The effects of negative triangularity (NT) on boundary plasma turbulence in double-null (DN) configurations are investigated using global, nonlinear, three-dimensional, flux-driven two-fluid simulations. NT plasmas exhibit suppressed interchange-driven instabilities, resulting in enhanced confinement and lower fluctuation levels compared to positive triangularity (PT) plasmas. This reduction in interchange instability is associated with the weakening of curvature effects in the unfavorable region, caused by the stretching of magnetic field lines at the outer midplane. The magnetic disconnection between the turbulent low-field side (LFS) and the quiescent high-field side (HFS) results in most of the heat flux reaching the DN outer targets. In NT plasmas, the power load on the outer target is reduced, while it increases on the inner target, indicating a reduced in-out power asymmetry compared PT plasmas. Furthermore, the analysis of power load asymmetry between the upper and lower targets shows that the up-down power asymmetry is mitigated in NT plasmas, mainly due to the reduced total power crossing the separatrix. The reduction of interchange instabilities in NT plasmas also affects the blob dynamics. A three-dimensional blob analysis reveals that NT plasmas feature smaller blob sizes and slower propagation velocities. Finally, an analytical scaling law for blob size and velocity that includes plasma shaping effects is derived based on the two-region model and is found to qualitatively capture the trends observed in nonlinear simulations., Comment: 33 pages, 9 figures

Spintronic Terahertz emitters, based on optically triggered spin-to-charge interconversion processes, have recently emerged as novel route towards compact and efficient THz sources. Yet, the next challenge for further technologically-relevant devices remains to modulate the emission, with low-energy consumption operation. To this aim, ferroelectric materials coupled to active spin-orbit layers such as two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides are suitable candidates. In this work, we present the realization of a large area heterostructure of CoFeB/PtSe2/MoSe2 on a bi-domain LiNbO3 substrate. Using THz time-domain spectroscopy, we show that the ferroelectric polarization direction induces a sizeable modulation of the THz emission. We rationalise these experimental results by using band structure and spin accumulation calculations that are consistent with an interfacial spin-to-charge conversion mediated by inverse Rashba-Edelstein effect at the MoSe2/PtSe2 interface and being tuned by ferroelectricity in the adjacent LiNbO3 surface. Exceptional points (EPs), branch singularities parameter space of non-Hermitian eigenvalue manifolds, display unique topological phenomena linked to eigenvalue and eigenvector switching: the parameter space states are highly sensitive to the system's parameter changes. Therefore, we suggest investigating the parameter space in the presence of an EP by experimentally accessing and exploiting the topological nature of the coupled system around an EP. We demonstrate control over exceptional points in coupled vortex spin-transfer torque oscillators by adjusting the system's damping through the spin-transfer torque effect and their relative phase. This approach allows for precise manipulation of the coupling behavior in the vicinity of an exceptional point. We report the presence of both level attraction/repulsion by adjusting the system's parameters. Moreover, we evidence the topological nature of the EP by dynamically encircling it in the phase-current parameter space, leading to a switch of the eigenstates. Modern language models are internally -- and mathematically -- distributions over token strings rather than \emph{character} strings, posing numerous challenges for programmers building user applications on top of them. For example, if a prompt is specified as a character string, it must be tokenized before passing it to the token-level language model. Thus, the tokenizer and consequent analyses are very sensitive to the specification of the prompt (e.g., if the prompt ends with a space or not). This paper presents algorithms for converting token-level language models to character-level ones. We present both exact and approximate algorithms. In the empirical portion of the paper, we benchmark the practical runtime and approximation quality. We find that -- even with a small computation budget -- our method is able to accurately approximate the character-level distribution (less than 0.00021 excess bits / character) at reasonably fast speeds (46.3 characters / second) on the Llama 3.1 8B language model.

