Abstract

Experimental fission studies for reaction physics or nuclear spectroscopy can profit from fast, efficient, and radiation-resistant fission fragment (FF) detectors. When such experiments are performed in-beam in intense thermal neutron beams, additional constraints arise in terms of target-detector interface, beam-induced background, etc. Therefore, wide gap semi-conductor detectors were tested with the aim of developing innovative instrumentation for such applications. The detector characterization was performed with mass- and energy-separated fission fragment beams at the ILL (Institut Laue Langevin) LOHENGRIN spectrometer. Two single crystal diamonds, three polycrystalline and one diamond-on-iridium as well as a silicon carbide detector were characterized as solid state ionization chamber for FF detection. Timing measurements were performed with a 500-µm thick single crystal diamond detector read out by a broadband amplifier. A timing resolution of ∼10.2 ps RMS was obtained for FF with mass A = 98 at 90 MeV kinetic energy. Using a spectroscopic preamplifier developed at INFN-Milano, the energy resolution measured for the same FF was found to be slightly better for a ∼50-µm thin single crystal diamond detector (∼1.4% RMS) than for the 500-µm thick one (∼1.6% RMS), while a value of 3.4% RMS was obtained with the 400-µm silicon carbide detector. The Pulse Height Defect (PHD), which is significant in silicon detectors, was also investigated with the two single crystal diamond detectors. The comparison with results from α and triton measurements enabled us to conclude that PHD leads to ∼50% loss of the initial generated charge carriers for FF. In view of these results, a possible detector configuration and integration for in-beam experiments has been discussed.

Abstract

Simulations of the emitter layer in 3C-SiC heterostructure solar cells were performed by means of SCAPS to model the optimal thickness and predict the influence on cell’s behaviour. Then, the cells have been elaborated by chemical vapor deposition and characterized. The opto-electrical measurements showed an improvement of the absorption of photons in the short wavelengths thanks to the thin layer of the emitter, and the non-degradation in bulk of the base cell. On the front side, the using of Ti/Au contacts also leads to an improvement in the absorption of photons thanks to the low series resistance.

Abstract

Mammography is the gold standard for detection of early breast cancer and it is still the only diagnostic tool which shows reduction of the mortality from that. Despite that, there is a high chance of false negatives that can lead to diagnostic errors resulting in delays of treatment and worsening of prognosis. The aim of this study is to analyze the rate of false negative in mammography and assess the source of diagnostic errors. Two radiologists have retrospectively evaluated 500 mammograms performed between January 2008 and December 2011 in Breast Imaging Clinic. 250 patients (Group A) had been operated for breast cancer and 250 patients (Group B) were healthy woman submitted to mammography according to the guideline for early detection of breast cancer. In Group A, 138 patients (55.2 %) were true missed cancer, 61 had minimal sign (24.4 %) and 53 were false negative (FN) (20.4 %). The source of errors amongst the FN were in 42 % of cases due to perception, in 15 % to interpretation, in 10 % to subtle/unusual lesion characteristics, in 9 % error for satisfaction of search, in 7 % to inherent limitations of mammography, in 4 % to poor technique and 13 % for inadequate clinical management. The diagnostic errors in breast clinic services are not negligible. The largest number of FN results from perception errors, misinterpretation and inadequate clinical management. These can be related to factors such as inattention, fatigue or lack of experience. To reduce it, it is necessary to have a dedicated multidisciplinary staff and adequate equipment and workloads.

Abstract

New data from mid-infrared free electron laser (FEL) oscillators operation are now available, we show that they can be reproduced on the basis of a fairly simple analysis. We use the recent experimental results from ELBE-FEL with a two-fold purpose: to provide a theoretical understanding of the experiment and to indicate the ways of improving the theoretical tools.

Abstract

We develop design considerations on the possibility of generating free electron laser radiation in the x-ray region of the spectrum (50–60 A), by exploiting a frequency multiplier scheme. We propose a free electron device consisting of a relatively low energy linac (750 MeV) and three sections: an oscillator at 150 nm, an amplifier tuned at the fifth harmonic of the first and a second amplifier operating at a subharmonic of the second amplifier. The seedless amplification is ensured by the e-beam bunching, induced in the oscillator and in the second section, which plays the role of amplifier and modulator. We also explore the possibility of overcoming the problems associated with the bunching efficiency dilution, due to intracavity saturation of the first section, by discussing the regeneration of the bunching by the use of a cavity dumping, realized with a suitable e-beam energy or cavity detuning modulation.

Abstract

We discuss the effect of the energy modulation over the macropulse of an e-beam driving a free electron lasers oscillator. It is shown that this modulation produces an efficient cavity depletion and provides an output optical beam, chopped at the same frequency of the beam energy modulation. The advantages offered by this method are discussed, with particular reference to the case of intracavity harmonic generation. The effective realization of an electron beam energy modulating device is finally discussed.

