Abstract: Copolymerization of isoprene (IP) with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) was performed under RAFT (reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer) polymerization conditions in a platform for high-output experimentation. Covering the range between 1 and 0.2 molar fraction of IP in the feed, four sets of reactions were carried out at 10, 15, 20, and 30 h at 115 °C. The kinetic data obtained were used to estimate the reactivity ratios using a nonlinear least-squares approach (NLLS). Reactivity ratios rGMA = 0.61 and rIP = 0.74 indicate that both monomers tend to crosspropagate in agreement with known literature values. Concerning the RAFT study, relatively good control and livingness of the copolymerization was observed except for the experiment in which IP represents 20 mol % in the feed. 1H NMR characterization confirmed the presence of both monomers in the final copolymer, particularly the presence of the epoxy ring of GMA which is susceptible to post polymerization reactions. Finally, preliminary results on the hydrogenation of various polymers are discussed.

Abstract: Background Both classes of transposable elements (DNA and RNA) are tightly regulated at the transcriptional level leading to the inactivation of transposition via epigenetic mechanisms. Due to the high copies number of these elements, the hypothesis has emerged that their regulation can coordinate a regulatory network of genes. Herein, we investigated whether transposition regulation of HsMar1, a human DNA transposon, differs in presence or absence of endogenous HsMar1 copies. In the case where HsMar1 transposition is regulated, the number of repetitive DNA sequences issued by HsMar1 and distributed in the human genome makes HsMar1 a good candidate to regulate neighboring gene expression by epigenetic mechanisms. Results A recombinant active HsMar1 copy was inserted in HeLa (human) and CHO (hamster) cells and its genomic excision monitored. We show that HsMar1 excision is blocked in HeLa cells, whereas CHO cells are competent to promote HsMar1 excision. We demonstrate that de novo HsMar1 insertions in HeLa cells (human) undergo rapid silencing by cytosine methylation and apposition of H3K9me3 marks, whereas de novo HsMar1 insertions in CHO cells (hamster) are not repressed and enriched in H3K4me3 modifications. The overall analysis of HsMar1 endogenous copies in HeLa cells indicates that neither full-length endogenous inactive copies nor their Inverted Terminal Repeats seem to be specifically silenced, and are, in contrast, devoid of epigenetic marks. Finally, the setmar gene, derived from HsMar1, presents H3K4me3 modifications as expected for a human housekeeping gene. Conclusions Our work highlights that de novo and old HsMar1 are not similarly regulated by epigenetic mechanisms. Old HsMar1 are generally detected as lacking epigenetic marks, irrespective their localisation relative to the genes. Considering the putative existence of a network associating HsMar1 old copies and SETMAR, two non-mutually exclusive hypotheses are proposed: active and inactive HsMar1 copies are not similarly regulated or/and regulations concern only few loci (and few genes) that cannot be detected at the whole genome level. Abstract: International audience; The main principle of Resonant Ultrasound Spectroscopy (RUS) measurement method is to excite a sample and to deduce its elastic constants from its free mechanical resonant frequencies. The goal of this paper is to propose an application of RUS in the case of wood cubic samples by: (1) using frequencies and mode shapes (or vibration patterns) of the free resonant modes in an iterative numerical procedure to solve the inverse problem for identifying components of the stiffness tensor of the sample’s material, (2) finding the limits and optimizing the robustness of the identification procedure in the case of wood and (3) applying it to a large density range of wood samples. Specific continuous waves have been used as excitation signal in order to experimentally determine the free resonant frequencies and mode shapes of the sample in a faster way by means of Scanning Doppler Vibrometer measurements. Afterward, the stiffness tensor was derived by solving iteratively an inverse problem. The gain of using the mode shapes in the inverse identification procedure is demonstrated to be particularly necessary for wood, especially for pairing each measured frequency with its corresponding theoretically predicted one, as viscoelastic damping causes the resonant peaks to overlap and/or disappear. A sensitivity analysis of each elastic constant on the measured resonant frequencies has thus been performed. It shows that, in its current state of development, not all of the elastic constants can be identified robustly and a modified identification procedure is thus proposed. This modified procedure has been applied successfully to wood samples with a large density range, including softwood and hardwood, and particularly non-homogeneous wood species or with specific anatomical features.

Abstract: Advanced gravitational-wave detectors such as the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatories (LIGO) require an unprecedented level of isolation from the ground. When in operation, they are expected to observe changes in the space-time continuum of less than one thousandth of the diameter of a proton. Strong teleseismic events like earthquakes disrupt the proper functioning of the detectors, and result in a loss of data until the detectors can be returned to their operating states. An earthquake early-warning system, as well as a prediction model have been developed to help understand the impact of earthquakes on LIGO. This paper describes a control strategy to use this early-warning system to reduce the LIGO downtime by 30%. It also presents a plan to implement this new earthquake configuration in the LIGO automation system.