Longitudinal analyses are increasingly used in clinical studies as they allow the study of subtle changes over time within the same subjects. In most of these studies, it is necessary to align all the images studied to a common reference by registering them to a template. In the study of white matter using the recently developed fixel-based analysis (FBA) method, this registration is important, in particular because the fiber bundle cross-section metric is a direct measure of this registration. In the vast majority of longitudinal FBA studies described in the literature, sessions acquired for a same subject are directly independently registered to the template. However, it has been shown in T1-based morphometry that a 2-step registration through an intra-subject average can be advantageous in longitudinal analyses. In this work, we propose an implementation of this 2-step registration method in a typical longitudinal FBA aimed at investigating the evolution of white matter changes in Alzheimer's disease (AD). We compared at the fixel level the mean absolute effect and standard deviation yielded by this registration method and by a direct registration, as well as the results obtained with each registration method for the study of AD in both fixelwise and tract-based analyses. The semicircular canals of the inner ear are involved in balance and velocity control. Being crucial to ensure efficient mobility, their morphology exhibits an evolutionary conservatism attributed to stabilizing selection. Release of selection in slow-moving animals has been argued to lead to morphological divergence and increased inter-individual variation. In its natural habitat, the house mouse Mus musculus moves in a tridimensional space where efficient balance is required. In contrast, laboratory mice in standard cages are severely restricted in their ability to move, which possibly reduces selection on the inner ear morphology. This effect was tested by comparing four groups of mice: several populations of wild mice trapped in commensal habitats in France; their second-generation laboratory offspring, to assess plastic effects related to breeding conditions; a standard laboratory strain (Swiss) that evolved for many generations in a regime of mobility reduction; and hybrids between wild offspring and Swiss mice. The morphology of the semicircular canals was quantified using a set of 3D landmarks and semi-landmarks analyzed using geometric morphometric protocols. Levels of inter-population, inter-individual (disparity) and intra-individual (asymmetry) variation were compared. All wild mice shared a similar inner ear morphology, in contrast to the important divergence of the Swiss strain. The release of selection in the laboratory strain obviously allowed for an important and rapid drift in the otherwise conserved structure. Shared traits between the inner ear of the lab strain and domestic pigs suggested a common response to mobility reduction in captivity. The lab-bred offspring of wild mice also differed from their wild relatives, suggesting plastic response related to maternal locomotory behavior, since inner ear morphology matures before birth in mammals. The signature observed in lab-bred wild mice and the lab strain was however not congruent, suggesting that plasticity did not participate to the divergence of the laboratory strain. However, contrary to the expectation, wild mice displayed slightly higher levels of inter-individual variation than laboratory mice, possibly due to the higher levels of genetic variance within and among wild populations compared to the lab strain. Differences in fluctuating asymmetry levels were detected, with the laboratory strain occasionally displaying higher asymmetry scores than its wild relatives. We investigate spin-rectification phenomena in canted antiferromagnets, closely connected to the family of altermagnetic materials. Our results show that excitation efficiency is significantly enhanced by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Antiferromagnetic dynamics can be detected through spin-Hall magnetoresistance and bolometric effects, with an efficiency reaching up to mV/W. The rectified voltage shape is influenced by both the symmetry of the exciting torques, detection mechanisms (continuous spin-pumping and spin-Hall magnetoresistance), and the antiferromagnetic crystalline axis. Under high pumping power, we observe a saturation effect related to Suhl-like spin-wave instabilities and a nonlinear redshift of the antiferromagnetic resonance. These findings open new avenues for studying nonlinear dynamics in antiferromagnetic and altermagnetic spintronic devices.

ArborX is a performance portable geometric search library developed as part of the Exascale Computing Project (ECP). In this paper, we explore a collaboration between ArborX and a cosmological simulation code HACC. Large cosmological simulations on exascale platforms encounter a bottleneck due to the in-situ analysis requirements of halo finding, a problem of identifying dense clusters of dark matter (halos). This problem is solved by using a density-based DBSCAN clustering algorithm. With each MPI rank handling hundreds of millions of particles, it is imperative for the DBSCAN implementation to be efficient. In addition, the requirement to support exascale supercomputers from different vendors necessitates performance portability of the algorithm. We describe how this challenge problem guided ArborX development, and enhanced the performance and the scope of the library. We explore the improvements in the basic algorithms for the underlying search index to improve the performance, and describe several implementations of DBSCAN in ArborX. Further, we report the history of the changes in ArborX and their effect on the time to solve a representative benchmark problem, as well as demonstrate the real world impact on production end-to-end cosmology simulations., Comment: Submitted to IJHPCA

This application note discusses the working principle of spin-transfer torque magnetoresistive random access memory (STT-MRAM) and the impact that magnetic fields can have on STT-MRAM operation. Sources of magnetic field and typical magnitudes of magnetic fields are given. Based on the magnitude of commonly encountered external magnetic fields, we show below that magnetic immunity of STT-MRAM is sufficient for most uses once the chip is mounted on a printed circuit board (PCB) or inserted in its working environment. This statement is supported by the experience acquired during 60 years of use of magnetic hard disk drives (HDD) including 20 years of HDD with readers comprising magnetic tunnel junctions, 20+ years of use of magnetic field sensors as position encoders in automotive industry and 15+ years of use of MRAM. Mainly during chip handling does caution need to be exercised to avoid exposing the chip to excessively high magnetic fields.

