Introduction: Prevention of accidents and work related diseases, are not allowed regardless of the safety of employees, customers, contractors and other persons. Assessment of individual safety management activities could reduce many losses. Present study aimed to evaluate the safety management of a household appliance manufacturing company. .Material and Method: This study has done in a household appliance manufacturing company in Damavand city. Two questionnaires were firstly designed based on the weighted scores. The questionnaire 1 consisted of 4 indicators: Safety of machinery, Electrical safety, Risk assessment and Fire safety. Questionnaire 2 consisted of 11 sub indicators. Both questionnaires were completed by 30 HSE experts and supervisors. Reliability of questionnaires was based on cronbachs alpha coefficient. the safety status of each unit was determined and scored using information acquired by the questionnaires. Lastly, the safety of the entire company was determined. .Result: Results showed that in safety management: the pressing and store house were in a good range of 66.66 and 60.12 points. Powder painting, enameling, laboratory were in a average range of 56.25, 55.92 and 54.15 points. Assembling and door storage were in a week range of 46.06 points. .Conclusion: The findings showed that the safety status in the studied appliances company is in average range with 55.45 points. Therefore, it is recommended that the safety indicators should be improved for the betterment of the safety management in the company.

This study has examined defense styles in Iranian samples with psychometric properties Defens Style Questionaaire(DSQ-40). 1067 subjects are (666 high school students , age mean:16.61 SD :1.13 and 401 university students , age mean:21.3 ,SD : 3.8, 527 female, 540 male) that participated in this investigation. Internal consistency, concurrent validity , content validity , test-retest and cronbach α in Defense Style Questionaaire for Iraninan sample were computed. Results showed appears the DSQ-40 to be a reliable(α = /81-/87)and valid instrument (Its properties concerning content validity, concurrent validity and construct validity)for Iraninan sample .

Extreme heat and air pollution exposure are leading causes of adverse cardiorespiratory health outcomes. Exposure reduction strategies are often focused at the local level. This study examined critical challenges community leaders face in understanding and sharing environmental exposure and health information. We conducted interviews with 19 community leaders of two urban environmental justice communities in Massachusetts, United States. Using directed content analysis, we examined air quality and heat perceptions, information and data resources, and barriers to understanding and communicating relevant local information. Participants shared concerns about both poor air quality and extreme heat. They also expressed the opinion that exposure risk information about these topics is siloed; heat and air quality data can be hard to access, interpret, and effectively communicate with community members. Solutions recommended by participants included community engagement, open-data portals, and creative science communication. The role of inflammation has been proven in acute myocardial infarction (AMI) pathogenesis. Due to the effect of NLRP3 gene expression in the inflammation process of MI, we aimed to explore the expression changes and diagnostic power of four inflammation-related miRNAs including miR-17-3p, miR-101-3p, miR-335-3p, miR-296-3p and their potential target, NLRP3, in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), and non-STEMI (NSTEMI) patients as two major classes of AMI. The expression level of these genes were evaluated in 300 participants equally divided into three groups of STEMI, NSTEMI, and control using quantitative real-time PCR. The expression level of NLRP3 was upregulated in STEMI and NSTEMI patients compared to control subjects. Besides, the expression levels of miR-17-3p, miR-101-3p, and miR-296-3p were significantly downregulated in STEMI and NSTEMI patients compared to controls. The increased expression of NLRP3 had a very strong inverse correlation with miR-17-3p in patients with STEMI and with miR-101-3p in the STEMI and NSTEMI patients. ROC curve analysis showed that the expression level of miR-17-3p had the highest diagnostic power for discrimination between STEMI patients and controls. Remarkably, the combination of all markers resulted in a higher AUC. In summary, there is a significant association between the expression levels of miR-17-3p, miR-101-3p, miR-335-3p, miR-296-3p, and NLRP3 and the incidence of AMI. Although the miR-17-3p