Abstract: International audience; Laboratory physical modeling and laser-based experiments are frequently proposed to tackle theoretical and methodological issues related to seismic prospecting, e.g., when experimental validations of processing or inversion techniques are required. Lasers are mainly used to simulate typical field acquisition setups on homogeneous and consolidated materials assembled into laboratory-scale physical models (PMs) of various earth structures. We suggested the use of granular materials to study seismic-wave propagation in unconsolidated and porous media and target near-surface exploration and hydrogeologic applications. We designed and tested the reproducibility of an experimental procedure to build and probe PMs consisting of micrometric glass beads (GBs). A mechanical source and a laser-Doppler vibrometer were used to record small-scale seismic lines at the surface of three GBs models. When guided surface acoustic mode theory should prevail in such unconsolidated granular packed structure under gravity, we only considered elastic-wave propagation in stratified media to interpret recorded data. Thanks to basic seismic processing and inversion methods (first arrivals and dispersion analyses), we were able to correctly retrieve the gradients of pressure- and shear-wave velocities in our models. A 3D elastic finite difference simulation of the experiment offered, despite significant differences in terms of amplitudes, a supplementary validation of our approximation, as far as elastic properties of the medium were concerned.

Abstract: New polyacrylates bearing an electropolymerizable bi or terthiophene group have been synthesized via classical radical polymerization and via RAFT process. Polymerizations can be controlled if thiophene moieties have protected α positions; otherwise polymerization is difficult or impossible. Cross-linked polymers can be obtained after film electropolymerizations on different electrodes (gold, carbon and platinum).

Abstract: Absolute dating of mortars is crucial when trying to pin down construction phases of archaeological sites and historic stone buildings to a certain point in time or to confirm, but possibly also challenge, existing chronologies. To evaluate various sample preparation methods for radiocarbon (14C) dating of mortars as well as to compare different dating methods, i.e.14C and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL), a mortar dating intercomparison study (MODIS) was set up, exploring existing limits and needs for further research. Four mortar samples were selected and distributed among the participating laboratories: one of which was expected not to present any problem related to the sample preparation methodologies for anthropogenic lime extraction, whereas all others addressed specific known sample preparation issues. Data obtained from the various mortar dating approaches are evaluated relative to the historical framework of the mortar samples and any deviation observed is contextualized to the composition and specific mineralogy of the sampled material.

Abstract: Voice activity and overlapped speech detection (respectively VAD and OSD) are key pre-processing tasks for speaker diarization. The final segmentation performance highly relies on the robustness of these sub-tasks. Recent studies have shown VAD and OSD can be trained jointly using a multi-class classification model. However, these works are often restricted to a specific speech domain, lacking information about the generalization capacities of the systems. This paper proposes a complete and new benchmark of different VAD and OSD models, on multiple audio setups (single/multi-channel) and speech domains (e.g. media, meeting...). Our 2/3-class systems, which combine a Temporal Convolutional Network with speech representations adapted to the setup, outperform state-of-the-art results. We show that the joint training of these two tasks offers similar performances in terms of F1-score to two dedicated VAD and OSD systems while reducing the training cost. This unique architecture can also be used for single and multichannel speech processing.

Abstract: International audience; We present a method for the recovery of complex wavenumber information via spatial Laplace transforms of spatiotemporal wave propagation measurements. The method aids in the analysis of acoustic attenuation phenomena and is applied in three different scenarios: (i) Lamb-like modes in air-saturated porous materials in the low kHz regime, where the method enables the recovery of viscoelastic parameters; (ii) Lamb modes in a Duralumin plate in the MHz regime, where the method demonstrates the effect of leakage on the splitting of the forward S-1 and backward S-2 modes around the Zero-Group Velocity point; and (iii) surface acoustic waves in a two-dimensional microscale granular crystal adhered to a substrate near 100 MHz, where the method reveals the complex wave-numbers for an out-of-plane translational and two in-plane translational-rotational resonances. This method provides physical insight into each system and serves as a unique tool for analyzing spatiotemporal measurements of propagating waves. Published by AIP Publishing.

Abstract: International audience; The search for novel compounds of marine origin has increased in the last decades for their application in various areas such as pharmaceutical, human or animal nutrition, cosmetics or bioenergy. In this context of blue technology development, microalgae are of particular interest due to their immense biodiversity and their relatively simple growth needs. In this review, we discuss about the promising use of microalgae and microalgal compounds as sources of natural antibiotics against human pathogens but also about their potential to limit microbial infections in aquaculture. An alternative to conventional antibiotics is needed as the microbial resistance to these drugs is increasing in humans and animals. Furthermore, using natural antibiotics for livestock could meet the consumer demand to avoid chemicals in food, would support a sustainable aquaculture and present the advantage of being environmentally friendly. Using natural and renewable microalgal compounds is still in its early days, but considering the important research development and rapid improvement in culture, extraction and purification processes, the valorization of microalgae will surely extend in the future.

