The volumetric solar receiver is an important heat transfer component of the concentrated solar power (CSP) system. Moreover, in order to improve the absorption of concentrated solar radiation, the porous media are widely used in volumetric solar receiver. In recent years, many studies were concerned with the effects of porosity, pore number density and size, Reynolds number, and Darcy number on heat and flow performance in volumetric solar receiver. However, there are few studies on the effects of structure type and geometric parameters on the volumetric effects and the radiation characteristics of a porous volumetric solar receiver with nonuniform heat flux boundary condition. In this contribution, in order to analyze the effects of structures on the volumetric effects and heat transfer performance, we design six types of porous volumetric receiver structures, whereas the volume of different structures keeps consistent. Then, we apply the local non-thermal-equilibrium model and also consider the effect of structure shape on the concentrating solar radiation transport characteristic. Furthermore, we apply the Gaussian distribution model (GDM) to simulate the actual nonuniform heat flux boundary condition. The result shows that drum-type structure (RT-III) has the best heat transfer performance among the six structures; e.g., the outlet average temperature of fluid is up to 851 K when the pore size and porosity of porous media are 2 mm and 0.7, respectively, which is 41 K increased than the scaled cone-type structure. In addition, the pore diameter has less influence on the outlet temperature of fluid, but it has greater influence on the pressure drop. The contribution can provide a reference for this type of solar receiver design and reconstruction.

The occurrence, fate, and environmental risk of 40 pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) from surface waters and sediments were comprehensively investigated in the Beijiang River, Xijiang River, and Maozhou River of the Pearl River basin, South China. Salicylic acid and diclofenac (antiinflammatory drugs), gemfibrozil (a lipid regulator), carbamazepine (an antiepileptic drug), diazepam (a psychoactive drug), and 2-methyl-4-chloro-phenoxyacetic acid (MCPA, a pesticide) were the most ubiquitous compounds in the studied region. The average concentrations of detected PhACs in surface waters and sediments ranged from 0.17 to 19.1 ng/L and 0.10 to 10.4 ng/g, respectively. Meanwhile, PhACs concentration in surface waters and sediments varied greatly among and within the Beijiang River, Xijiang River, and Maozhou River. The largest annual flux of PhACs of the Xijiang River and Beijiang River was more than 11 000 kg per annum, whereas only 25.7 kg/a in the Maozhou River. In addition, the estimated emissions of PhACs in the Beijiang River, Xijiang River, and Maozhou River ranged respectively from 0.28 to 4.22 kg/a, 0.12 to 6.72 kg/a, and 6.66 to 91.0 kg/a, and the back-estimated usage varied with a range from 12.0 to 293 kg/a, 6.79 to 944 kg/a, 368 to 17 459 kg/a. Moreover, the emissions of PhACs showed a close relationship with the gross domestic product (GDP) of each city along the Pearl River. The environmental risk assessment suggested that diazepam and ibuprofen had a moderate risk in this region. [Figure not available: see fulltext.]

Fluoride (F) is a ubiquitous aquatic environmental pollutant and co-exists with other pollutants to form combined pollution. Selenium (Se) is beneficial at low levels yet toxic at high levels and can interact with some metals. However, the interactive effects of F and Se on the liver in fish remains enigmatic. In this study, zebrafish (Danio rerio) were exposed to F (80 mg/L) and dietary seleno-l-methionine (Se-Met, 0.25, 0.5 and 1.0 μg/g dry weight) alone or in combination for 90 d. The results indicated that co-treatment to F and Se-Met attenuated the histopathological damage, oxidative stress, and inflammatory in the liver, compared with the F treatment alone. Meanwhile, dietary Se-Met treatment improved F-induced intestinal barrier dysfunction, increased the transcripts of tight junction proteins (ZO-1, Claudin-1 and Occludin), and restored the homeostasis of intestinal microbiota. Moreover, dietary Se-Met ameliorated F-induced intestinal and liver inflammation by inhibiting lipopolysaccharide (LPS) levels and transcripts of TLR4 and p65 in the intestine and liver. This study manifested that Se-Met alleviates F-induced liver and intestinal injury when both co-occur at specific concentrations, and that the gut-liver axis pathway may serve as a mechanistic base for these alleviative effects.

Cyclophosphamide, one of the earliest prescribed alkylating anticancer drugs, has been frequently detected in aquatic environments. However, its effects on fish behavior and associated mechanisms remain largely unknown. In this study, the behaviors, neurochemicals, and gut microbiota of adult zebrafish were investigated after 2 months of exposure to CP at 0.05, 0.5, 5, and 50 µg/L. Behavioral assays revealed that CP increased locomotion and anxiety, and decreased the cognition of zebrafish. The alteration of neurotransmitters and related gene expressions in the dopamine and gamma-aminobutyric acid pathways induced by CP may be responsible for the observed changes in locomotion and cognition of adult zebrafish. Meanwhile, CP increased the anxiety of adult zebrafish through the serotonin, acetylcholine, and histamine pathways in the brain. In addition, increased abundances of Fusobacteriales, Reyanellales, Staphylococcales, Rhodobacterals, and Patescibateria in the intestine at the CP-50 treatment were observed. The study has demonstrated that CP affects the locomotion, anxiety, and cognition in zebrafish, which might be linked with the dysfunction of neurochemicals in the brain. This study further suggests that the gut-brain axis might interact to modulate fish behaviors upon exposure to CP (maybe other organic pollutants). Further research is warranted to test this hypothesis.

