We report TeV gamma-ray observations of the ultra-high-energy source MGRO J1908+06 using data from the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Observatory. This source is one of the highest-energy known gamma-ray sources, with emission extending past 200 TeV. Modeling suggests that the bulk of the TeV gamma-ray emission is leptonic in nature, driven by the energetic radio-faint pulsar PSR J1907+0602. Depending on what assumptions are included in the model, a hadronic component may also be allowed. The radio galaxy M87 is the central dominant galaxy of the Virgo Cluster. Very high-energy (VHE, ≳0.1 TeV) emission from M87 has been detected by imaging air Cherenkov telescopes. Recently, marginal evidence for VHE long-term emission has also been observed by the High Altitude Water Cherenkov Observatory, a gamma-ray and cosmic-ray detector array located in Puebla, Mexico. The mechanism that produces VHE emission in M87 remains unclear. This emission originates in its prominent jet, which has been spatially resolved from radio to X-rays. In this paper, we construct a spectral energy distribution from radio to gamma rays that is representative of the nonflaring activity of the source, and in order to explain the observed emission, we fit it with a lepto-hadronic emission model. We found that this model is able to explain nonflaring VHE emission of M87 as well as an orphan flare reported in 2005.

The High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) gamma-ray observatory observes atmospheric showers produced by incident gamma rays and cosmic rays with energy from 300 GeV to more than 100 TeV. A crucial phase in analyzing gamma-ray sources using ground-based gamma-ray detectors like HAWC is to identify the showers produced by gamma rays or hadrons. The HAWC observatory records roughly 25,000 events per second, with hadrons representing the vast majority ($>99.9\%$) of these events. The standard gamma/hadron separation technique in HAWC uses a simple rectangular cut involving only two parameters. This work describes the implementation of more sophisticated gamma/hadron separation techniques, via machine learning methods (boosted decision trees and neural networks), and summarizes the resulting improvements in gamma/hadron separation obtained in HAWC., 35 pages, 9 figures, published in Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A

The extragalactic background light (EBL) contains all the radiation emitted by nuclear and accretion processes in stars and compact objects since the epoch of recombination. Measuring the EBL density directly is challenging, especially in the near- to far-infrared waveband, mainly due to the zodiacal light foreground. Instead, gamma-ray astronomy offers the possibility to indirectly set limits on the EBL by studying the effects of gamma-ray absorption in the very high energy (VHE:$>$100 GeV) spectra of distant blazars. The High Altitude Water Cherenkov gamma ray observatory (HAWC) is one of the few instruments sensitive to gamma rays with energies above 10 TeV. This offers the opportunity to probe the EBL in the near/mid IR region: $\lambda$ = 1 $\mu$m - 100 $\mu$m. In this study, we fit physically motivated emission models to Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) GeV data to extrapolate the intrinsic TeV spectra of blazars. We then simulate a large number of absorbed spectra for different randomly generated EBL model shapes and calculate Bayesian credible bands in the EBL intensity space by comparing and testing the agreement between the absorbed spectra and HAWC extragalactic observations of two blazars. The resulting bands are in agreement with current EBL lower and upper limits, showing a downward trend towards higher wavelength values $\lambda>10\, \mu$m also observed in previous measurements., Comment: Submitted to ApJ

Soil erosion can potentially threaten different resources inside and outside of burned areas, and the risk of water becoming contaminated with sediment may be particularly severe. Various postfire actions, such as applying straw mulch, have been carried out in northwestern Spain in recent years with the aim of mitigating the risk of soil erosion. Nonetheless, because of the short interval between summer wildfire and autumn rains, careful selection and prioritization of the areas to be treated is crucial. Changes in hydrological connectivity could be measured and used as a criterion for selecting such areas. However, studies addressing changes in hydrological connectivity as a consequence of forest fires are scarce. In the present study, we assessed the effects of fire and postfire helimulching on the hydrological connectivity and sediment loads in a forest catchment burned by a wildfire in August 2016. Sediment yields were recorded in 20 plots (180 m²). Hydrological connectivity was computed with a version of the Borselli index and two alternative weighting factors: the C factor from the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation and a factor based on field surveys of soil burn severity. The effect of mulching was also considered. The results indicate that the version of the Borselli index based on field measurements of soil burn severity best reflects the susceptibility to postfire sediment delivery. Moreover, this method was also suitable for evaluating the effect of mulching on soil erosion. The study findings may help forest managers to plan postfire actions.

International audience; The High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory and the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) are two leading instruments in the ground-based very-high-energy γ-ray domain. HAWC employs the water Cherenkov detection (WCD) technique, while H.E.S.S. is an array of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs). The two facilities therefore differ in multiple aspects, including their observation strategy, the size of their field of view, and their angular resolution, leading to different analysis approaches. Until now, it has been unclear if the results of observations by both types of instruments are consistent: several of the recently discovered HAWC sources have been followed up by IACTs, resulting in a confirmed detection only in a minority of cases. With this paper, we go further and try to resolve the tensions between previous results by performing a new analysis of the H.E.S.S. Galactic plane survey data, applying an analysis technique comparable between H.E.S.S. and HAWC. Events above 1 TeV are selected for both data sets, the point-spread function of H.E.S.S. is broadened to approach that of HAWC, and a similar background estimation method is used. This is the first detailed comparison of the Galactic plane observed by both instruments. H.E.S.S. can confirm the γ-ray emission of four HAWC sources among seven previously undetected by IACTs, while the three others have measured fluxes below the sensitivity of the H.E.S.S. data set. Remaining differences in the overall γ-ray flux can be explained by the systematic uncertainties. Therefore, we confirm a consistent view of the γ-ray sky between WCD and IACT techniques.

