OBJECTIVE: Most evidence supporting screening for undernutrition is for children aged 6-59 months. However, the highest risk of mortality and highest incidence of wasting occurs in the first 6 months of life. We evaluated relationships between neonatal anthropometric indicators, including birth weight, weight-for-age Z-score (WAZ), weight-for-length Z-score (WLZ), length-for-age Z-score (LAZ) and mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) and mortality and growth at 6 months of age among infants in Burkina Faso. DESIGN: Data arose from a randomised controlled trial evaluating neonatal azithromycin administration for the prevention of child mortality. To explore whether rs2073244 at PAX9 increased susceptibility for full-term low birth weight infants and whether indoors passive smoking exposure has a combined effect with rs2073244 on newborn low birth weight (LBW), a 1:2 paired case–control study of LBW newborns was conducted at Xiamen University Affiliated Women and Children’s Hospital from March 2010 to October 2013. The rate of indoor passive smoking exposure in the LBW group was higher than it in the NBW group (p = 0.019). GG of PAX9 rs2073244 decreased the risk of LBW [OR = 0.38, 95% CI: (0.15-0.98)] and smaller HC [OR = 0.44, 95% CI:(0.20-0.98)]. The relative excess risk for LBW contributed by the additive interaction between the rs2073244 risk genotypes AG/AA and mother pregnancy passive smoking exposure was 10.679 (95%CI 1.728–65.975). Aim Methods Results Conclusion Although vitamin D deficiency in smokers has a greater risk of low birth weight than vitamin D deficiency or smoking alone, there is no study searching birth weight in vitamin D deficient passive smokers. We evaluated the effect of vitamin D deficiency on birth weight in active and passive smokers. Additionally, we aimed to determine the predictive role of vitamin D for low birth weight in smokers.The study was designed as a retrospective case control study. A total of 210 participants were divided into three groups: active smoking (n = 34), passive smoking (n = 79), and non‐smokers (n = 97). Then passive smokers were divided into two subgroups as vitamin D ≥ 20 ng/mL (n = 23) and vitamin D < 20 ng/mL (n = 56). Sociodemographic, laboratory, and perinatal characteristics were recorded and compared between groups.Birth weight was higher in non‐smokers as compared to active (p < 0.001) and passive (p = 0.001) smokers, and also in passive than active smokers (p = 0.023). In passive smokers, birth weight was lower in vitamin D < 20 ng/mL group (p < 0.001). Vitamin D were correlated with birth weight in all smokers (r = 0.653, p < 0.001), passive (r = 0.624, p < 0.001) and active smokers (r = 0.526, p = 0.001). Vitamin D ≤ 14 ng/mL predicted low birth weight with 100% sensitivity and 53.92% specificity in smokers (area under curve [AUC] = 0.773, p < 0.001), with 100% sensitivity and 63.5% specificity in passive smokers (AUC = 0.759, p < 0.001) while vitamin D ≤ 11 ng/mL predicted with 83.33% sensitivity and 71.43% specificity in active smokers (AUC = 0.774, p = 0.008).Vitamin D deficiency in smokers is associated with low birth weight. Although vitamin D supplementation is not routinely recommended in pregnant women, we suggest that it could be an option in preventing low birth weight in smokers, even passive ones, who do not have adequate dietary intake and have insufficient exposure to daylight. Background: A dolutegravir (DTG)-based antiretroviral regimen has been rolled out for pregnant women in low- and middle-income countries since 2020. However, available safety data are limited to a few clinical trials and observational studies. Hence, we present real-world pregnancy and birth outcome safety data from a large sample multicenter cohort study in Ethiopia. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted in fourteen hospitals across Ethiopia from 2017 to 2022. HIV-infected pregnant women were followed from the date of prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) care enrolment until the infant was 6–8 weeks old. The primary safety outcome was a composite of adverse pregnancy events comprising spontaneous abortion, intrauterine fetal death (IUFD) before onset of labor, preterm birth, and maternal death. Additionally, a composite adverse birth outcome was assessed, comprising intrapartum fetal demise, low birth weight, and neonatal death. Finally, a composite of adverse pregnancy or birth outcome was also investigated. The exposure of interest was the antiretroviral treatment (ART) regimen used during pregnancy for PMTCT of HIV. Results: During the study period, 2643 women were enrolled in routine PMTCT care. However, 2490 (92.2%) participants were eligible for the study. A total of 136/1724 (7.9%, 95% CI: 6.7–9.3%) women experienced adverse pregnancy outcomes. Fewer women in the DTG-based group (5.4%, 95% CI: 3.7–7.5%) had adverse pregnancy outcomes than in the Efavirenz (EFV)-based group (8.3%, 95% CI: 6.6–10.3%), P = 0.004. After controlling for baseline differences, the DTG group had a 43% lower risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes (adjusted odd ratio (AOR), 0.57; 95% CI, 0.32–0.96%) and a 53% lower risk of preterm birth (AOR, 0.47; 95% CI, 0.22–0.98%) compared to the EFV group. A total of 103/1616 (6.4%, 95% CI: 5.2–7.7%) women had adverse birth outcomes. Although the difference was not statistically significant, fewer women in the DTG group (30/548; 5.5%, 95% CI: 3.7–7.7%) than in the EFV group (57/830; 6.9%, 95% CI: 5.2–8.8%) had adverse birth outcomes. Conclusions: In this study, we observed that DTG-based regimens were associated with better pregnancy and birth outcome safety profiles, reaffirming the WHO recommendation. However, a prospective study is recommended to assess uncaptured maternal and perinatal adverse outcomes, such as congenital abnormalities, and infant growth and neurocognitive development. Poor placental angiogenesis is associated with several pregnancy complications including fetal growth restriction (FGR), which causes low birth weight (LBW) babies to have a high risk of growth disorders and metabolic disorders in adulthood. Recent research using syncytin knock-out mice showed significant disruption in the growth of placental vascularization. Syncytin-1 which encoded by ERVW-1 gene, is proposed to have a role in placental angiogenesis, but its relationship with other proangiogenic factors such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in the placenta of LBW babies has not yet been determined. By knowing the mechanisms of FGR, more proactive preventive and therapeutic measures can be taken in the future. This study aimed to determine the expression of ERVW-1 , proangiogenic gene VEGF and its receptor (FLT-1), and hypoxia inducible factor-1 (HIF-1) in LBW placentas, and investigate the relationship between these genes' expression in the placenta of LBW babies. Total RNA was extracted from placental tissue. Total RNA is used as a cDNA synthesis template, followed by qRT-PCR. Correlations of ERVW-1, VEGF, FLT-1 and HIF-1 genes' expression were analyzed by linear regression. The age and body mass index of mothers with LBW and normal birth weight (NBW) babies were not significantly different. ERVW-1 expression in LBW placentas was lower than in NBW placentas, but VEGF, FLT-1 and HIF-1 expressions were higher. ERVW-1 was negatively correlated with HIF-1 and VEGF. Background: The incidence of chronic diseases, which are significant contributors to maternal deaths and adverse new-born outcomes, is increasing among women of reproductive age in northern Ghana. This emerging health issue raises serious concerns about the potential exacerbation of adverse birth outcomes in this setting, given that it is one of the regions in the country with a high incidence of such outcomes. We investigated the risks of preterm birth (PTB), low birth weight (LBW), and concurrent PTB and LBW among women with preexisting chronic conditions prior to conception in the Tamale Metropolis of northern Ghana. Methods: A facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 420 postpartum women randomly selected from five public health facilities. Information was collected electronically on participants' self-reported experience of chronic conditions, namely, hypertension, diabetes, asthma, heart disease, and sickle cell disease, prior to their most recent pregnancy. Information on gestational age at delivery and birth weight was also collected. Regression modeling was used to quantify the risk of adverse newborn outcomes among women who reported preexisting chronic conditions prior to pregnancy. Results: Chronic diseases affected 31.2% of our sample. Of these, 28.6% had a single chronic condition, while 2.6% had comorbid chronic conditions. The prevalence of PTB was 24.0% (95% CI: 20.2, 28.4), 27.6% (95% CI: 23.5, 32.1) of the newborns were born LBW, and 17.4% (95% CI: 14.0, 21.3) of the pregnancies resulted in both PTB and LBW. Compared with those without chronic conditions, women with chronic conditions prior to conception had a greater risk of PTB (aOR = 6.78, 95% CI: 3.36, 13.68), LBW (aOR = 5.75, 95% CI: 2.96, 11.18), and the co-occurrence of PTB and LBW (aOR = 7.55, 95% CI: 3.32, 17.18). Conclusions: We observed significant rates of PTB, LBW, and the co-occurrence of PTB and LBW among women who were already aware that they had preexisting chronic conditions prior to conception. Our findings highlight a potential gap in the quality of prenatal care provided to these women before delivery. Background: The maternal lipid profile has been increasingly recognized as a significant factor influencing pregnancy outcomes. Dyslipidemia during pregnancy can have adverse effects on both the mother and the fetus, potentially leading to complications such as preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, preterm delivery, and fetal growth restrictions. Understanding the relationship between maternal lipid levels and adverse pregnancy outcomes is crucial for developing strategies to improve maternal and fetal health. In this retrospective cohort study, we compared neonatal and maternal outcomes after exposure of different psychopharmacological classes of drugs. Both psychiatric diseases and pharmacological treatment of these are associated with lower birth weights, lower APGAR scores, and NICU admission. Therefore, we tried to rule out the role of psychotropics as if no differences were found between pharmacological classes, the lower birthweights might not be attributable to these. We divided our groups in exposed to atypical antipsychotic drugs, Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI), Tricyclic Antidepressants (TCA), benzodiazepines, and different combinations of psychotropic drugs. The last group included SSRIs combined with benzodiazepines, methylphenidate, lithium, and classic antipsychotic drugs. We used univariate regression analysis to see which factors from our rich dataset including pharmacological class, are associated with birth weight, APGAR scores, gestational age, and NICU admission. The significant associations from univariate analyses were further analyzed using ancova analysis or logistic regression where applicable. We found no clinically relevant differences in neonatal and maternal outcomes between the different exposed pharmacological classes. Objective Late-onset sepsis (LOS) is a major public health burden globally. Newborns with very low birth weight (VLBW) are at high risk of mortality related to LOS. The protective effect of breast milk feeding against many infections has been studied but data on the effect of breast milk feeding on LOS mortality are limited. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the risk factors for LOS-related mortality. Methods This single-center, case–control study was conducted retrospectively from August 2013 to July 2018. VLBW newborns with ≤32 weeks of gestational age who had culture-proven LOS were included in the study. Demographics, clinical and laboratory data, and parenteral and enteral feeding details within 72 hours before LOS episodes were extracted from electronic and paper medical records. Results A total of 190 LOS episodes were identified in 168 VLBW newborns with a median birth weight of 888 (695–1,143) g. Lower birth weight (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 0.81, 95% confidence interval [CI] [0.69–0.96], p = 0.01), C-section delivery (aOR 0.38, 95% CI [0.17–0.84], p = 0.02), gram-negative (aOR 4.97, 95% CI [2.01–12.28], p = 0.001) and polymicrobial sepsis (aOR 6.29, 95% CI [1.34–29.47], p = 0.03), and lower breast milk feeding 72 hours before LOS episodes (aOR 0.89, 95% CI [0.80–0.99], p = 0.03) were independently associated with higher odds of LOS related death. Conclusion Gram-negative sepsis was associated with higher odds of LOS mortality and C-section delivery was associated with lower odds of LOS mortality. Additionally, every 10 mL/kg/day increase in breast milk feeding was associated with 11% lower odds of LOS mortality although this finding should be interpreted cautiously as there may be unadjusted confounders due to the study design. Objective: To determine and compare pregnancy outcomes after bilateral uterine artery ligation (BUAL) or bilateral hypogastric artery ligation (BHAL) for postpartum hemorrhage (PPH). Material and Methods: This retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted from January 2010 to June 2018 at a tertiary referral hospital. Patients who had undergone arterial ligation for PPH were included in the study. Patients who had undergone BUAL and BHAL were compared with a control group in terms of fertility and pregnancy outcomes. Results: A total of 156 patients were included, of whom 47 underwent BUAl, 59 underwent BHAL and 50 were in the control group. There was no significant difference between the groups in subsequent pregnancies in terms of the incidence of miscarriage, fetal growth restriction, preeclampsia, primary cesarean deliveries, and infertility (p>0.05). There was a significant difference between all groups in gestational age at birth and birthweight. Preterm birth was observed in 32.2% of patients in the BHAL group, and this rate was significantly higher than in the BUAL (12.8%) and control (6%) groups (p=0.001). Conclusion: PPH is a life-threatening obstetric problem. The effects of interventions performed to reduce pelvic blood flow in patients may lead to persistent problems, such as preterm birth and low birth weight in the next pregnancy. However, these interventions do not appear to affect the risk of miscarriage. In subsequent pregnancies of patients who received BHAL, special attention should be paid to preterm birth. Purpose: Ebstein anomaly (EA) and tricuspid valve dysplasia (TVD) represent uncommon congenital malformations of the tricuspid valve. The purpose of this study is to report on current perinatal outcomes of EA/TVD in our center and to investigate clinical and fetal echocardiographic predictors of perinatal mortality. Methods and Results: We performed a retrospective study among fetuses diagnosed from January 2014 to December 2023. Clinical and echocardiographic data were obtained from hospital records of Research and Education Hospital. The primary outcome was perinatal mortality. Of 21 fetuses diagnosed, there were 1 lost to follow-up, 1 termination, and 7 demises. In the live-born cohort of 12 live-born patients, 2 died before discharge, yielding an overall perinatal mortality of 50%. The median gestational age at diagnosis was 23 for non-survivors and 24 weeks for survivors. Birth weight was lower in non-survivors (2430 g vs 2990 g). Tricuspid insufficiency severity varied insignificantly. Non-survivors exhibited higher rates of hydrops, functional