The bachelor's thesis "The Death of Jan Masaryk" in the periodical press deals with how selected media reported on the person and death of Jan Masaryk in the period from February 25 to March 31, 1948. Specifically, these are the dailies Rudé právo and Svobodné noviny (known as Lidové noviny) . But first, he deals with the person and important events in the life of Jan Masaryk. Subsequently, it presents a brief history of both dailies. He then deals with the analysis of articles in both periodicals. The researched texts could be divided into two periods: first, before Masaryk's death and the second, the days after his death. In the first period, the dailies did not pay much attention to Jan Masaryk. They rarely wrote about him, mostly in connection with forming a new government, of which he became a member. In the second period, the number of texts mentioning his name grew significantly. The most common topic was Masaryk's funeral, first its organization, then its course and Masaryk's interview for the French daily L'ordre, from which both dailies quoted very often. At that time, it was a turning point in Czechoslovakia when non-communist ministers resigned, and Klement Gottwald began to form a government in which the Communists prevailed. At that time, the Communists also controlled print media...

The thesis deals with the well - known affair of the top ODA politician and the Minister of Justice Jan Kalvoda, who resigned from all his public positions in 1996 and left the top politics. Using the method of qualitative analysis, the work focuses on the resonance of this act in the articles of large domestic newspapers Právo and Lidové noviny and examines how the phenomenon, which until then had no parallel in Czech politics, was approached. Part of the work is a brief look at the development of the Civic Democratic Alliance, its top personalities and achievements during Kalvod's presidency, a medallion about Jan Kalvod, the main research evaluation of selected newspaper articles that began immediately after Kalvoda's resignation and culminated in the composition of his party as chairman in 1997. The whole work was written primarily on the basis of book sources dealing with ODA and subsequently through the study of major newspaper articles from the period 1996-97. Each chapter of the research part ends with the comparation and in the very conclusion there is a reflection on the whole case through the eyes of the author and its comparison with other political affairs.

The bachelor thesis The Dissolution of the Soviet Union and the year 1991 in the contemporary Czech press aims to describe how the Czech daily newspapers Rude pravo, Mlada fronta Dnes and Lidove noviny reported on the events of 1991 connected with the collapse of the Soviet Union. The subject of this diploma thesis is media image of the Czech first ladies in the period 1993-2020. The office of the first lady is not official in the Czech Republic, so each lady determines for herself what she will do during the term of office. Czech media monitor the activities of the first ladies and, on the basis of their activities, assign certain roles to them. According to this information, which is presented to the audience, the public forms an opinion about the wives of the presidents. The aim of this thesis is to describe a media image of all Czech first ladies in the years 1993-2020. To obtain their media images, articles from the daily newspapers, from Lidové noviny and Blesk were chosen. To achieve these results, a qualitative content analysis was chosen and complemented by a quantitative content analysis. Due to insufficient resources in the field of research of the first Czech ladies, foreign literature was used in the theoretical part. The final part of this thesis contains answers to research questions, a comparison of differences in coverage of the first ladies in two different types of media and the resulting media images of all Czech first ladies.

This thesis deals with how three chosen Czech daily newspapers - Rudé právo, Mladá fronta (later Mladá fronta DNES) and Lidové noviny - wrote about significant events that took place in the union republics during the last three years of the Soviet Union's existence (1989-1991). It specifically focuses on those events through which the republics were trying to regain freedom and independence for themselves - either through protests, or in a political matter. The thesis also addresses events that were somehow groundbreaking or during which ordinary people, who went to the streets to express their dissaproval of current political situation or to defend legally elected bodies, lost their lives. The thesis uses qualitative analysis to find out if there was a difference in how these three selected Czech newspapers wrote about such events in the context of changes that occured in the Czech political and media system, and if each own coverage somehow evolved.

The aim of this thesis is to analyze the influence of media ownership on media depiction of anti-government protests in 2019 organized by a civic organization Milion Chvilek (Million Moments for Democracy) in daily newspapers Lidové noviny and Hospodářské noviny through a comparative content analysis. Lidové noviny is a part of MAFRA media group owned by current Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš with his ownership share placed in a trust managed by his wife and other close associates. Daily newsprint and other publications in this media group found themselves in a situation where they had to report about protests focused on their de facto owner. A public debate centered around Andrej Babiš's possible conflict of interest has been ongoing since his entry into politics. Babiš's strong position in the media industry is one of the debate's focal points. According to his critics, this position could enable him to manipulate public mood which would provide him with an unfair advantage in the political arena. On a selected sample of articles about 2019 protests published in the above-mentioned newspapers, this media analysis strives to unveil to what extent the coverage, tone and space for commentaries from politicians and other public actors in Lidové noviny differ from Hospodářské noviny, which is deemed most...

