1. Long-term monitoring (1953–2019) of geomorphologically active sections of Little Ice Age lateral moraines in the context of changing meteorological conditions

Abstract

We show a long-term erosion monitoring of several geomorphologically active gully systems on Little Ice Age lateral moraines in the European Central–Eastern Alps, covering a total time period from 1953 to 2019 and including several survey periods in order to identify corresponding morphodynamic trends. For the implementation, DEM (digital elevation model) of Differences (DoDs) were calculated, based on multitemporal high-resolution digital elevation models from historical aerial images (generated by structure from motion photogrammetry with multi-view stereo) and light detection and ranging from airborne platforms. Two approaches were implemented to achieve the corresponding objectives. First, by calculating linear regression models using the accumulated sediment yield and the corresponding catchment area (on a log–log scale), the range of the variability in the spatial distribution of erosion values within the sites. Second, we use volume calculations to determine the total and the mean sediment yield (as well as erosion rates) of the entire sites. Subsequently, both the sites and the different time periods of both approaches are compared. Based on the slopes of the calculated regression lines, it can be shown that the highest variability in the sediment yield at the sites occurs in the first time period (mainly 1950s to 1970s). This can be attributed to the fact that within some sites the sediment yield per square metre increases clearly more strongly (regression lines with slopes up to 1.5). In contrast, in the later time periods (1970s to mid-2000s and mid-2000s to 2017/2019), there is generally a decrease in 10 out of 12 cases (regression lines with slopes around 1). However, even at sites with an increase in the variability in the sediment yield over time, the earlier high variabilities are no longer reached. This means that the spatial pattern of erosion in the gully heads changes over time as it becomes more uniform. Furthermore, using sediment volume calculations and corresponding erosion rates, we show a generally decreasing trend in geomorphic activity (amount of sediment yield) between the different time periods in 10 out of 12 sites, while 2 sites show an opposite trend, where morphodynamics increase and remain at the same level. Finally, we summarise the results of long-term changes in the morphodynamics of geomorphologically active areas on lateral moraines by presenting the “sediment activity concept”, which, in contrast to theoretical models, is based on actually calculated erosion. The level of geomorphic activity depends strongly on the characteristics of the sites, such as size, slope length, and slope gradient, some of which are associated with deeply incised gullies. It is noticeable that especially areas with influence of dead ice over decades in the lower slope area show high geomorphic activity. Furthermore, we show that system internal factors, as well as the general paraglacial adjustment process, have a greater influence on long-term morphodynamics than changing external weather and climate conditions, which, however, had a slight impact mainly in the last, i.e. most recent, time period (mid-2000s to 2017/2019) and may have led to an increase in erosion at the sites.

Abstract

The effect of deep convection parameterisation on the jet stream above the cold front of an explosive extratropical cyclone is investigated in the global numerical weather prediction model ARPEGE, operational at Météo-France. Two hindcast simulations differing only in the deep convection scheme used are systematically compared with each other, with (re)analysis datasets and with NAWDEX airborne observations. The deep convection representation has an important effect on the vertical structure of the jet stream above the cold front at 1-d lead time. The simulation with the less active scheme shows a deeper jet stream, associated with a stronger potential vorticity (PV) gradient in the middle troposphere. This is due to a larger deepening of the dynamical tropopause on the cold air side of the jet and a higher PV destruction on the warm air side, near 600 hPa. To better understand the origin of this stronger PV gradient, Lagrangian backward trajectories are computed. On the cold air side of the jet, numerous trajectories undergo a rapid ascent from the boundary layer to the mid-levels in the simulation with the less active deep convection scheme, whereas they stay at mid-levels in the other simulation. This ascent explains the higher PV noted on that side of the jet in the simulation with the less active deep convection scheme. These ascending air masses form mid-level ice clouds that are not observed in the microphysical retrievals from airborne radar-lidar measurements. On the warm air side of the jet, in the warm conveyor belt ascending region, the Lagrangian trajectories with the less active deep convection scheme undergo a higher PV destruction due to a stronger heating occurring in the lower and middle troposphere. In contrast, in the simulation with the most active deep convection scheme, both the heating and PV destruction extend further up into the upper troposphere.

