In previous work, we developed a topological framework for solving Riemann initial-value problems for a system of conservation laws. Its core is a differentiable manifold, called the wave manifold, with points representing shock and rarefaction waves. In the present paper, we construct, in detail, the three-dimensional wave manifold for a system of two conservation laws with quadratic flux functions. Using adapted coordinates, we derive explicit formulae for important surfaces and curves within the wave manifold and display them graphically. The surfaces subdivide the manifold into regions according to shock type, such as ones corresponding to the Lax admissibility criterion. The curves parametrize rarefaction, shock, and composite waves appearing in contiguous wave patterns. Whereas wave curves overlap in state space, they are disentangled within the wave manifold. We solve a Riemann problem by constructing a wave curve associated with the slow characteristic speed family, generating a surface from it using shock curves, and intersecting this surface with a fast family wave curve. This construction is applied to solve Riemann problems for several illustrative cases., Comment: 45 pages, 36 figures, submitted

We utilize a three-dimensional manifold to solve Riemann Problems that arise from a system of two conservation laws with quadratic flux functions. Points in this manifold represent potential shock waves, hence its name wave manifold. This manifold is subdivided into regions according to the Lax admissibility inequalities for shocks. Finally, we present solutions for the Riemann Problems for various cases and exhibit continuity relative to $L$ and $R$ data, despite the fact that the system is not strictly hyperbolic. The usage of this manifold regularizes the solutions despite the presence of an elliptic region., Comment: 42 pages, 48 figures. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1908.01870

In this paper, we study both convergence and bounded variation properties of a new fully discrete conservative Lagrangian--Eulerian scheme to the entropy solution in the sense of Kruzhkov (scalar case) by using a weak asymptotic analysis. We discuss theoretical developments on the conception of no-flow curves for hyperbolic problems within scientific computing. The resulting algorithms have been proven to be effective to study nonlinear wave formations and rarefaction interactions. We present experiments to a study based on the use of the Wasserstein distance to show the effectiveness of the no-flow curves approach in the cases of shock interaction with an entropy wave related to the inviscid Burgers' model problem and to a 2x2 nonlocal traffic flow symmetric system of type Keyfitz--Kranzer.