atresia, and absent antegrade flow (p < 0.05). Two infants with severe tricuspid insufficiency and congenital abnormalities died postnatally. The limited dataset enables further analysis for a predictive model. Notably, all non-survivors displayed hydrops, functional atresia, and absent antegrade flow, hindering definitive determination of the most impactful parameter on survival estimation. Conclusion: Perinatal mortality remains notably elevated in fetuses with EA/TVD. The individuals at the highest risk are those with antegrade flow loss and functional atresia of pulmonary valve, this high-risk subgroup could benefit from targeted interventions, such as novel prenatal therapies or a more comprehensive perinatal approach involving optimized timing of delivery and postnatal interventional strategies. Purpose: To investigate perinatal outcomes and long-term infectious morbidity in children of mothers with familial Mediterranean fever (FMF). Methods: A population-based cohort study comparing perinatal outcomes and long-term infectious morbidity of offspring of mothers with and without FMF was conducted. All singleton deliveries between the years 1991–2021 in a tertiary medical center were included. The study groups were followed until 18 years of age for long-term infectious morbidity. A Kaplan–Meier survival curve was used to compare the cumulative incidence of long-term infectious morbidity, and generalized estimation equation (GEE) models as well as Cox proportional hazards models were constructed to control for confounders. Results: During the study period, 356,356 deliveries met the inclusion criteria. 411 of them were women with FMF. The mean follow-up period interval was 9.7 years (SD = 6.2) in both study groups. Using GEE models, preterm delivery, cesarean delivery, and low birth weight were independently associated with maternal FMF. The total infectious-related hospitalization rate was significantly higher in offspring born to mothers with FMF compared to the comparison group (Kaplan–Meier survival curve, log-rank p < 0.001). Using a Cox proportional hazards model, controlling for gestational age, maternal age, diabetes mellitus, cesarean delivery, and hypertensive disorders, being born to a mother with FMF was found to be an independent risk factor for long-term infection-related hospitalization of the offspring. Conclusion: Maternal FMF was found to be independently associated with long-term infection-related hospitalization of the offspring. This positive correlation may reflect an intra-uterine pro-inflammatory environment which may result in the offspring's long-term susceptibility to infection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the rate of Mother-to-child-transmission (MTCT) in women living with HIV (WLWH) in a tertiary care institution. Furthermore, we aimed to assess prenatal ultrasound screening for fetal anomalies and outcomes in high-risk pregnancies due to maternal HIV infection." Methods: In this single-center study, retrospective data related to pregnancy and childbirth were collected from 420 WLWH. All data were evaluated descriptively. Results: From January 2014 to December 2020, a total number of 420 pregnant WLWH delivered 428 newborns. 415 (98.8%) were receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) and 88.8% had a viral load of < 50 cop/ml prior delivery. 46 (11%) of the newborns were born prematurely. Low birth weight < 2500 g occurred in 38 (9.1%) of the children. 219 (52.1%) caesarean sections (CS) were performed. The most frequent indication for an elective CS was a previous CS (70.2%). 8 severe malformations were detected using first and second trimester ultrasound. In one child, MTCT was detected postpartum, resulting in an HIV transmission rate of 0.2% in the presented cohort. Conclusions: The low rate of vertical HIV-transmission in our cohort of 0.2% is the result of interdisciplinary prenatal care and high experience of healthcare providers in treatment of WLWH. Despite high ART coverage and adherence, good maternal immune system and very low vertical HIV transmission rate, maternal HIV infection remains a challenge in obstetric care. First and second ultrasound screening should be a part of prenatal care for HIV-infected women and should also be offered to HIV-negative women. A systematic review and meta-analysis found that approximately one fifth of survivors of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) develop cerebral palsy (CP), even in cases of mild HIE. HIV-exposed infants have inferior neurobehavioral functioning, which may affect their quality of life and ability to develop relationships. Daycare attendance has a positive impact on language development in preterm children, particularly among firstborn and children with low maternal education. Early shared reading, improved attendance rates at NICU follow-up programs, and screenings for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are effective interventions for preterm children. Neighborhood characteristics can influence cognitive outcomes in infants with HIE, highlighting the need for targeted interventions. Implementing parental reading practices in the NICU promotes bonding and neurodevelopment in preterm infants. To evaluate differences in reproductive and neonatal outcomes on the basis of the time interval from cesarean delivery to subsequent frozen embryo transfer (FET). Retrospective cohort. Multicenter fertility practice. Women undergoing autologous elective single embryo transfer FET after prior cesarean delivery. Time from prior cesarean delivery to subsequent FET. live birth (LB). A total of 6,556 autologous elective single embryo transfer FET cycles were included. Frozen embryo transfer cycles were divided into eight groups on the basis of the time interval from prior cesarean delivery to subsequent FET in months. A secondary analysis was then performed with time as a continuous variable. The proportion of LBs did not differ significantly across all time interval groups and over continuous time (range: 40.0%–45.6%). The mean gestational age at the time of delivery did not significantly differ as the time between prior cesarean delivery and subsequent FET increased (range: 37.3–38.4). When time was evaluated continuously, the proportion of preterm births was higher with a shorter time between cesarean delivery and subsequent FET. The mean birth weight ranged from 3,181–3,470g, with a statistically significant increase over time. However, the proportions of extremely low birth weight, very low birth weight, and low birth weight did not significantly differ. There were no significant differences in reproductive outcomes on the basis of the time interval from cesarean delivery to FET, including LB. The proportion of preterm deliveries decreased with a longer time between cesarean delivery and FET. Differences in mean neonatal birth weight were not clinically significant because the proportion of low birth weight neonates was not significantly different over time. Although large, this sample cannot address all outcomes associated with short interpregnancy intervals, particularly rarer outcomes such as uterine rupture. Introduction: Reactance inversion (RI) has been associated with impaired peripheral airway function in persistent asthma. However, there is little to no data about the difference between asthmatic children with and without RI. This study aimed to detect clinical and lung function differences in moderate-severe asthmatic children with and without RI. Methods: This study was conducted between 2021 and 2022 in asthmatic school-age children. Impulse oscillometry (IOS) and spirometry were performed according to ATS/ERS standards. Results: A total of 62 patients, with a mean age of 8.4 years, 54.8% were males and were divided into three groups: group 1 (32.3%) with no RI, group 2 (27.4%) with RI but disappearing after bronchodilator