This study compares reactions of two selected Czech daily - Lidove noviny in 1930 and Miada fronta in 2008to expansion of economic depression which forces employers to reduce cost of production and cost of labor force. The easiest way of reducing costs was cutting-down the number of employees. I tried to compare statistics considering the unemployment with media contents of economic news in selected newspapers. Study compares the influence of the rate of unemployment in various Czech and Moravian regions to their representation in selected medias and also compares the influence of the rate of unemployment in selected sectors of Czech economy to their representation in medias. Study also analyses subjects of business news which concerned the problem of unemployment. - Abstract
The interaction that took place in 1968 between Soviet and Czechoslovak leaders confirms another of Robert Jervis's suppositions, that ‘While a state's intentions may be obvious in retrospect, they are often obscure at the time. A look at the information available to decision-makers as they draw inferences about other states must make us less harsh on those whose judgements prove to be incorrect. Few actions are unambiguous. They rarely provide anything like proof of how the state plans to act in the future.’ Despite the extensive information available, Soviet leaders found it extremely difficult to gauge the real intentions of the Dubček coalition. If anything, their task became all the more onerous as time passed, more information was gathered, more encounters were arranged, and more promises were made. Even at the very start, the positive Soviet response to Dubček's election was accompanied by awkwardness and ambiguity over signals and indices. Three weeks before, Brezhnev had come to Prague at Novotný's request to help the latter fend off the alliance that had begun to form against him. Brezhnev, who seems to have had only a vague sense of what was happening, arrived on 8 December 1967, five days before the Central Committee was due to convene; this session was likely to resume the critical debate provoked by Dubček at its October meeting. This bachelor's thesis focuses on the development of media image of David Rath in two selected Czech journals (Lidové noviny and Právo). Its primary goal is to find out what were the consequences of Rath's corruption scandal. For this purpose, three distinctive time periods were considered in relation to the most current development of the affair. Today, the case has not yet been closed, which is the reason why the structure of this thesis differs from the former proposition as crucial changes took place in Rath's case over the last year. In theoretical part of the thesis, role of media in politics and society is explained. Further on, representation and media image are defined and basic theories that are applied during the creation of media image are presented. David Rath is also briefly introduced, as well as a summary of his corruption affair. Quantitative and qualitative methods of research are described in methodological part of the thesis and their selected combination is then defined for content analysis, for which Newton Media SEARCH was used as the source of information. Outcome of this work is an analytical section with a presentation of acquired results that also serve as answers to the posed hypotheses. Thanks to that we can compare the analyzed content of the two specified journals.

This thesis investigates the trend of reusing the content of printed media in their on-line counterparts, based on several selected Czech national newspapers (Mladá fronta DNES, Lidové noviny, Právo) and their corresponding news servers (idnes.cz, lidovky.cz, novinky.cz) over the course of one constructed week in 2015. The theoretical section examines the interrelatedness of printed and on-line media, the impact of digitization on the transformation of the journalistic profession, and its influence on the content and recipients of media communications. The fundamental questions posed by this research are as follows: What percentage of the printed content is reused in the newspaper's corresponding on-line version and vice versa, and which of the selected media reuse the most content? The research operates with three initial hypotheses regarding the quantity and frequency of content conversion: printed journals reuse their content in on-line news servers at a rate of up to 5%, news servers reuse their content in printed journals at a rate of up to 10%, and the practice of shovelware is most frequently employed by the periodicals Mladá fronta DNES and Právo. The aim of the research is to reveal and interpret shovelware trends in the selected media and evaluate how this practice is perceived. The...