Sediments are the major sink for selenium (Se) in aquatic environments. Se speciation in sediments is crucial for its bioavailability and the toxicity in benthos but this is relatively understudied. In this study, selenite (Se(IV)) and seleno-L-methionine (Se-Met) were respectively added to sediments for 90 and 7 days, and the accumulation and depuration of Se in the oligochaete Lumbriculus variegatus was investigated. The background levels of Se in the river sediments, fish flakes, and L. variegatus were also detected. Without the presence of worms, the levels of Se(IV) in the sediments were relatively stable within 7 d but showed a decreasing trend during the 90 d of aging. In contrast, Se-Met in the sediments showed a sharp decrease within 3 d of aging. The LC50-96h values of Se(IV) and Se-Met in L. variegatus were 372.6 and 9.4 µg/g. Interestingly, the dominant Se species in Se(IV)- or Se-Met-treated L. variegatus was Se-Met, whose levels were increased with time in 7 days of exposure. Se was barely depurated from L. variegatus during the 8 d of depuration period. This study has provided indispensable data on the levels of total Se in the abiotic and biotic matrices and the biodynamics of Se in a representative benthos, which could better understand the ecological risk of Se to the freshwater benthic communities.

Excess Cu and Zn can cause many adverse effects in fish. However, few studies have addressed the effects of dietary Cu and Zn on antioxidant physiology and immunity and the underlying mechanisms in fishes. In this study, accumulation of Cu and Zn, effects on the antioxidant enzymes and the transcriptional expressions of immune-related genes were examined in the Oreochromis niloticus fed the Cu and/or Zn enriched duckweed. The results showed that the liver and intestine had the highest accumulation of Cu2+ and Zn2+ while the muscle had the lowest accumulation of these two metals. The activities of SOD, CAT, GPx and the contents of GSH, GSSG in the liver of all treatment groups were significantly decreased compared to the control group. MDA content was significantly elevated in all treatment groups after feeding for 21 days, implying lipid peroxidation in the liver. Elevated concentrations of dietary selenium (Se) cause abnormalities and extirpation of fish inhabiting in Se-contaminated environments. However, its effect on fish behavior and the underlying mechanisms remain largely unknown. In this study, two-month-old zebrafish (Danio rerio) was fed seleno-l-methionine (Se-Met) at environmentally relevant concentrations (i.e., control (2.61), low (5.43), medium (12.16), and high (34.61) μg Se/g dry weight (dw), respectively, corresponding to the C, L, M, and H treatments) for 60 days. Targeted metabolomics, histopathological, and targeted transcriptional endpoints were compared to behavioral metrics to evaluate the effects of dietary exposure to Se-Met . The results showed that the levels of total Se and malondialdehyde in fish brains were increased in a dose-dependent pattern. Meanwhile, mitochondrial damages and decreased activities of the mitochondria respiratory chain complexes were observed in the neurons at the M and H treatments. In addition, dietary Se-Met affected neurotransmitters, metabolites, and transcripts of the genes associated with the dopamine, serotonin, gamma-aminobutyric acid, acetylcholine, and histamine signaling pathways in zebrafish brains at the H treatments. The total swimming distance and duration in the Novel Arm were lowered in fish from the H treatment. This study has demonstrated that dietary Se-Met affects the ultrastructure of the zebrafish brain, neurotransmitters, and associated fish behaviors and may help enhance adverse outcome pathways for neurotransmitter-behavior key events in zebrafish.

The individual and combined toxicity of antibiotics and nanoplastics in marine organisms has received increasing attention. However, many studies have been mostly focused on the impacts on the directly exposed generation (F0). In this study, intergenerational effects of sulfamethazine (SMZ) and nanoplastic fragments (polystyrene, PS) on the growth and the gut microbiota of marine medaka (Oryzias melastigma) were investigated. The results showed that parental exposure to dietary SMZ (4.62 mg/g) alone and PS (3.45 mg/g) alone for 30 days decreased the body weight (by 13.41% and 34.33%, respectively) and altered the composition of gut microbiota in F1 males (two months after hatching). Interestingly, parental exposure to the mixture of SMZ and PS caused a more modest decrease in the body weight of F1 males than the PS alone (15.60% vs 34.33%). The hepatic igf1 level and the relative abundance of the host energy metabolism related phylum Bacteroidetes for the SMZ + PS group were significantly higher than those for the PS group (igf1, increased by 97.1%; Bacteroidetes, 2.876% vs 0.375%), suggesting that the parentally derived mixture of SMZ and PS might influence the first microbial colonization of gut in a different way to the PS alone. This study contributes to a better understanding of the long-term risk of antibiotics and nanoplastics to marine organisms.

