Background The humid tropical forests of Central Africa influence weather worldwide and play a major role in the global carbon cycle. However, they are also an ecological anomaly, with evergreen forests dominating the western equatorial region despite less than 2,000 mm total annual rainfall. Meteorological data for Central Africa are notoriously sparse and incomplete and there are substantial issues with satellite-derived data because of persistent cloudiness and inability to ground-truth estimates. Long-term climate observations are urgently needed to verify regional climate and vegetation models, shed light on the mechanisms that drive climatic variability and assess the viability of evergreen forests under future climate scenarios. Methods We have the rare opportunity to analyse a 34 year dataset of rainfall and temperature (and shorter periods of absolute humidity, wind speed, solar radiation and aerosol optical depth) from Lopé National Park, a long-term ecological research site in Gabon, western equatorial Africa. We used (generalized) linear mixed models and spectral analyses to assess seasonal and inter-annual variation, long-term trends and oceanic influences on local weather patterns. Results Lopé’s weather is characterised by a cool, light-deficient, long dry season. Long-term climatic means have changed significantly over the last 34 years, with warming occurring at a rate of +0.25 °C per decade (minimum daily temperature) and drying at a rate of −75 mm per decade (total annual rainfall). Inter-annual climatic variability at Lopé is highly influenced by global weather patterns. Sea surface temperatures of the Pacific and Atlantic oceans have strong coherence with Lopé temperature and rainfall on multi-annual scales. Conclusions The Lopé long-term weather record has not previously been made public and is of high value in such a data poor region. Our results support regional analyses of climatic seasonality, long-term warming and the influences of the oceans on temperature and rainfall variability. However, warming has occurred more rapidly than the regional products suggest and while there remains much uncertainty in the wider region, rainfall has declined over the last three decades at Lopé. The association between rainfall and the Atlantic cold tongue at Lopé lends some support for the ‘dry’ models of climate change for the region. In the context of a rapidly warming and drying climate, urgent research is needed into the sensitivity of dry season clouds to ocean temperatures and the viability of humid evergreen forests in this dry region should the clouds disappear.

- Abstract
In the relationships between men and women, quite always based on conflict, the meaning and the implications of a slap change completely depending on the sex of the victim. With a few exceptions, the selected examples of this essay (Cervantes' El laberinto de amor; Lope's Del mal, lo menos, El primero Benavides, La fuerza lastimosa, El duque de Viseo, Las ferias de Madrid, Los locos de Valencia, Por la puente, Juana y El perro del hortelano; Tirso's El condenado por desconfiado, Doña Beatriz de Silva, El amor médico, La celosa de sí misma; Calderón's Las manos blancas no ofenden) confirm that even a violent act such as a slap belongs to the masculine dimension, and that it may concern the feminine behavior just in the Carnival upside down dimension, considering that jealousy and the comic nonsense are the dramatic pretext for justifying a slap given by a woman hand. - Abstract
This is a study of the changes to autograph manuscripts of Golden Age comedies, whether by the author himself, or by the theatrical companies that performed the plays, in particular the latter. The alterations under consideration –additions, cuts and cues in the text and in stage directions– were made because of the substitution of one actor for another in a particular role. Based on this evidence, the study analyzes the reasons that led playwrights to revise their own texts, and actors to take such liberties.

Fainting is a peculiarity that mostly distinguishes female characters and deserves to be observed not only regarding the strategies that emphasize the unstable mood of women, but also from a pragmatic or scientific point of view. Starting from a second reading of the popular play El acero de Madrid, the article retraces and analyzes the main episodes of fainting in a group of Lope’s works, all of them belonging to the urban comedy genre.

Discussions and negotiations concerning the environment in general and the protection of natural resources in particular have for many years revealed different perceptions among the various actors on the international scene. At the center of these issues is the state sovereignty which is the stumbling block that hinders the application of global policies and strategies at all levels. This situation is the result of a diversity of stakes that States attach to their natural resources. In other words, the recurrence of sovereignty in environmental negotiations can be explained by the fact that, beyond the unanimous agreement of all actors to give priority to the ecological dimension of territories, more and more countries – especially developing countries – are still basing their economies and social conditions on biodiversity. All of these requires arbitration and adjustments in order to reconcile international policies with the local realities of States. Moreover, this context invites us to combine ecological and economic interests by involving all stakeholders. This thesis on environmental sovereignty thus aims to go beyond the political sovereignty of States – the object of divergence – in the context of the environment. However, it takes into account the different stakes (political, economic, and ecological) that these countries attach to their natural resources and to those of the national parks that they create.

