We refine our previous calculation of multipole amplitude $E_{0+}$ for pion photo-production process, $\gamma N\rightarrow\pi N$. The treatment of final state interactions is based upon an earlier analysis of pion-nucleon scattering within Hamiltonian effective field theory, supplemented by incorporating contributions from the $N^*(1650)$ and the $K\Lambda$ coupled channel. The contribution from the bare state corresponding to the $N^*(1650)$ significantly enhances our results. Additionally, we also compute the multipole amplitude $M_{1-}$, which is of direct relevance to the Roper resonance. The results are comparable with other dynamical coupled channel models, even though the contribution from the bare state (interpreted as a 2s excitation) in this channel is small because of its large mass., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables

The geometry of centre vortices is studied in $\mathrm{SU(3)}$ gauge theory at finite temperature to capture the key structural changes that occur through the deconfinement phase transition. Visualisations of the vortex structure in temporal and spatial slices of the lattice reveal a preference for the vortex sheet to align with the temporal dimension above the critical temperature. This is quantified through a correlation measure. A collection of vortex statistics, including vortex and branching point densities, and vortex path lengths between branching points, are analysed to highlight internal shifts in vortex behaviour arising from the loss of confinement. We find the zero-temperature inclination of branching points to cluster at short distances vanishes at high temperatures, embodying a rearrangement of branching points within the vortex structure. The parity-expanded variational analysis (PEVA) technique enables the isolation of opposite-parity eigenstates at finite momentum. The approach has been used to perform the first lattice QCD calculations of excited-baryon form factors. In particular, these calculations show that the low-lying odd-parity nucleon excitations are described well by constituent quark models at moderate u and d quark masses approaching the strange quark mass. Herein, we extend the PEVA technique to establish a formalism for the determination of odd-parity nucleon electromagnetic transition form factors in lattice QCD. The formalism is implemented in the first calculation of the helicity amplitudes for transitions from the ground state nucleon to the first two odd-parity excitations. Through a comparison with constituent quark model calculations of these amplitudes, these new results give important insight into the structure of these excitations. This presentation opens with a brief review of lattice QCD calculations showing the $2s$ radial excitation of the nucleon sits at approximately 2 GeV, well above the Roper resonance position. We then proceed to reconcile this observation with experimental scattering data. While the idea of dressing quark-model states in a coupled-channel analysis to describe scattering data has been around for decades, it's now possible to bring these descriptions to the finite-volume of lattice QCD for confrontation with lattice-QCD calculations. This combination of lattice QCD and experiment demands that we reconsider our preconceived notions about the quark-model and its excitation spectrum. The continued development of models that propose the existence of fractional topological objects in the Yang-Mills vacuum has called for a quantitative method to study the topological structure of $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ gauge theory. We present an original numerical algorithm that can identify distinct topological objects in the nontrivial ground-state fields and approximate the net charge contained within them. This analysis is performed for $\mathrm{SU(3)}$ colour at a range of temperatures crossing the deconfinement phase transition, allowing for an assessment of how the topological structure evolves with temperature. We find a promising consistency with the instanton-dyon model for the structure of the QCD vacuum at finite temperature. We examine the internal structure of the $\Lambda(1670)$ through an analysis of lattice QCD simulations and experimental data within Hamiltonian effective field theory. Two scenarios are presented. The first describes the $\Lambda(1670)$ as a bare three-quark basis state, which mixes with the $\pi\Sigma$, $\bar{K}N$, $\eta\Lambda$ and $K\Xi$ meson-baryon channels. In the second scenario, the $\Lambda(1670)$ is dynamically generated from these isospin-0 coupled channels. The $K^-p$ scattering data and the pole structures of the $\Lambda(1405)$ and the $\Lambda(1670)$ can be simultaneously described well in both scenarios. However, a comparison of the finite-volume spectra to lattice QCD calculations reveals significant differences between these scenarios, with a clear preference for the first case. Thus the lattice QCD results play a crucial role in allowing us to distinguish between these two scenarios for the internal structure of the $\Lambda(1670)$., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, 1 table; accepted by Phys. We collect spectra