test and group 3 (40.3%) with persistent RI after bronchodilator test. Children in groups 2 and 3 had significantly lower birth weights than in group 1. Group 2 had lower gestational age compared to group 1. FEV1 and FEF25-75 of forced vital capacity were significantly lower in groups 2 and 3. In group 3, R5, AX, R5-20, and R5-R20/R5 ratios were significantly higher. Bronchodilator responses (BDR) in X5c, AX, and R5-R20 were significantly different between groups and lower in group 3. Conclusion: RI is frequently found in children with moderate-severe persistent asthma, particularly in those with a history of prematurity or low birth weight. Objectives: The primary objective of this prospective cohort study was to assess the usefulness of a predefined multidisciplinary care pathway-based management on pregnancy outcome(s) in women with SLE who already had at least one adverse obstetric outcome(s). Methods: Between March 2010 and March 2023, all consecutive, consenting women with SLE who already had at least one previous adverse obstetric outcome (preterm labour, pre-eclampsia, termination of pregnancy, miscarriage, intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR), preterm birth, low birth weight (LBW), intrauterine death (IUD) or stillbirth] were prospectively screened and counselled. The protocol comprised preconception and post-natal drug and disease status review, periodic ante-natal visits for the monitoring of pregnancy and drug and disease status review and post-natal drug and disease status review and contraception advice. Therapeutic changes were made as necessary at each visit. Results: A total of 213 women were screened and 197 women (age, 28 ± 6.34 years) were enrolled who had 226 pregnancies. Previous poor obstetric outcomes were miscarriage(s), 186; termination of pregnancy, 4; preterm labour, 51; IUGR, 36; IUD or stillbirth, 16; low birth weight (LBW), 44 and pre-eclampsia, 4. Seventy-seven (39%) women had secondary APS and 37 (19%) had a history of lupus nephritis. There were 194/226 (86%) live births [40 LBW (18%); caesarean section in 101 (45%)]. Thirty pregnancies culminated in miscarriages and 2 in IUDs (14%). Sixty-eight patients (30%) experienced lupus flare during pregnancy (36 mild, 20 moderate and 8 severe). Conclusion: Our experience underscores the usefulness of a predefined multidisciplinary care pathway-based management for improving pregnancy outcomes in women with SLE who had previous adverse outcomes. Background: This study aimed to analyze the results, feasibility and safety of the thoracoscopic approach for patients with esophageal atresia with tracheoesophageal fistula (EA/TEF) depending on the patient's birth weight. Methods: The study involved only type C and D EA/TEF. Among the analyzed parameters were the patients' characteristics, surgical treatment and post-operative complications: early mortality, anastomosis leakage, anastomosis strictures, chylothorax, TEF recurrence, and the need for fundoplication or gastrostomy. Results: 145 consecutive newborns underwent thoracoscopic EA with TEF repair. They were divided into three groups—A (N = 12 with a birth weight < 1500 g), B (N = 23 with a birth weight ≥ 1500 g but < 2000 g), and C—control group (N = 110 with a birth weight ≥ 2000 g). Primary one-stage anastomosis was performed in 11/12 (91.7%) patients—group A, 19/23 (82.6%)—group B and 110 (100%)—group C. Early mortality was 3/12 (25%)—group A, 2/23 (8.7%)—group B, and 2/110 (1.8%)—group C and was not directly related to the surgical repair. There were no significant differences in operative time and the following complications: anastomotic leakage, recurrent TEF, esophageal strictures, and chylothorax. There were no conversions to an open surgery. Fundoplication was required in 0%—group A, 4/21 (19.0%)—group B, and 2/108 (1.9%)—group C survivors. Gastrostomy was performed in 1/9 (11.1%)—group A, 3/21 (14.3%)—group B and 0%—group C. Conclusion: In an experienced surgeon's hands, even in the smallest newborns, the thoracoscopic approach may be safe, feasible, and worthy of consideration. Background: Soil-transmitted helminth infections (STHs) in pregnancy have been linked to maternal anemia, low birth weight, and adverse perinatal outcomes. STH includes Ascaris lumbricoides, hookworm, and Trichuris trichiura. However, conflicting evidence exists regarding these effects. Hence, we aimed to assess the association of STH infections with perinatal outcomes. Methods and Materials: A community-based cohort study was conducted among pregnant women in primary care settings in Puducherry, South India, during December 2019 to April 2021. Stool samples were collected for STH screening and confirmed using polymerase chain reaction. Information on perinatal outcomes and hemoglobin levels were extracted from case records. The association of pre-term birth, low birth weight, anemia, and miscarriages with STH infection was analyzed using the Chi-square test. Results: Among the 650 women enrolled, 58 (8.9%) had one of the STH infections. At the time of recruitment, 336 (52.0%) women had anemia. Twenty-four women (3.7%) had miscarriages, 14 (2.2%) had pre-term birth, and 65 (10.4%) had low-birth-weight (LBW) babies. All 14 pre-term babies had LBW, and out of 65 LBW, 40 were in mothers with anemia. Incidence of LBW, pre-term deliveries, and anemia were higher in women with STH than in those without STH (LBW: 12.3% vs 10.2%, P = 0.62; pre-term: 3.5% vs 2.1%, P = 0.5; and anemia: 54.4% vs 51.85, P = 0.7). Conclusion: Though the incidence of anemia, LBW, and pre-term delivery was higher in women with STH infections compared to those without STH, we did not find any significant association between the presence of STH infections and perinatal outcomes. Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a vasoproliferative retinal disease in preterm infants. Oxidative stress plays a key role in the pathogenesis of ROP. Due to its antioxidant effects, bilirubin has been proposed to be protective against ROP. This study explored the association between hyperbilirubinemia and ROP. We analyzed a 10-year cohort from a neonatal intensive care unit in Milan, Italy, including 1606 infants born under 32 weeks and/or < 1500 g. Data from 1606 infants meeting specific inclusion criteria were reviewed. Eighty infants were excluded due to lack of data, 1526 were deemed eligible for analysis, and 1269 had hyperbilirubinemia requiring phototherapy. There was a higher incidence of ROP among infants with hyperbilirubinemia (13.8%) versus those without (7.8%, p<0.01). Infants with any ROP, non-severe or severe ROP, were exposed to hyperbilirubinemia for a significantly higher number of days compared with those without ROP. Each additional day of exposure increases the risk of developing any ROP by 5%, non-severe ROP by 4%, and severe ROP by 6%. However, this correlation was not observed in infants with gestational age less than 27 weeks and/or body weight less than 1000 g. Conclusion: Our data show that hyperbilirubinemia requiring phototherapy is associated with an increased risk of developing ROP. However, severe hyperbilirubinemia and ROP share many of their risk factors. Therefore, rather than being a risk factor itself, hyperbilirubinemia may be a surrogate for other risk factors for ROP. Residential exposure to greenness has shown positive influences on pregnancy outcomes like birth weight, preterm births, and small to gestational age (SGA) deliveries. We aimed to comprehensively review and investigate these associations by conducting a systematic review with meta-analysis. Relevant studies were retrieved from PubMed, EMBASE, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar databases before June 2023. Summary effect estimates included birth weight, low birth weight (LBW), preterm births, and SGA which were calculated for 0.1 unit increase in residential greenness