- Abstract
Lope de Vega’s theatrical production is one of the largest of the universal theater repertoire, many of his plays are performed nowadays. Among the variety of topics of his plays, the comedies of intrigue were, with no doubt, the most popular in his time. La discreta enamorada is a paradigmatic example of that kind, as it mixes ingredients like love affairs, rejections, jealousy, mistakes, misunderstandings, disguise. This piece of work by Lope de Vega –known as The Phoenix– is a piece of work with remarkable potentiality for being filmed, as is also the case of some of the plays by Tirso de Molina and Valle-Inclán, El teatro de Lope de Vega es uno de los más vastos y actuales de la dramaturgia universal.

The entremés of Los habladores has had its critical swings. Some scholars attribute it to Cervantes, others to Lope, most consider it anonymous. Surprisingly we lacked a reliable edition. In this work, I do not intend to solve the authorship nor to propose an exhaustive analysis of the possible interesting aspects of the text. My main objective is to provide a reliable text, with a series of notes, and add a brief commentary to contextualize it.

La Dorotea, composed in the last phase of his trajectory, shows the fullness of the writing of the Fénix, not only in what assists of a creative and reader process in his own literary autobiography, but for the metafictional audacity of incorporating, like subject and object of the work, to the language and the literature in all the employments, goods, modalities, conventions and procedures of his time: from their composition protocols (classic sources, the learning, the rhetorical canons, the blinks intertextuals or intratextuals) until the sense and the transcendency of the written word (the dialectical fiction / story, the game of the literature and the life, the mixture of speeches). We find a border writing in La Dorotea, where Lope rehearses a hybrid work in the one that theatre, poetry and novel are dissolved under the masks (literary and vital) of who has arrived on the edge of the word with the game.

This paper examines the survival of an epigram by the Latin poet Claudius Claudian (De sene Veronensi or The old man of Verona) in the letters of Spanish Golden Age. The influence of the Alexandrian writer is analyzed through the traces left in the works of most brilliant writers of Hispanic Baroque: Quevedo, Lope and Góngora. The study of the versions of the imitatio provides important data about the interests and stylistic entena of these three authors. Thus, Francisco de Quevedo presents an exact generic equivalent, as the sonnet To a friend who retired from the court passed its age is raised vernacular equivalent of the epigram. For its part, Lope de Vega rewrites late-antique text and inserts it into the monologue of a proud rustic character (Juan Labrador), main character of the comedy El villano en su rincón. Finally, Luis de Góngora encrusted several verses of the epigram in a speech in a direct style pronounced by the wandering Pilgrim in the Soledad segunda. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The behavioural ecology of western lowland gorillas was studied for 16 months in the Lope Reserve, Gabon, where gorillas are sympatric with chimpanzees in lowland tropical forest. Data were collected by direct observation, and by examination of nest-sites, feeding-sites, and trails. The nature of frugivory and the extent of seasonal variation in food selection were emphasised. Dietary composition was identified, and the contribution of fruits was evaluated from the volume of fruit ingested estimated retrospectively from seeds in the gorillas' dung. Forest structure and composition were assessed using transects, and fruit and leaf production was quantified monthly to estimate food availability. Food distribution was patchy, and many foods showed seasonal peaks in abundance. The heterogeneity of the habitat was reflected in the diverse diet: gorillas ate 139 parts of 103 species of plants, including 78 fruits. One third of dung samples contained weaver ants. Vegetative parts of Aframomum and Marantaceae formed staple foods, due to their abundance, accessibility, and year-round availability. Succulent fruit formed over 90% of fruit intake. Seasonal variation was measured in all dietary parameters. Flexible foraging strategies enabled gorillas to cope with fruit scarcity, particularly during the major dry season: when less fruit was available gorillas consumed more stems, leaves, and bark, and ate poorer-quality fibrous fruits. Ranging was influenced by the seasonal availability of particular food species: when fruit was abundant gorillas travelled large distances between sources, when scarce they adopted a low cost strategy, shifting their diet towards more abundant, but poorer quality foods, and travelling less. Differences in feeding, ranging, and climbing between lowland and mountain gorillas result from striking differences in their respective habitats, especially in the abundance and distribution of fruit sources. Lowland gorillas' home ranges were larger; they spent more time in tress, mostly feeding; yet their social structure seemed to be similar to mountain gorillas. Lope gorillas adopted strategies similar to those of other frugivorous primates: fruits were preferred foods, consumed with fibre and leaves to meet nutritional requirements. The switch in diet was facilitated by the gorillas’ large body-size, which may have enabled them to cope with succulent fruit shortages, and allowed gorillas to remain in relatively stable groups.

