The objective of the Fourth Technical Meeting on Fusion Data Processing, Validation and Analysis was to provide a platform during which a set of topics relevant to fusion data processing, validation and analysis are discussed with the view of extrapolating needs to next step fusion devices such as ITER. The validation and analysis of experimental data obtained from diagnostics used to characterize fusion plasmas are crucial for a knowledge-based understanding of the physical processes governing the dynamics of these plasmas. This paper presents the recent progress and achievements in the domain of plasma diagnostics and synthetic diagnostics data analysis (including image processing, regression analysis, inverse problems, deep learning, machine learning, big data and physics-based models for control) reported at the meeting. The progress in these areas highlight trends observed in current major fusion confinement devices. A special focus is dedicated on data analysis requirements for ITER and DEMO with a particular attention paid to artificial intelligence for automatization and improving reliability of control processes.

Aseismic afterslip has been proposed to drive aftershock sequences. Both afterslip moment and aftershock number broadly increase with mainshock size, but can vary beyond this scaling. We examine whether relative afterslip moment (afterslip moment/mainshock moment) correlates with several key aftershock sequence characteristics, including aftershock number and cumulative moment (both absolute and relative to mainshock size), seismicity rate change, b-value, and Omori decay exponent. We select Mw ≥ 4.5 aftershocks for 41 tectonically varied mainshocks with available afterslip models. Against expectation, relative afterslip moment does not correlate with tested aftershock characteristics or background seismicity rate. Furthermore, adding afterslip moment to mainshock moment does not improve predictions of aftershock number. Our findings place useful empirical constraints on the link between afterslip and potentially damaging Mw ≥ 4.5 aftershocks and raise questions regarding the role afterslip plays in aftershock generation.

Athletes use either a seven-step or eight-step strategy to reach the first hurdle in the 110 m hurdle event. This study investigated the effect of step strategy on the start position, the block exit and the first four approach steps. Two-dimensional video data were collected in the sagittal plane from 12 male sprinters, grouped as seven-step (n = 6) or eight-step (n = 6) strategists. Mean block spacing was 0.08 m further apart, block contact time 0.06s longer, first step 0.25 m longer and first ground contact 0.03s longer for seven-step athletes compared with eight-step athletes. There was also a greater vertical displacement of the centre of mass (CoM) (0.04 m) for the seven-step athletes compared with the eight-step athletes. Additionally, the front hip mean angular acceleration was 197°/s2 slower for the seven-step athletes than the eight-step athletes. There was limited difference between groups for mean horizontal velocity at the moment of block exit (0.14 m/s). These technical alterations provide an important first insight into start kinematics. The findings of this study identify the position in the starting blocks, and the key parameters which pertain to the initial phases for a successful seven-step approach strategy to be employed.

The energy of the lowest-lying triplet state (T1) relative to the ground and first-excited singlet states (S0, S1) plays a critical role in optical multiexcitonic processes of organic chromophores. Focusing on triplet–triplet annihilation (TTA) upconversion, the S0 to T1 energy gap, known as the triplet energy, is difficult to measure experimentally for most molecules of interest. Ab initio predictions can provide a useful alternative, however low-scaling electronic structure methods such as the Kohn–Sham and time-dependent variants of Density Functional Theory (DFT) rely heavily on the fraction of exact exchange chosen for a given functional, and tend to be unreliable when strong electronic correlation is present. Here, we use auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo (AFQMC), a scalable electronic structure method capable of accurately describing even strongly correlated molecules, to predict the triplet energies for a series of candidate annihilators for TTA upconversion, including 9,10 substituted anthracenes and substituted benzothiadiazole (BTD) and benzoselenodiazole (BSeD) compounds. We compare our results to predictions from a number of commonly used DFT functionals, as well as DLPNO-CCSD(T0), a localized approximation to coupled cluster with singles, doubles, and perturbative triples. Together with S1 estimates from absorption/emission spectra, which are well-reproduced by TD-DFT calculations employing the range-corrected hybrid functional CAM-B3LYP, we provide predictions regarding the thermodynamic feasibility of upconversion by requiring (a) the measured T1 of the sensitizer exceeds that of the calculated T1 of the candidate annihilator, and (b) twice the T1 of the annihilator exceeds its S1 energetic value. We demonstrate a successful example of in silico discovery of a novel annihilator, phenyl-substituted BTD, and present experimental validation via low temperature phosphorescence and the presence of upconverted blue light emission when coupled to a platinum octaethylporphyrin (PtOEP) sensitizer. The BTD framework thus represents a new class of annihilators for TTA upconversion. Its chemical functionalization, guided by the computational tools utilized herein, provides a promising route towards high energy (violet to near-UV) emission., Electronic structure theories such as AFQMC can accurately predict the low-lying excited state energetics of organic chromophores involved in triplet–triplet annihilation upconversion. A novel class of benzothiadiazole annihilators is discovered.

