Nitrogen use efficiency is still one of the most important topics in plant production. The crop yield and quality is closely related to nitrogen supply. As several factors contribute to this parameter, the assessment of N supply and calculation of fertiliser norms are of essential importance. The paper discusses the assessment parameters used for characterizing the efficiency of N use. Results of a field experiment with increasing nitrogen rates for winter (2015 and 2017) and spring (2016) wheat carried out in 2015-2017 were used. The yield of grain increased with the increase in fertiliser rate, whereas grain yield increase per 1 kg of N applied decreased, particularly when nitrogen application reached 120-180 kg ha-1 N. Nitrogen recovery from the fertilisers used was unstable and reached 35-75%, mainly due to the impact of weather conditions during the experimental period. A negative correlation was found between the physiological efficiency of N fertiliser use and protein content in grain. Therefore, certain compromise among the high N recovery rate, effective yield increments, and grain quality should be made. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nitrogen is determinative plant nutrient for high yield formation and almost in all situations soil resources alone are not able to provide sufficient nitrogen supply for crops. Manure and fertiliser use together with nitrogen released from crop residues and soil humus provide nitrogen pool available for current crop. The literature review was aimed to analyse the amount of mineral nitrogen (N-NO3 and N-NH4) left in the soil after harvesting of crops. Due to the high mobility of mineral nitrogen, especially nitrates, our goal is to minimize these amounts, if the soil is left bare until the next spring. Several factors, which can influence the surplus Nmin. accumulation in soil after harvest was analysed: the use of manure and mineral fertilisers, unbalanced fertilisation, water deficit during vegetation, soil tillage methods and time. In intensive farming only part of nitrogen applied as fertilisers is utilised for yield formation. Nitrogen surplus in soil after crop harvesting may cause environmental problems, therefore optimization of N fertiliser use is of high importance. Fertiliser application rate and timing are the main factors influencing the amount of nitrogen surplus in soil. The field experiment with winter and spring wheat was performed in 2015-2015 growing season with five rates of fertiliser applications - from 0 to 240 kg ha-1 N. The grain yield was strongly determined by N application rate. For winter wheat from 3.17 t ha-1, without N fertilisation up to 7.83 t ha-1 in the plot where 240 kg ha-1 N was applied for winter wheat. For spring wheat 2.77 t ha-1 and 6.07 t ha-1 respectively. The increase of fertiliser rate also increased the amount of soil mineral nitrogen (N-NO3 + N-NH4), especially directly after fertiliser use. The main amount of Nmin. was located in the soil layer 0-30 cm depth, but when high fertiliser rates were applied, also in 30-60 cm depth. The ratio between N-NO3 and N-NH4 in soil was different regarding fertiliser rate. Both forms were almost equal in the treatment without N fertilisation, but with increasing fertiliser nitrogen increase of nitrates in soil was observed. The lowest amount of N-NO3 in soil was during growing season, but its content was growing after harvesting of crops - in all treatments, also without N fertilisation. Soil Nmin. resources in spring in the plot without N application in 0-30 cm and 0-60 cm depth were not able to form positive N balance, because N take-up was higher compared with N resources, whereas application of 120 and 240 kg ha-1 N made surplus nitrogen accumulation after crop harvest. Mineral (N-NO3+N-NH4) nitrogen content in soil was monitored during crop vegetation of 2015 and 2016. Research polygons were located in six geographical places of Latvia and consisted of 24 trial plots covering the diversity of soil conditions, crops and nitrogen fertiliser applications. The aim of the study was to investigate