This research presents the sonocatalytic degradation of naphthalene from an aqueous medium using a zinc oxide (ZnO) catalyst synthesised by the thermal decomposition method. The present paper also aims to apply the response surface methodology for the evaluation of the effect of different parameters on the degradation rate. The optimum parameters were found to be 50 min of reaction time, 2.2 g/l of the ZnO catalyst mass, 30 °C, 280 V, and 80 mg/l of initial concentration under a constant ultrasonic treatment at 20 kHz and 260 W of power intensity. The elemental composition of the catalyst was as follows: Zn 25.18%, O 37.03%, Mg 3.20%, K 0.83%, Ca 4.05%, N 5.07%, Na 4.13%, Cl 3.43%, and Fe 0.32%. Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR) confirmed the Zn–O bond stretching at 510 cm−1. The degradation efficiency of naphthalene was almost double when the ZnO catalyst was used. The naphthalene degradation rate was a first-order reaction. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) results show that the quadratic model is suitable for the obtained data (P-value = 0.0001) and in an optimal process, performance conditions were set equal to 100%. Regression analysis with a high correlation coefficient (R2 = 0.989) and the model F-value of 6.94 indicated the adequacy of the model. The reusability study revealed that ZnO as a catalyst sustained the catalytic activity over five cycles.

Lignocellulosic materials (LMs) are abundant feedstocks with excellent potential for biofuels and biocommodities production. In particular, nut and coffee wastes are rich in biomolecules, e.g. sugars and polyphenols, the valorisation of which still has to be fully disclosed. This study investigated the effectiveness of ultrasounds coupled with hydrothermal (i.e. ambient temperature vs 80 °C) and methanol (MeOH)-based pretreatments for polyphenols and sugar solubilisation from hazelnut skin (HS), almond shell (AS), and spent coffee grounds (SCG). The liquid fraction obtained from the pretreated HS was the most promising in terms of biomolecules solubilisation. The highest polyphenols, i.e. 123.9 (±2.3) mg/g TS, and sugar, i.e. 146.0 (±3.4) mg/g TS, solubilisation was obtained using the MeOH-based medium. However, the MeOH-based media were not suitable for direct anaerobic digestion (AD) due to the MeOH inhibition during AD. The water-based liquors obtained from pretreated AS and SCG exhibited a higher methane potential, i.e. 434.2 (±25.1) and 685.5 (±39.5) mL CH4/g glucosein, respectively, than the HS liquors despite having a lower sugar concentration. The solid residues recovered after ultrasounds pretreatment were used as substrates for AD as well. Regardless the pretreatment condition, the methane potential of the ultrasounds pretreated HS, AS, and SCG was not improved, achieving maximally 255.4 (±7.4), 42.8 (±3.3), and 366.2 (±4.2) mL CH4/g VS, respectively. Hence, the solid and liquid fractions obtained from HS, AS, and SCG showed great potential either as substrates for AD or, in perspective, for biomolecules recovery in a biorefinery context.

Pyritic minerals generally occur in nature together with other trace metals as impurities, that can be released during the ore oxidation. To investigate the role of such impurities, the presence of copper (Cu(II)), arsenic (As(III)) and nickel (Ni(II)) during pyrite mediated autotrophic denitrification has been explored in this study at 30 °C with a specialized microbial community of denitrifiers as inoculum. The three metal(loid)s were supplemented at an initial concentration of 2, 5, and 7.5 ppm and only Cu(II) had an inhibitory effect on the autotrophic denitrification. The presence of As(III) and Ni(II) enhanced the nitrate removal efficiency with autotrophic denitrification rates between 3.3 [7.5 ppm As(III)] and 1.6 [7.5 ppm Ni(II)] times faster than the experiment without any metal(loid) supplementation. The Cu(II) batches, instead, decreased the denitrification kinetics with 16, 40 and 28% compared to the no-metal(loid) control for the 2, 5 and 7.5 ppm incubations, respectively. The kinetic study revealed that autotrophic denitrification with pyrite as electron donor, also with Cu(II) and Ni(II) additions, fits better a zero-order model, while the As(III) incubation followed first-order kinetic. The investigation of the extracellular polymeric substances content and composition showed more abundance of proteins, fulvic and humic acids in the metal(loid) exposed biomass. Graphical Abstract

