Abstract

A influência dos ácidos cítrico, acético e oxálico na extração da sílica a partir da casca do arroz foi estudada. As condições experimentais da extração, como pressão e concentração ácida, também foram estudadas. De acordo com o tamanho dos poros pela adsorção de N2, conforme método BET, foram classificadas como mesoporosa. Comparações entre diferentes tipos de ácidos utilizados foram realizadas pela área de superfície específica da sílica obtida.O ácido que apresentou melhor desempenho foi o acético, resultando em área de superfície específica 271 m²/g; o ácido cítrico apresentou o melhor resultado de pureza, 99,96%.

Abstract

Background The aim of our study was to assess subclinical cardiac effects of anthracyclines (ANTs) in women treated for breast cancer (BC). Methods We enrolled 46 female patients with BC undergoing adjuvant treatment with anthracycline–containing chemotherapy (CT) followed by taxane (paclitaxel/docetaxel). Patients underwent physical examination, electrocardiogram (ECG) and standard transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) including evaluation of diastolic and systolic function, measured as left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), left ventricular global longitudinal strain (GLS) and myocardial work (MW) expressed as global work index (GWI), global constructive work (GCW), global work waste (GWW), and global work efficiency (GWE). The parameters were measured at baseline (T0) and at 3 months (T1) and 6 months (T2) follow up. Results All patients completed the chemotherapy cycles. No significant cardiovascular adverse events were observed during treatment. Neither 2D left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) nor E/e’ ratio evaluation at TDI were significantly changed after treatment. Conversely, GLS was significantly reduced at T1 and T2 since baseline (GLS – 19,99 % IQR –20,6 –19,3 % at T0 vs –17,88 % IQR –18,8 –16,9 % at T1, p Conclusion Our study demonstrates that evaluation of myocardial work allows very early detection of subclinical cardiac damage induced by chemotherapy, consensually to the reduction of the GLS. A multiparametric assessment of the myocardial function, including myocardial work and GLS, could improve the accuracy of risk stratification of cardiotoxicity in patients undergoing ANTs treatment.

Abstract

Adesão é um parâmetro físico-químico que pode promover inovações em materiais à base de cimento Portland. Este conceito, entretanto, ainda requer evidência experimental para propiciar mais desenvolvimentos neste assunto. Este trabalho tem demonstrado como diferentes substâncias podem promover diferentes forças de adesão após a avaliação do grau de hidratação e a resistência mecânica de materiais cementícios não reativos. As substâncias capazes de produzir ligações de hidrogênio tridimensionais como, por exemplo, a água, foram as mais eficazes para produzir amostras cementícias com melhor resistência mecânica. Isso significa que a água não é importante somente por causa de seu papel na hidratação do cimento, mas também porque ela desenvolve adesão entre as superfícies cementícias hidratadas. Mais que especular sobre o entendimento fundamental na adesão de materiais cementícios à base de cimento Portland, este artigo tem a intenção de estimular a discussão como aproveitar a água confinada entre as superfícies cementícias hidratadas como um nanoadesivo interno, até agora pouco explorado, mas ao mesmo tempo com tendência de fornecer materiais de alto desempenho.Adhesion is a physical-chemical parameter able to render innovations to Portland cement-based materials. However, this concept still lacks experimental evidence to underlie further developments in this subject. This work has demonstrated how distinct substances can impart different adhesion forces after evaluating the hydration degree and the mechanical strength of non-reactive cementitious materials. The substances capable of making tridimensional hydrogen bonds, such as water, for instance, were the most effective in providing cementitious samples with improved bending strength. It implies that water is not only important because of its role in cement hydration, but also because it develops adhesion between hydrated cementitious surfaces. More than speculating the fundamental understanding on adhesion in Portland cement-based materials, the present paper intends to stimulate thinking on how to take the benefits of the water confined between the hydrated cementitious surfaces as an in-built nanoadhesive, so far little explored, but at the same time so prone to yield high performance materials.