the distribution of mineral nitrogen (Nmin.) content within the soil profile (0-30; 30-60 and 60-90 cm depth) monthly, starting from early spring up to late autumn. The crops grown included winter and spring wheat, winter rape, spring barley, potatoes, faba bean, maize and vetch-oat mixture for green forage. Different pattern of nitrogen applications was realized starting from 0 up to 240 kg ha-1 N. The content of mineral nitrogen in soil was variable depending on weather conditions, crop grown, soil and fertiliser applications. During vegetation period at the time of soil tillage and fertiliser application increase of Nmin. content in soil was observed, especially in the topsoil layer. During summer time Nmin. content decreased gradually due to its consumption by crops. The main amount of Nmin. was placed in the layer at 0 - 30 cm depth in the form of nitrates. Nitrogen management is of particular importance for crop cultivation. Agronomic, economic and environmental considerations are determinant factors for selection of the fertilising strategy. Field experiments were started in 2015 by combining nitrogen fertilisers with mineral nitrogen monitoring in the soil at the depth of 0-30 cm, 30-60 cm and 60-90 cm. Measurements were started on April 24, before spring barley had been sown, and finished on November 10, after the next crop - winter wheat had been sown. Two different types of soil were selected: Muckyhumus gley soil and Sod-gley soil with organic matter content at the topsoil of 450 and 27 g kg-1, respectively. Organic soil showed significantly higher mineral nitrogen accumulation in the depth of 0-90 cm starting from the middle of May up to the end of measurements. Mucky-humus gley soil had higher soil mineral nitrogen supply power compared with Sod-gley soil; therefore the same nitrogen application rate caused barley lodging, lower grain yields and the decrease of some quality parameters. Phosphorous turnover in agricultural soils has high agronomic and environmental importance. Therefore relevant studies were performed during 2009--2012. Field experiments with winter wheat varieties 'Bussard' un 'Zentos' were carried out in two places in Latvia. In each trial treatments were compared starting from unfertilized, fertilized with PK, as well as PK with increasing nitrogen input: 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, 180 and 210 kg ha-1 N (ammonium nitrate). In experimental farm "Peterlauki" experiments were carried out on Endoprotocalcic Chromic Stagnic Luvisol (Clayic, Cutanic, Hypereutric), silty clay loam/clay; organic matter (OM) 20--31 g kg-1, pH KCl 6.6--7.0 and medium phosphorous and potassium content easily utilized by plants. In Stende experiments were carried out on Eutric Stagnic Retisol (Cutanic, Drainic, Loamic), sandy clay loam; OM 21--23 g kg-1, pH KCl 5.8--6.7 and high to very high phosphorous and medium potassium content. PK application rates for all plots (except no fertilisation) included 30 kg ha-1 P2O5 and 90 kg ha-1 K2O. Phosphorous utilisation from soil resources and fertilisers applied were studied and are discussed in this paper. Higher soil phosphorous uptake by winter wheat as well as its relatively high apparent recovery was obtained in Peterlauki. Application of PK fertilizers without nitrogen showed small effect on phosphorous uptake by wheat. A significant increase of phosphorus uptake in Stende was observed by increasing nitrogen rates up to 120 kg ha-1 N. As regards "Peterlauki", only applications of 30 and 60 kg ha-1 N showed a significant increase of phosphorous uptake. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The cultivation of leguminous plants significantly affects the status and turnover of nitrogen in soil increasing biochemically active nitrogen pool, changing biological regimes in soil, influencing organic matter mineralisation-humification processes etc. Consequently, not only productivity of crops and nitrogen supply are affected in these areas, but also possible environmental risks are likely to emerge. Many factors are responsible for intensity and possible consequences of these processes and eventual results: species of legumes, cultivation methods, abiotic factors, crop rotation, soil tillage methods etc. In practical farming it is necessary to evaluate the factors and to take them into consideration in the process of decision making, as well as in choosing crop cultivation methods to satisfy the requirements of Good Agricultural Practice and Integrated soil fertility management model. Land-use change in Latvia (from agricultural land to forest and other non-agricultural uses) has became topical in the last decades. This process is raising awareness of the sustainable use of soil and other natural resources therefore it should be properly managed on the basis of a clear strategy. Decisions and actions should be based on the local conditions and soil properties. The objective of the current paper is to discuss the research findings of the detailed investigation of soil properties carried out in the time period of 2010 - 2012 in the experimental plantation. The experimental plantation consisted of pine, spruce and birch trees planted in 1995 - 1996. Due to the fact that soil had been formed on chemically rich two-membered (more sandy on the top and more heavy in subsoil) glaciolacustrine deposits, having large proportion of silt particles, significant changes in soil properties were not found by comparing the afforestated area with the adjacent field where agricultural activities were still going on. At the same time a significant variation of soil properties (soil texture, reaction, plant available phosphorous and potassium content) was found in a relatively small area (3.7 ha) of the experimental site. Land use changes are one of the factors leading to the disturbance of existing equilibrium in the ecosystem, and as a result several undesirable processes might negatively influence the soil functions. Despite many investigations where different aspects of soil quality in relation to land use change are studied there is not unequivocal conception and explanation which could be applicable for all situations. Differences in soil formation, diversity of abiotic and biotic conditions, and management practice stimulate or hinder changes which are going on in soil after radical alteration of land use pattern. In many countries, including Latvia, great emphasis is put on energetic crops. Availability of productive land not used for agriculture, climate, and water resources are advantages for development of this sector. But necessity for intensive use of fertilisers, other chemicals, heavy field machinery, and radical changes in organic matter accumulation and turnover of plant nutrients are risks which should be foreseen and studied. The goal is to accumulate the advanced information for decision support as well as to develop an effective soil monitoring framework to control the situation. The present article gives a literature review and analysis of information accumulated in research publications to point out aspects which could be relevant for Latvia situation. Raksturojot kultūraugu apgādi ar slāpekli, prognozējot mēslošanas līdzekļu vajadzību, vērtējot lauksaimniecības ietekmi uz vidi, tiek lietots rādītājs - augsnes minerālais slāpeklis (Nmin.). Tradicionāli ar to saprot nitrātjona (NO3-), nitrītjona (NO2-) amonija jona (NH4+) vai amonjaka (NH3) koncentrāciju augsnes šķīdumā, augsnes gāzveida fāzē vai arī šo savienojumu adsorbciju uz augsnes cietdaļiņu virsmas. Vienkāršības labad pirmos divus savienojumus mēdz apzīmēt ar kopīgu nosaukumu - nitrātu slāpeklis (N-NO3), savukārt otros divus ar nosaukumu - amonija slāpeklis (N-NH4). Augu spēja uzņemt šīs divas minerālā slāpekļa formas ir nedaudz atšķirīga, tāpat to dinamika augsnē arī ir dažāda. Nitrātu slāpeklis augam ir vieglāk uzņemams, sevišķi mazāk labvēlīgos augšanas apstākļos (piemēram, agri pavasarī), taču tas vājāk saistīts augsnē, lielāka ir šīs formas izskalošanās iespējamība. Savukārt amonija slāpekļa spēja adsorbēties uz augsnes cietdaļiņu virsmas ir daudz lielāka, sevišķi tādās augsnēs, kādās bija ierīkoti aprakstītie pētījumi. Tāpēc