Cu in surface waters has been demonstrated to affect aquatic animals at ecologically relevant concentrations. However, its effects on reproductive endocrine system and the underlying toxicological mechanisms are largely unknown. In this study, zebrafish (Danio rerio) were exposed to 0, 10, 20, 40 μg/L of Cu for 30 days. Growth, gonad histopathology, the hormone levels and the transcriptional profiles of genes in the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis in both sexes were examined. The results indicated that body weight was significantly reduced, the gonadal development was affected, and the levels of E2, T and 11-KT were remarkably disturbed in Cu-exposed fish. Moreover, the expression profiles of steroidogenesis-related genes in gonad (3βhsd, 17βhsd, cyp11a1, cyp17, cyp19a, lhr, fshr, hmgra and star) and in brains (ar, cyp19b, erα, er2β, lhβ, fshβ, gnrh2, gnrh3, gnrhr1, gnrh2 and gnrh4) displayed alterations after exposure to Cu. These results demonstrated that Cu could suppress the growth of zebrafish and significantly affect the reproductive biology in both sexes by damaging the structure of the gonads, altering the steroid hormone levels and the expressions of endocrine-related genes in HPG of zebrafish. This study suggests that Cu adversely affects the reproductive endocrine system in zebrafish and could pose a potential threat to fish populations inhabiting Cu-contaminated waters.

Bohai Bay, in the western region of northeastern China's Bohai Sea, receives water from large rivers containing various pollutants including dioxin-like compounds (DLCs). This study used the established zebrafish (Danio rerio) model, its known developmental toxicity endpoints and sensitive molecular analyses to evaluate sediments near and around an industrial effluent site in Bohai Bay. The primary objective was to assess the efficacy of rapid biological detection methods as an addition to chemical analyses. Embryos were exposed to various concentrations of sediment extracts as well as a 2, 3, 7, 8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) positive control. Exposure to sediment extract nearest the discharge site (P1) resulted in the most severe- and highest rates of change in embryos and larvae, suggesting that DLC contaminated sediment probably did not occur much beyond it. P1 extract resulted in concentration dependent increases in mortality and pericardial edema. Its highest concentration caused up-regulation of P-450 (CYP)-1A1(CYP1A) mRNA expression at 72 h post fertilization (hpf), an increase in its expression in gill arches as observed by whole mount in situ hybridization, and an increased signal in the Tg(cyp1a: mCherry) transgenic line. The pattern and magnitude of response was very similar to that of TCDD and supported the presence of DLCs in these sediment samples. Follow-up chemical analysis confirmed this presence and identified H7CDF, O8CDF and O8CDD as the main components in P1 extract. This study validates the use of biological assays as a rapid, sensitive, and cost-effective method to evaluate DLCs and their effects in sediment samples. Additionally, it provides support for the conclusion that DLCs have limited remobilization capacity in marine sediments. Natural and synthetic steroid hormones have been detected in swine farm wastewaters (SFWs) and receiving waters. However, little is known on their potential endocrine disrupting effects on fish population in receiving rivers. Here we investigated the concentrations of androgens and estrogens in the SFWs and the receiving waters. In addition, the endocrine disrupting effects of SFWs on wild western mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) were also analyzed by assessing the sex ratio, secondary sex characteristics and transcriptional expression of genes related to the endocrine system. Chemical analysis showed the maximum concentration of total androgens reached 1375.7 ng L−1 in the SFWs and 1020.8 ng L−1 in receiving river waters. A total of 3552 adult G. affinis were collected from the Lianhe River (Guangdong, China), which was heavily impacted by SFWs, before and after the Ban of Swine Farming (BSF) in the river basin. The results showed the presence of male-biased G. affinis populations and masculinized anal fins and hemal spines of females at all contaminated sites prior to BSF. In addition, the transcription of vitellogenin (vtg) was inhibited by SFWs by 99.9% in the females from one sampling site. In contrast, the adverse effects on the females were significantly decreased after BSF. Redundant and path analyses showed that skewed sex ratios of fish populations, masculinized secondary sex characteristics of females and the decrease of vtg transcripts of females were well correlated with the concentrations of androgens in the receiving waters. The findings from this study suggest that SFW can cause masculinization effects of wild G. affinis populations. Understanding cadmium (Cd) extractability and transfer in soil-plant system is crucial for the evaluation of the remediation effect of Cd-contaminated soils. However, knowledge on the effects of different phosphorus (P) fertilizers on Cd uptake in plants, root morphology, and Cd extractability in rhizosphere soils remains very limited. In this study, a five-year field experiment was conducted to evaluate the impacts of four P fertilizers (i.e. calcium superphosphate, calcium magnesium phosphate, monopotassium phosphate, and compound fertilizer) on Cd uptake in maize (Zea mays L.), root morphology, and Cd extractability in rhizospheric acidic soils contaminated with Cd. The results showed that compared to the control, the contents of rhizospheric DTPA-Cd were respectively 18-40% and 8-29% lowered by the calcium magnesium phosphate and monopotassium phosphate, but 21-59% and 10-36% elevated by the calcium superphosphate and compound fertilizer. Similar effects of P fertilizers were observed on exchangeable Cd. Furthermore, the altered levels of the DTPA-Cd and exchangeable Cd in the rhizospheric soils were greater than those in the non-rhizospheric soils. Moreover, different P fertilization regimes altered the contents of Cd in maize tissues (roots, stems, leaves, and grains), and the alterations were closely related to the variation of DTPA-Cd and exchangeable Cd in the rhizospheric soils. Meanwhile, different P fertilization regimes enhanced root morphological parameters (root length, surface area, and volume), and the activities of urease and surcase. In general, the lowest concentrations of soil DTPA-Cd and Cd in maize tissues were found in the treatments with calcium magnesium phosphate. This study has demonstrated that the calcium magnesium phosphate can be used as a potential amendment agent for the acidic Cd-contaminated soils cultivated with maize.

