Abstract Objective To understand the facial emotion recognition of male veterans with chronic schizophrenia and the relationship between facial emotion recognition and interpersonal communication to provide a reference for designing social skills training programmes. Method Fifty-six eligible male patients with chronic schizophrenia who were admitted to our hospital from October 2020 to April 2021 were selected, and 24 healthy people were selected as controls. Facial emotion recognition, social communication skills and self-perceived interpersonal disturbance were assessed using a facial emotion recognition stimulus manual, the Social Skills Checklist (SSC) and the Interpersonal Relationship Integrative Diagnostic Scale (IRIDS). Disease status was assessed using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale. Results Both the control group and the patient group had the highest recognition accuracy for neutral faces. The recognition rate for neutral expression was higher in the control group than in the patient group (p = 0.008). The rate of neutral expressions identified as happiness was higher in the patient group than in the control group (p = 0.001). The identification of anger as happiness was higher in the control group than in the patient group (p = 0.026), and the pattern of misidentification was similar between the control group and the patient group. The accuracy of facial emotion recognition was negatively associated with the age of onset (p 0.05). Abstract In the present report, we describe a case of sclerosing orbital pseudotumor in an 11‐year‐old castrated male American Shorthair cat. Ophthalmic exam showed lagophthalmos, retracted right upper eyelid, and resistant to retropulsion in his right eye. Under magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans, increased volume of the extraocular muscles (EOMs) of the right eye was prominent. Immunosuppressive dosage of prednisolone partially ameliorated the clinical signs, but some clinical signs were still gradually progressive or persistent. In the second MRI scan, decreased diameter of the thickened right extraocular muscles was found. After the third MRI scan, enucleation of the right eye was performed due to substantial adverse effects of systemic steroid therapy. Histopathological examination revealed no evidence of neoplastic transformation nor infection. Feline restrictive orbital myofibroblastic sarcoma (FROMS) was therefore excluded, suggesting unknown causes of extensive fibrotic changes in the right orbit of the affected cat.

Abstract Background Canine keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) is predominantly an immune-mediated disease. Current therapy of canine KCS is mainly by immunosuppressant, but the effectiveness was limited in some patients. In the past few years, some studies showed the results of the use of mesenchymal stem cells in treating canine KCS via periocular injections. However, the periocular injection procedure requires sedation or general anesthesia, and may lead to iatrogenic or incidental injury during the injection process. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of topical allogenic canine adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (cAD-MSCs) in clinical patients of canine KCS. Results The cAD-MSCs used in this study were characterized for their capability of tri-lineage differentiation and immunomodulatory properties. In addition, preparation methods for eye drops of cAD-MSCs was developed and its optimal preservation was tested. The canine KCS patients were recruited for clinical trial and divided into two groups based on their history of previous treatment. All patients received topical cAD-MSCs treatment once per week for 6 consecutive weeks and complete ophthalmic examinations were performed 1 week before treatment (week 0) and at 3rd, 6th, 9th weeks, respectively. The results showed that the quantity and quality of tears have improved significantly following topical cAD-MSCs treatment based on Schirmers tear test-1 and tear break-up time. More than half of all patients were found improved in the tear quantity. In particular, 56.5% of the patients that were unresponsive to prior immunosuppressant therapy had an effective increase in tear volume. The severity of clinical signs was also ameliorated according to the numeric rating scale score from both patient owners and the clinician. Conclusion To sum up, topical cAD-MSCs may be beneficial especially in KCS patients with poor owner compliance for frequent daily use of eye drops or those who are unresponsive to immunosuppressant therapy.

