To manage their increasingly ambitious environmental agendas successfully, companies need better and more versatile data, yet the elements and mechanisms through which businesses and the environment benefit from data remain poorly understood. A single-case-study setting was designed for examining the perceived value of data for environmental sustainability as seen by the customers of a tissue-paper supplier. The findings, from material collected during interviews with customers in 2022, showcase the multifaceted nature of data's value for business operations and associated ability to support decisions and activities that encourage environment-informed choices and environmental improvements. Also, fully exploiting data's potential for environmental sustainability requires greater volume and detail of product-specific data, transparency of value chains and environmental impacts, and data's better management and sharing. The emerging insight related to the value of data strengthens understanding of how companiescould, with data, support their customers' environmental performance.

Purpose: A systematic review of the literature on circular business models was performed, for synthesis of what it reveals about the role and value of data in those models. The increasing quantity of supply-chain and life-cycle data available has potential to be a significant driver of circular business models. The paper describes the current state of knowledge and identifies avenues for further research related to use of various forms of data in the models. Design: A systematic review of literature on the use of data in circular business models was carried out, to inform understanding of the state of knowledge and provide a firm foundation for further research. Findings: The literature reviewed points to fragmented understanding of the role and value of data in circular business models. Nonetheless, scholars and practitioners commonly see data as a driver and enabler of circular economy. The article identifies two distinct approaches to value for data as presented in the corpus and discusses what types of data seem to be valuable in a circular business-model context. Among the further research opportunities are work on data as a source of business-model innovation and on collaboration in capturing the value of data in circular business models. Value: The study provides new insight on the nexus of circular business models and data, and it represents one of the first comprehensive reviews addressing data’s value in a networked circular-economy context

The study assesses to what extent the production and use of advanced sustainable jet fuel may contribute to GHG reduction and mitigation, and identifies the commercial potential for initiating and scaling up advanced sustainable jet fuel production at a Nordic level. The report explores as well on how to most efficiently use the available Nordic know-how, feedstock and production facilities. The report draws on the latest available reports and statistics, as well as interviews with stakeholders and experts across the Nordic countries, concludes on identifying the most matured technologies, the Nordic opportunities and challenges, and ideas to mitigate the barriers within the Nordic private and public sectors.

The objectives of this study were to identify the innovation-oriented challenges as well as areas with high growth potential within the Nordic bioeconomy. The study produced background data concerning the volume and constituents of bioeconomy in the Nordic countries using NACE codes. According to the estimate, the total turnover of the key bioeconomy sectors in Nordic countries is roughly 184 000 M€, this is 10% of the total economy. Key findings from the business ecosystem analysis show that market access is the key step to successful bioeconomy innovation, along with end user involvement and utilization of existing infrastructure. Areas within bio-based chemicals, biomaterials, biofules and bioenergy, biorefineries, resource-efficiency and industrial symbiosis and services based on ecosystem services havehigh innovation and growth potential of bioeconomy. The obstacles of innovation in Nordic bioeconomy are lack of capital and funding, unstable operating environment due to changing regulation, market access and lack of number of actors involved in the ecosystems. Areas for further development to better tackle the identified obstacles include networking and developing a common understanding of the roles of different stakeholders, making processes for seeking support and financing easier for SMEs and promoting cross-sector transfer of existing or new applications for existing processes. Venture capitalists should be included in the networks to ensure they are better able to recognize the potential of commercial viable bioeconomy concepts. More focus may also be needed to link the support to finding commercially viable applications with the markets and customers.

Sähkön ympäristömerkintää on esitetty erääksi uudeksi keinoksi kehittää sähköntuotannon ympäristöystävällisyyttä. Tähänastisilla keinoilla, normiohjauksella ja vapaaehtoistoimilla, on saavutettu hyviä tuloksia varsinkin hiukkas- ja rikkidioksidipäästöjen vähentämisessä, mutta ympäristömerkinnän toivotaan soveltuvissa tilanteissa täydentävän niitä tehokkaasti. Ympäristömerkinnän tavoitteena on antaa kuluttajille keino vaikuttaa suoraan tuotantoratkaisuihin. Tarkoituksenmukaisen luokittelun toteuttaminen edellyttää kuitenkin useiden ongelmien ratkaisemista. Jos luokittelun halutaan vaikuttavan suureen osaan sähköntuotannosta, on sekä tulosten hyödyllisyyden että oikeudenmukaisen kilpailun kannalta olennaista saada luokittelu harhattomaksi, ts. luokittelussa paremmaksi todetun tuotannon on todella oltava huonommaksi luokiteltua parempaa. Eri sähköntuotantomuotojen haitat ovat kuitenkin hyvin erilaisia. Tärkeimpiin ympäristövaikutuksiin kuuluvat ainakin luonnonvarojen ehtyminen, ilmastovaikutukset, päästöjen ekologiset vaikutukset sekä vaikutukset ihmisten terveyteen. Näin erilaisten ympäristövaikutusten keskinäisten painoarvojen määrittämisestä lienee mahdotonta saavuttaa yksimielisyyttä. Tämä vaikeuttaa olennaisesti ympäristöluokittelua, sillä eri sähköntuotantomuotojen tärkeimmät vaikutukset painottuvat eri tavoin näihin tekijöihin. Ongelmat muodostuvat vielä suuremmiksi, jos huomioon pyritään ottamaan muutkin kestävän kehityksen osa-alueet eli yhteiskunnalliset ja taloudelliset näkökohdat. Yhtenäisen ympäristöluokittelun ongelmana on myös sen vähäinen vaikuttavuus tilanteessa, jossa luokitellun sähkön kysyntä ei ole laajaa. Vaihtoehtoinen toimintamalli on käyttää luokittelun pohjana nimettyjä tuotantomuotoja, ts. vihreän sähkön tai ekosähkön sijaan luokitellaan tuulivoimaa, biokaasuvoimaa jne. Luokittelu voi koskea paitsi tuotantomuotoa kokonaisuutena, myös sen toteutustasoa. Täten luokittelu voidaan toteuttaa erikseen kullekin nykyiselle ja uudelle tuotantomuodolle antamalla paras luokitus parasta käytettävissä olevaa tekniikkaa soveltaville laitoksille. Näin toteutetut eri tuotantomuotojen luokittelut eivät ole suoraan verrattavissa toisiinsa, mutta samalla vältetään suuri osa yleisemmän luokittelun ongelmista. Luokittelussa voidaan joutua ottamaan huomioon myös järjestelmäkysymyksiä, kuten sähkönkulutuksen ja -tuotannon keskinäiseen ajoittumiseen sekä luotettavuuteen, sähkön laatuun ja sähköturvallisuuteen liittyviä näkökohtia.

Among the further research opportunities are work on collaboration in capturing the value of data in circular business models and on data as a source of business-model innovation. Value: The work provides new insight on transforming data-driven value creation into good business and represents one of the first comprehensive reviews addressing data’s value in a networked circular-economy context.
