Between the 1930s and the 1960s, much emphasis was put in the Soviet Union on the technological development of the country. One of the latest wonders of technology was the tractor, which harvested crops efficiently and rapidly. This article is concerned with the Soviet cinematic representation of work with tractors as the most erotic characteristic of a man. A man attractive to women in Soviet cinema is not handsome but rather is someone proficient in operating a tractor. On the other hand, a man who does not know how to operate a tractor is represented as impotent and is ridiculed by female characters. Several romantic films were produced in which the relationship between the protagonists developed against a background of the use of a tractor. These films became iconic and classic: everyone saw them many times and knew their scripts by heart. Most of the films depict a young Soviet man and his path to the heart of his girlfriend, and some show the maturation of the young character and his transformation into a real man. These goals are achieved through his work as a tractor driver. Examples of this are films like The Rich Bride (romantic comedy, 1937), Tractor Drivers (romantic drama, 1939), Cossacks of the Kuban (romantic comedy, 1949), It Happened in Penkovo (romantic drama, 1957), and Knight’s Move (comedy, 1962). In all these films, work with tractors is represented as an integral part of the “machismo” of the Soviet man., В Советском Союзе с 1930-х по 1960-е гг. большое внимание уделялось технологическому развитию страны. Статья посвящена советскому пропагандистскому представлению работы на тракторе как самой эротической составляющей маскулинности в советском кино. Мужчина, привлекательный для женщин в советском кино, был не красавцем, а человеком, который умел управлять трактором. С другой стороны, если он не умел управлять трактором, он был представлен как импотент и подвергался осмеянию героями фильма, особенно женщинами. Был выпущен ряд романтических фильмов, в которых отношения между героями развивались в соответствии с умением мужчины управлять трактором. Они стали культовыми, классическими: все видели их много раз и знали их сценарии наизусть. The author analyses the Hebrew translation of Dostoyevsky’s Crime and Punishment by Jewish writer Y. H. Brenner published in the early 20th century, the time when Modern Hebrew was forming. The article considers the linguistic peculiarities of the Hebrew text compared to the original. The author reveals considerable differences in the linguistic and stylistic methods. In his translation, Brenner uses excerpts from Jewish prayers as parallels to the original Orthodox prayers, phrases from traditional Jewish books, and elements of the Jewish way of life. For example, to translate Raskolnikov’s adamant decision to carry out his plan and kill the pawnbroker, Brenner uses a Talmudic expression with easily recognisable Jewish religious associations. By doing so, Brenner makes his translation sound more elevated than the original. Despite the stylistic and semantic deviations from the original, Brenner’s translation is very accurate in rendering the spirit of Dostoyevsky’s book: this is not a coincidence, since Brenner’s worldview was close to that of the Russian writer. The introduction of idioms and associations characteristic of the Hebrew world and borrowings from the Jewish Bible and Talmud adds Jewish colour to the dialogues and musings of the characters, which changes the style of the novel considerably and introduces a noticeable shift in its spiritual tonality. Despite all the differences between the translation and the original, the Hebrew text does transmit the special ambience of Dostoyevsky’s novel., Представлен подробный анализ перевода на иврит романа Ф. М. Достоевского «Преступление и наказание», сделанного еврейским писателем И. Х. Бреннером в начале ХХ в., в период становления современного иврита. Рассмотрены языковые особенности ивритского текста в сопоставлении с оригиналом. Выявлены существенные отличия языковых и стилистических средств перевода от оригинала. В качестве параллелей упоминаемых в оригинале православных молитв Бреннер широко использует фрагменты еврейских молитв, выражения из традиционных еврейских книг, из религиозного еврейского быта. Например, твердое решение Раскольникова реализовать свой план и убить процентщицу у Бреннера переводится талмудическим выражением, несущим в себе еврейский религиозный смысл. Таким образом, Бреннер придает своему переводу более возвышенный стиль, отсутствующий в оригинале. Несмотря на стилистические и семантические отступления от оригинала, перевод Бреннера верно передает дух книги Достоевского, и это не случайно, ведь во многом мироощущение Бреннера было близко мироощущению русского писателя. Введение в ткань произведения идиом и ассоциаций, присущих миру иудаизма, а также заимствований из еврейской Библии и Талмуда придает еврейский колорит диалогам и размышлениям персонажей, что существенно изменяет стилистику романа и создает заметный сдвиг в его духовной проблематике. Невзирая на все различия с оригиналом, перевод Бреннера все же сумел передать специфическую проблематику и атмосферу произведения Достоевского.

