8. Advanced voltage control for energy conservation in distribution networks

Abstract

The increasing awareness on the effect of carbon emissions in our planet has led to several countries to adopt targets for their reduction. One way of contributing to this aim is to use and distribute electricity more efficiently. In this context, Conservation Voltage Reduction (CVR), a well-known technique that takes advantage of the positive correlation between voltage and demand to reduce energy consumption, is gaining renewed interest. This technique saves energy by only reducing customer voltages, without relying on customer actions and, therefore, can be controlled by the Distribution Network Operator (DNO). CVR not only brings benefits to the electricity system by reducing generation requirements (fewer fossil fuel burning and carbon emissions), but also to customers, as energy bill reductions. The extent to which CVR can bring benefits mainly depends on the customers load composition and their voltages. While the former dictates the voltage-demand correlation, the latter constraints the voltage reduction that can be applied without violating statutory limits. Although CVR has been studied for many years, most of the studies neglect the time-varying voltage-demand characteristic of loads and/or do not assess end customer voltages. While these simplifications could be used to estimate CVR benefits for fixed and limited voltage reductions, realistic load and network models are needed to assess the performance of active CVR schemes, where voltages are actively managed to be close to the minimum limit. Moreover, distribution networks have been traditionally designed with limited monitoring and controllability. Therefore, CVR has been typically implemented by adopting conservative voltage reductions from primary substations, for both American and European-style networks. However, as new infrastructure is deployed in European-style LV networks (focus of this work), such as monitoring and on-load tap changers (OLTCs), the opportunity arises to actively manage voltages closer to end customer (unlocking further energy savings). Although these technologies have shown to effectively control voltages in LV networks, their potential for CVR has not been assessed before. Additionally, most CVR studies were performed in a context where distributed generation (DG) was not common. However, this has changed in many countries, with residential photovoltaic (PV) systems becoming popular. As this is likely to continue, the interactions of residential PV and CVR need to be studied. This thesis contributes to address the aforementioned literature gaps by: (i) proposing a simulation framework to characterise the time-varying voltage-demand correlation of individual end customers; (ii) developing a process to model real distribution networks (MV and LV) from DNO data; (iii) adopting a Monte Carlo-based quantification process to cater for the uncertainties related to individual customer demand; (iv) assessing the CVR benefits that can be unlocked with new LV infrastructure and different PV conditions. To accomplish (iv), first, a simple yet effective rule-based scheme is proposed to actively control voltages in OLTC-enabled LV networks without PV and using limited monitoring. It is demonstrated that by controlling voltages closer to customers, annual energy savings can increase significantly, compared to primary substation voltage reductions. Also, to understand the effect of PV on CVR, a centralized, three-phase AC OPF-based CVR scheme is proposed. This control, using monitoring, OLTCs and capacitors across MV and LV networks, actively manages voltages to minimize energy consumption in high PV penetration scenarios whilst considering MV-LV constraints. Results demonstrate that without CVR, PV systems lead to higher energy imports for customers without PV, due to higher voltages. Conversely, the OPF-based CVR scheme can effectively manage voltages throughout the day, minimising energy imports for all customers. Moreover, if OLTCs at secondary substations are available (and managed in coordination with the primary substation OLTC), these tend to regulate customer voltages close to the minimum statutory limit (lower tap positions), while the primary OLTC delivers higher voltages to the MV network to also reduce MV energy losses.

18. Mapping Human Resources to Guide Ophthalmology Capacity-Building Projects in Honduras: Sub-national Analyses of Physician Distribution and Surgical Practices.