However, in most cases, the training programis poorly reported; the exercise type, volume, and intensity are briefly mentioned; and the sample size, selection criteria, and follow-up time vary greatly across studies. Purpose The EFIBAR study aims to investigate over 1 year the effects of a 16-week supervised exercise program, initiated immediately after bariatric surgery, on weight loss (primary outcome), body composition, cardiometabolic risk, physical fitness, and quality of life in patients with severe/extreme obesity. Material and Methods The EFIBAR study is a parallel-group, superiority, randomized controlled trial (RCT), comprising 80 surgery patients. Half of the participants, randomly selected, perform a 16-week supervised exercise program, including both strength and aerobic training, starting immediately after the surgery (7–14 days). Forest spatial structure describes the relationships among different species in the same forest community. Automation in the monitoring of the structural forest changes and forest mapping is one of the main utilities of applications of modern geoinformatics methods. The obtaining objective information requires the use of spatial data derived from photogrammetry and remote sensing. This paper investigates the possibility of applying light detection and ranging (LiDAR) point clouds and geographic information system (GIS) analyses for automated mapping and detection changes in vegetation structure during a year of study. The research was conducted in an area of the Ourense Province (NWSpain). The airborne laser scanning (ALS) data, acquired in August 2019 and June of 2020, reveal detailed changes in forest structure. Based on ALS data the vegetation parameters will be analysed.To study the structural behaviour of the tree vegetation, the following parameters are used in each one of the sampling areas: (1) Relationship between the tree species present and their stratification; (2) Vegetation classification in fuel types; (3) Biomass (Gi); (4) Number of individuals per area; and (5) Canopy cover fraction (CCF). Besides, the results were compared with the ground truth data recollected in the study area.The development of a quantitative structural model based on Aerial Laser Scanning (ALS) point clouds was proposed to accurately estimate tree attributes automatically and to detect changes in forest structure. Results of statistical analysis of point cloud show the possibility to use UAV LiDAR data to characterize changes in the structure of vegetation.

The highest-energy known gamma-ray sources are all located within 0.5 degrees of extremely powerful pulsars. This raises the question of whether ultra-high-energy (UHE; $>$ 56 TeV) gamma-ray emission is a universal feature expected near pulsars with a high spin-down power. Using four years of data from the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Gamma-Ray Observatory, we present a joint-likelihood analysis of ten extremely powerful pulsars to search for UHE gamma-ray emission correlated with these locations. We report a significant detection ($>$ 3$��$), indicating that UHE gamma-ray emission is a generic feature of powerful pulsars. We discuss the emission mechanisms of the gamma rays and the implications of this result. Background Forest fires have increased in extent and intensity in the Mediterranean area in recent years, threatening forest ecosystems through loss of vegetation, changes in soil properties, and increased soil erosion rates, particularly in severely burned areas. However, establishing the relationships between burn severity and soil properties that determine infiltration remain challenging. Determining where soil burn severity evaluation should be carried out is critical for planning urgent measures to mitigate post-fire soil erosion. Although previous research has indicated that spectral indices are suitable for assessing fire severity, most of the classifications used consider combined effects in vegetation and soil. Moreover, the relationship between spectral indices and soil burn severity has scarcely been explored until now. Results We selected three pine stands in Spain for study immediately after being burned by wildfires. We analyzed various soil properties (soil saturated hydraulic conductivity, mean weight diameter of soil aggregates, and soil organic carbon) in relation to six levels of soil burn severity in all three stands. In addition, we established 25 field plots in the burned areas. We computed ten spectral indices for each plot by using Sentinel-2 satellite data. The soil burn severity categories indicated the degree of degradation of important soil properties related to soil erosion susceptibility. Of the spectral indices considered, the relativized burn ratio (RBR) was the best predictor of cumulative infiltration and mean weight diameter of soil aggregates. The differenced mid-infrared bispectral index (dMIRBI) was most closely correlated with soil organic carbon content. Conclusions The findings demonstrate the potential applicability of remote sensing to determining changes in soil properties after fire.

