Atmospheric evaporative demand is a key metric for monitoring agricultural drought. Existing ways of estimating evaporative demand in drought indices do not faithfully represent the constraints imposed by land surface characteristics and become less accurate over nonuniform land surfaces. This study proposes incorporating surface vegetation characteristics, such as vegetation dynamics data, aerodynamic parameters, and physiological parameters, into existing potential-evapotranspiration (PET) methods. This approach is implemented across the continental United States (CONUS) for the period from 1981–2017 and is tested using a recently developed drought index, the Standardized Precipitation–Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI). We show that activating realistic maximum surface conductance and aerodynamic conductance could improve the prediction of soil moisture dynamics and drought impacts by 29 %–41 % on average compared to more simple, widely used methods. We also demonstrate that this is especially effective in forests and humid regions, with improvements of 86 %–89 %. Our approach only requires a minimal amount of ancillary data while allowing for both historical reconstruction and real-time drought forecasting. This offers a physically meaningful yet easy-to-implement way to account for vegetation control in drought indices.

Abstract As the heritability of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is high and AAA partially shares genetic architecture with other cardiovascular diseases, genetic information could help inform AAA screening strategies. Exploiting pleiotropy and meta-analysing summary data from large studies, we construct a polygenic risk score (PRS) for AAA. Leveraging related traits improves PRS performance (R2) by 22.7%, relative to using AAA alone. Compared with the low PRS tertile, intermediate and high tertiles have hazard ratios for AAA of 2.13 (95%CI 1.61, 2.82) and 3.70 (95%CI 2.86, 4.80) respectively, adjusted for clinical risk factors. Using simulation modelling, we compare PRS- and smoking-stratified screening with inviting men at age 65 and not inviting women (current UK strategy). In a futuristic scenario where genomic information is available, our modelling suggests inviting male current smokers with high PRS earlier than 65 and screening female smokers with high/intermediate PRS at 65 and 70 respectively, may improve cost-effectiveness.

Abstract Spacecraft observations revealed that rocks on carbonaceous asteroids, which constitute the most numerous class by composition, can develop millimeter-to-meter-scale fractures due to thermal stresses. However, signatures of this process on the second-most populous group of asteroids, the S-complex, have been poorly constrained. Here, we report observations of boulders’ fractures on Dimorphos, which is the moonlet of the S-complex asteroid (65803) Didymos, the target of NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) planetary defense mission. We show that the size-frequency distribution and orientation of the mapped fractures are consistent with formation through thermal fatigue. The fractures’ preferential orientation supports that these have originated in situ on Dimorphos boulders and not on Didymos boulders later transferred to Dimorphos. Based on our model of the fracture propagation, we propose that thermal fatigue on rocks exposed on the surface of S-type asteroids can form shallow, horizontally propagating fractures in much shorter timescales (100 kyr) than in the direction normal to the boulder surface (order of Myrs). The presence of boulder fields affected by thermal fracturing on near-Earth asteroid surfaces may contribute to an enhancement in the ejected mass and momentum from kinetic impactors when deflecting asteroids.

Abstract Asteroids smaller than 10 km are thought to be rubble piles formed from the reaccumulation of fragments produced in the catastrophic disruption of parent bodies. Ground-based observations reveal that some of these asteroids are today binary systems, in which a smaller secondary orbits a larger primary asteroid. However, how these asteroids became binary systems remains unclear. Here, we report the analysis of boulders on the surface of the stony asteroid (65803) Didymos and its moonlet, Dimorphos, from data collected by the NASA DART mission. The size-frequency distribution of boulders larger than 5 m on Dimorphos and larger than 22.8 m on Didymos confirms that both asteroids are piles of fragments produced in the catastrophic disruption of their progenitors. Dimorphos boulders smaller than 5 m have size best-fit by a Weibull distribution, which we attribute to a multi-phase fragmentation process either occurring during coalescence or during surface evolution. The density per km2 of Dimorphos boulders ≥1 m is 2.3x with respect to the one obtained for (101955) Bennu, while it is 3.0x with respect to (162173) Ryugu. Such values increase once Dimorphos boulders ≥5 m are compared with Bennu (3.5x), Ryugu (3.9x) and (25143) Itokawa (5.1x). This is of interest in the context of asteroid studies because it means that contrarily to the single bodies visited so far, binary systems might be affected by subsequential fragmentation processes that largely increase their block density per km2. Direct comparison between the surface distribution and shapes of the boulders on Didymos and Dimorphos suggest that the latter inherited its material from the former. This finding supports the hypothesis that some asteroid binary systems form through the spin up and mass shedding of a fraction of the primary asteroid.