Objective: To evaluate 2-year follow-up swallowing function in patients with human papillomavirus-related oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (HPV+ OPSCC) who completed neoadjuvant chemotherapy and transoral robotic surgery (NAC+S).Study Design: Retrospective analysis of patients with OPSCC treated with NAC+S between 2010 and 2021.Setting: A single academic institution.Methods: This is a cross-sectional study of patient-reported swallowing function, assessed with the MD Anderson Dysphagia Inventory (MDADI) at least 2 years after completion of treatment. The inclusion criteria are patients with HPV+ OPSCC who underwent NAC+S at least 2 years ago. Those requiring adjuvant radiation or chemoradiation or experiencing relapse were excluded from the study.Results: Completed MDADIs were received from 37 patients at a median 3.8 years posttreatment (interquartile range, 2.0-8.6 years). Of those, 94.6% (n = 35) were male and 81.1% (n = 30) were White. The median age at OPSCC diagnosis was 59.0 years (interquartile range, 41-80 years). The most frequent primary subsite of OPSCC was the base of the tongue (n = 20, 54.1%), followed by the tonsils (n = 16, 43.2%). In addition, 75.7% (n = 28) had stage IVa disease (TNM seventh edition), and 29 (78.4%) had scores ≥80, classified as optimal function. When compared with patients who received bilateral neck dissection, patients who received unilateral neck dissection were associated with an age <65 years old (P = .036) and lower clinical TNM stage (P = .04), as well as higher composite, emotional, functional, and physical MDADI scores (P = .017, .046, .013, and .05, respectively).Conclusion: Patients with OPSCC who were treated with NAC+S achieved satisfactory long-term swallowing outcomes. Objectives: Recent literature suggests that outpatient head and neck surgery is safe and may decrease costs. This study assesses whether outpatient parotidectomy differs in complication type and rate from inpatient surgery. Methods: Patients who underwent parotidectomy at our institution from 2011 to 2019 were retrospectively reviewed and divided by inpatient or outpatient status. Complications including infection, seroma, salivary fistula, hematoma, and flap necrosis, as well as readmission rates were tabulated. Drain placement, related to tumor size, was also analyzed using a receiver operating curve. Results: 144 patients had available data for analysis. Nine of the 144 patients had complications. Seven of 98 outpatients and two of 46 inpatients had complications. There was no statistically significant difference in complication rate between the two groups (P =.518). Tumor size ≥4.62 cm3 was associated with drain placement (P =.044). Conclusion: Outpatient parotidectomy is a safe and viable alternative for carefully selected patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives/hypothesis: To determine the effect of preoperative parathyroid hormone (PTH) level on the extent of surgery and the accuracy of parathyroid imaging in primary hyperparathyroidism.Study Design: Retrospective cohort.Methods: Final diagnosis of single-gland adenoma and its location versus multigland disease was established in this retrospective cohort study. Positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and accuracy of imaging were analyzed in relation to preoperative PTH levels.Results: Eighty-seven percent of the 218 patients enrolled in the study underwent unilateral targeted operation and had a 97.9% (95% confidence interval: 95.8%-100%) success rate. However, in patients with PTH <65 pg/mL, 28.6% had bilateral exploration compared to 10.3% in those with PTH ≥65 pg/mL (P = .042). In patients with PTH <65 pg/mL, 7/21 (33.3%) had inaccurate sestamibi findings compared to 24/174 (13.8%) in patients with PTH ≥65 pg/mL (P = .047).Conclusions: Accuracy of sestamibi drops significantly, by threefold, in patients with mild primary hyperparathyroidism and PTH <65 pg/mL. Patients with PTH < 65 pg/mL have a 2.5-fold higher rate of bilateral operation to identify the hypersecreting gland(s) compared to patients with PTH ≥65 pg/mL.Level Of Evidence: 4. Objective: To determine the regulatory effects and associated mechanisms of miR-130a on cisplatin resistance in ovarian cancer A2780 cell lines (including cisplatin sensitive A2780s and its resistant A2780/DDP cells)., Methods: A2780s and A2780/DDP cells were divided into four groups, and treated with lipo2000 (Lip), miR-negative (miR-NC) control, miR-130a-mimics (miR-130a-M increasing the expression of miR-130a and the agent), and miR-130a-inhibitor (miR-130a-I downregulating miR-130a expression), respectively. The proliferation of cells and their sensitivity to cisplatin were detected by MTT assay. RT-PCR and western blot were performed to examine the levels of MDR1, PTEN mRNA and proteins., Results: The expressions of MDR1 mRNA and P-gp in the A2780/DDP cells were significantly higher than those in the A2780s cells. However, no differences in the expressions of PTEN mRNA and proteins were detected between the two cell lines. Over-expressions of miR-130a had no effect on cell proliferation, but increased the resistance of the cells to cisplatin and up-regulated the expressions of MDR1 mRNA and P-gp in both cell lines. Down-regulated miR-130a did not affect cell proliferations, but enhanced the sensitivity of the cells to cisplatin, inhibited the expressions of MDR1 mRNA and P-gp and increased the expression of PTEN proteins., Conclusion: MiR-130a expression may be associated with cisplatin resistance of ovarian cancer cells. MiR-130a inhibitor can reverse the cisplatin resistance by upregulating the expression of PTEN proteins and down-regulating P-gp in A2780 cell lines. MiR-130 may become a new potential target of genetic therapy for cisplatin-resistant ovarian cancers.

