We review the topological gauge theory of the superconductor-to-superinsulator transition. The possible intermediate Bose metal phase intervening between these two states is a bosonic topological insulator. We point out that the correct treatment of a bosonic topological insulator requires a normally neglected, additional dimensionless parameter, which arises because of the non-commutativity between the infinite gap limit and phase space reduction. We show that the bosonic topological insulator is a functional first Landau level. The additional parameter drives two Berezinskii–Kosterlitz–Thouless (BKT) quantum transitions to superconducting and superinsulating phases, respectively. The two BKT correlation scales account for the emergent granularity observed around the transition. Finally, we derive the ground state wave function for a system of charges and vortices in the Bose metal phase.

We provide a microscopic-level derivation of earlier results showing that in the critical vicinity of the superconductor-to-insulator transition (SIT), disorder and localization become negligible and the structure of the emergent phases is determined by topological effects arising from the competition between two quantum orders, superconductivity and superinsulation. We find that around the critical point the ground state is a composite incompressible quantum fluid of Cooper pairs and vortices coexisting with an intertwined Wigner crystal comprising the excesses of both types of excitations with respect to integer filling.

Despite decades-long efforts, magnetic monopoles were never found as elementary particles. Monopoles and associated currents were directly measured in experiments and identified as topological quasiparticle excitations in emergent condensed matter systems. These monopoles and the related electric-magnetic symmetry were restricted to classical electrodynamics, with monopoles behaving as classical particles. Here we show that the electric-magnetic symmetry is most fundamental and extends to full quantum behavior. We demonstrate that at low temperatures magnetic monopoles can form a quantum Bose condensate dual to the charge Cooper pair condensate in superconductors. The monopole Bose condensate manifests as a superinsulating state with infinite resistance, dual to superconductivity. Monopole supercurrents result in the electric analog of the Meissner effect and lead to linear confinement of Cooper pairs by Polyakov electric strings in analogy to quarks in hadrons., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

A low-temperature intervening metallic regime arising in the two-dimensional superconductor-insulator transition challenges our understanding of electronic fluids. Here we develop a gauge theory revealing that this emergent anomalous metal is a bosonic topological insulator where bulk transport is suppressed by mutual statistics interactions between out-of-condensate Cooper pairs and vortices and the longitudinal conductivity is mediated by symmetry-protected gapless edge modes. We explore the magnetic-field-driven superconductor-insulator transition in a niobium titanium nitride device and find marked signatures of a bosonic topological insulator behavior of the intervening regime with the saturating resistance. The observed superconductor-anomalous metal and insulator-anomalous metal dual phase transitions exhibit quantum Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless criticality in accord with the gauge theory., 10 pages, 5 figures

An increasing amount of electric energy is consumed by computers as they progress in function and capabilities. All of it is dissipated in heat during the computing and communicating operations and we reached the point that further developments are hindered by the unbearable amount of heat produced. In this paper, we briefly review the fundamental limits in energy dissipation, as imposed by the laws of physics, with specific reference to computing and memory storage activities. Different from previous approaches, we will focus on the sole dynamics of the binary switches, the building blocks of the logic gates and digital memories, without invoking any direct connection to the notion of information.

The nature of hadrons is one of the most fundamental mysteries of physics. It is generally agreed that they are made of “colored” quarks, which move nearly free at short scales but are confined inside hadrons by strong interactions at large distances. Because of confinement, quarks are never directly observable and, experimentally, their properties can be tested only indirectly, via high energy collisions. Here we show that superinsulating films realize a complete, one-color model system of hadron physics with Cooper pairs playing the role of quarks. We report measurements on highly controlled NbTiN films that provide a window into the interior of "Cooper pair mesons" and present the first direct evidence of asymptotic freedom, ‘t Hooft’s dual superconductivity confinement mechanism, and magnetic monopoles. Quarks in the interior of hadrons make up most of ordinary matter, yet their observation is not possible, and their properties can only be probed indirectly. Adopting an analogy between physics of superinsulators and high energy physics, the authors present direct observations of the interior of electric mesons made of Cooper pairs by standard transport measurements.

