The article presents a case study of a 56-year-old Black woman with multiple pigmented lesions in her oral mucosa, ultimately diagnosed with Laugier–Hunziker syndrome (LHS). Topics discussed include the clinical presentation of LHS, differential diagnosis ruling out conditions like Addison disease and Peutz–Jeghers syndrome, and the management and follow-up of the patient's condition, which does not pose a risk of malignant transformation.

Laugier-Hunziker syndrome (LHS) is a sporadic, acquired, and infrequent condition characterized by the onset of brown macules on the lips, the oral mucosa, and the acral glabrous skin (mainly fingers and toes) in middle-aged patients. In several cases melanonychia of fingernails and toenails coexists. No other systemic involvement is observed. A case of LHS in a 50-year-old woman is described, with particular attention to dermoscopic features. No dermoscopic specific findings of mucosal/cutaneous maculae have been to date described in the literature. Accumulation of dermoscopic observations of pigmented lesions in LHS is needed and if found to be distinct, it may contribute to a more accurate diagnosis in the future

Abstract Laugier‐Hunziker syndrome is a rare and benign disorder characterized by hyperpigmentation of the lips and buccal mucosae with associated longitudinal melanonychia of nails. Clinical correlation is needed to rule out other pigmentary disorders.

Objective: To systematically integrate the available data published in the literature on oral pigmented lesions (OPL) associated with syndromes, summarizing the clinical and demographic features of the individuals. Materials and Methods: An electronic search was undertaken in six databases. Eligibility criteria were articles in English, Spanish, and Portuguese describing case reports or case series of OPL associated with syndromes. Data were aggregated and statistically evaluated. Results: About 108 articles reporting 149 cases of individuals with syndromes were identified. Among the affected individuals, nine syndromes were reported. The mean age at diagnosis was 35.93 years (0.41 to 83 years), with a predilection for white (n = 85/85.86%) female (n = 102/68.46%) individuals. As regards the number of lesions, 109 (73.15%) were multiple and 40 (26.85%) were single. Lip represented the anatomical location more affected (122 cases/38.01%), followed by the buccal mucosa (100 cases/31.15%). Brownish lesions accounted for 82 (69.49%) cases. The mean time of evolution was 10.52 years (0.16 to 56 years). OPL preceding diagnosis of the syndrome was observed in 111 (74.50%) cases. Conclusions: Although these syndromes are uncommon, dentists should be able to recognize their manifestations, since oral manifestations can represent an important aspect in early diagnosis. Introduction: Laugier-Hunziker syndrome is a rare acquired disorder characterized by diffuse hyperapigmentation of the oral mucosa and longitudinal melanonychia in adults. Laugier–Hunziker syndrome (LHS, also termed idiopathic lenticular mucocutaneous hyperpigmentation) is an unusual condition characterized by progressive pigmentation of the mucous membranes. LHS displays a benign course and is not associated with malignancy. Here we present a case of LHS with a 7-year follow-up. We document metachronous oral melanoacanthomas in this individual. In addition, we found that the oral melanotic macules in this patient waxed and waned in a cyclical manner. To our knowledge, this is the first report of these findings in the context of LHS. Finally, we provide an overview of other conditions that can present with mucosal hyperpigmentation. Introduction: The presence of a pigmented lesion of the oral mucosa raises numerous diagnostic hypotheses. The INCa (National Cancer Institute) considers "any pigmented lesion of the oral mucosa as a melanoma until proven otherwise." A histological confirmation is thus necessary. Clinical observation: A 64-year-old female patient consulted for a pigmented lesion of the marginal gingiva of 11 and 21, corresponding to a single round macule of approximately 0.5 cm diameter, brown, homogeneous, covered with a slight keratinization, with regular edges. The rest of the clinical examination was unremarkable. An excisional biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of essential melanosis or Laugier-Hunziker syndrome. Discussion: Pigmented lesions may occur in an isolated form or may be a component of major syndromes. Unique pigmentation of the oral mucosa can be of endogenous origin (e.g., malignant melanoma, essential melanosis, lentigo, different nevi) or of exogenous origin (e.g., ethnic pigmentations, metallic or medicinal origin, vascular lesions, and neuroectodermal tumor in children). Conclusion: Although rare at the gingival level, essential melanosis must be considered in the differential diagnosis of a single flat lesion. Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) is a rare, autosomal dominant condition characterised by mucocutaneous pigmented lesions, gastrointestinal polyposis and a significant risk of cancer. Laugier-Hunziker syndrome (LHS) is a benign condition with similar dermatological features, but with no systemic complications. STK 11 gene testing allows clinicians to differentiate between these two disorders. This case report compares the dermatological similarities in four individuals with PJS or LHS and illustrates the potential benefit of genetic testing. There is > 90% likelihood of identifying a mutation in STK 11 if a patient fulfils the diagnostic criteria for PJS. Lifelong risk management is advised for these individuals with confirmed PJS. Diagnostic confirmation is important to provide rational management, in particular, endoscopic cancer surveillance, and psychological support. STK 11 testing can confirm those at risk of PJS, who require lifelong surveillance, and possibly release those with a simple dermatosis, such as LHS, from invasive and thus potentially harmful surveillance. Laugier-hunziker syndrome (LHS) is a sporadic and acquired melanotic pigmentation of lips and oral mucosa which is not associated with gastrointestinal hamartomas in contrast to Peutz-Jeghers syndrome. Treatment using Q-switched neodymium: yttrium-aluminum-garnet (QS-ND:YAG) laser, Q-switched alexandrite laser and, cryotherapy have been reported. However, to the best of our knowledge, there is no report regarding long-term follow-up for recurrence. Herein we report the clinical features and the treatment of recurrent pigmented lesions in LHS patients. A patient diagnosed with LHS seven years ago presented with recurrent labial macules. She had undergone QS-ND:YAG laser 7 years ago and the labial macules have been gone several years. A physical examination revealed the macules were mainly on new locations and the spots on the site where the laser was previously done rarely recur. The untreated pigmented macules on gum were maintained in the same shape for seven years. Recurrent lesions of the lips and previously untreated macules on the gums were successfully treated again with the QS-ND:YAG laser as done in 7 years ago. Laugier-Hunziker-Baran syndrome is an aquired hypermelanosis of the oral mucosa, nails and other cutaneous sites of unknown etiology that affects middle aged individuals of all races. Up to date, less than 200 cases have been reported in the literature. So far, no association has been found between Laugier-Hunziker and genetic predisposition, malignancies, connective tissue and autoimmune disorders, even though these comorbidities have been mentionned in the literature over the years. We present the case of a 58 years old caucasian female diagnosed with Laugier-Hunziker, Sjogren syndrome and autoimmune thyroid disease, completed with a literature review. To our knowledge, this is the second case report regarding the association between Laugier-Hunziker and Sjogren syndrome presented in the literature and the first report regarding the association with autoimmune thyroid disease. The informations available so far do not conclude whether these are coincidental associations, therefore we reccomend screening patients with Laugier-Hunziker syndrome for autoimmune disorders in order to facilitate a better understanting of this relative recently described condition. Background Acne vulgaris is a common condition that occurs in all skin types. Postinflammatory hyperpigmentation ( PIH) is often associated with acne in patients of darker skin types, making it a common complaint in dermatology offices. Despite this, there is limited understanding of and effective treatment options for PIH. Objectives The study objective was to validate an in vivo model for PIH and to compare the clinical, histological and spectroscopic characteristics of artificially induced PIH and acne-induced PIH. Methods A nonblinded, nonrandomized pilot study was performed. Thirty subjects served as their own control in which four sites treated with 35% trichloroacetic acid ( TCA) solution and four truncal acne pustules were followed for 8 weeks and were evaluated clinically and histologically, and by colorimetry and spectroscopy. Results The initial phases of inflammation between TCA- and acne-induced PIH differ. However, clinical evaluations were similar on and after day 14. Acne- and TCA-induced lesions were clinically, histologically and spectroscopically indistinguishable at day 28. Conclusions Clinical, spectroscopic and histological similarities of acne-induced and TCA-induced PIH at day 28 suggest that TCA-induced PIH can be a reproducible model for the study of acne-induced PIH. Laugier-Hunziker syndrome is a rare acquired disorder characterized by macular hyperpigmentation of the oral and occasionally genital mucosa as well as longitudinal melanonychia. It is considered a benign condition without systemic manifestation or malignant potential. We report on a woman who concomitantly developed Laugier-Hunziker syndrome and a carcinoma of the pancreas.