Within the middle Ogooue´ valley (Gabon), the Lope depression appears as a very particular area with savannas landscape surrounded by rain forest. Such a pattern results from the low annual rainfall and also extensive surface erosion. Several sedimentologic analyses, radiocarbon dates on archaeological levels, δ13C isotopic data of residual organic matter led us to suggest too bad conditions for a forest extension and think that savannas ecosystem has probably always existed in this region during the late Pleistocene and Holocene times and has been seriously influenced by human destabilizations since 9000 years BP and probably for long times before. ARCHAEOLOGY , *CERAMICS , *ANIMALS - Abstract
This article summarizes the results of archaeological research led from 1995 to 1998 in the fauna reserve of Lope´ (Gabon). The excavated sites were dated from the Upper Pleistocene to the Post-colonial period. It is the longest and the most complete archaeological sequence presently known in Central Africa. These results show evidence of human presence in the reserve for over 40 000 years and that this greatly contributed to the preservation of the ecotone landscape of Lope´. In addition, these results offer the first systematic analysis of the sites and the ceramic artefacts produced and used in the centre of Gabon during the last three millennia. Supported by chronological, linguistic and palaeoenvironmental data, these results allow us to refine the ceramic typology and to prove the antiquity of husbandry, agricultural practices and iron production in this part of Africa. Finally, they allow us to clarify the various phases of settlement in the reserve and to reveal an important historic phenomena in connection with the expansion of the bantu languages and/or the bantu speaking peoples, who populate a third of the African continent.

This comparative study addressed the problem of relationships between locomotor behavior and back anatomy in the cursorial monkeys, Cereopithecus aethiops and Erythrocebus patas Analysis of cine-fiIm revealed that paths and vervet monkeys differed significantly in the degree to which they used their backs to increase stride length during galloping. C. aethiops showed increased ranges of sagittal back motion as galloping speed increased almost fivefold; E. patas failed to show significant increases in amplitudes of sagittal back motion despite a five-to-sixfold increase in galloping speed. Comparison of epaxial anatomies demonstrated conservative morphologic features which could not be used to explain interspecific differences in sagittal movement patterns of the back. However, when compared to paths monkeys, vervets possessed thicker intervertebral discs, relative to vertebral bone, and reduced dorsoventral diameters of their thoracic cages. These anatomic differences were explained on the basis of theoretical biomechanics as being necessary structural prerequisites for enhancing sagittal back mobility. The present analysis of locomotor behavior involving the back and epaxial morphologies was integrated with observations of inter-specific differences in limb anatomies and comparative anatomic studies of other mammalian species to develop a general description of strategies used by patas and vervet monkeys to increase stride length during galloping. The figure of the king’s favorite reappears in the Spanish political scene in the beginning of the seventeenth century. Lope, Tirso, Calderón, and other Spanish Golden Age playwrights portrayed these favorites, modeling them after the duke of Lerma and the count duke of Olivares. Lope and Calderón wrote sacramental plays in which they presented Man as the favorite of the King/God, deifying the subject of Man’s redemption that was condemned by his sins. The playwrights criticised some aspects of the powerful ministers’ policies in Las bodas entre el Alma y el Amor divino, and El Nuevo palacio del Retiro.

Application of thermally sprayable polymeric coating is one of the methods for protection of mild steel against corrosion. In the present study, grafting of low density polyethylene (LOPE) was carried out with maleic acid at different concentrations (3, 5, 8 and 10%, w/v) using gamma-irradiation technique. LOPE, gamma-irradiated LOPE and grafted LDPE (LDPE-g-MAc) were characterized by chemical method, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA) and melt flow index (MFI). Grafted LDPE was pigmented with nanoclay (NC) at varying concentrations (1, 2, 3 and 4 wt.%) using melt mixing method. Pigmented compositions were evaluated for their mechanical properties and dispersion characteristics using X-ray diffraction (XRD). LDPE-g-MAc/nanocomposite with 3 wt.% nanoclay showed superior mechanical properties and maximum d-spacing value. This composition was applied on grit blasted mild steel specimens by flame spray technique and evaluated for adhesion strength, abrasion resistance and resistance to corrosion in different exposure conditions. Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) technique was also employed to study the corrosion resistance behavior of the nanocomposite coating. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Contrary to what has often been assumed, honor plays, more than an involuted literary subgenre, respond to a widely documented social reality of wife murders. Delving into a vital problem of his times, Cervantes differs from many other contemporary writers in that he explores the causes of women’s adultery in a very complex domain of affective dysfunctionalities that are usually ignored from the postulates of honor, which privileges above all the unquestionability of marriage as an institution. Quite remarkably, in El celoso extremeño blame is distributed among all the characters except the «adulteress» herself. Although something similar occurs in El curioso impertinente, critics have most often either blamed or belittled Camila, without taking seriously her subjectivity or her exceptional capacity for love and survival. It turns out that she is the only character in this story whose actions are coherent. In these and other Cervantine texts we see that marriage possesses no absolute value and that in certain circumstances a woman’s adultery is more than justifiable.