extracted in the $I=\ell=1$ $\pi\pi$ sector provided by various lattice QCD collaborations and study the $m_\pi$ dependence of $\rho$-meson properties using Hamiltonian Effective Field Theory (HEFT). In this unified analysis, the coupling constant and cutoff mass, characterizing the $\rho - \pi \pi$ vertex, are both found to be weakly dependent on $m_\pi$, while the mass of the bare $\rho$, associated with a simple quark-model state, shows a linear dependence on $m_\pi^2$. Both the lattice results and experimental data can be described well. Drawing on HEFT's ability to describe the pion mass dependence of resonances in a single formalism, we map the dependence of the phase shift as a function of $m_\pi$, and expose interesting discrepancies in contemporary lattice QCD results., Comment: 24 pages, 16 figures

Schemes for describing the light quark mass dependence of the nucleon mass calculated in lattice QCD are compared. The three schemes in consideration include a fully relativistic and Lorentz covariant scheme, one that is fully relativistic but not Lorentz covariant, and a semirelativistic scheme utilizing the heavy baryon approximation. Calculations of observables involving pseudoscalar meson loop diagrams generate nonanalytic terms proportional to square roots and logarithms of the quark mass. The three schemes all yield the correct model independent leading and next-to-leading nonanalytic terms of the chiral expansion of the baryon mass. Results for the masses of the other members of the octet are also presented. Here, low-energy coefficients of the analytic terms of the expansion for the nucleon and hyperons are constrained by lattice QCD results and are demonstrated to be independent of the renormalization scheme used. The differences in the leading coefficient of the chiral expansions are found to be consistent with strange quark counting. Using the schemes examined herein, we report results for the pion-nucleon sigma commutator based upon recent lattice results from the CLS Collaboration. We find $\sigma_{\pi N}=51.7 \pm 3.2 \pm 1.4$ MeV where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic respectively., Comment: 23 pages, 6 figures

Recent lattice QCD results for the low-lying odd-parity excitations of the nucleon near the $N^{*}(1535)$ and $N^{*}(1650)$ resonance positions have revealed that the lattice QCD states have magnetic moments consistent with predictions from a constituent-quark-model. Using Hamiltonian Effective Field Theory (HEFT) to describe pion-nucleon scattering in the $I(J^{P}) = \frac{1}{2}(\frac{1}{2}^{-})$ channel, we represent these two quark-model like states as two single-particle bare basis states, dressed and mixed by meson-baryon scattering channels. By constraining the free parameters of the Hamiltonian with $S_{11}$ pion-nucleon scattering data, we perform the first calculation of the finite-volume spectrum using two bare-baryon basis states. By comparing this spectrum to contemporary lattice QCD results at three lattice volumes, we analyse the eigenvectors of the Hamiltonian to gain insight into the structure and composition of these two low-lying resonances. We find that an interpretation of the two low-lying nucleon resonances as quark-model like states dressed by meson-baryon interactions is consistent with both the $S_{11}$ scattering data and lattice QCD. We introduce a novel HEFT formalism for estimating scattering-state contaminations in lattice QCD correlation functions constructed with standard three-quark operators. Low-lying baryon resonances have been explored using Hamiltonian Effective Field Theory (HEFT), in a formalism where resonances with a three-quark component are described by both two-particle meson-baryon states and a bare basis state. Here, we investigate the use of multiple bare states in the Hamiltonian, to extend the formalism to higher energy ranges, and represent a larger portion of the low-lying baryon spectrum. Introducing a second bare state into a toy model extension of the low-energy $\Delta(1232)$ system, we explore the influence of the second bare state on the position of poles in the infinite-volume $T$-matrix. Considering the same system in a finite-volume, we analyse the finite-volume energy spectrum in the presence of a second bare state, providing insight into the interplay between two bare basis states, representing quark-model states, and the relationship between infinite-volume poles and finite-volume eigenstates., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures

The first calculation of the response of the momentum space quark propagator to center vortices in the ground state fields of QCD is presented. Center vortices are identified on 2+1-flavour dynamical gauge fields with $m_\pi \simeq 156$ MeV to obtain the vortex-removed and vortex-only quark propagator. Dynamical mass generation is found to vanish upon vortex removal, while the vortex-only field is able to generate dynamical mass. These new signatures significantly strengthen evidence that center vortices underpin both dynamical chiral symmetry breaking and quark confinement., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