Abstract: Bio-based polyurethane foam (PUF) was synthesized by a one-shot polymerization using hydroxyl telechelic natural rubber (HTNR) and polycaprolactone (PCL) diols as a soft segment. The effect of HTNR/PCL diol molar ratio (1/0, 1/0.5, 1/1 and 0.5/1) on the foam formation rate and physical and mechanical properties of the resulting PUF was investigated. The formation of urethane linkage and cross-linked structure were confirmed by FTIR analysis. The foams observed by scanning electron microscope revealed to have almost closed cells. The molar ratio of HTNR/PCL diol affected the foam formation rate, the average diameter of cell, the regularity of cell shape, the elongation at break and the compressive strength. The foam density slightly changed with this molar ratio whereas the specific tensile strength of all samples was in the same range. All PUFs showed relatively high compression set. The biodegradability was assessed according to a modified Sturm test. Low density polyethylene and sodium benzoate were used as a negative and positive control sample, respectively. PUF samples showed an induction time of 33 days in which the percentage of biodegradation was ~7–11 %. At the end of testing (60 days), the highest degradation (45.6 %) was found in the sample containing 1/0.5 of HTNR/PCL diol molar ratio.

Abstract: International audience; This paper computes the phase velocity dispersion curves of coherent surface waves by taking into account multiple scattering in an elastic matrix containing elastic circular inclusions. The computed dispersion curves are inverted with a global neighborhood algorithm that considers a stratified medium with linear homogeneous and isotropic elastic layers. The impact of multiple scattering on the results is quantified. Since the surface wave phase velocity is not constant with frequency, the inversion provides solutions composed of homogeneous layers. The shear wave velocity profiles of the inverted medium and their impact on concrete porosity estimation is the subject of discussion.

Abstract: International audience; In this work the non-destructive monitoring of the self-healing progress of cracked mortars is presentedthrough the use of three combined methods: nonlinear Coda Wave Interferometry, 3D microscopy and Xray computed microtomography (CT). The aim of the acoustic method is to compare, at various healingstages, both the ultrasonic velocity variations and decorrelation coefficients between a reference codasignal and a signal perturbed by a high level lower-frequency elastic wave. The decrease in the relativevariation of the extracted nonlinearities demonstrates its ability to accurately monitor global crack filling.3D microscopy also reveals this capability. Measurement results of these two techniques agree for theinfluence of age at cracking on healing potential. In reducing the voxel size to 12 lm, X-ray CT imagesconfirm the creation of localized bridges between crack faces and provide information on their location.

Abstract: International audience; Combining ab initio modeling and 57 Fe Mössbauer spectrometry, we characterized the nature of the chemical linkage of aminoalkyl arenediazonium salt on the surface of iron oxide nanoparticles. We established that it is built through a metal-oxygen-carbon bonding and not a metal-carbon one, as usually suggested and commonly observed in previously studied metal-or carbon-based surfaces.

Abstract: Efficiency of ionic liquid supported organotin reagents in Stille cross-coupling reactions involving aryl bromides has been investigated. In a general manner, products were isolated with good yields by using a very simple catalytic system without the need of solvent, ligand, or additives. The organotin compounds were recycled without loss of activity and the contamination by tin was limited and controlled ([Sn] < 3 ppm).

Abstract: Summary: Composite polyurethane/polyaniline (PU/PANI) films have been chemically prepared by oxidative in-situ polymerization of aniline inside the previously swelled PU film. Swelling kinetic studies have shown that for PU films the swelling degree of aniline is 25 wt.%. The dielectric and electrical properties of the composite films were measured using dielectric relaxation spectroscopy and four-probe method. Dielectric measurements as a function of temperature and frequency revealed the presence of a relaxation process for the composite PU/PANI-HCl film. This relaxation was explained in terms of interfacial polarization due to the double-layered structure of the composite film. The activation energy values found by dielectric and electrical measurements are close and this result confirms the conducting character of the PANI containing layer.