SmhA, the A component of the tripartite α-pore-forming toxin from the opportunistic human pathogen Serratia marcescens, has been cloned, overexpressed and purified. Crystals were grown of selenomethionine-derivatized protein, anomalous data were collected, phases were calculated and an initial electron-density map was produced., Tripartite α-pore-forming toxins are constructed of three proteins (A, B and C) and are found in many bacterial pathogens. While structures of the B and C components from Gram-negative bacteria have been described, the structure of the A component of a Gram-negative α-pore-forming toxin has so far proved elusive. SmhA, the A component from the opportunistic human pathogen Serratia marcescens, has been cloned, overexpressed and purified. Triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion (TTA-UC) is an unconventional photophysical process that yields high-energy photons from low-energy incident light and offers pathways for innovation across many technologies, including solar energy harvesting, photochemistry, and optogenetics. Within aromatic organic chromophores, TTA-UC is achieved through several consecutive energy conversion events that ultimately fuse two triplet excitons into a singlet exciton. In chromophores where the singlet exciton is roughly isoergic with two triplet excitons, the limiting step is the triplet-triplet annihilation pathway, where the kinetics and yield depend sensitively on the energies of the lowest singlet and triplet excited states. Herein we report up to 40-fold improvements in upconversion quantum yields using molecular engineering to selectively tailor the relative energies of the lowest singlet and triplet excited states, enhancing the yield of triplet-triplet annihilation and promoting radiative decay of the resulting singlet exciton. Using this general and effective strategy, we obtain upconversion yields with red emission that are among the highest reported, with remarkable chemical stability under ambient conditions.

Athletes use either an eight-step or a seven-step strategy to reach the first hurdle in the 110 m hurdles event. This study investigates the effect of step strategy on the hurdle clearance technique and spatio-temporal parameters of the four steps prior to hurdle clearance. Two-dimensional video data were collected in the sagittal plane from 12 male sprinters, grouped as seven-step (n = 6) or eight-step (n = 6) strategists. The take-off distance was 0.20 m further from the hurdle and the touchdown was 0.42 m closer to the hurdle for seven-step athletes. Additionally, seven-step athletes reduced the length of the final step before hurdle take-off by 0.14 m compared with the previous step, whereas the eight-step athletes extended their final step by 0.17 m. There was negligible difference between the mean horizontal velocities of the two groups throughout the hurdle clearance (0.02 m/s) or the approach time to the first hurdle from the block clearance (0.01 s). This presents an important first insight into the effect of the step strategy on the first hurdle kinematics. Our findings identify the take-off and touchdown distance parameters of the hurdle clearance technique, and approach step characteristics for a successful seven- or eight-step approach strategy to be employed.

The simplified δf mixed-variable/pullback electromagnetic simulation algorithm implemented in XGC for core plasma simulations by Cole et al. [Phys. Plasmas 28, 034501 (2021)] has been generalized to a total- f electromagnetic algorithm that can include, for the first time, the boundary plasma in diverted magnetic geometry with neutral particle recycling, turbulence, and neoclassical physics. The δf mixed-variable/pullback electromagnetic implementation is based on the pioneering work by Kleiber and Mischenko et al. [Kleiber et al., Phys. Plasmas 23, 032501 (2016); Mishchenko et al., Comput. Phys. Commun. 238, 194 (2019)]. An electromagnetic demonstration simulation is performed in a DIII-D-like, H-mode boundary plasma, including a corresponding comparative electrostatic simulation, which confirms that the electromagnetic simulation is necessary for a higher fidelity understanding of the electron particle and heat transport even at the low- β pedestal foot in the vicinity of the magnetic separatrix.

