The Latin American population in Spain has grown significantly in recent years. Spain, traditionally a country of emigration, has experienced large-scale emigration in recent years. Spain is particularly important in that it has become the main destination of Latin American emigration in recent years. Although Latin American migration is not a new phenomenon in Spain. Finally, since the beginning of the 21st century, Spain has witnessed further diversification of immigrant flows from Latin America by country of origin, with rapid growth in Bolivian, Venezuelan and Argentinean populations. The Latin American population has become one of the most important migration flows in Spain at the beginning of the 21st century. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

6. Migration Flows, Communities, Cultural Practices and Gender: A Literature Review of Latin American Migration to Australia.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics shows that between 2000 and 2019 Latin American migration to Australia increased by 262%. This percentage does not consider migrants on temporary visas. This article presents a critical review of 59 single publications. The findings suggest, firstly, that while the literature shows qualitative analysis of Latin American cultural practices, communities and gender, the study of migration flows is dominated by quantitative approaches that are focused mainly on permanent settlement. Secondly, while there have been several studies attempting to understand and problematize a homogenous Latin American identity in Australia, there is still little research exploring the heterogeneous cultural, social and economic experiences of migrants from these diverse regions. Finally, this review highlights the need to conduct quantitative and qualitative studies to explore Latin American temporary migration in Australia, examining how the increase of temporary visas is intersecting with the everyday life of these migrants. In the following article I seek to investigate a hitherto forgotten but emerging aspect of Latin American critical and cultural studies, namely, the migration and diaspora of transgender youth and transvestites from the Southern Cone to the United States for artistic, creative and humanitarian purposes. I say forgotten inasmuch as the sensitivities experienced by the trans prefix were, in the beginning, discarded from the queer or sexual dissidence theories; and I point to it as emerging insofar as the new critical perspectives promoted by emerging researchers have set their sights on such bodies and subjects as true epistemes of contemporary cultural endeavor. The thesis states that transgender sensitivities are fundamental to understand the relationship between the national post-dictatorial period and the cultural productions of the 1990s. The works that artists and writers such as Germán Bobe, Iván Monalisa Ojeda and Francisco Copello carried out during those years allowed us to understand an entire Chilean and Latin American scene of young creators who fought dictatorships and canons with their bodies always accompanied by the sign of sexual dissidence