Abstract

The effect of parameterized deep convection on warm conveyor belt (WCB) activity and the jet stream is investigated by performing simulations of an explosively developing large-scale cyclone that occurred during the North Atlantic Waveguide and Downstream Impact Experiment (NAWDEX) field campaign using the Météo-France global atmospheric model ARPEGE. Three simulations differing only from their deep convection representation are analysed. The first one was performed with the Bougeault (1985) scheme (B85), the second one with the Prognostic Condensates Microphysics and Transport (PCMT) scheme of Piriou et al. (2007), and the third one without any parameterized deep convection. In the latter simulation, the release of convective instability at the resolved scales of the model generates localized cells marked by strong heating with few degrees extent in longitude and latitude along the fronts. In runs with active parameterized deep convection (B85, PCMT), the heating rate is more homogeneously distributed along fronts as the instability release happens at subgrid scales. This difference leads to more rapid and abrupt ascents in the WCB without parameterized deep convection and more moderate but more sustained ascents with parameterized deep convection. While the number of WCB trajectories does not differ much between the three simulations, the averaged heating rates over the WCB trajectories exhibits distinct behaviour. After 1 d of simulations, the upper-level heating rate is on average larger, with the B85 scheme leading to stronger potential vorticity (PV) destruction. The difference comes from the resolved sensible and latent heating and not the parameterized one. A comparison with (re)analyses and a large variety of airborne observations from the NAWDEX field campaign (Doppler radar, Doppler lidar, dropsondes) made during the coordinated flights of two aircraft in the WCB outflow region shows that B85 performs better in the representation of the double jet structure at 1 d lead time than the other two simulations. That can be attributed to the more active WCB at upper levels. However, this effect is too strong and that simulation becomes less realistic than the other ones at forecast ranges beyond 1.5 d. The simulation with the PCMT scheme has an intermediate behaviour between the one with the B85 scheme and without parameterized deep convection, but its impact on the jet stream is closer to the latter one. Finally, additional numerical experiments show that main differences in the impact on the jet between PCMT and B85 largely come from the chosen closure, with the former being based on CAPE and the latter on moisture convergence.

Abstract

Nowadays, point clouds are the standard product when capturing reality independent of scale and measurement technique. Especially, Dense Image Matching (DIM) and Laser Scanning (LS) are state of the art capturing methods for a great variety of applications producing detailed point clouds up to billions of points. In-depth analysis of such huge point clouds typically requires sophisticated spatial indexing structures to support potentially long-lasting automated non-interactive processing tasks like feature extraction, semantic labelling, surface generation, and the like. Nevertheless, a visual inspection of the point data is often necessary to obtain an impression of the scene, roughly check for completeness, quality, and outlier rates of the captured data in advance. Also intermediate processing results, containing additional per-point computed attributes, may require visual analyses to draw conclusions or to parameterize further processing. Over the last decades a variety of commercial, free, and open source viewers have been developed that can visualise huge point clouds and colorize them based on available attributes. However, they have either a poor loading and navigation performance, visualize only a subset of the points, or require the creation of spatial indexing structures in advance. In this paper, we evaluate a progressive method that is capable of rendering any point cloud that fits in GPU memory in real time without the need of time consuming hierarchical acceleration structure generation. In combination with our multi-threaded LAS and LAZ loaders, we achieve load performance of up to 20 million points per second, display points already while loading, support flexible switching between different attributes, and rendering up to one billion points with visually appealing navigation behaviour. Furthermore, loading times of different data sets for different open source and commercial software packages are analysed.

Abstract

A 15-year-old pony was presented for acute neurological signs. Neurological examination suggested a brainstem lesion, blood laboratory tests detected an active inflammatory process, and upper respiratory endoscopy identified a suppurative lesion at the dorsal aspect of the right guttural pouch. Computed tomography was performed and findings were consistent with pituitary abscess, meningitis, and atlanto-occipital joint septic arthritis. Imaging findings were confirmed based on cerebrospinal and synovial fluid cultures and necropsy. Computed tomography provided important information for identifying the cause of the patient's neurological signs and helped the owner make a final decision for euthanasia.

10. A general algorithm for computing bound states in infinite tight-binding systems

Abstract

We propose a robust and efficient algorithm for computing bound states of infinite tight-binding systems that are made up of a finite scattering region connected to semi-infinite leads. Our method uses wave matching in close analogy to the approaches used to obtain propagating states and scattering matrices. We show that our algorithm is robust in presence of slowly decaying bound states where a diagonalization of a finite system would fail. It also allows to calculate the bound states that can be present in the middle of a continuous spectrum. We apply our technique to quantum billiards and the following topological materials: Majorana states in 1D superconducting nanowires, edge states in the 2D quantum spin Hall phase, and Fermi arcs in 3D Weyl semimetals.