The High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Gamma-Ray Observatory surveys the very high energy sky in the 300 GeV to $>100$ TeV energy range. HAWC has detected two blazars above $11\sigma$, Markarian 421 (Mrk 421) and Markarian 501 (Mrk 501). The observations are comprised of data taken in the period between June 2015 and July 2018, resulting in a $\sim 1038$ days of exposure. In this work we report the time-averaged spectral analysis for both sources above 0.5 TeV. Taking into account the flux attenuation due to the extragalactic background light (EBL), the intrinsic spectrum of Mrk 421 is described by a power law with an exponential energy cut-off with index $\alpha=2.26\pm(0.12)_{stat}(_{-0.2}^{+0.17})_{sys}$ and energy cut-off $E_c=5.1\pm(1.6)_{stat}(_{-2.5}^{+1.4})_{sys}$ TeV, while the intrinsic spectrum of Mrk 501 is better described by a simple power law with index $\alpha=2.61\pm(0.11)_{stat}(_{-0.07}^{+0.01})_{sys}$. The maximum energies at which the Mrk 421 and Mrk 501 signals are detected are 9 and 12 TeV, respectively. This makes these some of the highest energy detections to date for spectra averaged over years-long timescales. Since the observation of gamma radiation from blazars provides information about the physical processes that take place in their relativistic jets, it is important to study the broad-band spectral energy distribution (SED) of these objects. To this purpose, contemporaneous data in the gamma-ray band to X-ray range, and literature data in the radio to UV range, were used to build time-averaged SEDs that were modeled within a synchrotron self-Compton leptonic scenario., Comment: 16 pages, 5 tables, 9 figures

The study of high-energy gamma rays from passive Giant Molecular Clouds (GMCs) in our Galaxy is an indirect way to characterize and probe the paradigm of the "sea" of cosmic rays in distant parts of the Galaxy. By using data from the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory, we measure the gamma-ray flux above 1 TeV of a set of these clouds to test the paradigm. We selected high-galactic latitude clouds that are in HAWC's field-of-view and which are within 1~kpc distance from the Sun. We find no significant excess emission in the cloud regions, nor when we perform a stacked log-likelihood analysis of GMCs. Using a Bayesian approach, we calculate 95\% credible intervals upper limits of the gamma-ray flux and estimate limits on the cosmic-ray energy density of these regions. These are the first limits to constrain gamma-ray emission in the multi-TeV energy range ($>$1 TeV) using passive high-galactic latitude GMCs. Assuming that the main gamma-ray production mechanism is due to proton-proton interaction, the upper limits are consistent with a cosmic-ray flux and energy density similar to that measured at Earth., 6 figures, 6 tables

We present a new catalog of TeV gamma-ray sources using 1523 days of data from the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory. The catalog represents the most sensitive survey of the Northern gamma-ray sky at energies above several TeV, with three times the exposure compared to the previous HAWC catalog, 2HWC. We report 65 sources detected at $\geq$ 5 sigma significance, along with the positions and spectral fits for each source. The catalog contains eight sources that have no counterpart in the 2HWC catalog, but are within $1^\circ$ of previously detected TeV emitters, and twenty sources that are more than $1^\circ$ away from any previously detected TeV source. Of these twenty new sources, fourteen have a potential counterpart in the fourth \textit{Fermi} Large Area Telescope catalog of gamma-ray sources. We also explore potential associations of 3HWC sources with pulsars in the ATNF pulsar catalog and supernova remnants in the Galactic supernova remnant catalog., 20 pages, 11 figures. We present the detection of VHE gamma-ray emission above 100 TeV from HAWC J2227+610 with the HAWC observatory. Combining our observations with previously published results by VERITAS, we interpret the gamma-ray emission from HAWC J2227+610 as emission from protons with a lower limit in their cutoff energy of 800 TeV. The most likely source of the protons is the associated supernova remnant G106.3+2.7, making it a good candidate for a Galactic PeVatron. However, a purely leptonic origin of the observed emission cannot be excluded at this time., Accepted for publication by ApJL