pētījumu mērķis bija noskaidrot minerālā slāpekļa struktūru (nitrātu un amonija slāpekļa īpatsvaru) augsnē, atkarībā no pētījumu atrašanās vietas (Poķi, Pēterlauki, Jaunbērze, Vecauce un Saldus), paraugu ņemšanas laika un augsnes slāņa dziļuma. Papildus tam tika skaidrots, vai pastāv kopsakarība starp augsnes kopējo slāpekli (noteikts atbilstoši Kjeldāla metodei), un minerālā slāpekļa krājumiem augsnē augu veģetācijas periodā. Minerālā slāpekļa īpatsvara raksturošanai tika lietota attiecība - nitrātu slāpeklis dalīts ar amonija slāpekli. Minerālā slāpekļa atsevišķo komponentu daudzums, kas izmantots iepriekšminētās attiecības izskaitļošanai, ir to masa noteiktā augsnes slānī izteikta kā kg uz ha. Tādējādi, ja iegūtā vērtība ir lielāka par viens, augsnē dominē nitrātu slāpeklis, ja zemāka - dominē amonija slāpeklis. Apkopojot visās pētījumu vietās iegūtos rezultātus 2015.-2017. gadu periodā tika novērots, ka veģetācijas sākuma posmā (marts - maijs) augsnē izteikti dominēja nitrātu slāpeklis, sevišķi tās dziļākajos slāņos. Tā, piemēram, 60-90 cm augsnes slānī attiecība N-NO3 : N-NH4 sasniedza 15-20 pat trīskārši pārsniedzot šo attiecību augsnes seklākajos slāņos. Šī attiecība viszemākā tika novērota jūnijā 3-6, tad pakāpeniski paaugstinājās oktobrī sasniedzot 7-12, bet novembrī nedaudz samazinoties. Augsnes virskārtā (0-30 cm) visos gadījumos tā bija zemāka, nekā augsnes zemaramkārtā (30-60 cm) un apakškārtā (60-90 cm). Nitrātu un amonija slāpekļa krājumu attiecības dinamika raksturo augsnē notiekošos amonifikācijas un nitrifikācijas procesus, slāpekļa patēriņu kultūraugiem, kā arī slāpekļa savienojumu dinamiku. Šajā gadījumā skaidri redzama tendence nitrātu slāpeklim pārvietoties uz augsnes dziļākajiem slāņiem, bet amonija slāpeklis - vairāk saglabāties aramkārtā. Analizējot minerālā slāpekļa kopsaisti ar kopējā slāpekļa daudzumu augsnē, var vērot zināmas sakarības, ja tās skata visas veģetācijas griezumā. Korelācijas koeficients šādai mijiedarbībai ir robežās no 0.55 līdz 0.75. Atsevišķu mēnešu griezumā konkrētas likumsakarības praktiski nav vērojamas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Zemkopībā joprojām aktuāls ir jautājums par slāpekļa, ko lieto ar mēslošanas līdzekļiem, izmantošanās efektivitāti. To nosaka gan agronomiskie faktori - nepieciešamība iegūt augstu un kvalitatīvu kultūraugu ražu, gan arī ekonomiskie un vides aspekti. Tāpēc Valsts pētījumu programmas Nr. 2014.10-4/VPP-7/5 projekta „Augsnes ilgtspējīga izmantošana un mēslošanas risku mazināšana (AUGSNE)” ietvaros 2015. - 2017. gadā tika iekārtoti lauka izmēģinājumi Saldus stacionārā. Kultūraugu secība bija šāda: ziemas kvieši 'Skagen' (sēti 2014. gada rudenī), vasaras kvieši 'Granny' un ziemas kvieši 'Fredis'. Izmēģinājumā tika iekārtoti 5 varianti, katram lietojot atšķirīgu slāpekļa minerālmēslu (amonija nitrāts) normu: 0; 60; 120; 180 un 240 kg ha-1 N. Dominējošā augsne izmēģinājumu laukā - virsēji velēnglejotā augsne (GLu), smilšmāls. Veģetācijas laikā trīs izmēģinājumu variantos - N0, N120 un N240 tika veikts augsnes minerālā slāpekļa monitorings, paraugus ņemot ik mēnesi trīs dziļumos: 0-30, 30-60 un 60-90 cm. Šajā publikācijā galvenā vērība tiek veltīta lietotā slāpekļa mēslojuma agronomiskai efektivitātei, t.i. tā izmantošanās pakāpei, ietekmei uz ražas lielumu un ražas kvalitātes rādītājiem. Slāpekļa bilances aprēķinos izneses daļu veidoja ražā (pamatprodukcija + blakusprodukcija) akumulētais slāpekļa daudzums, bet ienesi 1) papildmēslojumā lietotā N norma, 2) kopējie N resursi, kas sastāv no minerālā slāpekļa augsnē pavasarī + N mēslojuma norma. Minerālā slāpekļa krājumi izmēģinājuma augsnē bija atkarīgi no lietotā slāpekļa mēslojuma daudzuma. Vidēji 3 gados augsnes paraugošanas periodā nemēslotajā augsnē 0-90 cm slānī vidēji bija 31.8 kg ha-1, lietojot normu N120 - 45.5 kg ha-1, bet lietojot normu N240 - 68.7 kg ha-1 minerālā slāpekļa. Krājumi būtiski palielinājās pēc mēslojuma lietošanas, taču augiem slāpekli patērējot, tā daudzums augsnē samazinājās, sasniedzot zemāko līmeni jūnijā un jūlijā. Arī nemēslotajā variantā minerālā slāpekļa daudzums augsnē