This article examines the potential of multifunctional university public spaces, or "third places", with a particular focus on their role as catalysts for social interaction and urban development in the academic environment. It studies the University of Ljubljana's Aškerc Street campus, which is undergoing complete urban regeneration. After identifying all the specific third places, the article shows why third places are important for various stakeholders (students and professors) and presents their suggestions on how to improve the third places on the campus. The findings show that, although university spaces are essential for academic and social activities, they have significant design and use limitations. It shows that students and faculty members frequently make use of third places on and off campus to study, work, relax, and socialize, and for other informal gatherings, and that there is a clear need to provide more flexible, accessible, and non-commercial spaces on the campus. V prvi temeljiti raziskavi življenja in opusa slikarja Carla Vogla (Dunaj, 27. 9. 1820 – po 1862) avtorica evidentira njegova znana dela ter analizira njegove doslej nepoznane ponavljajoče se migracije iz Gradca na jug habsburške monarhije (v Ljubljano in Maribor ter na Hrvaško), ki jih je spodbujala potreba po novih naročilih. Slikarjeve migracije so verjetno povzročile dosedanje slabše poznavanje njegovega življenja in opusa. Članek prinaša tudi zanesljive identifikacije mnogih od Voglovih premožnih in kulturno ozaveščenih naročnikov ter analizira njihovo vlogo v meščanski družbi okoli srede 19. stoletja.

V članku so obravnavani večnamenski javni prostori na univerzah, imenovani tudi tretji prostori, s posebnim poudarkom na njihovi vlogi kot spodbujevalcev socialnih stikov in urbanističnega razvoja v akademskem okolju. Kot študija primera je analiziran kampus Univerze v Ljubljani na Aškerčevi cesti v Ljubljani, ki je trenutno v procesu celovite urbanistične prenove. Po določitvi vseh konkretnih tretjih prostorov v univerzitetnem kampusu sta avtorja opredelila, zakaj so ti prostori pomembni za deležnike (študente in profesorje), in predstavila njihove predloge za izboljšanje in nadgradnjo teh prostorov. Izsledki njune raziskave so pokazali, da so univerzitetni prostori ključni za izvajanje učnih in družabnih aktivnosti, vendar so precejšnje omejitve z vidika oblikovanja in uporabe. Raziskava je pokazala, da študenti in zaposleni tretje prostore v kampusu in zunaj njega uporabljajo za učenje, delo, sprostitev ter druženje in druge neformalne aktivnosti ter da obstaja jasna potreba po bolj prilagodljivih, dostopnih in nekomercialnih prostorih v kampusu.

This paper analyses the value of cultural ecosystem services in urban green spaces. A field survey of 900 respondents in Ljubljana, Slovenia, examined cultural ecosystem services in seven types of urban green spaces and compared the results with two types of non-green public spaces (old town, shopping mall). Differences between the types were assessed using one-way variance analysis (ANOVA). Results showed statistically significant differences between the types, with sports facilities standing out as valuable for recreation and education. The old town's cultural heritage and aesthetics were highly valued, while shopping malls ranked lowest. The study emphasises the importance of urban green spaces for quality of life of residents and informs land use planning decision-making. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Jožef Kalasanc baron Erberg (1771–1843), bogat zbiratelj in mecen, ki je imel povezave s samim dunajskim cesarskim dvorom, je zadnja leta svojega življenja preživel v prostovoljni osami v svojem dvorcu v Dolu pri Ljubljani. Vseeno je hotel biti obveščen o dogajanju, zato je kot informatorja najel stotnika avstrijske vojske po imenu Franc Franz (1779–1840), ki je upokojenska leta preživljal v Ljubljani. Franz je tako Erbergu med letoma 1832 in 1840 skorajda vsakodnevno pošiljal pisma in na ta način ustvaril nekakšno kroniko bidermajerske Ljubljane. Čeprav ob omembi kronik običajno ne pomislimo na pisma oziroma korespondenco, lahko Franzevo korespondenco uvrstimo med vire kronikalnega značaja, saj gre za tekste v vezani obliki, ki prinašajo zgodovinsko pričevanje o dogajanju v določenem prostoru in so ve­likokrat zaznamovani z osebnim pogledom pisca. Vsebinsko gledano je v Franzevih pismih Erbergu največ lokalnih novic o Ljubljani in njenih prebivalcih, pretežno o ljubljanski visoki družbi (plemstvo in visoko meščanstvo), ki jo je Erberg poznal osebno, pa tudi sam Franz se je gibal v njej in je lahko poročal iz prve roke. Nižji sloji so omenjeni redkeje, ponavadi v povezavi s kakšnimi nesrečami, zločini ali nasilnimi smrtmi. Franz je obširno poročal o boleznih, družabnih prireditvah v Ljubljani, gledaliških predstavah, s pomočjo dopisnikov iz tujine pa je poročal tudi o dogajanju iz drugih delov monarhije. Če torej vsebino Franzevih pisem povzamemo s časopisnimi rubrikami, lahko rečemo, da je v njih veliko kulture, družabnega življenja, rumenega tiska in črne kronike, precej manj pa je politike, sociale in gospodarstva.