The NEXT-White detector, a high-pressure gaseous xenon time projection chamber, demonstrated the excellence of this technology for future neutrinoless double beta decay searches using photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) to measure energy and silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) to extract topology information. This analysis uses $^{83m}\text{Kr}$ data from the NEXT-White detector to measure and understand the energy resolution that can be obtained with the SiPMs, rather than with PMTs. The energy resolution obtained of (10.9 $\pm$ 0.6) $\%$, full-width half-maximum, is slightly larger than predicted based on the photon statistics resulting from very low light detection coverage of the SiPM plane in the NEXT-White detector. The difference in the predicted and measured resolution is attributed to poor corrections, which are expected to be improved with larger statistics. Furthermore, the noise of the SiPMs is shown to not be a dominant factor in the energy resolution and may be negligible when noise subtraction is applied appropriately, for high-energy events or larger SiPM coverage detectors. These results, which are extrapolated to estimate the response of large coverage SiPM planes, are promising for the development of future, SiPM-only, readout planes that can offer imaging and achieve similar energy resolution to that previously demonstrated with PMTs.

The imaging of individual Ba$^{2+}$ ions in high pressure xenon gas is one possible way to attain background-free sensitivity to neutrinoless double beta decay and hence establish the Majorana nature of the neutrino. In this paper we demonstrate selective single Ba$^{2+}$ ion imaging inside a high-pressure xenon gas environment. Ba$^{2+}$ ions chelated with molecular chemosensors are resolved at the gas-solid interface using a diffraction-limited imaging system with scan area of 1$\times$1~cm$^2$ located inside 10~bar of xenon gas. This new form of microscopy represents an important enabling step in the development of barium tagging for neutrinoless double beta decay searches in $^{136}$Xe, as well as a new tool for studying the photophysics of fluorescent molecules and chemosensors at the solid-gas interface.

We developed the X-ray, Gamma-ray and Relativistic Electron detector (XGRE) onboard the TARANIS satellite, to investigate high-energy phenomena associated with lightning discharges such as terrestrial gamma-ray flashes and terrestrial electron beams. XGRE consisted of three sensors. Each sensor has one layer of LaBr$_{3}$ crystals for X-ray/gamma-ray detections, and two layers of plastic scintillators for electron and charged-particle discrimination. Since 2018, the flight model of XGRE was developed, and validation and calibration tests, such as a thermal cycle test and a calibration test with the sensors onboard the satellite were performed before the launch of TARANIS on 17 November 2020. The energy range of the LaBr$_{3}$ crystals sensitive to X-rays and gamma rays was determined to be 0.04-11.6 MeV, 0.08-11.0 MeV, and 0.08-11.3 MeV for XGRE1, 2, and 3, respectively. The energy resolution at 0.662 MeV (full width at half maximum) was to be 20.5%, 25.9%, and 28.6%, respectively. Results from the calibration test were then used to validate a simulation model of XGRE and TARANIS. By performing Monte Carlo simulations with the verified model, we calculated effective areas of XGRE to X-rays, gamma rays, electrons, and detector responses to incident photons and electrons coming from various elevation and azimuth angles., Comment: 25 pages, 20 figures, 1 table, published in Journal of Astronomical Telescopes, Instruments, and Systems. Coherent and dissipative couplings, respectively characterised by energy level repulsion and attraction, each have different applications for quantum information processing. Thus, a system in which both coherent and dissipative couplings are tunable on-demand and in-situ is tantalising. A first step towards this goal is the two-tone driving of two bosonic modes, whose experimental signature was shown to exhibit controllable level repulsion and attraction by changing the phase and amplitude of one drive. However, whether the underlying physics is that of coherent and dissipative couplings has not been clarified, and cannot be concluded solely from the measured resonances (or anti-resonances) of the system. Here, we show how the physics at play can be analysed theoretically. Combining this theory with realistic finite-element simulations, we deduce that the observation of level attraction originates from interferences due to the measurement setup, and not dissipative coupling. Beyond the clarification of a novel origin for level attraction attributed to interference, our work demonstrate how effective Hamiltonians can be derived to appropriately describe the physics.