Background & aim Worldwide, measures are being implemented to eradicate hepatitis B (HBV) and C (HCV) viruses, which can be transmitted from the mother during childbirth. This study aims to determine the prevalence of HBV and HCV in pregnant women in Spain, focusing on country of origin, epidemiological factors and risk of vertical transmission (VT). Methodology Multicentre open-cohort study performed during 2015. HBV prevalence was determined in 21870 pregnant women and HCV prevalence in 7659 pregnant women. Epidemiological and risk factors for VT were analysed in positive women and differences between HBV and HCV cases were studied. Results HBV prevalence was 0.42% (91/21870) and HCV prevalence was 0.26% (20/7659). Of the women with HBV, 65.7% (44/67) were migrants. The HBV transmission route to the mother was unknown in 40.3% of cases (27/67) and VT in 31.3% (21/67). Among risk factors for VT, 67.7% (42/62) of the women had viraemia and 14.5% (9/62) tested HBeAg-positive. All of the neonates born to HBV-positive mothers received immunoprophylaxis, and none contracted infection by VT. In 80% (16/20) of the women with HCV, the transmission route was parenteral, and nine were intravenous drug users. Viraemia was present in 40% (8/20) of the women and 10% (2/20) were HIV-coinfected. No children were infected. Women with HCV were less likely than women with HBV to breastfeed their child (65% vs. 86%). Conclusions The prevalences obtained in our study of pregnant women are lower than those previously documented for the general population. Among the women with HBV, the majority were migrants and had a maternal family history of infection, while among those with HCV, the most common factor was intravenous drug use. Despite the risk factors observed for VT, none of the children were infected. © 2020 the Author(s)., [Background]: Severe and morbid obesity are increasing globally, particularly in women. As BMI increases, the likelihood of anovulation is higher. The primary aim of the EMOVAR clinical trial is to examine, over the short (16 weeks) and medium (12 months) term, the effects of a supervised physical exercise program (focused primarily on aerobic and resistance training) on ovarian function in women with severe/morbid obesity who have undergone bariatric surgery. Secondary objectives are to examine the effects of the intervention on chronic inflammation, insulin resistance, arterial stiffness, physical fitness, and health-related quality of life. [Methods]: This is a randomized controlled trial in which ∼40 female bariatric surgery patients, aged between 18 and 45 years old, will be included. Participants assigned to the experimental group will perform a total of 48 sessions of supervised concurrent (strength and aerobic) training (3 sessions/week, 60 min/session) spread over 16 weeks. Patients assigned to the control group will receive lifestyle recommendations. Outcomes will be assessed at baseline, week 16 (i.e., after the exercise intervention) and 12 months after surgery. The primary outcome is ovarian function using the Sex-Hormone Binding Globuline, measured in serum. Secondary outcomes are serum levels of anti-mullerian hormone, TSH, T4, FSH, LH, estradiol, prolactine, and free androgen index, as well as oocyte count, the diameters of both ovaries, endometrial thickness, and uterine arterial pulsatility index (obtained from a transvaginal ultrasound), the duration of menstrual bleeding and menstrual cycle duration (obtained by personal interview) and hirsutism (Ferriman Gallwey Scale). Other secondary outcomes include serum markers of chronic inflammation and insulin resistance (i.e., C-reactive protein, interleukin 6, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, leptin, glomerular sedimentation rate, glucose, insulin and the HOMA-IR), arterial stiffness, systolic, diastolic and mean blood pressure, body composition, and total weight loss. Physical fitness (including cardiorespiratory fitness, muscular strength, and flexibility), health-related quality of life (SF-36 v2) and sexual function (Female Sexual Function Index) will also be measured. Resumen Introduccion Los generos Salmonella y Yersinia, pertenecientes a la familia Enterobacteriaceae y Yersiniaceae, respectivamente, son importantes agentes de zoonosis. Especies incluidas en estos generos son causantes de cuadros gastrointestinales y sistemicos. Infecciones por Salmonella . Salmonella incluye dos especies, Salmonella enterica y Salmonella bongori, de las cuales, S. enterica es la que causa con mas frecuencia infeccion en el ser humano. La forma de enfermedad se asocia a los distintos serotipos; los denominados serotipos tifoideos causan la fiebre enterica o fiebre tifoidea, mientras que los serotipos no tifoideos causan cuadros gastrointestinales y pueden producir enfermedad diseminada, a veces focalizada. No es infrecuente la presencia de portadores asintomaticos, sobre todo a nivel de la vesicula biliar. Infecciones por Yersinia . El genero Yersinia incluye 3 especies, Yersinia pestis, Yersinia enterocolitica y Yersinia pseudotuberculosis. Y. pestis, agente etiologico de la peste, es la enfermedad que ha causado tres grandes pandemias que diezmaron la poblacion mundial. Se trata de un agente de bioterrorismo de categoria A. Y. enterocolitica produce enterocolitis, con una mayor incidencia en paises de clima frio. La principal complicacion de la enfermedad enterica es la poliartritis reactiva que se presenta en el 15% de los pacientes, sobre todo portadores del antigeno HLA-B27. Tanto Y. enterocolitica como Y. pseudotuberculosis se asocian a adenitis mesenterica e ilieitis terminal, que pueden confundirse con apendicitis aguda. Ambas especies se asocian a septicemia en pacientes con enfermedades inmunosupresoras, ancianos y hemosiderosis.

Objective To assess vulvovaginal symptoms and urinary incontinence in postmenopausal women. Secondarily to evaluate factors related to the severity of vulvovaginal symptoms and the internal consistency of the used tools. Methods In this cross-sectional study, the Spanish language version of the 21-item Vulvovaginal Symptoms Questionnaire (VSQ) and the 3-item International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire (ICIQ-SF) were applied to 122 postmenopausal Spanish women aged 45 to 75 years. Results Mean age of the whole sample was 59.5 ± 4.9 years; 89.3% had natural menopause, 77.9% reported vulvovaginal symptoms, 54.9% had urinary incontinence, 54.1% were sexually active, and 77.0% currently had a partner. Calculated Cronbach's alpha coefficients were 0.87 and 0.88 for the VSQ and the ICIQ-SF, respectively. Multiple linear regression analysis determined that total VSQ scores (more severe vulvovaginal symptoms) were positively correlated with female age, parity, surgical menopause, being sexually active, economic problems, phytoestrogen use, and more severe urinary incontinence. An inverse correlation was found with urban residency and time since menopause onset. Conclusions Internal consistency of the VSQ and the ICIQ-SF was good in this postmenopausal sample in which age, sexual activity, urinary incontinence, drug use, and other personal aspects were important covariates determining the severity of vulvovaginal symptoms.