Abstract

A Engenharia de Materiais propiciou os avanços mais notáveis em termos do desempenho mecânico dos materiais cimentícios nas últimas décadas, por meio das técnicas de conformação e do projeto da microestrutura. Com isso foi demonstrada ser equivocada a idéia de que baixas resistências mecânicas seriam inerentes aos materiais cimentícios. No entanto, pouco ainda se sabe a respeito de um parâmetro físico-químico que poderá nos conduzir a novos avanços: a adesão entre as fases hidratadas. Logo, o objetivo do presente trabalho é investigar a adesão com o intuito de ampliar o entendimento sobre seu papel na resistência mecânica dos materiais cimentícios. Os resultados indicaram que a resistência mecânica desses materiais é governada por moléculas de água confinadas em películas nanométricas entre as superfícies das fases cimentícias hidratadas. Em outras palavras, essa pode ser uma contribuição para tornar viável a nanotecnologia desses materiais por meio de um tema até então pouco explorado: a adesão por água confinada.The Materials Engineering afforded the greatest known advances on the mechanical performance of cementitious materials in the latest decades, by casting techniques and microstructural design. Therewith, it was demonstrated to be inadequate the idea that low mechanical strengths should be inherent to cement-based materials. Nevertheless, another promising parameter still remains in the early stages of understanding: the adhesion. Thus, this paper aims to investigate adhesion in order to get an in-depth understanding about its role on the mechanical strength of cementitious materials. According to the experimental evidences, the mechanical strength of such materials is ruled by water molecules which are confined in nanolayers by the hydrated surfaces. These results provided helpful insights on in-built nanotechnology able to render high performance materials through a so far little explored subject: the adhesion by confined water.

Abstract

The PAMELA experiment was launched on board the Resurs-DK1 satellite on June 15th 2006. The apparatus was designed to conduct precision studies of charged cosmic radiation over a wide energy range, from tens of MeV up to several hundred GeV, with unprecedented statistics. In five years of continuous data taking in space, PAMELA accurately measured the energy spectra of cosmic ray antiprotons and positrons, as well as protons, electrons and light nuclei, sometimes providing data in unexplored energetic regions. These important results have shed new light in several astrophysical fields like: an indirect search for Dark Matter, a search for cosmological antimatter (anti-Helium), and the validation of acceleration, transport and secondary production models of cosmic rays in the Galaxy. Some of the most important items of Solar and Magnetospheric physics were also investigated. Here we present the most recent results obtained by the PAMELA experiment.

In this work the influence of citric, acetic and oxalic acids on the extraction of nanometric silica from rice hull was studied. The experimental conditions of extraction, such as pressure and acid concentration, were also studied. According to the pore size evaluated by N2 adsorption (BET method), the specimens were classified as mesoporous. Comparisons between different types of acids used were performed by evaluation of the specific surface area of the silica obtained. Acetic acid showed the best performance, resulting in silica with a specific surface area of 271 m²/g. Citric acid showed the best result in terms of purity, 99.96%.

Abstract

The adhesion of a fine probe to a smooth oxide surface covered with a few layers of liquid molecules is considered by molecular modelling and also by experiment. A modified DL_POLY 2.19 computer code was applied to a magnesium oxide pyramidal probe approaching a plane MgO surface, calculating the equilibrium attractive force as a function of the gap between the surfaces. For clean MgO, there was a jump to contact and strong adhesion force. Detachment of the MgO probe could not be achieved and plastic flow of the probe was observed during pull-off. Contamination of the crystal surfaces by other molecules showed two major changes in the mechanism of adhesion. Firstly, the adhesion was much reduced as indicated by the obscuration of the jump to contact and the ease of detachment of the contaminated probe. Secondly, the contaminant molecules formed ordered layers on the MgO surfaces and each layer had to be squeezed out in a stepwise motion. The final layer could not be removed by normal pressure. Abstract

The energy spectra of galactic cosmic rays carry fundamental information regarding their origin and propagation. These spectra, when measured near Earth, are significantly affected by the solar magnetic field. A comprehensive description of the cosmic radiation must therefore include the transport and modulation of cosmic rays inside the heliosphere. During the end of the last decade, the Sun underwent a peculiarly long quiet phase well suited to study modulation processes. In this paper we present proton spectra measured from 2006 July to 2009 December by PAMELA. The large collected statistics of protons allowed the time variation to be followed on a nearly monthly basis down to 400 MV. Data are compared with a state-of-the-art three-dimensional model of solar modulation. © 2013. The American Astronomical Society. All rights reserved..