The lack of precisely labeled data limits the development of supervised polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) image change detection. Therefore, semi-supervised deep learning methods have recently demonstrated their significant capability for PolSAR image change detection. Similarity Matching (SimMatch) improves the performance of semi-supervised learning tasks across different benchmark datasets and different settings. Introducing SimMatch into the field of PolSAR image change detection can improve the performance of semi-supervised PolSAR image change detection under limited labeled data conditions. Usually, semi-supervision solves the problem of insufficient labeled data by generating pseudo-labels. However, when the pseudo-label method is simply applied, the model will fit on the confident but wrong pseudo-labels, resulting in poor performance. SimMatch offers a solution by requiring the strongly augmented view to share the same semantic similarity (i.e. label prediction) and instance characteristics (i.e. similarity between instances) with a weak augmented view for more intrinsic feature matching. Besides, by using a labeled memory buffer, the two similarities can be isomorphically transformed with each other by introducing the aggregating and unfolding techniques. Therefore, the semantic and instance pseudo-labels can be mutually propagated, and then, the detection performance of the PolSAR image change detection is improved. Experimental results on real PolSAR datasets demonstrated that SimMatch is an effective semi-supervised PolSAR change detection method and its performance surpasses some well-known change detection methods. Compared to the fully-supervised algorithm CWNN, the semi-supervised SimMatch algorithm can improve accuracy by up to 14.4%.

Resumen: Objetivo: Descripción y análisis de la relación entre las fracturas de húmero proximal y la lesión traumática del nervio axilar circunflejo. Material y método: Estudio prospectivo, observacional, de una serie de casos consecutivos de fracturas de extremo proximal de húmero. Se realizó valoración radiográfica, clasificando las fracturas según el sistema AO (Arbeitsgemeinshaft für Osteosynsthesefragen, Asociación de Grupo de Trabajo para el Estudio de la Fijación Interna de las Fracturas), y electromiografía (EMG) para la evaluación de la lesión del nervio axilar. Resultados: De 105 casos consecutivos de fracturas de húmero proximal, 31 pacientes cumplían los criterios de inclusión. Muestra: 86% mujeres y 14% hombres con edad media de 71,8 años (30-96 años). De los pacientes incluidos en el estudio, 58% presentó una EMG normal o leve axonotmesis, 23% presentó neuropatía del nervio axilar sin denervación muscular y 19%, lesión con denervación del nervio axilar. Los pacientes que sufrieron fracturas complejas de húmero proximal (AO11B y AO11C) tuvieron más riesgo de presentar lesiones tipo neuropatía axilar con denervación muscular en la EMG, siendo esta relación estadísticamente significativa (p < 0,001). Field investigations and back analyses were conducted on a rockfall hazard. The flexible barrier protection system constructed along the roadside was damaged by the rockfall impact and lost its mitigation ability. Vital physical characteristics such as rockfall trajectory and kinetic energy were presumed based on the data from the aerial survey and the slope digital model. A numerical model, including slope, rockfalls, and flexible barrier, was created and thus the impacting process was reproduced. It demonstrates that the impact kinetic energy of the rockfall is only around 40 % of its design protection energy. The improper connections of members are the leading causes of damage, which prevent the flexible barrier from producing significant deformation and reduce its capacity to absorb impact force. The damage can be avoided by changing the connections of the members to improve the ability of the nets and ropes to slide and deform. The calculation results indicate that the impact resistance of the optimized model is 3 times better than the actual project. The findings can be used as a guide when designing a flexible protection system that performs better.

This paper presents numerical modelling of the ballistic impact response of hybrid laminated structures, which are developed through combinations of ceramics, Ultra-High-Molecular-Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE), Kevlar and compressed wood. It is, for the first time, to embed the compressed wood in the ballistic panel and numerically investigate the impact response of the hybrid structures made of the multiple constituent materials. Different constitutive models and the related failure criteria were employed in the modelling to capture the ballistic responses of the constituent materials and hybrid structures. The numerical simulations were compared with the corresponding experimental results with acceptable correlation. The essential features of the hybrid composite structures subjected to high velocity impact were simulated by the finite element (FE) models, such as deformation and failure modes, back-face signature and the residual velocities. The FE models developed are ready to be used to assist design lightweight composite armour with optimized ballistic resistance and self-weight.