Assessing biomass is critical for accounting bioenergy potentials and monitoring forest ecosystem responses to global change and disturbances. Remote sensing, especially Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data combined with field data, is being increasingly used for forest inventory purposes. We evaluated the feasibility of the combined use of freely available data, both remote sensing (LiDAR data provided by the Spanish National Plan for Aerial Ortophotography - PNOA - and Landsat vegetation spectral indices) and field data (from the National Forest Inventory) to estimate stand dendrometric and aboveground biomass variables of the most productive tree species in a pilot area in Galicia (northwestern Spain). The results suggest that the models can accurately predict dendrometric and biomass variables at plot level with an R2 ranging from 0.49 to 0.65 for basal area, from 0.65 to 0.95 for dominant height, from 0.48 to 0.68 for crown biomass and from 0.55 to 0.82 for stem biomass. Our results support the use of this approach to reduce the cost of forest inventories and provide a useful tool for stakeholders to map forest stand variables and biomass stocks.

Fire is a major disturbance in forests and one of the most important carbon emissions sources, which contributes to climate change. Carbon emissions are directly correlated with the degree of organic matter consumption or fire severity. Gaining knowledge about the relative strength of the various explanatory variables is essential to mitigate its environmental impact. We tested an approach that combines wind modeling, light detection and ranging (LiDAR), remotely sensed vegetation indices and topography data for assessing the occurrence of high-severity fire using the random forests ensemble learning method. Data from four wildfires that occurred in Galicia (northwestern Spain) were used to exemplify the application of this approach. The models predicted high-severity occurrence with a classification accuracy ranging from 77 to 94%. High-severity fire occurred more frequently in areas of high simulated wind speed, and more pronouncedly, for cases reported as wind-driven fires. High severity also occurred more frequently in areas of high terrain roughness, on sunny slopes and in low canopy base height stands. This approach allowed predicting spatially explicit fire severity at a mean scale level (resolution of 25 m) with accuracy rates from 80 to 95%. This approach may be helpful for fire managers when delimiting and planning fuel treatments for severity mitigation or during fire suppression, and for post hoc case studies.

Female sexual dysfunction (FSD) includes different disorders that are highly prevalent in perimenopausal and older women which require precise diagnosis and management. Screening of FSD should be based on clinical history and the use of screening tools such as the 14-item Changes in Sexual Functioning Questionnaire, the 19-item Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI-19) and its short version (FSFI-6), or the Decreased Sexual Desire Screener. The clinical exam should include the assessment of menopausal symptoms, vulvovaginal atrophy, and comorbidity including pelvic floor disorders, endocrine disorders, depressive symptoms, cancer diseases, and chronic medication use that may interfere with sexuality. The management of genito-pelvic pain/penetration disorders includes the appropriate treatment of the genitourinary syndrome of menopause, urinary incontinence, and pelvic floor disorders with appropriate selection for surgery and/or other treatments. The management of female sexual interest/arousal disorder (also known as hypoactive sexual desire disorder) may include systemic or topical steroid hormone therapy, including dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate, central-acting agents (flibanserin, bupropion, bremelanotide), and/or natural remedies (Tribulus terrestris, Trigonella foenum-graecum). Female orgasmic disorder may be managed by conductual methods and/or drugs.

Post-fire soil erosion is of major concern because of the effects it has on both soil and water resources. Rapid assessment of post-fire soil burn severity is essential for planning mitigation actions aimed at reducing post-fire flood and erosion risk. Soil burn severity is spatially heterogeneous and mainly depends on the type of vegetation, topography, and weather attributes. It is a descriptor of the magnitude of the fire-induced changes and is the result of the interactions between the above factors and soil characteristics, including soil moisture content. In this study, we used an approach combining pre- and post-fire digitalized georeferenced information to explore the capacity of an ensemble learning method to predict the spatial pattern of soil burn severity. The mean accuracy of both approaches was approximately 75%. The importance of the vegetation variables suggests that pre-fire vegetation structure may play an important role in determining the spatial distribution of soil burn severity.

Intergalactic space is believed to contain non-zero magnetic fields (the Intergalactic Magnetic Field: IGMF) which at scales of Mpc would have intensities below $10^{-9}$ G. Very high energy (VHE $>$100 GeV) gamma rays coming from blazars can produce e$^+$e$^-$ pairs when interacting with the Extragalactic Background Light (EBL) and the Cosmic Microwave Background, generating an electromagnetic cascade of Mpc scale. The IGMF may produce a detectable broadening of the emission beam that could lead to important constrains both on the IGMF intensity and its coherence length. Using the Monte Carlo-based Elmag code, we simulate the electromagnetic cascade corresponding to two detected TeV sources: PKS 2155-304 visible from the South and H1426+428 visible from the North. Assuming an EBL model and intrinsic spectral properties of the sources we obtain the spectral and angular distribution of photons when they arrive at Earth. We include the response of the next generation Cherenkov telescopes by using simplified models for CTA (Cherenkov Telescope Array)-south and CTA-north based on a full simulation of each array performance. Combining the instrument properties with the simulated source fluxes, we calculate the telescope point spread function for null and non-null IGMF intensities and develop a method to test the statistical feasibility of detecting IGMF imprints by comparing the resulting angular distributions. Our results show that for the analysed source PKS 2155-304 corresponding to the southern site, CTA should be able to detect IGMF with intensities stronger than 10$^{-14.5}$G within an observation time of $\sim$100 hours., Accepted for publication by ApJ, 13 pages, 13 figures