Abstract

Objective: To map ophthalmologist locations and surgical practices as they vary sub-nationally within Honduras to maximize the impact of efforts to develop cataract surgical capacity. Methods: An anonymous survey was sent to all Honduran ophthalmologists with questions on surgical volume, department-level location, type of facility in which they work, surgical methods, and age. Surgical volume, population, and poverty data sourced through the Oxford Poverty Human Development Initiative were mapped at the department level, and cataract surgical rates (CSR; surgeries per million population per year) were calculated and mapped. Results: Sixty-one of the 102 Honduran ophthalmologists contacted responded. Of those, 85% perform cataract surgery, and 49% work at least part time in a non-profit or governmental facility. Honduras has fewer surgical ophthalmologists per million than the global average, and though national CSR appears to be increasing, it varies significantly between departments. The correlation between CSR and poverty is complex, and outliers provide valuable insights. Conclusion: Mapping ophthalmological surgical practices as they relate to population and poverty at a sub-national level provides important insights into geographic trends in the need for and access to eye care. Abstract

Background: Antibiotics are used to treat bacterial infections but also impact immunity. This is usually attributed to antibiotic-induced dysbiosis of the microbiota, but antibiotics may have a direct effect on immune cells and immunity-associated receptors, such as Toll-like receptors (TLRs).Objectives: To investigate whether antibiotics alter TLR2/1, TLR2/6 and TLR4 activity in immune cells.Methods: We evaluated the effects of amoxicillin, ciprofloxacin, doxycycline and erythromycin on TLR2/1-, TLR2/6- and TLR4-induced NF-κB activation in THP1-XBlue™-MD2-CD14 cells. Furthermore, we studied TNF-α and IL-6 levels in THP-1-derived macrophages after exposure to these antibiotics and TLR ligands.Results: Amoxicillin had no effect on any of the TLRs studied. However, ciprofloxacin reduced TLR2/1, TLR2/6 and TLR4 activity in THP1-XBlue™-MD2-CD14 cells and decreased TLR2/1-induced TNF-α and IL-6 in macrophages. Doxycycline reduced TLR2/6 and TLR4 activity in THP1-XBlue™-MD2-CD14 cells and TNF-α and IL-6 levels in response to TLR2/6 stimulation in macrophages. Erythromycin decreased TLR2/1 and TLR4 activity in THP1-XBlue™-MD2-CD14 cells without changes in TNF-α and IL-6 levels in macrophages. In addition, ciprofloxacin decreased the expression of TLR2 mRNA.Conclusions: These results suggest that some antibiotics may attenuate TLR-dependent monocyte/macrophage responses and likely reduce bacterial clearance. The latter is particularly important in infections with AMR bacteria, where misprescribed antibiotics not only fail in control of AMR infections but might also weaken host defence mechanisms by limiting innate immune responses. Our data suggest that efforts should be made to prevent the deterioration of the immune response during and after antibiotic treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

27. Gestational diabetes mellitus and fetoplacental vasculature alterations:Exploring the role of adenosine kinase in endothelial (dys)function

Abstract

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a pregnancy disease characterized by maternal high blood glucose in the second or third trimester. GDM increases the cardiovascular risk in the offspring. GDM fetoplacental vasculature is characterized by endothelial dysfunction, proinflammation and increased angiogenesis. Adenosine regulates vascular function. In the fetoplacental circulation during GDM, an accumulation of adenosine is reported. In this thesis, we explored the role of adenosine kinase (AK), the main regulator of adenosine, in fetoplacental endothelial dysfunction during GDM. We used human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs), incubated with basal (BG) or high D-glucose (HG) (to mimic normal and high blood glucose) and/or tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF⍺) (proinflammatory stimulus). To assess the role of AK we used ABT-702, an AK inhibitor. We evaluated mRNA and protein expression of adenosine regulators, enzymes involved in cellular methylation reactions, markers of endothelial dysfunction, inflammation, angiogenesis, and mitochondrial parameters. In HUVECs, we found that HG altered adenosine regulators, methylation, endothelial dysfunction and proinflammatory markers. HG did not alter the expression of angiogenesis markers nor cell migration. AK inhibition reduced the proinflammatory effect of HG. Moreover, ABT-702 increased cell migration only under BG. The proinflammatory effect of TNF⍺ was reduced by AK inhibition. HG and TNF⍺ had an effect on different parameters in the mitochondria in which AK seems not to play a role. Our data in HUVECs, show that HG and TNF⍺ can partly mimic the effects observed on GDM fetoplacental vasculature, and AK might play a role in some of those effects.