We design and implement an effective fully discrete Lagrangian–Eulerian scheme for a class of scalar, local and nonlocal models, and systems of hyperbolic problems in 1D. We propose statements, via a weak asymptotic analysis, which include existence, uniqueness, regularity, and numerical approximations of entropy‐weak solutions computed with the scheme for the corresponding nonlinear initial value problem for the local scalar case. We study both convergence and weak bounded variation (BV) properties of the scheme to the entropy solution (for the local and scalar case) in the sense of Kruzhkov. The approach is based on the improved concept of no‐flow curves, as introduced by the authors, and we highlight the strengths of the method: (i) the scheme for systems of hyperbolic problems does not require computation of the eigenvalues (exact or approximate) either to the numerical flux function or the weak CFL stability condition (wCFL) and (ii) we prove the properties: positivity‐preserving, total variation nonincreasing, and maximum principle subject to the wCFL. We present numerical experiments to evaluate the shock capturing capabilities of the scheme in resolving the main features for hyperbolic problems: shock waves, rarefaction waves, contact discontinuities, positivity‐preserving properties, and nonlinear wave formations and interactions. This paper has the objective to present equations capable of generating one-dimensional models that permit to quantify the thermal influence caused by igneous intrusions. In Paraná Basin, the petroleum systems were great influenced by igneous activities in which they are presented by a thick lava effusion, large number of dykes in the entire sedimentary section and various levels of sills intruded in stratifications to provide thermal energy for organic maturation. Thus, a better understanding of how and how much the intrusions affect the generation of oil and gas is extremely necessary since the knowledge related to the effects of intrusions in such atypical petroleum system is still insufficient. The obtained results show: the thermal influence caused by igneous intrusions is much higher than that proposed in the literature; the greater the number of intrusions and the thicker they are, the thermal influence is unfavorable at short distances and favorable at large distances. food and beverages - Abstract
Groundwater contamination by organic materials and petroleum products is a preoccupying problem with environmental, social and health implications constituting a menace to our high-quality groundwater resources. An important remediation technique is steam injection. The model that we propose to describe this injection is a balance system, because it considers the terms of mass transfer and chemical reactions in the different physical phases. We have developed techniques to solve the Riemann problems associated to the balance system for thermal flow in porous media. This theory was initially studied in [1] and it is extended in [2]. As an example, we analyze the steam and water injection in several proportions into a porous medium saturated with different mixtures of steam, water and small amounts of NAPL’s. One disadvantage of pure steam injection is the ecological impact of high temperatures. This can be alleviated if we co-inject nitrogen leading to a lower temperature, because the boiling temperature depends on nitrogen concentration and it is lower than the boiling temperature for pure water. We consider a one-dimensional porous medium filled with water, where steam and nitrogen are injected. We neglect compressibility, heat losses and capillarity effects and present a physical model for steam injection based on the mass balance and energy conservation equations. We show several Riemann solutions for different physical initial and injection conditions. An interesting feature is that we can calculate the mass transfer directly from the model, without knowing the expression for the mass transfer, see [2] for more details. Numerical methods are necessary, and are extremely important, in developing an understanding of the dynamics of multiphase flow of fluids in porous media applications to maximize hydrocarbon recovery as well as to simulate contaminant transport of soluble or insoluble species in groundwater contamination problems. This work deals with a problem very common in water-flooding process in petroleum reservoir to motivate the proposed modeling: the flow of two immiscible and incompressible fluid phases. The system of equations which describe this type of flow is a coupled, highly nonlinear system of time-dependent partial differential equations. The equation for the invading fluid (e.g., water phase) is a convection-dominated, degenerate parabolic partial differential equation whose solutions typically exhibit sharp moving fronts (e.g., moving internal layers with strong gradients) and it is very difficult to approximate numerically. We propose a two-stage numerical method to describe the injection problem for a model of two-phase (water-oil) flow in a porous rock, taking into account both gravity and hysteresis effects for solving transport flow problems in porous media. Indeed, we also investigate the Riemann problem for the one-dimensional, purely hyperbolic system, associated to the full differential model problem at hand. Thus, the use of accurate numerical methods in conjunction with one-dimensional semi-analytical Riemann solutions might provide valuable insight into the qualitative solution behavior of the full nonlinear governing flow system. Os resultados obtidos a partir do esquema de quatro campos proposto (elementos finitos mistos) concordam com a solução de referência (diferenças finitas) Abstract: In general, the computational simulations are often used to generate approximate solutions to get insights in imaging PDEs as well their comprehension in several applications as such medical imaging, geophysical imaging problems and image classification, just to name a few. The objective of this work is an analytical-computional study for fourth-order advection-diffusion equation solution in the context of imaging processing. Specifically motivated by the work of Bertozzi and Greer (2004), the differential model here studed is a Tumblin-Turk equation with advection in one spatial dimension. We propose a four-field mixed finite element method approximate numerically the fourth order equation in space and we used an implicit discretization in time. For the advective flux approximation, we used a finite volume method. Thus, the overall numerical discretization is locally conservative by construction. We present semi-analytical studies with the objective of better understanding some properties about the traveling wave solutions. Furthermore, it is presented a finite difference discretization for fourth order equation, based on article Bertozzi and Greer (2004). Todas essas propriedades são significativas e garantem a simplicidade e o poder dessa classe de esquemas semi-discretos positivos Abstract: In this thesis, we design and analyze a new class of positive Semi-Discrete Lagrangian-Eulerian (SDLE) schemes for solving multidimensional initial value problems for scalar models and systems of conservation laws. The construction of the schemes is based on the space-time no-flow surface region, previously presented and analyzed for fully discrete schemes. The implementation of the scheme in the case of systems is a straightforward componentwise application of the multidimensional scalar case, but, importantly, the new semi-discrete approach does not require dimensional splitting strategies. Entropy-convergence proof for the multidimensional scalar case is provided via weak asymptotic analysis. We also prove that the new two-dimensional Lagrangian-Eulerian scheme satisfies the scalar maximum principle along with relevant estimates, which also implies the uniqueness of the weak solution satisfying Kruzhkov entropy condition. It is worth pointing out that we also highlight the possibility of the use of the no-flow curves as a novel desingularization analysis technique for construction of computationally stable numerical flux, in locally conservative form, for numerically solving nonlinear hyperbolic problems. Moreover, we show that the new semi-discrete Lagrangian-Eulerian scheme, in the more general context of multidimensional hyperbolic systems of conservation laws, also satisfies the positivity principle introduced by P. Lax and X.-D. Liu (1996, 2003). Indeed, by using the properties of the no-flow curves, it is not necessary to obtain the eigenvalues associated with the hyperbolic flux to guarantee the positivity in a weak sense of the new proposed semi-discrete numerical scheme. We also use suitable estimates on the no-flow curves for numerically stable computations – for solving scalar equations and multidimensional systems – in a fashion similar to that of the well-known stability condition by Courant–Friedrichs–Lewy (CFL), but without the need to employ the eigenvalues (exact or approximate values) of the relevant Jacobian of the hyperbolic flux functions. Another interesting feature of the semi-discrete no-flow Lagrangian-Eulerian construction is that the matrices are symmetric for free (actually, they are diagonal), which is independent for a general class of hyperbolic flux for scalar problems and systems as well. We also demonstrate the application of our semi-discrete scheme to nontrivial two-dimensional scalar problems and systems that display intricate wave interactions. The multidimensional SDLE scheme retains simplicity, with a very good resolution, is efficient in terms of computational and memory cost, and is simple to implement as well since no (local) Riemann problems are solved; hence, time-consuming field-by-field type decompositions are avoided in the case of systems. These features are significant and ensure the simplicity and power of this class of positive semi-discrete schemes Doutorado Matemática Aplicada Doutor em Matemática Aplicada CAPES 001

