Abstract

Experiments on ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) in 2021 and 2022 have addressed a number of critical issues for ITER and EU DEMO. A major objective of the AUG programme is to shed light on the underlying physics of confinement, stability, and plasma exhaust in order to allow reliable extrapolation of results obtained on present day machines to these reactor-grade devices. Concerning pedestal physics, the mitigation of edge localised modes (ELMs) using resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs) was found to be consistent with a reduction of the linear peeling-ballooning stability threshold due to the helical deformation of the plasma. Conversely, ELM suppression by RMPs is ascribed to an increased pedestal transport that keeps the plasma away from this boundary. Candidates for this increased transport are locally enhanced turbulence and a locked magnetic island in the pedestal. The enhanced D-alpha (EDA) and quasi-continuous exhaust (QCE) regimes have been established as promising ELM-free scenarios. Here, the pressure gradient at the foot of the H-mode pedestal is reduced by a quasi-coherent mode, consistent with violation of the high-n ballooning mode stability limit there. This is suggestive that the EDA and QCE regimes have a common underlying physics origin. In the area of transport physics, full radius models for both L- and H-modes have been developed. These models predict energy confinement in AUG better than the commonly used global scaling laws, representing a large step towards the goal of predictive capability. A new momentum transport analysis framework has been developed that provides access to the intrinsic torque in the plasma core. In the field of exhaust, the X-Point Radiator (XPR), a cold and dense plasma region on closed flux surfaces close to the X-point, was described by an analytical model that provides an understanding of its formation as well as its stability, i.e., the conditions under which it transitions into a deleterious MARFE with the potential to result in a disruptive termination. With the XPR close to the divertor target, a new detached divertor concept, the compact radiative divertor, was developed. Here, the exhaust power is radiated before reaching the target, allowing close proximity of the X-point to the target. No limitations by the shallow field line angle due to the large flux expansion were observed, and sufficient compression of neutral density was demonstrated. With respect to the pumping of non-recycling impurities, the divertor enrichment was found to mainly depend on the ionisation energy of the impurity under consideration. In the area of MHD physics, analysis of the hot plasma core motion in sawtooth crashes showed good agreement with nonlinear 2-fluid simulations. This indicates that the fast reconnection observed in these events is adequately described including the pressure gradient and the electron inertia in the parallel Ohm’s law. Concerning disruption physics, a shattered pellet injection system was installed in collaboration with the ITER International Organisation. Thanks to the ability to vary the shard size distribution independently of the injection velocity, as well as its impurity admixture, it was possible to tailor the current quench rate, which is an important requirement for future large devices such as ITER. Progress was also made modelling the force reduction of VDEs induced by massive gas injection on AUG. The H-mode density limit was characterised in terms of safe operational space with a newly developed active feedback control method that allowed the stability boundary to be probed several times within a single discharge without inducing a disruptive termination. Regarding integrated operation scenarios, the role of density peaking in the confinement of the ITER baseline scenario (high plasma current) was clarified. The usual energy confinement scaling ITER98( p,y ) does not capture this effect, but the more recent H20 scaling does, highlighting again the importance of developing adequate physics based models. Advanced tokamak scenarios, aiming at large non-inductive current fraction due to non-standard profiles of the safety factor in combination with high normalised plasma pressure were studied with a focus on their access conditions. A method to guide the approach of the targeted safety factor profiles was developed, and the conditions for achieving good confinement were clarified. Based on this, two types of advanced scenarios (‘hybrid’ and ‘elevated’ q -profile) were established on AUG and characterised concerning their plasma performance.