Abstract: New ionic-liquid-supported tin reagents were synthesized and used in Stille cross-coupling reactions. High yields of biaryls were obtained under low-temperature, solvent-free, ligand-free conditions, with simple purification techniques. Moreover, the tin compound could be recycled up to five times without significant loss of reactivity. An expanded catalytic cycle for the Stille cross coupling reaction is proposed in order to explain side products that were formed under certain reaction conditions.(© Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Abstract: International audience; Migration and sedimentation of solid particles in a liquid are physical phenomena involving accumulation of soft matter or decantation of fragmented matter. A thorough understanding together with relevant measurements are prerequisites regarding many fields, including medicine, galenic pharmacology, food processing, and the cosmetics industry. In this paper, we investigate the feasibility of monitoring and detecting the migration of a nanoparticle cloud with a resonant light probe. For this purpose, hybrid silicon/silica/UV210 organic integrated photonic racetrack resonators were patterned by thin film processes to be used as sensors measuring the outcome of the impact of a cloud of nanoparticles, the dynamic migration plus sedimentation phenomenon of the nanoparticle cloud in water. A broadband superluminescent diode has been used for the excitation. Then, the spectral characteristics of the resonant guided modes have been analyzed, considering the observed changes while tracking the free spectral range of the transduced comb spectra as a function of time. The way to operate can be summarized as follows: Solutions based on spherical silica nanoparticles of fixed size are prepared and subjected to rheological measurements to obtain their respective viscosities. Next, a millimeter tank filled with water is conveniently placed on the active surface of the sensing chip, prior to the addition of one of the previously mentioned solutions. The series of spectra are acquired during the whole migration sequence and the transduced optical signal is then directly processed and treated by a specific code operated in real time by way of Lagrange interpolation polynomials. Collected data are then compared to a simple theoretical model describing the sedimentation of a spherical particle in water (Stokes' law). Eventually, the implementation of the device in a characterization platform and the development of a specific protocol allows a global treatment, whose description is followed by discussions on measurements and data. Consequently, after the impact of the drop containing the nanoparticles, the monitoring of a first phase regarding their fast cloud migration into the global study volume (with flow of matter plus vortex) eventually followed by their slow sedimentation, can be detected using such a resonant light probe. The overall duration of the first phase associated with sedimentation velocities is in the order of a few tens of µm/min for particles with submicron diameters (several hundreds of nanometers); a first attempt of comparison of this first phase with the results of the classic Stokes model would give a convergence of the values reaching between 9 and 19% for the sedimentation rates.

Abstract: In this paper, a generalization of Poiseuille’s law for a self-similar fluid flow through a tube having a rough surface is proposed. The originality of this work is to consider, simultaneously, the self-similarity structure of the fluid and the roughness of the tube surface. This study can have a wide range of applications, for example, for fractal fluid dynamics in hydrology. The roughness of the tube surface presents a fractal structure that can be described by the surface fractal noninteger dimensions. Complex fluids that are invariant to changes in scale (self-similar) are modeled as a continuous medium in noninteger dimensional spaces. In this work, the analytical solution of the Navier–Stokes equations for the case of a self-similar fluid flow through a rough “fractal” tube is presented. New expressions of the velocity profiles, the fluid discharge, and the friction factor are determined analytically and plotted numerically. These expressions contain fractal dimensions describing the effects of the fractal aspect of the fluid and of that of the tube surface. This approach reveals some very important results. For the velocity profile to represent a physical solution, the fractal dimension of the fluid ranges between 0.5 and 1. This study also qualitatively demonstrates that self-similar fluids have shear thickening-like behavior. The fractal (self-similarity) nature of the fluid and the roughness of the surface both have a huge impact on the dynamics of the flow. The fractal dimension of the fluid affects the amplitude and the shape of the velocity profile, which loses its parabolic shape for some values of the fluid fractal dimension. By contrast, the roughness of the surface affects only the amplitude of the velocity profile. Nevertheless, both the fluid’s fractal dimension and the surface roughness have a major influence on the behavior of the fluid, and should not be neglected.

Abstract: Quinoline 12 was obtained by a Friedlander reaction from 2-aminobenzaldehyde and methyl acetoacetate. Reduction, silylation then oxidation provided compound 8a. A Pictet–Spengler reaction between the latter and tryptophan methyl ester yielded compound 14, then compound 7 by desilylation. Numerous attempts to prepare a cyclized derivative of this analogue of lavendamycin 7 by conventional ways failed. Fortunately, a good result was obtained via a hemiaminal intermediate and compound 21 was thus obtained in satisfactory yield. A conjugate addition occurred in the course of its reduction which led to compound 22. Biological tests were carried out with compound 7 and the conformationally restricted analogues 21 and 22.

Abstract: International audience; Exploration of the dynamical response of an inclined granular packing before the avalanche starts allows a study of the dynamical transition from a static packing to a flowing one and brings information which may be helpful for the prediction of the occurrence of the avalanche. During inclination, small rearrangements implying only a few grains are first detected. The size and the rate of these rearrangements increase with the inclination angle. At some stage, large amplitude and quasi periodical events are observed. These events, called precursors, consist of collective motions of grains. Other studies [2] showed that the precursors are bulk phenomena and allowed to interpret these events as reorganizations of the weak-contact sub network occurring in the packing.Besides optical imaging techniques which give access to grain motion and rearrangements during the tilting, acoustic methods can be experimentally used to detect precursors and to probe internal rearrangements in the bulk of the granular layer. Because part of the acoustic wave energy transports through the contact network and the elastic beads of the medium, the probing methods based on the monitoring of acoustic signatures are sensitive to changes in the elastic properties of the granular layer. We give an overview of the acoustic probing methods implemented previously in the experiments of granular layer destabilization. They can be divided in two groups, the passive methods where acoustic sensors are used to listen to the sounds emitted by the destabilized layer itself and the active methods where an acoustic signal with desired properties is generated and detected by transducers in the medium. Systematic experiments of granular layer destabilization for various granular media and external conditions are compared and allow better understanding of the mechanisms responsible for the appearance, periodicity and intensity of precursors.

