Abstract

La production des oléfines légères : éthylène, propylène et butadiène est actuellement entièrement basée sur le vapocraquage d'hydrocarbures dans des fours tubulaires. L'industrie doit faire face à un problème de coûts de production croissants, en grande partie dû au renchérissement des hydrocarbures et de l'énergie. D'autres procédés que le vapocraquage ont été proposés pour favoriser la diversification sur le plan des matières premières ; certains ont même été exploités industriellement. Le présent article fait le point sur l'état des développements en cours concernant plus particulièrement les procédés suivants : - craquage autothermique ; - craquage par caloporteur solide ; - craquage cyclique ; - craquage catalytique ; - prétraitement de charges lourdes ; - oléfines à partir de gaz de synthèse ; - oléfines à partir de biomasse. The production of light olefins (ethylene, propylene and butadien) is now based entirely on hydrocarbon steam cracking in pipe stills. The industry must face the problem of increasing production costs, largely due to the higher costs of hydrocarbons and energy. Processes other than steam cracking have been proposed to promote diversification with regard to raw materials, and some such processes have even operated industrially. This article sums up the state of ongoing developments concerning in particular the following processes: a) autothermal cracking; b) cracking by a solid heat carrier; c) cyclic cracking; d) catalytic cracking ; e) preprocessing of heavy feeds; f) olefins from synthetic gas; g) olefins from biomass.

Abstract

Small explosive charges, called seal bombs, used by commercial fisheries to deter marine mammals from depredation and accidental bycatch during fishing operations, produce high level sounds that may negatively impact nearby animals. Seal bombs were exploded underwater and recorded at various ranges with a calibrated hydrophone to characterize the pulse waveforms and to provide appropriate propagation loss models for source level (SL) estimates. Waveform refraction became important at about 1500 m slant range with approximately spherical spreading losses observed at shorter ranges. The SL for seal bombs was estimated to be 233 dB re 1 μPa m; however, for impulses such as explosions, better metrics integrate over the pulse duration, accounting for the total energy in the pulse, including source pressure impulse, estimated as 193 Pa m s, and sound exposure source level, estimated as 197 dB re 1 μPa2 m2 s over a 2 ms window. Accounting for the whole 100 ms waveform, including the bubble pulses and sea surface reflections, sound exposure source level was 203 dB re 1 μPa2 m2 s. Furthermore, integrating the energy over an entire event period of multiple explosions (i.e., cumulative sound exposure level) should be considered when evaluating impact.

5. Testing dark matter halo properties using self-similarity

Abstract

We use self-similarity in N-body simulations of scale-free models to test for resolution dependence in the mass function and two-point correlation functions of dark matter halos. We use 1024$^3$ particle simulations performed with ABACUS, and compare results obtained with two halo finders: friends-of-friends (FOF) and ROCKSTAR. The FOF mass functions show a systematic deviation from self-similarity which is explained by resolution dependence of the FOF mass assignment previously reported in the literature. Weak evidence for convergence is observed only starting from halos of several thousand particles, and mass functions are overestimated by at least as much as 20-25 percent for halos of 50 particles. The mass function of the default ROCKSTAR halo catalog (with bound virial spherical overdensity mass), on the other hand, shows good convergence from of order 50 to 100 particles per halo, with no detectable evidence at the few percent level of any systematic dependence for larger particle number. Tests show that the mass unbinding procedure in ROCKSTAR is the key factor in obtaining this much improved resolution. Applying the same analysis to the halo-halo two point correlation function, we find again strong evidence for convergence only for ROCKSTAR halos, at separations sufficiently large so that halos do not overlap. At these separations we can exclude dependence on resolution at the 5-10 percent level once halos have of order 50 to 100 particles. At smaller separations results are not converged even at significantly larger particle number, and bigger simulations would be required to establish the resolution required for convergence., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, version to match published version, small changes (note slightly more conservative bounds on convergence)

L’objectif principal de notre travail était d’analyser s’il existait une modification des délais de prise en charge dans notre centre, au cours de trois vagues successives.

Abstract

This article discusses a study that evaluated the use of an Apple Watch for measuring transcutaneous oxygen saturation (tSO2) in children with cyanotic heart disease. The study found that the Apple Watch provided valid results for tSO2 measurements in children with mild cyanosis (tSO2 > 85%), which could be helpful for monitoring at home. However, the Apple Watch was not able to provide reliable measurements for children with severe cyanosis (tSO2 < 85%). The findings suggest that the Apple Watch could be a useful tool for assessing cyanosis in certain cases, but further research is needed. [Extracted from the article]

Abstract

International audience; Background The identification of patients at high risk of a disabling disease course would be invaluable in guiding initial therapy in Crohn’s disease (CD). Our objective was to evaluate a combination of clinical, serological, and genetic factors to predict complicated disease course in pediatric-onset CD. Methods Data for pediatric-onset CD patients, diagnosed before 17 years of age between 1988 and 2004 and followed more than 5 years, were extracted from the population-based EPIMAD registry. The main outcome was defined by the occurrence of complicated behavior (stricturing or penetrating) and/or intestinal resection within the 5 years following diagnosis. Lasso logistic regression models were used to build a predictive model based on clinical data at diagnosis, serological data (ASCA, pANCA, anti-OmpC, anti-Cbir1, anti-Fla2, anti-Flax), and 369 candidate single nucleotide polymorphisms. Results In total, 156 children with an inflammatory (B1) disease at diagnosis were included. Among them, 35% (n = 54) progressed to a complicated behavior or an intestinal resection within the 5 years following diagnosis. The best predictive model (PREDICT-EPIMAD) included the location at diagnosis, pANCA, and 6 single nucleotide polymorphisms. This model showed good discrimination and good calibration, with an area under the curve of 0.80 after correction for optimism bias (sensitivity, 79%, specificity, 74%, positive predictive value, 61%, negative predictive value, 87%). Decision curve analysis confirmed the clinical utility of the model. Conclusions A combination of clinical, serotypic, and genotypic variables can predict disease progression in this population-based pediatric-onset CD cohort. Independent validation is needed before it can be used in clinical practice.

