Abstract

The output of a laser wakefield accelerator depends strongly on the density profile of the gas target. In this work we focus on the reconstruction of 3D density profiles from tomographic measurements. We compare analytical and iterative methods, and we propose a new one, the filtered algebraic reconstruction method (FARM), which is tailored for the reconstruction of gas targets for laser wakefield acceleration. Several methods are tested on both simplified and realistic geometries. The algorithms are evaluated in terms of the quality of the density profile reconstruction, the number of projections needed and the computation time required.

Abstract

The maximum ion energy and acceleration efficiency have to be increased for practical applications of intense ion beams produced by intense short laser pulses incident on a thin foil. For this aim, we propose to use foil with a microscopic structure on the front size. We have prepared such targets by depositing a monolayer of polystyrene nanospheres of a size comparable to laser wavelength on a thin foil. The damage threshold of the produced targets is found experimentally above 3.5 × 109 W/cm2 for a nanosecond pedestal and above 1011 W/cm2 for femtosecond prepulses.

Abstract

A remarkable ion energy increase is demonstrated for post acceleration by a laser-plasma booster. An intense short-pulse laser generates a strong current by high-energy electrons accelerated, when this intense short-pulse laser illuminates a plasma target. The strong electric current creates a strong magnetic field along the high-energy electron current in plasma. During the increase phase in the magnetic field, a longitudinal inductive electric field is induced for the forward ion acceleration by the Faraday law. Our 2.5-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations demonstrate a remarkable increase in ion energy by several tens of MeV.

Abstract

A remarkable improvement is presented on the energy conversion efficiency from laser to protons in a laser-foil interaction by particle simulations. The total laser-proton energy conversion efficiency from laser to protons becomes 16.7%, though a conventional plane foil target serves a rather low efficiency. In our 2.5-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations the Al multihole structure is also employed, and the laser absorption ratio reaches 71.2%. The main physical reason for the enhancement of the conversion efficiency is a reduction of the laser reflection at the target surface area;

Abstract

Shock Ignition is considered as a relatively robust and efficient approach to inertial confinement fusion. A strong converging shock, which is used to ignite the fuel, is launched by a high power laser pulse with intensity in the range of 1015 − 1016 W/cm2 (at the wavelength of 351 nm). In the lower end of this intensity range the interaction is dominated by collisions while the parametric instabilities are playing a secondary role. This is manifested in a relatively weak reflectivity and efficient electron heating. The interaction is dominated by collective effects at the upper edge of the intensity range. The stimulated Brillouin and Raman scattering (SBS and SRS respectively) take place in a less dense plasma and cavitation provides an efficient collisionless absorption mechanism. The transition from collisional to collisionless absorption in laser plasma interactions at higher intensities is studied here with the help of large scale one-dimensional Particle-in-Cell (PIC) simulations. The relation between the collisional and collisionless processes is manifested in the energy spectrum of electrons transporting the absorbed laser energy and in the spectrum of the reflected laser light.

Abstract

This paper describes the results of a series of experiments conducted with the PALS laser at intensities of interest for the shock ignition approach to inertial fusion. In particular, we addressed the generation of hot electrons (HE) (determining their average energy and number), as well as the parametric instabilities which are producing them. In addition, we studied the impact of HE on the formation and dynamics of strong shocks.