Abstract

Within the 9th European Framework programme, since 2021 EUROfusion is operating five tokamaks under the auspices of a single Task Force called ‘Tokamak Exploitation’. The goal is to benefit from the complementary capabilities of each machine in a coordinated way and help in developing a scientific output scalable to future largre machines. The programme of this Task Force ensures that ASDEX Upgrade, MAST-U, TCV, WEST and JET (since 2022) work together to achieve the objectives of Missions 1 and 2 of the EUROfusion Roadmap: i) demonstrate plasma scenarios that increase the success margin of ITER and satisfy the requirements of DEMO and, ii) demonstrate an integrated approach that can handle the large power leaving ITER and DEMO plasmas. The Tokamak Exploitation task force has therefore organized experiments on these two missions with the goal to strengthen the physics and operational basis for the ITER baseline scenario and for exploiting the recent plasma exhaust enhancements in all four devices (PEX: Plasma EXhaust) for exploring the solution for handling heat and particle exhaust in ITER and develop the conceptual solutions for DEMO. The ITER Baseline scenario has been developed in a similar way in ASDEX Upgrade, TCV and JET. Key risks for ITER such as disruptions and run-aways have been also investigated in TCV, ASDEX Upgrade and JET. Experiments have explored successfully different divertor configurations (standard, super-X, snowflakes) in MAST-U and TCV and studied tungsten melting in WEST and ASDEX Upgrade. The input from the smaller devices to JET has also been proven successful to set-up novel control schemes on disruption avoidance and detachment.

Abstract

In 2021 JET exploited its unique capabilities to operate with T and D–T fuel with an ITER-like Be/W wall (JET-ILW). This second major JET D–T campaign (DTE2), after DTE1 in 1997, represented the culmination of a series of JET enhancements—new fusion diagnostics, new T injection capabilities, refurbishment of the T plant, increased auxiliary heating, in-vessel calibration of 14 MeV neutron yield monitors—as well as significant advances in plasma theory and modelling in the fusion community. DTE2 was complemented by a sequence of isotope physics campaigns encompassing operation in pure tritium at high T-NBI power. Carefully conducted for safe operation with tritium, the new T and D–T experiments used 1 kg of T (vs 100 g in DTE1), yielding the most fusion reactor relevant D–T plasmas to date and expanding our understanding of isotopes and D–T mixture physics. Furthermore, since the JET T and DTE2 campaigns occurred almost 25 years after the last major D–T tokamak experiment, it was also a strategic goal of the European fusion programme to refresh operational experience of a nuclear tokamak to prepare staff for ITER operation. The key physics results of the JET T and DTE2 experiments, carried out within the EUROfusion JET1 work package, are reported in this paper. Progress in the technological exploitation of JET D–T operations, development and validation of nuclear codes, neutronic tools and techniques for ITER operations carried out by EUROfusion (started within the Horizon 2020 Framework Programme and continuing under the Horizon Europe FP) are reported in (Litaudon et al Nucl. Fusion accepted), while JET experience on T and D–T operations is presented in (King et al Nucl. Fusion submitted).

Abstract

In high- β scenarios with on-axis co-current electron cyclotron current drive, which normally lowers q _0 below unity, the absence of sawteeth suggests the involvement of an additional current redistribution mechanism beyond neoclassical current diffusion. This is supported by imaging motional Stark effect diagnostic measurements, which indicate that q _0 remains consistently around 1. This phenomenon is observed in the presence of a 1/1 mode, indicating its potential role in the current redistribution. It is shown that the mode’s ability to modify the central current and suppress sawteeth increases with plasma pressure. These findings align with a recent theoretical model, which predicts a pressure threshold for sawtooth avoidance by a 1/1 quasi-interchange mode and where this threshold increases with the strength of inward current diffusion. Moreover, the advantages of the flux pumping scenario for future machines are highlighted.

Abstract

An overview of recent results obtained at the tokamak ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) is given. A work flow for predictive profile modelling of AUG discharges was established which is able to reproduce experimental H-mode plasma profiles based on engineering parameters only. In the plasma center, theoretical predictions on plasma current redistribution by a dynamo effect were confirmed experimentally. For core transport, the stabilizing effect of fast ion distributions on turbulent transport is shown to be important to explain the core isotope effect and improves the description of hollow low-Z impurity profiles. The L–H power threshold of hydrogen plasmas is not affected by small helium admixtures and it increases continuously from the deuterium to the hydrogen level when the hydrogen concentration is raised from 0 to 100%. One focus of recent campaigns was the search for a fusion relevant integrated plasma scenario without large edge localised modes (ELMs). Results from six different ELM-free confinement regimes are compared with respect to reactor relevance: ELM suppression by magnetic perturbation coils could be attributed to toroidally asymmetric turbulent fluctuations in the vicinity of the separatrix. Stable improved confinement mode plasma phases with a detached inner divertor were obtained using a feedback control of the plasma β. The enhanced Dα H-mode regime was extended to higher heating power by feedback controlled radiative cooling with argon. The quasi-coherent exhaust regime was developed into an integrated scenario at high heating power and energy confinement, with a detached divertor and without large ELMs. Small ELMs close to the separatrix lead to peeling-ballooning stability and quasi continuous power exhaust. Helium beam density fluctuation measurements confirm that transport close to the separatrix is important to achieve the different ELM-free regimes. Based on separatrix plasma parameters and interchange-drift-Alfvén turbulence, an analytic model was derived that reproduces the experimentally found important operational boundaries of the density limit and between L- and H-mode confinement. Feedback control for the X-point radiator (XPR) position was established as an important element for divertor detachment control. Stable and detached ELM-free phases with H-mode confinement quality were obtained when the XPR was moved 10 cm above the X-point. Investigations of the plasma in the future flexible snow-flake divertor of AUG by means of first SOLPS-ITER simulations with drifts activated predict beneficial detachment properties and the activation of an additional strike point by the drifts. Abstract