Fluid-based scrape-off layer transport codes, such as UEDGE, are heavily utilized in tokamak analysis and design, but typically require user-specified anomalous transport coefficients to match experiments. Determining the uniqueness of these parameters and the uncertainties in them to match experiments can provide valuable insights to fusion scientists. We leverage recent work in the area of likelihood-free inference (‘simulation-based inference’) to train a neural network, which enables accurate statistical inference of the anomalous transport coefficients given experimental plasma profile input. UEDGE is treated as a black-box simulator and runs multiple times with anomalous transport coefficients sampled from priors, and the neural network is trained on these simulations to emulate the posterior. The neural network is trained as a normalizing flow model for density estimation, allowing it to accurately represent complicated, high-dimensional distribution functions. With a fixed simulation budget, we compare a single-round procedure to a multi-round approach that guides the training simulations toward a specific target observation. We discuss the future possibilities for use of amortized models, which train on a wide range of simulations and enable fast statistical inference for results during experiments.

Tripartite members of the ClyA family of α-PFTs have recently been identified in a number of pathogenic Gram-negative bacteria, including the human pathogen Serratia marcescens. Structures of a Gram-negative A component and a tripartite α-PFT complete pore are unknown and a mechanism for pore formation is still uncertain. Here we characterise the tripartite SmhABC toxin from S. marcescens and propose a mechanism of pore assembly. We present the structure of soluble SmhA, as well as the soluble and pore forms of SmhB. We show that the β-tongue soluble structure is well conserved in the family and propose two conserved latches between the head and tail domains that are broken on the soluble to pore conformational change. Using the structures of individual components, sequence analysis and docking predictions we illustrate how the A, B and C protomers would assemble on the membrane to produce a complete tripartite α-PFT pore.

Experiments on fusion plasmas produce high-dimensional data time series with ever-increasing magnitude and velocity, but turn-around times for analysis of this data have not kept up. For example, many data analysis tasks are often performed in a manual, ad-hoc manner some time after an experiment. In this article, we introduce the Delta framework that facilitates near real-time streaming analysis of big and fast fusion data. By streaming measurement data from fusion experiments to a high-performance compute center, Delta allows computationally expensive data analysis tasks to be performed in between plasma pulses. This article describes the modular and expandable software architecture of Delta and presents performance benchmarks of individual components as well as of an example workflow. Focusing on a streaming analysis workflow where electron cyclotron emission imaging (ECEi) data is measured at KSTAR on the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center’s (NERSC’s) supercomputer we routinely observe data transfer rates of about 4 Gigabit per second. In NERSC, a demanding turbulence analysis workflow effectively utilizes multiple nodes and graphical processing units and executes them in under 5 min. We further discuss how Delta uses modern database systems and container orchestration services to provide web-based real-time data visualization. For the case of ECEi data we demonstrate how data visualizations can be augmented with outputs from machine learning models. By providing session leaders and physics operators, results of higher-order data analysis using live visualizations may make more informed decisions on how to configure the machine for the next shot.

NASA is conducting the Airspace Technology Demonstration-2 to evaluate an Integrated Arrival, Departure, and Surface (IADS) traffic management system. The IADS system is powered by real-time System Wide Information Management feeds which provide an accurate and high fidelity view of the lifecycle of a flight. This data can be leveraged to drive efficiencies in the National Airspace System. For non safety critical applications there is opportunity for third party service providers to offer this type of data-driven prediction service in near real-time. This paper investigates the gate conflict prediction problem as a concrete use case which could help drive efficiencies. We model gate conflicts as a regression problem and describe the iterative process of model building, model validation, and evaluation used to assess the efficacy of our approach. We quantify our predictive accuracy and identify paths for improvement. Through this iterative process we hope to evolve our models and methods to a near real-time prediction service.