Introduction While research on drug use motives has primarily focused on widely used substances like alcohol, tobacco, and cannabis, understanding the motivations behind MDMA use is crucial for developing targeted therapeutic, preventive, and harm reduction strategies. Objectives The objective of this study is to present the findings of an online survey that evaluates the motives behind the use of 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) and draws comparisons between these motives and those for alcohol and cannabis consumption. Methods Data were collected through an online survey, available in both English and French, with 99 participants. The survey included five sections, including a substance abuse screening test (ASSIST) and the Pahnke-Richards Mystical Experience Questionnaire. The primary focus was on motives for MDMA use, assessed using an adapted version of the Marijuana Motives Measure (MMM), comparing them with alcohol and cannabis motives. Results The most reported motive for MDMA use was enhancement, followed by expansion motives. Social motives were the third most common, while coping motives ranked fourth, and conformity was the least common motive. Comparisons with alcohol and cannabis use motives revealed differences in motives for each substance. MDMA showed a unique pattern of motives. Conclusions Enhancement emerged as the most prevalent motive for MDMA use, consistent with previous research on MDMA motive use. Expansion motives, which involve altering perceptions and increasing self-awareness, ranked second, reflecting the growing interest in MDMA-assisted therapy for conditions like PTSD. Surprisingly, social motives were less common for MDMA compared to alcohol and cannabis, suggesting unique social dynamics associated with MDMA use. Conformity motives were also less significant for MDMA users, possibly due to the age of initiation and user maturity. Understanding the motives behind MDMA use is essential for designing effective interventions and harm reduction strategies. The distinct motives for MDMA, as compared to alcohol and cannabis, highlight the need for tailored approaches to address its use. Further research should explore the complex interplay of motives, age of initiation, social context, and cultural factors to inform comprehensive strategies related to MDMA use. Here, we present cosmogenic-10Be and cosmogenic-3He data from Ferrar dolerite pyroxenes in surficial rock samples and a bedrock core from the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica, with the goal of refining the laboratory methods for extracting beryllium from pyroxene, further estimating the 10Be production rate in pyroxene and demonstrating the applicability of 10Be–3He in mafic rock. The ability to routinely measure cosmogenic 10Be in pyroxene will open new opportunities for quantifying exposure durations and Earth surface processes in mafic rocks. We describe scalable laboratory methods for isolating beryllium from pyroxene, which include a simple hydrofluoric acid leaching procedure for removing meteoric 10Be and the addition of a pH 8 precipitation step to reduce the cation load prior to ion exchange chromatography. 10Be measurements in pyroxene from the surface samples have apparent 3He exposure ages of 1–6 Myr. We estimate a spallation production rate for 10Be in pyroxene, referenced to 3He, of 3.6 ± 0.2 atoms g−1 yr−1. 10Be and 3He measurements in the bedrock core yield initial estimates for parameters associated with 10Be and 3He production by negative-muon capture (f10∗=0.00183 and f3∗fCfD=0.00337). Next, we demonstrate that the 10Be–3He pair in pyroxene can be used to simultaneously resolve erosion rates and exposure ages, finding that the measured cosmogenic-nuclide concentrations in our surface samples are best explained by 2–8 Myr of exposure at erosion rates of 0–35 cm Myr−1. Finally, given the low 10Be in our laboratory blanks (average of 5.7 × 103 atoms), the reported measurement precision, and our estimated production rate, it should be possible to measure 2 g samples with 10Be concentrations of 6 × 104 and 1.5 × 104 atoms g−1 with 5 % and 15 % uncertainty, respectively. With this level of precision, Last Glacial Maximum to Late Holocene surfaces can now be dated with 10Be in pyroxene. Application of 10Be in pyroxene, alone or in combination with 3He, will expand possibilities for investigating glacial histories and landscape change in mafic rock.