Purpose It is still in question whether head oscillation damping during walking forms a part of the vestibular function. The anatomical pathway from the vestibular system to the neck muscles via the medial vestibulospinal tract (MVST) is well known but there is a lack of knowledge of the exact influence and modulation of each other in daily life activities. Methods (I) We fixed a head–neck unit of a human cadaver specimen in a steal frame to determine the required pitch-torque for a horizontal head position. The mean value of the acquired pitch-torque was 0.54 Nm. (II) On a motorized treadmill we acquired kinematic data of the head, the sternum and both feet by wireless 3D IMUs for seven asymptomatic volunteers. Subsequently three randomized task conditions were performed. Condition 1 was walking without any irritation. Condition 2 imitated a sacculus irritation using a standardized cVEMP signal. The third condition used an electric neck muscle-irritation (TENS). The data were analyzed by the simulation environment software OpenSim 4.0. Results 8 neck muscle pairs were identified. By performing three different conditions we observed some highly significant deviations of the neck muscle peak torques. Analysing Euler angles, we found during walking a LARP and RALP head pendulum, which also was strongly perturbated. Conclusion Particularly the pitch-down head oscillation damping is the most challenging one for neck muscles, especially under biomechanical concerns. Mainly via MVST motor activity of neck muscles might be modulated by vestibular motor signals. Two simultaneous proprioceptor effects might optimize head oscillation damping. One might be a proprioceptive feedback loop to the vestibular nucleus. Another might trigger the cervicocollic reflex (CCR).

Abstract

This paper discusses otorhinolaryngological symptoms associated with functional disorders of the upper cervical spine. Hints aimed to avoid misdiagnoses of cross-organ otorhinolaryngological symptoms as phobic or psychogenic disorders are presented. Clinically relevant neuroanatomical convergence of the upper cervical spine (occiput to C3) is fundamental for the interpretation of functional otorhinolaryngological symptoms. Based thereon, evidence for the most common cervical differential diagnoses of dizziness, tinnitus, dysphagia, and craniomandibular dysfunction is presented separately. The corresponding therapeutic options and their contraindications are discussed in the concluding chapter. The importance of interdisciplinary cooperation in related fields is emphasized.