In this article, we explore the extent to which applying embodied, 'skin in the game' methods used in infrastructure activism (a contemporary art practice) can help expand the toolkit of methods applied in action research on infrastructures, interactions between humans and more-than-humans and urban socio-environmental processes in planning. In particular, we focus on two cases of infrastructure activism: the Amsterdam Zuidoost Food Forest (VBAZO), in Amsterdam's South East, and the KRATER project in Ljubljana's city centre. In our discussion of these projects, we explore the embodied research practices that infrastructure activists have developed to change not only urban green infrastructures but also researcher-actors' own perspectives. 2021 marks the bicentenary of the Congress of Laibach, when Emperor Franz I, Tsar Alexander I, King Ferdinand IV of Naples, and many representatives of other European countries of the time met in the then provincial capital of Carniola. The anniversary was recalled in various radio and television broadcasts at the time, and the Congress was also touched upon by various national and international researchers, who shed light on the events and personalities of the time from different perspectives. Nevertheless, it seems that there is still a lot of research space and, above all, archival material that has not yet been researched and processed. This certainly includes the diary entries of Emperor Franz, in which he recorded some events in a very laconic style, descriptions of places and, above all, buildings that he observed and visited during his stay in Ljubljana. Interestingly, his descriptions of churches or church ceremonies (e.g. Holy Week) are surprisingly richer. Hence, in his diary, the Emperor took time to describe the interior of the Ursuline church in detail. No less interesting is his description of the Ljubljana cathedral, especially as it is presented at the ceremony of the episcopal consecration of the auxiliary bishop of Naples, which was attended by all the most prominent representatives. The Emperor's writings, in describing individual festive events and Church ceremonies, especially the Easter Triduum, give us an almost plastic picture of the pulse of a particular day among the citizens of the capital of Carniola at that time. The present paper aims to shed some light on the celebrations of Church festivals in the light of the Emperor's observations and to draw the attention of the general public to this - at least in Slovenia - unused material. In the second year of his first term, the mayor of Ljubljana Zoran Janković promised that the price of a square metre in Ljubljana would fall to 1,800 euros at the end of his mayoralty. In his seventeenth year, he points to the rise in the value of apartments on Trubarjeva Street to 5,000 euros per square metre as an achievement. The present qualitative analysis of the communication of the Municipality of Ljubljana reveals a huge gap between the promises it has been feeding its citizens for decades and the actual results of the capital's servile capitalist management policies. The municipality's leaky propaganda machine usually works flawlessly and effectively deflects even the most valid criticism. On the subject of the gentrification of Ljubljana, which has been a burning issue in the media for months and which more and more citizens are experiencing first-hand on a daily basis, even the city's most efficient PR team is unable to offer any reassuring answers. Sustainability has become a critical concern for many destinations seeking to revitalize their tourism industry while also dealing with issues stemming from climate change. To address these challenges, practical strategies to manage the harmful effects of the environmental crisis are necessary. Despite the critical role of sustainability, there still needs to be more practical solutions for implementing it in practice. The article aims to (i) broaden the discussion on sustainable tourism and solutions to reduce the impacts of climate change, and (ii) to understand the relationships of affinities between pro-environmental initiatives and the characteristics of the destination based on the perceptions of tourists who visit the city of Ljubljana. This study analyses tourist perception in an urban destination focusing on reducing carbon footprint and promoting sustainable development. Through a case study and the application of Affinities Theory, a specific algorithm to recognise affinity connections, a database with 372 international tourists who visited Ljubljana is utilised. This study has an explanatory goal and uses a comprehensive method (quantitative-qualitative). The findings confirmed that the characteristics of the destination most relevant to the tourist are Sustainable, Environmentally Friendly, and Safe. The research acknowledged practical approaches to improve the competitiveness and sustainability of tourism. The results could assist managers and policymakers in formulating sustainability-based strategies and reducing decision-making uncertainty. Also, it deepens the theoretical understanding of sustainable tourism and climate change mitigation strategies using a modelling and simulation method that other researchers can replicate in different contexts. This innovative research employs the Affinities Theory to assess Ljubljana's urban sustainability, examining how environmental practices can help reduce climate change's impact and how tourists perceive these practices.

