Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship of masculine eating/drinking beliefs on male consumers’ concern with unhealthy eating/drinking habits and, in turn, with binge drinking. Additionally, this research tests if and how a change in these beliefs influences binge drinking intention and intention to eat unhealthy food. Design/methodology/approach Three studies were conducted in Bogotá (Colombian males; convenience sampling). The purpose of Study 1 (N = 209) was to develop a scale to measure masculine eating/drinking beliefs. Study 2 (N = 191) tested the mediating role of concern with unhealthy eating/drinking habits in the relationship of masculine eating/drinking beliefs with binge drinking. Study 3 (N = 179) was an experimental study, which examined the effect of information about some negative consequences of masculine beliefs on the answers to the masculine eating/drinking beliefs inventory and, in turn, on binge drinking intention and intention to eat unhealthy food. Findings A one-dimensional (eight-items) scale was developed and validated. The results of this paper show that masculine eating/drinking beliefs are associated with lower concern with unhealthy eating/drinking and, in turn, with higher binge drinking. Information that influences these beliefs leads to lower binge drinking and unhealthy food ingestion intentions. Research limitations/implications This research presents the first scale that measures masculine eating/drinking beliefs. It provides initial evidence on how an intervention focused on the negative consequences of sexism can influence these beliefs, affecting binge drinking and overeating intentions. Practical implications This research provides new findings on a topic associated with several health problems in many countries, including the effect on consumers’ weight gaining and related illnesses. Originality/value This research presents the first scale that measures masculine eating/drinking beliefs. It provides initial evidence about factors (through mediating variables) that link masculine eating/drinking beliefs with some unhealthy eating/drinking habits. In addition, the results show how information about some negative consequences of these beliefs can influence consumers’ binge drinking and unhealthy food ingestion intentions, which leads to key recommendations for future interventions. As a result, this research provides new findings on a topic associated with several health problems in many countries, including the effect on consumers’ weight gaining and related illnesses.

PurposeAcademics recently identified a lack of research regarding who should guide interactions in virtual social networks when risks appear. Data shows that organizers are usually less active than other users in this context, which can lead to negative reactions among attendees. This research examines if and how virtual social network communication guided by an official source (vs a nonofficial source vs control group) reduces perceived crime risks and trust before the event, leading to lower ambivalence and higher intention to attend. The study was conducted in Colombia, a country where many individuals face this type of risk.Design/methodology/approachFirst-year university students (N = 210) from Colombia were invited to a “Welcome Cocktail”. Two weeks before the cocktail, they were divided into three groups (70 per condition) to receive information. In Group 1, participants were invited to be part of a WhatsApp group administered by one of the organizers. In Group 2, they participated in a WhatsApp group administered by a student. Group 3 was the control (i.e. no virtual communication established before the event). One week after the meeting, they were gathered again and answered a questionnaire, which measured perceived crime risk, trust, ambivalence and intention to attend.FindingsParticipants in the WhatsApp group administered by an official source perceived lower risk and higher trust in the organizers, which led to lower ambivalence towards the event and higher intention to attend it. The relationship between ambivalence and intention to attend is moderated by the nationality of the participants (locals vs foreigners), such as, at equal levels of ambivalence, foreigners show lower intention to attend the event.Originality/valueThis is the first study that compares different approaches on a virtual social network to reduce perceived crime risk in event management. The results present new findings on how the presence of an official source can mitigate this risk, and which potential attendees (i.e. locals vs foreigners) are especially benefited from it. The findings are particularly useful for managers in regions where attendees face crime risks every day, and might feel low trust towards public and private institutions, such as in Colombia.

The multi disciplinary nature of research on yachting leads to a need for a synthesis of prior findings. To fill this gap, this paper presents a systematic review of the literature. Although the search conducted uses terms such as sailboat and cruising, the study focuses on yachting, including both ownership or chartering. The review provides first a descriptive view of the fields, journal outlets, authors, and years of publications. Next, the study shows four mainstreams identified, namely,(1) innovation, (2) consumer experience (3) sustainability, and (4) yacht-related events. Based on the description of prior findings, future research needs are identified

El objetivo de esta investigación fue identificar los elementos discursivos a través de los cuales un grupo de mujeres adultas construye el concepto de maternidad, considerando sus efectos normativos y cómo se mantienen. La selección de las participantes se basó en un criterio de conveniencia, todas mujeres en un rango de edad entre 23 y 37 años y el nivel educativo igual o superior a licenciatura; También se consideró si tenían hijos o no. Los datos se recopilaron a través de grupos focales. Todas las entrevistas fueron grabadas, transcritas y analizadas, utilizando el enfoque de análisis de repertorios interpretativos como base teórica y metodológica. Se identificaron tres modelos de maternidad: hegemónica, moderna y maternidad como opción. En cuanto a las prácticas discursivas, se identifican un total de 9, de las cuales 3 se utilizan cuando se habla del modelo hegemónico y las 6 restantes con otros modelos.