Анализируются элементы еврейской мистики, к которым обращается Михаил Булгаков в романе «Белая гвардия». Ставится задача проследить источники мотивов, служащих для создания мифологического антуража в романе. Автором выявлено многократное использование элементов еврейской мистики в обрисовке образов. Михаил Шполянский, является собирательным образом «нечистой» силы и одновременно несет в себе семантику Мессии. По еврейским представлениям, Мессия должен страдать от отвратительных, открытых, гноящихся ран. Пациент Шполянский также страдает отталкивающей болезнью, но его недуги скрыты от людей, в отличие недугов еврейского Мессии. Отвращение, вызываемое ранами Мессии, предназначено для испытания степени человеколюбия и милосердия людей, во имя которых он должен сойти в этот мир. Если еврей сумеет преодолеть свое отвращение к ранам Мессии и поможет ему, проявив великодушие и сострадание, - тогда Бог излечит мнимые недуги Мессии и пошлет его к людям, где он установит Свое царство и освободит мир от всеобщего страдания. Автор ставит проблему, насколько осознанно обращался писатель к еврейским источникам, трактующим болезни Мессии и показывающим их в излишне натурализированном описании? Выявляется отход Булгакова от традиционной еврейской трактовки Аваддона, используемого писателем для обозначения Антихриста, который символизирует Демона Тьмы и Разрушения. Элементы из древнееврейских источников, которые широко использует Булгаков при описании потустороннего, мистического и демонического, фигурируют в несвойственном еврейскому оригиналу значении, что, вероятно, обусловлено тем, что Булгаков использовал сведения о еврейской мифологии, почерпнутые из Энциклопедического словаря Брокгауза и Ефрона. Но в этом издании еврейская мифология представлена в не соответствующих оригиналу характеристиках. Однако эти неточности не умаляют того факта, что Булгакову удалось создать в романе атмосферу, пропитанную древними еврейскими мистическими представлениями, и убедить в этом читателя., The article analyzes the elements of Jewish mysticism employed by Mikhail Bulgakov in his The White Guard and aims to trace the sources of motifs used to create a sense of mystery in the novel. The author enumerates multiple uses of Jewish mystical elements in the depiction of the characters. Mikhail Shpolyansky is both an image of the evil and refers to the Messiah. According to Jewish beliefs, the Messiah must suffer from disgusting open fester wounds. Likewise, Shpolyansky suffers from a repugnant disease but his ailment is unknown to the public unlike that of the Jewish Messiah. The disgust caused by the Messiah’s wounds is meant to verify the scale of humaneness and the capacity for mercy in the ones for whose sake the Messiah must descend to this world. If Jews can overcome the disgust they feel when looking at the Messiah’s wounds and help him, demonstrating benevolence and compassion, God will heal the Messiah’s imaginary diseases and send him to people where he will rule in God’s name and usher in a time of peace and eliminate all suffering. The author questions whether the use of Jewish sources was a conscious decision made by Bulgakov, when he interpreted the Messiah’s diseases and gave gory details of them. The question is that if Bulgakov emphasizes disgust caused by the patient and by his demonic nature, why he did not consider the motif of the repugnant wounds of the Jewish Messiah then. The author describes the writer’s digression from the traditional Jewish interpretation of Abaddon used by Bulgakov to refer to Antichrist who symbolizes the Demon of Darkness and Destruction. The elements of Old Jewish sources extensively used by Bulgakov when describing the supernatural, mystical and demonic quite often possess a meaning uncharacteristic of the one used in the Jewish original and are quite often presented inaccurately. Chemotherapy-induced neurotoxicity is a significant problem associated with successful treatment of many cancers. Tubulin is a well-established target of antineoplastic therapy; however, tubulin-targeting agents, such as paclitaxel and the newer epothilones, induce significant neurotoxicity. Eribulin mesylate, a novel microtubule-targeting analogue of the marine natural product halichondrin B, has recently shown antineoplastic activity, with relatively low incidence and severity of neuropathy, in metastatic breast cancer patients. The mechanism of chemotherapy-induced neuropathy is not well understood. One of the main underlying reasons is incomplete characterization of pathology of peripheral nerves from treated subjects, either from patients or preclinically from animals. The current study was conducted to directly compare, in mice, the neuropathy-inducing propensity of three drugs: paclitaxel, ixabepilone, and eribulin mesylate. Because these drugs have different potencies and pharmacokinetics, we compared them on the basis of a maximum tolerated dose (MTD). Effects of each drug on caudal and digital nerve conduction velocity, nerve amplitude, and sciatic nerve and dorsal root ganglion morphology at 0.25 × MTD, 0.5 × MTD, 0.75 × MTD, and MTD were compared. Paclitaxel and ixabepilone, at their respective MTDs, produced significant deficits in caudal nerve conduction velocity, caudal amplitude and digital nerve amplitudes, as well as moderate to severe degenerative pathologic changes in dorsal root ganglia and sciatic nerve. In contrast, eribulin mesylate produced no significant deleterious effects on any nerve conduction parameter measured and caused milder, less frequent effects on morphology. Overall, our findings indicate that eribulin mesylate induces less neuropathy in mice than paclitaxel or ixabepilone at equivalent MTD-based doses.

Chemotherapy is the most common method to treat cancer. The use of certain antineoplastic drugs, however, is associated with the development of peripheral neuropathy that can be dose-limiting. Excitotoxic glutamate release, leading to excessive glutamatergic neurotransmission and activation of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors, is associated with neuronal damage and death in several nervous system disorders. N-Acetyl-aspartyl-glutamate (NAAG) is an abundant neuropeptide widely distributed in the central and peripheral nervous system which is physiologically hydrolyzed by the enzyme glutamate carboxypeptidase into N-Acetyl-aspartyl (NAA) and glutamate. Pharmacological inhibition of glutamate carboxypeptidase results in decreased glutamate and increased endogenous NAAG and has been shown to provide neuroprotection in several preclinical models. Here, we report the neuroprotective effect of an orally available glutamate carboxypeptidase inhibitor on three well-established animal models of chemotherapy (cisplatin, paclitaxel, bortezomib)-induced peripheral neuropathy. In all cases, glutamate carboxypeptidase inhibition significantly improved the chemotherapy-induced nerve conduction velocity deficits. In addition, morphological and morphometrical alterations induced by cisplatin and bortezomib in dorsal root ganglia (DRG) were improved by glutamate carboxypeptidase inhibition.