Abstract

We present the space spectrometer PAMELA observations of proton and helium fluxes during the December 13 and 14, 2006 solar particle events. This is the first direct measurement of the solar energetic particles in space with a single instrument in the energy range from $\sim$ 80 MeV/n up to $\sim$ 3 GeV/n. In the event of December 13 measured energy spectra of solar protons and helium were compared with results obtained by neutron monitors and other detectors. Our measurements show a spectral behaviour different from those derived from the neutron monitor network. No satisfactory analytical fitting was found for the energy spectra. During the first hours of the December 13 event solar energetic particles spectra were close to the exponential form demonstrating rather significant temporal evolution. Solar He with energy up to ~1 GeV/n was recorded on December 13. In the event of December 14 energy of solar protons reached ~600 MeV whereas maximum energy of He was below 100 MeV/n. The spectra were slightly bended in the lower energy range and preserved their form during the second event. Difference in the particle flux appearance and temporal evolution in these two events may argue for a special conditions leading to acceleration of solar particles up to relativistic energies.

Abstract

The adhesion between surfaces can be enhanced significantly by the presence of hydrogen bonding. Confined water at the nanoscale can display behaviour remarkably different to bulk water due to the formation of hydrogen bonds between two surfaces. In this work we investigate the role of confined water on the interaction between hydrophilic surfaces, specifically the effect of organic contaminants in the aqueous phase, by measuring the peak adhesive force and the work of adhesion. Atomic force microscope cantilevers presenting hemispherical silica tips were interacted with planar single crystals of silica in the presence of dimethylformamide, ethanol, and formamide; solution compositions in the range 0-100 mol% water were investigated for each molecule. Each molecule was chosen for its ability to hydrogen bond with water molecules, with increasing concentrations likely to disrupt the structure of surface-bound water layers. With the exception of aqueous solutions containing low concentrations of ethanol, all molecules decreased the ability of confined water to enhance the adhesion between the silica surfaces in excess of the predicted theoretical adhesion due to van der Waals forces. The conclusion was that adhesion depends strongly on the formation of a hydrogen-bonding network within the water layers confined between the silica surfaces.

Abstract

When two surfaces confine water layers between them at the nanoscale, the behavior of these confined water molecules can deviate significantly from the behavior of bulk water, and it could reflect on the adhesion of such surfaces. Thus, the aim of this study is to assess the role of confined water layers on the adhesion of hydrophilic surfaces and how sensitive this adhesion is to the presence of contaminants. Our methodology used under water AFM force measurements with an alumina-sputtered sphere-tipped cantilever and a flat alumina single crystal and then added fractions of ethanol, dimethylformamide, formamide, trimethylamine, and trehalose to water as contaminants. Such solutions were designed to illuminate the influences of dielectric constant, molecular size, refractive index, and number of hydrogen bonds from donors and acceptors of solutes to water. Apart from very dilute solutions of dimethylformamide, all solutions decreased the ability of confined water to give adhesion of the alumina surfaces. The predicted theoretical contribution of van der Waals and electrostatic forces was not observed when the contaminants distorted the way water organizes itself in confinement. The conclusion was that adhesion was sensitive mostly to the hydrogen-bonding network within water layers confined by the hydrophilic alumina surfaces.

Abstract

This study documents neuronal differentiation in vitro from undifferentiated precursor cells of caudalmost regenerating spinal cord of the teleost Apteronotus albifrons. At 11 days in vitro, cells from the caudalmost tip of the regenerating cord are flat and polygonal in shape, lack neuronal processes and do not stain with antibody against neuron-specific filaments. At 15 days in vitro, some of the caudalmost cells have developed short, neurite-like processes; at 18 days in vitro, some cells react positively with antibody against neuron-specific filaments. At 26 days in vitro, many of the caudalmost cells have long branching neurites and react positively with anti-neurofilament antibody. Addition of insulin-like growth factor-I to the medium accelerates the process of neuronal differentiation from the caudalmost precursor cells in vitro. The source of these precursor cells is ultimately cells of the ependymal layer of adult spinal cord. Further investigation of the factors that control production and differentiation of these cells will be important in defining the developmental potential possible for vertebrate spinal cord cells and may aid in creating an optimal environment for regeneration of axons within mammalian spinal cord.