Abstract

Intermediate junctional epidermolysis bullosa caused by mutations in the COL17A1 gene is characterized by the frequent development of blisters and erosions on the skin and mucous membranes. The rarity of the disease and the heterogeneity of the underlying mutations renders therapy developments challenging. However, the high number of short in-frame exons facilitates the use of antisense oligonucleotides (AON) to restore collagen 17 (C17) expression by inducing exon skipping. In a personalized approach, we designed and tested three AONs in combination with a cationic liposomal carrier for their ability to induce skipping of COL17A1 exon 7 in 2D culture and in 3D skin equivalents. We show that AON-induced exon skipping excludes the targeted exon from pre-mRNA processing, which restores the reading frame, leading to the expression of a slightly truncated protein. Furthermore, the expression and correct deposition of C17 at the dermal–epidermal junction indicates its functionality. Thus, we assume AON-mediated exon skipping to be a promising tool for the treatment of junctional epidermolysis bullosa, particularly applicable in a personalized manner for rare genotypes.

18. PTPIP51: A New Interaction Partner of the Insulin Receptor and PKA in Adipose Tissue

Abstract

Aims. Our previous experiments revealed an association of PTPIP51 (protein tyrosine phosphatase interacting protein 51) with the insulin signalling pathway through PTP1B and 14-3-3beta. We aimed to clarify the role of PTPIP51 in adipocyte metabolism. Methods. Four groups of ten C57Bl/6 mice each were used. Two groups were fed a standard diet; two groups were fed a high-fat diet. Two groups (one high-fat diet and one standard diet) were submitted to endurance training, while the remaining two groups served as untrained control groups. After ten weeks, we measured glucose tolerance of the mice. Adipose tissue samples were analyzed by immunofluorescence and Duolink proximity ligation assay to quantify interactions of PTPIP51 with either insulin receptor (IR) or PKA. Results. PTPIP51 and the IR and PTPIP51 and PKA, respectively, were colocalized in all groups. Standard diet animals that were submitted to endurance training showed low PTPIP51-IR and PTPIP51-PKA interactions. The interaction levels of both the IR and PKA differed between the feeding and training groups. Conclusion. PTPIP51 might serve as a linking protein in adipocyte metabolism by connecting the IR-triggered lipogenesis with the PKA-dependent lipolysis. PTPIP51 interacts with both proteins, therefore being a potential gateway for the cooperation of both pathways.

19. [Treatment-process analysis of orthopaedic trauma surgery patients at an outpatient setting in a university hospital]

Abstract

The cost pressure in a competitive environment forces hospitals and physicians to optimize clinical processes. In order to secure competitive advantages, a continuous evaluation of relevant processes is necessary.Administrative and medical processes in a university outpatient department for orthopedics and traumatology were evaluated using the lean method in order to reduce patient waiting times.Over a period of 2 weeks all patients who were treated in the department for orthopedic and trauma surgery on an outpatient basis were included in the assessment of the process. Personnel in the policlinic were prepared and trained to record times for appointments made by telephone, arrival time at the hospital, first contact, administrative procedure, first contact with the doctor, length of stay in the radiology and anesthesiology departments and completion of treatment. In addition, potential inefficiencies were identified through patient flow analysis and personal interviews with personnel in the administration and outpatient departments as well as residents and senior physicians.A total of 126 patients were enrolled in the study. The average length of stay of patients in the outpatient clinic was 144 min (range 30-371 min). A necessary imaging examination increased the length of stay by an average of 53 min and a necessary premedication by an average of 78 min compared to patients with no further consultations.By analyzing the pathways and times of patients, various reasons for waiting times in the university outpatient clinic could be shown. This study shows that a structured application of lean management and a dedicated analysis create added value for patients by reducing waiting times.