An analysis of the geometry and structure of centre vortices in the presence of dynamical fermions is performed. A variety of metrics are used to measure the matrix structure of the vortex-modified gauge fields. Visualisations of centre vortices are presented and percolating clusters are identified. The size of secondary vortex clusters is analysed, with substantial differences observed between the pure Yang-Mills and dynamical fermion case. Vortex fields are represented as directed graphs, with branching points acting as the vertices. This representation leads to a novel picture of vortex branching as a binomial process. Quark confinement and dynamical chiral symmetry breaking are two of the most important emergent properties of the theory of quantum chromodynamics. We review recent results studying centre vortices in SU(3) lattice gauge theory with dynamical quarks. Through a vortex identification procedure, vortex-removed and vortex-only fields are obtained from the usual Monte Carlo generated gauge fields. QCD interactions for equal-mass fermion flavors are flavor blind. This fact is often used to state that disconnected sea-quark loop contributions are equal for $u$ and $d$ quarks in the mass symmetric case and therefore these disconnected sea-quark loop contributions cannot contribute to the well-known $\bar d - \bar u$ asymmetry in the proton. Instead, it is argued that one must look to the connected sector of lattice QCD correlation functions to find this difference. In this presentation, we note that these statements are true provided unphysical contributions in the sea-quark loop sector are included, contributions from baryons that do not appear in the physical spectrum. To respect the Pauli principle, these unphysical contributions from the disconnected sea-quark loop sector must cancel equally unphysical contributions in the connected sector. The remaining disconnected sea-quark loop contributions no longer have a balance between $\bar d$ and $\bar u$. Upon considering only physically observed baryons in the loop contributions, we illustrate an important contribution from the sea-quark loop sector to $\bar d - \bar u$ that enhances the leading connected contribution by 12\%., Comment: 6 pages, 1 four-panel figure. Quark confinement is perhaps the most important emergent property of the theory of quantum chromodynamics. Herein we review some key aspects of centre vortices in SU(3) lattice gauge theory. Starting from the original Monte Carlo gauge fields, a vortex identification procedure yields vortex-removed and vortex-only backgrounds. The comparison between the original `untouched' Monte Carlo gauge fields and these so called vortex-modified ensembles has provided a variety of results that support the notion that centre vortices are fundamental to confinement in pure gauge theory. The process of renormalisation in nonperturbative Hamiltonian Effective Field Theory (HEFT) is examined in the $\Delta$-resonance scattering channel. As an extension of effective field theory incorporating the L\"uscher formalism, HEFT provides a bridge between the infinite-volume scattering data of experiment and the finite-volume spectrum of energy eigenstates in lattice QCD. HEFT also provides phenomenological insight into the basis-state composition of the finite-volume eigenstates via the state eigenvectors. The Hamiltonian matrix is made finite through the introduction of finite-range regularisation. The extent to which the established features of this regularisation scheme survive in HEFT is examined. In a single-channel $\pi N$ analysis, fits to experimental phase shifts withstand large variations in the regularisation parameter, $\Lambda$, providing an opportunity to explore the sensitivity of the finite-volume spectrum and state composition on the regulator. While the L\"uscher formalism ensures the eigenvalues are insensitive to $\Lambda$ variation in the single-channel case, the eigenstate composition varies with $\Lambda$; the admission of short distance interactions diminishes single-particle contributions to the states. In the two-channel $\pi N$, $\pi \Delta$ analysis, $\Lambda$ is restricted to a small range by the experimental data. Here the inelasticity is particularly sensitive to variations in $\Lambda$ and its associated parameter set. This sensitivity is also manifest in the finite-volume spectrum for states near the opening of the $\pi \Delta$ scattering channel. Finally, HEFT has the unique ability to describe the quark-mass dependence of the finite-volume eigenstates. The robust nature of this capability is presented and used to confront current state-of-the-art lattice QCD calculations., Comment: 21 pages, 22 figures

An extended two-hadron operator is developed to extract the spectra of irreducible representations (irreps) in the finite volume. The irreps of the group for the finite volume system are projected using a coordinate-space operator. The correlation function of this operator is computationally efficient to extract lattice spectra of the specific irrep. In particular, this new formulation only requires propagators to be computed from two distinct source locations, at fixed spatial separation. We perform a proof-of-principle study on a $24^3 \times 48$ lattice volume with $m_\pi\approx 900$ MeV by isolating various spectra of the $\pi\pi$ system with isospin-2 including a range of total momenta and irreps. By applying the L\"uscher formalism, the phase shifts of $S$-, $D$- and $G$-wave $\pi\pi$ scattering with isospin-2 are extracted from the spectra., Comment: 29 Pages, 5 figures

