10. American Grape Training - An Account of the Leading Forms Now in Use of Training the American Grapes

Abstract

This book contains an account of all the contemporary forms in use pertaining to the growing of grapes written as a guide for students of the craft. The subject of grape growing is a tricky one, and notoriously hard to teach to students in a traditional, lecture-based manner. Because of this, Bailey searched for literature with a more hands-on approach to growing, comprehensively detailing the methodology - but to no avail. As such, Bailey resolved to assimilate his notes on the subject and create his own material for his students and others, the product of which is this detailed guide. Although grape growing was a new and experimental endeavour, the principles contained herein are timelessly valuable and still constitute information fundamental to successful grape-growing - a must have for enthusiasts of the craft and those interested in its history. Liberty Hyde Bailey was a master of horticulture, botany, and cofounded the American Society for Horticultural Science. This book was originally published in 1893 and is republished now with an introductory biography of the author.

He was a keen advocate of preserving American rural civilisation and as a leader in the Country Life Movement he promoted the principles of agrarianism in the tradition of Thomas Jefferson. We are republishing this work with a brand new introductory biography of the author with an aim to place the book in context with the achievements of his life. The following passage is an extract from the opening chapter of this work:'The country-life movement is the working out of the desire to make rural civilization as effective and satisfying as other civilization. It is not an organized movement proceeding from one center or even expressing one set of ideas. It is a world-motive to even up society as between country and city; for it is generally understood that country life has not reached as high development within its sphere as city life has reached within its sphere. We call it a new subject. As a'movement,'or a recognized set of problems needing attention, it may possibly be called new; but in reality it is new only to those who have recently discovered it.'

Abstract

Isozyme phenotypes of Malus fusca, a native of western North America, differ strik- ingly from those of eastern North American sect. Chloromeles. Isozyme phenotypes vary little between the three taxa recognized within sect. Chloromeles: M. angustifolia, M. coronaria, and M. ioensis. Phe- notypes of seedlings from native taxa did not share diagnostic allozymes with the cultivated apple, M. x domestica, indicating little gene flow from the latter into native Malus. Isozyme patterns do, however, support earlier conclusions based on morphology that M. platycarpa and the flowering cultivar 'Kola' are hybrids of sect. Chloromeles and the domesticated apple, and that M. dawsoniana is a hybrid of the domesticated apple and M. fusca.

Abstract

Large size, hardness, combinations of thick-walled fibers and sclereids with thin-walled parenchyma cells, and the occurrence of silica, calcium oxalate, and tannins make anatomical preparations of palm leaves difficult. Samples for anatomical study should encompass one-half a pinna or a comparable portion from palmate and entire leaves including the midrib, all large ribs, and the margin. Similar pieces from herbarium specimens are reconstituted in glycerin alcohol, aerosol OT and distilled water (10:3:90). All samples are fixed in formol-acetic-alcohol (FAA) but stored in glycerin alcohol to minimize hardening. Transverse and longitudinal sections 15 microns thick, epidermal macerations, and pieces for clearing and for scanning electron microscopy are prepared from the FAA fixed material. Samples for electroscanning are gradually changed to 100% acetone, critical point dried with CO2, and coated with 100-300 angstroms of gold. Leaf material for microtomy is treated with hydrofluoric acid, embedded in Paraplast, and sectioned at 15 microns at a temperature of 7.2 C. Paraplast sections are floated directly on a modification of Sass' Adhesive III, mounted unstained or stained in safranin and fast gaee, and observed in polarized light. Epidermal peels are prepared by soaking pieces 5 mm square for 12-24 hours in undiluted bleach. Pieces for observation of transverse veins are cleared by treatment in 5% sodium hydroxide in a 60 C oven, washed rapidly in three changes of distilled water, and placed in one-third strength commercial bleach until clear. The same procedures can be used to prepare reproductive material for anatomical observations, but time schedules must be increased for larger specimens.