Abstract

The operating room (OR) accounts for the highest fraction of hospital costs and also has the largest proportion of revenue. Classical goals of optimizing OR efficiency are to increase the quality of treatment and economic success. As the reduction of qualified personnel as the largest cost factor was favored for many years, nowadays a shortage of nursing personnel is threatening the surgery departments in many German hospitals.Which improvements are possible while the OR already suffers from restrictions? What are critical resources, what are the critical burdens and how can they be optimized?An analysis of the OR organization of an orthopedic and traumatology department with reduced OR capacity due to a shortage of OR and anesthesia nursing personnel was performed. This was followed by the evaluation of possible alterations with the corresponding advantages and disadvantages. After selection and implementation, the qualitative and quantitative differences were examined before and after the alterations.Multifaceted problem areas could be identified. The establishment of a fast track OR with concentration of additional resources on many fast points in an OR instead of on a few complex cases was selected and implemented. The installation of a holding area for patients waiting for surgery eliminated transportation delays almost entirely. Alterations in the OR planning and capacity distribution reduced nocturnal operating times. Despite reduction of the OR capacity both the number of operations performed and the incision to suture times could be increased.Optimization of the processes in the OR is possible and necessary, despite the lack of personnel. Even only a few structural changes can eliminate bottlenecks, resulting in qualitative and quantitative improvements.

Abstract

Formaldehyd stellt weltweit das am meisten verwendete Fixativ zur Konservierung anatomischer und pathologischer Präparate in der Human- und Veterinärmedizin dar. Die Einführung des rechtsverbindlichen Arbeitsplatzgrenzwerts (AGW) von 0,37 mg/m3 im Jahr 2015 erforderte umfangreiche Maßnahmen zur Reduktion hoher Expositionen. Am Anatomischen Institut der Universität Gießen wurden deshalb verschiedene organisatorische sowie lüftungs- und präparationstechnische Maßnahmen zur Reduktion erprobt und deren Erfolg durch messtechnische Bestimmung der inhalativen Exposition gegenüber Formaldehyd überprüft. Sehr erfolgreich konnte der AGW durch die Kombination einer Nachbehandlung der fixierten Präparate mit dem formaldehydbindenden Reagenz InfuTraceTM und modifizierter Luftführung unter Verwendung von Weitwurfdüsen über den Präpariertischen auch bei kritischen Präparationsschritten weit unterschritten werden. In diesem Beitrag werden die Effizienz der organisatorischen Maßnahmen diskutiert sowie die Konstruktion der Weitwurfdüsen und die optimierte präparative Nachbehandlung mit InfuTraceTM vorgestellt, die zur sicheren Einhaltung des AGW beitragen können.

Abstract

Background Cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas (cSCC) are the primary cause of premature deaths in patients suffering from the rare skin-fragility disorder recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (RDEB), which is in marked contrast to the rarely metastasizing nature of these carcinomas in the general population. This remarkable difference is attributed to the frequent development of chronic wounds caused by impaired skin integrity. However, the specific molecular and cellular changes to malignancy, and whether there are common players in different types of aggressive cSCCs, remain relatively undefined. Methods MiRNA expression profiling was performed across various cell types isolated from skin and cSCCs. Microarray results were confirmed by qPCR and by an optimized in situ hybridization protocol. Functional impact of overexpression or knock-out of a dysregulated miRNA was assessed in migration and 3D-spheroid assays. Sample-matched transcriptome data was generated to support the identification of disease relevant miRNA targets. Results Several miRNAs were identified as dysregulated in cSCCs compared to control skin. These included the metastasis-linked miR-10b, which was significantly upregulated in primary cell cultures and in archival biopsies. At the functional level, overexpression of miR-10b conferred the stem cell-characteristic of 3D-spheroid formation capacity to keratinocytes. Analysis of miR-10b downstream effects identified a novel putative target of miR-10b, the actin- and tubulin cytoskeleton-associated protein DIAPH2. Conclusion The discovery that miR-10b mediates an aspect of cancer stemness – that of enhanced tumor cell adhesion, known to facilitate metastatic colonization – provides an important avenue for future development of novel therapies targeting this metastasis-linked miRNA.

Abstract

Generalized severe epidermolysis bullosa simplex (EBS-gen sev) is caused by mutations within either the KRT5 or KRT14 gene, phenotypically resulting in blistering and wounding of the skin and mucous membranes after minor mechanical friction. In a clinical phase 2/3 trial, diacerein has recently been shown to significantly reduce blister numbers upon topical application. In this study we addressed basic pharmacokinetic parameters of locally applied diacerein in vitro and in vivo. Ex vivo experiments using a Franz diffusion cell confirmed the uptake and bio-transformation of diacerein to rhein in a porcine skin model. Rhein, the active metabolite of diacerein, was also detected in both urine and serum samples of two EBS-gen sev patients who topically applied a 1% diacerein ointment over a period of 4 weeks. The accumulated systemic levels of rhein in EBS-gen sev patients were lower than reported levels after oral application. These preliminary findings point towards the uptake and prolonged persistance of diacerein / rhein within the intended target organ - the skin. Abstract

