performed. To determinate the presence of MI, the patients were asked about voiding patterns, especially leaking tiny drops of urine from the urethral meatus after urination. Results IL-1A, IL-6, and INF-γ mRNA levels were approximately 150, 16, and 59 times higher in PLS than in control samples, respectively. The highest IL-1A mRNA levels were observed in early PLS (n = 13), INF-γ in moderate PLS (n = 32), while IL-6 in severe PLS (n = 4). MI was noted in 45 PLS patients vs. 0 in control (p Conclusion Occlusion and irritating urine effect are associated with the clinical progression of penile LS with increased mRNA expression of IL-1A, INF-γ, and IL-6 pro-inflammatory cytokines in the foreskin.

Participation of anti-inflammatory interleukin-13 (IL-13) in the process of carcinogenesis was well studied. Angiogenesis plays a key role in the process of tumour growth and metastasis. Higher expression of angiogenin (ANG) have been proven in many types of cancers. The aim of the study was to more fully understand the significance of plasma IL-13 as an immunomodulator and ANG as a stimulator of the angiogenesis process in patients with bladder cancer (BC) and to investigate the relationship between parameters. These parameters were examined in the group of BC patients and in subgroups of BC depending on clinical stage: non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC), muscle invasive bladder cancer (MIBC), histopathologic malignancy low grade (LG), high grade (HG) and in primary and recurrent BC. The level of IL-13 and ANG in the plasma of BC patients and controls were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. All calculations were done using the STATISTICA 13.3 (TIBCO software Inc.). Plasma levels of IL-13 and ANG were significantly higher in BC patients and in all patient subgroups examined than in the controls (p0.001). A negative significant correlation was found between ANG and IL-13 levels in BC-patients. Based on the receiver operating characteristic curves (ROC), IL-13 had good diagnostic value in BC. The presented results may suggest a relationship between angiogenesis and inflammation in the pathogenesis of bladder cancer and the development of this disease. With the increase of IL-13 level in BC-patients plasma, the ANG level decreased.

This paper presents an initial verification of the influence of a cooling- -lubrication liquid or its lack on the geometric surface structure of machine components undergoing the process of machining. It has been proposed to use the degree of isotropy of the finish surfaces, apart from commonly used roughness parameters, for the evaluation of changes in the quality of components machined in different cooling and lubrication conditions. In this study, the usefulness of the degree of isotropy for a description of the surface geometric structure characteristics has been verified.

We analyze datacubes of over 60 emission lines in the HH 32 stellar jet acquired with the Keck Cosmic Web Imager (KCWI). The data cover the less-explored blue portion of the spectrum between 3586A and 6351A , and have both high spectral (R $\sim$ 10000) and spatial ($\lesssim$ 1" ) resolution. The study includes all three major ionization states of oxygen, three Balmer lines, multiple lines of Fe II and Fe III, as well as the first datacubes ever acquired for important unblended diagnostic lines such as He II $\lambda$4686, Ca I $\lambda$3933, and Mg I] $\lambda$4571. The data cubes generally sort according to excitation, and have a relatively continuous progression from the highest-excitation ions (He II, O III) through the intermediate-excitation ions (O I and H I) to the lowest-excitation ions (Ca II and Mg I). Merging the KCWI cubes with HST images leads to several new insights about the flow, including evidence for bow shocks, partial bow shocks, spur shocks, Mach disks, jet deflection shocks, a wiggling jet, and potential shock precursors. The most surprising result is that one of the velocity components of Fe II in the Mach disk suddenly increases in flux relative to other lines by a factor of two, implying that the Mach disk vaporizes dust in the jet. Hence, jets must accelerate or entrain dust to speeds of over 300 km/s without destroying the grains.