This article explores one nation-one language ideology, which holds that a language is the glue and marker of an identity that fosters national unity and linguistic assimilation ideologies in the context of Latin-American migration to the United Kingdom. From ethnographic and sociocognitive approaches within critical discourse studies, the linguistic experiences of two Latin American immigrant mothers seeking health services and legal advice are analyzed. The study of their linguistic experiences sheds light on the social and political effects that language ideologies have by bringing about such consequences as physical aggression and family separation in underexplored institutions articulated by neoliberal policies. In this context, a nationalist ideology emerges that constructs borders and marginal social identities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This ethnographic study draws from my research on the three main care practices Latin American domestic workers experience in Barcelona: caring as part of their jobs, caring for their families from afar, and caring for each other. Stemming from grounded theory, I will argue that one of the main pressures they suffer daily is social isolation and loneliness. Starting from a brief analysis of how migrant domestic workers bear the burden of care individually – firstly, as part of their jobs and, secondly, as part of their gender duty when being mothers from afar – this paper will trace a third dimension of care seen in collective practices to cope with social isolation. The last section of the empirical overview will focus on the daily navigation of the concepts of self-care, activism, and feminism by Latin American domestic workers. These concepts were encountered in fieldwork by my research participants and given a new meaning when developing their own versions of them based on collective values more present in their home cultures. This research aims to show the role the Chilean State has played in the production of the administrative irregularity of migrants based on restrictive access policies into the territory. From secondary information, the effect that the imposition of the consular visa requirement has had on the increase in undocumented access is analyzed. The analysis is based on a characterization of the immigration policy developed by the Chilean State between 1992 and 2018. It draws on the theory of recognition and the notion of migratory trajectory. It is concluded that restrictive immigration policy instruments, under favorable context for migratory flows, impact the creation of conditions for institutionalizing precarious conditions for migrants' trajectories. This essay outlines an approach to teaching U.S. immigration policy and Latino immigration to undergraduate students in a systemic and critical manner. The course is designed to build students' knowledge on the topic through four areas of knowledge encompassing the history of U.S. intervention in the Americas, the economics of migration, state regulatory practices and the legal production of immigrant criminality, and immigrant rights. A focus on social justice leads students to learn not only the social relations of inequality at the heart of Latino immigration but also about the harms inflicted on a vulnerable population. Students' comprehension of the human suffering through the study of specific cases helps them empathize and develop an understanding of the human and civil rights of migrants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SOCIAL mobility ,SOCIAL reproduction ,IMMIGRANTS ,FAMILIES ,SOCIAL structure - Abstract
The aim of this article is to study the transnational social mobility strategies, focusing on the interaction between reproductive and productive strategies, of Latin American migrant households in Spain. We have created an analysis model based on the assessment of the differentiated strategic investments of transnational families in terms of four types of resources: physical and financial; educational; social and emotional. Our intention is to trace variations in strategic behaviour in accordance with the migrants’ family generation (grandparents, parents, children,) their migratory position (pioneering or regrouped migrants, family members remaining in the country of origin, etc.) and their family situation. A longitudinal approach has been adopted, in order to analyse the changes in social and spatial mobility strategies throughout the course of the migratory process, using biographical narratives and multi-situated fieldwork carried out in Spain with Latin American immigrants (Brazilians and Ecuadorians), as well as in certain countries of origin (Ecuador). ABSTRACT This article seeks to analyze the role that the assets derived from the participation of the migrant population of Brazilian origin in social networks play in the definition of their social mobility strategies. To this end, this investigation addresses the effect of the composition and nature of transnational networks – in which transnational families participate in a migration process that has Spain as the main destination – on their position in the social hierarchy. Based on a qualitative methodology built through the application of a multi-localized ethnography with Galicia and Catalonia as recipient contexts, fieldwork was carried out with several transnational households originating in Brazil, interviewing different members of the domestic group from 2011 to 2018. The main results show the importance of transnational networks within the scope of spatial and social mobility projects for the migrant population. The object of this paper is to present firstly the migratory and social mobility aspirations initially harboured by Latin American women when they arrived in Spain, taking account of differences of individual character and family backgrounds. In second place it asks what strategies and action choices they have followed to realise these aspirations. It looks chiefly at occupational strategies while referring also to residential and relational strategies and strategies regarding saving, consumption, leisure and free time. Finally, it analyses the social mobility achieved by women immigrants, differentiating between upward mobility, downward mobility and social stasis. The idea is to compare essentially individual plans, strategies and achievements with ones that were family-oriented, highlighting the distinct features differentiating transnational from reunited families.

This article aims to analyse the effects of international migration on family reorganization, gender relations and the situation of the children of migrants in Ecuador. The first part describes the background against which migration and family transformations take place. It shows the impact of various different source contexts on families by comparing different parts of the country to achieve contrasting views of urban and rural environments, old migration and more recent migration, and different socio-economic levels. In addition, this is placed in relation to different destinations: southern Europe and the United States. A second part analyses the different arrangements for family stewardship depending on who has migrated and how this relates to certain gender assumptions and relations. A third section deals with the perceptions of migration that are built up by the youngsters who are left behind.

The growth in migrant flows from Latin America to Spain over the last decade has altered the immigrant landscape in the Iberian Peninsula, in terms at once of the origin of migrant populations and their demographic or social characteristics, and of their patterns of spatial distribution. That is the issue that the present article proposes to address, based on an analysis of the available information on the spatial distribution of Andean immigrants and the latest statistical data. There are two questions underpinning this survey: what is the relationship between the location of Andean immigrants and that of other, longer-standing groups about whose geography we know more? Can we map the spatial patterns that form due to the existence of migratory pathways, which we know are important for migrating societies? On a Spanish national scale, the authors have sketched out a map of areas where Andean immigrants have settled, examining whether or not these receiving areas coincide with earlier, more traditional waves of immigration and attempting to differentiate their regional distribution with reference to the immigrants’ areas of origin. On a regional scale we examine patterns of rural/periurban/urban settlement of immigrants in relation to the dimensions of the labour market and existing immigrant pathways.

