Abstract

This paper provides a general and abstract approach to compute invariant distributions for Feller processes. More precisely, we show that the recursive algorithm presented in Lamberton and Pages (2002) and based on simulation algorithms of stochastic schemes with decreasing steps can be used to build invariant measures for general Feller processes. We also propose various applications: Approximation of Markov Brownian diffusion stationary regimes with a Milstein or an Euler scheme and approximation of a Markov switching Brownian diffusion stationary regimes using an Euler scheme.

Abstract

Diamond as a wide band-gap semiconductor exhibits unrivalled figures of merit for power electronics. However this application has been held back by the poor availability of thick large-area electrically-conductive diamond material that is a prerequisite for developing elemental devices. Efforts have been devoted to optimizing CVD growth and doping on conventional (100) and more rarely (111) crystal orientations but (113) has yet almost never been considered. In this work we report the growth of thick CVD diamond films on (113)-oriented substrates with various boron doping levels. We found that high-quality films can be obtained on this orientation with a 5-times improved doping efficiency as compared to (100). A thick freestanding CVD plate with a low resistivity and a doping level of 4 × 10 20 cm − 3 is demonstrated which paves the way to the fabrication of efficient Schottky diodes based on this orientation.

Abstract

The ratio of the differential scattering cross sections involving distinguishable and indistinguishable isotopes may exhibit non-mass dependent angular variations. A numerical application of this hypotheses to the ozone reaction rates reproduces some of the results observed in laboratory experiments. This theory could be tested through a cross beam experiment where the isotopic composition of the scattered products is recorded as a function of their scattering angles.Key words. Abstract

The UV-visible Global Ozone Monitoring by Occultation of Stars (GOMOS) instrument onboard Envisat performs nighttime measurements of ozone, NO2, NO3 and of the aerosol extinction, using the stellar occultation method. We have conducted a validation exercise using various balloon-borne instruments in different geophysical conditions from 2002 to 2006, using GOMOS measurements performed with stars of different magnitudes. GOMOS and balloon-borne vertical columns in the middle stratosphere are in excellent agreement for ozone and NO2. Some discrepancies can appear between GOMOS and balloon-borne vertical profiles for the altitude and the amplitude of the concentration maximum. These discrepancies are randomly distributed, and no bias is detected. The accuracy of individual profiles in the middle stratosphere is 10 % for ozone and 25 % for NO2. On the other hand, the GOMOS NO3 retrieval is difficult and no direct validation can be conducted. The GOMOS aerosol content is also well estimated, but the wavelength dependence can be better estimated if the aerosol retrieval is performed only in the visible domain. We can conclude that the GOMOS operational retrieval algorithm works well and that GOMOS has fully respected its primary objective for the study of the trends of species in the middle stratosphere, using the profiles in a statistical manner. Some individual profiles can be partly inaccurate, in particular in the lower stratosphere. Improvements could be obtained by reprocessing some GOMOS transmissions in case of specific studies in the middle and lower stratosphere when using the individual profiles.

Abstract

Vibrational energies for low-lying levels of CO2 trapped in rare gas matrices are determined for four isotopic species by applying a theoretical model allowing contact transformation method to be applied as perturbation technique to the molecule trapped in a distorted lattice structure. Results are given for molecules trapped in krypton and xenon. For the latter, both face-centered-cubic (fcc) and hexagonal-closed-packed (hcp) structures are shown to be possible. New harmonic and anharmonic constants are determined that allows calculation of matrix dependent calculated energy levels. It is shown that if distortion of the lattice is calculated for one isopotomer, then it can be used to calculate vibrational energies of other trapped isotopic species. Changes are more significant for harmonic potential constants than for third order anharmonic ones. Calculated energy levels compare well with observed ones. Predictions of unobserved ones for the latter isotope and other species are also made. The values calculated for 13C16O2 are consistent with LIF experimental results.

Abstract

The content of the current 2003 version, GEISA/IASI-03, of the computer-accessible spectroscopic database, GEISA (Gestion et Etude des Informations Spectroscopiques Atmospheriques: Management and Study of Atmospheric Spectroscopic Information)/IASI (Infrared Atmospheric Sounder Interferometer) is described. The GEISA/IASI-03 system comprises three independent spectroscopic archives related with: an individual line transition spectroscopic parameters sub-database which contains 14 molecules, i.e.: H2O, CO2, O3, N2O, CO, CH4, O2, NO, SO2, NO2, HNO3, OCS, C2H2, N2, representing 51 isotopomers and 702,550 entries, in the spectral range 599-3001 cm-1; an absorption cross-sections sub-database which comprehends 6,572,329 entries related to 6 molecules, i.e.: CFC-11, CFC-12, CFC-14, HCFC-22, N2O5, CCl4; a catalog on micro-physical and optical properties of atmospheric aerosols, mainly refractive indices. The modifications and improvements, made since former editions in terms of database content and management, are detailed. GEISA/IASI is elaborated with the purpose of assessing the IASI (Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer: http://earth-sciences.cnes.fr/IASI/) measurements capabilities, within the ISSWG (IASI Sounding Science Working Group), in the frame of the CNES (Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales, France)/EUMETSAT (EUropean organization for the exploitation of METeorological SATellites) European Polar System (EPS) preparation. Abstract