Recent advances in photoredox catalysis have made it possible to execute a multitude of challenging synthetic transformations, polymerizations, and surface modifications 1,2,3. In all cases, these transformations require ultraviolet or visible light stimuli. The use of visible light irradiation has intrinsic challenges. For example, the penetration of visible light is very low through most reaction media, leading to problems in large scale reactions. Moreover, reactants can compete with the photocatalysts for incident light absorption, limiting scope. Near infrared (NIR) radiation can overcome many of these fundamental problems. NIR light is known to have a much higher penetration depth through a variety of media, notably biological tissue4. Here, we demonstrate a variety of photoredox transformations under infrared radiation by utilizing the photophysical process of triplet fusion upconversion. This generates molecules in their singlet excited state that can perform single electron transfer (SET), serving as photocatalysts or photoinitiators. We illustrate that this is a general strategy applicable to a wide range of photoredox reactions. We tune the upconversion components to adjust the output light, accessing both orange light and blue light from low-energy infrared (IR) light, by pair-wise manipulation of the sensitizer and annihilator. We further demonstrate that the annihilator itself can be used as a photocatalyst, simplifying the reaction. This approach allows us to execute catalysis through several barriers that are impenetrable by visible light, expanding the landscape of photocatalysis to a variety of new materials and environments. The results demonstrated here allow high-energy transformations from low-energy IR light with all the benefits that the latter affords.

Summary The emerging field of bioelectricity has revealed numerous new roles for ion channels beyond the nervous system, which can be exploited for applications in regenerative medicine. Developing such biomedical interventions for birth defects, cancer, traumatic injury, and bioengineering first requires knowledge of ion channel targets expressed in tissues of interest. This information can then be used to select combinations of small molecule inhibitors and/or activators that manipulate the bioelectric state. Here, we provide an overview of electroceutical design environment (EDEn), the first bioinformatic platform that facilitates the design of such therapeutic strategies. This database includes information on ion channels and ion pumps, linked to known chemical modulators and their properties. The database also provides information about the expression levels of the ion channels in over 100 tissue types. Siliceous sinter is formed by biogenic and abiogenic opal deposition around hot springs and geysers. Using Structure-from-Motion photogrammetry we generated three-dimensional models of Giant and Castle Geysers from the Upper Geyser Basin of Yellowstone National Park. We use these models to calculate an approximate mass of sinter for each (~2 and ~ 5 kton, respectively) and estimate a range of plausible long-term deposition rates for Castle Geyser (470 to 940 kg·yr−1). We estimate ~2% of the silica discharged from Castle Geyser is deposited as sinter in the cone and proximal terraces. We collected 15 sinter samples following the stratigraphy of each geyser from the older terrace to the younger cone and examined them using a variety of analytical methods. This study aimed to identify performance indicators that discriminate winning and losing in elite men’s and women’s Rugby Union during the latest World Cup competitions. The knockout stages of the men’s 2015 Rugby World Cup (n = 8) and women’s 2014 Rugby World Cup (n = 8) were compared. Findings suggest that in the men’s game, winning teams kicked a greater percentage of possession in the opposition 22–50 m with a view to gaining territory and pressuring the opposition (winners = 16%, losers = 7%). In the women’s game successful teams adopted a more possession-driven attacking approach in this area of the pitch. Successful women’s teams appear more willing to attack with ball in hand following a kick receipt and adopt a more expansive game through attacking with wider carries in the outside channels. The percentage of lineouts won on the opposition ball was found to be an important performance indicator that discriminates winners and losers, regardless of sex (winners = 18%, losers = 11%). Findings suggest successful men’s and women’s teams adopt different tactical approaches to knockout competitions, this knowledge should be used as a basis for coaches to develop tactical approaches and training methods which are sex dependent.