Abstract

This article describes LICENSE, an expert system that is able to automatically verify the compliance with legislative requirements, both structural and technological. These requirements have to be observed by a health facility, public or private, in order to be accredited and to work on behalf of the Regional Healthcare Service. The system consists of a web application that can be used by the hospital top management as well as by the clinical engineer or by the quality management office, so as to evaluate and monitor the hospital’s status. The evaluation is performed on the basis of the intended use of the premises, the surface, the number of beds or technical beds, and the class of the biomedical technologies available. The software’s structure has been made adaptable to the legislative changes through the creation of an associated database.

Abstract

The Hγ and Hδ absorption features are measured in a sample of 455 (out of an original 460) Lick/IDS stars with pseudo-equivalent width indices. For each Balmer feature, two definitions, involving a narrow (~20 A) and a wide (~40 A) central bandpass, are measured. These four new Balmer indices augment 21 indices previously determined by Worthey et al., and polynomial fitting functions that give index strengths as a function of stellar temperature, gravity, and [Fe/H] are provided. The new indices are folded into models for the integrated light of stellar populations, and predictions are given for single-burst stellar populations of a variety of ages and metallicities. Contrary to our initial hopes, the indices cannot break a degeneracy between burst age and burst strength in post-starburst objects, but they are successful mean-age indicators when used with sensitive metallicity indicators. An appendix gives data, advice, and examples of how to transform new spectra to the 25-index Lick/IDS system.

Abstract

The betatron part of the equations of motion of an electron beam, propagating in a linearly polarized undulator, can be derived from a quartic anharmonic oscillator Hamiltonian coupling the vertical and radial components. The relevant Liouville equation is solved, providing the evolution of the e‐beam phase‐space distribution, and analyze the variation, during the transport of quantities of physical interest. In particular, radial and vertical phase‐space contour plots which exhibit distortions, due to nonlinear effects, and consequent emittance growth are discussed. The integration method employed is based on a symmetric split technique of the evolution operator associated to the Liouville equation under study. Previous results from a macroparticle simulation are used as benchmark. Finally, the split operator technique naturally leads to area preserving maps.

25. Structural and electrical studies of partial dislocations and stacking faults in (11-20)-oriented 4H-SiC

Abstract

This paper presents cathodoluminescence, electrical and structural characteristics of (11-20)-oriented 4H-SiC substrates, aiming at determining properties of some extended defects. As-grown basal plane dislocations with the Burgers vector b = 1/3 < 11-20 > previously revealed to be associated to a radiative recombination level at 1.80 eV. Well controlled dislocations were here introduced by annealing the sample under compressive stress at 973 K. After the annealing, double stacking faults were detected, formed by two Shockley partial dislocations gliding in two successive basal planes. These defects proved to introduce a rectifying behaviour during forward voltage operation, with a corresponding barrier height value of 0.58 eV at room temperature. Cathodoluminescence measurements allowed to attribute a radiative level at 1.80 eV to the extended defects, giving rise to a double luminescence peak.

Temperature behaviour is also analysed since it differs from standard Silicon (Si) device behaviour.

Abstract

The more and more demanding requirements of the power device users bring the silicon technology very close to its own physical limits. Silicon carbide (SiC) appears today as the only semiconductor having the capability for significantly improving the ratings of major power components (such as high voltage Schottky rectifiers), indeed for creating novel devices for new applications. The choice of SiC comes from superior physical properties, an existing substrate commercialization, and an experimental confirmation of several potentialities (at high voltage, temperature, or frequency) via demonstrative prototypes. However, such a young technology still suffers from a too poor quality of the available basic materials, and from the fabrication step immaturity, delaying the SiC power electronics emergence.

Abstract

6H-SiC samples were amorphised by multiple Al implantations at room temperature, in order to study the annealing process. The paper deals with the influence of specific annealing conditions, such as furnace atmosphere and heating rate, on SiC reordering and Al profile. Below a certain deposited nuclear energy, solid phase epitaxy is possible and leads to recrystallisation under precise conditions (high heating rate, silicon partial pressure prescribed). Above it, material etching and dopant losses are observed, even though annealing has proven to be efficient for avoiding surface impairment (due to a specific cleaning process).