In recent years, the ecological risks of plastics to marine environments and organisms have attracted increasing attention, especially the leachates from plastics. However, a comprehensive knowledge about the leaching characteristics and subsequent toxicological effects of leachates is still sparse. In this study, 15 different plastic products were immersed in simulated seawater and fish digest for 16 h. The leachates were analyzed through non-target and target analyses and their toxicological signatures were assessed by bioassays. In total, 240 additives were identified from the plastic leachates, among which plasticizers represented the most (16.7%), followed by antioxidants (8.7%) and flame retardants (7.1%). Approximately 40% of plastic leachates exhibited significant inhibitory effects on the bioluminescence using a recombinant luminescent assay. In addition, both the hyperactive and hypoactive behaviors were displayed in the larvae of marine medaka (Oryzias melastigma) exposed to some plastic leachates. In general, the number and amount of identified compounds under simulated fish digest were less than those under simulated seawater. However, the simulated fish digest leachates triggered higher toxicity. Redundancy analysis demonstrated that identified additives did not adequately explain the toxicological effects. Future research should focus on the identification of more additives in the plastic leachates and their potential ecological risks.

Plastics have been recognized as a serious threat to the environment. Besides their own toxicity, microplastics can interact with other environmental pollutants, acting as carriers and potentially modulating their toxicity. In this study, the toxicity of polystyrene (PS) microplastic fragments (plain PS; carboxylated PS, PS-COOH and aminated PS, PS-NH2) and triphenyl phosphate (TPhP) (an emerging organophosphate flame retardant) at the environmentally relevant concentrations to the marine medaka (Oryzias melastigma) larvae was investigated. Larvae were exposed to 20 μg/L of microplastic fragments or 20 and 100 μg/L of TPhP or a combination of both for 7 days. The results showed that the three microplastics did not affect the larval locomotor activity. For TPhP, the larval moving duration and distance moved were significantly decreased by the TPhP exposure, with a maximum decrease of 43.5% and 59.4% respectively. Exposure to 100 μg/L TPhP respectively down-regulated the expression levels of sine oculis homeobox homologue 3 (six3) and short wavelength-sensitive type 2 (sws2) by 19.1% and 41.7%, suggesting that TPhP might disturb eye development and photoreception and consequently the low locomotor activity in the larvae. Interestingly, during the binary mixture exposure, the presence of PS, PS-COOH or PS-NH2 reversed the low locomotor activity induced by 100 μg/L TPhP to the normal level. Relative to the larvae from the 100 μg/L TPhP group, the movement duration and distance moved were increased by approximately 60% and 100%, respectively, in the larvae from the TPhP + PS, TPhP + PS-COOH and TPhP + PS-NH2 groups. However, the gene expression profiles were distinct among the fish from the TPhP + PS, TPhP + PS-COOH and TPhP + PS-NH2 groups, implying different mechanisms underlying the reversal of the locomotor activity. The findings in this study challenge the general view that microplastics aggravate the toxicity of the adsorbed pollutants, and help better understand the environmental risk of microplastic pollution.