This article discusses the presence and activities of nobles and patrician elites in the urban settlements in the territory of present-day Slovenia--both inland and Istrian towns, between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries. Of the continental towns, Maribor, Ptuj and Ljubljana are discussed, and from Istria Piran, Koper and Izola. In that period, nobles from Carniola, Styria, Carinthia and other local nobles increasingly stayed in the inland towns, where they may have been looking for entertainment, sociability, goods and services, etc. Towns in Istria were different. The ancient tradition persevered to a large extent, and they were also marked by Venetian rule. Members of the urban elites in Koper, Izola and Piran were not descendants of feudal noble families, but of bourgeois origin, who managed to attain a privileged position and retain hereditary political power, predicated on real estate and capital. The privileged position of an Istrian urban elite family was reflected in the right to membership in the Great Council--the most important governmental body of a city or town. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article explores graffiti, street art, and murals in the context of the neoliberal city, highlighting the transformation of these forms in the context of growing urban commodification, touristification and gentrification. The paper shows how contemporary neoliberal urbanism has driven the concept of the creative city that, in the framework of late-capitalist interurban rivalry, recuperated graffiti, street art and murals. Drawing on the growing body of literature in the field of graffiti and street art studies, and combining it with urban anthropology, the analysis of ethnographic material collected in Ljubljana (Slovenia) illuminates the role of graffiti and contemporary street art in the context of the neoliberal city – both as antigentrification politics and pro-gentrification policies. The paper argues for a nuanced understanding of the role of graffiti, street art and murals under the neoliberal regime of urban development, emphasizing the multi-layered nature of graffiti and street art: as a form of political activism, as an object of commodification, and as an instrument for de-ideologization, or what the author calls the muralization of capital. Mizzart, a collective of students from different artistic fields, created large-scale paintings in the urban landscape in Ljubljana in the 1980s and 1990s. Their independent artistic practices in public space in the 1980s and 1990s could be described as ‘proto-street art’ – a new avenue of contemporary research in graffiti and street art studies. Based on a brief historical introduction of genealogical connections between street art and graffiti, upgraded with Rafael Schacter's classification of 'street art' as a defined artistic period, the article identifies the main characteristics of ‘proto-street art’, which are: the time of occurrence, agents, spontaneity/sovereignty, iconography, site specificity, unprofitability and interaction with public. The text explores graffiti, street art, and murals in the context of the neoliberal city, highlighting the transformation of these forms in the context of growing commodification, touristification and gentrification of urban space. Through an ethnographic research in Ljubljana (Slovenia), the study illuminates the wall-written dissensus against the current production of abstract space. Special attention is given to the visual transformation in autonomous zones, especially how squatter communities, and in particular an anarcha queer feminist group, use graffiti and street art as media for voicing radical activism, while relying on collective muralism to build a political community. The paper focuses on a small segment of everyday life under socialism – illegal construction in the area of Ljubljana and its rural surroundings. Through this example, it attempts to show the functioning of a socialist society and the discrepancy between state rules, i.e. housing policy, and people’s plans to achieve their particular interests within the socialist ideal of appropriate housing for everybody. Starting from the mid-1950s, urban planners were tasked with creating spatial and housing plans, first for Ljubljana and then gradually also for surrounding rural areas. Although the improvement of housing conditions was one of the Yugoslav social development priorities, it soon became apparent that the housing policy generated inequalities in access to state-built housing. Building an individual house on their own proved to be the only option of housing solution for many. This practice intensified in the second half of the 1960s. At the same time, we can observe an increase of illegal construction. In the early 1970s, the problem was already so significant that it often drew interest of the local authorities. They were concerned especially with lack of adequate infrastructure for these settlements, non-payment of utility charges by the inhabitants, as well as social problems in some of these settlements. In addition, unregulated growth of settlements often occurred on land reserved by the authorities for the construction of other infrastructure. The reasons for illegal construction were ranging from lengthy procedures and high costs for obtaining a building permit, lack of formal spatial planning that would enable legally permissible construction, to lower prices and quicker acquisition of privately owned land in non-building areas and areas unregulated by spatial plans. Some of the illegal construction can be linked to social problems, nonetheless, this type of construction also had its advantages, mainly demonstrated in lower construction costs and greater freedom in choosing the method and type of construction. The practice was also widespread in the construction of holiday cottages. Local authorities were aware of the multifaceted situation, but exercised ineffective control. They took down only a small part of illegal construction and tried to legalize the rest.

