Objective As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, the impact on neuropsychology trainees continues to evolve. This paper describes the results of a survey of neuropsychology trainee (graduate student through postdoctoral resident) perspectives on the COVID-19 pandemic and compares them to a previous survey conducted in Spring 2020. Method The survey used several questions from the 2020 survey and added applicable new questions based on the results of the 2020 survey. The survey was distributed to listservs, training directors, and student organizations in neuropsychology with snowball sampling used. Results Respondents were primarily female (82.4%) and white (63%). The majority of trainees (66%) reported loss of clinical hours. Interestingly, the average training time missed was approximately 3.36 weeks (SD = 9.27). Trainees continue to report that they have experienced increased anxiety, depression, and stress since the beginning of the pandemic; however, compared to a prior survey, rates of increased anxiety/stress remained stable, but more trainees reported increased depression. Approximately 31% of trainees reported that they were differentially impacted by the pandemic due to racial/ethnic background and female trainees were more likely to report increased personal stress, anxiety and depression than their male counterparts. Conclusions Results suggest continued wide-reaching pandemic related impacts on neuropsychology trainees. For example, trainees continue to be concerned about the impact of lost clinical hours on their professional futures. The most notable of the personal impacts included increased rates of mental health concerns and differential impacts on trainees from ethnoracial minority communities. Recommendations are provided to assist trainees in coping with pandemic-related disruptions.

The metabolome, which represents the complete set of molecules (metabolites) of a biological sample (cell, tissue, organ, organism), is the final downstream product of the metabolic cell process that involves the genome and exogenous sources. The metabolome is characterized by a large number of small molecules with a huge diversity of chemical structures and abundances. Exploring the metabolome requires complementary analytical platforms to reach its extensive coverage. The metabolome is continually evolving, reflecting the continuous flux of metabolic and signaling pathways. Metabolomic research aims to study the biochemical processes by detecting and quantifying metabolites to obtain a metabolic picture able to give a functional readout of the physiological state. Recent advances in mass spectrometry (one of the mostly used technologies for metabolomics studies) have given the opportunity to determine the spatial distribution of metabolites in tissues. In a two-part article, we describe the usual metabolomics technologies, workflows and strategies leading to the implementation of new clinical biomarkers. In this second part, we first develop the steps of a metabolomic analysis from sample collection to biomarker validation. Then with two examples, autism spectrum disorders and Alzheimer's disease, we illustrate the contributions of metabolomics to clinical practice. Finally, we discuss the complementarity of in vivo (positron emission tomography) and in vitro (metabolomics) molecular explorations for biomarker research.

This paper describes gender-related trends within clinical neuropsychology, based primarily on recurrent practice surveys within the specialty and, to a lesser extent, job-related information from medical specialties and the general U.S. labor market.Chronological and cross-sectional analyses of professional practice survey data from 2005, 2010, and 2015 relevant to gender. As is common with survey data, descriptive analysis and independent samples t-tests were conducted. Longitudinal data allowed for examination of gender trends, as well as observations of change and stability of factors associated with gender, over time.Women have become dominant in number in clinical neuropsychology, and also comprise a vast majority of practitioners entering the specialty. Gender differences are noted in professional identity, work status, work settings, types of career satisfaction, and retirement expectations. Women are more likely to identify work environment and personal/family obstacles to aspects of career satisfaction. A gender pay gap was found at all time points and is not narrowing. As is true nationally, multiple factors appear related to the gender pay gap in clinical neuropsychology.Women in neuropsychology are now dominant in number, and their presence is strongly associated with specific practice patterns, such as greater institutional employment, less involvement in forensic practice, and strong involvement in pediatric practice, which may be maintaining the sizeable gender pay gap in neuropsychology. As the proportion of women neuropsychologists continues to increase, flexible work hours, and alternative means of remuneration may be needed to offset current disproportionate family-related responsibilities.

There is a tremendous shift in public digital discourse and the academy more broadly, about the use of Latinx, one that may appear, on the surface, as an uncritical, hip way to shift how we talk about ourselves. While there is a long history of contestation about these categories of naming, my goal in this essay is to chart out the histories of how we went from using Mexican American and Puerto Rican to Chicano and Nuyorican and then the latest iterations, like Latina/o and eventually Latinx. By drawing on specific case studies of millennial digital cultures and the creation of new-phase ethnic studies departments in the 2000s, I demonstrate how millennials use Latinx to transcend gender, racial, class, and regional constraints they see emanating from boomer-generation ethno-nationalist formations. To be a part of the affective community represents a core value for millennials because it is antiessentialist because Latinx bears the load of recognition and diversity and represents the power of inclusion without speaking for everyone. Ultimately, Latinx can carry the excessive and diverse affective load of a population in ways that other ethno-nationalist and pan-Latina/o terms cannot.

Objective Attentional difficulties are known to negatively impact learning (Hervey et al., 2004; Alderson et al., 2013). This study builds upon previous work examining the effect of sustained visual attention as a moderator of age and learning (Thomas et al., 2019) by examining performance on an auditory attention measure as a moderator of the relationship between age and performance on a verbal list-learning task. Method Archival data from 424 adults (Mage = 36.01, SD = 15.13) were collected at an outpatient clinic. Auditory attention was assessed via the Brief Test of Attention (BTA) raw score. Learning was assessed via the California Verbal Learning Test (CVLT-II) total T-Score (Trials 1–5). Results Results of a hierarchical linear regression indicated a significant effect between BTA and learning, (β = 0.287, F(1, 422) = 17.993, p Conclusion Sustained attention has been shown to be an important consideration when assessing verbal learning and memory performance. Present results demonstrate that when accounting for age, auditory attention is a significant positive predictor of performance on measures of verbal learning. Additionally, confirming prior research, performances on auditory attention and verbal learning measures are positively correlated.