Abstract: International audience; The one-step synthesis of azlactone-functionalized SG1-based alkoxyamine (AzSG1) for the design of functional polymers by nitroxide-mediated polymerization (NMP) is reported. At 347.7 K, its dissociation rate constant, kd, was determined to be 2.72 x 10(-4) s(-1), leading to an activation energy, E-a, of 119.5 kJ mol(-1), which represents the lowest value ever reported for a secondary SG1-based alkoxyamine without any activation by an external stimulus. This was ascribed to enhanced stabilization of the released radical compared to other secondary alkyl radicals. The AzSG1 alkoxyamine was successfully used for the NMP for styrene, n-butyl acrylate, and methyl methacrylate with the addition of a small amount of acrylonitrile as a comonomer, without the need for free SG1. In all cases, first-order kinetics, good control with low dispersities (D = 1.2-1.4), and high living chain fractions (LF similar to 90%) were obtained. As a proof of concept, the conjugation of azlactone-functionalized polymers to benzylamine and lysozyme was successfully demonstrated. This work may be of high interest for conjugation as the azlactone functionality is also known to react with other nucleophiles such as alcohols or thiols.

Abstract: Exploration of the dynamical response of an inclined granular packing before the avalanche starts allows a study of the dynamical transition from a static packing to a flowing one and brings information which may be helpful for the prediction of the occurrence of the avalanche. During inclination, small rearrangements implying only a few grains are first detected. The size and the rate of these rearrangements increase with the inclination angle. At some stage, large amplitude and quasi periodical events are observed. These events, called precursors, consist of collective motions of grains. Other studies showed that the precursors are bulk phenomena and allowed to interpret these events as reorganizations of the weak-contact sub network occurring in the packing. Besides optical imaging techniques which give access to grain motion and rearrangements during the tilting, acoustic methods can be experimentally used to detect precursors and to probe internal rearrangements in the bulk of the granular layer. Because part of the acoustic wave energy transports through the contact network and the elastic beads of the medium, the probing methods based on the monitoring of acoustic signatures are sensitive to changes in the elastic properties of the granular layer. We give an overview of the acoustic probing methods implemented previously in the experiments of granular layer destabilization. They can be divided in two groups, the passive methods where acoustic sensors are used to listen to the sounds emitted by the destabilized layer itself and the active methods where an acoustic signal with desired properties is generated and detected by transducers in the medium. Systematic experiments of granular layer destabilization for various granular media and external conditions are compared and allow better understanding of the mechanisms responsible for the appearance, periodicity and intensity of precursors.

Abstract: The Region Languedoc-Roussillon is the umbrella organisation for an interconnected and integrated project on AHA covering the 3 pillars of the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing. All sub-activities (A1: electronic pharmaceutical file, A2: falls prevention initiative, A3: frailty, B3: chronic respiratory diseases, chronic diseases with comorbidities, oral health and hepatitis virus C chronic infection, C2 and D4 active and independent living and handicap) are included in MACVIA-LR that has a strong political commitment and includes all stakeholders (public, private, patients, policy makers). It is one of the Reference Sites of the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing built around chronic diseases, ageing and handicap. The framework of MACVIA-LR has the vision that the prevention and management of CDs is essential for AHA promotion and for the reduction of handicap. The main objective of MACVIA-LR is to develop innovative solutions for a network of Living Labs in order to improve the care of patients affected by CDs in the Languedoc-Roussillon area and to disseminate the innovation.

Abstract: This broad review summarizes recent advances and "hot"research topics in nanophononics and elastic, acoustic, and mechanical metamaterials based on results presented by the authors at the EUROMECH 610 Colloquium held on April 25-27, 2022 in Benicássim, Spain. The key goal of the colloquium was to highlight important developments in these areas, particularly new results that emerged during the last two years. This work thus presents a "snapshot"of the state-of-the-art of different nanophononics- and metamaterial-related topics rather than a historical view on these subjects, in contrast to a conventional review article. The introduction of basic definitions for each topic is followed by an outline of design strategies for the media under consideration, recently developed analysis and implementation techniques, and discussions of current challenges and promising applications. This review, while not comprehensive, will be helpful especially for early-career researchers, among others, as it offers a broad view of the current state-of-the-art and highlights some unique and flourishing research in the mentioned fields, providing insight into multiple exciting research directions., Nanophotonics, 12 (4), ISSN:2192-8614