Objective: This study provides a series of updated, evidence-based recommendations for the management of acute stroke. We aim to lay a foundation for the development of individual centres’ internal protocols, serving as a reference for nursing care. Methods: We review the available evidence on acute stroke care. The most recent national and international guidelines were consulted. Levels of evidence and degrees of recommendation are based on the Oxford Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine classification. Results: The study describes prehospital acute stroke care, the operation of the code stroke protocol, care provided by the stroke team upon the patient’s arrival at hospital, reperfusion treatments and their limitations, admission to the stroke unit, nursing care in the stroke unit, and discharge from hospital. Conclusions: These guidelines provide general, evidence-based recommendations to guide professionals who care for patients with acute stroke. However, limited data are available on some aspects, showing the need for continued research on acute stroke management. Theoretical and experimental studies have verified the existence of “magic angles” in twisted bilayer graphene, where the rotation angle between layers gives rise to flat bands and consequently exotic correlated phases. Recently, magic-angle phenomena have been predicted and reported in other graphene systems, for instance, multilayers with alternating twist angles and trilayers with identical twist angles between consecutive layers. In this paper, we present a comprehensive theoretical study on flat bands in general twisted graphene systems. Using the continuum model in the chiral limit, we demonstrate the existence of flat bands in a variety of multilayers where the ratios between twist angles are rational and develop a framework for predicting magic-angle sets in trilayer configurations with arbitrary ratio of rotation angles. Our results are corroborated by tight-binding calculations. Remarkably, the technique we developed can be extended to systems with many layers of graphene. Our results suggest that flat bands can exist in graphene multilayers with angle disorder, that is, narrow samples of turbostatic graphite, point to the existence of a continuous, connected magic surface in trilayer configuration space, and compare favourably with contemporary experiments on trilayer moiré quasicrystals.

Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) constitutes a large fraction of atmospheric aerosol. To assess its impacts on climate and air pollution, knowledge of the number of phases in internal mixtures of different SOA types is required. Atmospheric models often assume that different SOA types form a single phase when mixed. Here, we present visual observations of the number of phases formed after mixing different anthropogenic and biogenic SOA types. Mixing SOA types generated in environmental chambers with oxygen-to-carbon (O/C) ratios between 0.34 and 1.05, we found 6 out of 15 mixtures of two SOA types to result in two phase particles. We demonstrate that the number of phases depends on the difference in the average O/C ratio between the two SOA types (Δ(O/C)). Using a threshold Δ(O/C) of 0.47, we can predict the phase behavior of over 90 % of our mixtures, with one- and two-phase particles predicted for Δ(O/C)<0.47 and Δ(O/C)≥0.47, respectively. This threshold ΔO/C value provides a simple parameter to predict whether mixtures of fresh and aged SOA form one- or two-phase particles in the atmosphere. In addition, we show that phase-separated SOA particles form when mixtures of volatile organic compounds emitted from real trees are oxidized.

Lyman-alpha emission is one of the observational probes for the high-redshift universe. Here, the authors show several Lyman-alpha emitting companion galaxies around the hot dust-obscured galaxy W0410-091 suggesting that the galaxy evolves in a very dense environment.

TAE Technologies’ fifth-generation fusion device, C-2W (also called ‘Norman’), is the world’s largest compact-toroid device and has made significant progress in field-reversed configuration (FRC) plasma performance. C-2W produces record breaking, macroscopically stable, high-temperature advanced beam-driven FRC plasmas, dominated by injected fast particles and sustained in steady state, which is primarily limited by neutral-beam (NB) pulse duration. The NB power supply system has recently been upgraded to extend the pulse length from 30 ms to 40 ms, which allows for a longer plasma lifetime and thus better characterization and further enhancement of FRC performance. An active plasma control system is routinely used in C-2W to produce consistent FRC performance as well as for reliable machine operations using magnet coils, edge-biasing electrodes, gas injection and tunable-energy NBs. Google’s machine learning framework for experimental optimization has also been routinely used to enhance plasma performance. Dedicated plasma optimization experimental campaigns, particularly focused on the external magnetic field profile and NB injection (NBI) optimizations, have produced a superior FRC plasma performance; for instance, achieving a total plasma energy of ∼13 kJ, a trapped poloidal magnetic flux of ∼16 mWb (based on the rigid-rotor model) and plasma sustainment in steady state up to ∼40 ms. Furthermore, under some operating conditions, the electron temperature of FRC plasmas at a quiescent phase has successfully reached up to ∼1 keV at the peak inside the FRC separatrix for the first time. The overall FRC performance is well correlated with the NB and edge-biasing systems, where higher total plasma energy is obtained with higher NBI power and applied voltage on biasing electrodes. C-2W operations have now reached a mature level where the machine can produce hot, stable, long-lived, and repeatable plasmas in a well-controlled manner.

