Abstract

In this essay, we detail the fundamental reasons for antitrust policy’s right turn toward the consumer welfare theory and against antitrust enforcement in the 1970s. Two recent articles raise questions as to the cause of this turn, with one article arguing that big business capture facilitated the right turn, while another touts a consensus around science-based economics. We argue that while the capture theory is more persuasive, power dynamics between heterogeneous business alliances shifted due to changes in the economy that eroded the incomes of the wealthiest; reductions in antitrust enforcement was one means of restoring that lost income. This essay details that economic history in support of a more nuanced capture theory.

Abstract

Two dimensional (2D) crystals have attracted strong interest as a new class of proton conducting materials that can block atoms, molecules and ions while allowing proton transport through the atomically thin basal planes. Although 2D materials exhibit this perfect selectivity, the reported proton conductivities have been relatively low. Here we show that vacancy-rich titania monolayers are highly permeable to protons while remaining impermeable to helium with proton conductivity exceeding 100 S cm-2 at 200 C and surpassing targets set by industry roadmaps. The fast and selective proton transport is attributed to an extremely high density of titanium-atom vacancies (one per square nm), which effectively turns titania monolayers into angstrom-scale sieves. Our findings highlight the potential of 2D oxides as membrane materials for hydrogen-based technologies.

Abstract

We study $N$ fermionic impurities in a one-dimensional lattice bosonic bath at unit filling. Using DMRG and mixed boundary conditions -- closed for bosons, open for fermions -- we find an $N$-polaron ground state replacing phase separation at high interspecies repulsion. This tightly bound state of clustered particles emerges due to strong impurity-bath correlations which induce large impurity-impurity correlations, that we quantify via the von Neumann entropy and bipartite mutual information respectively. This system also reveals a fermionic self-localization effect from a Mott insulator background due to local correlations between the impurities and the bath. The growth of long-range correlations breaks this Mott phase, resulting in the transition to localized impurity clusters. Finally, we show that there is a critical impurity number, which depends on intraspecies bosonic interaction, beyond which phase separation is recovered., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

5. The Role of Afrocultural Ethos in African American Youth's Emotion Skill Development

Abstract

Research on African American youth's emotional development provides an incomplete understanding of the cultural influences that shape emotion-related skills such as emotion expression, regulation, and understanding. In this article, I propose the multiple cultural frameworks of triple quandary theory to characterize the nature of mainstream cultural experiences and minority cultural experiences in current research on emotional development in African American youth. I also discuss Afrocultural ethos as an aspect of African American cultural experiences that shapes African American emotional development, using affect and orality as examples that can be explored and embedded within emotional development research. Finally, I describe important factors for researchers to consider in the study of Afrocultural ethos in affective developmental science.

Abstract

Human prenatal skin is populated by innate immune cells, including macrophages, but whether they act solely in immunity or have additional functions in morphogenesis is unclear. Here we assembled a comprehensive multi-omics reference atlas of prenatal human skin (7-17 post-conception weeks), combining single-cell and spatial transcriptomics data, to characterize the microanatomical tissue niches of the skin. This atlas revealed that crosstalk between non-immune and immune cells underpins the formation of hair follicles, is implicated in scarless wound healing and is crucial for skin angiogenesis. We systematically compared a hair-bearing skin organoid (SkO) model derived from human embryonic stem cells and induced pluripotent stem cells to prenatal and adult skin1. The SkO model closely recapitulated in vivo skin epidermal and dermal cell types during hair follicle development and expression of genes implicated in the pathogenesis of genetic hair and skin disorders. However, the SkO model lacked immune cells and had markedly reduced endothelial cell heterogeneity and quantity. Our in vivo prenatal skin cell atlas indicated that macrophages and macrophage-derived growth factors have a role in driving endothelial development. Indeed, vascular network remodelling was enhanced following transfer of autologous macrophages derived from induced pluripotent stem cells into SkO cultures. Innate immune cells are therefore key players in skin morphogenesis beyond their conventional role in immunity, a function they achieve through crosstalk with non-immune cells.