Abstract

Proton acceleration from the interaction of high contrast, 25 fs laser pulses at >1019 W/cm2 intensity with plastic foils covered with a single layer of regularly packed micro-spheres has been investigated experimentally. The proton cut-off energy has been measured as a function of the micro-sphere size and laser incidence angle for different substrate thickness, and for both P and S polarization. The presence of micro-spheres with a size comparable to the laser wavelength allows to increase the proton cut-off energy for both polarizations at small angles of incidence (10°). For large angles of incidence, however, proton energy enhancement with respect to flat targets is absent. Analysis of electron trajectories in particle-in-cell simulations highlights the role of the surface geometry in the heating of electrons. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A study of ASP 30 steel surface modification with high intensity Ti:sapphire laser, operating at 804 nm wavelength and pulse duration of 60 fs, in vacuum ambient, is presented. ASP 30 steel surface variations were studied at laser intensities of 10(14) and 10(13) W/cm(2). The steel target specific surface changes and phenomena observed are: (i) Creation of craters at 10(14) W/cm(2) intensity; (ii) formation of periodic surface structures only at the reduced intensity of 10(13) W/cm(2); (iii) chemical surface changes registered only at higher laser intensity, and (iv) occurrence of plasma in front of the surface, including its emission in X-ray region. It can be concluded from this study that the reported laser intensities can effectively be applied for ASP 30 steel surface modification. Careful choosing of laser intensity and pulse count can lead to precise superficial material removal, for example laser intensity similar to 10(13) W/cm(2) and low pulse count can lead to ultra-precise surface processing. Generally, femtosecond laser surface modification of ASP 30 steel is non-contact and very rapid compared with traditional modification methods.

Abstract

Irradiation of refractory metals including tungsten (W) by high intensity laser radiation possesses fundamental as well as applied significance. Due to extraordinary characteristics, tungsten is nowadays an interesting metal which can be used in wide range of applications, from electronic to nuclear field. In the latter area, it is well known that tungsten can be used as plasma-facing material in fusion device/reactor [1] where high fluxes are present. Behavior/modification of tungsten surface under the action of high intensity laser radiation is scarce in literature and the goal of this research is focused in that direction. Tungsten modification in this study was done by pulsed, femtosecond laser [2,3] with the following parameters: output pulse energy up to 12 mJ; emission wavelength 800 nm; laser pulse duration 60 fs; repetition rate up to 10 Hz; fluence and intensity 16.2 J/cm2 and 2.7 1014 W/cm2 ,respectively (focusing regime), etc. Irradiation was carried out in vacuum, helium and air ambience. Generally, surface modification of the tungsten depends on the laser output parameters - pulse energy density (fluence), intensity, wavelength, laser pulse duration, number of accumulated laser pulses, etc., as well as the sample characteristics, for example absorptivity, and used environmental conditions (e.g. vacuum or gas (helium, air, etc.)). Surface changes and phenomena at W-target, in vacuum ambience, can be summarized as follows: (i) crater shaped damages with depth increasing with higher number of accumulated laser pulses; (ii) formation of solid droplets at near and further periphery; (iii) vast rim surrounding craters, and (iv) appearance of intensive plasma.

Abstract

Laser accelerated proton beams have been proposed to be used in different research fields. A great interest has risen for the potential replacement of conventional accelerating machines with laser-based accelerators, and in particular for the development of new concepts of more compact and cheaper hadrontherapy centers. In this context the ELIMED (ELI MEDical applications) research project has been launched by INFN-LNS and ASCR-FZU researchers within the pan-European ELI-Beamlines facility framework. The ELIMED project aims to demonstrate the potential clinical applicability of optically accelerated proton beams and to realize a laser-accelerated ion transport beamline for multi-disciplinary user applications. In this framework the eye melanoma, as for instance the uveal melanoma normally treated with 62 MeV proton beams produced by standard accelerators, will be considered as a model system to demonstrate the potential clinical use of laser-driven protons in hadrontherapy, especially because of the limited constraints in terms of proton energy and irradiation geometry for this particular tumour treatment. Several challenges, starting from laser-target interaction and beam transport development up to dosimetry and radiobiology, need to be overcome in order to reach the ELIMED final goals. A crucial role will be played by the final design and realization of a transport beamline capable to provide ion beams with proper characteristics in terms of energy spectrum and angular distribution which will allow performing dosimetric tests and biological cell irradiation. A first prototype of the transport beamline has been already designed and other transport elements are under construction in order to perform a first experimental test with the TARANIS laser system by the end of 2013. A wide international collaboration among specialists of different disciplines like Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Medicine and medical doctors coming from Europe, Japan, and the US is growing up around the ELIMED project with the aim to work on the conceptual design, technical and experimental realization of this core beamline of the ELI Beamlines facility. © (2013) COPYRIGHT Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE).