expression level has the highest diagnostic power to distinguish between STEMI patients and control subjects, the combination of these miRNAs and NLRP3 could serve as a novel potential diagnostic biomarker of STEMI., (© 2023. Background: Extreme heat is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality during summer months in the United States. Risk of heat exposure and associated health outcomes are disproportionately experienced by people with lower incomes, people of color, and/or immigrant populations., Methods: As qualitative research on the experiences of residents in heat islands is limited, this community-based study examined barriers and coping strategies for keeping cool among residents of Chelsea and East Boston, Massachusetts-environmental justice (EJ) areas that experience the urban heat island effect-through semistructured interviews and qualitative content analysis., Results: Results indicate that all participants ( n  = 12) had air conditioning, but high energy bills contributed to low use. Eight participants were self-described heat-sensitive, with five experiencing poor health in heat. In addition, nine reported insufficient hydration due to work schedules, distaste of water, or perceptions of it being unsafe., Discussion: This research highlights the importance of understanding perceptions of residents in EJ communities to contextualize vulnerability and identify multipronged heat coping strategies and targeted interventions., Competing Interests: No competing financial interests exist., (© Alina M. Background and Objectives: In clinical diagnostics, molecular methods are used to detect Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacilli (MTB) and to distinguish them from non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM). They are also used to make the right treatment decision for the patient as soon as possible. The aim of this study was to establish a rapid and novel multiplex PCR (mPCR) assay for the detection and differentiation of MTB and NTM in a single tube., Materials and Methods: 100 sputum samples positive for acid-fast bacilli (AFB) were included in this study. Mycobacterial culture, biochemical tests, and antibiotic susceptibility testing were performed on samples. After alkaline decontamination, total DNA was extracted from the samples. A primer pair targeting the rpoB gene, encoding the beta-subunit of RNA polymerase, was used to detect MTB and NTM, amplifying a 235-bp fragment of MTB and a 136-bp sequence of NTM. A pair of primers targeting a 190-bp fragment of the IS6110 region of MTB was also used to confirm the results. The sensitivity and specificity of the mPCR assay were evaluated using DNA extracted from standard strains. The amplified products were then analyzed by conventional agarose gel electrophoresis., Results: Of 100 AFB smear-positive sputum samples, 92 MTB DNA, 7 NTM DNA, and one mixed-infection sample were identified in a single tube using mPCR assay. There was no correlation between the AFB degree of smear positivity and PCR results. Of seven NTM isolates, 6 (86%) were resistant to rifampin, isoniazid, and ethambutol, the three first-line anti-tuberculosis drugs., Conclusion: A single-tube mPCR assay based on the rpoB gene provides a rapid and reliable means of detecting and differentiating MTB and NTM in sputum specimens., (Copyright © 2023 The Authors. This study describes an efficient antimicrobial drug delivery system composed of iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles (Fe 3 O 4 NPs) coated by an MOF-199 network. Then, the prepared vancomycin (VAN)-loaded carrier was fully packed in a lattice of beta-cyclodextrin (BCD). For cell adhesion, beta-cyclodextrin has been functionalized with guanidine (Gn) groups within in situ synthetic processes. Afterward, drug loading efficiency and the release patterns were investigated through precise analytical methods. Confocal microscopy has shown that the prepared cargo (formulated as [VAN@Fe 3 O 4 /MOF-199]BCD-Gn) could be attached to the Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) and Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) bacterial cells in a higher rate than the individual VAN. The presented system considerably increased the antibacterial effects of the VAN with a lower dosage of drug. The cellular experiments such as the zone of inhibition and optical density (OD 600 ) have confirmed the enhanced antibacterial effect of the designed cargo. In addition, the MIC/MBC (minimum inhibitory and bactericidal concentrations) values have been estimated for the prepared cargo compared to the individual VAN, revealing high antimicrobial potency of the VAN@Fe 3 O 4 /MOF-199]BCD-Gn cargo.