Mastication is commonly used as a fuel reduction treatment to minimize severe wildfires in fire-prone areas worldwide. Although mastication of non-commercial burned trees has become common practice in NW Spain in recent years, little is known about the possible effects on fuels, soil physical properties and vegetation recovery. In this study, sites in NW Spain (Arbo and Soutomaior) where non-commercial Pinus pinaster Ait. stands burned in August 2016 in NW Spain were selected for study. In both sites the fires scorched tree crowns and caused moderate soil burn severity. In January 2017, burned trees in 15 plots (10 in Arbo and 5 in Soutomaior) were masticated using a steel track tractor with a front mounted rotating toothed drum. In addition, five plots in Arbo were masticated using a walking excavator with a mulching head. In the 10 remaining plots (5 in each site) the trees were cut with a chainsaw and manually moved offsite. The fuel distribution categories were determined immediately after mastication. Soil penetration resistance and soil shear strength were measured immediately after wildfire, and also immediately, six months and one year after mastication. Species cover and pine seedling density were measured six months and one year after mastication. Percentage masticated material cover ranged from a mean of 60% (s.e. = 1.5) after mastication by tractor in Soutomaior to a mean of 81% (s.e. = 6.0) after mastication by walking excavator in Arbo. 64–75% of material was shredded after mastication. Mastication had no effect on soil shear strength or soil penetration resistance, and it also did not affect total vegetation cover. Species cover was not significantly affected by any of the environmental variables or masticated material cover. Mean pine seedling density was 0.2 seedlings m−2 in masticated and non-masticated plots, irrespective of the equipment used. Mastication did not favour the establishment of non-native species. Mastication after wildfire does not appear to be detrimental to soil conservation and vegetation recovery although further research is needed to confirm this.

Resumen Objetivo El presente estudio investiga el grado de satisfaccion vital en mujeres de mediana edad. Metodo Estudio observacional transversal de 235 mujeres de edad comprendida entre 40 y 65 anos, domiciliadas en Granada, acompanantes sanas de pacientes asistentes a las consultas de obstetricia y ginecologia, que cumplimentaron la Escala de Satisfaccion Vital de Diener, la Escala de Puntuacion de la Menopausia, la Escala de Estres Percibido, el Indice de Severidad de Insomnio y un cuestionario sociodemografico incluyendo datos personales y de la pareja. Tambien se calculo la consistencia interna de cada instrumento. Resultados El 61,3% de las mujeres eran postmenopausicas, el 43,8% tenian obesidad abdominal, el 36,6% sufria insomnio, el 18,7% tenia mala calidad de vida relacionada con la menopausia, el 31,9% hacia ejercicio con regularidad, y el 5,1% tenia problemas economicos graves. La satisfaccion vital tuvo correlaciones (prueba de Spearman) positivas significativas con la edad femenina y la masculina, y negativas significativas con la calidad de vida relacionada con la menopausia, el estres percibido y el insomnio. En el analisis de regresion lineal multiple, la alta satisfaccion vital se correlaciono positivamente con tener una pareja que hiciese ejercicio, e inversamente con tener problemas laborales, el grado de estres percibido y la sospecha de infidelidad de la pareja. Estos factores explican el 40% de la varianza en el analisis de regresion multiple para la satisfaccion vital en mujeres de mediana edad. Conclusion La satisfaccion vital es un constructo relacionado con el estres percibido, los problemas laborales y tener pareja, mientras que los aspectos relacionados con la menopausia y la salud general no tuvieron influencia significativa.

To investigate serum inflammatory markers in singleton gestations complicated with threatened preterm labour (TPL).Pregnant women complicated with TPL (n = 61) were recruited to measure maternal serum levels of a panel of cytokines and C-reactive protein and then compared to controls without TPL, matched for gestational age (n = 64) and term pregnancies in the prodromal phase of labour (PPL) (n = 31). In addition, baseline cytokine levels were compared among cases and controls according to the outcome.Women with TPL displayed higher CRP and white blood counts levels together with lower granulocyte macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GMC-SF) compared to both controls without TPL and to term gestations in the PPL. Also, interleukin 10 (IL-10), IL-6, IL-7, IL-8 and tumour necrosis alpha (TNF-α) levels were found significantly higher in TPL cases as compared to controls without TPL and term women in the PLL. Baseline cytokine levels (except IL-10) were higher among TPL cases who later delivered preterm. TPL cases delivering preterm displayed lower GMC-SF levels as compared to those delivering at term. Multivariate analysis found that gestational age at birth positively correlated with cervical length and inversely with CRP, IL-6 and TNF-α levels (p 0.0001).TPL and preterm birth were related to inflammatory changes in the maternal side that correlate with cervical shortening and the initiation of uterine contractions.

