Recent advancements in medical science have ushered in the era of "Personalized Medicine," which tailors treatments to individual genetics, lifestyle, and environmental factors. A cornerstone of this approach is continuous monitoring and adjustment of treatment regimens to optimize effectiveness while minimizing side effects. In therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM), crucial for drugs like doxorubicin (DOX) with severe side effects, traditional methods such as spectrofluorimetry and chromatography are utilized, but they suffer from cost and complexity issues. Biosensors, especially those leveraging Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance (LSPR) and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), offer a promising alternative. This study focuses on developing a cost-effective plasmonic biosensor using gold nanoislands semiembedded in a glass substrate. The LSPR platform, based on gold nanoislands (Au NIs) with an average diameter of 23 nm, offers a rapid method for ultrasensitive, label-free detection of DOX in biological fluids up to the nanomolar range, even in diluted (1:10) and undiluted blood serum samples from cancer patients receiving the drug. The method capitalizes on the extraordinary adhesion between the nanoislands and the glass matrix, preserving plasmon integrity while enhancing the electric field surrounding the nanoislands for improved sensitivity. Moreover, by exploiting nanoislands with Au/Al2O3 core/shell structures with an average diameter and gap of about 70 and 7 nm, respectively, highly efficient SERS-active platforms are created, enabling the detection of ultralow DOX concentrations down to picomolar range, where the LSPR system is insensitive. The combined use of both systems enables the detection of DOX across a broad range, from low to high nanomolar concentrations, in biological fluids. This integration of semiembedded nanoislands presents a scalable and multifunctional approach suitable for point-of-care diagnostics, offering reproducible and stable characteristics over time. MoS2 is a two-dimensional layered transition metal dichalcogenide with unique electronic and optical properties. The fabrication of ultrathin MoS2 is vitally important, since interlayer interactions in its ultrathin varieties will become thickness-dependent, providing thickness-governed tunability and diverse applications of those properties. Unlike with a number of studies that have reported detailed information on direct bandgap emission from MoS2 monolayers, reliable experimental evidence for thickness-induced evolution or transformation of the indirect bandgap remains scarce. Here, the sulfurization of MoO3 thin films with nominal thicknesses of 30 nm, 5 nm and 3 nm was performed. All sulfurized samples were examined at room temperature with spectroscopic ellipsometry and photoluminescence spectroscopy to obtain information about their dielectric function and edge emission spectra. This investigation unveiled an indirect-to-indirect crossover between the transitions, associated with two different Λ and K valleys of the MoS2 conduction band, by thinning its thickness down to a few layers. In particular, a conventional precursor injection method along with a boosted precursor delivery approach are discussed and analysed. In the latter, the proposed gas supply mechanism ensures a large number of deposited Mo atoms per unit of time, which, along with a proper thermal energy, leads to high-quality and oriented orthorhombic α-MoO3 films. The proposed boosted approach is also compared with post growth annealing steps, resulting in more effective achievement of a highly oriented orthorhombic α-MoO3 phase and less time consumption. Aluminum bowtie nanoantennas represent a possibility to confine and enhance electromagnetic (EM) field at optical frequencies in subwavelength regions by using an abundant and inexpensive metal. The native oxidation process of this metal is often viewed as a limitation for its application in plasmonics. Here, we show that in close gap configurations, the high refractive index of the native aluminum oxide helps in squeezing the plasmonic mode in extremely reduced size volumes, providing a higher EM near-field confinement and enhancement in the bowtie antenna gaps than achieved in the pure aluminum counterpart. Hence, the study provides new perspectives in the use of such a plasmonic antenna geometry within this aluminum system, which can be useful for improving plasmonics-enabled effects such as surface-enhanced Raman scattering- and light–matter interaction in strong coupling regime. We demonstrate the fabrication of polymeric membranes that incorporate a few layers of periodically aligned magnetic microchains formed upon the application of variable magnetic fields. A homogeneous solution containing an elastomeric polymer and a small amount of colloidal magnetic nanoparticles is spin coated on glass slides, thereby forming thin magnetic membranes of ca. 10 μm thickness. Subsequent application of a homogeneous magnetic field results in the orientation of the magnetic clusters and their further motion into the matrix along the field lines forming layers of aligned chains. The study of the kinetics of alignment demonstrates that the chains are formed in the first hour of exposure to the magnetic field. Above all, a detailed microscopy study reveals that the dimensions and the periodicity of the microchains are effectively controlled by the intensity of the magnetic field, in good agreement with the theoretical simulations. This ability to form and manipulate the size and the distribution of chains into the polymeric matrix gives the opportunity to develop multifunctional composite materials ready to be used in various applications such as electromagnetic shielding, or multifunctional magnetic membranes etc. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mouse mammary tumor virus (MMTV) is a milk-borne betaretrovirus that has developed strategies to exploit and subvert the host immune system. Here, we show in a natural model of MMTV infection that the virus causes early and progressive increases in superantigen (SAg)-specific Foxp3+ regulatory T cells (Treg) in Peyer's patches (PP). These increases were shown to be dependent on the presence of dendritic cells. CD4+ CD25+ T cells from the PP of infected mice preferentially suppress the proliferative response of T cells to SAg-expressing antigen-presenting cells ex vivo. We investigated the influence of the depletion of CD25+ cells at different stages of the infection. When CD25+ cells were depleted before MMTV infection, an increase in the number of PP SAg-cognate Foxp3- T cells was found at day 6 of infection. Since the SAg response is associated with viral amplification, the possibility exists that Treg cells attenuate the increase in viral load at the beginning of the infection. In contrast, depletion of CD25+ cells once the initial SAg response has developed caused a lower viral load, suggesting that at later stages Treg cells may favor viral persistence. Aim: To assess the sentinel-node identification rate at lymphoscintigraphy and its technical feasibility after neo-adjuvant treatments., Material of Study: Between 2000 and 2013, 444 consecutive patients affected by primary locally advanced breast cancer were enrolled in this study. All individuals were candidate for neo-adjuvant treatments and for lymphoscintigraphy before surgery., Results: The median age was 44 years at onset; almost one sentinel node was identified during lymphoscintigraphy in 430 cases. The detection rate at lymphoscintigraphy was 96.9% (95% CI, 94.8-98.1%). Considering the correlation between specific treatments and sentinel node identification rate, we verified that the detection rate did not vary significantly (p=0.53) according to the type of neo-adjuvant therapies administered to the patients., Conclusions: Our results demonstrated that lymphoscintigraphy for sentinel node identification is a safe and feasible procedure after neo-adjuvant therapies, independently of treatment types., Key Words: Breast Cancer, Neo-Adjuvant Treatment, Sentinel lymphnode biopsy, Lymphoscintigraphy.