Abstract

Introducción: La sialometaplasia necrotizante (SN) es una rara enfermedad benigna, inflamatoria de las glándulas salivales menores y mayores, comúnmente asociada a las ubicadas en la porción más posterior del paladar duro. La similitud de sus características clínicas e histológicas con algunas lesiones glandulares malignas, puede resultar en tratamientos innecesarios, considerando que la SN se resuelve espontáneamente entre 3-12 semanas. Caso clínico: Presentamos el caso de un adulto joven, con diagnóstico de SN, con sus características clínicas, histológicas y la evolución de la lesión. Salivary glands Introduction: Necrotizing sialometaplasia (NS) is a rare benign inflammatory disease that affects the major and minor salivary glands. Commonly associated with the salivary glands of the rearmost portion of the hard palate. The similarity of their clinical and histological with some malignant glandular lesions may result in unnecessary treatment, whereas the NS resolves spontaneously within 3-12 weeks. Clinical case: We present the case of a young adult diagnosed with NS, with its clinical, histological and evolution of the injury.

47. Preliminary Results on Light Conditions Manipulation in Octopus vulgaris (Cuvier, 1797) Paralarval Rearing

Abstract

High paralarvae mortality is a major bottleneck currently hindering the control over the lifecycle of common octopus (Octopus vulgaris Cuvier, 1797). It is believed that this problem might be related to either zoo-technical and/or nutritional aspects. The present paper is focused on the study of different zoo-technical aspects related to light conditions on the rearing of paralarvae, including the effects of polarization in prey ingestion, the use of a blue filter to simulate natural conditions, and the use of focused light to avoid reflections of the rearing tank’s walls. In the first experiment, O. vulgaris paralarvae ingestion of Artemia sp. and copepods (Tisbe sp.) was assessed under either normal or polarized light. In the second experiment, the effect of a blue filter with natural light or focused artificial light on growth and mortality was assessed over 15 days of rearing. Ingestion rate was not influenced by light polarization. Nonetheless, a significantly higher ingestion of Artemia sp. with respect to copepods was observed. The blue filter promoted the use of natural light conditions in Octopus paralarval culture, while focused light reduced the collision of the paralarvae against the walls. However, no significant differences were found in paralarval growth nor survival

Abstract

Encuesta El trabajo que se realiza a continuación, consiste en el desarrollo de un estudio, que tiene como objetivo crear un plan promocional para el lanzamiento del producto Power Bank Kalley en el municipio de Pasto, presupuestado para el segundo semestre del año 2015. Al ser este un artículo de baja rotación, al cual no se le ha dado un tratamiento especializado que logre generar su posicionamiento en el mercado, la campaña y estrategias que se plantean en el transcurso de este, deben proyectar que las baterías externas de celulares sean reconocidas por los habitantes locales; por lo tanto, la investigación será basada en indagaciones e informaciones veraces, sacadas de fuentes confiables, datos proporcionados por el departamento nacional de estadística y encuesta hecha a personas de la ciudad. En los marcos presentados más adelante se observara metodología del trabajo, contexto, leyes, entorno y antecedentes del producto a lanzar, también se definirán conceptos importantes con base en fundamentos sustentados, que se emplearan para la elaboración del proyecto. Para conocer cómo está el mercado se elaborará una encuesta, tiene como fin saber el posicionamiento y reconocimiento en que se encuentra el producto objeto de estudio, también se pretende entender las cualidades y características que aprecia el consumidor; los resultados del anterior estudio facilitaran la generación de ideas que servirán para el planteamiento del plan promocional. La encuesta e investigación proporcionaran el análisis del entorno que rodea al producto, esto ayudara a la elaboración de un diagnóstico mediante matriz DOFA, el DOFA permitirá utilizar los resultados del estudio previo y de esta manera se podrá establecer estrategias que se utilizaran en el plan promocional de lanzamiento. Posterior al DOFA se encontrara el plan promocional, en este se presentaran planes de acción, lo cual implica describir paso a paso, el desarrollo de cada una de las estrategias entregadas por el resultado de la matriz, también se incluirá indicadores de gestión y cronogramas. Por último se hallará las conclusiones, que darán respuesta a los objetivos del proyecto, además se mencionará recomendaciones y bibliografía respectivamente. Los resultados esperados tienen como fin incrementar la rotación y generar el reconocimiento del producto Power Bank Kalley en el municipio de Pasto. To learn how the market survey will be developed, aims to know the positioning and recognition in the product under study is, it also seeks to understand the qualities and characteristics that appreciates the consumer, and the results of the previous study facilitate the generation ideas that will serve to raise the promotional plan. The survey and research provide the analysis of the environment surrounding the product; this will help the development of a diagnosis using DOFA matrix, the DOFA permitted to use the results of the previous study, in order to establish strategies that will be used in the promotional plan release. DOFA post the promotional plan in this action plans were presented, which involves describing step by step, the development of each of the strategies submitted by the outcome of the matrix is found, indicators and timelines will also be included. Finally, the findings, which will respond to the project objectives, will be found further recommendations mentioned and bibliography respectively. The expected results are intended to increase turnover and create product recognition Kalley Power Bank in the Pasto city.