Background: SIRT1 and HDAC 9 genes are related to inflammation and may contribute to the pathogenesis of coronary artery disease (CAD). We aimed to evaluate the expression level, methylation profile and polymorphisms of these genes in CAD patients., Methods: In this study, 50 CAD patients and 50 healthy individuals were recruited. The expression level change was evaluated using the TaqMan Real-Time PCR method. The methylation of genes promoter and genotyping of polymorphisms were evaluated by the HRM., Results: The expression level of SIRT1 was reduced while the HDAC9 expression level showed a significant elevation ( p  < .001). The SIRT1 gene promoter was hypomethylated and the HDAC9 gene promoter was hypermethylated in CAD patients. Also, CG + GG genotype in SIRT1 and both genotypes in the HDAC9 gene were associated with expression change., Conclusions: SIRT1 and HDAC9 genes, expression changes can be suggested as a potential biomarker for CAD detection.

Today, various drug delivery systems (DDS) are utilized to carry and deliver the desired drugs to the targeted action area to reduce potential side effects and negative interactions. Nanomaterials are an excellent candidate for the delivery of potent drugs, as they enhance pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties. Herein, we present a new ciprofloxacin (CPFX) delivery system based on a polymeric nanocarrier (β-cyclodextrin) conjugated to a cell-adhesive dipeptide structure. Cyclodextrin (CD) is an inexpensive, easily accessible, biodegradable, and biocompatible material. Also, the conjugation of cysteine-arginine (CR) dipeptide to the CPFX/β-CD particles is carried out to enhance cell adhesion growth. Through accurate analysis, the drug content and release for a final product have been estimated to be ca. 32%. Overall, the antimicrobial effects of CPFX were considerably raised through a low dose of CPFX. The growth zone inhibition of CPFX/β-CD-CR particles on the staphylococcus aureus and the Escherichia coli bacterial cells was 5.5 ± 0.2 cm and 3.5 ± 0.2 cm, respectively. The growing frequency, intensity, and duration of extreme heat events necessitates interventions to reduce heat exposures. Local opportunities for heat adaptation may be optimally identified through collection of both quantitative exposure metrics and qualitative data on perceptions of heat. In this study, we used mixed methods to characterize heat exposure among urban residents in the area of Boston, Massachusetts, US, in summer 2020. Repeated interviews of N = 24 study participants ascertained heat vulnerability and adaptation strategies. Participants also used low-cost sensors to collect temperature, location, sleep, and physical activity data. We saw significant differences across temperature metrics: median personal temperature exposures were 3.9 °C higher than median ambient weather station temperatures. Existing air conditioning (AC) units did not adequately control indoor temperatures to desired thermostat levels: even with AC use, indoor maximum temperatures increased by 0.24 °C per °C of maximum outdoor temperature. Sleep duration was not associated with indoor or outdoor temperature. On warmer days, we observed a range of changes in time-at-home, expected given our small study size. Interview results further indicated opportunities for heat adaptation interventions including AC upgrades, hydration education campaigns, and amelioration of energy costs during high heat periods. Our mixed methods design informs heat adaptation interventions tailored to the challenges faced by residents in the study area. Background: Breast cancer survival rate is an important index for assessment of treatment effect in reducing the mortality. Weaimed to determine the fifteen-year survival rate for breast cancer at a referral center in Iran and its correlated factors., Methods: This survival study enrolled patients with breast cancer who referred to Motamed Cancer Institute (MCI) from 1998 to2016. The survival rate was calculated using the Kaplan-Meier method. The relationship of demographic, clinical and therapeuticfactors with overall survival (OS) was studied using Cox's proportional hazard model., Results: Totally, 3443 patients were studied. Their mean age and follow-up period were 47.7 (±11.43) years and 61.66 (±52.1)months, respectively. The median follow-up time was 48.4 months (range: 1-413 months), 49.7% of the patients had high schoolor higher education, and 71.3% presented in the early stage of the disease. Death occurred in 505 (14.7%) of the patients. Theoverall 2-, 5-, 7-, 10- and 15-year survival rates were 93%, 82%, 78%, 74%, and 66%, respectively. Various coronaviruses, which cause a wide range of human and animal diseases, have emerged in the past 50 years. This may be due to their abilities to recombine, mutate, and infect multiple species and cell types. A novel coronavirus, which is a family of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), has been termed COVID-19 by the World Health Organization (WHO). COVID-19 is the strain that has not been previously identified in humans. The early identification and diagnosis of the virus is crucial for effective pandemic prevention. Magnesium and melatonin are known to exert multiple beneficial effects including anti-inflammatory and antioxidant actions. This study was designed to determine the effects of magnesium and/or melatonin supplementation on metabolic profiles in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). This randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was conducted among 84 subjects with PCOS aged 18-40 years old. Patients were randomly assigned based on