Atmospheric processes, including both primary emissions and secondary formation, may exert complex effects on aerosol hygroscopicity, which is of significant importance in understanding and quantifying the effect of aerosols on climate and human health. In order to explore the influence of local emissions and secondary formation processes on aerosol hygroscopicity, we investigated the hygroscopic properties of submicron aerosol particles at a rural site in the North China Plain (NCP) in winter 2018. This was conducted by simultaneous measurements of aerosol hygroscopicity and chemical composition, using a custom-built hygroscopic tandem differential mobility analyzer (HTDMA) and a capture-vaporizer time-of-flight aerosol chemical speciation monitor (CV-ToF-ACSM). The hygroscopicity results showed that the particles during the entire campaign were mainly externally mixed, with a more hygroscopic (MH) mode and a less hygroscopic (LH) mode. The mean hygroscopicity parameter (κmean) values derived from hygroscopicity measurements for particles at 60, 100, 150, and 200 nm were 0.16, 0.18, 0.16, and 0.15, respectively. During this study, we classified two distinct episodes with different relative humidity (RH) and temperature (T) conditions, indicative of different primary emissions and secondary formation processes. It was observed that aerosols at all measured sizes were more hygroscopic under the high-RH (HRH) episode than those under the low-RH (LRH) episode. During the LRH, κ decreased with increasing particle size, which may be explained by the enhanced domestic heating at low temperature, causing large emissions of non-hygroscopic or less hygroscopic primary aerosols. This is particularly obvious for 200 nm particles, with a dominant number fraction (>50 %) of LH mode particles. Using O:C-dependent hygroscopic parameters of secondary organic compounds (κSOA), closure analysis between the HTDMA-measured κ and the ACSM-derived κ was carried out. The results showed that κSOA under the LRH episode was less sensitive to the changes in organic oxidation level, while κSOA under HRH had a relatively stronger dependency on the organic O:C ratio. This feature suggests that the different sources and aerosol evolution processes, partly resulting from the variation in atmospheric RH and T conditions, may lead to significant changes in aerosol chemical composition, which will further influence their corresponding physical properties.

Aerosol hygroscopicity strongly influences the number size distribution, phase state, optical properties, and multiphase chemistry of aerosol particles. Due to the large number of organic species in atmospheric aerosols, the determination of the hygroscopicity of ambient aerosols remains challenging. In this study, we measured the hygroscopic properties of 23 organics, including carboxylic acids, amino acids, sugars, and alcohols, using a hygroscopicity tandem differential mobility analyzer (HTDMA). Earlier studies have characterized the hygroscopicity either for a limited number of organic compounds using similar techniques or for particles at sizes beyond the microscale range or even bulk samples using other methodologies. Here, we validate these studies and extend the data by measuring the hygroscopicity of a broader suite of organics for particles with sizes under the submicrometer range that are more atmospherically relevant. Moreover, we systematically evaluate the roles of that related physicochemical properties play in organic hygroscopicity. We show that the hygroscopicity of organics varies widely with functional groups and organics with the same carbon number but that more functional groups show higher hygroscopicity. However, some isomers that are very similar in molecular structure show quite different hygroscopicity, demonstrating that other physicochemical properties, such as water solubility, may contribute to their hygroscopicity as well. If the organics are fully dissolved in water (solubility >7×10-1 g mL−1), we found that their hygroscopicity is mainly controlled by their molecular weight. For the organics that are not fully dissolved in water (slightly soluble: 5×10-4 g mL−1 < solubility < 7×10-1 g mL−1), we observed that some of them show no obvious water uptake, which is probably due to the fact that they may not deliquesce under our studied conditions up to 90 % relative humidity (RH). The other type of slightly soluble organic material is moderately hygroscopic, and the larger its solubility is, the higher its hygroscopicity will be. Moreover, the hygroscopicity of organics generally increased with O:C ratios, although this relationship is not linear.