An improved understanding of the controls on reservoir quality is key to ongoing and future exploration of the Central North Sea Triassic play. This paper presents a regional integrated study of 50 000 ft of wireline log data, 10 000 ft of core, 4431 routine core analyses measurements and 377 thin sections from 86 cored wells. Triassic Skagerrak Formation sandstones represent thin-bedded heterogeneous reservoirs deposited in a dryland fluvial–lacustrine setting. Fluvial-channel facies are typically fine–medium grained and characterized by a low clay content, whilst lake-margin terminal splay facies are finer grained, more argillaceous and micaceous. Lacustrine intervals are mud-dominated. Primary depositional textures retain a primary control on porosity evolution through burial. Optimal reservoir quality occurs in aerially and stratigraphically restricted fluvial-channel tracts on the Drake, Greater Marnock, Puffin and Gannet terraces, and the J-Ridge area. These primary textural and compositional controls are overprinted by mechanical compaction, the development of early overpressure and diagenesis. Anomalously high porosities are retained at depth in fluvial sandstones that have a low degree of compaction and cementation, including chlorite. Forward modelling of reservoir quality using Touchstone™ software has been validated using well UK 30/8-3 where reservoir depths are >16 000 ft TVDSS (true vertical depth subsea).

A new reservoir quality model is proposed for the Late Cretaceous Springar Formation sandstones of the Voring Basin. Instead of a depth-related compactional control on reservoir quality, distinct high- and low-permeability trends are observed. Fan sequences which sit on the high-permeability trend are characterized by coarse-grained facies with a low matrix clay content. These facies represent the highest energy sandy turbidite facies within the depositional system, and were deposited in channelized or proximal lobe settings. Fan sequences on the low-permeability trend are characterized by their finer grain size and the presence of detrital clay, which has been diagenetically altered to a highly microporous, illitic, pore-filling clay. These fan sequences are interpreted to have been deposited in proximal–distal lobe environments. Original depositional facies determines the sorting, grain size and detrital clay content, and is the fundamental control on reservoir quality, as the illitization of detrital clay is the main mechanism for reductions in permeability. Core-scale depositional facies were linked to seismic-scale fan elements in order to better predict porosity and permeability within each fan system, allowing calibrated risking and ranking of prospects within the Springar Formation play.

The Knarr Field is located in the northern Norwegian North Sea, beyond the Brent Group delta fairway. Knarr was discovered in 2008 with the Jordbaer well, additional resources were added to the field in 2011 with the successful Jordbaer Vest well. The field extends over an area of approximately 20 km 2 . The original oil in place is estimated to be 26 MSm 3 (163 MBBL). The reservoir is the Late Pliensbachian Cook Formation and its current burial depth is approximately −3700 m true vertical depth subsea (TVDSS). In Knarr, the Cook Formation is split into five sandstones that are separated by four shale intervals which can be correlated across the field. The three lower sands (Lower Cook) are interpreted to have been deposited in a tidally-dominated environment, while the upper two sandstones (Upper Cook) were deposited in a wave-dominated shallow-marine setting. The reservoir properties of the Cook Formation in the Knarr area are remarkably good for a reservoir at this depth, with porosities up to 28% and permeabilities in excess of 1 D. The good reservoir properties are the result of grain-coating chlorite, which has inhibited diagenetic quartz development. The field is developed with three oil producers and three water injectors produced via a floating production storage and offloading vessel (FPSO). First oil was achieved in March 2015.

We report the radiocarbon age, chemistry, and mineralogy of sinter deposits from Castle and Giant Geyser in the Upper Geyser Basin of Yellowstone National Park. At each geyser, we sampled following...

Joint kinetics of the lower limb (hip, knee, ankle, midfoot and metatarsophalangeal joints) were investigated during the acceleration phase of bend sprinting and straight-line sprinting. Within the bend sprinting literature, it is generally accepted that sprint performance on the bend is restricted by moments in the non-sagittal plane preventing the production of force in the sagittal plane. However, there is limited evidence in conditions representative of elite athletics performance that supports this hypothesis. Three-dimensional kinematic and ground reaction force data were collected from seven participants during sprinting on the bend (36.5 m radius) and straight, allowing calculation of joint moment, power and energy. No changes in extensor moment were observed at the hip and knee joints. Large effect sizes (g = 1.07) suggest a trend towards an increase in left step peak ankle plantarflexion moment. This could be due to a greater need for stabilisation of the ankle joint as a consequence of non-sagittal plane adaptations of the lower limb. In addition, the observed increase in peak MTP joint plantar-flexor moment might have implications for injury risk of the fifth metatarsal. Energy generation, indicated by positive power, in the sagittal plane at the MTP and ankle joints was moderately lower on the bend than straight, whilst increases in non-sagittal plane energy absorption were observed at the ankle joint. Therefore, energy absorption at the foot and ankle may be a key consideration in improving bend sprinting performance.