the random block procedure to take magnesium, melatonin, magnesium plus melatonin, or placebo for 8 weeks. Fasting blood samples were taken at baseline and after the intervention to quantify related variables. After the 8-week intervention, an insignificant marginal difference was seen in waist circumference (WC) between groups (P = 0.085). Magnesium-melatonin co-supplementation resulted in more reductions in hirsutism compared with other groups (P < 0.001). Serum levels of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) declined significantly in the melatonin and co-supplementation groups compared to baseline (P < 0.05). Also, magnesium plus melatonin was associated with a more increase in total antioxidant capacity (TAC) levels, as compared to the other treatment groups (P = 0.001). Overall, we found a favorable effect of co-supplementation of magnesium and melatonin for 8 weeks in women with PCOS on hirsutism, serum TNF-α, and TAC levels. Background: An important cause of Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) is Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). The aim of this study was the evaluation of copy number variations (CNVs) of hsa-miR-93, hsa-miR-122, hsa-miR-192 in CAD patients with or without T2DM., Methods: CNVs of three micro-RNAs in 50 CAD patients and 50 non-CAD subjects both with and without diabetes were evaluated by real-time PCR and compared in three comparison groups namely 1, 2 and 3 (including comparison between CAD and non-CAD, diabetic CAD and non-diabetic CAD and between diabetic CAD and diabetic non-CAD subjects, respectively)., Results: There were significant differences in CNVs of hsa-miR-93 between cases and controls in comparison groups 1 and 3 ( p  = .0310 and .0232, respectively), for hsa-miR-122 in all comparison groups, and for hsa-miR-192 in comparison group 3 ( p  = .0181)., Conclusion: We showed the association of these microRNA-CNVs with CAD, T2DM or both simultaneously.

Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common endocrine disorders among women of reproductive age. This study was designed to investigate the effects of melatonin and/or magnesium supplementation on metabolic profile and levels of sex hormones in PCOS women., Methods: In an 8-week randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial, 84 subjects with PCOS aged 18-40 years were randomly assigned based on the random block procedure to take magnesium, melatonin, magnesium plus melatonin, and placebo. Fasting blood samples were obtained at the beginning and end of the study., Results: After intervention, the mean Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index score decreased significantly in both co-supplementation and melatonin groups (P < 0.001). Magnesium supplementation in combination with melatonin resulted in a significant greater decrease in testosterone concentrations compared with the placebo (P < 0.05). Co-supplementation of magnesium-melatonin had significantly reduced serum insulin levels (geometric means difference: - 1.11 (mIU/mL) (percent change: - 15.99)), homeostasis model of assessment-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) (- 0.28 (- 18.66)), serum cholesterol (mean difference: - 16.08 (mg/dl) [95% CI - 24.24, - 7.92]), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) - 18.96 (mg/dl) [- 28.73, - 9.20]) and testosterone levels (- 0.09 (ng/ml) (- 25.00)), as compared to the baseline values (P < 0.05). An increase in serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels was also observed following the administration of the melatonin alone (2.76 (mg/dl) [0.57, 4.95]) or in combination with magnesium (2.19 (mg/dl) [0.61, 3.77]) (P < 0.05)., Conclusions: Co-supplementation with magnesium and melatonin had beneficial effects on sleep quality and total testosterone. Additionally, melatonin supplementation alone was found to be associated with a significant reduction in PSQI score. Industrial waste management generated by different petrochemical complexes at Pars Special Economic Energy Zone, located in the south of Iran, was investigated. All 10 active petrochemical complexes were visited and generated wastes were identified by a checklist. Petrochemical plants were classified regarding feeds, process, and products and nine representative wastes were sampled. Physicochemical characteristics were analyzed and appropriate management approaches were proposed according to the literature review and the results of waste characterization. The generated wastes were classified as hazardous and non-hazardous according to the Basel Convention and Environmental Protection Agency lists of waste classification. Also, the concentrations of organic compounds and heavy metals were measured to classify wastes characteristically. Comparing concentrations of the most important heavy metals in sampled wastes illustrated that sandblast with Cu concentration of 4295 mg kg -1 , spent activated carbon with Hg concentration of 127 mg kg -1 , and spent catalyst with 25% Ni content can be categorized as hazardous wastes, due to the exceeding Total Threshold Limit Concentration levels. Based on laboratory results, all industrial waste generated in the petrochemical complexes were categorized into three groups, namely Organic Waste with High Calorific Value, Non-organic Recyclable Waste, and Non-organic Non-recyclable Waste. Finally, management approaches, including material recycling, energy recovery (through incineration), and landfilling, were proposed and a conceptual model was suggested in order to show different routes and final destination for each kind of waste generated in all similar petrochemical complexes.

