We present computational results on electronic, magnetic, and structural properties of CoVMnSb, a quaternary Heusler alloy. Our calculations indicate that this material may crystallize in two energetically close structural phases: inverted and regular cubic. The inverted cubic phase is the ground state, with ferrimagnetic alignment, and around 80% spin polarization. Despite having a relatively large bandgap in the minority-spin channel close to the Fermi level, this phase does not undergo a half-metallic transition under pressure. This is explained by the "pinning" of the Fermi level at the minority-spin states at the Γ point. At the same time, the regular cubic phase is half-metallic and retains its perfect spin polarization under a wide range of mechanical strain. Transition to a regular cubic phase may be attained by applying uniform pressure (but not biaxial strain). In practice, this pressure may be realized by an atomic substitution of non-magnetic atoms (Sb) with another non-magnetic atom (Si) of a smaller radius. Our calculations indicate that 25% substitution of Sb with Si results in a half-metallic regular cubic phase being the ground state. In addition, CoVMnSb0.5Si0.5 retains its half-metallic properties under a considerable range of mechanical pressure, as well as exhibits thermodynamic stability, thus making this alloy attractive for potential spintronic applications. In this study, we present results of a comprehensive computational and experimental study of CoFeVAl and CoFeV0.5Mn0.5Al Heusler alloys. It is shown that while CoFeVAl exhibits a fairly large degree of spin polarization, this material is not half-metallic due to the presence of the vanadium spin-down states at the Fermi level. However, replacing 50% of vanadium with manganese results in a nearly half-metallic transition, largely due to the shift of the Fermi level towards occupied states. Moreover, the half-metallicity of CoFeV0.5Mn0.5Al is rather robust in a wide range of considered mechanical strain and under experimentally observed B2-type atomic disorder, thus making this alloy potentially suitable for practical spintronic applications. Both considered alloys exhibit ferromagnetic alignment at larger lattice constants, aside from a relatively small magnetic moment of vanadium which is anti-aligned with the magnetic moments of Co, Fe and Mn. We have synthesized both CoFeVAl and CoFeV0.5Mn0.5Al alloys in cubic structure with some structural disorder using arc melting and annealing. The structural and magnetic properties of the synthesized CoFeV0.5Mn0.5Al alloy are in good agreement with the theoretical calculations but vary slightly from the parent compound. An electronic growth mode has been reported to occur in several noble metals on MoS2 but has not been observed on other layered semiconductors. In this work, the experiments show that Au(111) islands initially follow an electronic growth mode on WS2, matching the quantization seen in Au/MoS2. However, while epitaxial nanostructures with similar features are observed on WSe2, there is no sign of electronic growth. Binding energy calculations show that multiple bonding sites have nearly the same energy on both WS2 and MoS2, while Au strongly prefers a single bonding site on WSe2. Having multiple sites with the same energy gives flexibility in interfacial bonding that can alleviate strain from the 9+% lattice mismatch in these systems, which would, otherwise, easily suppress quantum size effects from electronic growth modes. Near surface defects can significantly impact the quality of metallic interconnects and other interfaces necessary to create device structures incorporating two-dimensional materials. Furthermore, the impact of such defects can strongly depend on their organization. In this study, we present scanning tunneling microscopy images and tunneling spectroscopy of point and linear defects near the surface of natural MoS2. The point defects share similar structural and electronic characteristics and occur with comparable frequency as subsurface sulfur vacancies observed previously on natural MoS2. The linear defects observed here occur less frequently than the point defects but share the same depth profile and electronic structure. These data indicate that the linear defects are actually a one-dimensional organization of subsurface sulfur vacancies. Our density functional calculations agree with this assessment in that, for sufficient local defect concentrations, it is energetically more favorable for the defects to be organized in a linear fashion rather than as clusters or even isolated single point defects. Given these measurements were taken from naturally formed MoS2, this organization likely occurs during crystal formation. Considering the impact of one-dimensional organization on the local properties of layered materials, and the potential for them to be introduced purposefully during crystal formation, research into the formation mechanism and properties of these defects could enable new paths for defect engineering in MoS2-based systems. Quantum confinement effects can induce the formation of discrete nanostructures with well-defined preferred heights in thin metallic films. In most systems, such electronic growth modes are weak and limited to cryogenic conditions. Recently, however, we have discovered that metals grown upon van der Waals surfaces can exhibit electronic growth at, or even above, room temperature to spontaneously form well-defined and highly stable nanostructures. Here, we explore the initial stages of room temperature deposition of Pd onto MoS2. We found that, even for minimal thicknesses, Pd spontaneously formed discrete islands with three atomic layers. The islands maintained this preferred height for nominal coverages below three atomic layers. At higher coverages, the preferred height switched abruptly to six atomic layers. Unlike previous studies using Au or Ag, the islands did not increase laterally with coverage but rather increased in number with lateral size remaining about the same. The preferred heights in Pd/MoS2 correlate to the Pd Fermi surface topography and are also consistent with thicknesses showing minima in the density of states at the Fermi level, which suggest that the electronic growth modes are the driving factors in these self-assembled Pd nanostructures. The Pd system shows