Abstract

In this work, we investigate the reaction of γγ→DD¯, taking into account the S-wave DD¯ final state interaction. By fitting to the DD¯ invariant mass distributions measured by the Belle and BABAR Collaborations, we obtain a good reproduction of the data by means of a DD¯ amplitude that produces a bound DD¯ state with isospin I=0 close to threshold. The error bands of the fits indicate, however, that more precise data on this reaction are needed to be more assertive about the position and width of such a state.

Abstract

A shifted and broadened absorption spectrum from the tunneling of electrons was obtained by observing the tunneling of photoexcited electrons under the influence of electric field in the quantum well. The broadening of the absorption spectrum leads to a decrease in absorption coefficient when the applied electric field is increased. These results give an insight on spectrum broadening and the optimization guideline for detector design.

Abstract

A [Tb.sub.3][(Fe,V).sub.29] single crystal has been grown using the Czochralski method. Magnetization measurements along the hard axis of the crystal are presented. At low temperatures, a first-order magnetization process of type II occurs at large critical fields ([[Mu].sub.o][H.sub.c] = 10.6T at T = 5K). The data were analysed using the first-principle model in terms of exchange and crystal-field interactions. The second order crystal-field coefficients of two rare earth sites are estimated to be [A.sub.20] = 36K.[[a.sub.o].sup.-2] for the 41 site, and [A.sub.20] = +16K.[[a.sub.o].sup.-2] for the 2a site.

Abstract

A transfer-matrix method helps accurately examine the modulation from quantum-well embedded wave guides and optimize the efficiency of waveguide modulators. This method determines the bias-controlled phase modulation of waveguides with an arbitrary refractive index distribution. Both free-carrier effects and nonlinear effects of bulk material and quantum wells are responsible for changes in the refractive index. The quantum-well linear electro-optic effect helps increase the efficiency of phase modulators.

31. Particle collision during the tribo-electrostatic beneficiation of fly ash based on infrared thermography

Abstract

Tribo-electrostatic beneficiation is effective for separating unburned carbon from fly ash. During the process, the fly ash particles become charged owing to friction and collision inside a tribo device. The intensity of friction and collision between particles can be deduced from the tribo device temperature field, obtained by infrared thermography. The purpose of this research was to establish whether an appropriate configuration of tribo device models can be obtained from particle collision experiments using infrared thermography. An experimental set-up was configured to study tribo devices with different arrangements and spacing of the friction rods, and the effect that this has on interparticle collision and the tribo-electrostatic beneficiation process. The experimental material was fly ash particles with a size range from 38 µm to 74 µm and loss on ignition (LOI) 12.65%. The operating conditions were electric field voltage 40 kV and the air flux ranged from 12 to 24 m³/h. The results show that the temperature inside the tribo devices is directly proportional to air flux and particle collision rate. The arrangement and spacing of the friction rods has an important effect on the temperature field distribution. An equilateral triangular arrangement with 20 mm spacing significantly increases the temperature value and collision probability. The optimum operating parameters were established through tribo-electrostatic beneficiation experiments on the fly ash, and the results (LOI of the product at the two electrodes and rate of removal of unburned carbon at the negative plate) were consistent with those of the infrared thermography experiments. A tribo device with friction rods configured in an equilateral triangle arrangement and with 20 mm spacing again yielded the best results. This approach constitutes a new technique for the optimization of tribo device design.

39. Effects of mushroom and herb polysaccharides, as alternative for an antibiotic, on the cecal microbial ecosystem in broiler chickens

Abstract

An in vivo experiment was conducted to study the potential prebiotic effects of mushroom and herb polysaccharide extracts, Lentinus edodes extract (LenE), Tremella fuciformis extract, and Astragalus membranaceus Radix extract, on chicken growth and the cecal microbial ecosystem, as compared with the antibiotic Apramycin (APR). This investigation was carried out in terms of a dose-response study. The chickens were naturally infected with avian Mycoplasma gallisepticum prior to the experiment. The BW gain, cecal pH, viscosity, and predominant microbial populations were measured I wk after the extract and APR treatments. The extracts and APR significantly stimulated growth of the chickens infected with avian Mycoplasma gallisepticum. The average BW gain of the groups fed with the extracts was significantly lower than that of the antibiotic group. The extracts had no significant effect on cecal pH. However, cecal viscosity and microbial populations were significantly affected by feeding extracts and antibiotic. In contrast to APR, the extracts stimulated the number of the potentially beneficial bacteria (bifidobacteria and lactobacilli), while reducing the number of the potentially harmful bacteria (Bacteroides spp. and Escherichia coli). Of the 3 extracts, LenE was associated with the most cecal bifidobacteria and lactobacilli. With each increase in the LenE dose, birds tended to have higher BW gain and total aerobe and anaerobe counts. Numbers of predominant cecal bacteria, in particular, E. coli, bifidobacteria, and lactobacilli, were significantly increased with increases in the LenE dose. It would seem that these specific mushroom and herb polysaccharide extracts hold some promise as potential modifiers of intestinal microbiota in diseased chickens.