Several formulations and theories relating from Socrates to Gardner have helped to contribute in some way to determine, for example, through National Educational Parameters Guidelines, in Brazil known as PCN, guiding principles to assist the school and teachers to understand how and what is advised to adopt regarding the guiding procedures in the apprenticeship system. The influence of evolution of the technological fronts boosted the circulation of a lot of information coming from multiple directions and this fact seems to have created an educational gap that as provides too much freedom and passivity to the individual, student, removing interest and responsibility from him, as restrains and traps the teacher against the wall, inducing him to be practically the only and great responsible for the entire formation process. The result of this situation appears, in evaluations frequently carried out, with low indexes that indicate the degradation in the acquisition of mathematical knowledge. Therefore, these are the appraisals made by this work which, in order to make some contribution to the educational environment, presents a proposal henceforth called CIC - Contextual Inverse Construction, which consists of presenting a different point of view to be used in the classroom practice foster real mathematical reasoning; and, still proposes an idea of simple questions about basic and fundamental concepts of Mathematics so that it serves as inspiration for the teacher to be able to better understand that often the difficulty is in the elementary and that, with simple adjustments in his daily practice, it is possible to begin to reverse the current scenario. We discuss a numerical modeling to approximate a two-phase flow in a heterogeneous porous media taking into account effects of dynamic capillary pressure. The governing system of equations consists of a pseudo-parabolic transport saturation system and an elliptic pressure-velocity problem. We rewrite the transport system in order to obtain a elliptic equation for capillary pressure. Therefore, we are able to use the same numerical approach for both problems. We combine mixed finite element discretization and locally conservative finite volume techniques. An implicit strategy is applied for the numerical solution of the transport problem of pseudo-parabolic nature. We performed two-dimensional simulations in a variety of flow regimes along with heterogeneous permeability fields and gravity effects. The adopted approach evidences that the final mathematical formulation of this method is completely dependent on the computational strategies chosen for its implementation. ln this way, the DMTB is established as a mathem.atical-computational model of variable final formulation. Our formulation uses a computational strategy based on Nonlinear Conjugate Gradients {NLCG) algorithms. The final model obtained is slightly different from the DMTB that was originally presented in the literature by Vanderbilt group. lt is in accordance with the version presented by Millam and Scuseria, in 1997. Our development considered nonstandard themes of both Mathematics and Computation such as functions with domains in matrix spaces and the development of differential calculus techniques in these spaces and modifications in the structure of NLCG. The approach which was used develops the m.athematical aspects airr?ng at effective computational implementation of the methodology. Thus, given that technological advances and scientific knowledge must be closely related, the present dissertation intends to fulfill a gap in the specialized literature, since there are no texts with pedagogical objectives or that are associated, in a natural way ,with m.athematical and computational modeling aspects ofthe DMTB.