aprīlī un maijā palielinājās, bet jūnijā un jūlijā saruka līdz līmenim, kāds tika noteikts agri pavasarī. Pēc ražas novākšanas rudenī visos variantos minerālā slāpekļa krājumi augsnē atkal septembrī īslaicīgi palielinājās, bet vēlāk rudenī pakāpeniski saruka līdz saturam, kāds bija novērots agri pavasarī. Nemēslotajā variantā minerālā slāpekļa krājumi augsnē divos gados no trim bija pārāk mazi, lai kompensētu iznesi ar ražu, slāpekļa bilance bija negatīva. Ņemot vērā to, ka slāpekļa iznese ar ražu bija par 10-15 kg ha-1 lielāka nekā minerālā slāpekļa krājumi augsnē pavasarī, šo slāpekļa daļu acīmredzot veidoja organisko vielu mineralizācijas procesā izveidojušies augiem izmantojami minerālā slāpekļa savienojumi. Slāpekļa izmantošanās no minerālmēsliem izmēģinājuma gados bija vidēji 57% lietojot N120 un 49%, lietojot N240. Aprēķini rāda, ka, neņemot vērā augsnes minerālā slāpekļa nodrošinājumu, slāpekļa mēslojuma normas līdz 120 kg ha-1 N nespēj nosegt tā iznesi ar ražu. Taču bilances aprēķinos ienesas daļā, iekļaujot augsnes minerālā slāpekļa krājumus, rezultāts ir krasi atšķirīgs: papildmēslojumā lietojot 20 kg ha-1 N augsnē veģetācijas perioda beigās veidojas 50-100 kg ha-1, bet variantā kur mēslošanai izmantoti 240 kg ha-1 N - 100 līdz 250 kg ha-1 liels ražas veidošanai neizmantotā slāpekļa pārpalikums. Lauksaimniecības fakultātes izmēģinājumu laukā - Poķu stacionārā 2010. un 2017. gadā notika padziļināta augsnes izpēte. No katra lauciņa (kopumā 24) tika noņemti augsnes paraugi trīs dziļumos: 0-20 cm, 20-40 cm un 40-60 cm. Augsnes paraugos tika noteikti galvenie agroķīmiskie rādītāji, ieskaitot sekundāro elementu (Ca, Mg un S) un mikroelementu (Mn, Cu, Zn, B) saturu. Abos gados augsnes paraugošanas un nosakāmo rādītāju analīžu metodes bija līdzīgas. Tā kā septiņu gadu periodā dažādos lauciņos tika pielietota atšķirīga augsnes apstrādes sistēma - tradicionālā aršana 20-23 cm dziļumā un minimālā apstrāde - lobīšana 8-10 cm dziļumā, kā arī atšķirīga kultūraugu secība, pētījumu mērķis bija skaidrot šo agrotehnisko pasākumu ietekmi uz agroķīmisko īpašību dinamiku. Augsnes sega izmēģinājumu laukā nav viendabīga. Daļā lauka (1.-12. lauciņš) Virsēji velēnglejotā augsne (Latvijas klasifikācija) un Cambic Calcisol (Aric, Hypocalcic, Bathyraptic, Episiltic, Protostagnic) (WRB 2015). Agsnes granulometriskais sastāvs virskārtā - viegls putekļu māls, apakškārtā - smags putekļu māls. Savukārt 13.-24. lauciņu daļā Virsēji velēnglejotā augsne (Latvijas klasifikācija) un Cambic Calcisol (Aric, Bathyluvic, Ochric, Anosiltic, Protostagnic) (WRB 2015). Augsnes granulometriskais sastāvs virskārtā - putekļains, apakškārtā - putekļains smilšmāls. Šādas augsnes raksturojas ar ievērojamu buferspēju, tāpēc hipotētiski augsnes agroķīmisko rādītāju izmaiņaām nevajadzētu būt ievērojamām. Agroķīmisko rādītāju izmaiņas tiek skatītas gan saistībā ar augsnes apstrādes metodēm, gan arī ar kultūraugu maiņu, aprēķinot gan standartnovirzi, variācijas koeficientu un izmaiņu varbūtību. Būtiski (P<0.05) ir pieaudzis organisko vielu saturs, kopējā slāpekļa un sulfātu sēra saturs, kā arī mikroelementu vara un bora saturs augsnē abos augsnes apstrādes variantos (tradicionālajā un minimālajā). Augsnē samazinājies magnija daudzums (abos variantos), kā arī bora saturs, lietojot tradicionālo augsnes apstrādi. Pārējo agroķīmisko rādītāju svārstības bija nebūtiskas. Veikto augsnes analīžu rezultāti 2017. gadā uzrādīja atšķirīgu cinka un bora saturu augsnes apstrādes fonos. Šo mikroelementu saturs būtiski lielāks bija minimālās apstrādes gadījumā: cinkam - par 15.0%, bet boram - par 11.3% salīdzinājumā ar tradicionālo augsnes apstrādes fonu. Augu maiņa ietekmēja fosfora, sēra, vara un cinka saturu augsnē. Būtiski augstāks augiem izmantojamā fosfora un sēra saturs konstatēts augu maiņas variantos, kuros bija iekļauti vasaras mieži, pie kam šī sakarība vairāk izteikta augsnes minimālās apstrādes fonā. Salīdzinot augu maiņas variantus, nozīmīgs mikroelementu vara un cinka uzkrājums augsnē konstatēts izmēģinājuma lauciņos, kur līdz ar ziemas kviešiem un rapsi tika iekļautas arī lauka pupas.