Abstract

The lack of a two-dimensional (2D) dopant standard and hence a priori knowledge of dopant distribution makes it impossible to unambiguously judge accuracy of any experimental or theoretical effort to characterize silicon doping in two-dimensions. Recently a strong progress has been made in quantitative scanning capacitance microscopy (SCM), scanning spreading resistance microscopy (SSRM), secondary electron (SE) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) doping profiling. Several research groups have claimed an ability of quantitative 2D dopant characterization. A round-robin study involving various analytical techniques and comprehensive numerical simulations should help to evaluate an accuracy of available quantitative techniques and set some helpful standard for further development. We report on a world-wide round-robin study performed on CMOS 2D test structures fabricated at Texas Instruments (TI). Seven research groups, which represent an advanced SCM, SSRM and TEM dopant profiling, participated in the study. Related process information and 1D dopant profiles measured by secondary ion mass-spectroscopy (SIMS) were released to the sites. Process simulator TSUPREM4 tuned using SIMS and inverse electrical modeling was employed to simulate 2D dopant distributions for both PMOS and NMOS test structures. Method-to-method variations in pn-junction position are noticeably higher than 10 nm, the spatial resolution requested by TCAD. The statistical scatter in pn-junction position varies from 10 to 30%. Although interpretation of the data is still a challenging problem, controlled and reproducible surface preparation is an important step, which may help to reduce the observed diversity of dopant characterization results. A round-robin study on test structure capable of electrical characterization should link round-robin results to device performance and hence is necessary.

Abstract

To achieve the requirements of the 45nm ITRS technology node and beyond, beamline implantation has reached its limit in terms of low energies. Plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII) is thus an alternative doping technique for the formation of ultrashallow junctions for source/drain extension in silicon devices. In this study, the authors present some results obtained on the PIII prototype called PULSION® designed by the IBS French company. In previous works [F. Torregrosa et al., Proceedings of the 14th International Conference on Ion Implant Technology, 2004 (unpublished); Proceedings of the 16th International Conference on Ion Implant Technology, 2006 (unpublished), p. 6], it has been shown that this machine offers the possibility to reach ultralow energy implantations and then to obtain implantation depths of only a few nanometers. Abstract

The spectrum of electromagnetic radiation of a relativistic electron moving in the magnetic field oscillating in two mutually transversal spatial directions with two different frequencies is analytically investigated. The spectral properties of radiation in the planar biharmonic undulator are also discussed. The technique based on the associated Bessel functions was effectively applied in our calculations. The effect of the magnetic field and the undulator parameters on the radiation of the fundamental as well as low and high harmonics was elucidated. It is demonstrated that the biharmonic undulator can be exploited to regulate the emission of certain selected harmonics and hence contribute to the development of the efficient devices with high extraction and narrow spectrum.

Abstract

The quasi-particle second Tamm-Dancoff (QSTD) microscopic theory described in previous publications is extended to include two- and four-proton quasi-particle (qp) and mixed two-proton-two-neutron qp excitations. The formalism is appropriate to describe spectra of « vibrational » spherical nuclei with unfilled shells of both neutrons and protons. Variants of this theory are described in which the microscopic two-qp QTD « phonons » are employed in the construction of the basis of a modified QSTD Hilbert space. Formulas are given for the electromagnetic moments and transition matrix elements of the nuclear states. The programmes are discussed of our current numerical applications to the analysis of the spectra of114Cd and of the even Ge isotopes.

Abstract

The formalism of the «projected states» is generalized to the odd-mass nuclei which can be treated as identical nucleon systems. The idea consists in picking out from the one-and three-quasi-particle states the components with a fixed particle number. The nuclear Hamiltonian is then diagonalized in the Hilbert space spanned by these components. Using this model we are able to reproduce the correct level sequence of117Sn. The force and the parameters are the same as those we used in a previous paper to fit the experimental data of the even isotopes starting from the appropriate projeeted model.

The quasi-particle second Tamm-Dancoff (QSTD) theory is applied to the study of even-parity states of even tin isotopes, and compared with the quasi-particle Tamm-Dancoff (QTD) theory. Numerical computations were performed with several Gaussian andP2 residual interaction potentials. In contrast to our previous results with a delta force, here our reasonable finite-range forces permit accounting for the 0+ states as well as for the 2+ and 4+ states. Four quasi-particle correlations are included in the ground state. The spurious states of the nucleon number operator are projected out. While the first excited 21+ and 41+ states are generally of almost pure two-quasi-particle character, the first excited 0+ state is quite of the 2qp–4qp mixed type. TheE2-transition probabilities andQ2, the quadrupole moments of the 21+-states are calculated and discussed. The QSTD values ofQ2 can be quite large because of the most important contributions of the mixed 2qp–4qp terms. For one of our Gaussian forcesQ2 (A=116)=+ 0.15 b, a value lying within the limits of the experimental errors. The theory is based on the spherical-shell model.

Abstract

We review the theory of free-electron laser (FEL) oscillators operating with tapered undulators. We have considered the case of a uniform tapering and introduced a parameter which characterizes the effect of the tapering on the gain and the saturation intensity. We have analyzed the effect of the tapering on the FEL dynamics by including the pulse propagation effects. We further analyze the importance of tapering as a tool to model the optical pulse shapes and to control the higher harmonic intensities.

