We studied the effects arising from a coherent source of photons on the entanglement between excitons in a strained graphene monolayer. The graphene layer was considered to be embedded in an imperfect optical microcavity. In our investigation, we have studied the entanglement dynamics of systems consisting of up to five excitons, which are treated as atomic-like qubits. Entangled states of multiple qubits are useful in quantum error correction codes. We have monitored the time evolution of the concurrence, three-$\pi$, mutual information, and especially the negativity. We have demonstrated that coherent pumping can create lasting entanglement between the excitons. However, the entanglement only persists when the rate at which photons are pumped is smaller than the decay rate of the cavity. Our results show that the degree in entanglement between the excitons is increased with the intensity of the strain-induced pseudomagnetic field in the graphene sheet. Additionally, we have shown that a maximum amount of entanglement occurs at a finite number of excitons in the system which depends on the parameters describing the structure.

We consider Bose-Einstein condensation of noninteracting homogeneous three-dimensional gas in canonical ensemble when both particle number $N$ and total momentum $\mathbf{P}$ of all particles are fixed. Using the saddle point method, we derive the large-$N$ analytical approximations for partition function, free energy, and statistical distributions of occupation numbers of different single-particle energy levels. At temperatures below the critical point of phase transition, we predict, in some ranges of $\mathbf{P}$, fragmentation of the condensate, when more than one single-particle level is macroscopically occupied. The occupation number distributions have approximately Gaussian shapes for the levels hosting the condensate, and exponential shapes for other, noncondensate levels. Two-component systems consisting of mutually interacting particles can demonstrate both intracomponent transport effects and intercomponent entrainment (or drag) effects. In the presence of superfluidity, the intracomponent transport is characterized by dissipative conductivity and superfluid weight in the framework of two-fluid model, and intercomponent entrainment gives rise to normal and nondissipative drag effects. We present unified treatment of all these effects for spatially homogeneous two-component atomic Bose-Einstein condensates based on the Bogoliubov theory, focusing specifically on the drag effects. Calculating finite-frequency intra- and intercomponent conductivities with taking into account quasiparticle damping, we derive and numerically check analytical Drude-like approximations applicable at low frequencies, and Lorentz-like approximations applicable at higher frequencies in vicinity of the resonant energy of spin-to-density Bogoliubov quasiparticle conversion. Edge magnetoplasmons arise on a boundary of conducting layer in perpendicular magnetic field due to an interplay of electron cyclotron motion and Coulomb repulsion. Lateral electric field, which confines electrons inside the sample, drives their spiraling motion in magnetic field along the edge with the average drift velocity contributing to the total magnetoplasmon velocity. We revisit this classical picture by developing fully quantum theory of drift velocity starting from analysis of magnetic edge channels and their electrodynamic response. We derive the quantum-mechanical expression for the drift velocity, which arises in our theory as a characteristic of such response and can be calculated as harmonic mean of group velocities of edge channels crossing the Fermi level. Using the Wiener-Hopf method to solve analytically the edge mode electrodynamic problem, we demonstrate that the edge channel response effectively enhances the bulk Hall response of the conducting layer and thus increases the edge magnetoplasmon velocity. The potential energy surface (PES) of interlayer interaction of infinite twisted bilayer graphene is calculated for a set of commensurate moir\'e patterns using the registry-dependent Kolmogorov-Crespi empirical potential. The calculated PESs have the same shape for all considered moir\'e patterns with the unit cell size of the PES which is inversely related to the unit cell size of the moir\'e pattern. The amplitude of PES corrugations is found to decrease exponentially upon increasing the size of the moir\'e pattern unit cell. An analytical expression for such a PES including the first Fourier harmonics compatible with the symmetries of both layers is derived. It is shown that the calculated PESs can be approximated by the derived expression with the accuracy within 1%. This means that different physical properties associated with relative in-plane motion of graphene layers are interrelated and can be expressed analytically as functions of the amplitude of PES corrugations. In this way, we obtain the shear mode frequency, shear modulus, shear strength and barrier for relative rotation of the commensurate twisted layers to a fully incommensurate state for the considered moir\'e patterns. This barrier may possibly lead to the