We investigate the evolution of the electronic transport in disordered NbTiN films at the insulating side of the superconductor-insulator transition as function of the effective system size along the current direction. We demonstrate that both, the threshold voltage characterizing low-temperature superinsulating phase, and the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless criticality of the conductance above the superinsulator critical temperature, vanish upon increasing disorder taking the system far from the disorder-driven superconductor-insulator transition. We find that decrease in the system’s effective size suppresses its insulating and superinsulating properties and that threshold voltage drops linearly with the diminishing system size. We demonstrate that this linear dependence can be used for experimental measurement of the linear tension of the electric string binding Cooper pairs and anti-Cooper pairs in a superinsulator.

It has been believed that the superinsulating state which is the low-temperature charge Berezinskii-Kosterlitz- Thouless (BKT) phase can exist only in two dimensions. We develop a general gauge description of the su- perinsulating state and the related deconfinement transition of Cooper pairs and predict the existence of the superinsulating state in three dimensions (3d). We find that 3d superinsulators exhibit Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann (VFT) critical behavior at the phase transition. This is the 3d string analogue of the Berezinski-Kosterlitz- Thouless (BKT) criticality for logarithmically and linearly interacting point particles in 2d. In 1961, Rolf Landauer pointed out that resetting a binary memory requires a minimum energy of $k_BT \ln(2)$. However, once written, any memory is doomed to loose its content if no action is taken. To avoid memory losses, a refresh procedure is periodically performed. In this paper we present a theoretical model and an experiment on a micro-electro-mechanical system to evaluate the minimum energy required to preserve one bit of information over time. Two main conclusions are drawn: i) in principle the energetic cost to preserve information for a fixed time duration with a given error probability can be arbitrarily reduced if the refresh procedure is performed often enough; ii) the Heisenberg uncertainty principle sets an upper bound on the memory lifetime., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures

One of the most profound aspects of the standard model of particle physics, the mechanism of confinement binding quarks into hadrons, is not sufficiently understood. The only known semiclassical mechanism of confinement, mediated by chromo-electric strings in a condensate of magnetic monopoles still lacks experimental evidence. Here we show that the infinite resistance superinsulating state, which emerges on the insulating side of the superconductor-insulator transition in superconducting films offers a realization of confinement that allows for a direct experimental access. We find that superinsulators realize a single-color version of quantum chromodynamics and establish the mapping of quarks onto Cooper pairs. We reveal that the mechanism of superinsulation is the linear binding of Cooper pairs into neutral "mesons" by electric strings. Our findings offer a powerful laboratory for exploring and testing the fundamental implications of confinement, asymptotic freedom, and related quantum chromodynamics phenomena via desktop experiments on superconductors., Comment: Published version

We revisit the lattice formulation of the Abelian Chern-Simons model defined on an infinite Euclidean lattice. We point out that any gauge invariant, local and parity odd Abelian quadratic form exhibits, in addition to the zero eigenvalue associated with the gauge invariance and to the physical zero mode at p=0 due to traslational invariance, a set of extra zero eigenvalues inside the Brillouin zone. For the Abelian Chern-Simons theory, which is linear in the derivative, this proliferation of zero modes is reminiscent of the Nielsen-Ninomiya no-go theorem for fermions. Floppy membranes are tensionless surfaces without extrinsic stiffness, whose fluctuations are governed by fourth-order bending elasticity. We propose a new string model by adding a higher-order gradient term to the rigid string, so that the stiffness can be positive or negative without loosing stability. In the large-D approximation, the model has three phases, one of which with a new type of generalized "antiferromagnetic" orientational correlations. We find an infrared-stable fixed point describing world-sheets with vanishing tension and Hausdorff dimension D_H=2. We study phase transitions induced by topological defects in compact Abelian gauge theories of openp-branes in (d+1) space-time dimensions. Starting from a massive antisymmetric tensor theory for the open p-branes we show how the condensation of topological defects can lead to a decoupled phase with a massless tensor coupled to closed (p - 1)-branes and a massive tensor coupled to open (p + 1)-branes. We also consider the case, relevant in string theory, in which the boundaries of the p-branes are constrained to live on a Dirichlet n-brane.

