Abstract

We report on subwavelength reflective gratings for hyperspectral applications operating in a very large spectral band (340–1040 nm). Our study concerns a blazed-binary grating having a period of 30 μm and composed of 2D subwavelength structures with size from 120 nm to 350 nm. We demonstrate the manufacturing of the gratings on 3″ wafers by two lithography technologies (e-beam and nanoimprint) followed by classical dry etching process. Optical measurements show that the subwavelength grating approach enables a broadband efficiency, polarization behaviour and wavefront quality improvement with respect to the requirements for the next generation of spectro-imagers for Earth observation missions. An outlook towards spherical substrate based on nanoimprint lithography is also reported with the results of mixed features replication (holes and pillars in the range of 160–330 nm) on a 540 mm concave substrate which demonstrate uniformity and accuracy capabilities over 3″ surface.

Abstract

We report on subwavelength reflective gratings for hyperspectral applications operating in the 340 nm-1040 nm spectral range. The blazed grating period is 30 μm and is composed of 2D subwavelength binary structures with sizes in-between 120 nm and 350 nm. We demonstrate the manufacturing of gratings on 3” wafers by two lithography technologies (e-beam or nanoimprint) followed by dry etching process. These subwavelength gratings enable broadband efficiency which is in average 15%-20% above the efficiency requirement for next generation of spectro-imagers for Earth observation missions and a wavefront error that is much smaller than the 100 nm requirement for space application.

Abstract

We present a study of volume index gratings operating in the form-birefringence regime and what we call the intermediate regime, defined as the regime between form birefringence and the onset of diffraction. The operating regime is characterized by the ratio between the measurement wavelength and the grating period: form birefringence regime below 10, diffraction around 3, and intermediate regime between 10 and 3. The behavior of the gratings in a given regime is studied by plotting the induced retardation as a function of the incidence angle. The shape of the curve fully characterizes the regime. We report on theoretical calculations of retardation by use of a rigorous theory and its experimental validation by measuring retardation of recorded gratings in photopolymers. National audience; Les systèmes d' imagerie conventionnels sont traditionnellement conçus en optimisant la combinaisonoptique de manière à obtenir la meilleure image possible, puis en rehaussant la qualité avec un post-traitement numérique. Une autre approche de conception basée sur les techniques de codage de pupille permet d'augmenter les performances des systèmes existants, notamment la profondeur de champ, et fait l'objet de cette présentation.Les systèmes d' imagerie à codage de pupille comportent une lame de phase insérée dans un planpupillaire et un traitement numérique dédié. La lame de phase rend la scène insensible à une contrainte donnée - aberration, tolérances mécaniques, température ... - au prix d'une dégradation connue de l'image. Le traitement d'image permet par déconvolution de retrouver la qualité de l' image d' origine. L'amélioration significative de la qualité image est obtenue par conception conjointe de la fonction de phase et du traitement d'image [1, 2].Dans ces travaux, l'objectif était d'augmenter la profondeur de champ par codage de pupille d'unecaméra visible haute-définition ouverte à f/1.2. Un masque de phase binaire multi-anneaux a été optimisé conjointement avec le post-traitement, selon le critère de rapport signal à bruit de l'image restaurée [1]. La réalisation du masque et l' implémentation du traitement numérique sur carte FPGA adaptée permettent d' obtenir un système hybride temps réel et basse consommation qui a été caractérisé. Pour cela, nous avons mis en place une méthodologie spécifique de mesure de la Fonction de Transfert de Modulation (FTM) à partir de mires à barres. La comparaison des courbes de FTM et de la qualité des images acquises avec le système conventionnel et le système hybride a permis de valider l'apport du codage de pupille pour une augmentation de la profondeur de champ. Pour des qualités d' image des deux systèmes similaires à grande distance (47m), la qualité image du système à codage de pupille reste stable jusqu'à 4.8m alors que celle du système conventionnel décroit à partir de 12m. Abstract

[EN] The bandwidth demands in mobile communication systems are growing exponentially day by day as the number of users has increased drastically over the last five years. This mobile data explosion, together with the fixed service limitations, requires a new approach to support this increase in bandwidth demand. Solutions based on lower-frequency microwave wireless systems may be able to meet the bandwidth demand in a short term. However, with the small-cell mass deployment requiring total capacities of 1 Gb/s/km2, scalable, multigigabit backhaul systems are required. Millimeter-wave technology fits nicely into these new backhaul scenarios as it provides extended bandwidth for high-capacity links and adaptive throughput rate, which allows efficient and flexible deployment. Besides these advantages, millimeter-wave solutions become even more attractive when the cost of backhaul solutions and the cost of spectrum licenses are factored in. Compared to the cost of laying fiber to a cell base station, which is the only other scalable solution, the millimeter-wave solution becomes the most appropriate approach.

Abstract

International audience; Blazed-binary optical elements with only binary ridges or pillars are diffractive components that mimic standard blazed-echelette diffractive elements. We report on the behavior of one-dimensional blazed-binary optical elements with local periods much larger than the wavelength. For this purpose, an approximate model based on both scalar and electromagnetic theory is proposed. The model is tested against electromagnetic theory computational results obtained for one-dimensional blazed-binary gratings with large periods. An excellent agreement is obtained, showing that the model is able to predict quantitatively the wavelength and the incidence-angle dependences of the diffraction efficiency of blazed-binary structures.

30. Blazed binary diffractive gratings with antireflection coating for improved operation at 10.6 m

Abstract

We report on the design fabrication and characterization a 3-period grating composed of subwavelength ridges of progressively varying widths for operation at 10.6 m. The grating is blazed into the first transmitted order (an efficiency of 80 is measured) under TM polarization and over a broad range of angles of incidence. The fabrication involves contact photolithography, reactive-ion etching, and an evaporation deposition over the etched structure. The result validates the use of photolithography, a low-cost technology, for the manufacture of efficient blazed binary diffractive elements for thermal imaging (the 8- to 12-m IR band). © 2004 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers.