A recent psychology study found that people sometimes reject overly generous offers from people because they imagine hidden ''phantom costs'' must be part of the transaction. Phantom costs occur when a person seems overly generous for no apparent reason. This study aims to explore whether people can imagine phantom costs when interacting with a robot. To this end, screen or physically embodied agents (human or robot) offered to people either a cookie or a cookie + \$2. Participants were then asked to make a choice whether they would accept or decline the offer. Results showed that people did perceive phantom costs in the offer + \$2 conditions when interacting with a human, but also with a robot, across both embodiment levels, leading to the characteristic behavioral effect that offering more money made people less likely to accept the offer. While people were more likely to accept offers from a robot than from a human, people more often accepted offers from humans when they were physically compared to screen embodied but were equally likely to accept the offer from a robot whether it was screen or physically embodied. This suggests that people can treat robots (and humans) as social agents with hidden intentions and knowledge, and that this influences their behavior toward them. This provides not only new insights on how people make decisions when interacting with a robot but also how robot embodiment impacts HRI research., Comment: 35 pages, 6 figures

We show that the use of an optical frequency comb probe leads to dramatically improved bandwidth (as high as 12+/-1 MHz) for the detection of modulated radio frequencies in Rydberg atom-based electrometry.

Stackless traversal is a technique to speed up range queries by avoiding usage of a stack during the tree traversal. One way to achieve that is to transform a given binary tree to store a left child and a skip-connection (also called an escape index). In general, this operation requires an additional tree traversal during the tree construction. For some tree structures, however, it is possible achieve the same result at a reduced cost. We propose one such algorithm for a GPU hierarchy construction algorithm proposed by Karras in [Karras, 2012]. Furthermore, we show that our algorithm also works with the improved algorithm proposed by Apetrei in [Apetrei, 2014], despite a different ordering of the internal nodes. We achieve that by modifying the Apetrei's algorithm to restore the original Karras' ordering of the internal nodes. Using the modified algorithm, we show how to construct a hierarchy suitable for a stackless traversal in a single bottom-up pass., Comment: 6 pages

This paper presents \pandora, a novel parallel algorithm for efficiently constructing dendrograms for single-linkage hierarchical clustering, including \hdbscan. Traditional dendrogram construction methods from a minimum spanning tree (MST), such as agglomerative or divisive techniques, often fail to efficiently parallelize, especially with skewed dendrograms common in real-world data. \pandora addresses these challenges through a unique recursive tree contraction method, which simplifies the tree for initial dendrogram construction and then progressively reconstructs the complete dendrogram. This process makes \pandora asymptotically work-optimal, independent of dendrogram skewness. All steps in \pandora are fully parallel and suitable for massively threaded accelerators such as GPUs. Our implementation is written in Kokkos, providing support for both CPUs and multi-vendor GPUs (e.g., Nvidia, AMD). The multithreaded version of \pandora is 2.2$\times$ faster than the current best-multithreaded implementation, while the GPU \pandora implementation achieved 6-20$\times$ on \amdgpu and 10-37$\times$ on \nvidiagpu speed-up over multithreaded \pandora. These advancements lead to up to a 6-fold speedup for \hdbscan on GPUs over the current best, which only offload MST construction to GPUs and perform multithreaded dendrogram construction.

We propose a new system of equations which identifies the helix common to all drift distance hits produced by a full stereo drift chamber detector when a charged particle passes through this detector. The equation system is obtained using the Apollonius' problem as guideline which gives it a very simple form and a clear physics interpretability as the case of full axial drift chamber detector. The proposed method is evaluated using drift distance hits constructed from Monte Carlo-generated helix trajectory tracks. The equation system is solved using a robust accelerated GPU brute-force algorithm based on interval arithmetic. All code is written using the Julia programming language.

NEXT-100 is currently being constructed at the Laboratorio Subterr\'aneo de Canfranc in the Spanish Pyrenees and will search for neutrinoless double beta decay using a high-pressure gaseous time projection chamber (TPC) with 100 kg of xenon. Charge amplification is carried out via electroluminescence (EL) which is the process of accelerating electrons in a high electric field region causing secondary scintillation of the medium proportional to the initial charge. The NEXT-100 EL and cathode regions are made from tensioned hexagonal meshes of 1 m diameter. This paper describes the design, characterization, and installation of these parts for NEXT-100. Simulations of the electric field are performed to model the drift and amplification of ionization electrons produced in the detector under various EL region alignments and rotations. Measurements of the electrostatic breakdown voltage in air characterize performance under high voltage conditions and identify breakdown points. The electrostatic deflection of the mesh is quantified and fit to a first-principles mechanical model. Measurements were performed with both a standalone test EL region and with the NEXT-100 EL region before its installation in the detector. Noble element time projection chambers are a leading technology for rare event detection in physics, such as for dark matter and neutrinoless double beta decay searches. Time projection chambers typically assign event position in the drift direction using the relative timing of prompt scintillation and delayed charge collection signals, allowing for reconstruction of an absolute position in the drift direction. In this paper, alternate methods for assigning event drift distance via quantification of electron diffusion in a pure high pressure xenon gas time projection chamber are explored. Data from the NEXT-White detector demonstrate the ability to achieve good position assignment accuracy for both high- and low-energy events. Using point-like energy deposits from $^{83\mathrm{m}}$Kr calibration electron captures ($E\sim45$keV), the position of origin of low-energy events is determined to $2~$cm precision with bias $< 1$mm. A convolutional neural network approach is then used to quantify diffusion for longer tracks (E$\geq$1.5MeV), yielding a precision of 3cm on the event barycenter. The precision achieved with these methods indicates the feasibility energy calibrations of better than 1% FWHM at Q$_{\beta\beta}$ in pure xenon, as well as the potential for event fiducialization in large future detectors using an alternate method that does not rely on primary scintillation., Comment: 18 pages, 16 figures