The article presents a case study of a 19‑year‑old female with history of hyperpigmentation and longitudinal melanonychia who was diagnosed with Laugier-Hunziker syndrome after histopathological examination and x-rays.

The present report describes a case of Laugier-Hunziker syndrome (LHS), a rare benign condition. A patient with LHS develops acquired melanotic pigmentation of the lips and buccal mucosa, often with pigmentation of the nails occurring. No systemic symptoms are associated with this syndrome. Normally, no treatment is required for this condition, unless for aesthetic reason, mainly due to pigmentation on the lip mucosa. We present a case of LHS, 37-year-old female, whose pigmentations on her lip and in the oral cavity were treated with an Er:YAG laser. At the postoperative 12th month followup, the lesions recurred. Preeclampsia is a common hypertensive disorder of pregnancy, affecting 5-10% of pregnancies and contributing significantly to natural and periodontal morbidity and mortality. It has been recently studied that women were at higher risk for preeclampsia, if they had severe periodontal disease at delivery. Periodontal disease may provide a chronic burden of endotoxin and inflammatory cytokines, which serve to initiate and exacerbate atherogenesis and thrombogenesis. It is possible that the placenta may be similarly burdened in pregnant women who develop preeclampsia. Preeclampsia and periodontitis are both mutlifactorial diseases and obtaining a good oral hygiene measures can reduce the risk for periodontal disease there by also reducing the further risk for preeclampsia in the pregnant women. Laugier–Hunziker syndrome (LHS), a rare, acquired pigmentary disorder of the lips, oral mucosa, and fingers, is known to be an entirely benign disease with no systemic manifestations. In the past, the pigmentation has been treated efficiently in a few patients with the Q-switched neodymium: yttrium–aluminum–garnet (Nd:YAG) laser and the Q-switched alexandrite laser (QSAL). In order to evaluate the efficacy and safety of QSAL on Chinese patients of LHS, we treated 22 patients with QSAL in the past 5 years. Treatments were delivered on a bimonthly or trimonthly basis until the abnormal pigmentation totally disappeared. Patients were evaluated at each visit for evidence of dyspigmentation, scarring, or other untoward effects from the laser treatment. Our 22 subjects consisted of 18 females and 4 males with a mean age of 42.4 years. After only one session of laser treatment, the clearing on the lips was as follow: 18 (81.8%) excellent, 2 (9.1%) good, 1 (4.5%) fair and 1 (4.5%) poor. Eighteen patients (81.8%) with LHS, who had achieved excellent clearing after only one session of laser treatment, did not receive further treatment. Among the left four patients, three patients (13.6%) achieved complete results after three laser treatments. Only one patient required six sessions to achieve complete clearance. No scarring was noted after any of the treatments. The appearance of pigmentation on mucous membranes in a middle-aged patient without a significant family history for skin disorders should prompt consideration for the possible diagnosis of LHS.