Heat poses an urgent threat to public health in cities, as the urban heat island (UHI) effect can amplify exposures, contributing to high heat-related mortality and morbidity. Urban trees have the potential to mitigate heat by providing substantial cooling, as well as co-benefits such as reductions in energy consumption. The City of Boston has attempted to expand its urban canopy, yet maintenance costs and high tree mortality have hindered successful canopy expansion. Here, we present an interactive web application called Right Place, Right Tree-Boston that aims to support informed decision-making for planting new trees. To highlight priority regions for canopy expansion, we developed a Boston-specific Heat Vulnerability Index (HVI) and present this alongside maps of summer daytime land surface temperatures. We also provide information about tree pests and diseases, suitability of species for various conditions, land ownership, maintenance tips, and alternatives to tree planting. This web application is designed to support decision-making at multiple spatial scales, to assist city officials as well as residents who are interested in expanding or maintaining Boston's urban forest., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

Objective: To determine the extent to which gender disparities exist in either obtaining a leadership position or pay equity among those with leadership positions in state governmental public health agencies., Design: Utilizing the 2014 Public Health Workforce Interests and Needs Survey, a nationally representative cross-sectional study of state governmental public health agency employees, the characteristics of the state governmental public health agency leadership were described. We estimated the odds of being a manager or an executive leader and the odds of leaders earning greater than $95 000 annually for women compared with men using polytomous multinomial regression and logistic regression models, respectively., Setting and Participants: The Public Health Workforce Interests and Needs Survey was conducted via electronic survey at 37 state health departments. This study utilized only those respondents who listed their current position as a supervisory position (n = 3237)., Main Outcome Measures: Leadership position and high-earning leadership were the 2 main outcome measures explored. Leadership position was defined as a 3-level ordinal variable: supervisor, manager, or executive leader. High-earning leadership was defined as a member of leadership earning $95 000 or greater., Results: Women accounted for 72.0% of the overall state governmental public health agency workforce and 67.1% of leadership positions. Women experienced lower odds (odds ratio = 0.55, 95% confidence interval: 0.39-0.78) of holding executive leadership positions than men and lower odds (odds ratio = 0.64, 95% confidence interval: 0.50-0.81) of earning an annual salary greater than $95 000., Conclusion: While women were represented in similar proportions in the general workforce as in leadership positions, gender disparities still existed within leadership positions. Increased effort is needed to ensure that opportunities exist for women in executive leadership positions and in pay equity. With public health's commitment to social justice and the benefits of diversity to an agency's policies and programs, it is important to ensure that women's voices are equally represented at all levels of leadership.