We extend previous work concerning rest-frame partial-wave mixing in Hamiltonian effective field theory to both elongated and moving systems, where two particles are in a periodic elongated cube or have nonzero total momentum, respectively. We also consider the combination of the two systems when directions of the elongation and the moving momentum are aligned. This extension should also be applicable in any Hamiltonian formalism. As a demonstration, we analyze lattice QCD results for the spectrum of an isospin-2 $\pi\pi$ scattering system and determine the $s$, $d$, and $g$ partial-wave scattering information. The anti-kaon nucleon scattering lengths resulting from a Hamiltonian effective field theory analysis of experimental data and lattice QCD studies are presented. The same Hamiltonian is then used to compute the scattering length for the $K^- d$ system, taking careful account of the effects of recoil on the energy at which the $\bar{K}N$ T-matrices are evaluated. These results are then used to estimate the shift and width of the $1S$ levels of anti-kaonic hydrogen and deuterium. The $K^- p$ result is in excellent agreement with the SIDDHARTA measurement. In the $K^- d$ case the imaginary part of the scattering length and consequently the width of the $1S$ state are considerably larger than found in earlier work. This is a consequence of the effect of recoil on the energy of the $\bar{K}N$ energy, which enhances the role of the $\Lambda(1405)$ resonance., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, published version

The recently-introduced Parity Expanded Variational Analysis (PEVA) technique allows for the isolation of baryon eigenstates on the lattice at finite momentum free from opposite-parity contamination. We find that this technique introduces a statistically significant correction in extractions of the electromagnetic form factors of the ground state nucleon. It also allows first extractions of the elastic and transition form factors of nucleon excitations on the lattice. We present the electromagnetic elastic form factors and helicity amplitudes of two odd-parity excitations of the nucleon. The centre vortex structure of the $SU(3)$ gauge field vacuum is explored through the use of novel visualisation techniques. The lattice is partitioned into 3D time slices, and vortices are identified by locating plaquettes with nontrivial centre phases. Vortices are illustrated by rendering vortex lines that pierce these nontrivial plaquettes. Nontrivial plaquettes with one dimension in the suppressed time direction are rendered by identifying the visible spatial link. These visualisations highlight the frequent presence of singular points and reveal an important role for branching points in $SU(3)$ gauge theory in creating high topological charge density regimes. Visualisations of the topological charge density are presented, and an investigation into the correlation between vortex structures and topological charge density is conducted. The results provide new insight into the mechanisms by which centre vortices generate nontrivial gauge field topology. Within general partial-wave mixing, a method for reducing the high dimension of the finite-volume Hamiltonian from Hamiltonian effective field theory is proposed. This method provides a new viewpoint on partial-wave mixing, and a set of matrices that can reflect the degree of partial-wave mixing. First principles calculations of the form factors of baryon excitations are now becoming accessible through advances in Lattice QCD techniques. In this paper, we explore the utility of the parity-expanded variational analysis (PEVA) technique in calculating the Sachs electromagnetic form factors for excitations of the proton and neutron. We study the two lowest-lying odd-parity excitations and demonstrate that at heavier quark masses, these states are dominated by behaviour consistent with constituent quark models for the $N^*(1535)$ and $N^*(1650)$, respectively. We also study the lowest-lying localised even-parity excitation, and find that its form factors are consistent with a radial excitation of the ground state nucleon. A comparison of the results from the PEVA technique with those from a conventional variational analysis exposes the necessity of the PEVA approach in baryon excited-state studies., Comment: 25 pages, 37 figures, 7 tables

