With the growing complexity of fact verification tasks, the concern with "thoughtful" reasoning capabilities is increasing. However, recent fact verification benchmarks mainly focus on checking a narrow scope of semantic factoids within claims and lack an explicit logical reasoning process. In this paper, we introduce CheckWhy, a challenging dataset tailored to a novel causal fact verification task: checking the truthfulness of the causal relation within claims through rigorous reasoning steps. CheckWhy consists of over 19K "why" claim-evidence-argument structure triplets with supports, refutes, and not enough info labels. Each argument structure is composed of connected evidence, representing the reasoning process that begins with foundational evidence and progresses toward claim establishment. Through extensive experiments on state-of-the-art models, we validate the importance of incorporating the argument structure for causal fact verification. Slot filling and intent detection are two highly correlated tasks in spoken language understanding (SLU). Recent SLU research attempts to explore zero-shot prompting techniques in large language models to alleviate the data scarcity problem. Nevertheless, the existing prompting work ignores the cross-task interaction information for SLU, which leads to sub-optimal performance. To solve this problem, we present the pioneering work of Cross-task Interactive Prompting (CroPrompt) for SLU, which enables the model to interactively leverage the information exchange across the correlated tasks in SLU. Additionally, we further introduce a multi-task self-consistency mechanism to mitigate the error propagation caused by the intent information injection. We conduct extensive experiments on the standard SLU benchmark and the results reveal that CroPrompt consistently outperforms the existing prompting approaches. In addition, the multi-task self-consistency mechanism can effectively ease the error propagation issue, thereby enhancing the performance. We hope this work can inspire more research on cross-task prompting for SLU.

The proliferation of open-source Large Language Models (LLMs) underscores the pressing need for evaluation methods. Existing works primarily rely on external evaluators, focusing on training and prompting strategies. However, a crucial aspect, model-aware glass-box features, is overlooked. In this study, we explore the utility of glass-box features under the scenario of self-evaluation, namely applying an LLM to evaluate its own output. We investigate various glass-box feature groups and discovered that the softmax distribution serves as a reliable quality indicator for self-evaluation. Next Basket Recommender Systems (NBRs) function to recommend the subsequent shopping baskets for users through the modeling of their preferences derived from purchase history, typically manifested as a sequence of historical baskets. Given their widespread applicability in the E-commerce industry, investigations into NBRs have garnered increased attention in recent years. Despite the proliferation of diverse NBR methodologies, a substantial challenge lies in the absence of a systematic and unified evaluation framework across these methodologies. Various studies frequently appraise NBR approaches using disparate datasets and diverse experimental settings, impeding a fair and effective comparative assessment of methodological performance. To bridge this gap, this study undertakes a systematic empirical inquiry into NBRs, reviewing seminal works within the domain and scrutinizing their respective merits and drawbacks. Subsequently, we implement designated NBR algorithms on uniform datasets, employing consistent experimental configurations, and assess their performances via identical metrics. This methodological rigor establishes a cohesive framework for the impartial evaluation of diverse NBR approaches. Pre-trained vision-language models, e.g., CLIP, working with manually designed prompts have demonstrated great capacity of transfer learning. Recently, learnable prompts achieve state-of-the-art performance, which however are prone to overfit to seen classes, failing to generalize to unseen classes. In this paper, we propose a Knowledge-Aware Prompt Tuning (KAPT) framework for vision-language models. Our approach takes inspiration from human intelligence in which external knowledge is usually incorporated into recognizing novel categories of objects. Specifically, we design two complementary types of knowledge-aware prompts for the text encoder to leverage the distinctive characteristics of category-related external knowledge. The discrete prompt extracts the key information from descriptions of an object category, and the learned continuous prompt captures overall contexts. We further design an adaptation head for the visual encoder to aggregate salient attentive visual cues, which establishes discriminative and task-aware visual representations. We conduct extensive experiments on 11 widely-used benchmark datasets and the results verify the effectiveness in few-shot image classification, especially in generalizing to unseen categories. Compared with the state-of-the-art CoCoOp method, KAPT exhibits favorable performance and achieves an absolute gain of 3.22% on new classes and 2.57% in terms of harmonic mean., Comment: Accepted by ICCV 2023

By summarizing longer consumer health questions into shorter and essential ones, medical question answering (MQA) systems can more accurately understand consumer intentions and retrieve suitable answers. However, medical question summarization is very challenging due to obvious distinctions in health trouble descriptions from patients and doctors. Although existing works have attempted to utilize Seq2Seq, reinforcement learning, or contrastive learning to solve the problem, two challenges remain: how to correctly capture question focus to model its semantic intention, and how to obtain reliable datasets to fairly evaluate performance. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a novel medical question summarization framework using entity-driven contrastive learning (ECL). ECL employs medical entities in frequently asked questions (FAQs) as focuses and devises an effective mechanism to generate hard negative samples. This approach forces models to pay attention to the crucial focus information and generate more ideal question summarization. Additionally, we find that some MQA datasets suffer from serious data leakage problems, such as the iCliniq dataset's 33% duplicate rate. To evaluate the related methods fairly, this paper carefully checks leaked samples to reorganize more reasonable datasets. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our ECL method outperforms state-of-the-art methods by accurately capturing question focus and generating medical question summaries. In natural language processing (NLP), the context of a word or sentence plays an essential role. Contextual information such as the semantic representation of a passage or historical dialogue forms an essential part of a conversation and a precise understanding of the present phrase or sentence. However, the standard attention mechanisms typically generate weights using query and key but ignore context, forming a Bi-Attention framework, despite their great success in modeling sequence alignment. This Bi-Attention mechanism does not explicitly model the interactions between the contexts, queries and keys of target sequences, missing important contextual information and resulting in poor attention performance. Accordingly, a novel and general triple-attention (Tri-Attention) framework expands the standard Bi-Attention mechanism and explicitly interacts query, key, and context by incorporating context as the third dimension in calculating relevance scores. Four variants of Tri-Attention are generated by expanding the two-dimensional vector-based additive, dot-product, scaled dot-product, and bilinear operations in Bi-Attention to the tensor operations for Tri-Attention. Extensive experiments on three NLP tasks demonstrate that Tri-Attention outperforms about 30 state-of-the-art non-attention, standard Bi-Attention, contextual Bi-Attention approaches and pretrained neural language models1.