International audience; On 21–22 August 2001, NO, NO2 and HNO3 mixing ratio profiles were measured at high latitudes during sunset and sunrise using the Limb Profile Monitor of the Atmosphere (LPMA) and the DOAS experiments under stratospheric balloon. Photochemical simulations using the chemistry module of the Reprobus Chemistry Transport Model (CTM) that are constrained by ozone and total NOy balloon observations reproduce well the partitioning of NOx and NOy when model results are calculated at the exact time and location of the measurement for each tangent altitude. Taking the recently recommended reaction rate coefficients for the NOy partitioning (JPL-2003) and using realistic aerosol surface area in order to initialise the model leads to an agreement between calculations and measurements better than 10% all over the covered altitude range.

Abstract

Remote sensing based on quantitative spectroscopy is a powerful tool for precise measurements of atmospheric trace species concentrations, through the use of characteristic spectral signatures of the different molecular species and their associated vibration–rotation and electronic bands in the microwave, infrared, and UV-visible domains. A reliable retrieval of the concentration profiles requires a good characterisation of measurement and spectral fitting errors. This includes an accurate knowledge of spectroscopic parameters of all transition lines or absorption cross sections of interest since uncertainties lead to systematic retrieval errors; Les mesures à distances qui s'appuient sur la spectroscopie quantitative sont un outil puissant pour la mesure précise des concentrations d'espèces à l'état de trace dans l'atmosphère par l'utilisation des signatures spectrales caractéristiques des différentes espèces moléculaires, qui sont associées aux bandes de vibration–rotation et aux bandes électroniques dans les domaine micro-onde, infrarouge, et ultraviolet ou visible. Une inversion fiable du profil de concentration nécessite une bonne caractérisation des erreurs de mesure et d'ajustement des spectres. Ceci implique une connaissance précise des paramètres spectroscopiques de toutes les raies ou des sections efficaces d'absorption dont les incertitudes ont un impact direct sur les erreurs résultant de l'inversion des spectres observés.

Abstract

This paper describes the status of the 2004 edition of the HITRAN molecular spectroscopic database. The HITRAN compilation consists of several components that serve as input for radiative transfer calculation codes: individual line parameters for the microwave through visible spectra of molecules in the gas phase; absorption cross-sections for molecules having dense spectral features, i.e., spectra in which the individual lines are unresolvable; individual line parameters and absorption cross-sections for bands in the ultra-violet; refractive indices of aerosols; tables and files of general properties associated with the database; and database management software. The line-by-line portion of the database contains spectroscopic parameters for 39 molecules including many of their isotopologues.The format of the section of the database on individual line parameters of HITRAN has undergone the most extensive enhancement in almost two decades. It now lists the Einstein A-coefficients, statistical weights of the upper and lower levels of the transitions, a better system for the representation of quantum identifications, and enhanced referencing and uncertainty codes. In addition, there is a provision for making corrections to the broadening of line transitions due to line mixing. (C) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract

International audience; Vertical profiles of ozone concentration in the high latitudes were observed by the Improved Limb Atmospheric Spectrometer (ILAS) aboard the Advanced Earth Observing Satellite (ADEOS) from November 1996 to June 1997. The ozone data obtained by the version 5.20 ILAS retrieval algorithm are compared with those obtained by the version 19 Halogen Occultation Experiment (HALOE), the version 6 Stratospheric Aerosol and Gas Experiment (SAGE) II, and the version 6 Polar Ozone and Aerosol Measurement (POAM) II retrieval algorithms. The ILAS data are also compared with ozone data measured by ozonesondes, instruments on board balloons or an aircraft, and ground-based instruments. The ILAS ozone data generally agree with its correlative data between 11 and 64 km with some exceptions. Quantitatively, the median value of the relative difference (absolute difference divided by its mean value) for these comparisons was within ±10%. Relative differences (18%) exceeding the combined measurement errors were found around 45–55 km altitude from comparisons with the HALOE and SAGE II data in January 1997 in the Southern Hemisphere (SH). Larger relative differences (around 50%) were also found below 15 km from comparisons with the HALOE and POAM II data in November 1996 in the SH, but these absolute differences were 0.10–0.16 ppmv as the median value. The ozone data processed by the version 5.20 were improved compared to the former version 3.10, which is available to the general public. The version 5.20 ozone data can be used for scientific analysis purposes based on the accuracy of the data in comparison with these other instruments.