macroscopic robust superlubricity for twisted graphene bilayer with a commensurate moir\'e pattern. We develop the many-body theory of dipolar exciton-polaritons in an optical microcavity in crossed transverse electric and in-plane magnetic fields. Even for relatively weak fields, we reveal the existence of two minima in the bare lower-polariton dispersion, which give rise to the tuneable transition between the polariton Bose-Einstein condensate and that of excitons, produced by the competition between these minima. We predict that such dipolar condensate exhibits a roton-maxon character of the excitation spectrum, never before observed for polaritons. We show that upon the transition between the two condensation regimes, the weak correlations in the polariton gas give way to the intermediate interparticle correlations characteristic for excitons, and that the transition is accompanied by a sharp quenching of photoluminescence as the lifetime is increased by several orders of magnitude. While in the polariton regime, the luminescence peak corresponding to the condensate is shifted to a non-zero angle. The angular dependence of the two-photon decay time in the Hanbury Brown and Twiss experiment is calculated and used as a tool to evidence the formation of the macroscopically-coherent state. Bose-Fermi systems such as mixtures of electrons with excitons or exciton-polaritons are extensively discussed as candidates to host a variety of intriguing phenomena, including polaron formation, drag effects, supersolidity, and superconductivity. In this work, assuming the strong-coupling regime between the semiconductor excitons and cavity photons, we develop the many-body theory approach addressing the interplay of different types of interaction among various species in such a mixture, wherein we take into account dynamical density responses of both the Bose-condensed exciton-polaritons and the two-dimensional electron gas inside an optical microcavity. As was anticipated previously, at high enough polariton densities the lower hybrid mode of the system's excitation spectrum acquires a roton minimum, making the system prone to superconducting pairing in the vicinity of the roton instability. We analyze the possibility of polariton-BEC-mediated superconductivity in the electron gas taking into account full momentum and frequency dependence of the gap, as well as in the Eliashberg approach where the momentum dependence is neglected, and in the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer approach that discards the frequency dependence and dynamical effects. Considering the interaction screening in Thomas-Fermi and in random-phase approximations, we estimate the critical temperatures of superconductivity to be not larger than 0.1 K in the vicinity of instability. We consider non-dissipative drag between Bose-condensed exciton polaritons in optical microcavity and embedded superconductors. This effect consists in induction of a non-dissipative electric current in the superconductor by motion of polariton Bose condensate due to electron-polariton interaction, or vice versa. Using many-body theory, we calculate the drag density, characterizing magnitude of this effect, with taking into account dynamical screening of the interaction. Hoping to diminish the interaction screening and microcavity photon absorption, we consider atomically-thin superconductors (both conventional s-wave and copper-oxide d-wave) of planar and nanoribbon shapes. Our estimates show that in realistic conditions the drag effect could be rather weak but observable in accurate experiments in the case of dipolar interlayer excitons in transition metal dichalcogenide bilayers. Use of spatially direct excitons, semiconductor quantum wells as the host for excitons, or thin films of bulk metallic superconductors considerably lowers the drag density., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

We develop a theoretical model for a tunable coherent terahertz radiation source based on the long-lived Bose condensate of photons. In the device we propose, the original photon pumping is performed incoherently by a blackbody radiation emitter. The photons thus produced Bose-condense by the inelastic relaxation on a two-dimensional electron gas in a perpendicular magnetostatic field. The process involves neither population inversion nor light wave amplification the standard laser sources are built on. The coherence and tunability of the light emitted by such a photon condensate are provided and supported by the discrete spectrum of the electron gas in the quantizing magnetic field. The device is a compact-size semiconductor crystal. We propose the design and perform the realistic calculations of the physical properties and limiting factors for the terahertz photon Bose-condensate resonator. We show that our terahertz source can deliver the highly coherent light emission in the frequency range of 3-30 THz for the magnetic field induction of the order of 2 T, with the upper emission frequency limit adjustable by the strength of the magnetic field applied., Comment: Main text (15 pages, 7 figures, 52 references) + Supplementary materials (27 pages, 27 figures, 10 references)