Abstract: We study the dynamic surface response of neolithic stone settlements obtained with seismic ambient noise techniques near the city of Carnac in French Brittany. Surprisingly, we find that menhirs (neolithic human size standing alone granite stones) with an aspect ratio between 1 and 2 periodically arranged atop a thin layer of sandy soil laid on a granite bedrock, exhibit fundamental resonances in the range of 10 to 25 Hz. We propose an analogic Kelvin-Voigt viscoelastic model that explains the origin of such low frequency resonances. We further explore low frequency filtering effect with full wave finite element simulations. Our numerical results confirm the bending nature of fundamental resonances of the menhirs and further suggest additional resonances of rotational and longitudinal nature in the frequency range 25 to 50 Hz. Our study thus paves the way for large scale seismic metasurfaces consisting of granite stones periodically arranged atop a thin layer of regolith over a bedrock, for ground vibration mitigation in earthquake engineering., 6 pages, 7 figures

Abstract: There has been an increased demand for traceable calibrations at infrasonic frequencies in support of geophysical monitoring applications, an example being the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization, which provides global international coverage for a nuclear testing ban, and requires the International Monitoring System. In this paper, a new laser pistonphone design is presented with the objective of establishing primary standards for sound pressure at very low frequencies down to 10 mHz. The piston is a modified accessorized loudspeaker driver whose diameter is equal to the diameter of the front pistonphone cavity. The volume velocity of the piston is measured through a laser interferometer and the current version was designed to have an upper frequency limit of 20 Hz, to overlap with the closed coupler reciprocity method of calibration. Particular attention has been given to the sealing to avoid pressure leakage loss. The dimensions of the front cavity were designed to allow the calibration of a large variety of sensors, including microphones, barometers, manometers and microbarometers. Examples of calibrations for several sensors are presented and also an uncertainty budget for the Brüel & Kjær type 4160 laboratory standard microphones, commonly used for primary calibrations. Finally, the metrological performance of the laser pistonphone is demonstrated by comparing the calibration results with those obtained with alternative methods.

Abstract: International audience; A high precision can be achieved with ultrasonic coda waves to monitor the mechanical properties of concrete material (~10-5 in relative). This high sensitivity can be used to detect damage initiation and to closely follow concrete mechanical properties evolution with time. This advantage is counterbalance by the influence of environmental conditions making reproducibility of any experiment in concrete a challenging issue especially when in situ measurements are performed. Indeed thermal and water gradients present in the thickness of the structures (several decimetres) cannot be controlled and must be compensated. In this paper a protocol to remove environmental bias is proposed. Furthermore, to follow the apparition of a tensile crack in a metric size structure, non-linear mixing of coda wave via frequency-swept pump waves is tested. It is shown that, when the crack is closed (by pre-stressing cables), it is still possible to detect its presence. The non-linearity of the cracked zone remains at a high level, comparable to the case when the crack was open.

Abstract: Original acyclic (E)-α,α-dialkylketonitrones bearing a chiral auxiliary on their nitrogen atom were synthesized and successfully employed for the asymmetric synthesis of α,α-disubstituted amino acids using regio- and stereocontrolled 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reactions with vinyl ethers. N-Glycosyl chiral auxiliaries were found to provide excellent exo- and π-facial stereocontrol. The obtained enantiopure cycloadducts were selectively transformed into functional α,α-disubstituted amino acids and related β-peptides through the highly regioselective opening of an intermediate quaternary anhydride.

Abstract: International audience; Laboratory experiments using laser-based ultrasonic techniques can be used to simulate seismic surveys on highly controlled small-scale physical models of the subsurface. Most of the time, such models consist in assemblies of homogeneous and consolidated materials. To enable the physical modelling of unconsolidated, heterogeneous and porous media, the use of granular materials is suggested here. We describe a simple technique to build a two-layer physical model characterized by lateral variations, strong property contrasts and velocity gradients. We use this model to address the efficiency of an innovative surface-wave processing technique developed to retrieve 2-D structures from a limited number of receivers. A step by step inversion procedure of the extracted dispersion curves yields accurate results so that the 2-D structure of the physical model is satisfactorily reconstructed. The velocity gradients within each layer are accurately retrieved as well, confirming current theoretical and experimental studies regarding guided surface acoustic modes in unconsolidated granular media.

Abstract: This paper presents an ultrasonic method, based on the nonlinear acoustic mixing of coda waves with lower-frequency swept pump waves, for providing an efficient global detection of small cracks in cementitious materials. By simultaneously comparing, forboth uncracked and cracked mortars, the ultrasonic velocity variations and decorrelation coefficients between the unperturbed and perturbed signals with pump amplitude, this method makes it possible to accurately detect cracks with widths of around 20 μm in correlation with velocity variations of approximately 0.01%. The potential influence of certain material parameters such as microscopic damage is also discussed.