A novel combination of advanced gas-chromatography and detection systems coupled to a buffer-gas cell was characterized on-line to allow gas-phase chemical studies of accelerator-produced short-lived α -decaying mercury, francium, and astatine isotopes. These were produced in 40Ar- and 48Ca-induced nuclear fusion–evaporation reactions, subsequently isolated in the recoil separators MARS at Texas A&M University, USA, and TASCA at GSI Darmstadt, Germany, before being thermalized in a buffer-gas-stopping cell. From the latter, the nuclear reaction products were extracted into gas-phase chromatographic systems, suitable for registering α -decaying short-lived radionuclides, such as isotopes of superheavy elements. Efficiencies of 21(3)% for 204-209Fr were reached for the extraction into the optimized miniCOMPACT gas-chromatography setup, indicating that this technique enables the identification of isotopes of volatile as well as non-volatile elements. These studies guide the path towards chemical investigations of superheavy elements beyond flerovium, which are out of reach with currently used setups.

The microbial community and extracellular polymeric substances composition of anaerobic granular sludge exposed to selenate (~10 mg/L), cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn) (~2 and 5 mg/L) were investigated by high-throughput sequencing and fluorescence excitation emission matrix (FEEM) spectra, respectively. As a response to selenate, Cd and/or Zn exposure, significant fluorescence quenching of fulvic-like acids and humic-like substances was observed. With selenate, Cd and/or Zn in the influent with respective concentrations of 10, 5 and 5 mg/L, the abundance of the phyla Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Spirochaetae, Cloacimonetes and Synergistetes increased significantly, and the dominant taxa in the anaerobic granular sludge exposed to Se, Cd and/or Zn were Halothiobacillaceae (10.2%), Pseudomonas (8.8%), Synergistaceae (7.7%), Spirochaetaceae (7.2%), Blvii28 wastewater sludge group (6.7%), Telmatospirillum (4.6%), Veillonellaceae (4.3%), Geobacter (4.0%) and Enterobacteriaceae (3.0%). Compared with the inoculum, the abundance of the archaea Methanobacterium and Methanosaeta decreased to below detection limit in the UASB reactor after 116 days exposure to Se, Cd and Zn.

Volatile fatty acids (VFAs) and alcohols generated from acidogenic processes are valuable bioresources. However, how the diversity of acidogenic microorganisms and environmental factors affect their generation are still poorly understood. In this study, 18 different inocula and 42 sludges from acidogenic lab-scale reactors were collected to analyze the microbial communities and their metabolic potential using 16S rRNA genes high throughput sequencing coupled with PICRUSt2. 23 out of 30732 distinctive amplicon sequence variants were identified as the core features and 34.8% of them (e.g., Clostridium spp.) were positively correlated with the generation of the most common product acetate. PICRUSt2 shows that an average of 27% of predicted fermentation-pathway genes was assigned to the core features, suggesting their crucial roles in acidogenesis. From the network aspect, the acidogenic network had a slightly higher number of nodes (12%), but significantly lower numbers of edges (109%) and neighbors (132%) compared with the inoculum network. A total of 28 independent subnetworks from large to small scales were extracted from the acidogenic network. The decentralized distribution of core features in these subnetworks emphasized their non-co-occurring relationships. The electrode potential was the most significant environmental variable (48.2–49.3% of the explanation), positively affecting the distribution of more than 50% of the core features and fermentation pathways. Results of this study emphasized the importance of core features rather than microbial diversity in acidogenic performance and highlighted the response of the core microbial community to environmental changes, which may be applied in practical applications to optimize acidogenic performance.