Object recognition by robots is commonly based on shape, texture, and stiffness. A few approaches that involve the use of different sensors have been followed to estimate the stiffness. Since tactile sensors register the force distribution along the contact surface and are commonly required in manipulative tasks, it would be desirable to obtain as much information as possible from them. Specifically, the raw moments of the tactile image provided by a tactile sensor can be used as descriptors to classify deformable objects that are squeezed by a gripper or artificial hand. The provided moments are used as inputs of a classifier. A smart tactile sensor with electronics based on an FPGA can implement the circuitry to compute the moments at a high rate. This reduces the workload of a central processor as well as the traffic through the communication buses, and allows real time operation. This paper shows experiments where a set of objects are classified with this procedure and a smart sensor. Two nearest neighbor classifiers, one non-supervised and the other supervised, are applied and an 86.7% accuracy is achieved.

En la presente investigación se examinan las variables que motivan la Intensidad de Uso de las Redes Sociales por parte del consumidor turístico de la Generación Y. Existen dos motivos principales por los que este perfil de turistas utiliza las redes sociales: (1) para obtener información antes y durante sus vacaciones; y (2) para crear contenido en la red, durante y después de sus vacaciones. En relación a la creación de contenido, y basados en investigaciones previas, se establece que el consumidor turístico de la Generación Y crea contenido en la red por motivos de auto-expresión, y para reforzar su identidad a través de sus experiencias vacacionales (Consumo Simbólico de la Experiencia Turística). En los resultados de esta investigación de corte cuantitativa se muestra que el Consumo Simbólico de la Experiencia Turística, medido a partir de la Congruencia entre la Experiencia Vacacional con la Identidad del Consumidor, se relaciona de forma directa con la Intensidad de Uso de las Redes Sociales para Crear Contenido, así como con otra serie de variables (el Valor Social Percibido de la Experiencia; la Satisfacción; la Intención de Revisita; y la Intención de Boca-Oído Positiva), cuyas relaciones explican la Creación de Vínculos y la Intensidad de Uso de las Redes Sociales por este perfil de turistas. En lo que respecta a las variables que motivan el Uso de las Redes Sociales para Buscar Información, nos centramos en el Valor Percibido de la Información. A raíz de los resultados, podemos afirmar que existen seis dimensiones que explican el Valor de la Información en este contexto de investigación: el Valor Utilitario y la Evasión de Riesgo Percibido (juntos conforman la dimensión Funcional del Valor Percibido de la Información); el Valor Hedónico y el Valor Sensacional (juntos constituyen la Dimensión Emocional del Valor Percibido de la Información); el Valor de la Interacción con otros usuarios y la Congruencia entre la Información con la Identidad del consumidor turístico (juntos constituyen la Dimensión Social del Valor Percibido de la Información). Para contrastar las hipótesis del modelo empírico planteado en el estudio, en relación a las mencionadas variables y constructos, se utilizaron técnicas de estadística multivariante. Entre ellas se destacan el Análisis Factorial Confirmatorio y el Análisis de Ecuaciones Estructurales. Como parte de las conclusiones, la investigación incluye implicaciones para la gestión, así como las limitaciones del estudio y una serie de líneas de investigación futuras.

La pregunta en torno a la metodología educativa en la formación universitaria de comunicadores sociales cobra cada día más fuerza en los ámbitos académicos. Al parecer existe una clara conciencia de que no basta con resolver los grandes problemas epistemológicos, teóricos y políticos de la comunicación, para garantizar una adecuada formación a los miles de estudiantes que pueblan las escuelas y facultades de comunicación, tanto en México como en América Latina.

Trabajo Fin de Grado-Universidad Pontificia de Salamanca, Facultad de Educación, 2015, En las últimas décadas la enseñanza del inglés como lengua extranjera, dentro del sistema educativo español, ha tenido un fuerte impulso debido a las orientaciones y directrices de la Unión Europea. Los sistemas educativos han tratado de dar respuesta a este impulso desde edades tempranas. La etapa de Educación Infantil, es el momento propicio para la primera toma de contacto con una segunda lengua. La adquisición de la lectoescritura a través del método de fonética sintética se está extendiendo cada vez más en las aulas de Infantil con el objetivo de sentar las bases de conciencia fonológica e introducción a la lectoescritura más ricas que implementen el proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje, tanto en el área de lengua extranjera como en el estudio de otras asignaturas que son impartidas en inglés. La fonética sintética exige una alta cualificación del profesorado, un estudio de los materiales existentes y en el mercado y una puesta en práctica que exigen una gran reflexión en la puesta en práctica de este método para los alumnos españoles de educación infantil. Esta es la razón de ser de este Trabajo de Fin de Grado: el estudio y reflexión del momento educativo en cuanto a la enseñanza de una segunda lengua se refiere (metodología AILCLE, con programas bilingües) y materiales en fonética sintética que implemente el proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje del inglés en las aulas de Educación Infantil.