Effective density is one of the most important physical properties of atmospheric particles. It is closely linked to particle chemical composition and morphology and could provide special information on particle emissions and aging processes. In this study, size-resolved particle effective density was measured with a combined differential mobility analyzer–centrifugal particle mass analyzer–condensation particle counter (DMA–CPMA–CPC) system in autumn 2019 as part of the Multiphase chemistry experiment in Fogs and Aerosols in the North China Plain (McFAN). With a newly developed flexible Gaussian fit algorithm, frequent (77 %–87 %) bimodal distribution of particle effective density is identified, with a low-density mode (named sub-density mode) accounting for 22 %–27 % of the total number of observed particles. The prevalence of the sub-density mode is closely related to fresh black carbon (BC) emissions. The geometric mean for the main density mode (ρ‾eff,main) increases from 1.18 ± 0.10 g cm−3 (50 nm) to 1.37 ± 0.12 g cm−3 (300 nm) due to a larger fraction of high-density components and a more significant restructuring effect at large particle sizes but decreases from 0.89 ± 0.08 g cm−3 (50 nm) to 0.62 ± 0.12 g cm−3 (300 nm) for the sub-density mode (ρ‾eff,sub), which could be mainly ascribed to the agglomerate effect of BC. ρ‾eff,main and ρ‾eff,sub show similar diurnal cycles with peaks in the early afternoon, mainly attributed to the increasing mass fraction of high material density components associated with secondary aerosol production, especially of secondary inorganic aerosol (SIA). To investigate the impact of chemical composition, bulk particle effective density was calculated based on measured chemical composition (ρeff,ACSM) and compared to the average effective density at 300 nm (ρ‾eff,tot,300nm). The best agreement between the two densities is achieved when assuming a BC effective density of 0.60 g cm−3. The particle effective density is highly dependent on SIA and BC mass fractions. The influence of BC on the effective density is even stronger than SIA, implying the importance and necessity of including BC in the estimate of effective density for ambient particles.

The Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science Survey (CEERS), targeting the Extended Groth Strip extragalactic field, is one of the James Webb Space Telescope Director’s Discretionary Early Release Science programs. To date, all observations have been executed and include NIRCam/MIRI imaging and NIRSpec/NIRCam spectroscopic exposures. Here we discuss the MIRI imaging, which includes eight pointings, four of which provide deep imaging with the bluer bands (F560W and F770W) and four of which provide contiguous wavelength coverage in F1000W, F1280W, F1500W, and F1800W, where two of these also include coverage in F770W and F2100W. We present a summary of the data, data quality, and data reduction. The data reduction is based on the jwst calibration pipeline combined with custom modifications and additional steps designed to enhance the output quality, including improvements in astrometry and the removal of detector artifacts. We estimate the image depth of the reduced mosaics and show that these generally agree with expectations from the Exposure Time Calculator. We compare the MIRI F560W and F770W flux densities for bright sources to measurements from Spitzer/IRAC Ch3 (5.8 μ m) and Ch4 (8.0 μ m), and we find that they agree with systematic differences of

We exploit James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) NIRCam observations from the GLASS-JWST-Early Release Science program to investigate galaxy stellar masses at z > 7. We first show that JWST observations reduce the uncertainties on the stellar mass by a factor of at least 5–10, when compared with the highest-quality data sets available to date. We then study the UV mass-to-light ratio, finding that galaxies exhibit a a two orders of magnitude range of M / L _UV values for a given luminosity, indicative of a broad variety of physical conditions and star formation histories. As a consequence, previous estimates of the cosmic stellar-mass density—based on an average correlation between UV luminosity and stellar mass—can be biased by as much as a factor of ∼6. Our first exploration demonstrates that JWST represents a new era in our understanding of stellar masses at z > 7 and, therefore, of the growth of galaxies prior to cosmic reionization.

We present the first James Webb Space Telescope/NIRCam-led determination of 7 < z < 9 galaxy properties based on broadband imaging from 0.8 to 5 μ m as part of the GLASS-JWST Early Release Science program. This is the deepest data set acquired at these wavelengths to date, with an angular resolution ≲0.″14. We robustly identify 13 galaxies with signal-to-noise ratio ≳ 8 in F444W from 8 arcmin ^2 of data at m _AB ≤ 28 from a combination of dropout and photometric redshift selection. From simulated data modeling, we estimate the dropout sample purity to be ≳90%. We find that the number density of these F444W-selected sources is broadly consistent with expectations from the UV luminosity function determined from Hubble Space Telescope data. We characterize galaxy physical properties using a Bayesian spectral energy distribution fitting method, finding a median stellar mass of 10 ^8.5 M _⊙ and age 140 Myr, indicating they started ionizing their surroundings at redshift z > 9.5. Their star formation main sequence is consistent with predictions from simulations. Lastly, we introduce an analytical framework to constrain main-sequence evolution at z > 7 based on galaxy ages and basic assumptions, through which we find results consistent with expectations from cosmological simulations. While this work only gives a glimpse of the properties of typical galaxies that are thought to drive the reionization of the universe, it clearly shows the potential of JWST to unveil unprecedented details of galaxy formation in the first billion years.

