Hermann's tortoise (Testudo hermanni) is listed as "Near threatened" in the IUCN Red list of endangered species. The importance of protecting the Hermann's tortoise populations and its habitats have led to the inclusion of the species within CITES Convention (Annex II), Annex A of EU Wildlife Trade Regulation, Annex II of the Bern Convention and Annexes II and IV of the EU Habitats Directive. To assess the distribution and status of the eastern Hermann's tortoise (Testudo hermanni boettgeri) in Croatia, historical and recent records were gathered and analyzed. The species was recorded in all three biogeographical regions in the country, but it's native to the Mediterranean and a small part of the Alpine region. With the increase of recent surveys and the use of citizen science platforms, the known range of the species in Croatia was increased by 35.8% and is now encompassing 123 10 × 10 km EEA reference grid cells. Most records (66%) originate from lower elevations (up to 199 m), and the highest was recorded at 570 m. Sparse forests are the most preferred habitats, followed by semi-open habitats, such as grasslands and shrubs. The most serious threat to the species is natural succession due to the increased abandonment of traditional farming and grazing. Other threats include touristic infrastructure and urban development, transportation, illegal collecting, and invasive species. The Area of Occupancy calculated using 2 × 2 km grids resulted in an AOO of 1,372.00 km2, while Extent of Occurrence (EOO) is calculated to be 18,145.07 km2. The current network of National protected areas includes 14% of the species' AOO while the designated Natura 2000 areas include 29.30% of its AOO. We propose to designate an additional 10 Natura 2000 areas to help with the long-term protection of the species.

New records of Hyles vespertilio (Esper, 1780) are reported from Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia. In Croatia, a single specimen was recorded on Mt. Biokovo, within the Biokovo Nature Park, southern Croatia. This is the first record in the country in 44 years. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, the species was recorded at 11 localities within or in the near surroundings of the Blidinje Nature Park. This species is new to the fauna of Bosnia and Herzegovina and is the 20th Sphingidae species recorded in the country. In Serbia, the species was recorded in Krajinoviće, Mt. Giljeva. This is the third known record and the first observation for this country in 32 years. The preferred host plant, Epilobium dodonaei, is present at all the studied localities in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, but the caterpillars were not surveyed during this work. This paper gives the first record of Capnodis porosa for Croatia. It was found in the extreme south-east of the country.

Wetlands provide many important ecosystem services, e.g. serving as natural retention areas to prevent flooding and they can be recreational areas for the general public. They also represent vital habitats for many animal species and many are protected nature areas. In spite of this, the fauna of many wetlands in Croatia is still mostly unknown, especially when it comes to beetles. Not knowing the fauna of a particular habitat hinders management efforts. One such location is Turopoljski Lug forest, south-east from the capital Zagreb. The fieldwork was done from March till September 2017, utilising four methods: sweep netting, baited traps on tree trunks, light trapping with UV light traps at night, and collecting by hand. Additionally, several records from earlier visits are included. The total number of currently known species for the forest is raised from 51 to 133. A total of nine species are near threatened (NT), seven of which are saproxylic. Three species listed in Annexes II and IV of the Habitats Directive occur in the area, of which only Cerambyx cerdo had been recorded. Additionally, a neglected literature record of a fourth, Phryganophilus ruficollis, has been discovered. Current management practices for the forest should be re-evaluated and modified if necessary. Future research targeting specific beetle groups should yield further increases in the number of species known for the area, while a targeted mapping of the distribution of species listed on the Annexes should yield much- needed conservation information.

Stag beetles (Coleoptera, Lucanidae) are saproxylic beetles with an important role within forest ecosystems. Despite the fact that some of these species are listed on Annexes of the Habitats Directive and are evaluated in the European Red List of Saproxylic Beetles, this family is poorly researched in Croatia. The aim of this study was to make a list of stag beetle species of Croatia with their distribution presented on maps, so more research can be focused on gaps in knowledge in the future. Available literature was checked and records from Association Hyla’s recent entomological surveys were assembled. Altogether, a list of seven species of Lucanidae from Croatia is given and displayed on maps: Aesalus scarabaeoides, Ceruchus chrysomelinus, Sinodendron cylindricum, Dorcus parallelipipedus, Lucanus cervus, Platycerus caprea, P. caraboides.