Abstract

Abstract Background COVID-19 Ethnic Inequalities in Mental health and Multimorbidities (COVEIMM) is a mixed methods study to explore whether COVID-19 exacerbated ethnic health inequalities in adults with serious mental and physical health conditions. We analysed data from electronic health records for England and conducted interviews in Birmingham and Solihull, Manchester, and South London. Sites were selected because they were pilot sites for the Patient and Carer Race Equality Framework being introduced by NHS England to tackle race inequalities in mental health. Prior to the pandemic people in England with severe mental illnesses (SMIs) faced an 11–17-year reduction in life expectancy, mostly due to preventable, long-term, physical health conditions. During the pandemic there was a marked increase in deaths of those living with an SMI. Aims This qualitative interview study aimed to understand the reasons underlying ethnic inequalities in mortality and service use during the COVID-19 pandemic for adult service users and carers of Black African, Black Caribbean, Indian, Pakistani, and Bangladeshi backgrounds living with serious multiple long-term mental and physical health conditions. Methods We took a participatory action research approach and qualitative interviews undertaken by experts-by-experience and university researchers Participants were purposively sampled by ethnicity, diagnoses, and comorbidities across three geographically distinct sites in England. Transcriptions were coded inductively and deductively and analysed thematically. Results Findings indicated multiple points along primary and secondary health pathways for mental and physical health that have the potential to exacerbate the unjust gap in mortality that exists for Black and Asian people with SMIs. Issues such as timely access to care (face-to-face and remote), being treated in a culturally appropriate manner with empathy, dignity and respect, and being able to use services without experiencing undue force, racism or other forms of intersectional discrimination were important themes arising from interviews. Conclusion These poor experiences create systemic and enduring healthcare harms for racialised groups with SMIs that need to be addressed. Our findings suggest a need to address these, not only in mental health providers, but across the whole health and care system and a need to ensure more equitable healthcare partnerships with service users, carers, and communities from racialised backgrounds who are often excluded.

This first progress report of the Vocational-Technical Education Consortium of States (V-TECS) covers the progress of the V-TECS through its first seven months of operation and is designed to provide information to member States, prospective members, and interested agencies, organizations, and foundations. Abstract

Small explosive charges, called seal bombs, used by commercial fisheries to deter marine mammals from depredation and accidental bycatch during fishing operations, produce high level sounds that may negatively impact nearby animals. Seal bombs were exploded underwater and recorded at various ranges with a calibrated hydrophone to characterize the pulse waveforms and to provide appropriate propagation loss models for source level (SL) estimates. Waveform refraction became important at about 1500 m slant range with approximately spherical spreading losses observed at shorter ranges. The SL for seal bombs was estimated to be 233 dB re 1 μPa m; however, for impulses such as explosions, better metrics integrate over the pulse duration, accounting for the total energy in the pulse, including source pressure impulse, estimated as 193 Pa m s, and sound exposure source level, estimated as 197 dB re 1 μPa2 m2 s over a 2 ms window. Accounting for the whole 100 ms waveform, including the bubble pulses and sea surface reflections, sound exposure source level was 203 dB re 1 μPa2 m2 s. Furthermore, integrating the energy over an entire event period of multiple explosions (i.e., cumulative sound exposure level) should be considered when evaluating impact.

Abstract

Abstract Background Body worn cameras (BWC) are mobile audio and video capture devices that can be secured to clothing allowing the wearer to record some of what they see and hear. This technology is being introduced in a range of healthcare settings as part of larger violence reduction strategies aimed at reducing incidents of aggression and violence on inpatient wards, however limited evidence exists to understand if this technology achieves such goals. Aim This study aimed to evaluate the implementation of BWCs on two inpatient mental health wards, including the impact on incidents, the acceptability to staff and patients, the sustainability of the resource use and ability to manage the use of BWCs on these wards. Methods The study used a mixed-methods design comparing quantitative measures including ward activity and routinely collected incident data at three time-points before during and after the pilot implementation of BWCs on one acute ward and one psychiatric intensive care unit, alongside pre and post pilot qualitative interviews with patients and staff, analysed using a framework based on the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research. Results Results showed no clear relationship between the use of BWCs and rates or severity of incidents on either ward, with limited impact of using BWCs on levels of incidents. Qualitative findings noted mixed perceptions about the use of BWCs and highlighted the complexity of implementing such technology as a violence reduction method within a busy healthcare setting Furthermore, the qualitative data collected during this pilot period highlighted the potential systemic and contextual factors such as low staffing that may impact on the incident data presented. Conclusion This study sheds light on the complexities of using such BWCs as a tool for ‘maximising safety’ on mental health settings. The findings suggest that BWCs have a limited impact on levels of incidents on wards, something that is likely to be largely influenced by the process of implementation as well as a range of contextual factors. As a result, it is likely that while BWCs may see successes in one hospital site this is not guaranteed for another site as such factors will have a considerable impact on efficacy, acceptability, and feasibility.