a preference for island nucleation compared to Au and Ag which grow laterally with increasing coverage. Half-metallic Heusler alloys have been intensively studied in recent years due to their potential applications in spin-based devices, e.g., in magnetic tunnel junctions. Yet, their properties may be very sensitive to the choice of the substrates, i.e., to the epitaxial strain and interface properties. Here, we report the results of our computational work on the half-Heusler compound CrMnSb(1−x)Px. In particular, we demonstrate that the parent compound CrMnSb is close to a half-metallic material at the optimized lattice parameter, with the onset of the half-metallic bandgap a few meV above the Fermi energy. Moreover, although it undergoes a half-metallic transition under a uniform compression of ∼1.5%, such a transition is absent under epitaxial strain. At the same time, we show that a half-metallic transition could be induced by a chemical substitution of Sb with P, which results in a volume reduction of the unit cell. In particular, 50% substitution of Sb with P leads to a robust half-metallicity in CrMnSb(1−x)Px, with 100% spin polarization being retained at a large range of epitaxial strain. Thus, our results indicate that CrMnSb0.5P0.5 could be grown on different types of substrates, e.g., GaAs, without its electronic properties being detrimentally affected by biaxial strain. In addition, CrMnSb0.5P0.5 exhibits a fully compensated ferrimagnetic alignment, which could be potentially useful in applications where stray magnetic fields are undesirable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We have investigated the physical mechanism behind magnetization reduction in a potential spin-gapless semiconducting compound MnCrVAl by analyzing various atomic disorder schemes. In particular, we show that depending on the degree of disorder, exchanging atomic positions between Mn/Cr and V/Al leads to reduced total magnetization due to either spin flip, or vanishing spin magnetic moments. The latter is attributed to the itinerant character of magnetism in Cr-, Mn-, and V-containing Heusler alloys, and to the frustration of antiferromagnetic exchange interactions, and is accompanied by a tetragonal distortion, but such distortion alone (i.e., in a fully ordered crystal, with no atomic disorder) is not sufficient for a transition to zero magnetization. Besides, we demonstrate that in certain disordered structures the spin polarization of MnCrVAl significantly increases, reaching the half-metallic state. Our calculations indicate that exchange of atomic positions of Mn with Cr, and V with Al has no significant effect on electronic and magnetic properties of MnCrVAl. We also show that antisite disorder does not result in significant reduction of magnetization. At the same time, some types of antisite disorder result in essentially 100% spin-polarized structures. Half-metallic Heusler alloys have attracted significant attention due to their potential application in spin-transport-based devices. We have synthesized one such alloy, CoFeV0.5Mn0.5Si, using arc melting and high-vacuum annealing at 600 °C for 24 hours. First principles calculation indicates that CoFeV0.5Mn0.5Si shows a nearly half-metallic band structure with a degree of spin polarization of about 93%. In addition, this value can be enhanced by the application of tensile strain. The room temperature x-ray diffraction patterns are indexed with the cubic crystal structure without secondary phases. The annealed sample shows ferromagnetic order with the Curie temperature well above room temperature (Tc = 657 K) and a saturation magnetization of about 92 emu/g. Our results indicate that CoFeV0.5Mn0.5Si has a potential for room temperature spin-transport-based devices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Spin-filter tunneling is a promising way to generate highly spin-polarized current, a key component for spintronics applications. In this paper we explore the tunneling conductance across the spin-filter material CoFe2O4 interfaced with Au electrodes, a geometry which provides nearly perfect lattice matching at the CoFe2O4/Au(001) interface. Using density functional theory calculations we demonstrate that interface states play a decisive role in controlling the transport spin polarization in this tunnel junction. For a realistic CoFe2O4 barrier thickness, we predict a tunneling spin polarization of about -60%. We show that this value is lower than what is expected based solely on considerations of the spin-polarized band structure of CoFe2O4, and therefore that these interface states can play a detrimental role. We argue that this is a rather general feature of ferrimagnetic ferrites and could make an important impact on spin-filter tunneling applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy (VCMA) is an efficient way to manipulate the magnetization states in nanomagnets and is promising for low-power spintronic applications. The underlying physical mechanism for VCMA is known to involve a change in the d orbital occupation on the transition-metal interface atoms with an applied electric field. However, a simple qualitative picture of how this occupation controls the magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MCA) and even why in certain cases the MCA has the opposite sign remains elusive. In this paper, we exploit a simple model of orbital populations to elucidate a number of features typical for the interface MCA, and the effect of the electric field on it, for 3d transition-metal thin films used in magnetic tunnel junctions. We find that in all considered cases, including the Fe(001) surface, clean Fe1-xCox(001)/MgO interface, and oxidized Fe(001)/MgO interface, the effects of alloying and the electric field enhance the MCA energy with electron depletion, which is largely explained by the occupancy of the minority-spin dxz,yz orbitals. However, the hole-doped Fe(001) exhibits an inverse VCMA in which the MCA enhancement is achieved when electrons are accumulated at the Fe (001)/MgO interface with the applied electric field. In this regime, we predict a significantly enhanced VCMA that exceeds 1 pJ/Vm. Realizing this regime experimentally may be favorable for the practical purpose of voltage-driven magnetization reversal. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