Prazgodovinska naselbina na prostoru današnje Ljubljane je bila zgrajena na stičišču pomembnih prometnic in je delovala kot trgovsko središče že od kulture žarnih grobišč. Življenje v njej je potekalo od 13. do 5. st. pr. n. št., pri čemer je od sredine 8. in v 7. st. pr. n. št. opazen drastičen upad v poselitvi, kar se odraža tudi v majhnem številu grobov. Notranja struktura naselbine, odkrite na Tribuni (predel Prul), nam priča o premišljeni, dobro načrtovani ter strnjeni poselitvi. V njej se zrcalijo zametki urbanih elementov, sploh upoštevajoč domnevo, da je akropola stala na strateško pomembnem Grajskem hribu in da je bilo na Tribuni »spodnje mesto« večjega naselbinskega areala, v katerem so živeli in ustvarjali obrtniki (rokodelci) in trgovci. Ob reki Ljubljanici bi smeli pričakovati predel z gospodarskimi objekti oz. delavnicami ter pristan, na območju Poljan pa zaradi rodovitnih evtričnih rjavih tal polja, na katerih so uspevale kultivirane rastline.

Grobišče na Dvorišču SAZU v Ljubljani z več kot 300 žganimi grobovi iz mlajše bronaste in starejše železne dobe je še vedno eno ključnih najdišč za razumevanje gorenjsko-ljubljanske skupine. Nove raziskave na Kongresnem trgu so razkrile grobišče, ki se v mnogo vidikih razlikuje od tistega na Dvorišču SAZU. Prvič so bile v Ljubljani izpričane manjše gomile s prodnatim jedrom, zemljenim plaščem in zunanjim obodnim jarkom iz zgodnje železne dobe. Po večini gre za žarne grobove v središču gomile, izstopa gomila 3 s centralnim grobom in sedmimi pokopi okrog njega. Po načinu pokopa izstopajo trije skeletni grobovi iz 8. st. pr. n. št., ti so v članku tudi podrobneje predstavljeni. Podana sta kratek oris pojava skeletnih grobov v drugih sočasnih železnodobnih skupinah in poskus razlage teh skeletnih pokopov v Ljubljani. Na podlagi analize grobnih najdb in novih radiokarbonskih datacij iz Ljubljane so na kratko predstavljene dopolnitve Gabrovčeve kronološke sheme ljubljanskega grobišča in posledično gorenjsko-ljubljanske skupine, predvsem stopenj Ljubljana II in IIIa. Dopolnitve stopnje Ljubljana II tako v relativnem kot absolutnem kronološkem smislu so ključne za razumevanje začetka pokopavanja na Kongresnem trgu ter razdelitev stopenj Podzemelj 1 in 2.

The Franciscan Museum and Pinacotheca of the Franciscan Friary in the center of Ljubljana represent, together with the renovated library, a newly conceived cultural and art-historical section of the Friary as the mother house of the Slovenian Franciscan Province of the Holy Cross. The library currently holds ca. 70,000 book units, including precious books such as incunabula – one-seventh of all incunabula in the country – and can thus boast the title of Slovenia’s most extensive monastic library. The newly designed museum showcases some of the friary’s key cultural and artistic objects.

Kulturni turizem je ena najstarejših in najbolj uveljavljenih vrst turizma, kar še posebej velja za mestne destinacije, kot je Ljubljana. V tem prispevku obravnavamo kulturni turizem z vidika lokalnega prebivalstva. Z anketnim vprašalnikom smo preverili, kakšno je mnenje prebivalcev o kulturnem turizmu v Ljubljani, koliko koristijo ponudbo, katere izboljšave predlagajo in kakšna je dodana vrednost kulturnega turizma za mesto. Prebivalci so poudarili pozitiven prispevek kulturnega turizma za mesto, čeprav to na področju kulturne ponudbe ne ponuja posebnih ugodnosti za prebivalce. Kot prispevek poudarjajo zlasti živahnost mesta, njegovo internacionalizacijo, torej stik prebivalcev s tujci, in dodano vrednost gospodarstvu, ki vpliva tudi na splošni mestni razvoj.