Lactic acid production through fermentation is an established technology, however, improvements are necessary to reduce the process costs and to decrease its market price. Lactic acid is used in many industrial sectors and its market has increased in the last decade for its use as the raw material for polylactic acid product. Using food waste as a cheap and renewable substrate, as well as fermentation at uncontrolled pH, helps to make the production cheaper and to simplify the downstream purification process. Lactic acid production at acidic conditions and the role of varying organic loading rate (OLR) and hydraulic retention time (HRT) were tested in two different semicontinuous batch fermentation systems. Reactor performances indicated that lactic acid fermentation was still possible at pH Lactobacillus strains, the organism mainly responsible for lactic acid conversion from carbohydrates. This study shows that low pH fermentation is a key parameter to improve lactic acid production from food waste in a semicontinuous system. Acidic pH favored both the selection of Lactobacillus strains and inhibited VFA producers from utilizing lactic acid as primary substrate, thus promoting the accumulation of lactic acid. Finally, production yields tend to decrease with high OLR and low HRT, while lactic acid production rates showed the opposite trend.

Lignocellulosic residues (LRs) are one of the most abundant wastes produced worldwide. Nevertheless, unlocking the full energy potential from LRs for biofuel production is limited by their complex structure. This study investigated the effect of N-methylmorpholine N-oxide (NMMO) pretreatment on almond shell (AS), spent coffee grounds (SCG), and hazelnut skin (HS) to improve their bioconversion to methane. The pretreatment was performed using a 73% NMMO solution heated at 120 °C for 1, 3, and 5 h. The baseline methane productions achieved from raw AS, SCG, and HS were 54.7 (± 5.3), 337.4 (± 16.5), and 265.4 (± 10.4) mL CH4/g VS, respectively. The NMMO pretreatment enhanced the methane potential of AS up to 58%, although no changes in chemical composition and external surface were observed after pretreatment. Opposite to this, pretreated SCG showed increased porosity (up to 63%) and a higher sugar percentage (up to 27%) after pretreatment despite failing to increase methane production. All pretreatment conditions were effective on HS, achieving the highest methane production of 400.4 (± 9.5) mL CH4/g VS after 5 h pretreatment. The enhanced methane production was due to the increased sugar percentage (up to 112%), lignin removal (up to 29%), and loss of inhibitory compounds during the pretreatment. An energy assessment revealed that the NMMO pretreatment is an attractive technology to be implemented on an industrial scale for energy recovery from HS residues.

[Abstract] Butanol is a potential renewable fuel. To increase the selectivity for butanol during CO fermentation, exogenous acetic acid and ethanol, exogenous butyric acid or endogenous butyric acid from glucose fermentation have been investigated using CO as reducing power, with a highly enriched Clostridium sludge. Addition of 3.2 g/L exogenous butyric acid led to the highest 1.9 g/L butanol concentration with a conversion efficiency of 67%. With exogenous acetate and ethanol supply, the butanol concentration reached 1.6 g/L at the end of the incubation. However, the presence of acetic acid and ethanol favoured butanol production to 2.6 g/L from exogenous butyric acid by the enriched sludge. Finally, exogenous 14 g/L butyric acid yielded the highest butanol production of 3.4 g/L, which was also among the highest butanol concentration from CO/syngas fermentation reported so far. CO addition triggered butanol production from endogenous butyric acid (produced from glucose, Glucose + N2) with as high as 58.6% conversion efficiency and 62.1% butanol yield. However, no efficient butanol production was found from glucose and CO co-fermentation (Glucose + CO), although a similar amount of endogenous butyric acid was produced compared to Glucose + N2. The Clostridium genus occupied a relative abundance as high as 82% from the initial inoculum, while the Clostridia and Bacilli classes were both enriched and dominated in Glucose + N2 and Glucose + CO incubations. This study shows that the supply of butyric acid is a possible strategy for enhancing butanol production by CO fed anaerobic sludge, either via exogenous butyric acid, or via endogenous production by sugar fermentation. Aerobic granular sludge (AGS) is a promising biotechnology for the treatment of antibiotic-rich wastewater. However, little is known about the antibiotics degradation mechanism and microbial response in a sulfamethoxazole (SMX)-loaded AGS system. Herein, the results of a continuous 240 days test suggested that 0.5-5 mg/L of SMX could be thoroughly removed by AGS via adsorption and degradation. The degradation pathway of SMX involved the hydrolysis of the sulfonamide bond and cleavage of NS or CS bonds, subsequently leading to the production of small molecular substances (e.g. benzene and 5-methyl-isoxazole). In terms of the AGS system, it exhibited a strong resistance to 0.5 mg/L of SMX, while 1 and 5 mg/L of SMX significantly inhibited the microbial growth, declined the nitrification efficiency, weakened the sludge settleability, and triggered the excessive growth of filamentous bacteria. Besides, the secretion of extracellular polymer substances was suppressed by 57.3% when increasing the SMX concentration from 0.5 to 5 mg/L, which was not conducive to the system stability. The long-term presence of SMX enhanced the proliferation of antibiotics resistance genes (sul1and sul2) and exerted a strong selection pressure on the microbial community, especially with Thiothrix being the dominating genus. Overall, this study elucidated that AGS qualified promising application prospects in the removal of SMX present in wastewater, but SMX at high concentrations posed great adverse impacts on the performance of the AGS system, which causes concern when treating SMX rich wastewaters.