Este conceito, entretanto, ainda requer evidência experimental para propiciar mais desenvolvimentos neste assunto. Este trabalho tem demonstrado como diferentes substâncias podem promover diferentes forças de adesão após a avaliação do grau de hidratação e a resistência mecânica de materiais cementícios não reativos. As substâncias capazes de produzir ligações de hidrogênio tridimensionais como, por exemplo, a água, foram as mais eficazes para produzir amostras cementícias com melhor resistência mecânica. Isso significa que a água não é importante somente por causa de seu papel na hidratação do cimento, mas também porque ela desenvolve adesão entre as superfícies cementícias hidratadas. Mais que especular sobre o entendimento fundamental na adesão de materiais cementícios à base de cimento Portland, este artigo tem a intenção de estimular a discussão como aproveitar a água confinada entre as superfícies cementícias hidratadas como um nanoadesivo interno, até agora pouco explorado, mas ao mesmo tempo com tendência de fornecer materiais de alto desempenho. Adhesion is a physical-chemical parameter able to render innovations to Portland cement-based materials. However, this concept still lacks experimental evidence to underlie further developments in this subject. This work has demonstrated how distinct substances can impart different adhesion forces after evaluating the hydration degree and the mechanical strength of non-reactive cementitious materials. The substances capable of making tridimensional hydrogen bonds, such as water, for instance, were the most effective in providing cementitious samples with improved bending strength. It implies that water is not only important because of its role in cement hydration, but also because it develops adhesion between hydrated cementitious surfaces. More than speculating the fundamental understanding on adhesion in Portland cement-based materials, the present paper intends to stimulate thinking on how to take the benefits of the water confined between the hydrated cementitious surfaces as an in-built nanoadhesive, so far little explored, but at the same time so prone to yield high performance materials.

Abstract

BackgroundCatheter-related bloodstream infections remain costly with no simple prevention. We report preliminary results of a phase I trial of ethanol-lock administration to prevent mediport catheter-related bloodstream infections in children.MethodsTwelve patients receiving intravenous antibody treatments for neuroblastoma were enrolled. On 4 days of each 5-day antibody cycle, 70% ethanol was administered instead of heparin to dwell in each patient's mediport overnight. We used clinical monitoring/questionnaires to assess symptoms and measured blood ethanol levels and liver functions. Patients were tracked for positive blood cultures. Time to infection for ethanol-lock–treated patients was compared with historical controls.ResultsWe administered 123 ethanol-locks. No adverse symptoms attributable to ethanol occurred; one patient's urticaria worsened. Blood ethanol levels averaged 11 mg/dL. The study was voluntarily suspended after 3 patients' catheters became occluded, 1 of which fractured. A positive blood culture occurred in 1 (8%) of 12 patients, but suspension of the study precluded statistical power to detect impact on time to infection.ConclusionsAlthough children with mediport catheters exhibited nontoxic blood ethanol levels and a low rate of bloodstream infections following prophylactic ethanol-lock use, there was a high incidence of catheter occlusion. Adjustments are necessary before adopting ethanol-locks for routine prophylaxis against catheter infections in children.

Abstract

A local and regional determination of the extent of disease, or staging, is performed at diagnosis and relapse (Leonard 2002). A system of staging exists for many pediatric tumors and helps one to determine both prognosis and treatment. It is based on the premise that cancer of similar histologic features and sites of origin grows and metastasizes in a similar manner. All treatment protocols are based on the stage of the tumor, which determines such factors as use of radiotherapy and intensity of chemotherapy. Correct staging allows the medical team to minimize therapy and yet maximize cure. This further provides the opportunity to limit therapy to minimize the long-term sequelae of different treatments.