Next basket recommender systems (NBRs) aim to recommend a user's next (shopping) basket of items via modeling the user's preferences towards items based on the user's purchase history, usually a sequence of historical baskets. Due to its wide applicability in the real-world E-commerce industry, the studies NBR have attracted increasing attention in recent years. NBRs have been widely studied and much progress has been achieved in this area with a variety of NBR approaches having been proposed. However, an important issue is that there is a lack of a systematic and unified evaluation over the various NBR approaches. Different studies often evaluate NBR approaches on different datasets, under different experimental settings, making it hard to fairly and effectively compare the performance of different NBR approaches. To bridge this gap, in this work, we conduct a systematical empirical study in NBR area. Specifically, we review the representative work in NBR and analyze their cons and pros. Then, we run the selected NBR algorithms on the same datasets, under the same experimental setting and evaluate their performances using the same measurements. This provides a unified framework to fairly compare different NBR approaches. We hope this study can provide a valuable reference for the future research in this vibrant area.

A session-based news recommender system recommends the next news to a user by modeling the potential interests embedded in a sequence of news read/clicked by her/him in a session. Generally, a user's interests are diverse, namely there are multiple interests corresponding to different types of news, e.g., news of distinct topics, within a session. %Modeling such multiple interests is critical for precise news recommendation. However, most of existing methods typically overlook such important characteristic and thus fail to distinguish and model the potential multiple interests of a user, impeding accurate recommendation of the next piece of news. Therefore, this paper proposes multi-interest news sequence (MINS) model for news recommendation. In MINS, a news encoder based on self-attention is devised on learn an informative embedding for each piece of news, and then a novel parallel interest network is devised to extract the potential multiple interests embedded in the news sequence in preparation for the subsequent next-news recommendations. The experimental results on a real-world dataset demonstrate that our model can achieve better performance than the state-of-the-art compared models.

Session-based recommendations (SBRs) capture items' dependencies from the sessions to recommend the next item. In recent years, Graph neural networks (GNN) based SBRs have become the mainstream of SBRs benefited from the superiority of GNN in modeling complex dependencies. Based on a strong assumption of adjacent dependency, any two adjacent items in a session are necessarily dependent in most GNN-based SBRs. However, we argue that due to the uncertainty and complexity of user behaviors, adjacency does not necessarily indicate dependency. However, the above assumptions do not always hold in actual recommendation scenarios, so it can easily lead to two drawbacks: (1) false dependencies occur in the session because there are adjacent but not really dependent items, and (2) the missing of true dependencies occur in the session because there are non-adjacent but actually dependent items. These drawbacks significantly affect item representation learning, degrading the downstream recommendation performance. To address these deficiencies, we propose a novel review-refined inter-item graph neural network (RI-GNN), which utilizes topic information extracted from the reviews of items to improve dependencies between items. News recommender systems are essential for helping users to efficiently and effectively find out those interesting news from a large amount of news. Most of existing news recommender systems usually learn topic-level representations of users and news for recommendation, and neglect to learn more informative aspect-level features of users and news for more accurate recommendation. As a result, they achieve limited recommendation performance. Aiming at addressing this deficiency, we propose a novel Aspect-driven News Recommender System (ANRS) built on aspect-level user preference and news representation learning. Here, news aspect is fine-grained semantic information expressed by a set of related words, which indicates specific aspects described by the news. In ANRS, news aspect-level encoder and user aspect-level encoder are devised to learn the fine-grained aspect-level representations of user's preferences and news characteristics respectively, which are fed into click predictor to judge the probability of the user clicking the candidate news. A transaction-based recommender system (TBRS) aims to predict the next item by modeling dependencies in transactional data. Generally, two kinds of dependencies considered are intra-transaction dependency and inter-transaction dependency. Most existing TBRSs recommend next item by only modeling the intra-transaction dependency within the current transaction while ignoring inter-transaction dependency with recent transactions that may also affect the next item. However, as not all recent transactions are relevant to the current and next items, the relevant ones should be identified and prioritized. In this paper, we propose a novel hierarchical attentive transaction embedding (HATE) model to tackle these issues. Specifically, a two-level attention mechanism integrates both item embedding and transaction embedding to build an attentive context representation that incorporates both intraand inter-transaction dependencies. With the learned context representation, HATE then recommends the next item.