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a multifactorial chronic inflammatory disease, which is the most common form of heart disease. This is one of the main causes of death in the United States. Inflammation is one of the key drivers of atherosclerotic plaque development. Forkhead box protein O1 (FOXO1s) family and 5-lipoxygenase make an important contribution to atherosclerosis. The aim of this study was to investigate the methylation pattern and polymorphism analysis of FOXO1 and arachidonate 5-lipoxygenase (ALOX5) promoter genes. We studied 50 patients with CAD and 50 age- and sex-matched healthy controls by high resolution melt technique. Overall, we found significant differences between patients and controls in terms of the promoter methylation of ALOX5 (P > 0.05). But there was no significant difference in FOXO1 promoter methylation between patient and controls. Single nucleotide polymorphisms genotyping of rs12762303 and rs2297627, in ALOX5 and FOXO1 genes were demonstrated a significant correlation between mutant allele and the risk of CAD, respectively. Furthermore, there were significant associations between CT + CC genotype and ALOX5 expression. Our findings demonstrated functional effects of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and DNA methylation in ALOX5 on mentioned genes expression and they resulted in CAD progression., (© 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is one of the most common pathogens in hospitals. Along with the advent of various drug resistance patterns, rising resistance to colistin, the last alternative against this bacterium, is reported as a major clinical concern all over the world. Initially, Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains were identified by diagnostic tests including phenotypic method, growth at 42°C, Gram staining, culture on Blood Agar, EMB Agar, and biochemical oxidase, and catalase tests. The strains were confirmed using Microgen kit. Then, the resistance pattern of the identified strains was evaluated by Antibiogram. The presence of PmrA and PmrB genes were investigated by PCR method.A total of 60 strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa were isolated and identified using microscopic, macroscopic and microbiological methods. The lowest resistance was observed against chloramphenicol and colistin antibiotics. Most of the strains harbored the PmrA and PmrB genes. The results of this study indicated an increasing trend in the resistance of the bacterium against different antibiotics. Accordingly, it is necessary to establish an infection control and therapeutic strategy in preventing the spread of such as similar resistant organisms.

Purpose: To compare histologic abnormalities of tear film and tear osmolarity between normal eyes and eyes with pterygium., Methods: This was a prospective, hospital-based, case-control study involving 95 patients (65 men, 30 women) with unilateral pterygium. The tear meniscus height (TMH), Schirmer's test-1 (SCH-1) score, Rose Bengal staining (RBS) score, tear film breakup time (TBUT), tear osmolarity (TO), and conjunctival impression cytology (CIC) were assessed in both eyes. The Chi-square and Student's t -tests were used to compare the results between the two groups. P values <0.05 were considered statistically significant., Results: The mean patient age was 50.9 years, with the largest age group being the 45-55 year-old bracket across both genders. Most patients (82.1%) had nasal pterygium, and 80% were involved in outside activities. The mean assessment values in the case and control groups were as follows: TMH, 0.21 vs. 0.24 mm; SCH-1, 13.2 vs. 17.8 mm; RBS, 4.38 vs. 2.51 points; TBUT, 8.7 vs. 13.2 seconds; TO, 306 vs. 299 mOsm/L ( P < 0.001 in all cases). The proportions of abnormal assessment values in the case and control groups were as follows: TMH, 82.1% vs. 3.16%; SCH-1, 20% vs. 2.1%; RBS, 30.53% vs. 4.22%; TBUT, 61.05% vs. 6.3%; TO, 10.52% vs. 1.05%; CIC, 33.7% vs. 7.37% ( P < 0.05 for all comparisons)., Conclusion: This study showed that the quantity and quality of tear film, as well as the number of goblet cells, decreased, but the tear osmolarity increased in eyes with pterygium. Background: Osteoporosis is a multifactorial disease with a strong genetic influence. Recent studies have demonstrated that cytokines, such as TGF-β1 and interleukin 6 (IL-6) play complex roles in the normal bone metabolism and pathophysiology of osteoporosis. Here, we investigated the roles of 2 polymorphisms mapping to the promoters of TGF-β1and IL-6 genes on the genetic susceptibility to osteoporosis as well as calcium and vitamin D levels., Methods: A cohort of 297 elderly participants in northern Iran comprising 181 osteoporotic patients (mean age ± SD, 68.36 ± 7.21 years) and 116 unrelated healthy controls (mean age ± SD, 64 ± 5.44 years) was studied for TGF-β1(C-509T) and IL-6 (G-634C) polymorphisms using PCR-RFLP method., Results: A significant relationship was observed between calcium level and IL-6 genotypes in