An anaerobic granular sludge was enriched to utilize H2/CO2 in a continuous gas-fed up-flow anaerobic sludge reactor by applying operating conditions expected to produce acetic acid, butyric acid and ethanol. Three stages of fermentation were found: Stage I with acetic acid accumulation with the highest concentration of 35 mM along with a pH decrease from initial 6 to 4.5. In Stage II, H2/CO2 was replaced by 100% H2 to induce solventogenesis, whereas butyric acid was produced with the highest concentration of 2.5 mM. At Stage III with 10 μM tungsten (W) addition, iso-valeric acid, valeric acid and caproic acid were produced at pH 4.5 -5.0. In the batch tests inoculated with the enriched sludge taken from the bioreactor (day 70), however, methane production occurred at pH 6. Exogenous 15 mM acetate addition enhanced both the H2 and CO2 consumption rate compared to exogenous 10, 30 and 45 mM acetate by the enriched sludge. Exogenous acetate failed to be converted to ethanol using H2 as electron donor by the enriched acetogens.

Carbon monoxide (CO)-metabolizing Clostridium spp. were enriched from the biomass of a butanol-producing reactor. After six successive biomass transfers, ethanol production reached as much as 11.8 g/L with minor accumulation of acetic acid, under intermittent gas feeding conditions and over a wide pH range of 6.45–4.95. The molar ratio of ethanol to acetic acid exceeded 1.7 after the lag phase of 11 days and reached its highest value of 8.6 during the fermentation process after 25 days. Although butanol production was not significantly enhanced in the enrichment, the biomass was able to convert exogenous butyric acid (3.2 g/L) into butanol with nearly 100% conversion efficiency using CO as reducing power. This suggested that inhibition of butanol production from CO was caused by the lack of natural butyric acid production, expectedly induced by unsuitable pH values due to initial acidification resulting from the acetic acid production. The enriched Clostridium population also converted glucose to formic, acetic, propionic, and butyric acids in batch tests with daily pH adjustment to pH 6.0. The Clostridium genus was enriched with its relative abundance significantly increasing from 7% in the inoculum to 94% after five successive enrichment steps. Unidentified Clostridium species showed a very high relative abundance, reaching 73% of the Clostridium genus in the enriched sludge (6th transfer).

Biological reduction of selenium oxyanions is widely used for selenium removal from wastewater. The process is, however, limited by the availability of a suitable, efficient and low cost electron donor. © 2019 Fusion-evaporation reactions with the doubly magic projectile 48 Ca were used to access neutron-deficient nuclei around neptunium at the velocity filter SHIP, and investigated using the COMPASS decay spectroscopy station. With the use of digital electronics, several isotopes produced via neutron, proton, and α evaporation channels were identified by establishing correlated α-decay chains with short-lived sub-μs members. Data are given on decay chains stemming from 225,226 Np, 225 U, and 222,223 Pa. New information on the isotopes 225,226 Np and 222 Pa was obtained. Production cross sections of nuclei in the region using a variety of projectiles are discussed. Azo dyes wastewater is characterized by high-salinity, however, the biodegradation performance and mechanisms of azo dyes by aerobic granular sludge (AGS) under different salinity levels are still unclear. Herein, the results showed that the reactor performance was almost unaffected at low-salinity levels (0.5%-1.0% salinity), and the removal efficiency of acid orange 7 (AO7) was increased by 2.6%-19.1%, possibly due to the excessive secretion of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and the enrichment of functional bacteria. Nevertheless, the microbial cell viability was negatively affected by high-salinity level (2.0% salinity), leading to the deterioration of AO7 and nutrient removal efficiencies. The AO7 removal was achieved by rapid adsorption and slow biodegradation. The biodegradation pathway indicated that AO7 was gradually mineralized in the AGS system through desulfurization, deamination, decarboxylation and hydroxylation. Altogether, this work provides an important reference for the application of AGS technology for treating saline azo dye wastewaters.