Abstract: Obstructive sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder with a high prevalence and often accompanied by significant snoring activity. To diagnose this condition, polysomnography is the standard method, where a neck microphone could be added to record tracheal sounds. These can then be used to study the characteristics of breathing, snoring or apnea. In addition cardiac sounds, also present in the acquired data, could be exploited to extract heart rate. The paper presents new algorithms for estimating heart rate from tracheal sounds, especially in very loud snoring environment. The advantage is that it is possible to reduce the number of diagnostic devices, especially for compact home applications. Three algorithms are proposed, based on optimal filtering and cross-correlation. They are tested firstly on one patient presenting significant pathology of apnea syndrome, with a recording of 509 min. Secondly, an extension to a database of 16 patients is proposed (16 hours of recording). When compared to a reference ECG signal, the final results obtained from tracheal sounds reach an accuracy of 81% to 98% and an RMS error from 1.3 to 4.2 bpm, according to the level of snoring and to the considered algorithm.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper, the study of the fully developed flow of a self-similar (fractal) power-law fluid is presented. The rheological way of behaving of the fluid is modeled utilizing the Ostwald–de Waele relationship (covering shear-thinning, Newtonian and shear-thickening fluids). A self-similar (fractal) fluid is depicted as a continuum in a noninteger dimensional space. Involving vector calculus for the instance of a noninteger dimensional space, we determine an analytical solution of the Cauchy equation for the instance of a non-Newtonian self-similar fluid flow in a cylindrical pipe. The plot of the velocity profile obtained shows that the rheological behavior of a non-Newtonian power-law fluid is essentially impacted by its self-similar structure. A self-similar shear thinning fluid and a self-similar Newtonian fluid take on a shear-thickening way of behaving, and a self-similar shearthickening fluid becomes more shear thickening. This approach has many useful applications in industry, for the investigation of blood flow and fractal fluid hydrology

Abstract: International audience; Overlapped speech occurs when multiple speakers are simultaneously active. This may lead to severe performance degradation in automatic speech processing systems such as speaker diarization. Overlapped speech detection (OSD) aims at detecting time segments in which several speakers are simultaneously active. Recent deep neural network architectures have shown impressive results in the close-talk scenario. However, performance tends to deteriorate in the context of distant speech. Microphone arrays are often considered under these conditions to record signals including spatial information. This paper investigates the use of the self-attention channel combinator (SACC) system as a feature extractor for OSD. This model is also extended in the complex space (cSACC) to improve the interpretability of the approach. Results show that distant OSD performance with self-attentive models gets closer to the nearfield condition. A detailed analysis of the cSACC combinationweights is also conducted showing that the self-attention module focuses attention on the speakers' direction.

Abstract: International audience; Understanding the precursors of granular avalanches is important for the prediction of critical events. As part of the dynamics leading to the avalanche, precursors are identified as collective motions of grains on the free surface. When a granular pile is tilted at a constant angular velocity, precursors appear quasi-periodically. In this paper we simultaneously caracterize precursors on the free surface with an optical method and in the bulk with acoustic methods (nonlinear and linear). Surprisingly, the use on nonlinear acoustic method is not necessary to probe rearrangements in the bulk of the granular material. A linear method can also be used provided that the frequency region is the one where the acoustic propagation is sensitive to the solid skeleton formed by the bead-contact network. Our experiments conducted with monodisperse glass beads show that their surface features are by far the most important for the precursor propreties. Our results allow to probe with a few millisecond time resolution (less than 10−2 degree of inclination) the relaxation phenomena associated to each precursor event. Interpretations of different precursors and different experiments provide an interesting train of thought for the understanding of destabilization mechanisms in granular systems.

Abstract: International audience; he stability of clay minerals is an important factor in assessing the durability of containment barriers for deep waste storage. In that context, the complete thermodynamic data set of three 2:1 ferro-magnesian clay minerals have been determined at 1 bar and from 2 to 520 K, using calorimetric methods. The studied clay samples were, respectively, the Na-saturated saponite Sap-Ca-1, Na-0.394 K0.021Ca0.038(Si3.569Al0.397Fe0.0343+)(Mg2.948Fe0.0212+Mn0.001)O-10(OH)(2), the Ca-saturated nontronite NAu-1, Ca0.247K0.020(Si3.458Al0.542)(Mg0.066Fe1.6883+Al0.268Ti0.007)O-10(OH)(2), and the Ca-saturated Santa Olalla vermiculite, Ca-0.445(Si2.778Al1.222)(Al0.192Mg2.468Fe0.2263+Fe0.0282+Ti0.018Mn0.007)O-10(OH)(2). The standard enthalpies of formation were obtained by solution-reaction calorimetry at 298.15 K. The heat capacities were measured between 2 and 520 K, using low-temperature adiabatic calorimetry, heat-pulse calorimetry, and differential scanning calorimetry. The standard entropies and the Gibbs free energies of formation at 298.15 K have been calculated from these values. Finally, the equilibrium constants at 298.15 K have been determined. A comparison between these experimental data and estimated values obtained from prediction models available in the literature enabled the most usual calculation methods available to date to be assessed for each thermodynamic property.