osteoporotic males (P = 0.011) and females (P = 0.020). No significant differences were observed between osteoporotic and control groups with respect to allele frequency or genotype distribution based on the 2 selected polymorphisms under different genetic models. The results remained the same after comparing the BMD values of either the femur neck or lumbar spine with the genotypes of the elderly men and women when analyzed separately., Conclusion: IL-6 genotype influences serum calcium levels in osteoporotic patients. Coronary artery disease (CAD) including myocardial infarction (MI) as its complication, is one of the most common heart diseases worldwide and also in Iran, with extremely elevated mortality. CAD is a multifactorial disorder. Twin and family studies at different loci have demonstrated that genetic factors have an important role in the progression of CAD. Many studies have reported a significant association of CDKN2B-AS , also known as ANRIL which is located within the p15, p16, p14 gene cluster at 9p21 locus, with cardiovascular diseases as well as many other diseases like diabetes and cancers. This study investigated two polymorphisms rs10757274 and rs1333042 of CDKN2B-AS gene at 9p21 locus. 205 subjects, comprising 102 controls and 103 CAD patients were genotyped by TaqMan probe real time PCR technique and haplotypes were examined. This study confirmed the association of rs10757274 variants with CAD in Iranian patients (P= 0.003) but genotype and allele distributions of CAD and control groups showed no significant association for the rs1333042. However, frequency of the [G;G] haplotype of these two SNPs was significantly higher in CAD group (P= 0.0002, Odds Ratio = 3.1, 95% CI = 1.7-5.7). Our finding suggests that [G; G] haplotype of rs10757274 and rs1333042 may be considered as a genetic risk factor for susceptibility to CAD in Iranian patients.

Background: Women with elevated natural killer (NK) cell frequency and function during pregnancy, suffer from recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL). In the present study, the possible effect of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) administration on Th1 and Th2 cell frequency, cytokine secretion, and expression of transcription factors is compared between RPL patients and control group., Materials and Methods: Totally, 44 women with a history of RPL (32 women as treated group and 12 as control group) were enrolled in the study. The frequency of Th1 and Th2 lymphocytes, the expression of transcription factors related to these cells and the serum levels of associated cytokines were assessed by flowcytometry, real-time PCR and ELISA, respectively. All, assessments were performed both before and after treatment with IVIG., Results: A significant reduction in Th1 lymphocyte frequency, transcription factor expression and cytokine levels were observed in IVIG-treated group, while all the above parameters indicated a significant increase for Th2 lymphocytes. Th1/Th2 ratio decreased significantly (p value<0.0001) at the end of treatment and 28 out of 32 (87.5%) women in IVIG-treated group had live birth in comparison with 5 out of 12 (41.6%) in untreated group., Conclusion: IVIG administration proves to be an efficient therapeutic strategy which is able to enhance the success rate of pregnancy through a shift in Th2 responses. The Multi-Rule Quality Control System (MRQCS) is a tool currently employed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to evaluate and compare laboratory performance. We have applied the MRQCS to a comparison of instructor and computer-led pre-laboratory lectures for a supplemental learning experiment. Students in general chemistry and analytical chemistry from both two- and four-year institutions performed two laboratory experiments as part of their normal laboratory curriculum. The first laboratory experiment was a foundational learning experiment in which all the students were introduced to Beer-Lambert's Law and spectrophotometric light absorbance measurements. The foundational learning experiment was instructor-led only, and participant performance was evaluated against a mean characterized value. The second laboratory experiment was a supplemental learning experiment in which students were asked to build upon the methodology they learned in the foundational learning experiment and apply it to a different analyte. The instruction type was varied randomly into two delivery modes, participants receiving either instructor-led or computer-led pre-laboratory instruction. The MRQCS was applied and determined that no statistical difference was found to exist in the QC (quality control) passing rates between the participants in the instructor-led instruction and the participants in the computer-led instruction. Identification of populations susceptible to heat effects is critical for targeted prevention and more accurate risk assessment. Fluid and electrolyte imbalance (FEI) may provide an objective indicator of heat morbidity. Data on daily ambient