In a previous paper, the first two authors classified complete Ricci-flat ALF Riemannian 4-manifolds that are toric and Hermitian, but non-Kaehler. In this article, we consider general Ricci-flat deformations of such spaces, assuming only suitable fall-off conditions. Quite generally, we are able to show that such a deformation must be Hermitian, and must carry a non-trivial Killing vector field with fixed asymptotics. With mild additional hypotheses, we are then able to show that the new Ricci-flat metric must in fact belong to the family of previously classified metrics., Comment: 25 pages, LaTeX2e. Bound states in the continuum (BICs) are localized states existing within a continuous spectrum of delocalized waves. Emerging multilayer photonic integrated circuit (PIC) platforms allow implementation of low index 1D guided modes within a high-index 2D slab mode continuum; however, conventional wisdom suggests that this always leads to large radiation losses. Here we demonstrate low-loss BIC guided modes for multiple mode polarizations and spatial orders in single- and multi-ridge low-index waveguides within a two-layer heterogeneously integrated electro-optically active photonic platform. The transverse electric (TE) polarized quasi-BIC guided mode with low, <1.4 dB/cm loss enables a Mach-Zehnder electro-optic amplitude modulator comprising a single straight Si3N4 ridge waveguide integrated with a continuous LiNbO3 slab layer. The abrupt optical transitions at the edges of the slab function as compact and efficient directional couplers eliminating the need for additional components. The modulator exhibits a low insertion loss of 2.3 dB and a high extinction ratio of 25 dB. The developed general theoretical model may enable innovative BIC-based approaches for important PIC functions, such as agile spectral filtering and switching, and may suggest new photonic architectures for quantum and neural network applications based on controlled interactions between multiple guided and delocalized modes.

Sensing platforms based upon photonic integrated circuits have shown considerable promise; however, they require corresponding advancements in integrated optical readout technologies. Here, we present an on-chip spectrometer that leverages an integrated thin-film lithium niobate modulator to produce a frequency-agile electro-optic frequency comb for interrogating chip-scale temperature and acceleration sensors. The chirped comb process allows for ultralow radiofrequency drive voltages, which are as much as seven orders of magnitude less than the lowest found in the literature and are generated using a chip-scale, microcontroller-driven direct digital synthesizer. The on-chip comb spectrometer is able to simultaneously interrogate both an on-chip temperature sensor and an off-chip, microfabricated optomechanical accelerometer with cutting-edge sensitivities of $\approx 5\ {\mu} \mathrm{K} \cdot \mathrm{Hz}^{-1/2}$ and $\approx 130\ \mu \mathrm{m} \cdot \mathrm{s}^{-2} \cdot \mathrm{Hz}^{-1/2}$, respectively. This platform is compatible with a broad range of existing photonic integrated circuit technologies, where its combination of frequency agility and ultralow radiofrequency power requirements are expected to have applications in fields such as quantum science and optical computing., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

Online questionnaires that use crowd-sourcing platforms to recruit participants have become commonplace, due to their ease of use and low costs. Artificial Intelligence (AI) based Large Language Models (LLM) have made it easy for bad actors to automatically fill in online forms, including generating meaningful text for open-ended tasks. These technological advances threaten the data quality for studies that use online questionnaires. This study tested if text generated by an AI for the purpose of an online study can be detected by both humans and automatic AI detection systems. While humans were able to correctly identify authorship of text above chance level (76 percent accuracy), their performance was still below what would be required to ensure satisfactory data quality. Researchers currently have to rely on the disinterest of bad actors to successfully use open-ended responses as a useful tool for ensuring data quality. Automatic AI detection systems are currently completely unusable. If AIs become too prevalent in submitting responses then the costs associated with detecting fraudulent submissions will outweigh the benefits of online questionnaires. Individual attention checks will no longer be a sufficient tool to ensure good data quality. This problem can only be systematically addressed by crowd-sourcing platforms. They cannot rely on automatic AI detection systems and it is unclear how they can ensure data quality for their paying clients.