Star-forming galaxies can exhibit strong morphological differences between the rest-frame far-UV and optical, reflecting inhomogeneities in star formation and dust attenuation. We exploit deep, high-resolution, NIRCAM seven-band observations to take a first look at the morphology of galaxies in the epoch of reionization ( z > 7), and its variation in the rest-frame wavelength range between Ly α and 6000–4000 Å, at z = 7–12. We find no dramatic variations in morphology with wavelength—of the kind that would have overturned anything we have learned from the Hubble Space Telescope. No significant trends between morphology and wavelengths are detected using standard quantitative morphology statistics. We detect signatures of mergers/interactions in 4/19 galaxies. Our results are consistent with a scenario in which Lyman-break galaxies—observed when the universe is only 400–800 Myr old—are growing via a combination of rapid, galaxy-scale star formation supplemented by the accretion of star-forming clumps and interactions.

A new combination of factors enhancing the stabilization of austenite, including pre-existed austenite among quenched martensite, prior deformation, and partitioning at high temperatures is employed to create a multi-component refined microstructure in a medium Mn steel (Fe–4Mn–0.31C–2Ni–0.5Al–0.2Mo, wt.%). The microstructure evolution and phase fraction during the processing are systematically investigated using various characterization methods. The microstructure of the specimen after 0.4 strain deformation of 73% martensite–27% austenite at 250 °C and subsequent partition-annealing at 600 °C for 20 min was composed of several phases including tempered martensite, fresh martensite, pearlite, 10% of retained austenite (RA) and undissolved cementite. By increasing the annealing temperature, the pearlitic transformation was suppressed, whereas recrystallization of the deformed martensite and carbide dissolution occurred following annealing at 650 °C for 20 min resulting in an ultrafine-grained microstructure composed of equiaxed ferrite, 32% RA along with some fresh martensite during final cooling and few carbide precipitates. The results demonstrate that the combinatorial approach accelerated partitioning of alloying elements from martensite and carbides to largely pre-existing austenite is responsible for the improved austenite stabilization during intercritical annealing of the deformed dual-phase specimens. However, competitive processes are also enhanced so that the RA content is not increased by deformation.

Resumen: Introducción y objetivos: El objetivo primario fue explorar la tendencia epidemiológica de la enfermedad intestinal inflamatoria pediátrica en América Latina; los secundarios, obtener una visión general del enfoque diagnóstico/terapéutico de miembros de la SLAGHNP y explorar la relación entre la frecuencia de casos y los años del período evaluado. Material y métodos: Se realizó una encuesta en línea a pediatras gastroenterólogos de América Latina con la plataforma SurveyMonkey. Se preguntó la frecuencia anual de pacientes nuevos de 2005 a 2016, su variedad, los segmentos del tubo digestivo afectados, los métodos de diagnóstico y el tratamiento utilizado. Se evaluó la correlación entre la frecuencia anual y los años de estudio. Resultados: Se estudió a 607 pacientes; el diagnóstico de colitis ulcerativa se realizó en 475 (78.3%), de enfermedad de Crohn en 104 (17.1%) y de enfermedad intestinal inflamatoria no clasificable en 28 (4.6%). La tendencia de colitis ulcerativa tuvo un incremento lineal con coeficiente de correlación significativo entre la frecuencia de casos nuevos y el año de estudio; 67.6% tuvieron pancolitis. Los métodos de diagnóstico incluyeron datos clínicos, endoscopia y biopsias en más del 99% de los casos; los estudios de imagen se indicaron de manera selectiva. Los esquemas farmacológicos se circunscribieron a derivados del ácido 5-aminosalicílico, azatioprina, 6-mercaptopurina, infliximab y adalimumab. Conclusiones: La enfermedad intestinal inflamatoria pediátrica en América Latina parece incrementarse en el período estudiado con predominio de formas moderadas o graves de colitis ulcerativa; esta tendencia lineal puede indicar la posibilidad predictiva de incremento gradual en la próxima década, lo que es probable que tenga implicaciones epidemiológicas y clínicas. Drug regimens were limited to 5-aminosalicylic acid derivatives, azathioprine, 6-mercaptopurine, infliximab, and adalimumab. Conclusions: Pediatric inflammatory bowel disease in Latin America appears to have increased during the years included in the study period, with a predominance of moderate or severe ulcerative colitis. That lineal trend suggests the predictive likelihood of a gradual increase in the coming years, with possible epidemiologic and clinical implications.