One of the promising platforms for creating Majorana bound states is a hybrid nanostructure consisting of a semiconducting nanowire covered by a superconductor. We analyze the previously disregarded role of electrostatic interaction in these devices. Our main result is that Coulomb interaction causes the chemical potential to respond to an applied magnetic field, while spin–orbit interaction and screening by the superconducting lead suppress this response. Consequently, the electrostatic environment influences two properties of Majorana devices: the shape of the topological phase boundary and the oscillations of the Majorana splitting energy. We demonstrate that both properties show a non-universal behavior, and depend on the details of the electrostatic environment. We show that when the wire only contains a single electron mode, the experimentally accessible inverse self-capacitance of this mode fully captures the interplay between electrostatics and Zeeman field. This offers a way to compare theoretical predictions with experiments.

Abstract

This paper presents results of an all-sky search for periodic gravitational waves in the frequency range [50, 1 190] Hzand and with frequency derivative range of approx. [-20,1.1] x 10(exp-10) H(sub 0)z s(exp-1) for the fifth LIGO science run (S5). The search uses a noncoherent Hough-transform method to combine the information from coherent searches on time scales of about one day. Because these searches are very computationally intensive, they have been carried out with the Einstein@Home volunteer distributed computing project. Postprocessing identifies eight candidate signals; deeper follow-up studies rule them out. Hence, since no gravitational wave signals have been found, we report upper limits on the intrinsic gravitational wave strain amplitude ho. For example, in the 0.5 Hz-wide band at 152.5 Hz, we can exclude the presence of signals with h(exp 0) greater than 7.6 x 10(exp-25) at a 90% confidence level. This search is about a factor 3 more sensitive than the previous Einstein@Home search of early S5 LIGO data.

Abstract

For the time being African philosophy is treated regularly in research and in teaching at two European scientific institutions: at the University of Vienna and at Erasmus University Rotterdam. In October 1993 there have been held two conferences of Western and African philosophers at both universities. Eleven African and nine Western scholars participated as speakers in these conferences. Four African speakers gave lectures at the Vienna and at the Rotterdam conference. The Vienna conference dealt with general questions of postcolonial philosophy in Africa. The conference at Rotterdam focused on the processes of democratization in African countries since 1989. This volume contains the papers of both conferences.En ce moment la philosophie Africaine est traité regulièrement dans les recherches et dans l'enseignement à deux instituts scientifiques Européens: à l'Université de Vienne et à l'Université Erasme de Rotterdam. En Octobre 1993 deux conférences de philosophes Occidentals et Africains ont été organisé aux deux universités. Onze savants Africans et neuf savants Occidentals ont participé à ces deux conférences. Quatre savants Africains ont présenté des communications à tous les deux conférences de Vienne et de Rotterdam. La conférence Viennoise s'occupait de questions générales de la philosophie postcoloniale en Afrique. La conférence de Rotterdam focusait aux procès de démocratisation dans des pays africains depuis 1989. Se trouvent en ce volume les contributions à les deux conférences.

Abstract

BackgroundCutaneous squamous cell carcinomas (cSCC) are the primary cause of premature deaths in patients suffering from the rare skin-fragility disorder recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa, which is in marked contrast to the rarely metastasizing nature of these carcinomas in the general population. This remarkable difference is attributed to the frequent development of chronic wounds caused by an impaired skin integrity. However, the specific molecular and cellular changes to malignancy, and whether there are common players in different types of aggressive cSCCs, remain relatively undefined.MethodsMiRNA expression profiling was performed across various cell types isolated from skin and cSCCs. Microarray results were confirmed by qPCR and by an optimized in situ hybridization protocol. Functional impact of overexpression of a dysregulated miRNA was assessed in migration and 3D spheroid assays. Sample-matched transcriptome data was generated to support the identification of disease relevant miRNA targets.ResultsSeveral miRNAs were identified as dysregulated in cSCCs as compared to controls. These included the metastasis-linked miR-10b, which was significantly upregulated in primary cell cultures and in archival biopsies. At the functional level, overexpression of miR-10b conferred the stem cell-characteristic of 3D-spheroid formation capacity to keratinocytes, and impaired their mobility. Analysis of miR-10b downstream effects identified a novel putative target of miR-10b, the actin- and tubulin cytoskeleton-associated protein DIAPH2.ConclusionThe discovery that miR-10b confers an aspect of cancer stemness – that of enhanced tumor cell adhesion, known to facilitate metastatic colonization - provides an important avenue for future development of novel therapies targeting this metastasis-linked miRNA.