Background and Objective: Induction chemotherapy and radiotherapy or concurrent chemoradiotherapy are the most two effective treatments for patients with locoregionally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). This study was to compare the efficacy of induction-concurrent chemoradiotherapy versus induction chemotherapy and radiotherapy for patients with locoregionally advanced NPC., Methods: From August 2002 to April 2005, 408 patients were randomly divided into the induction-concurrent chemoradiotherapy (IC/CCRT) group and the induction chemotherapy and radiotherapy (IC/RT) group. Patients in both groups received the same induction chemotherapy, including two cycles of floxuridine (FuDR) plus carboplatin (FuDR750 mg/m2, d1-5; carboplatin AUC=6). All the patients underwent radiotherapy one week after completing the induction chemotherapy. The patients in the IC/CCRT group also received carboplatin (AUC=6) on day 7, 28, and 49 during radiotherapy. Eight patients did not meet the inclusion criteria and were excluded. The remaining 400 cases were analyzed., Results: Grade III/IV toxicity was found in 28.4% of the patients in the IC/CCRT group and 13.1% in the IC/RT group (P < 0.001). After a median follow up time of 3.9 years, the three-year overall survival was 75.9% and 83.4% (P = 0.12) in the IC/CCRT and IC/RT groups, respectively. No significant differences in the failure-free survival rate, the locoregional control rate, and the distant control rate were found between the two groups., Conclusion: The IC/CCRT program does not improve the overall survival rate in patients with locoregionally advanced NPC compared with the IC/RT program.

Background and Objective: As signaling molecule and key component of Wnt/beta-catenin signaling pathway respectively, Wnt-1 and beta-catenin are abnormally expressed in several malignancies and correlate with poor prognosis. This study was to investigate the expression and clinical significance of Wnt-1 and beta-catenin in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC)., Methods: The expression of Wnt-1 and beta-catenin in 111 specimens of NPC was detected by SP immunohistochemistry. Their correlations to relapse-free survival (RFS), metastasis-free survival (MFS) and progression-free survival (PFS) were analyzed., Results: The high expression of beta-catenin was observed in 64 (57.7%) of the 111 cases. Its high expression rate was significantly higher in advanced NPC than in early stage NPC (63.1% vs. 40.7%, p = 0.041). The RFS, MFS and PFS were lower in high beta-catenin expression group than in low beta-catenin expression group (p < 0.05). Cox regression analysis demonstrated that beta-catenin was related to poor prognosis of NPC patients. The high expression of Wnt-1 was observed in 68 (61.3%) of the 111 cases, but its expression had no effect on RFS, MFS and PFS (p > 0.05)., Conclusions: Wnt/beta-catenin signaling pathway may be activated abnormally in some NPC patients. beta-catenin may be a prognostic factor of NPC.

Background & Objective: Radiation usually results in paranasal sinusitis in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients, which influences patients' quality of life. This study was to explore the occurrence and influencing factors of paranasal sinusitis in NPC patients before and after radiotherapy., Methods: Clinical data of 381 NPC patients, treated in Cancer Center of Sun Yat-sen University from Jan. 1998 to Jul. 2000, were reviewed. CT images before and after radiotherapy were compared. The occurrence and influencing factors of paranasal sinusitis were analyzed., Results: Of the 381 NPC patients, 176 (46.2%) suffered from paranasal sinusitis before radiotherapy. Among the 205 NPC patients without paranasal sinusitis before radiotherapy, 103 (50.2%) developed paranasal sinusitis after radiotherapy; the occurrence rates of paranasal sinusitis at 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, and 1 year after radiotherapy were 21.0%, 33.7%, 41.5% and 29.3%, respectively (Chi(2)=20.92, P<0.001). Logistic analysis showed that T stage was related to the occurrence rate of paranasal sinusitis., Conclusion: The incidence of paranasal sinusitis in NPC patients after radiotherapy is high and related to T stage.