Advanced spectroscopy experiments and new physics experiments with positronium atoms in vacuum will benefit from positronium production in an environment free of magnetic and electrostatic fields. Here, we present a novel scheme for generating a bunched positron beam. The positron bunches are prebunched before extraction from a buffer-gas trap, nonadiabatically extracted from a 700 G magnetic field, energy elevated up to 20 kV, and bunched on a target in a free field. According to simulations of the system, 60% of cooled positrons in the buffer-gas trap are extracted and focused on the target in a time spread of 2.5 ns full width tenth maximum (FWTM) and a spot of about 4 mm FWTM for positron implantation energy higher than 3 keV. These performance numbers are achieved in the same apparatus through a combination of several innovative beam manipulations.

There hasn't been a previous case report of the anterior interosseous nerve injury secondary to the presence of the muscle of Gantzer in a patient with myasthenia gravis in literature before. The anterior interosseous nerve compressive syndrome, also known as Kiloh-Nevin syndrome, is a rare disorder comprising less than 1% of all upper limb neuropathies. Establishing the etiology of anterior interosseous nerve compressive syndrome is challenging because of the lack of specific clinical findings or testing. Herein is the case of a 46 years-old male presented with left eye ptosis, ophthalmoparesis, diplopia, and right-hand weakness. On physical examination, the Pinch Grip test was positive. Electromyography studies showed neurogenic atrophy in the muscles innervated by the anterior interosseous nerve, as well as a pathological decrement of the muscle action potential of more than 10% on repetitive nerve stimulation. Concluding that the presence of the Gantzer muscle caused anterior interosseous nerve compressive syndrome was mainly a diagnosis of exclusion, after careful consideration of other possible etiologies including carpal tunnel syndrome, cervical radiculopathy, and Parsonage-Turner Syndrome. Even though anterior interosseous nerve compressive syndrome is very rare, clinical suspicion ought to arise in the presence of weak radial flexor digitorum profundus and flexor pollicis longus muscles. This case highlights the importance of a thorough medical history, a meticulous physical examination, and particularly the significance of electromyography studies in diagnosing different neuropathological entities. When appropriate, these steps offer information crucial to the differential diagnosis and eventual surgical management, assisting physicians in making informed and accurate treatment decisions.

Size and effective density (ρe) are important properties of aerosol particles and are related to their influences on human health and the global climate. The volume equivalent diameter (Dve) is an intrinsic property that is used to evaluate particle size. Three definitions of ρe are generally used to characterize the physical property of a particle as an alternative to particle density, in which only the ρeII, defined as the ratio of particle density (ρp) to a dynamic shape factor (χ), has the characteristic of being independent of particle size. However, it is still challenging to simultaneously characterize the Dve and ρeII of aspherical particles. Here, we present a novel system that classifies particles with their aerodynamic diameter (Da) by aerodynamic aerosol classifier (AAC) and determines their vacuum aerodynamic diameter (Dva) by single-particle aerosol mass spectrometry (SPAMS) to achieve a measurement of Dve and ρeII. The reliability of the AAC-SPAMS system for accurately obtaining Dve and ρeII is verified based on the result that the deviation between the measured and theoretical values is less than 6 % for the size-resolved spherical polystyrene latex (PSL). The AAC-SPAMS system was applied to characterize the Dve and ρeII of (NH4)2SO4 and NaNO3 particles, suggesting that these particles are aspherical and their ρeII is independent of particle size. Finally, the AAC-SPAMS system was deployed in a field measurement, showing that it is a powerful technique to characterize the chemically resolved Dve and ρeII of particles in real time.

Ferredoxin-thioredoxin reductase (FTR) is an iron-sulfur protein that supplies electrons from photochemically reduced ferredoxin (Fd) to thioredoxin (Trx) in the ferredoxin/thioredoxin system in chloroplasts. The FTR is a heterodimer with a variable subunit (FTRv) and a catalytic subunit (FTRc). The function of FTRv is not well known. In petunia (Petunia hybrida), FTRv is a single-copy gene, which is named PhFTRv. In this study, the spatio-temporal expression of PhFTRv in petunia was analyzed, and PhFTRv transcription was found to be high in leaves and stems. A tobacco rattle virus gene silencing was used in this study. Virus induced gene silencing-mediated PhFTRv silencing resulted in large yellow-green leaves, delayed flowering, and reduced cold tolerance in petunia plants.