Po letu 2010 je prišlo do velikega porasta turističnega obiska v mestnih občinah, ki so postale najpomembnejša skupina turističnih občin (z okoli 29 % vseh prihodov turistov in 36 % prihodov tujih turistov v Sloveniji v letu 2019). Velik del rasti turističnega obiska je prispevala prav mestna občina Ljubljana, v kateri je bilo v letu 2019 zabeleženih 18 % vseh prihodov turistov in 23 % prihodov tujih turistov v Sloveniji. Pandemija covida-19 je najbolj prizadela prav mestne občine. Na koncu prispevek izpostavlja, da je na eni strani Ljubljana postala ena najhitreje rastočih in pomembnih turističnih destinacij v Srednji Evropi, na drugi strani pa se povečan turistični obisk Slovenije ni odrazil v obisku drugih mestnih občin, kot so npr. Celje, Murska Sobota, Velenje, Slovenj Gradec in Krško, ki močno zaostajajo tako po številu turistov kot po deležu tujih turistov. To očitno kaže na njihov relativno majhen turistični potencial kot tudi skromno razvitost turistične ponudbe in infrastrukture.

The article consists of two parts. The first covers the history of opera and ballet from its inception in Ljubljana after 1600 to the present. The opera and ballet arts in Ljubljana are still housed in the structure that was constructed in 1892. Since then, with the exception of the period of the First World War, opera and ballet performances in the Slovenian language have been held continuously in Ljubljana. Prispevek obravnava opremo župnijske cerkve sv. Cirila in Metoda za Bežigradom v Ljubljani. Večino opreme, veliki oltar, obhajilno mizo, prižnico, lestenca, orgelsko omaro, stebra za večno luč, oltarček sv. Jožefa, Marijin steber, luči in več manjših izdelkov (npr. okvirje za nekatere slike) je med letoma 1934 in 1956 zasnoval Jože Plečnik, po čigar načrtih je bila zgrajena tudi sama cerkev. Izpostavljena je vloga naročnikov, bežigrajskih župnikov p. Kazimirja Zakrajška, p. Gabrijela Planinška, p. Stanislava Marije Aljančiča in p. Krizologa Zajca. Predstavljena je tudi usoda opreme po prestavitvi cerkve na novo lokacijo v letih 1957–1958.

Za prostor med mestnimi in podeželskimi območji, ki pogosto ni jasno določen, se običajno uporablja izraz »obmestna krajina«. Eden ključnih razlogov za navedeno nejasnost je konceptualno preširoka in geografsko nejasna opredelitev tega prostora. Avtorica se v članku osredotoča na prostorsko določanje obmestne krajine na subregionalni ravni, pri čemer predstavi metodo, ki temelji na prostorskih in demografskih merilih. Prostorsko jasno opredeljena obmestna krajina na subregionalni ravni je lahko v pomoč pri izbiri ustreznih lokalnih in regionalnih pristopov k njenemu razvoju. Avtorica metodo, ki temelji na analizi prekrivanja podatkovnih slojev, preverja z uporabo podatkov, pridobljenih od regionalnih in občinskih uradov v Ljubljani in Edinburgu. Rezultati kažejo, da opisana manj dvoumna prostorska določitev obmestnih krajin zagotavlja boljšo podlago za prostorsko načrtovanje in oblikovanje prostorske politike.

The ill-defined space between urban and rural areas is typically referred to as peri-urban landscape. One key reason for this lack of clarity is the unduly broad scale of conceptual and geographical resolution. This article focuses on its spatial elucidation at a sub-regional scale. It describes a method for delineating peri-urban landscape, based on spatial and demographic criteria. Arguably, spatially explicitly denoted peri-urban landscape on a sub-regional level would help in choosing appropriate local and region al planning approaches and policies for its development. The method, based on an overlay analysis, was tested using datasets from regional and municipal authorities in Ljubljana and Edinburgh. The results indicate that this less ambiguous spatial definition of peri-urban landscape offers a sound basis for planning and policy development.

Behind the scenes of the Congress of Laibach (modern day Ljubljana), a dance form called Deutscher came into existence and for a decade remained, in a specific local version, the most popular dance of bourgeois circles. This paper sheds light on the phenomenon of the Laibacher Deutscher within a broad social and cultural context and political background.

The article focuses on the American-Yugoslav Project in Regional and Urban Planning Studies (AYP) to explore the Ford Foundation's role in the international circulation of urban planning expertise during the Cold War. In operation in Ljubljana, Slovenia, 1966–1976, AYP was a foundation-funded collaboration between Ljubljana's Urban Planning Institute of SR Slovenia and a succession of American universities: Cornell, Wayne State, and Johns Hopkins. Its goal was to bring the American regional planning expertise to Yugoslavia and Europe. Using the lens of network-building, the article highlights the geopolitical motivations of Ford's presence in socialist Yugoslavia before tracing the professional trajectories of AYP's founding members, American geographer Jack C. Fisher and the Slovenian architect Vladimir Braco Mušič. It then analyzes the project as an exemplary 'networking instrument' that connected numerous urban planners across Europe, in turn facilitating the transfer of American cybernetic techniques to Yugoslavia.