exposure. Overall quality of the evidence was examined through Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) critical appraisal tool. The review included 31 articles and found a statistically significant increase in birth weight measured at 250 m buffer distance (β = 8.95, 95% CI = 1.63–16.27). Green spaces were also associated with lower odds of LBW (OR = 0.97, 95% CI = 0.96–0.98). Objective: To determine if there is a correlation between maternal short stature and neonatal birth weight among women with adverse outcomes related to labor dystocia. Methods: The medical records of singleton deliveries with adverse obstetric outcomes related to labor dystocia during 2014–2020, in a single tertiary center, were reviewed. Outcomes included at least one of the following: cesarean delivery (CD) due to cephalopelvic disproportion (CPD), prolonged second stage, shoulder dystocia, third‐ or fourth‐degree perineal tear. Maternal short stature was defined as height below the 10th centile (short stature group) and normal stature was defined as maternal height between the 10th and 90th centiles (normal stature group). Maternal and neonatal characteristics were compared between the groups. Results: A total of 3295 women were included, among them, 307 in the short stature group (9.3%, height 1.52 ± 0.02 m) and 2988 in the normal stature group (90.7%, height 1.63 ± 0.04 m). Evaluating the entire cohort revealed similar neonatal birth weights comparing the short and normal stature groups. A subgroup analysis of women after CD due to CPD (n = 296) revealed lower neonatal birth weights in the short stature group (n = 31) compared with the normal stature group (n = 265) (3215 ± 411 vs 3484 ± 427 g, P = 0.001, respectively). Multivariable linear regression was performed for women who underwent CD due to CPD. After adjusting for obesity and diabetes mellitus, short stature and nulliparity were found to be independently associated with decreased neonatal birth weight (266 g less for short stature, P = 0.001, and 294 g less for nulliparity, P = 0.001). Conclusions: Among women with short stature, CD due to CPD occurs at lower neonatal birth weights. Purpose: Suicide attempts (SA) during perinatal period have the potential to adversely affect a woman's health and her developing infant. To date, little is known about perinatal SA and their risk factors. This study aimed to synthetize the evidence on risk factors of SA in pregnant and postpartum women. Methods: We systematically reviewed studies retrieved from PubMed/Medline, PsycINFO, and CINAHL, following the PRISMA guidelines for reporting. A meta-analysis was conducted only for risk factors examined in at least three distinct samples. Results: A total of ten studies were eligible for inclusion. All the studies found significant associations in regression models between perinatal SA and other variables (sociodemographic, clinical factors obstetric, neonatal, and psychosocial). The meta-analysis showed that unmarried women (pooled OR = 1.87, 95% CI = 1.26–2.78), with no higher education (pooled OR = 1.89, 95% CI = 1.31–2.74) and affected by a mood disorder (pooled OR = 11.43, 95% CI = 1.56–83.87) have a higher risk of postpartum SA; women who smoke during pregnancy (pooled OR = 3.87, 95% CI = 1.35–11.11) have a higher risk of SA in pregnancy; and women with previous suicidal behavior(pooled OR = 38.04, 95% CI = 3.36–431.17) have a higher risk of perinatal SA, whether during pregnancy or in the postpartum period. The type of sample, whether community or clinical, is a relevant moderating factor. Conclusion: Our study extends prior reviews about suicidal behaviors in women by studying perinatal suicide attempts independently, as well as it synthesized data on some sociodemographic, clinical, and obstetric/neonatal risk factors. Introduction: Anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAr) antibody encephalitis is an autoimmune disorder characterized by synaptic NMDAr current disruption and receptor hypofunction, often affecting women during pregnancy. Clinical manifestations associated with anti-NMDAr encephalitis can occur both in the mother and fetus. Methods: We generated a systematic search of the literature to identify epidemiological, clinical, and serological data related to pregnant women with anti-NMDAr encephalitis and their children, analyzing the fetal outcomes. We examined the age and neurologic symptoms of the mothers, the presence of an underlying tumor, immunotherapies used during pregnancy, duration of the pregnancy, and type of delivery. Results: Data from 41 patients were extrapolated from the included studies. Spontaneous interruption of pregnancy, premature birth, and cesarean section were reported in pregnant women with NMDAr encephalitis. Several fetal and neonatal symptoms (e.g., movement disorders, spina bifida, poor sucking, respiratory distress, cardiac arrhythmias, infections, icterus, hypoglycemia, and low birth weight) depending on the mother's serum anti-NR1 concentration were also reported. Conclusions: We characterized the outcomes of children born from mothers with anti-NMDAr encephalitis, analyzing the pivotal risk factors related to pregnancy and maternal disorder. Neuropsychiatric involvement seems strictly related to pathogenic NMDAr antibodies detected in maternal and/or neonatal serum. These findings clarify a complex condition to manage, outlining the risks associated with pregnant women with anti-NMDAr encephalitis and also providing a concrete guide for therapeutic strategies to prevent potential harm to the fetus and the child's neurodevelopment. Prematurity has physical consequences, such as lower birth weight, decreased muscle mass and increased risk of adult‐onset metabolic disease. Insulin‐like growth factor 1 (IGF‐1) has therapeutic potential to improve the growth and quality of muscle and tendon in premature births, and thus attenuate some of these sequalae. We investigated the effect of IGF‐1 on extensor carpi radialis muscle and biceps brachii tendon of preterm piglets. The preterm group consisted of 19‐day‐old preterm (10 days early) piglets, treated with either IGF‐1 or vehicle. Term controls consisted of groups of 9‐day‐old piglets (D9) and 19‐day‐old piglets (D19). Muscle samples were analysed by immunofluorescence to determine the cross‐sectional area (CSA) of muscle fibres, fibre type composition, satellite cell content and central nuclei‐containing fibres in the muscle. Tendon samples were analysed for CSA, collagen content and maturation, and vascularization. Gene expression of the tendon was measured by RT‐qPCR. Across all endpoints, we found no significant effect of IGF‐1 treatment on preterm piglets. Preterm piglets had smaller muscle fibre CSA compared to D9 and D19 control group. Satellite cell content was similar across all groups. For tendon, we found an effect of age on tendon CSA, and mRNA levels of COL1A1, tenomodulin and scleraxis. Immunoreactivity for elastin and CD31, and several markers of tendon maturation, were increased in D9 compared to the preterm piglets. Collagen content was similar across groups. IGF‐1 treatment of preterm‐born piglets does not influence the growth and maturation of skeletal muscle and tendon. This study aimed to estimate (co)variance components and genetic parameters for calving ease (CE) and their genetic correlations with growth, reproductive, carcass, and feed efficiency traits in Nellore cattle. Phenotypes for CE are scored in two categories: normal calving and assisted calving. The traits considered were probability of precocious calving, age at first calving, stayability, adjusted scrotal circumference at 365 days of age, accumulated cow productivity, age at puberty of males, gestation length, birth weight, adjusted weights at 210 and 450 days of age, adult cow weight, frame score, hip height, rib eye area, subcutaneous backfat thickness, rump fat