Androgens and estrogens often co-exist in aquatic environments and pose potential risks to fish populations. However, little is known about the endocrine disrupting effects of the mixture of androgens and estrogens in fish. In this study, transcriptional level of target genes related to the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal-liver (HPGL) axis, sex hormone level, VTG protein concentration, histology and secondary sex characteristic were assessed in the ovaries and livers of adult female western mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) exposed to 17β-estradiol (E2), testosterone (T), and mixtures of E2 and T for 91 days. The results showed that the transcriptional expression of cytochrome P450, family 19, subfamily A, polypeptide 1a (Cyp19a1a) was suppressed in the 200 ng/L T treatment and the 50 ng/L E2 + 200 ng/L T treatment in the ovaries. Steroidogenic acute regulatory protein (Star) and Cyp11a1 showed a similar expression pattern in the T treatment to its corresponding T + E2 mixtures. In the ovaries, the concentrations of 17β-estradiol and testosterone were decreased in most treatments compared with the solvent control. VTG protein was induced in all steroid treatment. However, exposure to T or E2 + T mixture did not cause the abnormal cells of the ovaries and livers and an extension of the anal fins in female G. affinis. This study demonstrates that chronic exposure to E2, T and their mixtures affects the transcripts of genes in the HPGL axis, steroid hormone level and VTG protein concentration in the ovaries and livers, but fails to cause the histopathological effect of the ovaries and livers and alter the morphology of the anal fins in G. affinis.

Benzodiazepines (BZDs) are one of the most widely prescribed psychoactive drugs, however their persistence in the receiving environment has raised great concerns about their potential ecological risks. Here we investigated the occurrence, fate and mass loading of 17 BZDs and their 3 transformation products in 11 wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Guangdong province, China. A total of 10 BZDs and 1 transformation product were found in the WWTPs influents, effluents and excess sludge, with concentrations reaching up to 44.5 ng/L (clozapine), 27.1 ng/L (oxazepam) and 62.9 ng/g (clozapine), respectively. The overall removal efficiency varied widely from negative to complete removal in these 11 WWTPs. Mass balance analysis of two representative WWTPs (WWTPA and WWTPB) with different treatment processes showed that their removals were mainly attributed to the sludge adsorption and biodegradation/biotransformation. The total usage of detected BZDs was estimated to be 185 kg/y in Guangdong province, China, while the total emission was 143 kg/y. Based on sewage epidemiology method, the total back-estimated consumption and emissions of BZDs and their transformation products in one district of Guangzhou (WWTPC service area) were 1012 mg/d/1000 people and 10.1 mg/d/1000 people, respectively. The findings from this study demonstrate the persistence of BZDs in WWTPs and also provide basis for further investigation into the potential ecological risks from this group of chemicals.

Sesamin is the main lignan in sesame and is reported to have many benefits and medicinal properties. However, its protective effects against fluoride-induced damage in the liver of zebrafish have not been elucidated. Our previous studies found that fluoride exposure caused damage to the liver of zebrafish. In the study, the effects of sesamin on oxidative stress and immune damage in liver of zebrafish exposed to fluoride were measured. The results indicated that fluoride exposure damaged the microstructures of liver, increased significantly the oxidative stress, decreased remarkably the activities of ACP, AKP, and LZM, and affected obviously the expressions of immune-related genes. Treatment with sesamin remarkably attenuated fluoride-induced liver damage in a dose-dependent manner, indicated by the histopathological observation. Furthermore, sesamin treatment also significantly inhibited the production of ROS and oxidative stress, such as the decrease of lipid peroxidation level and the increase of CAT and SOD activities in liver. Sesamin treatment reversed the activities of immune-related enzymes and the expressions of immune-related genes in liver exposed to fluoride. These findings suggested that sesamin could protect the liver from fluoride-induced immune damage by oxidative stress downstream-mediated changes in reversing the activities of immune-related enzymes and the expressions of immune-related genes. Taken together, sesamin plays an important role in maintaining hepatic health and preventing liver from toxic damage caused by fluoride.

Little is known about the molecular effects of progestins on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) and hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axes in fish prior to sexual differentiation. In this study, the effects of norethindrone (NET) on the ontogeny of HPG- and HPA-related genes in zebrafish embryo/early larvae prior to sexual differentiation were evaluated. Embryo/larvae were exposed to different concentrations (5, 50, 500 ng/L) of NET for 6 days. The levels of the transcripts of the genes closely related to the HPG and HPA axes were determined daily during 3 stages (embryo, embryo/larvae transition, and early larvae). The results showed that most genes were up-regulated and the ontogeny of genes in the HPA axis was earlier than that of HPG axis, especially for the upstream genes of both the HPG (gnrh2, gnrh3, fshb, lhb) and the HPA (crh, pomc, star) axes. In contrast, the transcriptional expressions of genes of the cortisol/stress pathway (cyp11b, mr) were inhibited and those of the progesterone pathway were not affected. More importantly, NET exposure induced the expressions of the genes (esr1, vtg1, hsd17b3, hsd11b2, ar) that are closely related to the steroid hormone pathways in the embryos/larvae stages, implying a precocious effects of NET in zebrafish. This study demonstrates that NET alters the expression of HPA- and HPG-axes related genes in zebrafish at early stages, pointing to the need for the same type of analysis during the zebrafish gonadal differentiation window.