Abstract

Fur die Vertikalitatswahrnehmung sind vornehmlich der Utrikulus und die zentrale Verarbeitung der weitergeleiteten Signale verantwortlich. Jedoch gibt es auch extrakranielle Rezeptoren, die einen nicht unwichtigen Anteil an der Wahrnehmung der Vertikalitat haben. Mit der subjektiven visuellen Vertikale (SVV) fur den Utrikulus und der subjektiven Rumpfvertikale (SRV) stehen Parameter zur Verfugung, die in ihrer Beeinflussbarkeit noch nicht vollstandig verstanden sind. Es galt, die Bestimmung der SVV und SRV unter bestimmten Lagepositionen von Kopf und Rumpf und unter dem Einfluss des M. Meniere (MM) als chronische vestibulare Erkrankung zu uberprufen. In einer klinisch-prospektiven Studie wurden 26 Patienten mit MM und 39 gesunde Probanden rekrutiert. Es wurde mit der C‑SVV-Brille und mit dem dreidimensionalen Rumpfexkursionsstuhl untersucht und hierbei der Kopf und Rumpf unterschiedlich positioniert. Die SVV-Bestimmung zeigte sowohl bei Patienten mit MM als auch in der Kontrollgruppe bei gerader Kopfausrichtung eine signifikant geringere Abweichung als bei seitlicher Kopfneigung nach rechts und links. Wurde in der Kontrollgruppe der Rumpf ausgelenkt und der Kopf aber gerade gehalten, war die SVV signifikant genauer (rechts p = 0,015; links p = 0,003). Die SRV zeigte keine Beeinflussung durch das Vorhandensein eines unilateralen MM, wahrend die SVV, wenn sie pathologische Werte zeigte, zur erkrankten Seite hin verkippt war. Die Ergebnisse unserer Studie unterstutzen die Annahme, dass neben der SVV auch die SRV ein eigenstandiger Parameter fur die Vertikalitatswahrnehmung ist, die extrakraniellen Rezeptoren aber anderen Einflussen unterliegen und durch eine hydropische peripher-vestibulare Lasion nicht signifikant verandert werden.

Abstract

The high heat fluxes to the divertor during edge localised mode (ELM) instabilities have to be reduced for a sustainable future tokamak reactor. A solution to reduce the heat fluxes could be the Super-X divertor, which will be tested on MAST-U. ELM simulations for MAST-U Super-X tokamak plasmas have been obtained, using JOREK. A factor 10 decrease in the peak heat flux to the outer target and almost a factor 8 decrease in the ELM energy fluence when comparing the Super-X to a conventional divertor configuration has been found. A detached MAST-U case, after the roll-over in the target parallel electron density flux, is used as a starting point for ELM burn-through simulations. The plasma burns through the neutrals front during the ELM causing the divertor plasma to re-attach. After the crash a transition back to detachment is indicated, where the recovery to pre-ELM divertor conditions occurs in a few milliseconds, when the neutral pressure is high in the divertor. Recovery times are shorter than the inter-ELM phase in previous MAST experiments. The peak ELM energy fluence obtained after the ELM burn-through is 0.82 kJ/m2, which is significantly lower than that predicted from the empirical scaling of the ELM energy fluence - indicating promising results for future MAST-U operations.

Abstract

Ubereinstimmende Annahme ist, dass die subjektive Vertikale (SV) aus einer multimodalen Sensorintegration resultiert. Um die zervikalvestibulare Sensorkompetenz fur die SV besser einschatzen zu konnen, war es Ziel der Pilotstudie, unter lotrechter Kopffixierung eine isolierte subjektive Rumpfvertikale (SRV) zu bestimmen. Unter lotrechter Kopffixierung wurde eine SRV im Altersvergleich und nach monophasischer zervikaler transkutaner elektrischer Nervenstimulation (C-TENS) exploriert. Auf einem dreidimensional auslenkbaren (Kippung, Torsion, Flexion) Rumpfexkursionsstuhl (3-D-RES) wurden junge gesunde Probanden untersucht (n = 49) und mit alteren gesunden Probanden (n = 50) verglichen. Eine weitere junge gesunde Gruppe wurde in Placebo- (n = 27) und C‑TENS-Gruppe (n = 22) unterschieden und in ihrer Vertikalitatswahrnehmung verglichen. In der SRV nach Rumpfflexion zeigte sich das Alter als signifikante Variable (p = 0,021). Die altere Probandengruppe verfehlte im Mittel um 1,8° die physikalische Vertikale mehr als die jungere. Im Durchgangsvergleich zeigte nur die Placebogruppe eine Verbesserung der SRV im Durchschnitt von 4,3° nach Rumpftorsion. Bei der Erhebung einer Vertikalitatsbestimmung sind nicht nur die Makulaorgane beteiligt, sondern ebenfalls zervikovestibulare Sensorafferenzen. Ein Altersunterschied zuungunsten der alteren gesunden Probanden sowie ein ausbleibender Lernerfolg nach angewandter C‑TENS wurden festgestellt. In der Pilotstudie zeigten sich in lotrechter Kopfposition Hinweise auf eine korrekte Empfindung der Rumpfvertikalen, hervorgerufen durch zervikalvestibulare Sensorafferenz.