Abstract

The recent commercialization of electronic memories based on phase change materials proved the usability of this peculiar family of materials for application purposes. More advanced data storage and computing concepts, however, demand a deeper understanding especially of the electrical properties of the amorphous phase and the switching behaviour. In this work, we investigate the temporal evolution of the current through the amorphous state of the prototypical phase change material, Ge _2 Sb _2 Te _5 , under constant voltage. A custom-made electrical tester allows the measurement of delay times over five orders of magnitude, as well as the transient states of electrical excitation prior to the actual threshold switching. We recognize a continuous current increase over time prior to the actual threshold-switching event to be a good measure for the electrical excitation. A clear correlation between a significant rise in pre-switching-current and the later occurrence of threshold switching can be observed. This way, we found experimental evidence for the existence of an absolute minimum for the threshold voltage (or electric field respectively) holding also for time scales far beyond the measurement range.

Abstract

We show that weak antilocalization by disorder competes with resonant Andreev reflection from a Majorana zero mode to produce a zero-voltage conductance peak of order e ^2 / h in a superconducting nanowire. The phase conjugation needed for quantum interference to survive a disorder average is provided by particle–hole symmetry—in the absence of time-reversal symmetry and without requiring a topologically nontrivial phase. We identify methods of distinguishing the Majorana resonance from the weak antilocalization effect.

Abstract

Introduction: Antibody treatment with anti-thymocyte globulin (ATG) has been shown to be cardioprotective. We aimed to evaluate which single anti-T-cell epitope antibody alters chemokine expression at a level similar to ATG and identified CD3, which is a T-cell co-receptor mediating T-cell activation. Based on these results, the effects of anti-CD3 antibody treatment on angiogenesis and cardioprotection were tested in vitro and in vivo. Methods: Concentrations of IL-8 and MCP-1 in supernatants of human peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) cultures following distinct antibody treatments were evaluated by Enzyme-linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA). In vivo, anti-CD3 antibodies or vehicle were injected intravenously in rats subjected to acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Chemotaxis and angiogenesis were evaluated using tube and migration assays. Intracellular pathways were assessed using Western blot. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) were quantitatively evaluated using fluorescence-activated cell scanning, exoELISA, and nanoparticle tracking analysis. Also, microRNA profiles were determined by next-generation sequencing. Results: Only PBMC stimulation with anti-CD3 antibody led to IL-8 and MCP-1 changes in secretion, similar to ATG. In a rat model of AMI, systemic treatment with an anti-CD3 antibody markedly reduced infarct scar size (27.8% (Inter-quartile range, IQR 16.2&ndash, 34.9) vs. 12.6% (IQR 8.3&ndash, 27.2), p &lt, 0.01). The secretomes of anti-CD3 treated PBMC neither induced cardioprotective pathways in cardiomyocytes nor pro-angiogenic mechanisms in human umbilical vein endothelial cell (HUVECs) in vitro. While EVs quantities remained unchanged, PBMC incubation with an anti-CD3 antibody led to alterations in EVs miRNA expression. Conclusion: Treatment with an anti-CD3 antibody led to decreased scar size in a rat model of AMI. Whereas cardioprotective and pro-angiogenetic pathways were unaltered by anti-CD3 treatment, qualitative changes in the EVs miRNA expression could be observed, which might be causal for the observed cardioprotective phenotype. We provide evidence that EVs are a potential cardioprotective treatment target. Our findings will also provide the basis for a more detailed analysis of putatively relevant miRNA candidates.

Abstract

The interface between solid-phase crystallized phosphorous-doped polycrystalline silicon (poly-Si(n+)) and aluminum-doped zinc oxide (ZnO:Al) was investigated using spatially resolved photoelectron emission microscopy. We find the accumulation of aluminum in the proximity of the interface. Based on a detailed photoemission line analysis, we also suggest the formation of an interface species. Silicon suboxide and/or dehydrated hemimorphite have been identified as likely candidates. For each scenario a detailed chemical reaction pathway is suggested. The chemical instability of the poly-Si(n+)/ZnO:Al interface is explained by the fact that SiO2 is more stable than ZnO and/or that H2 is released from the initially deposited a-Si:H during the crystallization process. As a result, Zn (a deep acceptor in silicon) is “liberated” close to the silicon/zinc oxide interface presenting the inherent risk of forming deep defects in the silicon absorber. These could act as recombination centers and thus limit the performance of silicon/zinc oxide based solar cells. Based on this insight some recommendations with respect to solar cell design, material selection, and process parameters are given for further knowledge-based thin-film silicon device optimization.