Abstract

Numerous factors seem to affect zinc absorption. Gastric acid secretion has been demonstrated to facilitate iron absorption. The zinc tolerance test (ZTT with ZnSO4 220 mg p.o.) was performed in 11 healthy volunteers to study the effects of administering the acid secretion inhibitor cimetidine (1 g/day p.o. for 3 days) and to evaluate the influence of HCl gastric secretion on zinc absorption in physiological conditions. Zinc absorption was reduced after cimetidine administration (p less than 0.005), suggesting that gastric pH influences zinc absorption. To rule out any direct effect of the drug on zinc absorption in five other healthy adults we further evaluated zinc absorption by using a different H2 antagonist (ranitidine 300 mg/day for 3 days and 300 mg before the test). Cimetidine was also tested in these subjects at half the dosage administered to the first group of subjects. Gastric acidity was monitored at 60-min intervals throughout the test via a nasogastric tube. The areas under the plasma concentration curves for zinc were significantly reduced after ranitidine (p less than 0.01), but not after cimetidine administration. Gastric acid was also reduced after ranitidine, but not after cimetidine (500 mg) administration, suggesting that gastric acid secretion plays a role in the regulation of zinc absorption in man.

We review a series of 1,280 operated cases of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), with an unexpected high frequency of transverse muscular fibers within the carpal canal (11%), particularly in a group of young male patients under 30 years of age. This abnormal presence of muscle fibers could explain the early development of CTS in young male workers.

Abstract

The increase in intensive treatment for cancer has impacted blood product transfusion practices. Transfusion guidelines are primarily institution specific, but the general concepts and theories are universal. Blood product screening has decreased the risk of transfusion-acquired infections; however, the risk is not obsolete. This article reviews current approaches to platelet, white blood cell, and red blood cell transfusions, as well as risks associated with these therapies (e.g., infection and transfusion-associated graft-versus-host dis ease). Pertinent laboratory studies, patient assessment, blood product adminis tration, and patient education is discussed. The current approaches to platelet, white blood cell, and red blood cell transfusions are constantly changed and evaluated. Pediatric oncology nurses must stay up to date with these changes to provide optimal patient care.

Abstract

Metal foams are a class of cellular structured materials with open cells randomly oriented and mostly homogeneous in size and shape. In the last decade, several authors have discussed the interesting heat transfer capabilities of these materials as enhanced surfaces for air conditioning, refrigeration, and electronic cooling applications. This paper reports an assessment on the forced convection through metal foams presenting experimental and analytical results carried out during air heat transfer through twelve aluminum foam samples and nine copper foam samples. The metal foam samples present different numbers of pores per linear inch (PPI), which vary between 5 and 40 with a porosity ranging between 0.896–0.956; samples of different heights have been studied. From the experimental measurements two correlations for the heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop calculations have been developed. These models can be successfully used to optimize different foam heat exchangers for any given application.

Abstract

We studied zinc absorption by means of the zinc tolerance test in healthy volunteers and in patients with liver cirrhosis, inflammatory bowel diseases and chronic pancreatitis. In normal subjects age, sex and gastric secretion have a significant effect on absorption. Zinc absorption is significantly reduced in all gastrointestinal and liver disorders examined. The administration of ligands, such as picolinic acid, citric acid and prostaglandin inhibitors, did not modify zinc absorption in healthy subjects and in patients with cirrhosis and inflammatory bowel diseases. On the contrary, citric acid significantly enhanced absorption in chronic pancreatitis.

Abstract

Biokinematic variables of the locomotion of the Criollo Argentino breed of horses, of which there is no specific information. These variables may be used with clinical and physiotherapeutic objectives and in reproduction programmes. 8 Criollo Argentino mares were used in the study. Refractive markers were placed in anatomical sites previously determined. They were made to trot covering a distance of 15 meters on grass guided by hand. Each individual repeated the activity three times, which were recorded on video. The photograms were introduced in the software ImageJ to measure the joint angles of scapular and pelvic inclination, protraction, retraction, extension, flexion and angular amplitude of each joint in the limbs. Simultaneously, the length and number of strides for all limbs and the speed at which they covered 15 meters. The statistical description of variables was carried out. The horses covered the distance in 22.99 sec. at 4.08 m/sec. doing 5.69 strides of a length of 2.66 m. per 0.65 sec. The protraction and retraction angles were 22.63° and 6.8°; 9.06° and 22.03° for the thoracic and pelvic limbs. The scapular and pelvic inclination angles were 73.19°-60.79° (12.4°); and 33.11°-26.52° (6,58°). The extension and flexion angles and angular amplitude were: shoulder 12807°-116.93°, 11.13°, elbow 159.85°-144.60°, 15.52°; carpus 175.85°-172.18°, 3.66°, hip 103.38°-86.19°, 17.18°; patella 138.57°-118.56°, 20.01°; tarsus 153.79°-142.85°, 10.94° and thoracic limb fetlock 159.68°-126.89°, 32.79° and pelvic limb fetlock 161.09°-129.68°, 31.41°. The range of retraction-protraction of the limbs contributes to the knowledge of synchronicity of the ipsilateral retraction of the forelimb and the protraction of the hindlimb during trotting. Abstract