The structure of centre vortices in SU(3) gauge-field configurations is examined through modern visualization techniques. Centre vortices are identified through gauge transformations maximizing the centre of the gauge group. Focusing on the thin vortices identified by Wilson loops having a non-trivial centre phase, the vortex structure is illustrated through renderings of oriented spatial plaquettes. Time oriented plaquettes are illustrated by identifying spatial links associated with these non-trivial plaquettes. The results illustrate an important role for the branching of SU(3) centre vortices, possibly through monopole anti-monopole dynamics. Of particular interest is the correlation of the vortex structure and the topological-charge structure of the gauge fields, vital to dynamical chiral symmetry breaking and its associated mass generation. Singular points, where the projected vortex structure contains non-trivial centre phases in associated plaquettes spanning all four dimensions, are observed within the regions of nontrivial topological charge density calculated on the original Monte-Carlo generated configurations. The results provide new insights into the role of centre vortices in underpinning non-trivial topology in gauge fields. They reveal how the removal of centre-vortices necessarily destroys non-trivial topology and destabilizes would-be instantons under smoothing algorithms. The recently-introduced Parity Expanded Variational Analysis (PEVA) technique allows for the isolation of baryon eigenstates at finite momentum free from opposite-parity contamination. In this paper, we establish the formalism for computing form factors of spin-1/2 states using PEVA. Selecting the vector current, we compare the electromagnetic form factors of the ground state nucleon extracted via this technique to a conventional parity-projection approach. Our results show a statistically significant discrepancy between the PEVA and conventional analyses. This indicates that existing calculations of matrix elements of ground state baryons at finite momentum can be affected by systematic errors of ~20% at physical quark masses. The impact of $SU(3)$ centre vortices on the gluon propagator in Landau gauge is investigated on original, vortex-removed and vortex-only lattice gauge field configurations. Vortex identification is found to partition the gluon propagator into short range strength on the vortex removed configurations and long range strength on the vortex only configurations. The effect of smoothing vortex-only configurations is also studied, and a regime for recovering the form of the smoothed original propagator from vortex-only configurations is introduced. An approach for relating the nucleon excited states extracted from lattice QCD and the nucleon resonances of experimental data has been developed using the Hamiltonian effective field theory (HEFT) method. By formulating HEFT in the finite volume of the lattice, the eigenstates of the Hamiltonian model can be related to the energy eigenstates observed in Lattice simulations. By taking the infinite-volume limit of HEFT, information from the lattice is linked to experiment. The approach opens a new window for the study of experimentally-observed resonances from the first principles of lattice QCD calculations. With the Hamiltonian approach, one not only describes the spectra of lattice-QCD eigenstates through the eigenvalues of the finite-volume Hamiltonian matrix, but one also learns the composition of the lattice-QCD eigenstates via the eigenvectors of the Hamiltonian matrix. One learns the composition of the states in terms of the meson-baryon basis states considered in formulating the effective field theory. One also learns the composition of the resonances observed in Nature. The introduction of a uniform background magnetic field breaks three-dimensional spatial symmetry for a charged particle and introduces Landau mode effects. Standard quark operators are inefficient at isolating the nucleon correlation function at nontrivial field strengths. We introduce novel quark operators constructed from the two-dimensional Laplacian eigenmodes that describe a charged particle on a finite lattice. These eigenmode-projected quark operators provide enhanced precision for calculating nucleon energy shifts in a magnetic field. Variational analysis techniques in lattice QCD are powerful tools that give access to the full spectrum of QCD. At zero momentum, these techniques are well established and can cleanly isolate energy eigenstates of either positive or negative parity. In order to compute the form factors of a single energy eigenstate, we must perform a variational analysis at non-zero momentum. When we do this with baryons, we run into issues with parity mixing in the Dirac spinors, as boosted baryons are not eigenstates of parity. Due to this parity mixing, care must be taken to ensure that the projected correlation functions provided by the variational analysis correspond to the same states at zero momentum. This can be achieved through the parity-expanded variational analysis (PEVA) technique, a novel method developed at the University of Adelaide for ensuring the successful and consistent isolation of boosted baryons. Utilising this technique, we are able to compute the form factors of baryon excitations without contamination from other states. An extended multi-hadron operator is developed to extract the spectra of irreducible representations in the finite volume. The irreducible representations of the cubic group are projected using a coordinate-space operator. The correlation function of this operator is computationally efficient to extract lattice spectra. In particular, this new formulation only requires propagator inversions from two distinct locations, at fixed physical separation. We perform a proof-of-principle study on a $24^3 \times 48$ lattice volume with $m_\pi\approx 900$~MeV by isolating the spectra of $A^+_1$, $E^+$ and $T^+_2$ of the $\pi\pi$ system with isospin-2 in the rest frame., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, Contribution to the conference Lattice2017