Objective The mental foramen (MF) hosts main neurovascular structures, making it of crucial importance for surgical procedures. This study aimed to analyze the factors influencing the dimensions and location of the MF. Materials and methods Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans of 344 patients were examined for MF dimensions, as well as for the distances from the MF to the alveolar crest (MF-MSB), and to the inferior mandibular border (MF-MIB). Results Gender, mandibular side and presence of accessory mental foramina (AMF) significantly influence MF area. Males, left hemimandibles, and hemimandibles with no AMF had a higher rate of large MF areas (B = − 0.60; p = 0.003, females; B = 0.55; p = 0.005; B = 0.85; p = 0.038). Age, gender and dental status significantly influence MF-MSB distance. The distance decreased as age increased (B = −0.054; p = 0.001), females showed a lower rate of long MF-MSB distances (B = −0.94, p = 0.001), and dentate patients showed a higher rate of long MF-MSB distances (B = 2.27; p = 0.001). Age, gender and emerging angle significantly influenced MF-MIB distance. The distance decreased as age and emerging angle increased (B = −0.01; p = 0.001; B = −0.03; p = 0.001), and females had a lower rate of long MF-MIB distances (B = −1.94, p = 0.001). Conclusions General and local factors influence the dimensions and location of MF. MF dimensions are influenced by gender, mandibular side, anteroposterior position, and the presence of AMF. Distance from MF to alveolar crest is influenced by gender, age and dental status, while the relative MF position is influenced by age and dental status. CBCT images make it possible to analyze the MF in order to avoid complications during surgical procedures SI

Objective: This study aims to assess resilience, depressed mood, and menopausal symptoms in postmenopausal women. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 169 postmenopausal women aged 48 to 68 years were asked to fill out the Wagnild and Young Resilience Scale (WYRS), the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CESD-10), the Menopause Rating Scale (MRS), and a questionnaire containing personal and partner sociodemographic data. Results: The median [interquartile range] age of participating women was 54 [10.0] years. Among the women, 55.6% had increased body mass index, 76.9% had a partner, 17.8% were current smokers, 14.2% had hypertension, 25.4% used psychotropic drugs, and 13.0% used hormone therapy. Forty-five percent of the women had depressed mood (CESD-10 scores Q10), and 34.9% had severe menopausal symptoms (total MRS scores Q17). Less resilience (lower WYRS scores) correlated with depressed mood (higher CESD-10 scores) and severe menopausal symptoms (higher total, psychological, and urogenital MRS scores). Multiple linear regression analysis determined that WYRS scores positively correlated with exercising regularly and inversely correlated with CESD-10 scores (depressed mood). CESD-10 scores positively correlated with somatic and psychological MRS subscale scores and inversely correlated with WYRS scores (less resilience). Conclusions: In this postmenopausal sample, depressed mood and participation in regular exercise correlate with lower and higher resilience, respectively. Depressed mood is associated with the severity of menopausal symptoms (somatic and psychological).

Objective To develop a short 10 item version of the original menopause Cervantes Scale (CS) in order to assess menopausal symptoms in a large cohort of mid-aged Colombian women. Methods Reliability of the new short tool was assessed through internal consistency determination (Cronbach's alpha values) and intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) analysis. Ten items out of the 31 composing the original CS were selected according to their clinical relation with menopausal symptoms. Subsequently the short tool was used to assess menopausal symptoms and related factors among 1739 mid-aged women. Results The CS-10 displayed a mean (±SD) ICC value of 0.45 (±0.06) and a Cronbach's alpha of 0.778 suggesting good internal reliability. For the entire sample median [interquartile range] CS-10 global scores were 10.0 [12.0], and for pre-, peri- and postmenopausal women: 8.0 [9.2], 9.0 [9.0] and 14.0 [14.0], respectively. Median global CS-10 scores significantly increased with menopausal status, marital status and ethnicity. Multiple linear regression analysis determined that higher global CS-10 scores (worse quality of life) correlated with age, parity, years since menopause, body mass index, ethnics (black) and smoking habit. Conclusion The CS-10 seems to be a simple instrument that may aid everyday clinical consultation and help at performing an accurate diagnosis of menopause-related symptoms. Further studies are needed to confirm our preliminary findings.

Objective To determine urinary incontinence (UI) prevalence, related factors and menopause-related quality of life (QoL) in mid-aged Colombian women. Methods A total of 1739 women aged 40–59 were surveyed with the 31 item Cervantes Scale (CS) and a socio-demographic questionnaire. Item 18 of the scale was used to categorize the degree of UI. Remaining 30 items (Adjusted global score) were used to assess global menopause-related QoL. Results Median age of the sample was 46 years. A 26.0% of women presented some degree of UI, rated as moderate to severe in 16.4% of cases. Adjusted global CS scores (excluding item 18) significantly increased with the severity of UI. Mean scores for item 18 were found to be significantly higher in relation to age, menopausal status, body mass index values, lower education and unemployment status. Multiple linear regression analysis determined that age, postmenopausal status and ethnicity (Mestizo) were significantly related to higher item 18 scores, and thus more severe UI. Conclusion This is the first study to report UI prevalence in a large mid-aged Latin American female population in which age, menopausal status and ethnicity were related factors.