Abstract

The basal plane of graphene can function as a selective barrier that is permeable to protons but impermeable to all ions and gases, stimulating its use in applications such as membranes, catalysis and isotope separation. Protons can chemically adsorb on graphene and hydrogenate it, inducing a conductor-insulator transition that has been explored intensively in graphene electronic devices. However, both processes face energy barriers and various strategies have been proposed to accelerate proton transport, for example by introducing vacancies, incorporating catalytic metals or chemically functionalizing the lattice. However, these techniques can compromise other properties, such as ion selectivity or mechanical stability. Here we show that independent control of the electric field, E, at around 1 V nm-1, and charge-carrier density, n, at around 1 x 10^14 cm-2, in double-gated graphene allows the decoupling of proton transport from lattice hydrogenation and can thereby accelerate proton transport such that it approaches the limiting electrolyte current for our devices. Proton transport and hydrogenation can be driven selectively with precision and robustness, enabling proton-based logic and memory graphene devices that have on-off ratios spanning orders of magnitude. Our results show that field effects can accelerate and decouple electrochemical processes in double-gated 2D crystals and demonstrate the possibility of mapping such processes as a function of E and n, which is a new technique for the study of 2D electrode-electrolyte interfaces.

Abstract

Natural killer (NK) cells are innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) contributing to immune responses to microbes and tumors. Historically, their classification hinged on a limited array of surface protein markers. Here, we used single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) and cellular indexing of transcriptomes and epitopes by sequencing (CITE-seq) to dissect the heterogeneity of NK cells. We identified three prominent NK cell subsets in healthy human blood: NK1, NK2 and NK3, further differentiated into six distinct subgroups. Our findings delineate the molecular characteristics, key transcription factors, biological functions, metabolic traits and cytokine responses of each subgroup. These data also suggest two separate ontogenetic origins for NK cells, leading to divergent transcriptional trajectories. Furthermore, we analyzed the distribution of NK cell subsets in the lung, tonsils and intraepithelial lymphocytes isolated from healthy individuals and in 22 tumor types. This standardized terminology aims at fostering clarity and consistency in future research, thereby improving cross-study comparisons.

Abstract

Las lesiones iatrogénicas de la vía biliar se asocian a incremento de la morbimortalidad y ocurren tras procedimientos quirúrgicos en este caso la colecistectomía, esta puede ser abierta o laparoscópica sin embargo desde el surgimiento de la colecistectomía laparoscópica la incidencia incremento siendo en la era de la convencional de 0.1-0.2% llegando hasta un 1.1%. Asociándose a determinados factores como la experiencia quirurgica, obesidad, cirrosis, adherencias por cirugías previas etc.

Abstract

Adoptar prácticas ambientales responsables garantiza que los recursos naturales se utilicen de manera sostenible. Esto es fundamental para asegurar que las generaciones futuras también puedan beneficiarse de los recursos y del entorno. Por tal motivo, el objetivo de esta investigación es analizar las políticas, estrategias y tecnologías ambientales empleadas en la minería de yeso para una gestión sostenible en La Guajira, Colombia. Considerando que son fundamentales por diversas razones, especialmente en contextos ambientales, industriales y extractivos como la minería. Además, este estudio es de carácter descriptivo y teórico, adoptando un diseño de investigación no experimental debido a su naturaleza cualitativa, de modo que no se manipulan deliberadamente las variables. La población de interés está constituida por las empresas mineras Yesos Sdinyc S.A.S., Yesos Colombia S.A.S., y la mina artesanal de yeso en Manaure. Los resultados revelaron en lo que concierne a las políticas ambientales dentro de las empresas existen una carencia en la aplicación de las mismas; en cuanto a la implementación de estrategias y tecnologías ambientales las empresas han tomado la iniciativa para mejorar en sus actividades mineras. A pesar de los esfuerzos de algunas de estas empresas por mejorar y contribuir al cuidado ambiental, se recomienda la adopción e implementación de estrategias integrales que promuevan una gestión eficiente de los recursos naturales y aseguren prácticas operativas responsables y sostenibles en la minería de yeso.