A nuclear spectroscopy experiment was conducted to study α-decay chains stemming from isotopes of flerovium (element Z=114). An upgraded TASISpec decay station was placed behind the gas-filled separator TASCA at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum fur Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt, Germany. The fusion-evaporation reactions ^{48}Ca+^{242}Pu and ^{48}Ca+^{244}Pu provided a total of 32 flerovium-candidate decay chains, of which two and eleven were firmly assigned to ^{286}Fl and ^{288}Fl, respectively. A prompt coincidence between a 9.60(1)-MeV α particle event and a 0.36(1)-MeV conversion electron marked the first observation of an excited state in an even-even isotope of the heaviest man-made elements, namely ^{282}Cn. Spectroscopy of ^{288}Fl decay chains fixed Q_{α}=10.06(1) MeV. In one case, a Q_{α}=9.46(1)-MeV decay from ^{284}Cn into ^{280}Ds was observed, with ^{280}Ds fissioning after only 518 μs. The impact of these findings, aggregated with existing data on decay chains of ^{286,288}Fl, on the size of an anticipated shell gap at proton number Z=114 is discussed in light of predictions from two beyond-mean-field calculations, which take into account triaxial deformation.

CO2 fermentation by biocatalysis is a promising route for the sustainable production of valuable chemicals and fuels, such as acetic acid and ethanol. Considering the important role of environmental parameters on fermentation processes, granular sludge from an industrial anaerobic wastewater treatment system was tested as inoculum for ethanol production from H2/CO2 at psychrophilic (18°C), submesophilic (25°C), and mesophilic (30°C) temperatures. The highest acetic acid and ethanol production was obtained at 25°C with a final concentration of 29.7 and 8.8 mM, respectively. The presence of bicarbonate enhanced acetic acid production 3.0 ∼ 4.1-fold, while inhibiting ethanol production. The addition of 0.3 g/L glucose induced butyric acid production (3.7 mM), while 5.7 mM ethanol was produced at the end of the incubation at pH 4 with glucose. The addition of 10 μM W enhanced ethanol production up to 3.8 and 7.0-fold compared to, respectively, 2 μM W addition and the control. The addition of 2 μM Mo enhanced ethanol production up to 8.1- and 5.4-fold compared to, respectively, 10 μM Mo and the control. This study showed that ethanol production from H2/CO2 conversion using granular sludge as the inoculum can be optimized by selecting the operational temperature and by trace metal addition., Graphical Abstract Bioethanol from H2/CO2 by solventogenesis using anaerobic granular sludges.