The thesis deals with the journalistic works of Milena Jesenská not only in Lidové noviny but also in the magazine Přítomnost in 1929 - 1930, resp. in 1937 - 1939. In her works we can find a number of repetitive topics. Most of them have in large part roots in her life. Her literaty output is permanently penetrated by her permanent need to help her surroundings and to protect her weaker residents, which is according to author's biographers for Milena Jesenská sheer crucial. The author stood in the years 1929 - 1930 as the head of women's section of Lidové noviny and was trying very hardly to fight for the change of the form of this section in the print at that time. Another significant topic was the issue of a modern woman and her role in the society at that time. The thesis deals also with the resonance of social relations and historic events in the examined texts. Politically tuned reflections or reports and reportage by Milena Jesenská in the magazine Přítomnost bring an authentic perspective to the atmosphere in the Czechoslovak society at that time.

This bachelor thesis deals with media coverage of two allied air strikes against the Pilsen Region in the spring of 1943. The bombing was carried out by the British RAF on the night from 16 to 17 April 1943 and from 13 to 14 May with the objective to hit the Škoda Works in Pilsen, the most important arms factory in the Protectorate. The strikes were not successful from the Allies' perspective. In the April strike, Dobřany, which is 11 km away, was hit instead of the Pilsen factory complex when the pilots mistook the local mental asylum for the Pilsen Škoda Works. The May strike was more successful. The Škoda factory was hit but not in a way that would paralyse its production. In addition, it also hit civilian targets. The essay opens with an overview of the situation in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, the printed periodic media of that time and the system of censorship, followed by a brief introduction to Pilsen's history at the time of the Protectorate as well as a description of the actual air strikes by a current historian. In terms of the actual analysis, the essay focuses on a two-week period immediately following the bombing, i.e. from 17 April to 1 May and from 14 May to 1 June 1943. Exploration of the influences that an owner can have on his own media is an important topic nowadays. This master thesis focuses on the possible owner influences on his newspaper in the example of buying of the publishing house Mafra by Agrofert's owner Andrej Babis. It covers articles concerning Agrofert in two of Mafra's dailies - Mlada fronta Dnes and Lidove noviny. The reporting period covers two years before and two years after the purchase of Mafra by the owner of Agrofert and the current Czech Minister of Finance Andrej Babis. Western orientation of the interwar Czechoslovak foreign policy was based on a longterm effort to extricate the territory from a German sphere of influence and on the circumstances of its formation in 1918. A generally accepted narration about the friendship of France and Britain resulted in a deep mental shock after the messages about the signing of the Munich Agreement reached Czechoslovakia on the 30th of September 1938. Consequently, Czechoslovakia reoriented itself towards East. The aim of this diploma thesis is to capture this sudden turn through an analysis of the British image in selected Czech journals. Britain is in this regard examined as one of two most important interwar allies of Czechoslovakia. Discoursive analysis is applied to articles appearing in three periodicals, which represent three interwar ideological groups. Namely, the diploma thesis works with Lidove noviny, which were constructing an image influenced by the foreign policy orientation of the Castle, Venkov, which acted as a press agency of the most powerful political party, and Rude pravo, whose editorial line was comparatively noncomformist and thus represents a desirable alternative.

This master's thesis deals with the Great Strike in the city of Most and its depiction in two state and one regional periodicals, namely Rudé právo, Lidové noviny and Brüxer Zeitung. The Great Strike was a significant display of miners' discontent, which went beyond the region's borders and influenced everyday life in the whole country. The extent and consequences of this protest action were unique at that time. My objective was to find out what depiction there is in the then periodicals. The thesis contains a brief historical insight into economic crisis and media situation in Czechoslovakia at the end of the 20th century. In the fist section, there are described economic aspects which induced problems not only in mining but in the whole economy. The activities of trade unions in the First Czechoslovak republic are also included. The second section describes in detail the development of the Great Strike, including events preceeding it. The main goal of my thesis will be to find, how two significant dailies - Hospodářské noviny and Lidové noviny, reported about Václav Klaus's whole term. The thesis is based on the media theory like theory of gatekeeping or theory of agenda-setting and on the biography of Václav Klaus. There is a system of hypotheses that are asking questions which are needed for the study of stereotypes, for the following of the periodicity of titles with president's name on them, or for the meaning of the specific articles. For that I will be using Newton Media database. On the end of the thesis I should find out whether there is media bias towards Václav Klaus in his term. And I also hope that I would be able to evaluate objectivity of these studied dailies.