Abstract

SPARC-X is a two branch project consisting in the SPARC test facility dedicated to the development and test of critical subsystems such as high brightness photoinjector and a modular expandable undulator for SASE-FEL experiments at 500 nm with seeding, and the SPARK facility aiming at generation of high brilliance coherent radiation in the 1.5-13 nm range, based on the achieved expertise. The projects are supported by MIUR (Research Department of Italian Government) and Regione Lazio. SPARC has completed the commissioning phase of the photoinjector in November 2006. The achieved experimental results are here summarized together with the status of the second phase commissioning plans. The SPARK project is based on the generation of ultra high peak brightness electron beams at the energy of 1 and 2 GeV generating radiation in the 1.5-13 nm range. The construction is at the moment planned in two steps starting with a 1 GeV Linac. The project layout including both RF-compression and magnetic chicane techniques has been studied.

Abstract

This paper describes the scientific aims and potentials as well as the preliminary technical design of RUDE, an innovative tool for multi-disciplinary investigations in a wide field of scientific, technological and industrial applications. IRIDE will be a high intensity "particles factory", based on a combination of high duty cycle radio-frequency superconducting electron linacs and of high energy lasers. Conceived to provide unique research possibilities for particle physics, for condensed matter physics, chemistry and material science, for structural biology and industrial applications, IRIDE will open completely new research possibilities and advance our knowledge in many branches of science and technology. 49. Extravasated contrast volumetric assessment on computed tomography angiography in gastrointestinal bleeding: A useful predictor of positive angiographic findings.

Abstract

Background: Gastrointestinal bleeding (GIB) is a severe and potentially life-threatening condition, especially in cases of delayed treatment. Computed tomography angiography (CTA) plays a pivotal role in the early identification of upper and lower GIB and in the prompt treatment of the haemorrhage., Aim: To determine whether a volumetric estimation of the extravasated contrast at CTA in GIB may be a predictor of subsequent positive angiographic findings., Methods: In this retrospective single-centre study, 35 patients (22 men; median age 69 years; range 16-92 years) admitted to our institution for active GIB detected at CTA and further submitted to catheter angiography between January 2018 and February 2022 were enrolled. Twenty-three (65.7%) patients underwent endoscopy before CTA. Bleeding volumetry was evaluated in both arterial and venous phases via a semi-automated dedicated software. Bleeding rate was obtained from volume change between the two phases and standardised for unit time. Patients were divided into two groups, according to the angiographic signs and their concordance with CTA., Results: Upper bleeding accounted for 42.9% and lower GIB for 57.1%. Mean haemoglobin value at the admission was 7.7 g/dL. A concordance between positive CTA and direct angiographic bleeding signs was found in 19 (54.3%) cases. Despite no significant differences in terms of bleeding volume in the arterial phase (0.55 mL vs 0.33 mL, P = 0.35), a statistically significant volume increase in the venous phase was identified in the group of patients with positive angiography (2.06 mL vs 0.9 mL, P = 0.02). In the latter patient group, a significant increase in bleeding rate was also detected (2.18 mL/min vs 0.19 mL/min, P = 0.02)., Conclusion: In GIB of any origin, extravasated contrast volumetric analysis at CTA could be a predictor of positive angiography and may help in avoiding further unnecessary procedures., Competing Interests: Conflict-of-interest statement: All the authors report no relevant conflicts of interest for this article., (©The Author(s) 2024. 50. Vascular Enlargement as a Predictor of Nodal Involvement in Bladder Cancer.

Abstract

In bladder cancer (BC), the evaluation of lymph node (LN) involvement at preoperative imaging lacks specificity. Since neoangiogenesis is paired with lymphatic involvement, this study aims to evaluate the presence of perivesical venous ectasia as an indirect sign of LN involvement, together with other conventional CT findings. All the patients who underwent radical cystectomy (RC) for BC between January 2017 and December 2019 with available preoperative contrast-enhanced CT (CECT) within 1 month before surgery were included. Patients without available pathological reports (and pTNM stage) or who underwent neoadjuvant treatments and palliative RC were excluded. Two readers in blind assessed the nodal shape and hilum, the short axis, and the contrast enhancement of suspicious pelvic LNs, the Largest Venous Diameter (LVD) efferent to the lesion, and the extravesical tumor invasion. In total, 38 patients (33 males) were included: 17 pT2, 17 pT3, 4 pT4; pN+: 20/38. LN short axis > 5 mm, LN enhancement, and LVD > 3 mm were significantly correlated with N+ at pathology. LVD > 3 mm had a significantly higher sensitivity and specificity (≥90%, AUC = 0.949) and was an independent predictor ( p = 0.0016).