The beetle fauna of Croatia is diverse, but poorly studied. The longhorn beetles are among the few families for which there exists a checklist, albeit almost 50 years old. Since then, there have been many changes in taxonomy and several previously neglected/alien species have been found for the country. Henceforth an update is needed. To do this, a review of all available literature was performed, several private and institutional entomological collections were checked, and new records were collected in the field. All collected data was pooled into a database, taxon names were updated and from this an updated preliminary checklist was created. The list was compared with the Catalogue of Palearctic Coleoptera, and with the published checklists for neighbouring countries. Several species were recorded for the first time for Croatia, and the presence of some species was reaffirmed for the country. Through recent research many species were photographed. These will be used in the creation of a digital, publicly available repository, with distribution maps – a basis for the future Atlas and red listing of Croatian Cerambycidae.

The pond slider Trachemy scripta was one of the most commonly exported turtles until the last decade and often released into the wild outside its native range. It was introduced to Europe, Africa, South America and Asia and included on the EU list of 100 World's Worst Invasive Alien Species and the List of invasive alien species of Union concern. The import of the subspecies Trachemys scripta elegans into Europe and Croatia has been banned for some time, but the number of specimens recorded in nature is still increasing. In this paper we present 45 new localities were the species was observed in Croatia, which makes a total of 84 known localities. Most of the records, 58%, are in the Continental biogeographical region and the rest in the Mediterranean. It has not yet been recorded for the Alpine biogeographical region. Most records (42%) come from ponds. Three new sightings of females digging nests, laying eggs and sightings of hatchlings were recorded, suggesting successful reproduction of the species. Further surveys of this alien species in Croatia are needed.

The discovery of the previously unknown entomological collection of the academician Vanda Kochansky-Devidé is presented. The specimens were collected in the beginning of the 20 th century across Croatia and Slovenia, when she was only 10-14 years of age. The collection contains 341 specimens belonging to 174 species. 191 specimens belong to butterflies (Rhopalocera), while 150 belong to moths (Heterocera). Probably the most notable specimens are that of Parnassius apollo (Linnaeus, 1758) from Slovenia. Several species collected within Zagreb are nowadays very local and rare, and no longer occur within the city itself.

A significant part of the forest ecosystem entomological biodiversity belongs to the click beetles (Coleoptera, Elateridae). Some of them are present on several lists of saproxylic species of great conservation value, such as the primeval forest relict species list, the Urwald relict species list, even the Annexes of the Habitats Directive. The aim of this study was to determine which saproxylic click beetle species are present in Croatia, what is their currently known distribution and which of them have a higher rank according to the European Red List of saproxylic beetles. A list of 49 species was made using literature as well as the records from Association Hyla’s recent entomological surveys. Thirty of these species are categorized as least concern (LC), three as data deficient (DD), 12 as near threatened (NT), one as vulnerable (VU) and three as endangered (EN). More research is necessary in the future to evaluate these species’ national status in Croatia.

Hrvatsko Zagorje is a region located in the north‐eastern part of Croatia just north from the capital Zagreb. Due to its vicinity to Zagreb, where many lepidopterists were working, a rather low number of historical records is very surprising. The first comprehensive butterfly survey started in 2008. Until today a total of 112 butterfly species have been recorded, with an additional six species known from the literature. This adds up to 118 species or 60% the Croatian butterfly fauna. The highest butterfly diversity was registered in the mountains Ivanščica and Strahinjščica, as well as in the significant landscape Zelenjak–Risvica and Cesar Hill. Several rare and endangered species were recorded in the region, i.e. Zerynthia polyxena, Parnassius mnemosyne, Phengaris arion, P. alcon, P. teleius, Polyommatus thersites, Lycaena dispar and Lopinga achine. Most of the butterflies in the region are grassland specialists, which are in rapid decline due to the abandonment or intensification of meadows, spreading of the invasive alien plant species, and urbanisation of wetland areas or changes in land use. To preserve the key species of butterflies in the area extensive maintenance of mainly dry and wet meadows and flowering forest edges is needed.