temperature and FEI emergency department (ED) visits were collected in Atlanta, Georgia, USA during 1993-2012. Associations of warm-season same-day temperatures and FEI ED visits were estimated using Poisson generalized linear models. Analyses explored associations between FEI ED visits and various temperature metrics (maximum, minimum, average, and diurnal change in ambient temperature, apparent temperature, and heat index) modeled using linear, quadratic, and cubic terms to allow for non-linear associations. Effect modification by potential determinants of heat susceptibility (sex; race; comorbid congestive heart failure, kidney disease, and diabetes; and neighborhood poverty and education levels) was assessed via stratification. Higher warm-season ambient temperature was significantly associated with FEI ED visits, regardless of temperature metric used. Stratified analyses suggested heat-related risks for all populations, but particularly for males. This work highlights the utility of FEI as an indicator of heat morbidity, the health threat posed by warm-season temperatures, and the importance of considering susceptible populations in heat-health research., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest. Osteoporosis is the most common multifactorial metabolic bone disorder worldwide with a strong genetic component. In this review, the evidence for a genetic contribution to osteoporosis and related phenotypes is summarized alongside with methods used to identify osteoporosis susceptibility genes. The key biological pathways involved in the skeleton and bone development are discussed with a particular focus on master genes clustered in these pathways and their mode of action. Furthermore, the most studied single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) analyzed for their importance as genetic markers of the disease are presented. New data generated by next-generation sequencing in conjunction with extensive meta-analyses should contribute to a better understanding of the genetic basis of osteoporosis and related phenotype variability. The health and wellbeing of building occupants should be a key priority in the design, building, and operation of new and existing buildings. Buildings can be designed, renovated, and constructed to promote healthy environments and behaviors and mitigate adverse health outcomes. This paper highlights health in terms of the relationship between occupants and buildings, as well as the relationship of buildings to the community. In the context of larger systems, smart buildings and green infrastructure strategies serve to support public health goals. At the level of the individual building, interventions that promote health can also enhance indoor environmental quality and provide opportunities for physical activity. Navigating the various programs that use metrics to measure a building's health impacts reveals that there are multiple co-benefits of a "healthy building," including those related to the economy, environment, society, transportation, planning, and energy efficiency.

A new platinum(II) complex; [Pt(Met)(DMSO)Cl]Cl in which Met = metformin and DMSO: dimethylsulfoxide, was synthesized and characterized by (1)H NMR, IR, UV-Vis spectra, molar conductivity and computational methods. Binding interaction of this complex with calf thymus (CT) DNA has been investigated by using absorption, emission, circular dichroism, viscosity measurements, differential pulse voltammetry and cleavage studies by agarose gel electrophoresis. UV-Vis absorption studies showed hyperchromism. CD studies showed less perturbation on the base stacking and helicity bands in the CD spectrum of CT-DNA (B→C structural transition). In fluorimeteric studies, the Pt(II) complex can bind with DNA-NR complex and forms a new non-fluorescence adduct. The anodic peak current in the differential pulse voltammogram of the Pt(II) complex decreased gradually with the addition of DNA. Cleavage experiments showed that the Pt(II) complex does not induce any cleavage under the experimental setup. Interaction between antidiabetic drug, Metformin and calf thymus DNA (CT-DNA) in (50mM Tris-HCl) buffer were studied by UV-Visible absorption, fluorescence, CD spectroscopy and viscosity measurements. In fluorimetric studies, the enthalpy and entropy of the reaction between the drug and CT-DNA showed that the reaction is exothermic (ΔH=-35.4522 kJ mol(-1); ΔS=-49.9523 J mol(-1)K(-1)). The competitive binding studies showed that the drug could release Hoechst 33258 completely. The complex showed absorption hyperchromism in its UV-Vis spectrum with DNA. The calculated binding constant, K(b), obtained from UV-Vis absorption studies was 8.3×10(4)M(-1). Moreover, the changes in the CD spectra in the presence of the drug show stabilization of the right-handed B form of CT-DNA. Finally, viscosity measurements revealed that the binding of the complex with CT-DNA could be surface binding, mainly due to groove binding., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.)