Abstract: International audience; In its original formulation by Forest & Sab (Math. Mech. Solids, 2017), stress gradient elastodynamics incorporate two inner-lengths to account for size effects in continuum theory. Here, an extended one-dimensional stress gradient model is developed by means of Lagrangian formalism, incorporating an additional inner-length and a fourth-order space derivative in the wave equation. Dispersive properties are characterised and hyperbolicity and stability are proven. Group velocity remains bounded in both original and extended models, proving causality is satisfied for both contrary to a usually-accepted postulate. By means of two-scale asymptotic homogeniza-tion, the high-order wave equation satisfied by the stress gradient model is shown to stand for an effective description of heterogeneous materials in the low-frequency range. An upscaling method is developed to identify the stress gradient material parameters and bulk forces on the parameters of elastic micro-structures. Application of the micro-macro procedure to periodic multi-laminates demonstrates the accuracy of the stress gradient continuum to account for the dispersive features of wave propagation. Frequency and time-domain simulations illustrate these properties.

Abstract: International audience; The nonlinear acoustic propagation is experimentally studied in a monoatomic and straight granular chain made with identical spherical beads. The interaction law between the beads is well described by the intrinsically nonlinear Hertz-Mindlin theory, leading to a nonlinear propagation of the acoustic waves. We focus here on the study of the nonlinear resonance phenomenon in a finite length granular chain. We observe dispersion in linear wave propagation associated to the periodicity of the medium, but also a dispersion of nonlinearity. Interpretations on the basis of the hysteretic contact behavior are provided for the latter phenomenon, and lead to the conclusion that under some conditions this type of medium exhibits a dominant nonlinearity of the hysteretic type.

Abstract: International audience; Stiffened structures are very common in engineering applications, for instance the wing of an airplane or the pressure hull of a submarine; both are subject to an excitation due to their movement in the fluid around, namely the Turbulent Boundary Layer (TBL) excitation. For improving the knowledge about the interaction between stiffened structures and TBL, this paper deals with the modelling of infinite periodically rib-stiffened plates excited by TBL. The mathematical formulation of the problem is well established in the literature. The originality of the present work relies on the use of a reciprocity technique for evaluating the response of the plate to convected harmonic pressure waves. The present approach allows then to compute the vibro-acoustic response of the plate due to the TBL from the response of the stiffened plate to a point mechanical force and to an acoustic monopole. Results in the physical space and the wavenumber space show the filter effect of the stiffened plate and the role of the supersonic domain on the far field radiation. They allow us to interpret the influence of the periodicity of the stiffeners on the vibration and the far-field noise for plates excited by TBL.

Abstract: 16 pages; International audience; The calcitic prisms of Pinna nobilis (Pinnidae, Linnaeus 1758) are shown to be perfect examples of a mesocrystalline material. Based on their ultrastructure and on the occurrence of an amorphous transient precursor during the early stages of prism formation, we provide evidence for the pathway of mesocrystallisation proposed by Seto et al. (2012), which proceeds not by self-organized oriented attachment of crystalline nano-bricks but by aggregation of initially amorphous nanogranules which later transform by epitaxial nucleation to a threedimensional array of well aligned nanocrystals. We further fathom the role of a liquid amorphous calcium carbonate in biomineralisation processes and provide strong evidence for the occurrence of PILP-like intermediates during prism formation. We develop a new scenario of prism formation based on the presented findings presented findings and discuss the implications of a speculative liquid amorphous calcium carbonate (LACC) intermediate in vivo.

Abstract: International audience; Insect ears are found on the thorax (in some Hemiptera), the abdomen (in grasshoppers, cicadas, some moths), or the front tibia (in crickets, katydids). Crista acustica -also named Siebold's organs- is the sensory organ linked to tympanum when located in forelegs. It is a collection of individually-tuned scolopidia -the most fundamental unit of mechanoreceptor organs in insects- that can discriminate frequencies. A remarkable geometrical property of the arrangement of the soma or cell body of hearing sensing cells -the inner hair cells in the cochlea of mammals and human beings and the scolopidia in the hearing organs of invertebrates- has not yet been explored. We will focus on the arrangement of the cells of the scolopidia of crista acustica in the fore tibia of certain Orthoptera (eg, grasshoppers, crickets, katydids). It consists of a collection of perfectly aligned sensory cells which forms a crest on top of a hollow tracheal tube behind the tympanum. Such a crest can interestingly be modeled as an inhomogenous granular chain linked to a substrate. We will show that the dynamical response in both time and frequency domains of this neurally tunable chain also strongly depends on its anatomical pre-arrangement.