thickness, intramuscular fat percentage, residual feed intake and dry matter intake. The estimation of genetic parameters was performed using a two‐trait threshold‐linear animal model, except for CE, stayability, and probability of precocious calving, which were evaluated through a two‐trait threshold animal model. The direct (0.27) and maternal (0.19) heritability estimates for CE in heifers primiparous Nellore indicated that selecting for this trait is feasible. The selection to improve the female sexual precocity should consider CE during the selection and mating decisions to reduce calving problems. Genetic correlation estimates between CE and BW suggest that selecting low birth weight to reduce calving problems is not an appropriate strategy to improve calving ease in heifers Nellore. Therefore, adopting a multi‐trait selection model with CE and BW in the Nellore breed would reduce calving difficulties, particularly in sexually precocious heifers, without impairing the growth, reproductive, feed efficiency conversion, and carcass indicator traits. The objective was to analyze the spatial distribution of pregnancy in children under 14 years and six months by Brazilian region and municipality and sociodemographic and health characteristics of pregnant women and live births. Ecological study analyzing the Live Birth Information System (SINASC) from 2011 to 2021 in three age groups (< 14 years and six months, 15-19 years, and 20 years and above) by demographic and birth variables. We applied the Global and Local Moran. A total of 127,022 live births to girls aged 10-14 years were identified during the period, most of whom were Black, 21.1% in common-law or married relationships, with a lower proportion of seven prenatal care appointments and enrollment in the first trimester, a higher proportion of low birth weight and low Apgar score, residing in the North and Northeast. The mean live birth rate for 10-to-14-year-old girls was significantly autocorrelated with space, especially in municipalities of the Midwest and North. Pregnancy from 10 to 14 years of age reveals several vulnerabilities suffered by these girls due to pregnancy at an early age, which is more common among Black women, with implications for morbimortality for them and their children and the presumed violence in these cases, including denied access to legal abortion. Background Limited research has explored the impact of mosquito repellents exposure during early life on ADHD symptoms. This study aimed to explore the associations of exposure to mosquito repellents from pregnancy to 3 years old and the prevalence of ADHD-like behaviours among children aged 3–9 years, and further identify the sensitive exposure period. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted, including 12 275 children in Hefei City, China. Exposure was self-reported via primary caregivers. ADHD-like behaviours were measured by the Swanson, Nolan and Pelham, version IV scale (SNAP-IV), and Conners' Parent Rating Scale (CPRS). Cross-over analysis, binary logistic regression and linear regression were employed. Results After adjusting for confounding variables, early-life exposure to mosquito repellents was associated with a higher risk of ADHD-like behaviours (OR = 1.81, 95% CI = 1.49–2.19). By comparing the strength of the association for each subgroup, we found exposure during 1–3 years old was a sensitive period (OR = 1.89, 95% CI = 1.25–2.87) by the cross-over analysis. Furthermore, we found a dose–response relationship in which the likelihood of ADHD-like behaviours increased with children's early-life mosquito repellents exposure dose. Conclusions Early-life exposure to mosquito repellents is linked with an elevated risk of ADHD-like behaviours in children, with a sensitive period identified during 1–3 years old. This article discusses a study on the effects of metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) on neonatal birth weight in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and high body mass index (BMI). The study found that the length of pregnancy was the only factor associated with newborn weight, regardless of PCOS status. Factors such as weight gain during pregnancy and nutritional variables did not have a significant effect on newborn weight. Objectives: To establish neonatal pain management practices as an essential developmental supportive measure at a tertiary care unit. Methods: This quality improvement initiative was conducted as per Point-of-Care-Quality-Improvement Model over 6 mo, followed by 2 y of sustenance phase at a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in northern India. Infants of birth weight ≤1800 g were included and assessed for pain. Pain Assessment and Management Practices via Education and Reinforcement (PAMPER) group was created by resident doctors and nursing staff. The Premature Infant Pain Profile score was used for the assessment of pain. Limiting factors were analyzed using a fishbone diagram and interventions were done in multiple Plan-Do-Study-Act cycles. Results: At the end of interventions, 100% of procedures were assessed for pain. The mean (standard deviation) documented pain score for the first seven days was reduced from 12.8 (0.3) in the baseline phase to 7 (2.5). These interventions helped to sustain the practice in >70% of infants in the next 2 y. Conclusions: Low-cost interventions improved the pain assessment and management policy of authors' NICU with the establishment of a standard protocol. Background: Maternal nutritional status before and during pregnancy is an important determinant of foetal health. In West Africa, maternal and child undernutrition remains a major public health problem and it is important to establish the mechanistic pathway linking the two disorders to help address the problem. We therefore assessed the mediating role of low birth weight (LBW) in the relationship of maternal undernutrition with child undernutrition in West Africa. Methods: We included recent (2010–2019) DHS data from thirteen West African countries. Poisson regression model with robust standard errors was used to assess the relationship between maternal undernutrition (body mass index and anaemia) and child undernutrition (stunting, wasting, underweight, and anaemia). Structural equation modelling was used to conduct the mediation analysis. Results: Prevalence of stunting, wasting, underweight, and anaemia among under-five children in West Africa was found to be 32.4%, 8.1%, 20.1%, and 71.5%, respectively. We found children of underweight mothers to be more likely to be undernourished (stunted, wasted, and underweight) and anaemic compared to children of normal-weight mothers. Also, children of anaemic mothers were more likely to be stunted and anaemic but not wasted compared with children of non-anaemic mothers. LBW mediated the observed relationships between maternal BMI and childhood stunting (22.6%), and maternal anaemia and childhood stunting (24.9%), wasting (11.7), and anaemia (6.6%). Conclusion: We found maternal undernutrition to be associated with child undernutrition in West Africa with LBW noted to be a mediator of the observed relationship. We recommend that, to address the child undernutrition problem in West Africa, governments and policymakers must integrate measures to address the burden of LBW. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: This study aims to examine risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes and mothers' characteristics in patients with chronic hypertension, gestational hypertension and preeclampsia. Methods: The study included all births born from women aged 15–45 years, in Lleida, Spain from 2012 to 2018. Pregnancy outcomes were retrieved by regional administrative databases. Logistic regression analysis was used to calculate adjusted odds ratios (OR) (OR 95% CI) for maternal characteristics or neonatal outcomes. Results: Among 17,177 pregnant women, different types of hypertension present varying risks for both the mother and fetus. There is an increased risk of cesarean section in patients with preeclampsia (OR 2.04, 95% CI: 1.43–2.88). For the newborn, a higher risk of preterm birth is associated with maternal chronic hypertension (OR 3.09, 95% CI: 1.91–4.83) and preeclampsia (OR 5.07, 95% CI: 3.28–7.65). Additionally, there is a higher risk of low birth weight in cases of maternal chronic hypertension (OR 3.2, 95% CI: 2.04–4.88), preeclampsia (OR 5.07, 95% CI: 3.34–7.52), and gestational hypertension (OR 2.72, 95% CI: 1.49–4.68). Furthermore, only newborns of patients with preeclampsia had a higher risk of an Apgar score lower than 7 in the first minute (OR 2.95, 95% CI: 1.45–5.38). Conclusions: In the study population adjusted for body weight, the different types of hypertension represent different risks in the mother and foetus. Objective: We aimed to evaluate the heterogeneity of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) patients diagnosed with various screening criteria. Methods: We stratified pregnant women using consecutive fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and 2-hour postprandial plasma glucose (2hPPG) intervals of 0.2 mmol/L. The incidence of abnormal neonatal birthweight and birth-related adverse outcomes was compared with that of pregnant women without GDM. Results: The study included 39,988 pregnant women (18–45 years, mean [SD], 31.5 [4.7] years) in Ningbo, China. The means (SDs) of FPG and 2hPPG within 24–28 weeks of gestation were 4.5 (0.5) and 6.8 (1.3) mmol/L, respectively. A total of 3025 (7.6%) women had 5.1–6.9 mmol/L FPG and 4560 (11.4%) had 8.5–11.0 mmol/L 2hPPG. The incidence of GDM according to the two combination criteria was 17.3% (6908 cases). The relative risk (RR) for < 10th percentile birthweight (< 10th WT) was 0.82 (95% CI, 0.74–0.91, p < 0.001) by 5.1 mmol/L FPG criterion and 1.14 (95% CI, 1.06–1.23, p < 0.001) by 8.5 mmol/L 2hPPG criterion, while the RRs for > 90th percentile birthweight (> 90th WT) were 1.48 (95% CI, 1.35–1.63, p < 0.001) and 0.95 (95% CI, 0.86–1.04, p = 0.29) according to the corresponding criteria. The FPG criterion was more strongly associated with maternal hypertension than the 2hPPG criterion. Both criteria did not show a distinct association with other composite adverse outcomes. Conclusion: High FPG is significantly associated with high birth weight, whereas high 2hPPG is slightly associated with low birth weight. Age plays a significant role in the decline of fertility. However, we know very little about the association of paternal age with reproductive outcomes.To investigate the correlation between advanced paternal age and semen quality, embryo quality, pregnancy, and neonatal outcomes in IVF cycles.In this study, after excluding female partners aged ≥35 years, we analyzed data from 761 infertile couples who underwent in vitro fertilization cycles at the First Affiliated Hospital of USTC between June 2020 and March 2023. Cases were classified into three groups according to the age of the male: <35 years (530 infertile couples), 35 years ≤ paternal age <40 years (125 infertile couples), and ≥40 years (106 infertile couples). Then, we compared the general clinical data arising from in vitro fertilization cycles between the three groups, including semen parameters, embryonic parameters, and pregnancy and neonatal birth outcomes.Data analysis showed that the duration of infertility and the incidence of secondary infertility were significantly higher in paternal age ≥35 years groups than those aged <35 years (all p < 0.05). We also observed a significant difference between ≥40 years and <35 years groups in terms of the normal fertilization rate, high‐quality embryo rate, clinical pregnancy rate, miscarriage rate, live birth rate, Apgar scores, and the low birth weight neonatal rate (all p < 0.05). The group with paternal age ≥40 years showed statistically significant differences in terms of clinical pregnancy rate, miscarriage rate, live birth rate, and low birth weight on multivariable logistic regression (all p < 0.05).The results of our study indicate that advanced paternal age (≥40 years) has a significant impact on the embryo quality, pregnancy outcome, and neonatal outcome. Background: Existing data on maternal dietary patterns and birth weight remains limited and inconsistent, especially in non-Western populations. We aimed to examine the relationship between maternal dietary patterns and birth weight among a cohort of Chinese. Methods: In this study, 4,184 mother-child pairs were included from the Iodine Status in Pregnancy and Offspring Health Cohort. Maternal diet during pregnancy was evaluated using a self-administered food frequency questionnaire with 69 food items. Principal component analysis was used to identify dietary patterns. Information on birth weight and gestational age was obtained through medical records. Adverse outcomes of birth weight were defined according to standard clinical cutoffs, including low birth weight, macrosomia, small for gestational age, and large for gestational age. Results: Three maternal dietary patterns were identified: plant-based, animal-based, and processed food and beverage dietary patterns, which explained 23.7% variance in the diet. In the multivariate-adjusted model, women with higher adherence to the plant-based dietary patten had a significantly higher risk of macrosomia (middle tertile vs. low tertile: odds ratio (OR) 1.45, 95% CI 1.00-2.10; high tertile vs. low tertile: OR 1.55, 95% CI 1.03–2.34; P-trend = 0.039). For individual food groups, potato intake showed positive association with macrosomia (high tertile vs. low tertile: OR 1.72, 95% CI 1.20–2.47; P-trend = 0.002). Excluding potatoes from the plant-based dietary pattern attenuated its association with macrosomia risk. No significant associations was observed for the animal-based or processed food and beverage dietary pattern with birth weight outcomes. Conclusions: Adherence to a plant-based diet high in carbohydrate intake was associated with higher macrosomia risk among Chinese women. Background: Given that viral infections can increase the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes, such as spontaneous miscarriage, preterm premature rupture of membranes, and preterm birth, the effects of COVID-19, a novel emerging coronavirus disease rapidly spreading globally, on pregnancy outcomes have garnered significant attention. Methods: We conducted a review of studies related to pregnant women infected with SARS-CoV-2 over the past five years (December 2019 to April 2023), utilizing search engines such as PubMed, Web of Science, and the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI). This study was registered with PROSPERO with ID: CRD42024540849. Results: A total of 218 articles were screened, with 15 studies meeting the inclusion criteria for this research, including 12 cohort studies, one cross-sectional study, one case-control study, and one case series. Six studies found that the preterm birth rate was higher in the infected group compared to the control group; five studies showed that the cesarean section rate was higher in the infected group; three studies found that the APGAR scores of newborns were higher in the control group than in the infected group; three studies indicated that the mortality rate of newborns in the infected group was higher than that in the control group. Conclusions: Our retrospective review suggests that compared to pregnant women not infected with SARS-CoV-2, those diagnosed with COVID-19 are more likely to experience adverse outcomes such as preterm birth, cesarean delivery, and low birth weight in newborns. Background: Deaths occurring during the neonatal period contribute close to half of under-five mortality rate (U5MR); over 80% of these deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Poor maternal antepartum and perinatal health predisposes newborns to low birth weight (LBW), birth asphyxia, and infections which increase the newborn's risk of death. Methods: The objective of the study was to assess the association between abnormal postpartum maternal temperature and early infant outcomes, specifically illness requiring hospitalisation or leading to death between birth and six weeks' age. We prospectively studied a cohort of neonates born at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital in Uganda to mothers with abnormal postpartum temperature and followed them longitudinally through early infancy. We performed a logistic regression of the relationship between maternal abnormal temperature and six-week infant hospitalization, adjusting for gestational age and 10-minute APGAR score at birth. Results: Of the 648 postpartum participants from the parent study who agreed to enrol their neonates in the sub-study, 100 (15%) mothers had abnormal temperature. The mean maternal age was 24.6 (SD 5.3) years, and the mean parity was 2.3 (SD 1.5). There were more preterm babies born to mothers with abnormal maternal temperature (10%) compared to 1.1% to mothers with normal temperature (p=˂0.001). While the majority of newborns (92%) had a 10-minute APGAR score > 7, 14% of newborns whose mothers had abnormal temperatures had APGAR score ˂7 compared to 7% of those born to mothers with normal postpartum temperatures (P = 0.02). Six-week outcome data was available for 545 women and their infants. In the logistic regression model adjusted for gestational age at birth and 10-minute APGAR score, maternal abnormal temperature was not significantly associated with the composite adverse infant health outcome (being unwell or dead) between birth and six weeks' age (aOR = 0.35, 95% CI 0.07–1.79, P = 0.21). The 10-minute APGAR score was significantly associated with adverse six-week outcome (P < 0.01). Conclusions: While our results do not demonstrate an association between abnormal maternal temperature and newborn and early infant outcomes, good routine neonate care should be emphasized, and the infants should be observed for any abnormal findings that may warrant further assessment. Recent studies have shown atypical antipsychotics and lamotrigine to have a favorable safety profile; however, little information is published on lurasidone.The objective of this retrospective chart review was to evaluate pregnancy and neonatal outcomes in obstetric patients with bipolar disorder who are untreated, compared to those treated with lurasidone, other atypical antipsychotics, and lamotrigine at a tertiary teaching institution.This retrospective cohort study included neonates whose mothers had a diagnosis of bipolar disorder and were referred to the Maternal & Fetal Care Clinic with two documented visits after January 1, 2014, with delivery by October 31, 2017, within an SSM health‐system hospital.In this study, women with untreated bipolar disorder (not on any mood stabilizer) in pregnancy had significantly higher rates of premature delivery and low birth weight compared to women on mood stabilizers of lamotrigine, lurasidone, and other atypical antipsychotics. No difference was observed for pregnancy or neonatal outcomes between patients taking any of the mood stabilizers.This study suggests that the use of lurasidone, other atypical antipsychotics, and lamotrigine have better neonatal outcomes than untreated bipolar disorder in pregnancy. Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the epidemiological characteristics and antibiotic resistance patterns of Ureaplasma urealyticum (UU) infection among women and children in southwest China. Methods: A total of 8,934 specimens, including urogenital swabs and throat swabs were analyzed in this study. All samples were tested using RNA-based Simultaneous Amplification and Testing (SAT) methods. Culture and drug susceptibility tests were performed on UU positive patients. Results: Among the 8,934 patients, the overall positive rate for UU was 47.92%, with a higher prevalence observed among women of reproductive age and neonates. The majority of UU positive outpatients were women of reproductive age (88.03%), while the majority of UU positive inpatients were neonates (93.99%). Overall, hospitalization rates due to UU infection were significantly higher in neonates than in women. Further analysis among neonatal inpatients revealed a higher incidence of preterm birth and low birth weight in UU positive inpatients (52.75% and 3.65%, respectively) than in UU negative inpatients (44.64% and 2.89%, respectively), especially in very preterm and extremely preterm neonates. Moreover, the incidence rate of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) among hospitalized neonatal patients was significantly higher in the UU positive group (6.89%) than in the UU negative group (4.18%). The drug susceptibility tests of UU in the neonatology, gynecology and obstetrics departments exhibited consistent sensitivity patterns to antibiotics, with high sensitivity to tetracyclines and macrolides, and low sensitivity to fluoroquinolones. Notably, UU samples collected from the neonatology department exhibited significantly higher sensitivity to azithromycin and erythromycin (93.8% and 92.9%, respectively) than those collected from the gynecology and obstetrics departments. Conclusions: This study enhances our understanding of the current epidemiological characteristics and antibiotic resistance patterns of UU infection among women and children in southwest China. Background: Maternal smoking has been linked to adverse health outcomes in newborns but the extent to which it impacts newborn health has not been quantified through an aggregated cord blood DNA methylation (DNAm) score. Here, we examine the feasibility of using cord blood DNAm scores leveraging large external studies as discovery samples to capture the epigenetic signature of maternal smoking and its influence on newborns in White European and South Asian populations. Methods: We first examined the association between individual CpGs and cigarette smoking during pregnancy, and smoking exposure in two White European birth cohorts (n=744). Leveraging established CpGs for maternal smoking, we constructed a cord blood epigenetic score of maternal smoking that was validated in one of the European-origin cohorts (n=347). This score was then tested for association with smoking status, secondary smoking exposure during pregnancy, and health outcomes in offspring measured after birth in an independent White European (n=397) and a South Asian birth cohort (n=504). Results: Several previously reported genes for maternal smoking were supported, with the strongest and most consistent association signal from the GFI1 gene (6 CpGs with p<5 × 10-5). The epigenetic maternal smoking score was strongly associated with smoking status during pregnancy (OR = 1.09 [1.07, 1.10], p=5.5 × 10-33) and more hours of self-reported smoking exposure per week (1.93 [1.27, 2.58], p=7.8 × 10-9) in White Europeans. However, it was not associated with self-reported exposure (p>0.05) among South Asians, likely due to a lack of smoking in this group. The same score was consistently associated with a smaller birth size (–0.37±0.12 cm, p=0.0023) in the South Asian cohort and a lower birth weight (–0.043±0.013 kg, p=0.0011) in the combined cohorts. Conclusions: This cord blood epigenetic score can help identify babies exposed to maternal smoking and assess its long-term impact on growth. Notably, these results indicate a consistent association between the DNAm signature of maternal smoking and a small body size and low birth weight in newborns, in both White European mothers who exhibited some amount of smoking and in South Asian mothers who themselves were not active smokers.