The Andreev-Bashkin effect, or superfluid drag, is predicted in a system of Bose-condensed excitonic polaritons in optical microcavity coupled by electron-exciton interaction with a superconducting layer. Two possible setups with spatially indirect dipole excitons or direct excitons are considered. The drag density characterizing a magnitude of this effect is found by many-body calculations with taking into account dynamical screening of electron-exciton interaction. For the superconducting electronic layer, we assume the recently proposed polaritonic mechanism of Cooper pairing, although the preexisting thin-film superconductor should also demonstrate the effect. According to our calculations, the drag density can reach considerable values in realistic conditions, with excitonic and electronic layers made from GaAs-based quantum wells or two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides. We develop the theory of the magnetic-field-induced Wigner crystallization effect for charged interlayer excitons (CIE) discovered recently in transition-metal-dichalcogenide (TMD) heterobilayers. We derive the ratio of the average potential interaction energy to the average kinetic energy for the many-particle CIE system subjected to the perpendicular magnetic field of an arbitrary strength, analyze the weak and strong field regimes, and discuss the 'cold' crystallization phase transition for the CIE system in the strong field regime. We also generalize the effective g-factor concept previously formulated for interlayer excitons, to include the formation of CIEs in electrostatically doped TMD heterobilayers. We show that magnetic-field-induced Wigner crystallization and melting of CIEs can be observed in strong-field magneto-photoluminescence experiments with TMD heterobilayes of systematically varied electron-hole doping concentrations. The quantum entanglement between two excitons in two-dimensional materials, embedded in an optical microcavity, was investigated. The energy eigenstates of a Jaynes-Cummings like Hamiltonian for two qubits coupled to a single cavity mode have been calculated. The quantum entanglement between such states was estimated by calculating the concurrence between two qubits in each of these eigenstates. According to the results of our calculations, if the system is allowed to decay only through the emission of cavity photons at low temperatures, there is a maximally entangled eigenstate, protected from decay. We demonstrated that the existence of such a state results in the counter-intuitive conclusion that, for some initial states of the system, the fact that the cavity is leaky can actually lead to an increase in the average concurrence on the timescales of the average photonic lifetime. We study the interlayer pairing states in layered systems of two different 2d electronic subsystems, one with relativistic linear and the other with non-relativistic parabolic spectrum. The complex order parameter of the paired state has a two component structure. We investigate the pairing state formation on the mean-field level, determine the critical interaction strength and evaluate the effective potential. The anisotropic three-band spectrum of quasiparticles depends explicitly on the phase difference of the order parameter components, rotates in momentum space as it changes. It is subject to the strong band deformation due to the pairing. It leads to the fusion and hybridization of initially decoupled bands. The quasiparticle spectrum has the shape of deformed Dirac cones in the vicinity of the two touching points between neighboring bands. The density of states exhibits a number of specific features due to band deformation, such as a van Hove singularity., Comment: Accepted by Phys. Rev. B

In this letter, we give an analytical quantum description of a non-equilibrium polariton Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) based on the solution of the master equation for the full polariton density matrix in the limit of fast thermalization. We find the density matrix of a non-equilibrium BEC, that takes into account quantum correlations between all polariton states. We show that the formation of BEC is accompanied by the build-up of cross-correlations between the ground state and the excited states reaching their highest values at the condensation threshold. Despite the non-equilibrium nature of polariton systems, we show the average population of polariton states exhibits the Bose-Einstein distribution with an almost zero effective chemical potential above the condensation threshold similar to an equilibrium BEC. We demonstrate that above threshold the effective temperature of polariton condensate drops below the reservoir temperature.