The Third IAEA Technical Meeting on Fusion Data Processing, Validation and Analysis took place at the IAEA Headquarters in Vienna, Austria, from 28-31 May and brought together more than 60 scientists and engineers from 19 Member States, the European Commission and ITER Organisation working on data analysis and machine learning (ML) methods for the processing of fusion data, collected either from experimental diagnostics or from plasma simulations. 'Accurate data processing leads to a better understanding of the physics related to nuclear fusion research. It is essential for the careful estimate of the error bars of the raw measurements and processed data,' said D. Mazon (Chair, CEA, France) in his introductory talk and progress has been shown in this direction during the meeting. In particular the meeting discussed new developments in fusion R&D applications in the following areas: inversion techniques, such as tomography; magnetic topology reconstruction, such as equilibrium reconstructions; system identification; scaling laws determination and their accuracy for extrapolation from current machines to fusion reactors; model-based algorithms for control applications; identification of spurious and undesired events, such as disruptive phenomena or hot spots in infra-red images using sophisticated mathematical techniques like neural network and support vector machines. Discussions also focused on the potential use of these techniques for ITER, in particular, on their relevance to the first ITER plasma. The use of Integrated Modelling & Analysis Suite (IMAS) infrastructure - a convenient platform that allows implementation of different simulation codes in the same format - and synthetic diagnostics that could be coupled with this structure, in order to test the different mathematical approaches developed by the meeting participants, were explored in detail. Recent results and progress in the development of new tools will be discussed during the next meeting on the topic, scheduled in 2021.

A decrease in speed when sprinting on the bend compared with the straight has been attributed to kinetic, kinematic and spatiotemporal modifications. Although maximal speed is dependent on an athlete's ability to accelerate, there is limited research investigating the acceleration phase of bend sprinting. This study used a lower limb and trunk marker set with 15 optoelectronic cameras to examine kinematic and spatiotemporal variables of the lower limb during sprinting on the bend and straight. Nine sprinters completed up to six 30 m maximal effort trials in bend (radius 36.5 m, lane one) and straight conditions. An increase in body lateral lean at touchdown resulted in a number of asymmetric kinematic modifications. Whilst the left limb demonstrated a greater peak hip adduction, peak hip internal rotation and peak ankle eversion on the bend compared with the straight, the right limb was characterised by an increase in peak hip abduction. These results demonstrate that kinematic modifications start early in the race and likely accumulate, resulting in greater modifications at maximal speed. It is recommended that strength and conditioning programmes target the hip, ankle and foot in the non-sagittal planes. In addition, sprint training should prioritise specificity by occurring on the bend.

The alpha helical CytolysinA family of pore forming toxins (α-PFT) contains single, two, and three component members. Structures of the single component Eschericia coli ClyA and the two component Yersinia enterolytica YaxAB show both undergo conformational changes from soluble to pore forms, and oligomerization to produce the active pore. Here we identify tripartite α-PFTs in pathogenic Gram negative bacteria, including Aeromonas hydrophila (AhlABC). We show that the AhlABC toxin requires all three components for maximal cell lysis. We present structures of pore components which describe a bi-fold hinge mechanism for soluble to pore transition in AhlB and a contrasting tetrameric assembly employed by soluble AhlC to hide their hydrophobic membrane associated residues. We propose a model of pore assembly where the AhlC tetramer dissociates, binds a single membrane leaflet, recruits AhlB promoting soluble to pore transition, prior to AhlA binding to form the active hydrophilic lined pore., Pore forming toxins (PFTs) form the major group of virulence factors in many pathogenic bacteria. Here the authors identify tripartite α-helical PFTs in pathogenic Gram negative bacteria and structurally characterize AhlABC from Aeromonas hydrophila and propose a model for its pore assembly.