Residues and distribution of neonicotinoid insecticides (NEOs) in soil-water-sediment systems of the urban and rural areas of Guangzhou, South China were investigated. A total of 104 soil samples from 7 different functional zones and 29 water/sediment samples from creeks were collected. The results showed that at least one neonicotinoid insecticide was detected in all samples. The summed levels of five target neonicotinoids (∑5neonics) were in the range of 0.003–229 ng/g dw for soil samples, 7.94–636 ng/L for water samples, and 0.017–31.3 ng/g dw for sediment samples, with a geometric mean of 0.59 ng/g dw, 153 ng/L and 1.11 ng/g dw, respectively. Soils from agricultural areas contained the highest residual NEOs, followed by commercial, traffic, residential, industrial, educational zones and parks. Among the seven different functional zones studied, imidacloprid was the most dominant NEO in the agricultural areas and commercial zones, whereas acetamiprid was dominant in the other five functional zones with different land-use types. Thiamethoxam and acetamiprid were the main NEOs in water and sediment samples collected from 29 creeks. The pollution of NEOs in soils, water and sediments from rural areas was higher than that in the counterparts from urban areas. Residual concentration of NEOs detected in soils, water and sediments showed significant correlations with each other. The distribution of NEOs in soil-water-sediment systems indicated that NEOs tended to concentrate in water, followed by sediments and soils, especially in urban areas. An evaluation of the exposure to the current level of the ∑5NEOs in Guangzhou suggests a significant risk for aquatic and soil organisms, particularly under chronic exposures. The results of the present study offer valuable data to better understand the contamination and ecological risks of neonicotinoid insecticides in the rapidly developing urbanized region of South China.

Swine farm wastewaters (SFWs) are generally discharged either directly into nearby rivers or into fish ponds as a source of fertilizer/food for aquaculture in China. SFWs contain various contaminants including steroid hormones. However, there is an extreme paucity of data on their effects in fish populations. Here we investigated the endocrine disrupting effects of SFWs in G. affinis from 2 rivers (7 sites) and 2 fish ponds (2 sites) receiving SFWs and a reference site in Guangdong Province, China. In this study, a total number of 3078 adult western mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) were collected and the sex ratio was determined. In addition, secondary sexual characteristics were examined and the transcriptional levels of target genes were analyzed. The results showed the mosquitofish populations had a significant increase in male-to-female ratio from 7 sites (including 2 fish ponds) among the 9 sampling sites. The hemal spines of females were masculinized at most sites while the hemal spines of males were feminized at approximately half of the sites (including 2 fish ponds). Significant reduction in vitellogenin (Vtg) mRNA expression was observed in females from 2 sites (including RS7) while elevated Vtg mRNA expression was noticed in males from 2 sites along the rivers (including RS7). Redundancy analysis showed that androgens in the water samples were closely related with male-to-female ratio in the mosquitofish populations and the masculinized hemal spines of females. The findings from this study demonstrated that discharge of SFWs could result in occurrence of both masculinized females and feminized males in mosquitofish population. Cyclophosphamide (CP) is a broad-spectrum anticancer drug and has been frequently detected in aquatic environments due to its incomplete removal by wastewater treatment facilities and slow degradation in waters. Its toxicity in fish remains largely unknown. In this study, zebrafish eggs4 h post fertilization (hpf) were exposed to CP at the concentrations from 0.5 to 50.0 μg/L until 168 hpf, and its toxicity was evaluated by biochemical, transcriptomic, and behavioral approaches. Selenite(IV) and selenate(VI) are the major forms of Se in aquatic ecosystem. In this study, Pseudorasbora parva were exposed to 10, 200 and 1000 μg L−1 selenite and selenate for 28 days. Selenium accumulation, antioxidant enzyme levels, glutathione concentrations, lipid peroxidation and histology were evaluated in livers following exposure. Our results showed that Se(IV) and Se(VI) caused different accumulation patterns in the liver, with a more rapid accumulation of Se with Se(IV) treatment. Both Se species increased hepatic lipid peroxidation after 14 and 28 d (~ 30%). Among the antioxidants examined, the activity of SOD (except day 28) and the cellular levels of GSH were induced by 72–137% at lower concentrations, while the activity of GST was at least 24% lower than that of the control at 200 and 1000 μg L−1 for both Se species at all sampling points. Both forms of Se reduced the hepatosomatic index at 1000 μg L−1 after 28 d. In addition, marked histopathological alterations (10–31%) were observed in the liver of P. parva after exposure to both Se species, with higher frequency in the Se(IV) exposed fish. Liver local necrosis was observed only in the liver of fish exposed to 1000 μg L−1 of Se(IV) (~ 20%). Our results suggest that the ecological impacts of dissolved Se in this freshwater species may also contribute to overall toxicity.