Saproksilni kornjaši predstavljaju kukce usko vezane uz mrtvo drvo. Neodrživo gospodarenje šumama doprinijelo je sve većoj ugroženosti saproksilnih kornjaša te se zbog toga nalaze na crvenim popisima ugroženih vrsta. Republika Hrvatska označena je kao područje s velikim brojem ugroženih vrsta od kojih su najčešće iz porodica strizibuba (Cerambycidae), klišnjaka (Elateridae) i jelenaka (Lucanidae). Cilj ovog rada je utvrditi brojnost i raznolikost saproksilnih kornjaša unutar različitih šumskih zajednica Kopačkog rita te pružiti osvrt na ugrožene vrste. Utvrdit će se učinkovitost različitih metoda uzorkovanja koje se koriste za praćenje saproksilnih kornjaša: metoda prekinutog leta (dizajn pleksiglas i mreža), metoda lovnih klopki i metoda zračne klopke s atraktantom. Terensko istraživanje bilo je provedeno od travnja do kolovoza 2014. godine, a ukupno je postavljeno 918 klopki tijekom istraživanja. Uzorkovano je 1088 jedinki i 64 vrste iz 14 porodica saproksilnih kornjaša. Najbrojnije porodice bile su Cerambycidae, Cetoniidae i Lucanide te vrste Cetonia aurata, Dorcus parallelipipedus i Valgus hemipterus. Najbrojnija i najraznolikija fauna saproksilnih kornjaša bila je u šumi hrasta lužnjaka. Od ukupnog broja na europskoj crvenoj listi se nalazi 20 vrsta, od čega su tri vrste gotovo ugrožene (Cucujus cinnaberinus, Gnorimus variabilis i Lucanus cervus) dok su tri nedovoljno poznate od kojih je zadnja i ugrožena vrsta (Protaetia affinis, Omoglymmius germari, Rhysodes sulcatus). Najučinkovitija metoda uzorkovanja saproksilnih kornjaša bila je metoda prekinutog leta.

The species Cacyreus marshalli was introduced into Europe from South Africa in 1978. In Croatia its presence was noted for the first time in 2009 in Mali Lošinj. Previous research has recorded this species at around 20 localities. The present paper gives new records of the species Geranium Bronze from 28 localities in the Mediterranean part of Croatia with some data regarding its ecology and ethology. The known margin of the distribution area of C. marsahalli in Croatia has expanded by around 50 kilometres to the south-east to the islands Korčula and Lastovo and in inland to the Pelješac peninsula. The Geranium Bronze has not been recorded in the continental and central mountain part of Croatia, but was for the first time recorded on Mt. Učka, on 934 meters a.s.l.

Čagalj (Canis aurues) je pripadnik porodice pasa (Canidae) kojeg karakterizira oportunizam i život u čoporu. U Hrvatskoj je zabilježen još u 15. st te se ubraja u autohtone vrste. U većem broju je poznat na jugoistoku Hrvatske i u sjevernoj Dalmaciji, dok je tijekom posljednjeg desetljeća uočen trend povećanja populacije u kontinetalnoj Hrvatskoj i širenje na sjever, kao i u ostalim zemljama Europe. Pritisak lovaca zbog negativnog stava prema čaglju često rezultira prekomjernim odstrelom te je nužno pratiti populaciju kako se ne bi ugrozio dugoročni opstanak vrste. Cilj našeg istraživanja bio je istražiti potencijalnu rasprostranjenost čaglja u Hrvatskoj. Na temelju podataka iz središnje lovne evidencije Ministarstva poljoprivrede o smrtnosti čaglja u razdoblju od 2007. do 2010. godine definirali smo područja Hrvatske s teritorijalnim čoporima i povremenom prisutnosti. Istraživanje je pokazalo da je čagalj teritorijalan na 3477, 97 km² (6, 3% kopnene Hrvatske) a na 6549, 72 km² (11, 88%) su zabilježeni pojedinačni primjerci bez dokaza o teritorijalnosti jedinki. Prisutnost čaglja je potvr ena na području mediteranske i kontinentalne biogeografske regije dok u području alpinske regije u potpunosti izostaje. Pomoću Maxent prediktivnog modela napravljena je karta potencijalne rasprostranjenosti na temelju klimatskih varijabli, stanišnih tipova (NKS) i visinske raspodjele kao najznačajnijih čimbenika rasprostranjenosti čaglja u Hrvatskoj. Model je pokazao da je više od 50% kopnenog područja Hrvatske pogodno za život čaglja i njegovo rasprostranjivanje.

During the last 50 years significant fluctuations in golden jackal (Canis aureus) population size and distribution was noted in Eastern and Central Europe. First records of jackals in Croatia date from 15th century, but scientific data about their distribution was not systematically collected. In order to determine the current state and provide bases for further distribution monitoring, we analyzed data about jackal hunting management in Croatia from 2007 until 2010. Yearly reports from all hunting units were provided by Hunting Department, Ministry of Regional Development, Forestry and Water Management. They were used to create maps of areas where jackals were recorded and hunted. Jackals were recorded in 297 (27.9%) and shot in 165 (15.5%) hunting units. Based on the analyzed data we estimate that jackals in Croatia are present on at least 17 300 km2 (31% of total hunting area, national parks not included). In total 70% of all jackals were shot in Mediterranean region (Pelješac Penninsula, Ravni kotari, Dalmatinska zagora), indicating that area has the largest jackal population density. In the continental, north-east part of Croatia we recorded 25% of shot jackals, while other hunting areas with records of hunting were dispersed and indicated low jackal densities. Increase in number of shot animals per year from 2007 (132) till 2010 (790), can be interpreted as a sign of population growth. Grey wolf (Canis lupus) and jackal distribution in Croatia significantly overlap in Dalmatinska Zagora and Ravni kotari region, while in the core areas of wolf distribution (Gorski kotar and Lika) jackals were not hunted.