In work, the modelling of a three-dimensional temperature field during surface modification of AlZn5.5MgCu aluminum alloy using GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding) technology is presented. GTAW is widely used for making welded joints using additional material (filler material). In the analyzed process, no additional material was used, and the effect of heat treatment was obtained by directly applying the electric arc to the surface of the material. The calculations were performed using Finite Element Method. The Goldak’s double ellipsoidal heat source model has been used in modelling. The thermal-mechanical properties of the material were assumed to depend on the temperature. The Workbench, DesignModeler, Mechanical, Fluent and CFD-Post modules of the ANSYS program were used for numerical simulations. In the description of the geometry of element heat treated, cube type elements were used, with density of grid in the heat affected zone. The temperature distributions in cross-sections of heated element as well as welding thermal cycles at selected points were analyzed. The results of numerical simulations were verified experimentally. Comparison of calculated and obtained in the experiment the fusion lines showed satisfactory compatibility.

We report on the design and performance of the Keck Cosmic Web Imager (KCWI), a general purpose optical integral field spectrograph that has been installed at the Nasmyth port of the 10 m Keck II telescope on Mauna Kea, HI. The novel design provides blue-optimized seeing-limited imaging from 350-560 nm with configurable spectral resolution from 1000 - 20000 in a field of view up to 20"x33". Selectable volume phase holographic (VPH) gratings and high performance dielectric, multilayer silver and enhanced aluminum coatings provide end-to-end peak efficiency in excess of 45% while accommodating the future addition of a red channel that will extend wavelength coverage to 1 micron. KCWI takes full advantage of the excellent seeing and dark sky above Mauna Kea with an available nod-and-shuffle observing mode. The instrument is optimized for observations of faint, diffuse objects such as the intergalactic medium or cosmic web. In this paper, a detailed description of the instrument design is provided with measured performance results from the laboratory test program and ten nights of on-sky commissioning during the spring of 2017. The thermal-mechanical properties of the material were assumed to depend on the temperature. The Workbench, DesignModeler, Mechanical, Fluent and CFD-Post modules of the ANSYS program were used for numerical simulations. In the description of the geometry of joints, cube type elements were used, with density of grid in the heat affected zone. The parabolic shapes of face and root were assumed based on the literature and results of the experiment. The temperature distributions in cross-sections of welded joints as well as welding thermal cycles at selected points were analyzed. The results of numerical simulations were verified experimentally. Comparison of calculated and obtained in the experiment the characteristic limits of heat affected zones showed satisfactory compatibility. The directions of heat propagation determined by vectors of cooling rates coincide with the longitudinal axis of dendritic grains determined on the basis of metallographic tests.

It is important to have accurate knowledge of the range of cancers associated with various CHEK2 mutations, and of the lifetime risks of cancer associated with each. We wished to establish the relationship between family history, mutation type and cancer risk in families with a CHEK2 mutation. We obtained a blood sample and pedigree information from 2012 unselected women with breast cancer, from 2007 men with prostate cancer and from 1934 patients with colon cancer, from hospitals throughout Poland. Genetic testing was carried out for four founder CHEK2 mutations on all 5953 specimens and 533 carriers were identified. We estimated the risk to age 75 for any cancer in the 2544 first-degree relatives to be 22.3%. After adjusting for mutation type, the risk of breast cancer was much higher among relatives of probands with breast cancer than among relatives of patients with prostate or colon cancer (HR=3.6; 95% CI=2.1-6.2; P=0.0001). Similarly, the risk of prostate cancer was higher among relatives of probands with prostate cancer than among relatives of patients with breast or colon cancer (HR=4.4; 95% CI=2.2-8.7; P=0.0001) and the risk of colon cancer was higher among relatives of probands with colon cancer than among relatives of patients with prostate or breast cancer (HR=4.2; 95% CI=2.4-7.8; P=0.0001). These analyses suggest that the risk of cancer in a carrier of a CHEK2 mutation is dependent on the family history of cancer.

Common molecular changes in cancer cells are high carbon flux through the glycolytic pathway and overexpression of fatty acid synthase, a key lipogenic enzyme. Since glycerol 3-phosphate dehydrogenase creates a link between carbohydrates and the lipid metabolism, we have investigated the activity of glycerol 3-phosphate dehydrogenase and various lipogenic enzymes in human bladder cancer. The data presented in this paper indicate that glycerol 3-phosphate dehydrogenase activity in human bladder cancer is significantly higher compared to adjacent non-neoplastic tissue, serving as normal control bladder tissue. Increased glycerol 3-phosphate dehydrogenase activity is accompanied by increased enzyme activity, either directly (fatty acid synthase) or indirectly (through ATP-citrate lyase, glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase, 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase and citrate synthase) involved in fatty acid synthesis. Coordinated upregulation of glycerol 3-phosphate dehydrogenase and lipogenic enzymes activities in human bladder cancer suggests that glycerol 3-phosphate dehydrogenase supplies glycerol 3-phosphate for lipid biosynthesis.

