AbstractThis study investigated multivariate relations between lifetime adverse experiences and past year substance use among lesbian (N = 204, ageM = 23.55) and bisexual emerging adult women (N = 249, ageM = 23.35) recruited online. Canonical correlation analyses documented a higher canonical correlation between variable sets among lesbian compared to bisexual women, differing amounts of shared variance, and different contributions by component variables to the synthetic predictor and criterion variables. The implications of the findings for tailored selected counseling interventions designed to mitigate substance use-related health disparities related to the burden of cumulative lifetime adversity on sexual minority women are discussed.