Abstract

As environmental changes such as eutrophication lead to increased size and frequency of cyanobacterial blooms, research into the toxins produced by these blooms becomes increasingly important. One of the common toxins produced by cyanobacterial blooms is cylindrospermopsin ( 1 ), a potent inhibitor of protein synthesis. To date, only two additional analogs of cylindrospermopsin have been isolated, namely 7-epicylindrospermopsin ( 2 ) and 7-deoxy-cylindrospermopsin ( 3 ). This report details the isolation and structure determination of an additional two new analogs, 7-deoxy-desulfo-cylindrospermopsin ( 4 ) and 7-deoxy-desulfo-12-acetylcylindrospermopsin ( 5 ). These are the first new analogs of cylindrospermopsin to be reported in over a decade. Based on their structural features, it is likely that these new analogs also possess the harmful biological activities displayed by the rest of the cylindrospermopsin family.

Abstract

Zinc oxide is widely used as transparent contact in thin film solar cells. We investigate the damp heat stability of aluminum doped ZnO (ZnO:Al) films sputter deposited at different conditions. Increase in resistivity upon damp heat exposure was observed for as-deposited ZnO:Al films and the water penetration was directly linked to this degradation. Deuterium was used as isotopic marker to identify the amount of water taken up by the films. Finally, we applied a special annealing step to prepare highly stable ZnO:Al films with charge carrier mobility of 70 cm 2 /Vs after 1000 h of damp heat treatment. A grain boundary reconstruction model is proposed to explain the high stability of ZnO:Al films after annealing.

Abstract

The chemical and electronic properties of a-Si:H(B)/ZnO:Al and μc- Si:H(B)/ZnO:Al thin-film solar cell structures are studied by hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES). Using a combination of different X-ray excitation energies and deliberate sample design, we were able to select the probed volume, i.e., the silicon capping layer only or the silicon and zinc oxide layer (including the buried interface). For the a-Si:H(B) material, we find a higher deposition rate and a smaller value for the modified Auger parameter than for μc-Si:H(B). In addition, we find indications of a pronounced band bending limited to the very surface of the a-Si:H(B) and the μc-Si:H(B) layers, which is more distinct in the latter case.

Abstract

Thermal post deposition treatments are applied to DC-sputtered aluminum-doped zinc oxide (ZnO:Al) films and lead to a significant improvement of the electrical properties. Protective layers of amorphous silicon are used to protect the films from degradation during the high temperature treatment. Annealing for 6 hours at 500 °C leads to a carrier mobility of 48 cm 2 /Vs at a carrier concentration of 5.5 · 10 20 cm − 3 . Furthermore, improvements in the optical as well as in the electrical properties are possible at the same time compared to the as-deposited film. This is achieved by carrying out two thermal treatments to the ZnO:Al film, one prior to the capping with the protective layer and one afterwards. A series of samples with different carrier concentrations allows us to draw conclusions on the specific electrical transport properties.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Rupture of distal biceps tendon often occurs in physical active male persons between 30 and 50 years. The standard treatment consists of operative refixation of the ruptured tendon stump. In literature there are various methods described. Due to the high expectations of this group of patients, we examined the sports ability after 1 year follow-up and describe our employed operative fixation technique. MATERIAL: Between 2004 and 2008 we treated 20 male persons in a prospective study with distal biceps tendon rupture. Applying the score of Rattanen and Orawa we evaluated the M. biceps force in flexion and supination and changes in the patients' sports activity. Furthermore we documented complications and the anchor localization via x-ray. RESULTS: The score results varied between excellent in 14 patients and good and fair in 3 cases respectively. Using only 1 suture anchor (3 patients), either a knot or a wire failure appeared within 5 days. Anchor malpositions were discovered in 2 patients. The force measurement showed threetimes minor but in 3 patients major force deficits. Lack of extension or supination movement could be stated in 3 cases. Changes in their sports ability reported 8 persons. Of the remaining 12 patients, the original sports level was reached after 9 months. CONCLUSION: Two anchors proved to guarantee a stable fixation of the distal biceps tendon stump. On the contrary we see the danger of fixation failure in using only 1 anchor. The best results achieved patients with a primer stable and correct located anchoring, therefore we recommend two anchors placed under radiological control. Regarding the score results, fixation of the distal biceps tendon is a demanding procedure, that should be performed by experienced surgeon.