While one of the distinguishing features of the Latin American population is its diversity, the process of «civic stratification» in formal and informal immigrant access to economic, political and social rights is rendered deeper and more complex by migratory policies. These regulations affect opportunities for migrants and shape their life experiences, restricting or denying access not only to the labour market, social benefits and family life but also to political rights. This article reviews Spanish migratory policy, with particular attention to family reunification and the regulations affecting Latin American migrations. It then goes on to analyse the weight of migratory policy as an instrument of stratification of rights, exploring the diversity of legal statuses of the various different immigrant groups and the effect of family immigration policies. Finally, it summarises some of the variables that affect the process of stratification of the Latin American immigrant population and sets out some thoughts on the concepts of ethnic affinity and the colonial nature of power.

Latin Americans have constituted the main contingent in the burgeoning of immigration to Spain since 2000. Encouraged during the second Partido Popular government (2000-2004) and driven by economic crisis in the cases of Ecuador and Argentina, Spain offered them an attractive destination where sustained economic growth gave them the chance to find work. Although one of the more recent immigrant waves, they have found integration in the labour market easier than other foreign groups. For example the fact that they speak Spanish has made it easier for them to find work in the services sector, and in some cases even in public employment. They are likewise a strong presence in the General Social Security Scheme and the Special Scheme for Domestic Employees. This last segment is especially important as a means of entry to the labour market, but there is also a high rate of transfer to the General Scheme, which clearly offers an improvement in working conditions.

Agricultural migrant workers, recruited to work in Canada under the Temporary Foreign Workers Program (TFWP), are disciplined to be compliant and productive. Based on ethnographic data, we draw attention to several ways in which Spanish-speaking migrants, employed in agriculture in a rural community in Southwestern Ontario, respond to this disciplinary power. Most migrants discipline themselves and others to be productive and compliant workers. We refer to these acts as "performances of self-discipline." At other times, some (albeit, few) migrants challenge this disciplinary power either individually or collectively. We refer to these performances of subjectivity as "performances of defiance." Another way migrants may respond to the disciplinary power is by attempting to escape from it. Coining these performances "performances of escape," we discuss how some agricultural migrant workers drop out of the program and remain in Canada without authorization. By turning attention to these performances of subjectivity, the article fills a gap in the literature on migration management and its disciplinary practices in Canada. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The United States is no stranger to asylum seekers and refugees. The most famous seaport in the country houses a 305-foot-tall statue of a woman bearing a torch with words from the poem The New Colossus by Emma Lazarus etched at her feet: “‘Give me your tired, your poor, /Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.’”[1] The Statue of Liberty is a symbolic representation of open arms to immigrants from all walks of life. But if everyone is welcome, why do so few actually gain entrance? US interventionism policies in the 20th century have defined the lives of millions of Latin American citizens and created or contributed to deteriorating political, social, and economic conditions. These, along with the threat of violence from persecutory groups, is a common cause of forced migration. Due to its geographic position and relative stability, the United States offers an appealing location for many individuals who must flee their homes. However, entry into the United States as a migrant is not an easy task. Many who reach the southern border apply for asylum to escape persecution, only to discover that not all violence is protected and the process itself takes time with no guaranteed result. The process of asylum in the United States is a complicated and extensive procedure riddled with injustice, frequently failing to protect the most vulnerable. By studying the history and trends of asylum policies in the United States we hope to learn more about the system in place in our country and how years of policy changes have impacted one of the largest groups of asylum seekers and refugees. Furthermore, by contrasting these trends against comparable countries, we can evaluate their balance and identify potential areas for change. [1] "The New Colossus." National Parks Service. Mass-media discourse is a “mirror” of sorts, which reflects general opinions and allows for understanding society’s mindset concerning migration issues. This article is devoted to analyzing the images created by Spanish mass-media regarding Latin American immigrants residing in Spain. Such a vision ultimately led to the emergence of an enduring perception of said immigrants by Spanish society from two main points of view – fear and pity. Columbians and Ecuadorians served as the prototypes for all Latin Americans who illegally entered Spain. The author reveals the reasons for the “divide” in Spanish mass-media’s perception of Columbia and Columbians, who became synonymous with danger, as well as Ecuador and Ecuadorian immigrants, who are primarily associated with 10, 2019 compassion and pity. This article examines the main stages of Latin American migration to Spain at the end of the 20th century and at the beginning of the 21st century, which were primarily comprised in succession by immigrants from Columbia, Argentina, Venezuela and Cuba. The author characterizes the most numerous of Spain’s Latin American Diasporas. It is revealed that immigration is a collectively constructed social phenomenon. In turn the host society attributes certain characteristics to visitors (“others”) which they in fact do not possess. Such artificially assigned qualities are the result of a so-called “symbolic structure”, attributed to each “imaginary migrant”. Latin American migration to Spain is a result of a multitude of factors lying on various levels. However, it is very uncommon for the news to carefully examine the regional and global aspects of this process. This article reveals the specific image of Latin American migrants which developed in Spain towards the beginning of the 21st century. The author attempts to define the hidden ideology supporting the vast majority of those negative Latin American migrant stereotypes broadcast by national mass-media.