The decrease of bonus due to quantity and quality of milk remitted to the dairy industry affect significantly the income of an important number of dairy farmers. The objective of the project was to assess the economic losses of the final price of milk as a consequence of a reduced bonus because of compositional, hygiene and sanitary quality as well volume of milk, remitted to the dairy industry, in La Pampa province. Records of volume, quality, hygiene and sanitary quality of 59 dairy farmers of La Pampa were analysed. The basic value of protein without of bonus was obtained through the mean monthly kilogram of protein magnified by the market value of protein. To this value, it was added bonus for colony formed units (CFU), somatic cell counts (SCC), temperature and cryoscopy, and it was compared with the maximum value to obtain in order to determine the losses. The losses in bonus occurred for high SCC and CFU, representing 67 and 33% respectively. Temperature and cryoscopy were not responsible for losses, and temporally the worst months were January, February, June, November and December. The dairy farmers mean monthly losses was 158.252$ equivalent to 2,05% of the income. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A useful parametrization of the energy spectrum of galactic cosmic rays (GCR) near Earth is offered by the so-called force-field model which describes the shape of the entire spectrum with a single parameter, the modulation potential. While the usefulness of the force-field approximation has been confirmed for regular periods of solar modulation, it was not tested explicitly for disturbed periods, when \GCR\ are locally modulated by strong interplanetary transients. Here we use direct measurements of protons and α -particles performed by the \PAMELA\ space-borne instrument during December 2006, including a major Forbush decrease, in order to directly test the validity of the force-field parameterization. We conclude that (1) The force-field parametrization works very well in describing the energy spectra of protons and α -particles directly measured by \PAMELA\ outside the Earths atmosphere; (2) The energy spectrum of \GCR\ can be well parameterized by the force-field model also during a strong Forbush decrease; (3) The estimate of the \GCR\ modulation parameter, obtained using data from the world-wide neutron monitor network, is in good agreement with the spectra directly measured by \PAMELA\ during the studied interval. This result is obtained on the basis of a single event analysis, more events need to be analyzed.

Abstract

The results of measuring albedo deuteron fluxes in the vicinity of the Earth are presented. The data were obtained in the PAMELA experiment conducted aboard the Resurs DK-1 artificial Earth satellite. High-precision detectors of the instrument setup allow us to identify albedo deuterons and measure their spectra in the energy interval from 70 to 600 MeV/nucleon at altitudes of 350-600 km for different geomagnetic latitudes.

Abstract

The satellite-borne PAMELA experiment studies cosmic ray spectra over a wide range of energies. The instrument was placed in orbit in June 2006 and remains there to the present day. A position-sensitive calorimeter is one of the main parts of the PAMELA instrument. The calorimeter data are used to determine the energy of particles that interact within it, separate the electron component of the detected radiation from the nuclear component, and reconstruct the tracks of particles passing through the instrument. The special calorimeter and S4 scintillation shower detector triggers enables us to expand our statistics considerably. Using the calorimeter data in generating these triggers means we can study the anisotropy of cosmic rays with energies in excess of tens of GeV. This method of anisotropy detection is based on reconstructing the direction of a particle's arrival from the axis of the secondary particle cascade in the calorimeter. ?????? 2013 Allerton Press, Inc.

Abstract

At present the existing data on the cosmic ray electron energy spectra in the high energy range are fragmented, and the situation is exacerbated by their small number. In the satellite PAMELA experiment measurements at high energies are carried out by the calorimeter. The experimental data accumulated for more than 8 years of measurements, with the information of the calorimeter, the neutron detector and the scintillation counters made it possible to obtain the total spectrum of high-energy electrons and positrons in energy range 0.3-3 TeV.