We are reporting the case of a parapubic hernia that occurred after radical prostatectomy. This kind of the hernia is caused by the weakening of the attachments of rectus muscles to the pubic bone. Because of its location, it may be misdiagnosed as a far more common direct inguinal hernia. A laparoscopic approach made it possible to precisely diagnose and repair the defect in the abdominal wall.

FIREBall (Faint Intergalactic Redshifted Emission Balloon) had a successful first engineering flight in July of 2007 from Palestine, Texas. Here we detail the design and construction of the spectrograph. FIREBall consists of a 1m telescope coupled to a fiber-fed ultraviolet spectrograph flown on a short duration balloon. The spectrograph is designed to map hydrogen and metal line emission from the intergalactic medium at several redshifts below z=1, exploiting a small window in atmospheric oxygen absorption at balloon altitudes. The instrument is a wide-field IFU fed by almost 400 fibers. The Offner mount spectrograph is designed to be sensitive in the 195-215nm window accessible at our altitudes of 35-40km. We are able to observe Lyα, as well as OVI and CIV doublets, from 0.3 < z < 0.9. Observations of UV bright B stars and background measurements allow characterization of throughput for the entire system and will inform future flights.

We present laparoscopic method of treatment of parapubic hernia that may occur after radical prostatectomy performed due to prostatic cancer. This kind of hernia is closely related to the weakening of the rectus muscle of abdomen insertions to the pubic bone that takes place during the operations using lower midline incision in order to reach organs in the small pelvis. Because of its localization it may be misdiagnosed as a commoner direct inquinal hernia. In this case the traditional anterior approach would not be curative. Using laparoscopy as it is suggested by authors will make the proper diagnosis much more easy and thus will enable effective treatment of the patient.

The atrial septal aneurysm (ASA) is a morphologic abnormality known to cause peripheral and pulmonary embolism. 28-52% patients with ASA have embolic events. However ASA -- with no other concomittant cardiac patology has rarely been reported as the indication for open heart surgery. In this work, five cases of patients operated for ASA are presented. Embolic complications with cerebral symptoms were presented in three cases. The diagnosis of ASA was established with the use of transesophageal echocardiography. The surgical correction of the defect was performed in extracorporeal circulation. The aneurysmal part of interatrial septum was excised and replaced with a pericardial patch. The postoperative course was uneventful. The patients have no new embolic events during the follow up period of one year.

Five patients were operated on because of ruptured aneurysm of the sinus of Valsalva. In the cases with no concomitant VSD the surgical access from the aorta was used. The aorta was opened and the Fogarty catheter was introduced to the fistula. The "wind sock" of the aneurysm was pulled back to the aorta and excised. The opening was closed with double-line pledgetted polypropylene sutures. In severe aortic incompetence mechanical prostheses were implanted. One patient had bacterial endocarditis with reopening of the fistula and aortic valve incompetence that required reoperation. All patients are in a good clinical state. We recommend the use of Dacron patches even in small aneurysms to avoid re-opening of the fistula.

Measurements of the complex permittivity of clay‐sand slurry containing fine‐milled mineral particles suspended in water carried out at 9.4 GHz show a marked dependence on both temperature and moisture content. The character of these relations is similar to that obtained for pure water. Permittivity and specific gravity of a slurry in the range interesting for technical activity are little affected by its chemical composition. On the basis of measurements carried out for five kinds of technological slurries a simple model for quick analysis of their properties is presented. The model consists of two separate layers: water and dry mineral inclusions, the thickness of which is proportional to the volume content in the suspension. Resultant permittivity of the biphase water suspension is equal to the sum of square roots from permittivities of both constituents, multiplied by their volume filling factors. Experimental results agree with those calculated from such simple formula within accuracy of measurement ...