The thesis The media image of the Fair Trade concept in the Czech press examines media image of the Fair Trade business system in the most widely read newspapers Aha!, Blesk, Hospodářské noviny, Lidové noviny, Mladá fronta DNES, Právo and Sport. The aim is to find out whether newspapers report on Fair Trade in broader context and in which frames it is most likely presented. At the same time the thesis examines the extent to which newspapers inform about Fair Trade. There are two hypothesis formulated, one suggesting that the amount of articles referring about Fair trade has an increasing tendency and that articles do not address the issue in broader context. The answers to research questions and the validity of the hypotheses are examined through quantitative and qualitative content analysis based primarily on the framework theory. Deductive procedure using pre-formulated control questions is also used. The finding is that the newspapers most often present Fair Trade in economics frame followed by conflict frame and human impact frame. In addition, the thesis examines the presence of a critical frame, which is almost absent in the newspapers. The context is usually limited. The amount of articles about Fair Trade is decreasing during the monitored period of time. So the validity of the hypothesis...

This bachelor thesis examines the representation of the Czechoslovak February 1948 coup in Rudé právo and Svobodné noviny. Its aim is to find out the difference between the periodicals and the possible change of Svobodné noviny after the replacement of the editor-in-chief during the coup. Using Krippendorff's quantitative content analysis, I find out that before the editor- in-chief's exchange, the newspaper differed. While Svobodné noviny were objective, Rudé právo contained engaged journalism. After the exchange, the differences faded away. The plurality of opinions was no longer present in Svobodné noviny, and the opposition was displayed negatively, as was the case of Rudé právo.

During the first republic, Hubert Ripka (1895-1958) was one of the most active democratic orientated journalists and closest colleagues of minister of foreign affairs and later president Edvard Beneš. His political and journalist beginnings are connected with national democratic group Mladá generace. What was crucial for Ripka's career was the split between left and right wings of Mladá generace in 1920, when he - after the victory of the right wing - withdrew. Antonín Pešl brought him to the Národní osvobození, which was associated with Československá obec legionářská and politics of Hrad. In the area of foreign policy he focused above all on monitoring political and cultural life in Jugoslavia, he became a secretary of Československo-jihoslovanská liga, member of Slovanský ústav, he contributed to the Jugoslavian periodicals and to the renovated Slovanský přehled. Ripka's most important lecture activity was associated with prestigious Klub Přítomnost. He worked in Lidové noviny since 1930, yet he still contributed to a lot of other periodicals. With growing threat of Pangermanism he concentrated on all kinds of support of Little Entente. He made informative foreign trips since 1932, from which he brought summary reports to E. Beneš. The Ph.D. thesis deals with the Czech author František Gellner. It deliberately endeavours not to exclude any of the segments of his both literary and visual work out of consideration, but to present them all in their heterogeneity, yet in mutual connections. Works of Gellner's art are therefore interpreted in novel ways, especially in consideration of the contexts of the period from which they origin (and above others those contexts that have become obscure and forgotten in the nearly hundred years since the original publication of Gellner's work). The first chapter summarizes the previous critical reception of Gellner's work and at the same time deals with this author's image in the Czech cultural milieu. Analysing some of Gellner's manuscripts, the second chapter aims to describe the specific type of the author's creativity. The third chapter is devoted to the problem of ambiguously constructed national identity of František Gellner and to the impact it had on the ways he dealt with the themes of Jewishness and anti-Semitism. The fourth chapter describes the various relations between Gellner's works and the periodicals these were prepared for. The next chapter is dedicated solely to Lidové noviny, as this was the newspaper periodical with which Gellner co-operated most intensely; the detailed...

This diploma thesis on Representation of the problem of climate change in the print media is a content analysis of Czech quality daily newspapers, namely Hospodářské noviny, Lidové noviny, Mladá fronta DNES and Právo. It deals with the way the selected daily newspapers presented debate on global climate change in 2013-2014. The theoretical part informs readers about the basic concepts and definitions and introduces them to the problem. The empirical part answers the question of whether the media coverage of global climate change in Czech quality daily newspapers is consistent with scientific findings of the international climate discourse represented by Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) or whether it relies equally on opinions of the small group of so called climate skeptics who question the general consensus of the scientific comunity regarding the causes and consequences of climate change or the need of adequate measures. The results of research indicated that most of analyzed articles informed about climate change the same way as the main climatological research. The largest number of skeptical articles appeared in Lidové noviny. A considerable number of articles didn't comment on the causes of climate change, their seriousness or decisions regarding action.