The aim of this study was to assess sexual function and related factors (menopause-related quality of life and mood included) in mid-aged Spanish women.This was a cross-sectional study in which 179 sexually active women (40-65 y old) completed the six-item Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI-6), the Menopause Rating Scale (MRS), the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and a sociodemographic questionnaire containing personal and partner data.Median age was 51 years; 55.3% of the women were naturally postmenopausal, 47.5% had increased body mass index, and 6.7% had hypertension. Currently, 4.5% and 19.6% of the women used hormone therapy and psychotropic drugs, respectively. A total of 87.7% had a stable partner; 1.3% of partners abused alcohol and 8.3% had erectile dysfunction. Of the surveyed women, 36.9% displayed total FSFI-6 scores of 19 or less (lower sexual function); 40.2%, mood morbidity (total HADS scores ≥11); and 23.5%, impaired quality of life (severe total MRS scores ≥17). Cronbach α for the FSFI-6 was 0.91. Total FSFI-6 scores positively correlated with female and partner education and inversely with female age and scores on the MRS and the HADS (total and subscale values). Multiple linear regression analysis found that total FSFI-6 scores positively correlated with partner educational level and inversely (worse sexual function) with female age, partner issues (alcohol abuse and erectile dysfunction), and total HADS and urogenital and somatic MRS scores.In this mid-aged Spanish sample, as assessed with a short and consistent tool, lower sexual function was related to menopausal and mood symptoms and several women and partner factors. Further research using this instrument is warranted.

To measure 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] and C-reactive protein (CRP) serum levels in singleton gestations complicated with threatened preterm labour (TPL, n = 59) and compare to normal controls matched for gestational age (n = 64). Cases were treated after blood sample according to institutional protocol. Also, analyte levels were compared among cases according to the outcome.Mean serum 25(OH)D levels were similar between cases and controls, with median white blood cell count and CRP levels found significantly higher in TPL cases. Women with TPL delivering preterm displayed shorter mean cervical lengths along with higher CRP and lower 25(OH)D serum levels when compared to those delivering at term. Two multiple linear regression models were constructed to analyse factors related to gestational age at delivery (pooled analysis and only those with TPL). In both models, gestational age positively correlated to cervical length and inversely to CRP levels; whereas, in the TPL model, only 25(OH)D levels correlated positively.Women complicated with TPL showed similar serum 25(OH)D yet higher CRP levels as compared to controls. TPL cases delivering preterm displayed lower 25(OH)D and higher CRP correlated levels.

Background Studies assessing perceived stress and insomnia in mid-aged women are scarce. Objective To assess perceived stress, insomnia and related factors in mid-aged Spanish women. Method This was a cross sectional study in which 235 women aged 40–65 completed the Menopause Rating Scale (MRS), the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), and a general socio-demographic questionnaire containing personal and partner data. Internal consistency of each tool was also computed. Results Median [interquartile range] age of the sample was 52 [9.0] years. A 61.3% were postmenopausal, 49.4% had increased body mass index values, 43.8% were abdominally obese, 11.9% had hypertension, and 74.0% had a partner. In addition, 9.8% used hormone therapy and 12.3% psychotropic drugs. Multiple linear regression analysis found that higher PSS scores (more stress) inversely correlated with female age and positively with MRS psychological and urogenital scores (impaired quality of life in these domains), total higher ISI scores (more insomnia) and partner premature ejaculation. Higher ISI scores positively correlated with PSS and MRS somatic scores and partner unfaithfulness, and inversely with female hip circumference. Conclusion In this mid-aged Spanish sample perceived stress and insomnia were significantly correlated and related to various female and partner issues.

Objective: The aim of this study was to assess quality of life (QoL) in a cohort of mid-aged Colombian women using the Cervantes Scale (CS). Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 1,739 healthy women aged 40 to 59 years were asked to simultaneously fill out the CS and a questionnaire containing general female demographic data. The CS includes four domains: menopause and health (15 items), psychological (9 items), sexuality (4 items), and couple relationship (3 items). In addition, the menopause and health domain includes three subdomains: vasomotor symptoms, health, and aging. The global CS score may range from 0 to 155 (from better to worse QoL). Results: Multiple linear regression determined that CS scores (global and domains) significantly increased (therefore, worse QoL) with age, menopause status, body mass index, parity, race, and marital and working status. The CS displayed a high internal consistency as Cronbach > values for the global and domain scores were above 0.80. Conclusions: This is the first study to report QoL assessment using the CS among mid-aged Latin American women from Colombia in whom age, menopause status, body mass index, and other personal factors influenced QoL.

Objective To determine the pregnancy outcome as a function of the first-trimester serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D 3 [25(OH)D] status and to compare the 25(OH)D levels in the first and third trimesters. Methods Pregnant women (n = 466) tested for serum 25(OH)D levels during the first trimester were followed up until the end of pregnancy, and the obstetric and neonatal outcomes were compared in reference to the baseline 25(OH)D status. The third-trimester 25(OH)D levels were additionally measured in a subset of women (n = 148). Results The obstetric and neonatal outcomes did not vary as a function of the first-trimester 25(OH)D status. Neither did the 25(OH)D levels vary as a function of pregnancy outcomes. Overall, the 25(OH)D levels significantly decreased from the first to the third trimester. The first- and third-trimester 25(OH)D levels of samples initially taken during autumn/winter were significantly lower than those that were initially taken during spring/summer. Interestingly, the decrease in 25(OH)D levels during the third trimester was independent of the season of sampling. Conclusion The pregnancy outcome was independent of the first-trimester 25(OH)D status. Overall, the 25(OH)D levels significantly decreased in the third trimester. More research in this area is warranted.