Abstract

[1] Measurements of CFC-12 were made by the Improved Limb Atmospheric Spectrometer (ILAS) between 57°N and 72°N in the Northern Hemisphere and between 64°S and 89°S in the Southern Hemisphere. ILAS was launched on 17 August 1996 on board the Advanced Earth Observing Satellite (ADEOS). The ILAS validation balloon campaigns were carried out from Kiruna, Sweden (68°N, 21°E), in February and March 1997 and from Fairbanks, Alaska (65°N, 148°W), in April and May 1997. During these validation balloon campaigns, CFC-12 was measured with the in situ instruments ASTRID, BONBON, and SAKURA and the remote sensing spectrometers MIPAS-B, FIRS-2, and MkIV. ILAS version 6.0 CFC-12 profiles obtained at the nearest location to the validation balloon measurement are compared with these validation balloon measurements. The quality of ILAS CFC-12 data processed with the version 6.0 algorithm improved significantly compared to previous versions. Low relative differences between ILAS CFC-12 and the correlative measurements of about 10% were found between 13 and 20 km. The comparison of vertical profiles shows that ILAS CFC-12 data are useful below about 20–22 km inside the vortex and below about 25 km outside the vortex. However, at greater altitudes the relative percentage difference increases very strongly with increasing altitude. Further, correlations of CFC-12 with N2O show a good agreement with the correlative measurements for N2O values of N2O > 150 ppbv. In summary, ILAS CFC-12 data are now suitable for scientific studies in the lower stratosphere.

Abstract

We present measurements of the shifts and widths of the rovibrational lines of the fundamental band of CO highly diluted in He and Ar at 296 K. The shifts are decomposed into parts odd and even in the line number, m. These are then compared with close coupled calculations carried out with the best known interaction potentials. There is general agreement between the calculated and measured values of the broadening and shifting. Furthermore, the results illustrate that the decomposition of the shifts into parts, odd and even in m, is a powerful tool for separating out the relative contributions of the isotropic and anisotropic part of the interaction to the shifts and which part needs to be corrected if there is a discrepancy. Thus, shift measurements can be added to the list of experiments that may be used to determine reliable interaction potentials. The results also show, given a potential, that close coupled calculations are accurate and could be used to confirm or establish empirical models of the temperature dependence of the broadening or shifting, etc. Such modeling is important at atmospheric physics.

Abstract

The effective operator approach is applied to the calculation of both line positions and line intensities of the (13)C(16)O(2) molecule. About 11 000 observed line positions of (13)C(16)O(2) selected from the literature have been used to derive 84 parameters of a reduced effective Hamiltonian globally describing all known vibrational-rotational energy levels in the ground electronic state. The standard deviation of the fit is 0.0015 cm(-1). The eigenfunctions of this effective Hamiltonian have then been used in fittings of parameters of an effective dipole-moment operator to more than 600 observed line intensities of the cold and hot bands covering the nu(2) and 3nu(2) regions. The standard deviations of the fits are 3.2 and 12.0% for these regions, respectively. The quality of the fittings and the extrapolation properties of the fitted parameters are discussed. A comparison of calculated line parameters with those provided by the HITRAN database is given. Finally, the first observations of the 2nu(1) + 5nu(3) and nu(1) + 2nu(2) + 5nu(3) absorption bands by means of photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) is presented. The deviations of predicted line positions from observed ones is found to be less than 0.1 cm(-1), and most of them lie within the experimental accuracy (0.007 cm(-1)) once the observed line positions are included in the global fit. Abstract

The infrared bands line-mixing effects of methane perturbed by nitrogen were discussed at different pressures. The spectral shapes of the ν2, ν4 and ν3 bands were compared at room temperature while the ν3 region was employed for the investigation of thermal effects. The effects of collisions in the ν4 region's spectra were calculated at the room temperature. The Coriolis coupling between ν2 and ν4 vibrational states resulted in the failure of evolution modeling with increasing pressure of absorption.© 2000 American Institute of Physics

Abstract

International audience; The current version GEISA-97 of the computer-accessible database system GEISA (Gestion et Etude des Informations Spectroscopiques Atmosphériques: Management and Study of Atmospheric Spectroscopic Information) is described. This catalogue contains 1,346,266 entries. These are spectroscopic parameters required to describe adequately the individual spectral lines belonging to 42 molecules (96 isotopic species) and located between 0 and 22,656 cm-1. The featured molecules are of interest in studies of the terrestrial as well as the other planetary atmospheres, especially those of the Giant Planets. GEISA-97 contains also a catalog of absorption cross-sections of molecules such as chlorofluorocarbons which exhibit unresolvable spectra. The modifications and improvements made to the earlier edition (GEISA-92) and the data management software are described. Abstract