Fluoxetine is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor used as an antidepressant and has been frequently detected in aquatic environments. However, its effects in fish from Asia remain relatively less studied. In this study, the topmouth gudgeon Pseudorasbora parva was exposed to 0, 50, and 200 µg/L of fluoxetine for 4 h and 42 d. The effects of fluoxetine on biometrics were compared to biochemical endpoints indicative of stress in different fish tissues (brain, liver, gills and intestine) following exposures. In fish exposed for 42 d, lipid peroxidation endpoints were enhanced 80% in the liver and gills. Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity was increased 40% after exposure to 50 µg/L and 55% at 200 µg/L following 4 h exposure. In contrast AChE was increased 26% (at 50 µg/L) after 42 d of exposures. Enhanced ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase activity (EROD) was detected only in fish exposed to 50 µg/L of fluoxetine for 4 h. The activity of α-glucosidase (α-Glu) was also induced (at 200 µg/L) after 4 h of exposure. After 4 h of exposure, the activities of proteases in the intestine were generally inhibited at 200 µg/L. Both 4 h and 42 d exposures resulted in an increased hepatosomatic index (HSI) but did not affect the condition factor (CF). Our results demonstrate that fluoxetine significantly altered biochemical endpoints in P. parva after acute exposure and the morphological changes in liver size were not observed until 42 d of exposure.

Synthetic progestins are widely used in human and veterinary medicine. They can enter aquatic environments mainly via wastewater discharge and agricultural runoff, thus affecting fish populations in receiving waters. Here, we investigated the chronic effects of dydrogesterone (DDG) on zebrafish from 21 to 140 days post-fertilization (dpf) at 3.39, 33.1, and 329 ng L–1. The results showed that the male ratio increased with the exposure concentration, and after 120 days of exposure to 329 ng L–1, 98% of the fish were males. The DDG exposure during sex differentiation significantly increased the transcription of dmrt1 (1.83-fold) and apoptosis-related genes but suppressed the transcription of cyp19a1a (3.16-fold). Histological analysis showed that the exposure to DDG at 329 ng L–1 caused 61.5% of mature spermatocytes in males, while the exposure to DDG at 33.1 ng L–1 resulted in 14.7% of atretic follicles in females. In recent years, many new chemicals have been synthesized from biomass with an aim for sustainable development by replacing the existing toxic chemicals with those having similar properties and applications. However, the effects of these new chemicals on aquatic organisms remain relatively unknown. In this study, the effects of bisphenol A (BPA) and lignin-derived bisphenol (LD-BP, a BPA analogue) on Daphnia magna were evaluated. The animals were exposed to BPA, LD-BP, and their binary mixture at concentrations (2-2000 μg L-1) for 21 days. The expression of various biochemical markers and the effects on growth, molting, and reproduction parameters were examined. The results showed that the weight of daphnids significantly increased after exposure to BPA, LD-BP, and the binary mixture relative to that of the control animals. The activity of superoxide dismutase was significantly inhibited by LD-BP and the binary mixture. At the highest exposure concentration of the binary mixture, the activities of acetylcholinesterase and α-glucosidase, fecundity, and the number of neonates per brood were significantly altered. Antibiotics and nanoplastics are two prevalent pollutants in oceans, posing a great threat to marine ecosystems. As antibiotics and nanoplastics are highly bioconcentrated in lower trophic levels, evaluating their impacts on marine organisms via dietary exposure route is of great importance. In this study, the individual and joint effects of dietborne sulfamethazine (SMZ) and nanoplastic fragments (polystyrene, PS) in marine medaka (Oryzias melastigma) were investigated. After 30 days of dietary exposure, 4.62 mg/g SMZ decreased the Chao1 index (60.86% for females and 26.85% for males) and the Shannon index (68.95% for females and 65.05% for males) and significantly altered the structure of gut microbial communities in both sexes. The female fish exposed to 4.62 mg/g SMZ exhibited higher intestinal sod (43.5%), cat (38.5%) and gpx (39.6%) transcripts, indicating oxidative stress in the gut. PS alone at 3.45 mg/g slightly altered the composition of the gut microbiota. Interestingly, the mixture of SMZ and PS caused more modest effects on the gut microbiota and intestinal antioxidant physiology than the SMZ alone, suggesting that the presence of PS might alleviate the intestinal toxicity of SMZ in a scenario of dietary co-exposure. This study helps better understand the risk of antibiotics and nanoplastics to marine ecosystems.