Molecular dynamics simulations show that a graphene nanoribbon with alternating regions which are one and three hexagons wide can transform into a hybrid 1D nanoobject with alternating double chains and polycyclic regions under electron irradiation in HRTEM. A scheme of synthesis of such a nanoribbon using Ullmann coupling and dehydrogenation reactions is proposed. The reactive REBO-1990EVC potential is adapted for simulations of carbon-hydrogen systems and is used in combination with the CompuTEM algorithm for modeling of electron irradiation effects. The atomistic mechanism of formation of the new hybrid 1D nanoobject is found to be the following. Firstly hydrogen is removed by electron impacts. Then spontaneous breaking of bonds between carbon atoms leads to decomposition of narrow regions of the graphene nanoribbon into double chains. Simultaneously thermally activated growth of polycyclic regions occurs. Density functional theory calculations give barriers along the growth path of polycyclic regions consistent with this mechanism. Electronic properties of the new 1D nanoobject are shown to be strongly affected by the edge magnetism and make this nanostructure promising nanoelectronic and spintronic applications. The way of synthesis the 1D nanoobject proposed here can be considered as an example of the general three-stage strategy of production of nanoobjects and macromolecules. 1) precursors are synthesized by traditional chemical method, 2) precursors are placed in HRTEM with the electron energy that is sufficient only to remove hydrogen atoms, 3) as a result of hydrogen removal, the precursors become unstable or metastable and transform into new nanoobjects or macromolecules., Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures in the paper; 5 pages and 3 figures in the supplementary information

Recently discussed topological materials Weyl-semimetals (WSs) combine both: high electron mobility comparable with graphene and unique topological protection of Dirac points. We present novel results related to electromagnetic field propagation through WSs. It is predicted that transmission of the normally incident polarized electromagnetic wave (EMW) through the WS strongly depends on the orientation of polarization with respect to a gyration vector $\mathbf{g}$. The latter is related to the vector-parameter $\mathbf{b}$, which represents the separation between the Weyl nodes of opposite chirality in the first Brillouin zone. By changing the polarization of the incident EMW with respect to the gyration vector $\mathbf{g}$ the system undergoes the transition from the isotropic dielectric to the medium with Kerr- or Faraday-like rotation of polarization and finally to the system with chiral selective electromagnetic field. The recent progress in nanotechnology [1,2] and single-molecule spectroscopy [3-5] paves the way for cost-effective organic quantum optical technologies emergent with a promise to real-life devices operating at ambient conditions. In this letter, we harness $\pi$-conjugated segments of an organic ladder-type polymer strongly coupled to a microcavity forming correlated collective dressed states of light, so-called of exciton-polariton condensates. We explore an efficient way for all-optical ultra-fast control over the macroscopic condensate wavefunction via a single photon. Obeying Bose statistics, exciton-polaritons exhibit an extreme nonlinearity undergoing bosonic stimulation [6] which we have managed to trigger at the single-photon level. Relying on the nature of organic matter to sustain stable excitons dressed with high energy molecular vibrations we have developed a principle that allows for single-photon nonlinearity operation at ambient conditions opening the door for practical implementations like sub-picosecond switching, amplification and all-optical logic at the fundamental limit of single light quanta.

We study the effect of a uniform pseudomagnetic field, induced by a strain in a monolayer and double layer of gapped graphene, acting on excitons. For our analysis it is crucial that the pseudomagnetic field acts on the charges of the constituent particles of the excitons, i.e., the electrons and holes, the same way in contrast to a magnetic field. Moreover, using a circularly polarized laser field, the electrons and the holes can be excited only in one valley of the honeycomb lattice of gapped graphene. This breaks the time-reversal symmetry and provides the possibility to observe the various Quantum Hall phenomena in this pseudomagnetoexciton system. Throughout the years, strongly correlated coherent states of excitons have been the subject of intense theoretical and experimental studies. This topic has recently boomed due to new emerging quantum materials such as van der Waals (vdW) bound atomically thin layers of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). We analyze the collective properties of charged interlayer excitons observed recently in bilayer TMD heterostructures. We predict new strongly correlated phases - crystal and Wigner crystal - that can be selectively realized with TMD bilayers of properly chosen electron-hole effective masses by just varying their interlayer separation distance. We study the effect of interlayer Coulomb interaction in an electronic double layer. Assuming that each of the layers consists of a bipartite lattice, a sufficiently strong interlayer interaction leads to an interlayer pairing of electrons with a staggered order parameter. We show that the correlated pairing state is dual to the excitonic pairing state with uniform order parameter in an electron-hole double layer. The interlayer pairing of electrons leads to strong current-current correlations between the layers. We also analyze the interlayer conductivity and the fluctuations of the order parameter, which consists of a gapped and a gapless mode.