Abstract

The SEL Innovations series aims to help the field imagine new, more expansive and equitable approaches to SEL and wellness to ensure that all children, adolescents, and adults feel safe, supported, and seen so that they can thrive. This report focuses on the conditions and guiding actions to foster authentic school-family partnerships. Research confirms that school-family partnerships are crucial. While much attention has been given to the core competencies, our new innovations series digs deeper into the "rings" of CASEL's SEL Framework where young people live and learn, beginning with school-family partnerships. The report offers case studies illustrating four guiding actions in practice, featuring Communities in Schools of Michigan, The Allegheny County Family Center Network's Parent Advisory Council, Village of Wisdom, and Minneapolis Public Schools Parent Participatory Evaluation Initiative. The report includes these guiding actions for school staff: (1) Begin with family priorities, interests, concerns, knowledge, and resources to create opportunities for building trust and genuine relationships; (2) Transform power dynamics by increasing the capacity of both families and staff around knowledge and confidence; (3) Build reciprocity and agency between school staff and families by setting up systems and structures that foster a sense of camaraderie and collaboration; and (4) Undertake change as collective inquiry together using the relationships that are built as a way to collaboratively problem-solve.

49. Effects of germplasm exchange strategies on genetic gain, homozygosity, and genetic diversity in dairy stud populations: A simulation study

Abstract

ABSTRACT: Although genomic selection has led to considerable improvements in genetic gain, it has also seemingly led to increased rates of inbreeding and homozygosity, which can negatively affect genetic diversity and the long-term sustainability of dairy populations. Using genotypes from US Holstein animals from 3 distinct stud populations, we performed a simulation study consisting of 10 rounds of selection, with each breeding population composed of 200 males and 2,000 females. The investigated selection strategies consisted of selection using true breeding values, EBV, EBV penalized for the average future genomic inbreeding of progeny (PEN-EBV), or random selection (RAND). We also simulated several germplasm exchange strategies where germplasm of males from other populations was used for breeding. These strategies included exchanging males based on EBV, PEN-EBV, or low genomic future inbreeding value (GFI) of progeny, or randomly (RAND). Variations of several parameters, such as the correlation between the selection objectives of populations and the size of the exchange, were simulated. Penalizing genetic merit to minimize genomic inbreeding of progeny provided similar genetic gain and reduced the average homozygosity of populations compared with the EBV strategy. Germplasm exchange was found to generally provide long-term benefits to all stud populations. In both the short and the long term, germplasm exchange using the EBV or PEN-EBV strategies provided more cumulative genetic progress than the no-exchange strategy; the amount of long-term genetic progress achieved with germplasm exchange using these strategies was higher for scenarios with a higher genetic correlation between the traits selected by the studs and for a larger size of the exchange. Both the PEN-EBV and GFI exchange strategies allowed decreases in homozygosity and provided significant benefits to genetic diversity compared with other strategies, including larger average minor allele frequencies and smaller proportions of markers near fixation. Overall, this study showed the value of breeding strategies to balance genetic progress and genetic diversity and the benefits of cooperation between studs to ensure the sustainability of their respective breeding programs.

Abstract

ABSTRACT: Computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA) has become the predominant tool for assessing bull semen in AI programs. Despite such popularity CASA's ability to predict fertility has been limited, especially when emphasis is based on single motion characteristics. Our hypothesis is that numerical sets of CASA measures provide a more effective method to differentiate the potential fertilization capacity of bulls and that bulls can be clustered based on sets of CASA measures. Therefore, we used CASA to evaluate frozen-thawed semen samples from 307 Holstein and 152 Jersey bulls sourced from USDA Agricultural Research Service's National Animal Germplasm Program gene bank. Sperm was evaluated immediately after thawing and 30 min later. We evaluated sperm kinetic and morphometric means and variances to capture the structure of CASA data in relation to various sources of variation. These data were subjected to univariate and multivariate statistical methods to investigate animal and management factors affecting sperm characteristics measured by CASA. Clustering with K-means identified 4 clusters of bulls based upon each cluster's set of CASA parameters after thawing. There was little overlap among clusters for sets of CASA measures. At the extremes, bull cluster 1 (BC1, n = 180) and BC3 (n = 101) had different sire conception rates (SCR) −0.07 versus −1.29, respectively, and sets of CASA measures. Interestingly, bull cluster 2 (BC2) had CASA measures that could be perceived as negative, for example, cell size at 8.18 mm2 versus 6.37 mm2 for bull cluster 4 (BC4) and total motility of 29.7% versus 48.7% for BC3, but SCR for BC2 were higher (−0.79) than those for BC3 (−1.29). Despite such discrepancies for some BC2 CASA values it appears the potentially negative effects were offset by the levels of other CASA values. Our findings suggest improved approaches for using CASA could lie in evaluating multiple CASA measures as sets within specific numerical ranges rather than as independent measures.
