Abstract

This essay addresses the relationship between communication, public opinion, and democracy, which is evident in Athenian democracy. It briefly considers the complexity of the concept of public opinion, and how it was understood as a political phenomenon accepted in general thinking and political action, as a consequence of the democratic dynamism originated by the printing press. After briefly considering some of the most relevant ideas about this relationship throughout the 19th century, this essay discusses the main attitudes that emerged in the face of public opinion after the First World War, from which the most relevant theories about the effects of media on opinion, behaviours, and action begun to be developed. The study takes into account the development of an empirical science of public opinion, linked to scientific opinion surveys. It summarises how the investigation of the effects of the media goes through a stage in which they are considered irrelevant, until some studies - especially the theories of agenda setting and the spiral of silence- recovered the idea of the powerful effects of the media. Finally, the essay addresses the new challenges posed by the disenchantment with democracy, the loss of credibility of the media, and the way of understanding communication, at a time in which digital technology has facilitated the creation of social media, causing a situation described as the post-truth era, in which the global need for information becomes more evident. The new challenges affect the political science, research on public opinion, and the science of communication, which requires a foundation of greater consistency than the current one. Abstract

Politicians are steadily becoming less prestigious in many countries, and Spanish citizens consider them now as the third most important problem. The media influence on this development has raised an interesting debate. Some authors attribute the main responsibility of this loss of prestige to the media, whereas others deny the negative direct influence of them. This article, based on a survey conducted by the authors in Navarra (Spain), examines the relationship among the public perception of politicians, political parties and politics and the media use level. The data analysis allows to conclude that a higher use of the media is associated with less negatives and more moderate perceptions about politicians, parties and politics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This article presents information on a study which investigated how young Asians and Europeans perceive the strength of the U.S. media effects on culture. While such an analysis of audience perceptions does not allow the testing of the possible foreign media effects on indigenous cultures, authors believe that even the perceived impact of foreign media can be important. Governments whose citizens ask for more and better access to foreign media, for example, might be hard pressed to restrict such access if people feel positive about the influence of foreign media on themselves and their culture. Governments, on the other hand, who believe that exposure to foreign media has negative cultural or social consequences might be inclined to limit the amount of foreign media products in their countries. Thus, the cultural and social effects of foreign media assuming there are any might be less important than what governments and audiences believe about the strength and characteristics of these effects.

Abstract

The article presents an analysis of the agenda-setting, which relates to the influence of the mass media in public opinion. Particular focus is given to the municipality elections of Pamplona, Spain, and the contributions of the press and the television, in promoting consensus among the community. Several aspects of the society are studied in order to determine the the influence of the media in the unity of opinion among the society. In addition, analysis on the characteristics of the candidates is made, which reflects the importance that the media gives to each of them.

The article presents an analysis of the agenda-setting theory, which develops a study on the effects of the mass media in public opinion and the audiences. The media serves as a bridge between the image of our minds and the external world. In addition, the radio, the press and the television, cause a different effect in people, with different levels of efficiency, according to their interests.