The virial and the Hellmann--Feynman theorems for massless Dirac electrons in a solid are derived and analyzed using generalized continuity equations and scaling transformations. Boundary conditions imposed on the wave function in a finite sample are shown to break the Hermiticity of the Hamiltonian resulting in additional terms in the theorems in the forms of boundary integrals. The thermodynamic pressure of the electron gas is shown to be composed of the kinetic pressure, which is related to the boundary integral in the virial theorem and arises due to electron reflections from the boundary, and the anomalous pressure, which is specific for electrons in solids. Connections between the kinetic pressure and the properties of the wave function on the boundary are drawn. The general theorems are illustrated by examples of uniform electron gas, and electrons in rectangular and circular graphene samples. Magnetoplasmons on graphene edge in quantizing magnetic field are investigated at different Landau level filling factors. To find the mode frequency, the optical conductivity tensor of disordered graphene in magnetic field is calculated in the self-consistent Born approximation, and the nonlocal electromagnetic problem is solved using the Wiener-Hopf method. Magnetoplasmon dispersion relations, velocities and attenuation lengths are studied numerically and analytically with taking into account the screening by metallic gate and the energy dissipation in graphene. The magnetoplasmon velocity decreases in the presence of nearby gate and oscillates as a function of the filling factor because of the dissipation induced frequency suppression occurring when the Fermi level is located near the centers of Landau levels, in agreement with the recent experiments., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures; Appendices A and B discussing the problems of conductivity calculations were added

We present the theory of many-body corrections to cyclotron transition energies in graphene in strong magnetic field due to Coulomb interaction, considered in terms of the renormalized Fermi velocity. A particular emphasis is made on the recent experiments where detailed dependencies of this velocity on the Landau level filling factor for individual transitions were measured. Taking into account the many-body exchange, excitonic corrections and interaction screening in the static random-phase approximation, we successfully explained the main features of the experimental data, in particular that the Fermi velocities have plateaus when the 0th Landau level is partially filled and rapidly decrease at higher carrier densities due to enhancement of the screening. We also explained the features of the nonmonotonous filling-factor dependence of the Fermi velocity observed in the earlier cyclotron resonance experiment with disordered graphene by taking into account the disorder-induced Landau level broadening., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures; additional calculation data (in particular, Fig. 4) were included in this new version

The spin Hall effect for polaritons (SHEP) in a transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDC) monolayer embedded in a microcavity is predicted. We demonstrate that two counterpropagating laser beams incident on a TMDC monolayer can deflect a superfluid polariton flow due to the generation the effective gauge vector and scalar potentials. The components of polariton conductivity tensor for both non-interacting polaritons without Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC)and for weakly-interacting Bose gas of polaritons in the presence of BEC and superfluidity are obtained. It is shown that the polariton flows in the same valley are splitting: the superfluid components of the \textit{A} and \textit{B} polariton flows propagate in opposite directions along the counterpropagating beams, while the normal components of the flows slightly deflect in opposite directions and propagate almost perpendicularly to the beams. We propose a way to increase the lifetime of two-dimensional direct excitons and show the possibility to observe their macroscopically coherent state at high temperatures. For a single GaAs quantum well embedded in photonic layered heterostructures with subwavelength period, we predict the exciton radiative decay to be strongly suppressed. Quantum hydrodynamic approach is used to study the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless crossover in a finite exciton system with intermediate densities. Single-layer and bilayer carbon and hexagonal boron nitride nanoscrolls as well as nanoscrolls made of bilayer graphene/hexagonal boron nitride heterostructure are considered. Structures of stable states of the corresponding nanoscrolls prepared by rolling single-layer and bilayer rectangular nanoribbons are obtained based on the analytical model and numerical calculations. The lengths of nanoribbons for which stable and energetically favorable nanoscrolls are possible are determined. Barriers to rolling of single-layer and bilayer nanoribbons into nanoscrolls and barriers to nanoscroll unrolling are calculated. Based on the calculated barriers nanoscroll lifetimes in the stable state are estimated. Elastic constants for bending of graphene and hexagonal boron nitride layers used in the model are found by density functional theory calculations., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