The paper provides a qualitative exploration of the impact of family migration policies on Latin American migrants in Italy. As the data collected reveals, the right to family life is differently accessed and regulated along lines of nationality/ethnicity, gender and class, reflected in more or less rigidly constrained formal and informal reunification pathways, which differently affect gender, intergenerational and care relationships in the family. While Italy, compared to other European countries, still regulates the matter in a relatively generous way, the increasing restrictions, matched with widespread informality in labour and housing markets, make access to this fundamental human right highly uneven and stratified. In order to explain non-citizen enfranchisement in Latin America, this article takes into account three dimensions: domestic (citizenship tradition, immigration levels, internal politics), global (international and bilateral agreements, human rights discourse) and regional (common markets, diffusion, geopolitics). The article identifies two main modalities: from the early twentieth century to the 1980s, when democracy was not a necessary condition and when national factors prevailed. Starting in the 1990s, democratization in Latin America has brought a new wave of non-citizen enfranchisement, this time with more influence of global and regional factors and, in various cases, in connection with external voting rights. - Abstract
The Protection System for Children and Adolescents in Spain has the same mechanisms for the national population as it does for the foreign population of children and Young people who are originally from Latin American. This research aimed to determine the specific emancipation difficulties of youths from Latin America with a Child Protective Service record, as well as to identify effective strategies for socio-educational actions. Using a qualitative methodology within the grounded theory framework, six longitudinal monitoring studies and four life story narrations are conducted with protected young people. The study concluded with two discussion groups with specialized professional figures. The results reveal deficits in educational accompaniment, especially as a result of the collision between migratory project goals and the rigidity of the education system. This study analyses the results of a research project on gay-identified men of Latin American origin who have migrated to Sydney, Australia. The findings are the product of a year of collection and analysis of data from surveys and in-depth interviews carried out with those who answered the initial call for participation at the beginning of 2010, published in the gay and lesbian press in as well as Spanish-speaking periodicals in Sydney. The theoretical bases of the project find their inspiration in the newly emergent framework of so-called sexual migration studies and the work of sexual fields theory. The conclusions show the importance of ethnic and racial images in Latin American migrant interaction in gay spaces and the value that the study’s participants gave to multiculturalism in their experiences of new socio-sexual sites and identity constructions post-migration. - Abstract
Multiple factors explain the legitimacy of the emphasis given to women in the field of Latin American migration studies and gender, several of which are mentioned in this article. However, the main objective is to highlight the relative absence of heterosexual males. I discuss the reasons for the absence and its analytical and policy implications. I specifically raise questions and lines of research related to labour and migration trajectories of men, its effect on migration of women, remote fatherhood, and experiences of husbands and fathers who remain in their places of origin. To meet the objectives I review findings of colleagues, but also I use findings from my studies in Mexico-United States and Argentina. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The key elements behind the choice of a residential unit by a group or individual, may affect in a positive or negative way the different types of mobility that are carried out over the territories through several spatial practices. When these mobilities present difficulties at the time of moving, either physical (commuting), social, cultural, etc., these practices become complex. The present study hopes to grasp this reality from the choosing of the residendial unit and the quotidian mobility, focusing analysis on low-income Latin American migrant homes, and how they move across the area, modifying territories, primarily on the central area of the city of Iquique. Using fieldnotes and in-depth interviews, this work analyses the impact and costs that the choices of location have in the city, regarding the experiences and daily life of the poor migrant homes., Los factores decisivos detrás de la elección residencial de un hogar migrante afectan de manera negativa y positiva los diferentes tipos de movilidades que se desenfundan sobre los territorios a través de diversas prácticas espaciales.