Neonicotinoids (NEOs) are the most widely used pesticides and have posed a serious threat to human health. However, data on human exposure to NEOs are extremely scarce. To bridge this gap, human exposure potential of NEOs through drinking water consumption and percutaneous penetration was evaluated with the influences of 17 age groups, 4 seasons, 6 regions, and 2 genders. The results showed that drinking water in the present study had an upper middle level of NEO contamination. Anthropogenic activity and weather condition played important roles in the regional distribution of NEOs in tap water. For both children and adults, NEOs intake from drinking water exposure (NDE) and percutaneous exposure (NPE) in the south regions of China are significantly higher than those in the north regions, while the order of NDE and NPE by season is summer > spring = autumn > winter. Furthermore, human age and gender also have remarkable impacts on NDE and NPE. The age groups of children subjected to the highest NDE and NPE were 9 months – 2 years old and 9–12 years old, respectively. This study provides insights into the role of seasonal and regional influence, age and gender in the risk of drinking water and percutaneous exposure to NEOs.

Levonorgestrel (LNG) and dydrogesterone (DDG) are two commonly used synthetic progestins that have been detected in aquatic environments. They could affect fish sex differentiation, but the underlying mechanisms remain unknown. Here we investigated the effects of LNG (5 ng L-1 and 50 ng L-1), DDG (100 ng L-1) and their mixtures on gonadal differentiation and sex determination in zebrafish at transcriptomic and histological levels from 2 hours post-fertilization (eleutheroembryos) to 144 days post-fertilization (sexual maturity). Germ cell development and oogenesis pathways were significantly enriched in LNG and the mixture of LNG and DDG treatments, while insulin and apoptosis pathways in the DDG treatment. LNG and the mixture of LNG and DDG strongly decreased transcripts of germ cell development and oogenesis related genes, while DDG increased the transcripts of insulin and apoptosis related genes at 28 days post fertilization (dpf) and 35 dpf. Furthermore, DDG caused ∼ 90% males, and LNG and the mixture of LNG and DDG resulted in 100% males on all sampling dates. Specifically, most males in LNG and the mixture of LNG and DDG treatments were "Type I" males without juvenile oocytes at 28 dpf and 35 dpf, while those in DDG treatment were "Type II" and "Type III" males with a few juvenile oocytes. These results indicated that LNG and DDG promoted testicular differentiation via different pathways to cause male bias. LNG and DDG mixtures have similar effect on testicular differentiation to LNG alone. The findings from this study could have significant ecological implications to fish populations.

Medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) is a widely used synthetic progestin in contraception pills and hormone replacement therapy. However, its effects on eye growth and development and function were largely unknown. In this study, the transcription of genes in the Notch signaling pathway and the visual cycle network were evaluated after chronic MPA exposure at 4.32 (L), 42.0 (M), and 424 (H) ng L−1 for 120 days in zebrafish. Meanwhile, the histology of the eyes was also examined. Transcriptional results showed that MPA at all three concentrations significantly increased the transcription of notch1a, dll4, jag1a, ctbp1 and rbpjb (key genes in the Notch signaling pathway) in the eyes of females. The up-regulation of noth1a, ctbp1 and kat2b was also observed in the eyes of males exposed to MPA at 424 ng L−1. In the visual cycle pathway, MPA increased the transcription of opn1sw1, opn1sw2, arr3a and rpe65a in the eyes of females from the M and H treatments. Histopathological analysis showed that exposure to 42.0 ng L−1 of MPA increased the thicknesses of inner nuclear layer in females and outer segment in males. Moreover, exposure to 424 ng L−1 of MPA increased the lens diameter in females. These results indicated that chronic MPA exposure affected the transcription of genes in the Notch signaling and in the visual cycle pathways, resulting in overgrowth of the eyes and interference of the eye functions. This study suggests that MPA pose a risk to fitness and survival of zebrafish in areas where MPA contamination exists.

Excess selenium entering the aquatic environment from anthropogenic activities has been associated with developmental abnormalities in fish including skeletal deformities of the head and spine. However, mechanisms of this developmental toxicity have not been well-characterized. In this study, Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes) embryos were exposed to seleno-l-methionine (Se-Met) in a range of concentrations. Gene expression was evaluated for sex-determining region Y (SRY)-related box (Sox9a and Sox9b), runt-related transcription factor 2 (Runx2), and melatonin receptor (Mtr). Alterations in the length of Meckel's cartilage, tail curvature, and decreased calcification were observed in skeletal stains at 10- and 22-days post-fertilization (dpf). Embryonic exposure of Osterix-mCherry transgenic medaka resulted in fewer teeth. Sox9a and Sox9b were up-regulated, while Runx2 and Mtr were down-regulated by Se-Met prior to hatch. Whole mount in situ hybridization (WISH) localized gene expression to areas observed to be affected in vivo. In addition, Se-Met exposures of a Mtr morpholino (Mtr-MO) as well as Luzindole exposed embryos developed similar skeletal malformations, supporting involvement of Mtr. These findings demonstrate that Se-Met modulates expression of key genes involved in chondrogenic differentiation and bone formation during development.