Rad donosi primjere varijacije u obojanosti melanističkih formi za bjeloušku (Natrix natrix) i Eskulapovu zmiju (Zamenis longissimus).

U radu su dana opažanja parenja zmije Zamenis longissimus te guštera Podarcis siculus, P. melisellensis i P. muralis, u Hrvatskoj.

Golden jackal (Canis aureus) is a medium sized carnivore, adoptable to wide range of habitats. The species inhabits East Africa, Southeast Europe, Middle East and South Asia. Opportunistic lifestyle enables jackals to quickly adapt to new habitats and spread their range, so during the last 50 years significant fluctuations in jackal population size and distribution was noted in Eastern and Central Europe. First records of jackals in Croatia date from 15th century, but scientific data about their distribution was not systematically collected. Based on data about hunting management jackals today inhabit about 30% of Croatian territory. In order to determine the current state and evaluate most significant factors that influance jackal distribution in Croatia, we analyzed data about jackal hunting management in Croatia from 2007 until 2010. Yearly reports from all hunting units were provided by Hunting Department, Ministry of Regional Development, Forestry and Water Management. They were used to create maps of areas where jackals were recorded and hunted. Maps of distribution enabled observation of potential factors that impact presence of jackals. Areas with the largest jackal population density are in the Mediterranean region - Pelješac Penninsula, Ravni kotari and Dalmatinska zagora. In the continental, north-east parts of Croatia jackals are dispersed and present in lower densities, while population was not recorded in the Alpine region. We also noticed correlation between jackal population density and availability of fresh water in Mediterranean region as well as minefield distribution in continental part of Croatia. Grey wolf (Canis lupus) and jackal distribution in Croatia significantly overlap in Dalmatinska Zagora and Ravni kotari region, while in the core areas of wolf distribution (Gorski kotar and Lika) jackals were not hunted.

Posljednjih 50 godina primijećene su značajne promjene u distribuciji i brojnosti populacije čaglja (Canis aureus) u istočnoj i centralnoj Europi. Prvi podaci o čagljevima u Hrvatskoj sežu iz 15. stoljeća, no nije bilo sistematskog prikupljanja znanstvenih podataka o njihovoj rasprostranjenosti. Kako bismo utvrdili sadašnje stanje i pripremili temelj za daljni monitoring distribucije čagljeva, analizirali smo podatke lovnog gospodarenja čagljem u Republici Hrvatskoj tijekom 2009. godine. Godišnji izvještaji svih lovišta, pohranjeni u Središnjoj lovnoj evidenciji, ustupljeni su od strane Uprave za lovstvo Ministarstva regionalnog razvoja, šumarstva i vodnog gospodarstva. Podaci o odstrjelu i otpadu, te o procijenjenom prirastu i proljetnom brojnom stanju korišteni su za izradu karte područja gdje je zabilježena prisutnost čagljeva u RH. Čagljevi su zabilježeni u 212 (19, 8 %), i odstrijeljeni u 86 lovišta (8%). Temeljem analiziranih podataka možemo zaključujemo da su čagljevi u Hrvatskoj prisutni na najmanje 17 300 km2 (31% ukupnog lovnog područja, nacionalni parkovi nisu uključeni). Ukupno 78, 8 % svih čagljeva je bilo odstrijeljeno na području mediteranske regije, što ukazuje da je to područje s najvećom gustoćom populacije čagljeva u Hrvatskoj. U kontinentalnom, sjeveroistočnom i istočnom dijelu Hrvatske zabilježeno je 19, 6% odstrela, dok su ostala lovišta s zabilježenim odstrelom čaglja raspršena i ukazuju na nisku gustoću populacije. Na tri hrvatska otoka - Pagu, Korčuli i Šipanu, postoje podaci o odstrelu, dok je na otocima Rabu, Viru, Braču, Cresu i Lastovu zabilježena prisutnost. Karta područja rasprostranjenosti čagljeva i podaci o odstrjelu potvrđuje dosadašnje spoznaje da čagljevi preferiraju makiju u mediteranskoj regiji, te vlažne nizine u kontinentalnoj regiji.