Drag and lift coefficients of recent FIFA world cup balls are examined. We fit a novel functional form to drag coefficient curves and in the absence of empirical data provide estimates of lift coefficient behaviour via a consideration of the physics of the boundary layer. Differences in both these coefficients for recent balls, which result from surface texture modification, can significantly alter trajectories. Numerical simulations are used to quantify the effect these changes have on the flight paths of various balls. Altitude and temperature variations at recent world cup events are also discussed. We conclude by quantifying the influence these variations have on the three most recent world cup balls, the Brazuca, the Jabulani and the Teamgeist. The positive-parity nucleon spectrum is studied in 2 + 1 flavour lattice QCD in an attempt to discover novel low-lying energy eigenstates in the region of the Roper resonance. In this work, we employ standard three-quark interpolating fields and introduce new local five-quark meson-baryon operators that hold the possibility of revealing new states that have been missed in previous studies. Motivated by phenomenological arguments, five-quark interpolators based on the $\sigma{N}$, $\pi{N}$ and $a_0{N}$ channels are constructed. Two different descriptions of the existing pion-nucleon scattering data in the region of the Roper resonance are constructed. Both descriptions fit the experimental data very well. In one scenario the resonance is the result of strong rescattering between coupled meson-baryon channels, while in the other scenario, the resonance has a large bare-baryon (or quark-model like) component. The predictions of these two scenarios are compared with the latest lattice QCD simulation results in this channel. Consideration of the finite volume spectra, the manner in which the states are excited from the vacuum in lattice QCD and the composition of the states in Hamiltonian effective field theory enable a discrimination of these two different descriptions. We find the second scenario is not consistent with lattice QCD results whereas the first agrees with the lattice QCD constraints. In this scenario, the mass of the quark-model like state is approximately 2 GeV and in the finite volume of the lattice is dressed to place the first radial excitation of the nucleon at 1.9 GeV. Within this description, the infinite-volume Roper resonance is best described as a resonance generated dynamically through strongly coupled meson-baryon channels., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

The light-quark sector of the Lambda(1405) baryon is examined in the context of the recent discovery of a dominant antikaon-nucleon composition at low quark masses. Further evidence for this interpretation of the Lambda(1405) is presented, by calculating the u and d quark contributions to the Lambda(1405) magnetic form factors in lattice QCD. The extent to which these quantities are consistent with the exotic molecular description can then be quantified by comparing the results with the equivalent nucleon form factors. Drawing on a recent extension of the graded-symmetry approach for the flavor-singlet components of the Lambda(1405), the separation of the connected and disconnected contributions is performed in both the flavor-octet and singlet representations. In both cases, the disconnected loop contributions are found to be unexpectedly large. The relationship between the light-quark contributions to the Lambda(1405) magnetic form factor and the connected contributions of the nucleon magnetic form factors is thus confirmed in the case of lattice QCD, establishing compelling evidence for a KN molecular structure of the Lambda(1405) near the physical point., Comment: Accepted for conference INPC2016, 291, C16-09-11, with linked published article Phys. Drawing on experimental data for baryon resonances, Hamiltonian effective field theory (HEFT) is used to predict the positions of the finite-volume energy levels to be observed in lattice QCD simulations. We have studied the low-lying baryons $N^*(1535)$, $N^*(1440)$, and $\Lambda(1405)$. In the initial analysis, the phenomenological parameters of the Hamiltonian model are constrained by experiment and the finite-volume eigenstate energies are a prediction of the model. The agreement between HEFT predictions and lattice QCD results obtained at finite volume is excellent. These lattice results also admit a more conventional analysis where the low-energy coefficients are constrained by lattice QCD results, enabling a determination of resonance properties from lattice QCD itself. The role and importance of various components of the Hamiltonian