7. The Effect of Small Molecular Compounds in Coal on Quick Direct Coal Liquefaction at a High Temperature.

Abstract

The effect of small molecular compounds in coal on quick direct coal liquefaction at high temperature was studied. The results showed that extraction with tetrahydrofuran just removed a portion of organic compounds, which were free or embedded in the macromolecular network structure in coal, without changing the macromolecular network of coal. However, removal of small molecular compounds in coal influenced the pyrolysis behavior and liquefaction performance of coal. The extracted coal exhibited better liquefaction activity in good donor solvent. The liquefaction conversion and yield of oils were higher than that of raw coal. The reason was that extraction with tetrahydrofuran made the relaxation of coal macromolecular network, and increased average pore size of extracted coal, which favored the diffusion of hydrogen-donating solvent into coal macromolecular network, thus increased the probability of collision of radicals and active hydrogen. The quick liquefaction experiment of extracted coal in poor hydrogen-donating solvents showed that the small molecular compounds played an important role as hydrogen donor during the quick liquefaction at high temperature without external active hydrogen resource. 9. Determination of the Density and Viscosity of Coal Liquefaction Oil Distillates from China.

Abstract

Density/viscosity of Shengli and Shenhua coal liquefaction oil distillates from China was measured; and the relationship of density/viscosity with the end boiling point was regressed. The result indicated that the influence of end boiling point for density/viscosity was obvious for the distillates with end boiling point <200°C and >280°C, but not much influence on the distillate with a boiling range of 200–280°C. The density of two coal liquefaction oils linearly decreased with the increasing of temperature, and could be regressed as ρ = At + B. The relationship between volume expansion coefficient and the linear coefficient α = −A/B was also derived. The influence of end boiling point on viscosity was small when the distillates were <300°C, but prominent as they were >300°C. Viscosity dropped down with the temperature increasing. The viscosity-temperature property of light oil was better than that of medium oil and heavy oil. The relationship between viscosity and temperature conformed to the Andrade correlation. Abstract

The reaction between HS- and pentavalent vanadium V(V) and its effect factors, such as reactant concentration, reaction temperature, and the pH value in tannin extract desulfurization technology has been researched in this article. The results show that the reaction between HS- and V(V) is a quick reaction process. When the initial concentration of V(V) increases, the reaction speed accelerates, and the equilibrium conversion of HS- rises. The effect of reaction temperature is smaller in the operation range of tannin extract desulfurization technology, and the reaction speed slows with the pH value enhancing. Additionally, a new reaction mechanism on the reaction between HS- and V(V) was proposed by analyzing the experimental phenomena and the solid product. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

To investigate the formation reason of by-products in tannin extract desulfurization, the kinetics of the chemical oxidation of aqueous HS- solutions have been studied in a continuous bubbling reactor. The results show that the reaction rate increased as the initial concentration of HS- increased, and the air velocity accelerated, and reaction temperature rose. The rate equation is -[image omitted] = 1.13 exp(-25622.71/RT)CHS-. By theoretical analysis and experimental research, it is discovered that the oxidation products of HS- are mainly S2O32- and not sulfur. Abstract

Blue gourami, Trichogaster trichopterus (Pallas), were intraperitoneally immunized with major adhesin, a 43 kDa OMP protein isolated from fish Aeromonas hydrophila, in the presence of Freund's complete adjuvant (FCA). Three weeks later, a booster injection of adhesin without FCA was administered. Control group fish were similarly treated with phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) and FCA. Results showed that anti-adhesin serum obtained from fish after booster immunization exhibited very strong ability in agglutinating bacterial cells. Although this antiserum had no bactericidal effect, it could significantly inhibit serologically different strains of A. hydrophila from invading EPC (Epithelioma papillosum of carp) cells in vitro. In addition, the proliferative response of head kidney leucocytes of these immune fish was significantly increased as compared to that of the control. The results also showed that the major adhesin could provide significant protective immunity to fish against the challenge by homologous and heterologous strains of A. hydrophila and one virulent strain of Vibrio anguillarum. Abstract

Infectious keratitis after penetrating keratoplasty can be devastating to the survival of the graft and its visual outcome. From November 1989 to October 1994, we treated 41 episodes of late microbial keratitis among 354 consecutive penetrating keratoplasty patients and reviewed their medical records retrospectively. The time interval between the corneal transplantation and the onset of graft infection was averaged 10.4 +/- 10.9 months (range: 1-52 months). The precipitating factors of keratitis included epithelial defect (49%), suture-related problems (41%), use of contact lenses (17%), trichiasis (17%), dry eye (12%), and lid abnormalities (10%). Gram-positive cocci and gram-negative bacilli were associated with 51 and 40%, respectively, of the infectious keratitis, with Streptococcus being the most common species. Despite fortified antibiotic treatments, major complications such as graft failure and wound dehiscence could result. The overall result was that clarity was retained in only 43% of our grafts. We conclude that to prevent infectious keratitis there is a need to implement appropriate preventive measures as well as close monitoring of the graft after operation.