We show that the zero-temperature physics of planar Josephson junction arrays in the self-dual approximation is governed by an Abelian gauge theory with periodic mixed Chern-Simons term describing the charge-vortex coupling. The periodicity requires the existence of (Euclidean) topological excitations which determine the quantum phase structure of the model. The electric-magnetic duality leads to a quantum phase transition between a superconductor and a superinsulator at the self-dual point. We also discuss in this framework the recently proposed quantum Hall phases for charges and vortices in presence of external offset charges and magnetic fluxes: we show how the periodicity of the charge-vortex coupling can lead to transitions to anyon superconductivity phases. We investigate the non-perturbative structure of two planar $Z_p \times Z_p$ lattice gauge models and discuss their relevance to two-dimensional condensed matter systems and Josephson junction arrays. Both models involve two compact U(1) gauge fields with Chern-Simons interactions, which break the symmetry down to $Z_p \times Z_p$. By identifying the relevant topological excitations (instantons) and their interactions we determine the phase structure of the models. Our results match observed quantum phase transitions in Josephson junction arrays and suggest also the possibility of {\it oblique confining ground states} corresponding to quantum Hall regimes for either charges or vortices., Comment: 32 pages, harvmac

In this paper we show that BF topological superconductors (insulators) exibit phase transitions between different topologically ordered phases characterized by different ground state degeneracy on manifold with non-trivial topology. These phase transitions are induced by the condensation (or lack of) of topological defects. We concentrate on the (2+1)-dimensional case where the BF model reduce to a mixed Chern-Simons term and we show that the superconducting phase has a ground state degeneracy $k$ and not $k^2$. When the symmetry is $U(1) \times U(1)$, namely when both gauge fields are compact, this model is not equivalent to the sum of two Chern-Simons term with opposite chirality, even if naively diagonalizable. This is due to the fact that U(1) symmetry requires an ultraviolet regularization that make the diagonalization impossible. This can be clearly seen using a lattice regularization, where the gauge fields become angular variables. We show that electrically and magnetically frustrated Josephson junction arrays (JJAs) realize topological order with a non-trivial ground state degeneracy on manifolds with non-trivial topology. The low-energy theory has the same gauge dynamics of the unfrustrated JJAs but for different, "fractional" degrees of freedom, a principle reminescent of Jain's composite electrons in the fractional quantum Hall effect., Comment: 5 pages; to appear in EPL

We propose a mechanism of superconductivity in which the order of the ground state does not arise from the usual Landau mechanism of spontaneous symmetry breaking but is rather of topological origin. The low-energy effective theory is formulated in terms of emerging gauge fields rather than a local order parameter and the ground state is degenerate on topologically non-trivial manifolds. In this review, we discuss the confining and finite-temperature properties of the 3D SU(N) Georgi-Glashow model, and of 4D compact QED. At zero temperature, we derive string representations of both theories, thus constructing the SU(N)-version of Polyakov's theory of confining strings. We discuss the geometric properties of confining strings, as well as the appearance of the string theta-term from the field-theoretical one in 4D, and k-string tensions at N larger than 2. In particular, we point out the relevance of negative stiffness for stabilizing confining strings, an effect recently re-discovered in material science. At finite temperature, we present a derivation of the confining-string free energy and show that, at the one-loop level and for a certain class of string models in the large-D limit, it matches that of QCD at large N. This crucial matching is again a consequence of the negative stiffness. We construct a lattice model of compact (2+1)-dimensional Maxwell-Chern- Simons theory, starting from its formulation in terms of gauge invariant quantities proposed by Deser and Jackiw. We thereby identify the topological excitations and their interactions. These consist of monopolo- antimonopole pairs bounded by strings carrying both magnetic flux and electric charge. The electric charge renders the Dirac strings observable and endows them with a finite energy per unit length, which results in a linearly confining string tension. We examine the possibility of fermion mass generation in 2+1- dimensional gauge theory from the current algebra point of view.In our approach the critical behavior is governed by the fluctuations of pions which are the Goldstone bosons for chiral symmetry breaking. We use the extension of the Jordan-Wigner transformation to planar systems to investigate the quantum frustrated {ital XY} model for spin 1/2 on a square lattice. We find that this model is mapped into the hopping Hamiltonian for a planar spinless electron in a transverse magnetic field. When we fix the frustration parameter to be a rational number such that the electron density is proportional to the total flux threading the plaquette, the model is equivalent to a {ital Z}{sub {ital N}} gauge theory of anyons. The {ital Z}{sub {ital N}} symmetry of the anyon theory implies a degeneracy 2{ital N} for the ground state of the model considered. Since we regard the frustration field as classical background, our approach has to be considered as a mean-field theory of the frustrated spin model. We briefly discuss the effect of quantum corrections to the ground-state degeneracy.