model are examined in the finite volume. Variational analysis techniques in lattice QCD are powerful tools that give access to the excited state spectrum of QCD. At zero momentum, these techniques are well established and can cleanly isolate energy eigenstates of either positive or negative parity. In order to compute the form factors of a single energy eigenstate, we must perform a variational analysis at non-zero momentum. When we do this with baryons, we run into issues with parity mixing, as boosted baryons are not eigenstates of parity. Using lattice QCD, we reveal a fundamental connection between centre vortices and several key features associated with dynamical chiral symmetry breaking and quark confinement. Calculations are performed in pure SU(3) gauge theory using the chiral overlap fermion action. Starting from the original Monte Carlo gauge fields, a vortex identification procedure yields vortex-removed and vortex-only backgrounds. We examine the static quark potential, the quark mass function, the hadron spectrum, the local topological charge density, and the distribution of instanton-like objects on the original, vortex-removed and vortex-only ensembles. The removal of vortices consistently results in the removal of the corresponding feature associated with dynamical chiral symmetry breaking. In a recent study of the Lambda(1405), the suppression of the strange-quark contribution to the magnetic form factor was interpreted as the discovery of a dominant antikaon-nucleon composition for this low-lying state. We confirm this result by calculating the light u- and d-quark contributions to the Lambda(1405) magnetic form factor in lattice QCD in order to determine the extent to which their contributions support this exotic molecular description. Drawing on the recent graded-symmetry approach for the flavor-singlet components of the Lambda(1405), the separation of connected and disconnected contributions is performed in both the flavor-octet and singlet representations. Spectra are produced in a high-statistics analysis on the PACS-CS dynamical gauge-field configurations with $m_{\pi} = 411\textrm{ MeV}$ via variational analyses of several operator combinations. Despite the introduction of qualitatively different interpolating fields, no new states are observed in the energy regime of the Roper resonance. This result provides further evidence that the low-lying finite-volume scattering states are not localised, and strengthens the interpretation of the Roper as a coupled-channel, dynamically-generated meson-baryon resonance., Comment: 7 Pages, 2 Figures

The pole structure of the $\Lambda(1405)$ is examined by fitting the couplings of an underlying Hamiltonian effective field theory to cross sections of $K^- p$ scattering in the infinite-volume limit. Finite-volume spectra are then obtained from the theory, and compared to lattice QCD results for the mass of the $\Lambda(1405)$. Momentum-dependent, non-separable potentials motivated by the well-known Weinberg-Tomozawa terms are used, with SU(3) flavour symmetry broken in the couplings and masses. In addition, we examine the effect on the behaviour of the spectra from the inclusion of a bare triquark-like isospin-zero basis state. It is found that the cross sections are consistent with the experimental data with two complex poles for the $\Lambda(1405)$, regardless of whether a bare baryon basis state is introduced or not. We examine the phase shifts and inelasticities associated with the $N^*(1440)$ Roper resonance and connect these infinite-volume observables to the finite-volume spectrum of lattice QCD using Hamiltonian effective field theory. We explore three hypotheses for the structure of the Roper resonance. All three hypotheses are able to describe the scattering data well. In the third hypothesis the Roper resonance couples the low-lying bare basis-state component associated with the ground state nucleon with the virtual meson-baryon contributions. Here the non-trivial superpositions of the meson-baryon scattering states are complemented by bare basis-state components explaining their observation in contemporary lattice QCD calculations. The merit of this scenario lies in its ability to not only describe the observed nucleon energy levels in large-volume lattice QCD simulations but also explain why other low-lying states have been missed in today's lattice QCD results for the nucleon spectrum., Comment: 14 pages, 14 figures; version to be published in Phys. The extraction of hadron matrix elements in lattice QCD using the standard two- and three-point correlator functions demands careful attention to systematic uncertainties. One of the most commonly studied sources of systematic error is contamination from excited states. We apply the variational method to calculate the axial vector current $g_{A}$, the scalar current $g_{S}$ and the quark momentum fraction $\left$ of the nucleon and we compare the results to the more commonly used summation and two-exponential fit methods. The results demonstrate that the variational approach offers a more efficient and robust method for the determination of nucleon matrix elements., Comment: 14 pages, 21 figures