Renormalization of Landau level energies in graphene in strong magnetic field due to Coulomb interaction is studied theoretically, and calculations are compared with two experiments on carrier-density dependent scanning tunneling spectroscopy. An approximate preservation of the square-root dependence of the energies of Landau levels on their numbers and magnetic field in the presence of the interaction is examined. Many-body calculations of the renormalized Fermi velocity with the statically screened interaction taken in the random-phase approximation show good agreement with both experiments. The crucial role of the screening in achieving quantitative agreement is found. The main contribution to the observed rapid logarithmic growth of the renormalized Fermi velocity on approach to the charge neutrality point turned out to be caused not by mere exchange interaction effects, but by weakening of the screening at decreasing carrier density. The condensate density profile of trapped two-dimensional gas of photons in an optical microcavity, filled by a dye solution, is analyzed taking into account a coordinate-dependent effective mass of cavity photons and photon-photon coupling parameter. The profiles for the densities of the superfluid and normal phases of trapped photons in the different regions of the system at the fixed temperature are analyzed. The radial dependencies of local mean-field phase transition temperature $T_c^0 (r)$ and local Kosterlitz-Thouless transition temperature $T_c (r)$ for trapped microcavity photons are obtained. The coordinate dependence of cavity photon effective mass and photon-photon coupling parameter is important for the mirrors of smaller radius with the high trapping frequency, which provides BEC and superfluidity for smaller critical number of photons at the same temperature. The quantum entanglement and the probability of the dynamical Lamb effect for two qubits caused by non-adiabatic fast change of the boundary conditions are studied. Using the Kubo formalism we have calculated the local dynamic conductivity of a bulk, i.e., three-dimensional (3D), Dirac semimetal (BDS). We obtain that at frequencies lower than Fermi energy the metallic response in a BDS film manifests in the existence of surface-plasmon polaritons, but at higher frequencies the dielectric response is dominated and it occurs that a BDS film behaves as a dielectric waveguide. At this dielectric regime we predict the existence inside a BDS film of novel electromagnetic modes, a 3D analog of the transverse electric waves in graphene. We also find that the dielectric response manifests as the wide-angle passband in the mid-infrared (IR) transmission spectrum of light incident on a BDS film, which can be used for the interferenceless omnidirectional mid-IR filtering. The tuning of the Fermi level of the system allows us to switch between the metallic and the dielectric regimes and to change the frequency range of the predicted modes. Exciton-photon beats known as polariton Rabi oscillations in semiconductor microcavities are usually excited by short pulses of light. We consider a different pumping scheme, assuming a cw pumping of the Rabi oscillator from an exciton reservoir. We account for the initial pulse of light setting the phase, exciton decay due to exciton-phonon and exciton-exciton scattering, photon leakage, and blueshift of the exciton resonance due to interactions. We find non-trivial stationary solutions reminiscent of Kapitza pendulum, where polaritons are accumulated at the upper branch while the lower branch empties., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures (including Supplemental Material)