49. Síndrome de Vogt Koyanagi Harada: a propósito de un caso

Abstract

Vogt Koyanagi Harada syndrome is a panuveitis bilateral granulomatous associated with exudative retinal detachment, with cutaneous and neurologic manifestations. It is more common in breeds specially pigmented in Oriental and the American Indian. Its incidence is highest between 20 and 50 years of age, most affecting the female gender whose ratio is 2:1. We present the case of a 25-year-old served in the San Felipe General Hospital located in the city of Tegucigalpa, Honduras; with a history of progressive loss of visual acuity, eye pain, frontal headache of moderate intensity, flashes of 8 days of evolution. Eye examination found: visual acuity seen light in both eyes. At the bottom of eye: retina with bilateral detachment in funnel with multiple extensive exuding bags, peripapilar vasculitis. Ocular perinatologists revealed bilateral choroid detachment, cerebral computed axial tomography which did not present alterations, and lumbar puncture with cerebrospinal pleocytosis. Given by the clinical manifestations and cerebrospinal fluid pleocytosis was the diagnosis of VogtKayanagiHarada syndrome. Despite being a disease little VKH Syndrome often presents significant complications such as vision loss in young patients, so his diagnosis early becomes essential for a better prognosis, proper anamnesis, physical examination with a thorough ophthalmologic examination and an ultrasound examination in the early phase of the disease allows a fast and timely diagnosis reducing complications in the late phase., El síndrome de Vogt Koyanagi Harada es una panuveitis granulomatosa bilateral asociada a desprendimiento exudativo de la retina, con manifestaciones cutáneas y neurológicas. Es más frecuente en razas pigmentadas especialmente en orientales y en el indio americano. Su incidencia es más alta entre los 20 y 50 años de edad, afectando más al género femenino cuya relación es 2:1. Presentamos el caso de una paciente de 25 años de edad, atendida en el Hospital General San Felipe ubicado en la ciudad de Tegucigalpa, Honduras; con historia de pérdida progresiva de la agudeza visual, dolor ocular, cefalea frontal de intensidad moderada, fotopsias de 8 días de evolución. Al examen oftalmológico se encontró: agudeza visual percibe luz en ambos ojos. Al Fondo de Ojo: retina con desprendimiento bilateral en embudo con múltiples bolsas exudativas extensas, vasculitis peripapilar. Ultrasonograma ocular reveló desprendimiento coroideo bilateral, Tomografia axial computarizada cerebral la cual no presentó alteraciones, y punción lumbar con pleocitosis en líquido cefalorraquídeo. Dadas por las manifestaciones clínicas, y pleocitosis en Líquido Cefalorraquídeo se realizó el diagnóstico de Síndrome VogtKayanagiHarada. El síndrome VKH a pesar de ser una enfermedad poco frecuente presenta complicaciones importantes como la perdida de la visión en pacientes jóvenes, por lo que su diagnóstico temprano se vuelve esencial para un mejor pronóstico, la anamnesis adecuada, el examen físico con una exploración oftalmológica minuciosa y Realizar un examen ecográfico en la fase temprana de la enfermedad permite un rápido y oportuno diagnóstico, disminuyendo las complicaciones en la fase tardía.