The photo-granule process is an effective and economically feasible alternative for wastewater treatment, but little information is available regarding how to speed up the photo-granulation process. In this study, the effect of inoculum aerobic granular sludge (AGS) size on the start-up of the photo-granule process was investigated under low aeration conditions (superficial gas velocity of 0.5 cm/s). For this purpose, the inoculum AGS was sorted into various size-categories (0.4-0.8 mm, 0.8-1.4 mm, 1.4-2.2 mm, and2.2 mm) to serve as individual inoculum sludge. The electron-capture decay followed by a prompt fission process was searched for in the hitherto unknown most neutron-deficient Md isotope with mass number 244. Alpha decay with $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-particle energies of 8.73--8.86 MeV and with a half-life of ${0.30}_{\ensuremath{-}0.09}^{+0.19}\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{s}$ was assigned to $^{244}\mathrm{Md}$. No fission event with a similar half-life potentially originating from spontaneous fissioning of the short-lived electron-capture decay daughter $^{244}\mathrm{Fm}$ was observed, which results in an upper limit of 0.14 for the electron-capture branching of $^{244}\mathrm{Md}$. Two groups of fission events with half-lives of ${0.9}_{\ensuremath{-}0.3}^{+0.6}\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{ms}$ and ${5}_{\ensuremath{-}2}^{+3}\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{ms}$ were observed. The ${0.9}_{\ensuremath{-}0.3}^{+0.6}\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{ms}$ activity was assigned to originate from the decay of $^{245}\mathrm{Md}$. The origin of eight fission events resulting in a half-life of ${5}_{\ensuremath{-}2}^{+3}\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{ms}$ could not be unambiguously identified within the present data while the possible explanation has to invoke previously unseen physics cases.

Lipid-containing wastewaters, such as those arising from dairy processing, are frequently discharged at temperatures ≤ 20°C. Their valorization at low ambient temperatures offers opportunities to expand the application of high-rate anaerobic wastewater treatment toward achieving energy neutrality by minimizing the energy demand for heating. Lipid hydrolysis generates long-chain fatty acids (LCFAs), which incur operational challenges and hinder stable bioreactor operation by inducing sludge flotation and washout, coupled with the added challenge of treatment at lower temperature (20°C). These challenges are tackled together uniquely during the treatment of LCFA-rich synthetic dairy wastewater (SDW) (33% COD-LCFA) through de novo formed microbial granular sludge within the dynamic sludge chamber–fixed film (DSC-FF) reactor. The novel reactor design facilitated sludge retention for the entire operational period of 150 days by containing settled, flotating, and LCFA-encapsulated granular sludge and biofilm within a single module. High COD removal efficiencies (87–98%) were achieved in the three replicated DSC-FF reactors, along with complete LCFA removal at 18–72 h HRT (LCFA loading rate of 220–890 mgCOD-LCFA/L⋅day) and partial LCFA removal at 12 h HRT (LCFA loading rate of 1333 mgCOD-LCFA/L⋅day). The high removal efficiencies of unsaturated and saturated LCFAs achieved are reported for the first time during continuous anaerobic wastewater treatment at low temperatures (20°C). Moreover, de novo granulation was achieved within 8 days from a combination of inoculum mixtures at a high LCFA concentration (33% COD-LCFA) in SDW. The results demonstrate the feasibility of the DSC-FF reactor for treating LCFA-rich wastewaters at discharge temperatures and offer potential for expanded and more energetically productive anaerobic valorization of lipid-rich wastewater.

The process dynamics of anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) coupled to sulfate reduction (SR), and the potential role of elemental sulfur as intermediate are presented in this paper. Thermodynamic screening and experimental evidence from the literature conclude that a prominent model to describe AOM-SR is based on the concept that anaerobic methane oxidation proceeds through the production of the intermediate elemental sulfur. Two microbial groups are involved in the process: (a) anaerobic methanotrophs (ANME-2) and (b) Desulfosarcina/Desulfococcus sulfur reducers cluster (DSS). In this work, a dynamic model was developed to explore the interactions between biotic and abiotic processes to simulate the microbial activity, the chemical composition and speciation of the liquid phase, and the gas phase composition in the reactor headspace. The model includes the microbial kinetics for the symbiotic growth of ANME-2 and DSS, mass transfer phenomena between the gas and liquid phase for methane, hydrogen sulfide, and carbon dioxide and acid-base reactions for bicarbonate, sulfide, and ammonium. A data set from batch experiments, running for 250 days in artificial seawater inoculated with sediment from Marine Lake Grevelingen (The Netherlands) was used to calibrate the model. The inherent characteristics of AOM-SR make the identification of the kinetic parameters difficult due to the high correlation between them. However, by meaningfully selecting a set of kinetic parameters, the model simulates successfully the experimental data for sulfate reduction and sulfide production. The model can be considered as the basic structure for simulating continuous flow three-phase engineered systems based on AOM-SR.