We studied the quantum correlations between the nodes in a quantum neural network built of an array of quantum dots with dipole-dipole interaction. By means of the quasiadiabatic path integral simulation of the density matrix evolution in a presence of the common phonon bath we have shown the coherence in such system can survive up to the liquid nitrogen temperature of 77K and above. The quantum correlations between quantum dots are studied by means of calculation of the entanglement of formation in a pair of quantum dots with the typical dot size of a few nanometers and the interdot distance of the same order. We propose an implementation of quantum neural networks using an array of quantum dots with dipole-dipole interactions. We demonstrate that this implementation is both feasible and versatile by studying it within the framework of GaAs based quantum dot qubits coupled to a reservoir of acoustic phonons. Using numerically exact Feynman integral calculations, we have found that the quantum coherence in our neural networks survive for over a hundred ps even at liquid nitrogen temperatures (77 K), which is three orders of magnitude higher than current implementations which are based on SQUID-based systems operating at temperatures in the mK range., Comment: revtex, 5 pages, 2 eps figures

The tunneling current according to the pro-posed model is proportional to the area of tunneling transition. Structural, energetic and tribological characteristics of double-layer graphene with commensurate and incommensurate krypton spacers of nearly monolayer coverage are studied within the van der Waals-corrected density functional theory. It is shown that when the spacer is in the commensurate phase, the graphene layers have the AA stacking. For this phase, the barriers to relative in-plane translational and rotational motion and the shear mode frequency of the graphene layers are calculated. For the incommensurate phase, both of the barriers are found to be negligibly small. A considerable change of tunneling conductance between the graphene layers separated by the commensurate krypton spacer at their relative subangstrom displacement is revealed by the use of the Bardeen method. The possibility of nanoelectromechanical systems based on the studied tribological and electronic properties of the considered heterostructures is discussed.

A novel type of spaser with the net amplification of surface plasmons (SPs) in doped graphene nanoribbon is proposed. The plasmons in THz region can be generated in a dopped graphene nanoribbon due to nonradiative excitation by emitters like two level quantum dots located along a graphene nanoribbon. The minimal population inversion per unit area, needed for the net amplification of SPs in a doped graphene nanoribbon is obtained. The dependence of the minimal population inversion on the surface plasmon wavevector, graphene nanoribbon width, doping and damping parameters necessary for the amplification of surface plasmons in the armchair graphene nanoribbon is studied., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

The possibility to control the commensurability and distance between graphene layers separated by a dielectric spacer is considered by the example of a heterostructure consisting of double-layer graphene separated by atomic layers of argon. Van der Waals corrected density functional theory (DFT-D) is applied to study structural, energetic and tribological characteristics of this heterostructure. It is found that in the ground state, monolayer and bilayer argon spacers are incommensurate with the graphene layers, whereas submonolayer argon spacers which are commensurate with the graphene layers can exist only as metastable states. The calculations show that this incommensurability provides negligibly small static friction for relative motion of argon-separated graphene layers and, therefore, such a heterostructure holds great promise for the use in nanoelectromechanical systems. Tunneling between opposite surfaces of topological insulator thin film populated by electrons and holes is considered. We predict considerable enhancement of tunneling conductivity by Cooper electron-hole pair fluctuations that are precursor of their Cooper pairing. Cooper pair fluctuations lead to the critical behavior of tunneling conductivity in vicinity of critical temperature with critical index \nu=2. If the pairing is suppressed by disorder the behavior of tunneling conductivity in vicinity of quantum phase transition is also critical with the index \mu=2. The effect can be interpreted as fluctuational internal Josephson effect and it is general phenomenon for electron-hole bilayers. Interwall interaction energies of double-walled nanotubes (DWNTs) with long inner and short outer walls are calculated as functions of coordinates describing relative rotation and displacement of the walls using van der Waals corrected density functional theory. The magnitude of corrugation and the shape of the potential energy relief are found to be very sensitive to changes of the shorter wall length at subnanometer scale and atomic structure of the edges if at least one of the walls is chiral. Threshold forces required to start relative motion of the short walls and temperatures at which the transition between diffusive and free motion of the short walls takes place are estimated. The edges are also shown to provide a considerable contribution to the barrier to relative rotation of commensurate nonchiral walls. For such walls, temperatures of orientational melting, i.e. the crossover from rotational diffusion to free relative rotation, are estimated.