Line mixing effects are studied in the v3 band of CH4 perturbed by Ar and He at room temperature. Experiments have been made in the 2800-3200 cm-1 spectral region using four different setups. They cover a wide range of total densities, including low (0.25-2 atm), medium (25-100 atm), and high (200-1000 atm) pressure conditions. Analysis of the spectra demonstrates that the spectral shapes (of the band, the Q branch, the P and R manifolds,...) are significantly influenced by line mixing. The theoretical approach proposed in the preceding paper is used in order to model and analyze these effects. As done previously, semiclassical state-to-state rates are used together with a few empirical constants. Comparisons between measurements and spectra computed with and without the inclusion of line mixing are made. They prove the quality of the approach which satisfactorily accounts for the effects of pressure and of rotational quantum numbers on the spectral shape. It is shown that collisions with He and Ar lead to different line-coupling schemes (e.g., more coupling within the branches and less between branches) and hence to different shapes. The influence of line coupling between different branches and manifolds is evidenced and studied using high pressure spectra and absorption in the band wings. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract

Line-mixing effects have been studied in the ν3 band of CH4 perturbed by N2 at room temperature. New measurements have been made and a model is proposed which is not, for the first time, strictly empirical. Three different experimental set ups have been used in order to measure absorption in the 2800-3200 cm-1 spectral region for total pressures in the 0.25-2 and 25-80 atm ranges. Analysis of the spectra demonstrates the significant influence of line mixing on the shape of the Q branch and of the P and R manifolds. A model is proposed which is based on state-to-state collisional transfer rates calculated from the intermolecular potential surface with a semiclassical approach. The line-coupling relaxation matrix is constructed from these data and two additional parameters which are fitted on measured absorption. Comparisons between measurements and spectra computed accounting for and neglecting line mixing are made. They prove the quality of the approach which satisfactory accounts for the effects of pressure and of rotational quantum numbers on the spectral shape under conditions where modifications introduced by line mixing are important. For high rotational quantum number lines, the main features induced by collisions are predicted but some discrepancies remain; the latter may be due to improper line-coupling elements but there is strong evidence that the use of inaccurate line broadening parameters also contributes to errors in calculated spectra. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract

The intensities and foreign gas broadening coefficients of 57 selected lines of the ν 4 band of NH 3 have been measured in the region of 1550 cm -1 using a high resolution Brucker Fourier transform spectrometer. The line intensities were obtained by using the methods of absorbance at the line center and by fitting Voigt profiles to the measured shapes of the lines. The latter method also provides the collisional widths of the lines. In addition, collision cross relaxation coefficients of O 2 and air foreign gases were measured for 9 doublets of NH 3 in the ν 4 band. The J and K quantum numbers dependencies of pressure-broadening coefficients and line intensities are discussed. The observed air broadening and cross relaxation coefficients were found to be in reasonable quantitative agreement with the concentration-weighted average of the N 2 and O 2 broadening coefficients. The comparison of our present and previous results obtained for the NH 3 –H 2 , NH 3 –air, NH 3 –N 2 and NH 3 –CO 2 collisions shows an increase of the pressure broadening and cross relaxation coefficients with quadrupole moment of the foreign gas. The analysis of the line intensities was based on the third-order theory of line strengths and yields effective transition moments, vibrational band strengths and correction parameters of the symmetric and antisymmetric partial bands of the fundamental ν 4 band.

D2, Cs, C3v, and C(m)3v commonly used to discuss energy level symmetry species and electric-dipole selection rules for internal rotor problems in molecules with a symmetric rotor top and a frame with a plane of symmetry. paying particular attention to confusion arising from the fact that the smaller groups are not always subgroups of the larger, and the groups are applied to different parts of the internal rotation problem (i.e., D2 to pure rotation, Cs to vibration-rotation, C3v and C(m)3v to torsion-rotation). The meaning in this context of the traditional Ka, Kc labels for rotational energy levels in molecules with internal rotation is examined in detail. A discussion is also given of the relationship between three different schemes for defining a molecule-fixed axis system in internal rotation problems. i.e., the principal axis method, the internal axis method, and a hybrid method referred to here as the "rho axis method," paying particular attention to the meaning of a-type, b-type, and c-type transitions when using each of these axis systems. Some of the above ideas were helpful in adding intensity calculations to our earlier computer program treating internal rotation and overall rotation in acetaldehyde-like molecules, and these intensity calculations are also briefly discussed.