Spain is undergoing a process of intense demographic change towards a more diverse society brought about by massive immigration over the last decade that includes a high proportion of Latin Americans. Pejoratively dubbed ‘sudacas’, they are moving in the opposite direction to the Spanish who went to Latin America 100 years ago. Multicultural Spain has two main facets: the historical regional minorities in Catalonia, Galicia and the Basque Country, elements of which have waged struggles for national autonomy; and the recent immigrant minorities, notably the Latin Americans, North Africans and Romanians. Hometown associations (HTAs) in the United States are migrant, voluntary groups with a shared sense of belonging to a region in a different country of origin. Their philanthropic activities across borders have increasingly attracted the attention of government agencies and social and political actors. These actors have endeavored to form more HTAs and place greater demands on them to expand their civic engagement. This strategy, however, will not necessarily lead to that purpose, but instead will likely exacerbate a critical gap in the HTAs' organizational capacity. This paper argues that a different strategy is best suited to strengthen the organizational ability of HTAs, and proposes a framework to achieve this goal based on a capacity building pilot program for Latino HTAs from the Los Angeles region. - Abstract
Scholars have questioned whether international migrants from Latin America are able to transfer their levels of education into the U.S. labor market. In this article, the author examines the data from the Latin American Migration Project for Guatemala, Mexico, Costa Rica, and Nicaragua to observe the ability of each of the immigrant groups to convert prior education into occupational attainments within the U.S. labor market. Results show intercountry differences in the ability of the immigrants to translate educational attainments into occupational outcomes. Nicaraguans are by far the most educated and are much better able to translate home country schooling into highly skilled U.S. occupations. However, findings reveal that Nicaraguans have received more of an occupational benefit from having legal documents. The author argues that in addition to divergent patterns of educational selectivity, the contrasting treatment of Nicaraguans and Mexicans by U.S. immigration law seems to be responsible, at least in part, for their very different positions in the U.S. labor market. Are international migrants transnational protest agents? Do they involve themselves in the northern NGOs devoted to defending human rights? On what roads does transnational human rights activism travel? On the crossroads on two fields of study privileged by a transnational approach, protest and migrations, and based on a case study, this article offers answers to these questions. The work is supported by well-formed knowledge of Latin American migration in France, and the examination of the experience of a human rights defense association, deeply involved in Latin America. The mechanisms of transnational action are specified and analyzed, and an explanation for the Colombian case is proposed: the permanence of the practice of Rebusquc (tirelessly seeking any kind of livelihood). - Abstract

The article analyzes how the trajectories and characteristics of migrant associations determine the promotion and implementation of co-development in the city of Madrid, Spain, and how the way co-development has been promoted has impacted on the discourse, orientation and transnationalization process of migrant associations. Through the analysis of field material (review of association websites and documents, interviews with associative representatives and attendance at meetings and events of the organizations), the text shows how co-development has been understood by associations as a window of opportunity to influence politics in a transnational way, strengthen their leadership and participate in political projects in the contexts of origin. The work contributes to the study of a scarcely analyzed topic for the Spanish case and the Latin American population. The main innovation of the study is the link between a political opportunity structures focus and a transnational perspective to explore in greater depth the scope of transnational political participation of migrant associations.

Immigration and identity ,Latin American migration - Abstract
This doctoral thesis deals with the ways Latin American immigrants try to adapt themselves to their new life in New York City. In the new city-destination, the immigrants construct their own symbolic, social, civic, and cultural spaces. This research also investigates the actions the subjects take to give meaning to and construct a representation of their immigration and stay, whether temporary or permanent, through a transnational lens. This thesis presents the diverse socio-cultural patterns and transnational imaginary that are reflected in the (re)configuration of the cartography of (im)-migration in New York City from 1960 to 2010. This study offers empirical material collected from two groups of migrants representative of the Latino population and immigrant city: namely, communities from the Dominican Republic and México. These two groups have their own migratory history in New York, and have different migratory generations. Dominican migration started in the 1960s, while Mexican migration has a more recent history. Upon arrival in the city, each of these groups began unique episodes in the history of Latin American immigration to New York. Latinos in the United States are often spoken of as though they constitute a homogeneous group, with only enough room for Puerto Ricans, Salvadorans, Mexicans, and Bolivians. This view neglects the fact that Latin America is itself an area of ethnic diversity, even within each nation. This study aims to generate a discussion about the meaning of being Latino and advance understanding of the peculiarities that inhabit this broad concept. All this comes from a territorial, social, cultural, and political perspective—inside and outside of Latin America.