Background & Objective: Although there are many multi-center, large sample sized, randomized prospective or retrospective studies, most aged nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients were excluded from these studies. This study was to explore clinical characteristics and prognoses of aged NPC patients., Methods: Clinical data of 313 NPC patients older than 60 years, hospitalized in the Department of Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma of Cancer Center of Sun Yat-sen University from Jan. 1, 1998 to Dec. 31, 2001, were analyzed. Of the 313 patients, 265 were men and 48 were women; 295 patients received radiotherapy, 91 of which received chemotherapy; 18 patients received chemotherapy alone or no treatment. The survival rate was calculated by Kaplan-Meier method, and compared by log-rank test. Prognosis was analyzed by Cox regression model., Results: The 1-, 3-, and 5-year overall survival (OS) rates and cancer-specific survival (CSS) rates of the 295 aged NPC patients underwent radiotherapy were 77.0%, 58.0%, 48.0% and 78.0%, 60.0%, 53.0%, respectively. Clinical stage, T stage, N stage, involvement of the skull base, cranial nerve invasion, radiation dose on the nasopharynx, radiotherapeutic field and interval time were significant prognostic factors of survival(P<0.05), whereas only clinical stage was independent prognostic factor(P<0.01). Chemotherapy did not influent the prognosis of aged NPC patients (P=0.42)., Conclusions: Radiotherapy is an effective way to cure aged NPC patients, while chemotherapy can not improve the efficacy. '92 Fuzhou staging can predict prognosis of aged NPC patients properly. Elderly NPC patients have worse survival rates than non-aged ones.

Background & Objective: The early diagnosis of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is the key factor that affecting the treatment result. We performed surface-enhanced desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (SELDI-TOF-MS) using a multi-layer artificial neural network (ANN) to develop and evaluate a proteomic diagnosis approach for HNSCC., Methods: Serum samples from 74 HNSCC patients and 146 healthy individuals were randomized into training set (148 samples) and test set (72 samples). At first, we detected the training set of samples using SELDI mass spectrometry and WCX2 (weak cation-exchange) chips. Using a multi-layer ANN with a back propagation algorithm, we identified a proteomic pattern that could discriminate cancer from control samples in the training set. The discovered pattern was then used to determine the accuracy of the classification system in the test set., Results: Four top-scored peaks, at m/z (mass/charge) ratio of 4 469 u, 5 924 u, 8 926 u, and 16 697 u, were finally selected as the potential biomarkers for detection of HNSCC with both sensitivity and specificity of 100.0% in the training set. The classifier predicted the HNSCC with sensitivity of 85.7%(18/21) and specificity of 96.1%(49/51) in the test set., Conclusion: SELDI profiling is a useful tool to accurately identify patients with HNSCC.

Background & Objective: Some patients with local persistent or recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) could achieve long-term survival after re-irradiation, but the irradiation-related complications are severe. Salvage surgical operation has similar, even better, curative effect, with no irradiation injury, but conventional surgical approaches may lead to serious damage, and unclear view of operation field is the obstacle for en bloc excision of the tumor. This study was to explore a new salvage surgical operation via mini-invasive endoscopic transnasal approach for recurrent NPC., Methods: Endoscopic nasopharyngectomy via mini-invasive endoscopic transnasal approach was performed in 25 patients with local persistent or recurrent NPC after radiotherapy between Sep. 2004 and Jan. 2007 in Cancer Center of Sun Yat-sen University. Local control conditions and complications were assessed., Results: All patients received successful radical resection via endoscopic transnasal approach; only 1 had positive surgical margin. No one received postoperative radiotherapy. During follow-up of 3-31 months (median, 13 months), 1 patient had local persistence, 3 had local recurrence, but none had distant metastasis or death. The 1-year overall survival rate was 100%; the 1-year recurrence-free survival rate was 86.0%. No trismus, dysphagia, dysphonia, other surgical complications, and perioperative death occurred., Conclusions: Salvage surgical operation via endoscopic transnasal approach can expose the whole nasopharynx and the shallow parapharynx for an oncologic resection of local persistent or recurrent NPC. The complications are few and mild; the short-term results are satisfactory.

Background & Objective: Few large-scale epidemiologic investigations of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) at high incidence region in Guangdong province were reported in recent 20 years. This study was to summarize clinical data of a population of hospitalized Cantonese NPC patients,analyze the epidemiologic characteristics of NPC in the high incidence region, and provide references for the prevention and treatment of NPC., Methods: Clinical data of 1 142 Cantonese NPC patients, hospitalized in Cancer Center of Sun Yat-sen University between Jan. 1998 and Aug. 2000, were collected according to well-designed forms and statistically analyzed., Results: The morbidity of NPC in Cantonese showed obvious family clustering: 21.9% of the patients had family history of cancer, and 12.3% had family history of NPC. Moreover, the family clustering feature was more obvious in the population from the region with higher incidence of NPC. The positive rate of VCA/IgA antibody was 90.0%, and that of EA/IgA antibody was 74.5%; the titers were positively related to tumor burden. Early diagnostic rate of NPC was about 30%., Conclusions: NPC patients in Cantonese population have obvious family and territorial clustering. High positive rates of VCA/IgA and EA/IgA antibodies are helpful for early diagnosis of NPC.