The balance laws express in a more general way the conservation laws and therefore it is naturalthattheycoincideinsomedefinitionsorresultsthatwewillshowhere. Thestrictly hyperbolic systems of conservation laws in a spatial dimension under certain conditions is a symmetrizable system, therefore it has a convex entropy. This induces to define the entropy-entropy flux pair and the entropy production, minimum ingredients to use the Entropy rate admissibility criterion and check whether the solution of the respective Riemann problem is optimal. The entropy rate defined here in terms of entropy is a functional that can be minimized in the wave fans with constant states of the Riemann problem using the Euler-Lagrange equations, we show that the solutions of the Riemann problem are functions of bounded variation, resulting in a variational method to solve the respective problem. In this work it will be shown that the solution obtained by the variational method, coincides with the solution obtained by the method of characteristics.

The purpose of this thesis is to develop, at least formally by construction, conservative methods for approximating specific classes of differential models. Our major applications consist in shallow water equations and nonstandard convection-diffusion problems in the context of transport phenomena, related to discontinuous capillary pressure problems in porous media. The main focus in this work is to develop under the Lagrangian-Eulerian framework a simple and efficient scheme to, on the discrete level, account for the delicate nonlinear balance between the numerical approximations of the hyperbolic flux and source term, and between the hyperbolic flux and the diffusion operator. The proposed numerical schemes are aimed to be independent of particular structures of the flux functions. The water is assumed to have low salinity concentration, where some ions are dissolved. We disregard that there is in the rocks some possible minerals that can dissolve or precipitate in water phase. There are two chemical fluid components as well as two immiscible phases: water and oil, (w, o). The dissolved ions are: positive divalent ions: calcium ions, Ca2+ and magnesium ions, Mg2+; negative divalent ions: sulphate ions, SO42?; positive monovalent ions: sodium ions, Na+; negative monovalent ions: cloride ions, Cl?. The cations are modeled to be involved in fast ion exchange process with a surface negative X? which can absorb the positive ions, Ca2+, Mg2+ and Na+. We use simple mixing rules and we disregard any heat of precipitation/dissolution of substance reactions or ion desorption. Moreover we disregard any volume contraction efects resulting from mixing and reactions in any phase. We are going to solve in this work, the Riemann problem and we are going to discuss some features about the studied model. These difficulties affect the understanding of other topics within mathematics and in some related disciplines that depend on the good construction and understanding of functions. In this sense to propose innovative mechanisms for the teaching of mathematics, we use a mathematical software Dynamic Geometry, called GeoGebra to be a tooling to assist the functions of education through construction of workshops and modeling them. To be a recurring theme and great application in mathematical studies and related areas, it is interesting to use different mechanisms for progression of Education and its applications, in each year of high school. The study of functions is better absorbed and can measure in the display such mathematical object is realized in a systematic way. In addition to using the software with a graphical builder animation tool allows students to motion graphic display according to the variation of the coefficients. Search tools for a better understanding of this important topic , combine the playful aspect to teaching, trying to captivate the student so that it can be interested more deeply in the subject , aiding their learning. GeoGebra has the ability to "plotting" (in mathematical jargon: "draw") graphics in the form (general) literal and still has a tool that allows the graphics animate what we intend to exploit to facilitate students' understanding of the study of these functions.

In order to deal with this problem, we present some problems and situations that should serve as guides for teachers and students which unaware of the use thereof. In them, we value creativity and construction knowledge by the student as well as develop some content present in the minimum curriculum of mainstream education. In the current context, where such resources are as yet little used by us math teachers, these problems are exposed in order to provide different possibilities of integrating mathematical modeling activities in the classroom with the expectation that readers create optimistic outlook to its use in the practice of teaching mathematics.