Abstract

We have grown epitaxial grain boundaries of CuGaSe2 by metal organic vapour phase epitaxy onto a GaAs substrate containing a Σ3 grain boundary. SEM micrographs show a dense grain boundary. TEM micrographs prove that the grain boundary in the film is the direct continuation of the grain boundary in the substrate. HRTEM shows that the grain boundary in the film is a twin as well and thus a Σ3 boundary. Thus, by using a Σ3 grain boundary in the cubic GaAs substrate as a template a Σ3 grain boundary is obtained in the tetragonal CuGaSe2 film. Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy gives no indication of a space charge around this grain boundary, while in Hall measurements a small barrier of a few 10 meV is evident. This is an experimental indication for the existence of neutral grain boundaries as predicted theoretically.

Abstract

Chemische Schadstoffe weisen ein betrachtliches Gefahrdungspotenzial fur die Gewasser und durch deren Nutzung auch fur den Menschen auf. Zum Schutz der aquatischen Umwelt vor Beeintrachtigungen durch chemische Schadstoffe sieht das osterreichische Wasserrechtsgesetz (WRG) daher in Umsetzung der Vorgaben der Europaischen Wasserrahmenrichtlinie unter anderem die Festlegung von Umweltzielen in Form okotoxikologisch abgeleiteter Umweltqualitatsnormen vor. Diese Festlegung erfolgte vor kurzem mit dem Inkrafttreten der Qualitatszielverordnung Chemie Oberflachengewasser (BGBI. II Nr. 60/2006). Das Konzept der Ableitung von Umwelt qualitatsnormen sowie der Inhalt der Qualitatszielverordnung werden im vorliegenden Artikel uberblicksweise dargestellt.

Abstract

Experimental results on incompressible viscous flows in the gap between rotating spheroids are presented. Oblate ellipsoids are discussed as a connecting link between a sphere and a disk, while a prolate ellipsoid represents the geometrical intermediate stage between a sphere and a cylinder. The axes ratios of the ellipsoids are A : B=2 : 1 and A : B=1 : 2, respectively. The basic flow field and the occurring instabilities in form of Taylor- and cross-flow vortices have been studied by flow visualization. The common properties and their differences regarding the various flow patterns of the disks, spheres, cylinders as well as of the oblate and prolate ellipsoids are treated. The location of the generation of the different vortex systems at the various rotating bodies is determined. A comparison of the friction torque for these bodies of rotation is given by diagrams. Finally, the theoretically derived curves for the friction torque of the disks, spheres and cylinders are compared with the experimentally obtained data for the oblate and prolate ellipsoids.

49. Klinische Präsentation und Prognose von Hirnstamminfarkten

Abstract

Angesichts der vielfaltigen klinischen Klassifikationssysteme und Syndrome fehlt bislang ein reprasentativer Uberblick uber Atiologie und Prognose von Hirnstamminfarkten. Aus der Deutschen Schlaganfall-Datenbank untersuchten wir daher 455 Patienten mit bildmorphologisch nachgewiesenem, akuten Hirnstamminfarkt im Vergleich zu Patienten mit anderer Infarktlokalisation. Durch Nachbefragung der Patienten nach 3 und 12 Monaten wurden auserdem das funktionelle Ergebnis sowie die Reinsultrate erhoben. Von 455 Patienten mit Hirnstamminfarkt hatten 115 noch weitere akute Infarkte in anderen Gefasterritorien. Von den ubrigen 340 Patienten mit isoliertem Hirnstamminfarkt wurde bei 36,2% eine Mikroangiopathie, bei 22,6% eine Makroangiopathie und bei 11,2% eine kardiale Embolie als Ursache diagnostiziert. Insgesamt waren nach 3 Monaten 10% der Patienten mit isoliertem Hirnstamminfarkt verstorben und 55,6% wieder funktionell unabhangig, wahrend Patienten mit kombiniertem Hirnstamminfarkt eine deutlich hohere Mortalitat von 43,5% aufwiesen. Unsere Studie zeigt die Haufigkeit von mikroangiopathischen Ursachen sowie die relativ gute Prognose bei isoliertem Hirnstamminfarkt und erhaltenem Bewusstsein.