Abstract

Oxidation reactions catalyzed by enzymes with central iron atoms are essential to life. The nature of these systems has evoked great interest to understand and model their reactivity. Considerable efforts have been made to elucidate the mechanisms that underlie the catalytic transformations. Many simplified, mononuclear model systems are known that allow for the spectroscopic and crystallographic characterization of intermediates relevant to this chemistry, such as iron(IV)-oxo, iron(V)-hydroxo oxo, iron(III)-peroxo, or iron(III)-superoxo complexes. One of the less researched, but still very decisive species is the iron(III)-hydroperoxo moiety that is assumed to be a crucial part of catalytic cycles during oxidation reactions with agents such as hydrogen peroxide, superoxides, or molecular oxygen. Although its molecular structure has not been resolved yet, a multitude of spectroscopic data unequivocally supports the existence of the hydroperoxo ligated iron center and its essential role in oxidation catalysis. The comprehension of the catalytic processes led to the development of powerful homogeneous catalysts for different oxidative conversions, such as dihydroxylation and epoxidation reactions.

Zusammenfassung In der vorliegenden Studie wurde bei 72 Patienten, die zum Zeitpunkt der Untersuchung bereits seit mehr als 3 Monaten unter Schwindelbeschwerden litten und bei denen bisher keine peripher-vestibuläre Genese der Beschwerden mittels bithermischer und rotatorischer Testung nachgewiesen werden konnte, der hochfrequente Anteil des vestibulo-okulären Reflexbogens mittels des Videokopfimpulstestes (vKIT) analysiert. Hierzu wurde der vKIT bei 72 Patienten retrospektiv ausgewertet und mit den Ergebnissen von Rotatorik und Kalorik verglichen. Analysiert wurde beim vKIT das Auftreten von Catch-Up Sakkaden sowie der Gain bzw. Gainseparation. 10 Patienten (n=10; 13,8%) zeigten einen pathologischen veränderten hVOR-Bogen bei hochfrequenter Überprüfung mittels vKIT. Der mittlere Gain der restlichen Gruppe (n=62, 86,2%) zeigte sich mit 0,85 bei horizontaler Testung nach rechts sowie mit 0,87 bei 60 ms bei horizontaler Testung nach links normwertig. Bei Patienten mit chronischen Schwindelbeschwerden, die in der klassischen vestibulären Routinediagnostik mit Kalorik und Rotatorik keine Pathologien aufweisen, sollte eine komplette rezeptor- und frequenzspezifische Diagnostik durchgeführt werden, um eine isoliertes hochfrequentes Schädigungsmuster des vestibulookulären Reflexbogens objektivieren und dokumentieren zu können. Bei einer unklaren Begutachtungssituation sollte daher diese erweiterte Schwindeldiagnostik nicht mehr fehlen.

The perception of verticality is mainly based on utricular afferent signals and central processing of the transmitted signals. However, there are also extracranial receptors that make a considerable contribution to the perception of verticality. With the subjective visual vertical (SVV) for the utricle and the subjective trunk vertical (STV), two different parameters are available that are not fully understood in terms of their response to physiologic and pathologic changes. The aim of this work was to determine SVV and STV under certain positions of the head and trunk as well as under the influence of Menière's disease (MD) as a chronic vestibular disease. In a prospective clinical study, 26 patients with MD and 39 healthy volunteers were recruited. Subjects were examined with C‑SVV glasses and with the three-dimensional trunk excursion chair, while head and torso positions were varied. In both groups, SVV determination is clearly more accurate with an earth-vertical head alignment than with a lateral head tilt (right: MM and control group: p = 0.001; left: MM p = 0.001, control group p = 0.000). If the torso is deflected laterally and the head is held straight, the SVV is significantly more accurate (left p = 0.003, right p = 0.015). The SRV was not affected by the presence of unilateral MD, while pathologic SVV values, if present, indicated the affected side. The results of our study support the assumption that in addition to SVV, SRV is an independent parameter for verticality perception and differs from the SVV in terms of lateralizing a peripheral vestibular deficit. These results suggest that the STV may depend not only on utricular function but also on extracranial afferent signals, and not be significantly altered by the presence of a hydropic peripheral vestibular lesion.

Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit war die selektive zervikovestibulare Provokation mithilfe eines neuen und eigens konstruierten Rumpfexkursionstests (RET). Dieser soll bei fixiertem Kopf und isolierter Rumpfauslenkung eine Beurteilung zervikookularer Reaktionen und mogliche Effekte von Alterungsprozessen ermoglichen. Dem bisher verwendeten Kopfexkursionstest (KET) wurde der RET statistisch gegenubergestellt. Mit beiden Methoden wurden 100 Probanden zweier Altersgruppen (Gruppe26:Altersmedian =26 Jahre; n =50; Gruppe50:Altersmedian =50 Jahre; n =50) einander randomisiert in den jeweils vergleichbaren Kopf-zu-Rumpf-Positionen gegenubergestellt. Im KET war eine signifikante Nystagmusmodulation in horizontaler und vertikaler Nystagmusdimension statistisch nachzuweisen. In der rein zervikalen Provokation mittels RET war diese nur in der horizontalen Nystagmusdimension bei Rumpftorsion signifikant. Der Methodenvergleich zeigte eine signifikant starkere Nystagmusmodulation bei Kopfauslenkung. Gruppe50 zeigte im KET signifikant mehr Vertikalnystagmusaktivitat als Gruppe26. Im RET hingegen war kein signifikanter Unterschied zwischen den Altersgruppen ableitbar. Der gruppenselektive Methodenvergleich wies in Gruppe26 nur eine vermehrte Horizontalnystagmusmodulation in Kopfauslenkung gegenuber Rumpfauslenkung aus. Gruppe50 zeigte generell eine signifikant starkere Reizreaktion auf Kopfauslenkung im KET. Bei der Auswertung der signifikanten Vertikalnystagmusmodulation im RET zeigte sich ein signifikant haufigeres Auftreten des Upbeat-Nystagmus (UBN) gegenuber dem Downbeat-Nystagmus (DBN). Der DBN trat bei Kopfauslenkung im KET in Gruppe50 haufiger auf als in Gruppe26. Im UBN war keine signifikante Altersdifferenz ableitbar. Der Rumpfexkursionstest bietet die methodisch besten Voraussetzungen, um zervikotonische Provokationsnystagmen einschatzen zu konnen. Erst durch Evaluation der adaquaten Auslenkungsgrenzen und Folgeuntersuchungen an zervikal defizitaren Patienten konnen die Effekte der Methode weiter beurteilt werden.

Abstract

Consensus has been established that the subjective vertical (SV) is a result of multimodal sensory integration. In order to be able to calculate the vestibulocervical sensory competence for the SV, the isolated subjective trunk vertical axis (STV) was measured under conditions of vertical head fixation.Young, healthy volunteers (n = 49) were compared to older, healthy volunteers (n = 50) on a three-dimensionally deflectable (tilt, torsion, pitch) trunk excursion chair in which the volunteer's head remains in an upright position. Another young, healthy group was divided into a placebo (n = 27) and a monophasic cervical transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (C-TENS; n = 22) group to examine verticality perception.In the STV after trunk pitch, age was a significant variable (p = 0.021). The older, healthy group of subjects missed the physical vertical by an average of 1.8° more than the younger group. Only the placebo group showed an average improvement in STV of 4.3° after torsion.Apart from the macular organs the vestibulocervical sensory afference is involved in finding the trunk vertical. A difference in age to the disadvantage of the older healthy subjects was observed, as well as a lack of learning success after applied C‑TENS. The presented pilot study was able to confirm that a correct vertical trunk sensation is caused by vestibulocervical sensory afference in upright head position.

Abstract

This paper discusses otorhinolaryngological symptoms associated with functional disorders of the upper cervical spine. Hints aimed to avoid misdiagnoses of cross-organ otorhinolaryngological symptoms as phobic or psychogenic disorders are presented. Clinically relevant neuroanatomical convergence of the upper cervical spine (occiput to C3) is fundamental for the interpretation of functional otorhinolaryngological symptoms. Based thereon, evidence for the most common cervical differential diagnoses of dizziness, tinnitus, dysphagia, and craniomandibular dysfunction is presented separately. The corresponding therapeutic options and their contraindications are discussed in the concluding chapter. The importance of interdisciplinary cooperation in related fields is emphasized.
